0:01:26 > 0:01:32- You were told to bring along wellies, a waterproof and A NET.- Oh.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Yeah. Today on the show we've got a couple of lads

0:01:38 > 0:01:42who are going to be helping out with a leading research programme

0:01:42 > 0:01:46that tracks the movement of some pretty special wild seabirds.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47This is why I'm here,

0:01:47 > 0:01:51at a harbour in North Berwick dressed like a banana.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54I don't know why I'm wearing this, though,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25'Fraser once saved a trapped hedgehog,

0:02:25 > 0:02:28'but he's wary about hairy monkeys.'

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I was eating my ice cream

0:02:31 > 0:02:35and then a monkey came up behind me

0:02:35 > 0:02:37and swooped down and stole my ice cream.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42'A head-spinning "shiver me timbers" adventure awaits these two.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45'Onwards to the east coast of Scotland.'

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Rory, Fraser, hi. Welcome to the show.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50So, you're a monkey hater and you hate swooping, flappy birds, right?

0:02:50 > 0:02:52- Yep.- OK.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Now, which of those two different creatures

0:02:54 > 0:02:58do you think we're focusing on today? Monkeys or seabirds?

0:03:00 > 0:03:03- Erm.- Come on, it's not a difficult question. We're on the coastline!

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- Seabirds.- There's not exactly going to be

0:03:06 > 0:03:09monkeys flapping about here, is there. Seabirds.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11What we're going to do is conquer those fears today,

0:03:11 > 0:03:14make you love flappy seabirds. And you're going to get a chance

0:03:14 > 0:03:17to do something only a handful of people have done.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19- Does that sound good?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22'This is Bass Rock, a real wildlife wonder of the world.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24'Just off the east coast of Scotland,

0:03:24 > 0:03:28'it's the perfect place for a sensational, seafaring, Go Wild day.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31'Now, these aren't white cliffs.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36'These are white gannets, an incredible 150,000 of them.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40'There are more here than any other rock on the planet.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42'Bass Rock has been owned and protected by the family

0:03:42 > 0:03:46'of Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple for over 300 years.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50'You need special permission to go anywhere near this place,

0:03:50 > 0:03:54'And we're hoping to get our boys VIP passes to join up with

0:03:54 > 0:03:56'the research team who actually work on Bass Rock.

0:03:56 > 0:04:01'First, an appointment with Scottish seabird centre guide, Maggie.'

0:04:01 > 0:04:04So, Maggie there's a big screen and a remote control.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06- What's all this about? - This is the Bass Rock.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10This is happening on the Bass Rock as we look at this screen just now.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14'Talk about a bird's eye view.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16'This top technology allows the team here

0:04:16 > 0:04:19'to complete important gannet research from a distance.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22'The cameras are so good they can spot a fly on a bird's beak.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27'What a way to help Rory get to grips with big, flappy seabirds.'

0:04:27 > 0:04:30So, Rory, this must be a dream come true.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34Look, you're really close to wildlife, live, right now,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36but you're not even getting pecked at.

0:04:36 > 0:04:37- Is this good?- Yeah, it's great.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Is it weird, Fraser, seeing the colossal amount

0:04:40 > 0:04:43of white birds on that rock?

0:04:43 > 0:04:44Yeah, it's amazing.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Boys, your job today

0:04:50 > 0:04:53is to give a name

0:04:53 > 0:04:56to every single one of these gannets on the rock.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Right?

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Start. Just hold that frame, there. That one?

0:05:01 > 0:05:03- Bob.- That one?- Joe.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06- That one?- Fraser. - That one?- Rory.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09'All right, lads, enough name calling.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11'Let's get ready for the adventure of a lifetime,

0:05:11 > 0:05:15'because you're going to be the first ever junior researchers

0:05:15 > 0:05:19'to join the experts on the brilliant Bass Rock.'

0:05:21 > 0:05:24'Later, the boys journey to a close-up encounter

0:05:24 > 0:05:27'with thousands of giant stinky seabirds.'

0:05:27 > 0:05:31It's huge, and it smells quite a lot.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34'But first, Dick is in the North East of England

0:05:34 > 0:05:36'and has two new vet assistants on his hands.'

