0:00:03 > 0:00:07# There are lots of things all around
0:00:07 > 0:00:10# Exciting things that surround us
0:00:10 > 0:00:12But how does it work?
0:00:12 > 0:00:13# Do you know?
0:00:13 > 0:00:15How is it made?
0:00:15 > 0:00:17# Do you know?
0:00:17 > 0:00:20# Things that go up Things that go down
0:00:20 > 0:00:23# Things that go pop! Things that go round
0:00:23 > 0:00:27# With special cameras to show you inside
0:00:27 > 0:00:30# It's going to be a big surprise
0:00:30 > 0:00:32But how does it work?
0:00:32 > 0:00:33# Do you know?
0:00:33 > 0:00:35How is it made?
0:00:35 > 0:00:37# Do you know? #
0:00:38 > 0:00:40Let's find out!
0:00:42 > 0:00:45Yeah! Yeah!
0:00:45 > 0:00:48SHE LAUGHS Woohoo!
0:00:54 > 0:00:58Hello, I'm Maddy, and today I'm having a fun day out.
0:00:58 > 0:00:59I'm at a water park.
0:00:59 > 0:01:03Have you been to a water park? I LOVE them.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07Playing in the different pools, splashing round, getting wet.
0:01:07 > 0:01:11Remember, you must never play near water without an adult.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15Slides are my favourite.
0:01:16 > 0:01:20But I love really big slides, like those ones.
0:01:22 > 0:01:24Do you know how a water slide works?
0:01:27 > 0:01:30Can you see all that water coming down the slide?
0:01:30 > 0:01:34The water helps to move you down and it also makes you go faster
0:01:34 > 0:01:36and stops you getting stuck.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39But where does all that water come from and where does it go?
0:01:39 > 0:01:41Let's find out.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47When you go on a water slide,
0:01:47 > 0:01:50the first thing you need to do is climb to the top.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57Now, this is the top of the slide.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01And can you see there's lots of water running down it?
0:02:01 > 0:02:03This is what's going to help me slide down.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06But first, I need to sit down, like this.
0:02:07 > 0:02:09All I need to do is push off.
0:02:09 > 0:02:14But first, I'm going to put my special camera on my head
0:02:14 > 0:02:19so you can see exactly what it looks like as I go down the slide.
0:02:19 > 0:02:20Are you ready?
0:02:23 > 0:02:25Whoo!
0:02:25 > 0:02:27Yeah!
0:02:29 > 0:02:30Yay!
0:02:31 > 0:02:36'The water is going really fast - and taking me with it.'
0:02:36 > 0:02:38SHE CHUCKLES
0:02:38 > 0:02:40Oh, no! Oh, no!
0:02:40 > 0:02:42SHE SCREAMS
0:02:42 > 0:02:46'It's good my special camera is waterproof!'
0:02:46 > 0:02:48That was so much fun.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52Did you see how the water was carrying me down the slide?
0:02:52 > 0:02:54The water is always flowing downwards
0:02:54 > 0:02:58and when you go on a slide, you go down too.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01And that's because of something called gravity.
0:03:04 > 0:03:08Gravity is what makes things fall to the ground.
0:03:08 > 0:03:11It's what keeps us and everything around us firmly on the ground
0:03:11 > 0:03:14instead of floating around in the air.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16Things like this ball.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20What do you think will happen when I let go of this ball?
0:03:20 > 0:03:23Will it go up, or will it go down?
0:03:23 > 0:03:27What do you think? Let's go.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31The ball fell down and that's because of gravity.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33But if gravity pulls things down,
0:03:33 > 0:03:36how does the water get to the top of the slide?
0:03:36 > 0:03:38To find out, I need to get dried.
0:03:41 > 0:03:42Ta-da!
0:03:44 > 0:03:47Come with me. I've got something exciting to show you.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00Right now we are underneath the swimming pool.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03Not very many people get to come down here.
0:04:03 > 0:04:05It's called the pump room,
0:04:05 > 0:04:09and it's full of pipes and machines called pumps.
0:04:09 > 0:04:13A pump is a machine that moves liquids, like water,
0:04:13 > 0:04:15from one place to another through pipes
0:04:15 > 0:04:17like these all around me.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24These pumps are working all the time to pump water
0:04:24 > 0:04:27to all those slides around the park.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30And this is how a water pump works.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33Underneath the pool is a tank called the sump.
0:04:33 > 0:04:37The water is sucked up from the sump and into a big pipe.
0:04:37 > 0:04:39It's a bit like sucking a drink with a straw.
