0:00:03 > 0:00:07# There are lots of things all around us
0:00:07 > 0:00:10# Exciting things that surround us
0:00:10 > 0:00:14- # But how does it work? - Do you know?
0:00:14 > 0:00:17- # How is it made? - Do you know?
0:00:17 > 0:00:20# Things that go up Things that go down
0:00:20 > 0:00:24# Things that go pop! Things that go around
0:00:24 > 0:00:27# With special cameras to show you inside
0:00:27 > 0:00:30# It's going to be a big surprise
0:00:30 > 0:00:33- # But how does it work? - Do you know?
0:00:33 > 0:00:37- # How is it made? - Do you know?
0:00:37 > 0:00:41- # Do you know? - Let's find out! #
0:00:41 > 0:00:45Hello, I'm Maddie. And today, I'm looking at transport
0:00:45 > 0:00:48and the different ways you can travel around.
0:00:48 > 0:00:50Oh, look! There's a boat!
0:01:00 > 0:01:03I love boats! Do you?
0:01:03 > 0:01:06I like the way they glide about on top of the water.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09But do you know how a boat moves?
0:01:09 > 0:01:12How does it work? Let's find out.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16How does it work?
0:01:16 > 0:01:18A boat!
0:01:19 > 0:01:21Come on, we're going for a boat ride.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33Let's go! Ha-ha-ha-ha! And we're off!
0:01:45 > 0:01:48Whee! Hee-hee-hee!
0:01:48 > 0:01:50This is so much fun!
0:01:50 > 0:01:54You can see there are lots of different parts to a boat.
0:01:54 > 0:01:58That's the front, the pointy bit, and it's called the bow.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01And this is the back, it's called the stern.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04And then that is the engine.
0:02:04 > 0:02:07And in the middle, we have places to sit and put our things.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13At the bow, there is something called an anchor.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17Peter lowers the anchor into the water, to the bottom of the lake,
0:02:17 > 0:02:21where it will hook into the ground and hold the boat in one place.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27But there are lots of parts of the boat you can't see.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31Do you know why? It's because they're in the water.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33I know!
0:02:33 > 0:02:37Let's use my special camera and this underwater light
0:02:37 > 0:02:39to see if we can get a closer look.
0:02:46 > 0:02:51Now you can see underneath the boat, and this is what makes it move.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55This is called a propeller.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57Here's a little toy boat.
0:02:57 > 0:03:01You might have one like it to play with in the bath.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04And this one has propellers, too. Can you see?
0:03:04 > 0:03:08The propeller looks a bit like a fan that goes round and round
0:03:08 > 0:03:11and cools you down, doesn't it?
0:03:11 > 0:03:15But on a real boat, the propeller is powered by an engine.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17That's what makes the boat move.
0:03:20 > 0:03:24The engine and propeller are attached to each other.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27Petrol goes in the boat engine.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31And when it starts, it makes a big brum-brum noise.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33WHIRRING
0:03:33 > 0:03:36Inside, the petrol starts to burn.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39And as it does, it creates a powerful gas.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43The gas pushes a long pole called a piston
0:03:43 > 0:03:46backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52As the piston moves, it turns a cog at the bottom.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54This cog turns another cog
0:03:54 > 0:03:57attached to the propeller outside the boat.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01As the propeller spins round and round,
0:04:01 > 0:04:03it pushes the boat through the water.
0:04:07 > 0:04:08Let's go!
0:04:17 > 0:04:21Look at the propeller. You can see the blades spinning around,
0:04:21 > 0:04:26pushing the water away behind it and sending the boat forwards.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34To take a closer look at the propeller,
0:04:34 > 0:04:38we are using something called a winch to pull the boat in.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40MADDIE LAUGHS
0:04:40 > 0:04:44I'm helping pulling the boat in. Doesn't the winch sound great?
0:04:44 > 0:04:46CLICKING
0:04:49 > 0:04:51Clickety-click!
0:04:59 > 0:05:01The propeller has three blades.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03One, two, three.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10These three blades help push the boat through the water.
0:05:13 > 0:05:16Being on a boat is such great fun!
0:05:16 > 0:05:19But if you were on a boat, where would you like to go?
0:05:22 > 0:05:25Can you remember the name of the front of the boat?
0:05:25 > 0:05:29It's the pointy bit and it's called the bow.
0:05:29 > 0:05:33Did you hear the winch as it pulled the boat out of the water?
0:05:33 > 0:05:35It went clickety-click.
0:05:38 > 0:05:42And did you see the propeller spinning round and round?
0:05:52 > 0:05:56So next time you see a boat, you'll know just how it works.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59There are lots of other ways to travel.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02On the water, on the ground, in the sky.
0:06:02 > 0:06:05What things travel up in the sky?
0:06:05 > 0:06:07There are aeroplanes, helicopters
0:06:07 > 0:06:11and my personal favourite, the hot-air balloon.
0:06:17 > 0:06:22This is just a toy hot-air balloon. The real thing is much bigger.
0:06:22 > 0:06:26But do you know how a hot-air balloon is made?
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Let's find out.
0:06:30 > 0:06:31How is it made?
0:06:31 > 0:06:34A hot-air balloon.
0:06:36 > 0:06:39Hot-air balloons are really big.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42They have a basket for people to ride in
0:06:42 > 0:06:46and a huge balloon which lifts the basket high into the sky.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50And this is where they're made.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54Yes, this is a hot-air balloon factory!
0:06:56 > 0:06:58And that is a lot of material.
0:07:00 > 0:07:05The material is called nylon and it arrives in the factory in big rolls.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08So, how does all this become a balloon?