0:05:36 > 0:05:37Here at Eden Hill vets,

0:05:37 > 0:05:41they look after a variety of pets with various problems.

0:05:41 > 0:05:42But it's not your average vets.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45No. They also look after wounded wildlife.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47Luckily, today they've got two extra members of staff.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Well, I say lucky. Let's have a look.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53'This is Chloe and best mate, Billijo.'

0:05:53 > 0:05:56BOTH: Woo!

0:05:56 > 0:05:59'Chloe likes most things animally,

0:05:59 > 0:06:02'and is desperate for her own pet dog.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05- 'How desperate, Chloe?' - Like, loads.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Good boy!

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Even if my mum says, "Do you want a flatscreen TV?"

0:06:11 > 0:06:14I say "No, I want a dog instead."

0:06:14 > 0:06:16I've already got a flatscreen TV, anyway.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23'Billijo loves her dog, Mercy. But really wants a big cat pet.'

0:06:23 > 0:06:26I'd really, really like a pet tiger.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28The white and black ones.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32I think they're really cute. And a dolphin and a horse.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36- What about a giraffe? - Yeah, I like that as well.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39- 'These two normally only have Mercy for company.'- Good girl!

0:06:39 > 0:06:42'But today we've fixed up something much more colourful.' BOTH: Yay!

0:06:42 > 0:06:45HE SNIFFS Ugh!

0:06:45 > 0:06:48- Ah, Billijo, Chloe! How are you? - Good, ta!- Welcome to Go Wild.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50- Thank you. - Billijo, you've got a dog.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53But you'd also like a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55- Yeah.- Why?

0:06:55 > 0:06:57I don't know. They're cute and fat.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00- Now, you've got the dog, but Chloe, you haven't got a dog.- Nah.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02- Do you ever look after her dog? - Sometimes.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04Do you ever have to take your dog to the vet?

0:07:04 > 0:07:07Oh yeah, we had to take her, one time.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10I think it was something wrong with her paw, but Chloe came with me.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Right. What about working in a vets, would that be a nice idea for you?

0:07:14 > 0:07:16- BOTH: Yeah.- You'd like that? - BOTH: Yeah!

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- That's what we're going to do today. - Ooh!- Thank you!

0:07:19 > 0:07:22That's a reaction! Right, you're going to need one of them,

0:07:22 > 0:07:24- you're going to need that.- Thank you.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27And we're going to do some veterinary things. This way!

0:07:27 > 0:07:31'Eden Hill is one of the busiest vets in the north east.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35'Vet Jason and his team sort out around a thousand pets every month.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37'Sounds busy and messy.'

0:07:38 > 0:07:41'A wardrobe change might be in order.'

0:07:43 > 0:07:44'Yep, that works.'

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Welcome to the vets. This way, girls.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50This is Billijo and Chloe, your new members of staff.

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Hi, girls. Great timing.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54We've got the first patient to give a quick check over to.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56- Do you want to come this way? - BOTH: Yeah.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01- Hi, Anna.- Look, girls.

0:08:01 > 0:08:02GIRLS: Awww!

0:08:02 > 0:08:04'This is Honey,

0:08:04 > 0:08:08'a cute, little, one-year-old Shih-Tzu dog with a headache.'

0:08:08 > 0:08:10She's got a little lump on the top of her head

0:08:10 > 0:08:14where unfortunately a tick bit her and her owners knocked it off.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18'Honey's owners tried to remove the blood-sucking bug,

0:08:18 > 0:08:20'but its teeth are still stuck in Honey's head,

0:08:20 > 0:08:24'and the tick that attacked the poor pooch has caused an infected wound.'

0:08:24 > 0:08:29- How do they get them?- Basically, they pick them up from other animals

0:08:29 > 0:08:34or from very wet land. The tick jumps on top and feeds.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37'Poor Honey needs two operations today.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39'One to remove the troublesome tick's teeth,

0:08:39 > 0:08:43'and another to stop her having' unwanted pups.'

0:08:43 > 0:08:45How can the girls help Honey, today?

0:08:45 > 0:08:49Well, first, before any animal has an anaesthetic,

0:08:49 > 0:08:51we always give it a check-up.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54One of the things I'd like you to do is listen to the dog's heart.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57'Out with the stethoscopes. We need to hear a healthy heartbeat.'

