0:00:14 > 0:00:17# Summer, autumn, winter, spring
0:00:17 > 0:00:19# Ploughing, planting, harvesting
0:00:19 > 0:00:23# With JB and Storm to lead the way
0:00:23 > 0:00:28# Come join us down on the farm today. #
0:00:28 > 0:00:31COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!
0:00:31 > 0:00:35Hi, I'm JB and welcome to Down On The Farm.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38In winter, there isn't much grass for cows,
0:00:38 > 0:00:41so we make sure they have plenty to eat.
0:00:41 > 0:00:45While I get food for the cows here, let's see what Storm is up to.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58This is farmer Ben.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02He has over 200 cows on his farm.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09And I'm going to help him today.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11- Hi, Ben.- Morning, Storm.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14Thank you, but I thought I was here to help with the cows.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17- We've got robots helping us with the cows.- Robots?
0:01:17 > 0:01:19That sounds amazing!
0:01:19 > 0:01:22Yes, they do lots of things like milking and feeding.
0:01:22 > 0:01:25I can see from my phone if anything needs doing.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28- Some cows need milking now. - Well, we better go.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36Well, I am all ready to help out with some milking.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40There's no need, the robot does all the milking work for us.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42I may as well take these off then.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46When a cow is ready to be milked, it walks into the milking machine
0:01:46 > 0:01:49and the robot's arm swings underneath it.
0:01:52 > 0:01:57Lasers help the robot find where to put each of the milking tubes,
0:01:57 > 0:01:59and the robot milks the cow.
0:02:02 > 0:02:05It must be really helpful to have all these robots around?
0:02:05 > 0:02:09Yes, we don't have to get up so early and we have lots more time.
0:02:09 > 0:02:11What do you do with your spare time?
0:02:11 > 0:02:15We spend it checking on the cows, feeding them and bedding them down.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18Ben puts silage down for the cows to eat every day.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22This is where we feed the cows. Sometimes it can get quite messy.
0:02:22 > 0:02:26- I'm happy to help clean it up.- There's no need.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28We have a robot to do that. It's a silage pusher.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30Here it comes now.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34Now, THAT is clever.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40So how does it work?
0:02:40 > 0:02:43It's been programmed where to go, and as it moves,
0:02:43 > 0:02:47the bottom spins around and pushes the feed closer to the cows.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50- Does it not bump into anything? - No, it has a sensor on top,
0:02:50 > 0:02:53so it knows if it's going to hit anything and stops.
0:02:53 > 0:02:58I used to use a tractor to do this job, now the robot does it for me.
0:02:59 > 0:03:01Another sensor can tell when
0:03:01 > 0:03:04the robot has reached the end of the route.
0:03:04 > 0:03:08Then it returns home and recharges its batteries.
0:03:09 > 0:03:13So, you've got robots to help milk the cows and feed the cows,
0:03:13 > 0:03:16you must have robots to help you clean up all this poo?
0:03:16 > 0:03:22- Not yet, I'm afraid, Storm. That's where you can help me.- Thanks.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24Yuck!
0:03:25 > 0:03:29Now, let's find out what ducks do at this time of year.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37Winter can be the best time of year to see wild ducks.
0:03:37 > 0:03:41Lots of different breeds arrive from colder parts of Europe
0:03:41 > 0:03:45to find food, joining ducks that live here all year round.
0:03:47 > 0:03:49The male ducks, called drakes,
0:03:49 > 0:03:52have their smartest feathers at this time of year.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56They can be seen showing off to the females,
0:03:56 > 0:04:00displaying their colours and calling noisily.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02If you see a duck bobbing about in the water,
0:04:02 > 0:04:07with its tail in the air, it's a type of dabbling duck.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10These ducks dabble around near the surface of the water
0:04:10 > 0:04:12to find weeds to eat.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15Mallards like this one are dabblers.
0:04:15 > 0:04:21Others, like these tufted ducks dive right down to the bottom to feed.