0:04:39 > 0:04:43The water travels along the pipe to a big spinning wheel.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46The wheel spins the water around very fast
0:04:46 > 0:04:48and pushes it up another pipe.
0:04:48 > 0:04:53The water is pushed up and up until it reaches the top of the slide.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56Now gravity makes it fall down the slide,
0:04:56 > 0:05:01and when it gets to the end, it whooshes into the swimming pool.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05At the side of the swimming pool is a hole called an inlet.
0:05:05 > 0:05:10Some of the water goes into the hole so that the pool doesn't overflow.
0:05:10 > 0:05:14It's a bit like the hole on the side of your bathtub.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17This water goes through a filter, which cleans it,
0:05:17 > 0:05:20and then along the last pipe into the sump,
0:05:20 > 0:05:22where it's ready to be used again.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24How interesting is that?
0:05:24 > 0:05:28So this pipe here is the one that sucks the water up from the sump,
0:05:28 > 0:05:30which is just behind this wall,
0:05:30 > 0:05:35and inside this blue bit of machinery is the spinning wheel
0:05:35 > 0:05:38which whizzes the water round really fast
0:05:38 > 0:05:41and pushes it up to the top of the water slide.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44It looks a bit like a blue snail, doesn't it?
0:05:44 > 0:05:47Let's see what happens when Mike turns the pump on.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50MACHINERY WHIRS Ooh!
0:05:50 > 0:05:52Listen to the sound of the pump.
0:05:52 > 0:05:56Wait a minute, there's another stage.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59MACHINERY WHIRS
0:05:59 > 0:06:03Ooh! That's the sound of the spinning wheel whizzing round
0:06:03 > 0:06:07and all that water being pushed up to the top of the slide.
0:06:09 > 0:06:10Can you hear?
0:06:10 > 0:06:12MACHINERY WHIRS Zzz!
0:06:15 > 0:06:18Being underneath the swimming pool was so exciting.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22I loved seeing all of that water rushing out of the slide too.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24What was your favourite bit?
0:06:24 > 0:06:27Do you remember the name of the machine
0:06:27 > 0:06:29that sends water around the water park?
0:06:29 > 0:06:31That's right, it's the pump.
0:06:34 > 0:06:38Did you hear the sound the big spinning wheel inside the pump made?
0:06:38 > 0:06:40MACHINERY WHIRS
0:06:40 > 0:06:45And did you see how the water flowed down the slide when I was on it?
0:06:45 > 0:06:47SHE SCREAMS
0:06:53 > 0:06:56So, the next time you go on a water slide
0:06:56 > 0:06:58you'll know just how it works.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02There are lots of different places you can go to on a fun day out.
0:07:02 > 0:07:06But there's always one thing I like to have as a special treat.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08Do you know what it is?
0:07:08 > 0:07:10It's ice cream.
0:07:10 > 0:07:14Hello. Can I have a strawberry ice cream with sprinkles, please?
0:07:14 > 0:07:16- Of course you can.- Thanks.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29- Ooh! Thank you.- You're welcome.
0:07:29 > 0:07:31Ooh, what a treat!
0:07:31 > 0:07:33What's your favourite ice cream?
0:07:33 > 0:07:36Mine is strawberry.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38But do you know what this bit is called?
0:07:38 > 0:07:42This is the ice cream cone, and it's a really clever shape
0:07:42 > 0:07:45cos it holds the ice cream whilst you're eating it
0:07:45 > 0:07:48and then you can eat the cone afterwards.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52But do you know how an ice cream cone is made?
0:07:52 > 0:07:53Let's find out.
0:08:01 > 0:08:06An ice cream cone gets made here, in a huge ice cream cone factory.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10The ingredients that make up the ice cream cones
0:08:10 > 0:08:12have to be carefully weighed.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18This big machine is called a mixer.
0:08:18 > 0:08:23Ice-cold water and sugar are put inside and mixed together
0:08:23 > 0:08:27until the sugar completely dissolves.
0:08:27 > 0:08:28Wow!
0:08:30 > 0:08:34Oh, it smells so sweet. It smells a bit like popcorn.
0:08:36 > 0:08:41Now other ingredients are added, and the main ones are vegetable oil,
0:08:41 > 0:08:43which your family might use,
0:08:43 > 0:08:45and flour, just like you use to make a cake.
0:08:45 > 0:08:49But flour can get a little bit messy.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51In it goes!
0:08:53 > 0:08:57There's flour absolutely everywhere.
0:08:57 > 0:09:00'Next, it's time for the vegetable oil.
0:09:00 > 0:09:02'Here it comes!'