0:08:58 > 0:09:03- Do you hear that?- Yeah. - Your go.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05You put it on.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08You're trainee nurses, you don't need my help.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Can you hear it? Thump-thump?

0:09:12 > 0:09:16What we're listening for is that the heart's nice and regular

0:09:16 > 0:09:18and there's no noises in between the heart sounds.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22- No?- No, there's not.- So it's passed the check?- BOTH: Yeah.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25'And Jason agrees. Honey is cleared for the operation.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28'Now the team must remove that itchy, infected lump.'

0:09:30 > 0:09:35'And later, our girls get hands-on as Honey has her ops.'

0:09:35 > 0:09:38- That way?- Yeah, lovely.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43'Over on the East Coast of Scotland,

0:09:43 > 0:09:46'Fraser and Rory have set sail for Bass Rock.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50'There's important seabird research to complete,

0:09:50 > 0:09:54'and brave Rory is up for confronting his flappy bird fear.'

0:09:56 > 0:10:00Getting close to the birds is a great opportunity

0:10:00 > 0:10:04to get a bit more positive about swooping birds.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10'Expedition leader, Maggie, briefs the boys on all things gannet.'

0:10:10 > 0:10:14They're colonial birds, which means they like being together.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- They don't like to be on their own. - Will the birds be friendly?

0:10:17 > 0:10:21Well, gannets are not exactly friendly birds.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28What they are, are territorial birds.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32So, as long as we don't scare them. But that's not what we're there for.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34We're there to enjoy the birds and learn.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37There's one just flying across there, now.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41You see how big they are? They've got these lovely black wing tips.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44'Northern Gannets have a stunning wingspan of nearly two metres.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47'Talking of stunning, check this place out, boys.'

0:10:47 > 0:10:51It's amazing. I've never seen a rock,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55an island so big with so many birds on it.

0:10:55 > 0:11:00'Hey, we don't mess around, here. Ultimate VIP access, this.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04'Time to get close up to the famous Bass Rock gannet,

0:11:04 > 0:11:06'all 150,000 of them.'

0:11:08 > 0:11:11Welcome to the Bass Rock, boys.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17Here you are, the largest single rock colony for gannets in the world.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22- What do you think? You're standing here.- Um, well...

0:11:22 > 0:11:25It's huge and it smells quite a lot.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27It'll get worse as we head further up. Trust me.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30'So, hold your noses, boys. No time to waste.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32'There's a mountain of work to get through.'

0:11:34 > 0:11:36'Later, Fraser and Rory get to grips with the gannets

0:11:36 > 0:11:39'as the team race to complete their research work.'

0:11:39 > 0:11:42What do you think? I bet you never thought

0:11:42 > 0:11:45- you'd get this close to a gannet, did you?- Not at all.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49'Back at the North East vets,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52'Chloe and Billijo are ready to help with Honey's surgery.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55'The poor Shih-Tzu dog needs to have a painful infected lump

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- 'removed from her head.' - Here she is.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01'Before that, the team needs to prepare Honey for another op

0:12:01 > 0:12:03'to stop her having unwanted pups.'

0:12:04 > 0:12:07Who wants to do the clipping?

0:12:09 > 0:12:12'Yeah, top effort! Billijo is shaving Honey's tummy like an expert.'

0:12:12 > 0:12:14- That way?- Yeah, that's lovely.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Now girls, I'm going to make the first incision in a minute.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21There you go, ladies.

0:12:24 > 0:12:29'Our new vet assistants take their positions, and Jason begins the op.'

0:12:29 > 0:12:32How many of these operations run smoothly?

0:12:32 > 0:12:36I would say, probably, 99.9%.

0:12:36 > 0:12:42'Fingers crossed, she'll come through her two operations just fine.'

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- Is it very simple? - Does it look very simple?

0:12:45 > 0:12:48It kind of looks simple, because you make it look easy.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Good, yes. That is the right answer.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54'The first op's complete. Time for the girls to get hands-on, next.'

0:12:55 > 0:12:59'And later they come face to face with Jambo the bateleur eagle.'

0:12:59 > 0:13:03- How do you feel about getting that close to an eagle?- Speechless.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10'But first, Dick is floored by a cold-blooded challenge.'