0:04:21 > 0:04:25Diving ducks can spend a long time underwater searching
0:04:25 > 0:04:29for small creatures to eat, like pond snails.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32Of course, water can freeze over in winter,
0:04:32 > 0:04:35making it hard for ducks to collect food.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39If this happens, they will search for holes in the ice
0:04:39 > 0:04:42or fly off to find somewhere warmer.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55Today, I'm in Wales to help look after some donkeys,
0:04:55 > 0:05:00and I'm really excited, because I haven't met many before.
0:05:00 > 0:05:04Jess and her helpers are looking after the donkeys today.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07- Hi, everyone. ALL:- Hi, Storm!
0:05:07 > 0:05:12- So, who do we have here? ALL:- Donkeys!
0:05:12 > 0:05:14This is Arthur.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17This one's called Millen.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20The black and white one is Madoc.
0:05:20 > 0:05:21This is Coco.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25There's lots to do to keep them healthy in winter.
0:05:25 > 0:05:27Let's get to work.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34First, we've got to groom the donkeys.
0:05:34 > 0:05:38So, why do we have to brush the donkeys?
0:05:38 > 0:05:41To get rid of mud and dirt.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44- And so they look nice and clean and tidy.- Yes.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51His coat is really thick.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54Their coats aren't waterproof, so in winter,
0:05:54 > 0:05:58they stay inside the stables to keep warm and dry.
0:05:59 > 0:06:03There we go, all clean and tidied. So, what's next?
0:06:03 > 0:06:06Now we are going to go and pick Coco's hooves.
0:06:06 > 0:06:10We have to check the donkey's hooves every day in winter.
0:06:10 > 0:06:11Why do you do that?
0:06:11 > 0:06:15To make sure there's nothing in the hooves to make it sore.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19- What do you think Jess looks for?- Rocks and stones.- Mud.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Donkey smelly poo.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25Jess carefully scrapes away any mud or stones
0:06:25 > 0:06:28from each of Coco's hooves.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34I use a special tool to pick out the donkeys' hooves.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36It doesn't hurt them.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38Now we know their feet are healthy,
0:06:38 > 0:06:41- we can take some of the donkeys for a walk.- Let's go!
0:06:41 > 0:06:44It's Coco and Arthur's turn today.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51The donkeys are walked like this to make sure they get plenty
0:06:51 > 0:06:53of exercise in the winter months
0:06:53 > 0:06:56when they spend a lot of time inside.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59And then once the donkeys have stretched their legs,
0:06:59 > 0:07:02it's back to the shelter.
0:07:02 > 0:07:06Well, I've had an amazing day helping to look after these donkeys.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09- What about you guys? ALL:- Yes!
0:07:09 > 0:07:12Now, it's time for a frosty winter poem.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18The night is cold
0:07:18 > 0:07:20The sky is clear
0:07:20 > 0:07:24As if by magic, frost appears
0:07:26 > 0:07:29A dazzling layer of crystals fair
0:07:29 > 0:07:33Their spikes of ice freeze in the air
0:07:35 > 0:07:38All it touches turns to white
0:07:40 > 0:07:43It glitters in the morning light
0:07:44 > 0:07:48Like the finest crust of fairy dust
0:07:48 > 0:07:51I wish it would stay, but melt it must.
0:07:58 > 0:07:59MEOW
0:07:59 > 0:08:01Lots of animals help farmers.
0:08:01 > 0:08:05Horses pull trailers and dogs round up sheep.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08Today, I've come to meet farmer Carol
0:08:08 > 0:08:10and the cats that help on her farm.
0:08:12 > 0:08:17- Hi, everyone.- Hi, JB.- I hear you have some really helpful cats.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20Yes, we do. We have nine cats on the farm.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22They live outside and inside the barns
0:08:22 > 0:08:24and they have a very important job.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27- And what do they do? - They catch mice.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30The mice on the farm eat the other animals' food,
0:08:30 > 0:08:32and we have to stop them.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35The cats help us by catching or scaring them away.
0:08:35 > 0:08:39These cats aren't pets, but Carol and her helpers do
0:08:39 > 0:08:43- give them some food to eat. - It's feeding time now.- Sounds good.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58This cat is a feral cat.