0:07:11 > 0:07:15First, the material needs to be cut into smaller pieces
0:07:15 > 0:07:17with a small, round cutter.
0:07:19 > 0:07:24Here it is. It fits inside the machine, just here.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27Let's see it cut the material into smaller pieces
0:07:27 > 0:07:30using my special camera.
0:07:31 > 0:07:36With my special camera in place, it's time to turn the machine on.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39The cutter is programmed by a computer
0:07:39 > 0:07:41to cut the strips into the right size.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43It moves along really fast.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48It doesn't look like it's doing anything,
0:07:48 > 0:07:50but believe it or not,
0:07:50 > 0:07:54that is cutting the material into smaller pieces.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59It takes lots and lots of these strips of nylon
0:07:59 > 0:08:03to make a hot-air balloon, but how are they joined together?
0:08:08 > 0:08:11That happens here, in the sewing room.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18The sewing machine joins up the edges with thread
0:08:18 > 0:08:22using a special stitch so the material won't tear.
0:08:23 > 0:08:24Listen to that sound.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26WHIRRING
0:08:31 > 0:08:33It's a bit like a jigsaw.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37The pieces have to be sewn together in the right order
0:08:37 > 0:08:41so that you end up with a perfect-looking balloon.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44Whilst the balloon is being sewn together,
0:08:44 > 0:08:48in another part of the factory, the team are working on the basket.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51The basket is made from willow,
0:08:51 > 0:08:57a type of tree that is light and bends into shapes easily.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59Look how the wood has been woven.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05It's like a bigger version of a basket you might have at home.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07Like a bin!
0:09:07 > 0:09:09Or a fruit basket.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12Have you got a basket at home?
0:09:12 > 0:09:17But this basket is going to carry something much heavier than fruit.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21It's amazing to think that this will soon carry people high,
0:09:21 > 0:09:24high up into the sky.
0:09:25 > 0:09:29Back upstairs, one of the balloons is ready.
0:09:30 > 0:09:33But do you know how much material
0:09:33 > 0:09:35goes into making just one balloon?
0:09:37 > 0:09:41Wow! Look how much material there is.
0:09:41 > 0:09:45It's like the biggest superhero cape ever!
0:09:45 > 0:09:48But to see just how much material there really is,
0:09:48 > 0:09:50let's fill it with air.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56WHIRRING
0:09:58 > 0:10:03Wow! It's enormous! It's so big, it won't even fit inside this room.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08Big moment. Let's go inside!
0:10:10 > 0:10:15Oh! That is amazing!
0:10:18 > 0:10:23Let's go on an explore around the balloon with my special camera.
0:10:26 > 0:10:30Look just how huge this balloon is!
0:10:30 > 0:10:33You can see how all of the pieces of material
0:10:33 > 0:10:36have been stitched together.
0:10:36 > 0:10:41There's actually a thousand metres of material here.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43If you stretched all of that out,
0:10:43 > 0:10:47it would be the same as 80 big buses in a row!
0:10:51 > 0:10:53HORN BEEPS
0:10:53 > 0:10:56So we have the balloon and we've got the basket,
0:10:56 > 0:10:58now we just need to see it fly.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04The team are getting a hot-air balloon ready to fly.
0:11:07 > 0:11:11First, they have to unpack all the material and lay it out flat.
0:11:13 > 0:11:17I'm so excited to see all of this flat material inflate.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27Next, the team are going to inflate the material with air
0:11:27 > 0:11:30using a fan so that it blows up.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33It's a bit like a party balloon.
0:11:35 > 0:11:37Only a lot bigger.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40Where'd it go?
0:11:40 > 0:11:44Wow! This hot-air balloon is enormous!
0:11:47 > 0:11:49This is the gas burner.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52It makes the air inside the balloon hot,
0:11:52 > 0:11:57which lifts it off the ground and makes it fly.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02Look at that, a giant white balloon!
0:12:02 > 0:12:04What do you think it looks like?
0:12:04 > 0:12:07I think it looks a bit like a huge egg.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12Just look at this hot-air balloon.
0:12:12 > 0:12:18Isn't it incredible how a flat piece of material can turn into this!
0:12:20 > 0:12:23I loved seeing how a hot-air balloon was made.
0:12:23 > 0:12:26What was your favourite bit?
0:12:27 > 0:12:30Do you remember the name of the part of the balloon
0:12:30 > 0:12:32that carries people?
0:12:32 > 0:12:35That's right, it's the basket.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38Did you like the sound of the sewing machine
0:12:38 > 0:12:41when it sewed all the material together?
0:12:41 > 0:12:44WHIRRING
0:12:44 > 0:12:49And did you see how big the balloon was when it filled up with hot air?
0:12:49 > 0:12:51It was huge!
0:12:57 > 0:13:00So now we know how a hot-air balloon is made.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03With lots of material, lots of sewing
0:13:03 > 0:13:06and this bendy wood that's used to make the basket.
0:13:06 > 0:13:08And now we know how a boat works,
0:13:08 > 0:13:12using a propeller under the water to push the water away.
0:13:12 > 0:13:16Right, there's only one thing left to do. Fly!
0:13:19 > 0:13:21Up, up and away!
0:13:26 > 0:13:28I'll see you next time. Bye!
0:13:32 > 0:13:36# There are lots of things all around us
0:13:36 > 0:13:39# Exciting things that surround us
0:13:39 > 0:13:42- # But how does it work? - Do you know?
0:13:42 > 0:13:46- # How is it made? - Do you know?
0:13:46 > 0:13:50- # Do you know? - Let's find out! #