0:13:12 > 0:13:15MUSIC: "Eye Of The Tiger" by Survivor

0:13:16 > 0:13:18DICK GRUNTS

0:13:22 > 0:13:23Training for the big race?

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Yep, I'm well oiled up. - You're certainly greasy.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Well, no pain no gain. Anyway, where's my opponent?

0:13:29 > 0:13:32- He's here.- No, he's not. - He is. Look, there.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37You've had me training for three months to race against a tortoise?!

0:13:37 > 0:13:41Do not underestimate Tiny Tony, OK? He's stronger than he looks.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53'A tortoise's shell is incredibly strong and it makes up

0:13:53 > 0:13:54'about a third of its body weight.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56'That's like a person carrying around

0:13:56 > 0:13:58'ten house bricks on their back for life.'

0:13:58 > 0:14:02Here you go. Bag of bricks. Come on.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06- Fair is fair. It'll even it out a bit. Get it on.- All right!

0:14:07 > 0:14:12On your marks, get set, hang on a minute,

0:14:12 > 0:14:15put this on your head. Good.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17On your marks, get set...

0:14:17 > 0:14:19PISTOL SOUND

0:14:19 > 0:14:22..go! Come on, Tony.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25'These tracks are carefully measured to scale,

0:14:25 > 0:14:29'eight metres for Dick, and one metre for Tiny Tony.'

0:14:31 > 0:14:34He's over the water bottle, and he's...

0:14:34 > 0:14:36No, that way.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38'This isn't about giving Dick the run around.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41'Tortoises need regular exercise and open space

0:14:41 > 0:14:43'if you're going to keep them as a pet.'

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Will he get over the big stick? He's going over the big stick.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49'And what Dick with his bricks doesn't realise is that tortoises

0:14:49 > 0:14:51'are surprisingly nimble when they want to be.'

0:14:51 > 0:14:54Get there! Yes!

0:14:55 > 0:14:57We've got a winner. Yeah!

0:14:57 > 0:15:01- You're joking!- Winner!- Can't believe I've been beaten by a tortoise.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Why not? Have you not read The Hare And The Tortoise?

0:15:04 > 0:15:07- Well, I've read the pictures. - Do you want your cabbage?

0:15:14 > 0:15:16'Animal fans, Chloe and Billijo,

0:15:16 > 0:15:18'are getting stuck in at a North East vets.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21'Honey is about to have a painful lump removed from her head.'

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Can you see the lump there, now?

0:15:23 > 0:15:28- Yeah.- Yeah.- Poor dog. Every time you touched this, the dog was yelping.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33'First, Chloe shaves the target area...'

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Thank you.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38'..so Billijo can clean around the lump to prevent further infection.'

0:15:38 > 0:15:42Wet all this hair all the way round to get it out the way.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45- Is it hard to get it out? - No, not particularly.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48I just want to make sure I get it all out,

0:15:48 > 0:15:51because I don't really want to have to operate on it again.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53Who wants that?

0:15:53 > 0:15:57- 'At last, Honey is tick free.' - Right, girls, that's all done.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01'A brilliant first-ever doggy dissection for the girls.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03'What do you think about a vet's life, Billijo?'

0:16:03 > 0:16:05I were OK watching it.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10But I don't think I'd be OK, like,

0:16:10 > 0:16:13under the pressure what they are as they're doing it.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16'And Chloe came through those early nerves

0:16:16 > 0:16:19'to become a right hands-on vet assistant.'

0:16:19 > 0:16:22I were a bit worried before the operation

0:16:22 > 0:16:25because I thought I were going to be really squeamish.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30But when I went in there and me and Billi had to shave its fur off,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33and stuff like that, I wasn't too bothered.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37'With Honey still under the effects of the anaesthetic,

0:16:37 > 0:16:40'the girls are called to a very different kind of job.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42'Check this fella out!'

0:16:42 > 0:16:46- Right, girls, this is patient number two.- Wow!

0:16:46 > 0:16:48Jambo. What do you think that is?

0:16:48 > 0:16:52- Is it a hawk?- Close.- Eagle.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54'That's right, Billijo.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57'Jambo is a bateleur eagle with an infected foot

0:16:57 > 0:16:59'that is concerning Jason.'

