0:00:30 > 0:00:34Hello! I'm JB and welcome to Down On The Farm. Summer is here.
0:00:34 > 0:00:39Farmers are busy outside making use of the warmer days
0:00:39 > 0:00:41and there's lots of work to do.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43So while I help out on this farm,
0:00:43 > 0:00:46why don't you find out what Storm is up to?
0:00:56 > 0:01:02In Summer, I love to be outside eating fresh, crisp salad.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05Now, you can have it in a sandwich, or with your dinner,
0:01:05 > 0:01:10but my favourite way to have it is in a big bowl, all to myself.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16At this farm in East Lothian, they grow lots of leafy vegetables that
0:01:16 > 0:01:21are used in salad and Farmer Martin has asked if I can help today.
0:01:25 > 0:01:26- Hi, Martin!- Hi, Storm!
0:01:26 > 0:01:29Welcome to the farm. We've got a busy day ahead.
0:01:29 > 0:01:32We're making 300 bags of salad.
0:01:32 > 0:01:33300 bags of salad?!
0:01:33 > 0:01:38- That's right. Would you like to help?- I'd love to.- Let's go!
0:01:41 > 0:01:46So, these are the vegetables that we're going to be picking today.
0:01:46 > 0:01:47That's right, Storm.
0:01:47 > 0:01:51These are Mizuna leaves and they were only planted a few weeks ago
0:01:51 > 0:01:54- but they're ready to be harvested now.- A few weeks ago?
0:01:54 > 0:01:55- So they grow quick.- They do.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57There are lots of leaves to pick,
0:01:57 > 0:02:01so James, Saul, Bryony and Hero have come to help us.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04Well, these ones look really tall, don't they?
0:02:04 > 0:02:06Shall we harvest some of them?
0:02:07 > 0:02:09That's a big bunch.
0:02:09 > 0:02:11Grab this little clump here. That's it.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14I'll slice it off...carefully.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16- There we go.- I've got a big bunch.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22A dainty wee bunch for you. Here we go.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31Now we need to put all the leaves into bags to make salads.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37We mix the Mizuna with lots of other leafy vegetables.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40Have you got some pak choi for me? In it goes.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42Wow. Excellent.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47They look great, don't they?
0:02:47 > 0:02:48That'll be a good salad.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51All bagged up and ready to go.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56Now it's off to the packing shed to put our salads into boxes with
0:02:56 > 0:02:59lots of other fruit and vegetables.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03When the boxes are ready, they are handed over to the delivery men,
0:03:03 > 0:03:08who take them in their vans, straight to the customers' houses.
0:03:09 > 0:03:13I didn't realise how much work went into preparing salad.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15There is a lot and we do it every day.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19You've worked really hard, so here's a couple for you to take away.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23Thank you very much. Now, while we relax after a busy day,
0:03:23 > 0:03:26why don't you find out more about what bees do in summer?
0:03:26 > 0:03:30Summer is a very busy time for bees.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34They visit lots of summer flowers to drink nectar,
0:03:34 > 0:03:37a sugary liquid made by the flowers.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40This gives the bees the energy they need to fly back
0:03:40 > 0:03:42and forth to their nest or hive.
0:03:44 > 0:03:48Honey bees also collect nectar to make honey.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52They store their honey in honeycombs to eat in winter.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56Pollen is a powder made by flowers.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58It is often yellow or orange.
0:04:00 > 0:04:04Many bees gather pollen to eat or to feed to baby bees.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06It is very good for them.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10This honey bee has collected yellow pollen
0:04:10 > 0:04:12in special hairs on its back legs.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15These are called pollen baskets.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18By filling their pollen baskets, many honey bees
0:04:18 > 0:04:22and bumble bees can gather lots of pollen in one trip,
0:04:22 > 0:04:24saving time and energy.
0:04:25 > 0:04:30Back at home, they carefully store the precious pollen for later.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40- In the summer... - It's fun to look for insects.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43We're making a bug hotel.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45- ALL:- Let's go!
0:04:48 > 0:04:52A bug hotel is something you can build with different
0:04:52 > 0:04:54materials that lots of insects like.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Now everybody, where are we going to put this hotel today?
0:04:59 > 0:05:01Can we put it down by the pond?
0:05:01 > 0:05:03Why down at the pond?
0:05:03 > 0:05:06Because that's where all the minibeasts are.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09And why do we need to build it on the flat ground?
0:05:09 > 0:05:11So it doesn't tip over.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18Just like a hotel for people, a bug hotel has walls
0:05:18 > 0:05:20and different floors.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23This one is made out of recycled wooden pallets
0:05:23 > 0:05:25but you could make one in a shoebox.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29Now the walls are ready,
0:05:29 > 0:05:32we need to collect things to fill the hotel with.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38Bees like plant pots.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40We need to collect lots.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44- BOTH:- We're collecting sticks.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50We're rolling up cardboard for bugs to hide in.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55Great job, everybody.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58We've collected lots of nice things for the minibeasts.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01Now all we need to do is put them into the hotel.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06There are sticks for the spiders and ants...
0:06:07 > 0:06:10..tubes for centipedes to hide in...
0:06:10 > 0:06:14straw that ladybirds like because it's nice and dry...
