0:00:02 > 0:00:06Hiya. I'm Ferne. I'm in Manchester, in England, to go to a school that
0:00:06 > 0:00:09has gorgeous guinea pigs, and they're getting a visit
0:00:09 > 0:00:12from the vet. This is going to be great.
0:00:12 > 0:00:15And I'm Rory. I'm here at a safari park in Stirling, in Scotland,
0:00:15 > 0:00:19to see how the vet here cares for the birds of prey.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26# Ferne and Rory, telling you the story
0:00:26 > 0:00:28# Of some poorly pets
0:00:28 > 0:00:31# We will take them, show you how to make them
0:00:31 > 0:00:33# Better at the vet's
0:00:33 > 0:00:35# Vet Tales!
0:00:35 > 0:00:38# These are our Vet Tales!
0:00:38 > 0:00:40# Vet Tales!
0:00:40 > 0:00:42# Ferne and Rory's Vet Tales! #
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Hi, I'm Lily.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49Hi, I'm Amelia.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54Our class has two guinea pigs.
0:00:55 > 0:00:59They're called Angelina and Raphael.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01We look after them.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05They're so cute.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09We love them very much.
0:01:14 > 0:01:20# Everybody do this, do this, do this
0:01:20 > 0:01:25# Everybody do this left, right, great. #
0:01:25 > 0:01:27Hello, everybody.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30- ALL:- Hi, Ferne.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32That was such a fantastic song. I loved it.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35- Hi, Miss Smith.- Hi, Ferne. Would you like to meet
0:01:35 > 0:01:39- our class guinea pigs?- Yes, please, that would be awesome.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43- Where are they?- We'll show you. - You'll show me? Thank you.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46- See you soon.- Bye. - Bye. Bye-bye.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55Look at these gorgeous guinea pigs.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58You girls are so lucky to have them in your classroom.
0:01:58 > 0:02:02- Do you like having guinea pigs? - Yeah.- Yeah.- Which one is Raphael?
0:02:02 > 0:02:04The one with the hair fringe.
0:02:04 > 0:02:07He's got lots of hair. Angelina's the smooth one, and
0:02:07 > 0:02:10- Raphael's the really big, fluffy one?- Mm-hm.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12They are absolutely gorgeous.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14Guinea pigs are part of the rodent family,
0:02:14 > 0:02:18like mice and rats, and they are some of my favourite animals.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22- Shall we get one out for a cuddle? - Come on out now.- Go.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25There we go. Hello. GUINEA PIG SQUEAKS
0:02:25 > 0:02:28- Would you like to hold her?- Ah. - And I'll just close the cage.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31- Well done.- Nice girl.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34Wow, she is fantastic, isn't she?
0:02:34 > 0:02:36Look how friendly she is.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40What is your favourite thing to do when you look after the guinea pigs?
0:02:40 > 0:02:43- I love holding them. - I love feeding them.- Yeah.
0:02:43 > 0:02:47Do you like feeding them? They love chewing on things, don't they?
0:02:47 > 0:02:50Is that guinea pigs chatting to you?
0:02:50 > 0:02:54- Can I hold Angelina?- Yeah. - Well, they are looking fantastic,
0:02:54 > 0:02:57but I hear that sometimes someone has to come and visit them.
0:02:57 > 0:03:01- Who's that?- Vet Kate's coming. - Did you hear that, Angelina?
0:03:01 > 0:03:04Vet Kate's coming to see if you're OK. Fantastic.
0:03:04 > 0:03:05GUINEA PIG SQUEAKS
0:03:09 > 0:03:11This is vet Kate.
0:03:11 > 0:03:12She knew she wanted to be a vet
0:03:12 > 0:03:14when she was five years old.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18She has once helped a very large swan.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21And when she treats ferrets,
0:03:21 > 0:03:23she finds them really smelly.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34- Morning, guys.- Hi, Kate. - Hi, Kate.- Hi.- It's really special
0:03:34 > 0:03:38that you get to come to the school to check out the guinea pigs.
0:03:38 > 0:03:42- It's fantastic.- Oh, thank you for having me. It's really cool
0:03:42 > 0:03:46- cos I can show you what I do.- Which guinea pigs should we start with?
0:03:46 > 0:03:49- Angelina.- Angelina.- Good idea. - Fantastic. Oh, look at her.