0:16:59 > 0:17:02How do you feel about getting that close to an eagle?

0:17:02 > 0:17:05- Scared but excited.- Yeah?

0:17:05 > 0:17:08- Speechless.- Speechless?

0:17:11 > 0:17:13'Bateleur means "tumbler" in French.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16'They get their name from their acrobatic aerial style.'

0:17:17 > 0:17:21'Our able vet assistants must help Jason take a swab sample

0:17:21 > 0:17:23'from Jambo's injury.'

0:17:23 > 0:17:27If you just hold that like that, that would be brilliant.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29'This could be easier said than done.'

0:17:31 > 0:17:33'Later Jambo gets flighty.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37'And fingers crossed as Honey comes round from her operation.'

0:17:37 > 0:17:40Aw, she's proper shaking!

0:17:43 > 0:17:45'One mile off Scotland's east coast, Fraser and Rory

0:17:45 > 0:17:47'are on an incredible adventure.'

0:17:47 > 0:17:50I've never seen a place like it before.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52'They've just arrived on Bass Rock,

0:17:52 > 0:17:55'home to the world's largest rock colony of northern gannets.'

0:17:55 > 0:17:58I'm a bit nervous, but it's really fun now.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59It's really nice to be here.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02'And there's smelly research to complete.'

0:18:02 > 0:18:04It smells a bit like dung.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08'Oh yes. There's about one million poos plopped every day here.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10'That's not going to put off

0:18:10 > 0:18:12'Dr Keith Hamer and our team, though.'

0:18:14 > 0:18:18Hi, guys. We're looking to see where the birds go when they're at sea.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21We know a lot about what the birds do when they are at land,

0:18:21 > 0:18:24but what's really important is where they go and how they get food

0:18:24 > 0:18:27when they're away from the nest, at sea.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30How far do the birds travel?

0:18:30 > 0:18:32The furthest we've recorded a bird going

0:18:32 > 0:18:34is right up to the coast of Norway

0:18:34 > 0:18:36and that's a round trip of over 1,000 kilometres.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40'And Keith knows all of this because he's been attaching

0:18:40 > 0:18:42'little tracking devices to some of the birds

0:18:42 > 0:18:44'so he can follow them wherever they go.'

0:18:44 > 0:18:47The bird goes about its normal life, goes away to sea, forages,

0:18:47 > 0:18:51gets food, comes back to the nest, and then we take the device off it,

0:18:51 > 0:18:53download the data, and we can see where it's been.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57- So, you OK to help with that? - Yeah.- OK, brilliant.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59'This is going to be a tough task.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01'Look at all those birds!

0:19:01 > 0:19:04'Remember there are around 150,000 gannets

0:19:04 > 0:19:07'and only about 20 are wearing the tracking devices.'

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Some birds have got a coloured ring on a leg.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13They're the birds that we've put these devices on.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20- Oh, there's one! Right there. - Whereabouts?

0:19:20 > 0:19:24- Just there. The one...- Oh, I see! Fantastic. Well spotted.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26We'll go to him.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29'Wow! That's a one in seven and a half thousand spot, Rory.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33'Time to work fast. These are big, feisty birds.'

0:19:33 > 0:19:36You need to sit with your knees together.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39'The team need to check its weight to make sure it's in good shape.'

0:19:39 > 0:19:42I'll keep my hand on its beak.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44That's the dangerous bit.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47You just need to make sure that he's comfortable.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52This is where you need those safety specs,

0:19:52 > 0:19:56cos I'm going to let go of its head. Its weight is 3270.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00'Just over three kilograms is about the same weight

0:20:00 > 0:20:04'as three bags of sugar. A healthy weight for a young adult.'

0:20:04 > 0:20:06OK, Rory. I'm going to put him on your lap.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09'A few hours ago, Rory couldn't stand flappy feathered things.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11'Now he's holding the UK's largest seabird.'

0:20:11 > 0:20:14What do you think? I bet you never thought

0:20:14 > 0:20:16- you'd get this close to a gannet. - No, not at all.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Think your classmates will be amazed...

0:20:18 > 0:20:21- Yeah.- ..when you say you've had a Gannet in your lap?