0:06:14 > 0:06:18and plant pots and flowers for the bees.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Got it in? Well done.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24Oh, the bees are going to have a good home there.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27- ALL:- Finished!
0:06:29 > 0:06:33Now we've finished the hotel, what can we do now?
0:06:33 > 0:06:35- ALL:- Look for bugs!
0:06:46 > 0:06:50That's so big. Whoa!
0:06:50 > 0:06:53While we look out for insects visiting our bug hotel,
0:06:53 > 0:06:57you can enjoy our poem about flying high.
0:07:02 > 0:07:06High in a summer sky, I see birds fly by
0:07:06 > 0:07:10As they dart and loop, hover and swoop
0:07:11 > 0:07:13I wish I could do that
0:07:16 > 0:07:20High in a summer sky, bright kites catch my eye
0:07:20 > 0:07:25As they sway in the wind, dip and rise up again
0:07:25 > 0:07:27I wish I could do that
0:07:28 > 0:07:33High in a summer sky, soaring planes pass by
0:07:33 > 0:07:37As they paint the sky white, I smile with delight
0:07:37 > 0:07:39I wish I could do that.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48I've come to a farm in Herefordshire,
0:07:48 > 0:07:51which has a special name. It's called a stud farm.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55Can you guess what animals they have here?
0:07:55 > 0:07:56HORSE NEIGHS
0:07:56 > 0:07:58That's right, horses!
0:08:01 > 0:08:04- Hi, Farmer Anne!- Hello! - What is a stud farm?
0:08:04 > 0:08:06A stud farm is where we breed horses.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09The foals go from us and they go all over the world.
0:08:09 > 0:08:13Well, it sounds like a busy place. Can I help out today?
0:08:13 > 0:08:16Yes, I've got two helpers back in the yard.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19- Let's go and join them. - Fantastic. Let's go.
0:08:26 > 0:08:32- Hi, Ella. Hi, Evie. BOTH:- Hi, JB. - So, what can I do to help?
0:08:32 > 0:08:34We need to feed the stallions.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36And what's a stallion, Anne?
0:08:36 > 0:08:39A stallion is a male horse that can father foals.
0:08:39 > 0:08:41Oh, so they're the dads!
0:08:41 > 0:08:45- Yes, that's right. - And so what do we feed them?
0:08:45 > 0:08:47- They eat sugar beets.- And nuts.
0:08:47 > 0:08:49Cool. Well, let's get feeding.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52Sugar beet gives the horses energy.
0:08:52 > 0:08:53There we go.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59The horse nuts have lots of bits to keep them healthy.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02So we've got our sugar beets and our nuts.
0:09:02 > 0:09:04I think it's time to get mixing, isn't it?
0:09:06 > 0:09:09- How does it feel, girls? - It feels squishy.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15Now that that's all mixed up, it's time to feed the horses.
0:09:15 > 0:09:16Come on, then.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20I think he likes it.
0:09:23 > 0:09:28Now that's the boys sorted, it's time to see the girls.
0:09:28 > 0:09:33- So do the mums have a special name too?- Yes, the mums are called mares.
0:09:33 > 0:09:37- And the babies are called foals. - Well, the foals are REALLY cute.
0:09:37 > 0:09:41Now we need to go into the field to check the mares
0:09:41 > 0:09:42and foals are nice and healthy.
0:09:42 > 0:09:46We are safe to do this because Farmer Anne is an expert,
0:09:46 > 0:09:48but you should always ask an adult
0:09:48 > 0:09:51before going into a field with animals.
0:09:52 > 0:09:53So who do we have here?
0:09:54 > 0:09:56This is Melody.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58And this is Stormy.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01- And how old is Stormy? - She's two months old.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04She was born in the spring and she grows up in the nice summer
0:10:04 > 0:10:08weather, and she'll have this lovely lush green grass to eat.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11And how do we know if they're healthy?
0:10:11 > 0:10:13She should have a very shiny coat.
0:10:13 > 0:10:15And nice bright eyes.
0:10:15 > 0:10:19Well, they look nice and healthy to me.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22The other horses are looking healthy too.
0:10:23 > 0:10:27The last job of the day is to exercise the show ponies.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30They take part in competitions,
0:10:30 > 0:10:34so they need to practise to keep the ponies and riders in top shape.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Well done, Ella.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46While we go back to the stables,
0:10:46 > 0:10:50why don't you find out about being outdoors in the summer?
0:10:53 > 0:10:57It's fun to play outside in the garden or park in summer.
0:10:57 > 0:11:02When running around, you'll see lots of plants and flowers.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05But these plants are stinging nettles
0:11:05 > 0:11:09and, if touched, can give you an itchy rash, which hurts.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12If you get stung by a nettle, look for a leaf like this,
0:11:12 > 0:11:14called a dock leaf,
0:11:14 > 0:11:19and rub it or keep it cool, but try not to scratch the rash.
0:11:19 > 0:11:21Enjoy being out and about!
0:11:27 > 0:11:30On warm summer days, it's fun to eat outside.
0:11:31 > 0:11:36Daniel and Holly are getting ready to make some beefburgers with Becky.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38It's time to measure the ingredients.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40We need to put in flour.
0:11:40 > 0:11:44We check it's the right amount with these scales.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46Now we need to add some onions.
