0:00:46 > 0:00:49Hello, I'm Chloe!

0:00:49 > 0:00:53And this is my dog called Willow.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57She's a King Charles spaniel.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00And she is so cute!

0:01:03 > 0:01:05We play lots and lots.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08I blow bubbles and she chases them.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13I love giving Willow cuddles.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21DING-DONG

0:01:23 > 0:01:25- Hi, Chloe!- Hi, Ferne

0:01:25 > 0:01:29- You must be Georgie. Hello! - Hi, Ferne.- Hi, Willow!

0:01:29 > 0:01:32She's beautiful.

0:01:32 > 0:01:33Would you like to come in?

0:01:33 > 0:01:34I'd love to!

0:01:39 > 0:01:42She's so lovely, look at this belly!

0:01:42 > 0:01:43How old is Willow?

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Six and a half.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48- So she's older than you are!- Mm.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Is Willow like a furry big sister?

0:01:50 > 0:01:51Yeah!

0:01:51 > 0:01:55I heard you do something really special with Willow, don't you?

0:01:55 > 0:01:58- Yeah, she goes to the doggy dentist. - That is amazing!

0:01:58 > 0:02:01You take her to the vet's to get her teeth cleaned!

0:02:01 > 0:02:04- Georgie, why do you take her to the vet's?- As she gets older,

0:02:04 > 0:02:08her teeth get harder to look after and really dirty,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10- so the vets keep on top of it.- Perfect!

0:02:10 > 0:02:12So between Willow to the doggy dentist,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16- how else do you look after her teeth?- Come on, I'll show you.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Come on, Willow!

0:02:18 > 0:02:19Come on!

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Oh, what's in here?

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Doggy toothbrush, and doggy toothpaste.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Wow! And this is her special toothbrush?

0:02:30 > 0:02:32- Yeah.- How do you use it?

0:02:32 > 0:02:38Well, we put the toothbrush on our finger, you put the toothpaste on,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40and then we just brush Willow's teeth.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44- But we don't need to brush her teeth today, do we?- No.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Cos we are going to the vet's.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50- Would you like to come, too? - I would love to!

0:02:50 > 0:02:51Shall we go? Come on!

0:02:56 > 0:02:57Meet the vet!

0:02:58 > 0:02:59This is Martin.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02He's been a vet for over 20 years!

0:03:04 > 0:03:08He once treated a lion with a sore tooth!

0:03:08 > 0:03:09And helped an elephant

0:03:09 > 0:03:12with an orange stuck in its throat.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Come on, Willow!

0:03:21 > 0:03:22Good girl.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- Right, Willow, do you want to come through?- Come on!

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Hi, Georgie, hi, Ferne.- Hi. - Hi, Chloe.- Hi.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- How are you?- Good.- Good!

0:03:34 > 0:03:35Thank you, Martin.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39- Shall we get Willow up on the table?- Sure.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Look at those teeth, Chloe!

0:03:42 > 0:03:44- Whoa!- I know!

0:03:44 > 0:03:45So, Martin, what's first?

0:03:45 > 0:03:49First thing we need to do is give her a good check over,

0:03:49 > 0:03:52to make sure her heart, lungs, and belly are all good,

0:03:52 > 0:03:56- and that there's no problems. Has she been well?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59- She like her food?- Yeah. - Yeah, she does!

0:03:59 > 0:04:02So we're going to have a little listen to her heart. OK?

0:04:02 > 0:04:05- Oh, this'll be nice. Do you want to listen?- Yeah?

0:04:05 > 0:04:08- Can you hear it?- Here we go. Pop those in your ears.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10- Tell me, what can you hear? - SLOW BUMPING

0:04:10 > 0:04:14- Like, bump, bump, bump... - That's right.- Bump, bump...

0:04:14 > 0:04:15Do you think it sounds good?

0:04:15 > 0:04:17- Yeah.- Yeah, good.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19Also, when I listen to her heart,

0:04:19 > 0:04:23I also listen to her breathing, to her lungs, so her lungs are good.

0:04:23 > 0:04:24What next, before her teeth?

0:04:24 > 0:04:28We'll give her a little medicine to make her a bit sleepy.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30That medicine's called anaesthetic.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34- But we don't go to sleep when our teeth are going to get cleaned.- No.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36So why is she?

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Because she won't sit still nicely for me,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41so we're going to make her just a little bit sleepy

0:04:41 > 0:04:44and then I can clean all the way round her teeth.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47When you go to the dentist, you lie there and go "ahh".

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Do you think Willow would do that?

0:04:49 > 0:04:52No! She would be like...