0:20:21 > 0:20:26'Job done. Extreme wildlife work of the highest order, this.'

0:20:26 > 0:20:28The gannet was really soft.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34Never seen so many birds in my life before.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36That was absolutely amazing.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39I could do this all over again.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44'And it gets even better later

0:20:44 > 0:20:48'when our boys see the greedy gannets in spectacular action.'

0:20:48 > 0:20:52- He just got a fish!- You see? He just swallowed the fish.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57'But first, I spy wild horses 'and I don't like it.'

0:20:59 > 0:21:02This is terrible. Mate, we've got to do something about this.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06There's horses just wandering around with no-one looking after them.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09Dom, just try and understand some very simple words.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12- What?- For the last time these are wild horses.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15They're a breed of horse called koniks, they are not domesticated.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18- Ah!- Konik's are very tough horses.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20They can survive in very horrible conditions.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23No horse shoes! Every horse I've ever seen has got horse shoes.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27They usually get fitted by one of those furry fellas.

0:21:27 > 0:21:28- Farriers.- That's it.

0:21:28 > 0:21:32How would you like to be running around a field in your own poo

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- with no shoes on?- Depends who's looking. But I haven't got hooves.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37The koniks have got very tough hooves.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41They can walk along difficult ground. Their hooves also trim themselves.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45- When they get too long, they fall off.- Sounds painful.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48It really is. Excruciatingly painful.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50Not a saddle between them.

0:21:55 > 0:22:00'Animal-loving Billijo and Chloe have been getting top-level

0:22:00 > 0:22:02'hands-on experience as vet assistants

0:22:02 > 0:22:05'They've helped perform two operations on Honey the dog,

0:22:05 > 0:22:09'and they're now attempting to help an eagle with an injured foot.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12'But the big bird is getting a little bit flighty.'

0:22:14 > 0:22:18'And yes, that is me, cowering behind Billijo and Chloe.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21'Incredible this, though.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25'Not every day you get an eagle-eyed view of such a majestic creature.'

0:22:25 > 0:22:28- Look at his feet! - See how they've gone red?

0:22:28 > 0:22:30'Well spotted, Billijo.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34'A bateleur eagle's feet turn red when they feel threatened.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36'Jambo's got no idea we're trying to help him,

0:22:36 > 0:22:39'but all of this is for his own good.'

0:22:39 > 0:22:42What we're doing here is just taking a swab from this pus.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45'Sounds revolting, but the sample will tell Jason

0:22:45 > 0:22:49'exactly what kind of treatment the injury needs.'

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Keep hold of that.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53'Job done. Gripping vet assisting, girls.'

0:22:54 > 0:22:57Dick hid behind me!

0:22:57 > 0:23:01We just all went into corner, cos the wings were a bit big.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03What's going to happen now?

0:23:03 > 0:23:05You're going to have some paperwork to fill in

0:23:05 > 0:23:08to send off to the lab. Or do you want me to deal with it?

0:23:08 > 0:23:11It's all part of the job, girls, come on. It's 24/7.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13- You can deal with it. - That's very good of you.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15There you are. You've been told.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17- So, did you enjoy that experience?- Yeah.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21'Finally, it's time for the girls to check on old friend, Honey.'

0:23:23 > 0:23:27Ah, there she is. Honey is wide awake once more.

0:23:27 > 0:23:28Well, still a little bit sleepy.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32All there is to do now, girls,

0:23:32 > 0:23:35is take Honey back to her rightful owner.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Aw, she's proper shaking!

0:23:37 > 0:23:41'That's because Honey is still a bit wobbly and drowsy

0:23:41 > 0:23:42'after her operations.'

0:23:43 > 0:23:45Thanks.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47- You look good together.- Yeah!

0:23:49 > 0:23:52'But thanks to the girls' hard work, Honey is ready to go home.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56'And owner Cameron and mum Lindsay can't wait to see her.'

0:23:56 > 0:23:58There she is, Honey. All fit and better.

0:23:58 > 0:24:02- Did everything go OK?- Did everything go OK? Tell him, girls.- Yeah.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04Yeah, they did a grand job.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06We'll take her home. Thank you very much.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09- Bye-bye.- Bye!- Bye!