0:09:05 > 0:09:09MACHINERY WHIRS Whoa!
0:09:09 > 0:09:11Listen to that sound.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14It's churning and gurgling like the inside of a volcano.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17MIXTURE GURGLES In the middle of the mixer,
0:09:17 > 0:09:21there's a metal arm that is spinning round and round.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24Let's get a closer look with my special camera.
0:09:26 > 0:09:30The mixture is getting lovely and smooth.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32And the metal arm makes sure that it's light
0:09:32 > 0:09:34and has lots of air in it.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43'When the mixing is finished, it's poured into another container.'
0:09:43 > 0:09:46SHE LAUGHS
0:09:46 > 0:09:49The finished mixture is called batter,
0:09:49 > 0:09:53and it's just like the batter you use to make pancakes.
0:09:53 > 0:09:57Look at the way it's just splatting into this big tank.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01And now we're off to the cone-making machine.
0:10:03 > 0:10:04Beep, beep!
0:10:10 > 0:10:13Our tank of batter is hooked up to the machine
0:10:13 > 0:10:15and we're ready to go.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19The batter is pushed along this blue pipe
0:10:19 > 0:10:22and into this metal moving arm,
0:10:22 > 0:10:26and at the end is a nozzle which squirts out five blobs of batter
0:10:26 > 0:10:28onto this hot moving plate.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33The five blobs of batter look a little bit like
0:10:33 > 0:10:35a flower at the beginning.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40The moving hotplate is really special
0:10:40 > 0:10:43cos it has lots of little squares cut into it
0:10:43 > 0:10:48and that's what gives the ice cream cones that crisscross pattern
0:10:48 > 0:10:50and it's called a waffle pattern.
0:10:55 > 0:10:59Now, watch how a lid closes down on each blob of batter
0:10:59 > 0:11:02and squashes it into a pancake shape.
0:11:02 > 0:11:04It's ready to be cooked.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06And that happens in here.
0:11:06 > 0:11:10The moving plate loops around this hot oven,
0:11:10 > 0:11:13giving each circle of batter a quick bake.
0:11:22 > 0:11:27And here are the cooked circles. They look like pancakes, don't they?
0:11:29 > 0:11:33At the moment, the pancakes are still warm and bendy.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36But the moment they start to cool down, they go hard.
0:11:36 > 0:11:41So this machine has to twist them into a cone shape really quickly
0:11:41 > 0:11:45otherwise they'll cool down and it will be too late.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51The pancakes are twisted into shape
0:11:51 > 0:11:54and they pop out of a chute at the end of the machine.
0:11:57 > 0:12:01Now the cones are being pushed onto this conveyor belt so they
0:12:01 > 0:12:05can cool down and eventually be put into packets at the other end.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16And here is a finished ice cream cone.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18It looks great, doesn't it?
0:12:18 > 0:12:21Look! You can even see that lovely waffle pattern.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24All that's missing is some ice cream.
0:12:26 > 0:12:30Some of the cones are made extra special by decorating them.
0:12:31 > 0:12:35There are lots of different types of ice cream cones.
0:12:35 > 0:12:39Some are dipped in chocolate and covered in sherbert.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41Some are covered in sprinkles.
0:12:41 > 0:12:45And now they're ready to eat for a special treat. Yummy!
0:12:47 > 0:12:52What was your favourite bit about seeing how ice cream cones are made?
0:12:52 > 0:12:55Can you remember the name of the mixture
0:12:55 > 0:12:57used to make ice cream cones?
0:12:57 > 0:13:00Yes, it's called batter.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03Did you hear the sound the mixer made?
0:13:03 > 0:13:05MACHINERY WHIRS
0:13:07 > 0:13:11And did you see the batter being squirted onto the hotplate?
0:13:18 > 0:13:20So the next time you go to a water park
0:13:20 > 0:13:24and have a go on a water slide, you'll know how it works,
0:13:24 > 0:13:27and if you have an ice cream as a special treat afterwards,
0:13:27 > 0:13:29you'll know how the cone was made
0:13:29 > 0:13:32and how it gets that lovely waffle pattern.
0:13:32 > 0:13:36This is very yummy, and I'll see you next time.
0:13:38 > 0:13:42# There are lots of things all around
0:13:42 > 0:13:45# Exciting things that surround us
0:13:45 > 0:13:47But how does it work?
0:13:47 > 0:13:48# Do you know?
0:13:48 > 0:13:50How is it made?
0:13:50 > 0:13:52# Do you know?
0:13:52 > 0:13:55- # Do you know? # - Let's find out!