0:04:52 > 0:04:53Yeah, that's right.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57So if she's a bit sleepy, I can open her mouth and I can do it. OK.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Sounds good, doesn't it?

0:04:59 > 0:05:00Shall I keep Willow company

0:05:00 > 0:05:04- while she gets her anaesthetic and her teeth cleaned?- Yeah.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07- That would be lovely. - See you later, Willow.

0:05:10 > 0:05:11Let me explain.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Anaesthetics are a group of medicines

0:05:15 > 0:05:19that make animals comfortable for operations, procedures or tests.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Some anaesthetic will numb an area of the body,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25so the patient doesn't feel what's happening.

0:05:25 > 0:05:30And sometimes it makes the patient fall into a really deep sleep.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32BOING! BOING! BOING!

0:05:36 > 0:05:38While Chloe and her mum wait outside,

0:05:38 > 0:05:41vet Martin gets Willow ready for her anaesthetic.

0:05:42 > 0:05:43Come on, Willow.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45OK, sweetheart, little scratch.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47That's all.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Well done, Willow.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51OK?

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Willow gets a small injection of liquid anaesthetic first.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58And she's being the perfect patient.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Next, Willow gets more anaesthetic as a gas

0:06:01 > 0:06:03through a tube in her mouth.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Willow can't feel any pain at all.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08She's fast asleep.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14There we go, Willow. Things are going well.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19And now, vet Martin is able to start having a good look at her teeth,

0:06:19 > 0:06:21and then he can start cleaning them.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27This is suction, just like we get in the dentists.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Wow, you can see a difference already!

0:06:33 > 0:06:37Are you just getting rid of all of the plaque and the build-up?

0:06:37 > 0:06:39- Yes, you can see it coming off.- Yes!

0:06:39 > 0:06:42- Pearly white teeth in a minute.- Yes!

0:06:42 > 0:06:47Are her teeth good for a six-and- a-half-year-old King Charles?

0:06:47 > 0:06:51They are good, but they're good because she comes in once a year

0:06:51 > 0:06:53and has a good clean up. And then I polish them.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56So polishing teeth kind of smooths them over,

0:06:56 > 0:07:00- kind of puts a protective layer over them as well?- Kind of, yeah.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04So when they polish your teeth, it's not just to make you look good.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06It also has a proper function.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10Brushing at home is really important for dogs.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14- Should you brush your dog's teeth twice a day?- Once a day's fine.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17As long as you can do it four times a week that's...

0:07:17 > 0:07:19a good idea.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Martin cleans and polishes all the teeth in Willow's mouth.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27So, Martin, how did Willow do?

0:07:27 > 0:07:30She did great. She's had enough anaesthetic,

0:07:30 > 0:07:34- that should feel quite comfortable when she wakes up.- OK.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37- So shall we leave her to wake up? - Yes.- There we are!

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- Hey, Willow.- Hi, Willow.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Oh, hello! Coming to say hello.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49- How are you feeling? - She did so well, didn't she?

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Oh, she did really, really well.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55She's a little bit sleepy still,

0:07:55 > 0:07:58so if we just give her a little longer, she should be great.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Perfect. How about while Willow wakes up,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04we see what else has been happening at the vet's today?

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Willow isn't the only dog at the vet's today.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15I'm Karen, and you're Eva,

0:08:15 > 0:08:19and this is Brian. He's 18 months old.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23He's at the vets today because he cut himself on wire,

0:08:23 > 0:08:26and he's had his stitches in his leg,

0:08:26 > 0:08:29so he's come to have them looked at today.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33And Lizzie the cat has been brought in by her owner, Sharon.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40Martin gives Lizzie a full check over, and her vaccinations.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44It's been a busy day for Martin and his team.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50Look who we have!

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Willow! Willow!

0:08:53 > 0:08:56Still a little bit sleepy, but hi!

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Good girl.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Thank you, Martin.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04- Thank you very much, Martin. - No problem.- Bye!- Cheers, bye!

0:09:04 > 0:09:07Chloe and Georgie, I've had such a wonderful time meeting you,

0:09:07 > 0:09:11and Willow did so well in her procedure, it was great to see.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15But I'd love to come and visit when she's back to her bouncing self,

0:09:15 > 0:09:18- would that be OK?- Yes. - Thank you very much.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Let's see what Rory's been up to today.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Vet's go!

0:09:28 > 0:09:29TOOT-TOOT!

0:09:29 > 0:09:32This zoo has lots of different animals.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37They all receive care and attention from a team of resident vets,

0:09:37 > 0:09:40and I'm going to meet one of them now.