0:24:09 > 0:24:13'Animal fixing at its very best. An eagle helped,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15'and Honey home and happy.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18- And there she goes. Have you enjoyed it, girls?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21- What's been your best bit?- Operation, it were really interesting.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25- Would you like to work with animals more in the future?- Yeah, definitely.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28We can safely say you've had the full Go Wild experience.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30- BOTH:- Yeah!

0:24:35 > 0:24:38'Rory and Fraser have been working hard getting to grips

0:24:38 > 0:24:42'with gannets on the brilliant Bass Rock in East Scotland.'

0:24:42 > 0:24:45- Pretty cool, aren't they?- Yeah. - 'But the day isn't over yet.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47'Maggie's got another surprise in store.'

0:24:47 > 0:24:50Right, boys, you've seen the gannets close up.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54You know what you're going to see now? You haven't seen them eating.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56We're going to see them plunge diving,

0:24:56 > 0:24:58and it's an incredible sight,

0:24:58 > 0:24:59but we need to put some fish in the bucket

0:24:59 > 0:25:02so we can throw this overboard for them.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04'Throwing fish into the water is called chumming.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07'Our pals aren't too keen on handling slimy fish at first,

0:25:07 > 0:25:09'but they get stuck in, anyway.'

0:25:09 > 0:25:12- Look at this!- Ugh!

0:25:12 > 0:25:16I'm sorry, fish. I might have to chuck you overboard.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19'Chumming gives our research team

0:25:19 > 0:25:21'a brilliant opportunity to study the birds close up.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24'First, herring gulls come to snap up the nosh.'

0:25:24 > 0:25:27Oh, yeah! There's a mob!

0:25:29 > 0:25:33- 'And then the gannets get wind of the grub...'- Gannets, look!

0:25:33 > 0:25:37'..and come crashing into the water from as high as thirty metres.'

0:25:37 > 0:25:40There, see? We've got a gannet, already.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Oh yeah! He's just got a fish!

0:25:42 > 0:25:45You see? He just swallowed a fish.

0:25:45 > 0:25:46This is so cool!

0:25:46 > 0:25:50'These birds can dive in at over 60 miles per hour.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53'Their nostrils are inside the beak so water doesn't go up inside them.'

0:25:55 > 0:25:56Whoa!

0:25:56 > 0:25:58Oh, look!

0:25:59 > 0:26:00So cool!

0:26:00 > 0:26:03'And the high-impact speed dives mean that gannets can go deeper

0:26:03 > 0:26:06'to catch fish that others can't.'

0:26:06 > 0:26:09Did you see that? Did you see how deep that one went?

0:26:09 > 0:26:12'And they swallow them whole. No messing. Down in one.'

0:26:16 > 0:26:20Look at that one! Look, look, look! They're all diving in.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22'Rory and Fraser, you've been

0:26:22 > 0:26:25'first class hands-on wildlife researching wonders.'

0:26:25 > 0:26:30'And check this out. They're even steering the team back to shore.'

0:26:30 > 0:26:33- Have you done this before?- No. - Well, you're very good.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41Boys, you smell of bird poo.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44I bet they do.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48There you go, boys.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50So what gets me is that you came here

0:26:50 > 0:26:52and you really didn't like big, flappy birds,

0:26:52 > 0:26:55and they don't get bigger than this do they?

0:26:55 > 0:26:57- No.- How big, with their wings out?

0:26:57 > 0:27:00- Two metres.- Two metres? That's bigger than that.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03It's quite a learning experience. You learned a lot from being there.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06- Yeah.- And throughout your years of being on this planet,

0:27:06 > 0:27:09was it one of the most exciting things you've done so far?

0:27:09 > 0:27:11- Yeah.- Yeah.- It was?

0:27:11 > 0:27:13'Go Wild-ing at its greatest.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16'That's a flappy bird fear fixed forever.'

0:27:19 > 0:27:20Not all this again.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23I still can't believe that I was beaten by Tiny Tony.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27So I've read The Hare And The Tortoise and I've got a cunning plan.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30- Rematch?- No. I'm going to race a hare.

0:27:30 > 0:27:31- A hare?- A hare.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34Do the honours.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39On your marks, get set...

0:27:39 > 0:27:42You're going down, my son.