0:08:58 > 0:09:02He was born without a home or anyone to look after him.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05He was rescued and brought here to keep him safe.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08Today, we have two new rescue cats coming to the farm.
0:09:08 > 0:09:12- Can you help us get everything ready for them?- Absolutely.
0:09:14 > 0:09:18When the cats first arrive, they stay in a pen inside a barn.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22This helps them to settle in before they meet the other cats outside.
0:09:22 > 0:09:26- It's safe and warm in here. - Is there anything else they need?
0:09:26 > 0:09:29- Water and bedding.- That's right.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33This straw keeps the pen warm and dry.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36And the cats will have a cosy place to sleep.
0:09:36 > 0:09:38There's some water to drink, too.
0:09:38 > 0:09:42- Is that everything?- Yes, and the cats are about to arrive.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45Great, I'll go and meet them.
0:09:45 > 0:09:49This is Hayley. She rescues feral cats and finds new homes for them.
0:09:49 > 0:09:53- Hi, Hayley.- Hi, JB.- Well, we've got everything ready for these two.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56Great, let's get them inside.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04OK, guys, we've got the cats.
0:10:04 > 0:10:08So, we need to be nice and quiet so we don't scare them.
0:10:14 > 0:10:18Oh, look, he's popped straight into his new bed.
0:10:28 > 0:10:31Hayley, how long before they can start looking for mice?
0:10:31 > 0:10:35About two weeks, once they are used to the farm.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37We'd better leave them to settle in.
0:10:37 > 0:10:40Now, here are some tips for when you are outdoors
0:10:40 > 0:10:42in the darker winter days.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48It's fun to play outdoors and go for walks.
0:10:49 > 0:10:54In winter, it gets dark early, so make sure you can be seen.
0:10:54 > 0:10:56Wear bright clothes
0:10:56 > 0:11:01and take a torch when you're out and about.
0:11:06 > 0:11:10Lots of people put glass in the recycling bin,
0:11:10 > 0:11:12but what happens to it next?
0:11:12 > 0:11:17Today, we're at a glass waste plant to find out...
0:11:18 > 0:11:21..and to show us around is Ryan.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24The glass is brought here in big recycling lorries
0:11:24 > 0:11:27and put onto a long conveyor belt.
0:11:27 > 0:11:30The first steps in the glass recycling process is
0:11:30 > 0:11:35to remove rubbish which is not made from glass and we do this by hand.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40Next, special machines remove smaller bits of rubbish,
0:11:40 > 0:11:44then the glass is dried in a big dryer ready for separating.
0:11:47 > 0:11:50The glass is sorted into three colours...
0:11:51 > 0:11:53..clear...
0:11:53 > 0:11:54..brown...
0:11:54 > 0:11:55..and green.
0:11:55 > 0:11:59Once the glass has been through all of our machines,
0:11:59 > 0:12:01we end up with this. This is called cullet.
0:12:01 > 0:12:06It now goes away to another factory to be remade into new glass bottles.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09At the glass factory, the cullet is melted together
0:12:09 > 0:12:12with other materials, in a big furnace.
0:12:15 > 0:12:19The melted glass is cut into small pieces called gobs.
0:12:21 > 0:12:26Each gob has exactly the right amount of glass to make one bottle.
0:12:26 > 0:12:30They are dropped into moulds and blown into shape using air,
0:12:30 > 0:12:32just like blowing up a balloon.
0:12:36 > 0:12:40The new bottles are reheated and cooled down slowly.
0:12:40 > 0:12:43This makes them really strong.
0:12:45 > 0:12:49The bottles are sprayed with a protective coating.
0:12:49 > 0:12:54Finally, after being checked, the bottles are ready to be used.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56If they're not good enough,
0:12:56 > 0:12:59they are melted again and made into new bottles.
0:13:00 > 0:13:05That's what makes glass a real recycling superhero,
0:13:05 > 0:13:08because it can be recycled over and over again.
0:13:12 > 0:13:13MOO!
0:13:17 > 0:13:21Storm and I have had a great time on the farm today.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23If you want to have fun with your own farm,
0:13:23 > 0:13:27go to the CBeebies website to play the Down On The Farm game.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30See you next time. Bye!