0:09:41 > 0:09:42This way.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- Hi, Charlotte, hi, Kelly. - Hi, Rory.- Hi, Rory.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50Today, you guys are going to be doing a check-up

0:09:50 > 0:09:52- on a royal resident.- That's right,

0:09:52 > 0:09:56today we're doing a check-up on Taylor. Taylor is a royal python.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Wow! That looks a look like a pillowcase to me.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Yes, Taylor's travelling in a pillowcase today,

0:10:02 > 0:10:04- to make sure she doesn't get damaged.- OK.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07- So here she is.- She is beautiful!

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Royal pythons are also known as ball pythons,

0:10:10 > 0:10:13and they are found in parts of Africa.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16They're called royal pythons because it's thought

0:10:16 > 0:10:20that African kings used to wear them as giant, living necklaces,

0:10:20 > 0:10:22a long time ago. Can you imagine that?

0:10:22 > 0:10:26So first of all we're going to check that she's moving around OK,

0:10:26 > 0:10:28and that she is nice and strong.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32So when I hold her, I can feel her coils are nice and strong

0:10:32 > 0:10:36- and she's nice and muscular. She's moving forward nicely.- Yeah.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38- Next, we check her body condition.- OK.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41We want to make sure she's not too fat or too thin

0:10:41 > 0:10:44and you do that by running your fingers along the muscles

0:10:44 > 0:10:48either side of the spine. She seems in good condition to me.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50She looks absolutely gorgeous.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54- Next, I want to look in her mouth. - How do you do that with a snake?!

0:10:54 > 0:10:58I'm just going to gently open her mouth with this wooden stick.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02- So you can see in there it's a nice pale pink colour.- Very pale pink.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04So that all looks healthy to me.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08And you can see that she's flicking her tongue in and out.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10- Tasting the air.- Yes, that's right.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13So you and I see the world with our eyes,

0:11:13 > 0:11:16and we use our other senses like smell and hearing as well,

0:11:16 > 0:11:20and snakes are similar, but they smell with their tongue as well.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24- Next thing I'm going to do is get a heart rate.- Oh, wow!

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- The heart in snakes is about a third of the way down.- OK.

0:11:27 > 0:11:28MACHINE CRACKLES

0:11:28 > 0:11:30BUMP-BUMP

0:11:31 > 0:11:32BUMP-BUMP

0:11:34 > 0:11:38- That's incredibly slow! So is that quite normal?- Yeah.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Snakes and other reptiles do have very slow heart rates.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45We'll pop her back in her pillowcase and take her to the X-ray machine.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49OK. An X-ray is like a photograph of the inside of your body.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- So we'll see her skeleton? - That's right.

0:11:51 > 0:11:56- We'll see her skeleton and maybe some of her organs as well.- Amazing.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Charlotte and Kelly stand behind the screen to take the X-ray,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02and moments later, I get to see the results.

0:12:02 > 0:12:03Wow!

0:12:03 > 0:12:06So on here you can see Taylor's skull,

0:12:06 > 0:12:09and then the spine, with all the ribs coming off...

0:12:09 > 0:12:11- All the way down. - ..all the way down.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15- Amazing, aren't they, snakes? - Absolutely incredible creatures.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19Well, she has been really brave. Is there anything else?

0:12:19 > 0:12:21No, that's her check-up complete.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24- She's done really well. - Yes, you've been marvellous.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Thank you very much for letting us come and see it all!

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Not long ago I met Chloe, her mum Georgie,

0:12:34 > 0:12:38and their lovely dog Willow, who had to get her teeth cleaned.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41And now I'm back to see how they're getting on back home.

0:12:44 > 0:12:49- Hi, Chloe, hi, Georgie.- Hi, Ferne! - Hi, Ferne!- Hi! Hello, Willow!

0:12:49 > 0:12:52- Oh, she looks great! How's she getting on, Chloe?- Good.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56- Does she still have her nice, white, shiny teeth?- Sparkly clean.

0:12:56 > 0:13:01- Perfect! And has she been playing lots?- She's been playing loads.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05Good girl, Willow. She's been so good. Shall we play with her now?

0:13:05 > 0:13:07- Yeah!- That would be fun. Come on!

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Come on!

0:13:11 > 0:13:13GIGGLING

0:13:16 > 0:13:18So fast!

0:13:18 > 0:13:22- I think Willow wants to play with some bubbles.- Yes!

0:13:26 > 0:13:28LAUGHTER

0:13:28 > 0:13:29Go, go, go!

0:13:29 > 0:13:32LAUGHTER