0:03:49 > 0:03:54- Where do you need to start?- We're going to use this special torch
0:03:54 > 0:03:57- to look into her eyes there. - Why do you use the torch?
0:03:57 > 0:04:01So I can see right to the back of her eyes and make sure that she can
0:04:01 > 0:04:05see me, and I'm looking to make sure there's no signs of infection,
0:04:05 > 0:04:09so sometimes they get like snotty discharge and crusty bits,
0:04:09 > 0:04:12and soreness, so we can see that when we've a look.
0:04:12 > 0:04:16Her eyes are really clear, so now we look the nose for snot, to make sure
0:04:16 > 0:04:19that that's nice and clean. Have a look at those big teeth.
0:04:19 > 0:04:23Wow. Can you see those teeth? They are massive.
0:04:23 > 0:04:27Wow. Rodents' teeth never stop growing, so that's why
0:04:27 > 0:04:30they need lots of things in their cage that they can gnaw on.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34- So, Angelina's teeth are looking good.- Really, really good.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37Ears, OK. Again, we're looking for infection of sinus.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41Next up, we're going to use this. Do you know what this is called?
0:04:41 > 0:04:45- A stethoscope.- That's right. This is a stethoscope.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48And I use this to listen to her heart and her lungs.
0:04:48 > 0:04:49HEART BEATS
0:04:49 > 0:04:53Guinea pigs have fast hard rates because they're little, but she's
0:04:53 > 0:04:55nice and relaxed, and that's cool.
0:04:55 > 0:04:59Would you like to have a listen as well? Hear her heart there.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02- What does it sound like, Lily? - SHE TAPS RHYTHMICALLY
0:05:02 > 0:05:05- It's really fast, isn't it? - I heard that.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08Can you hear that? Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick...
0:05:08 > 0:05:12How do you think her heart sounds, Emilia? Is it a healthy heart?
0:05:12 > 0:05:15- Yeah.- I think it's a healthy heart as well.- Well done.
0:05:15 > 0:05:19So then, the next job on the list is to feel her tummy.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21What do you feel for in her tummy?
0:05:21 > 0:05:23So, we're making sure she's comfortable,
0:05:23 > 0:05:27and we're making sure that she hasn't got any food stuck.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30- She's got quite a chubby tummy, doesn't she?- She does yes,
0:05:30 > 0:05:33but guinea pigs often do, so it's fine.
0:05:33 > 0:05:37And actually, although she's got a bit of extra, she's not too bad.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40- So she can have treats?- I think so. The next thing we've to do,
0:05:40 > 0:05:45and she may not like us doing this, but we've to flip over and just have
0:05:45 > 0:05:48a very quick look at her tum-tum. We're checking to make
0:05:48 > 0:05:50sure she's clean, so that's perfect.
0:05:50 > 0:05:54Angelina is looking great, and now it's Raphael's turn.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56She gets the same check over from Vet Kate.
0:05:56 > 0:05:58Eyes.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00Nose.
0:06:00 > 0:06:01Teeth.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03Ears.
0:06:03 > 0:06:04Heart and lungs.
0:06:06 > 0:06:07And tummy.
0:06:07 > 0:06:09Is Raphael as chubby as Angelina?
0:06:09 > 0:06:12She isn't as chubby, no. She's a nice weight.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15She's got lots more fluff, hasn't she?
0:06:15 > 0:06:16- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19That's why I love Raphael's fringe.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22Yeah, I love Raphael's fringe, too.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25She's got a tiny little bit of matted fur there, so we ought to
0:06:25 > 0:06:29just help her out with that, and I think she could do with a claw clip,
0:06:29 > 0:06:33but other than that, ten out of ten on the health front.
0:06:33 > 0:06:34- Ten out of ten.- Yay!
0:06:34 > 0:06:36SHE LAUGHS
0:06:36 > 0:06:38Let me explain.
0:06:38 > 0:06:40Guinea pigs' nails grow just like ours.
0:06:40 > 0:06:45So, without regular trimming, it could lead to them overgrowing and
0:06:45 > 0:06:49curling into their foot pads, which could be very sore for them.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53Each nail has a blood vessel, known as the quick, which is pink or red
0:06:53 > 0:06:58in colour. So it's important to let your vet or someone experienced trim
0:06:58 > 0:07:02your guinea pig's nails so they are always cut in the correct place.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08- Right, so it's nail clipping time. - Absolutely.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11So we're just going to take the very end off there, look.
0:07:11 > 0:07:14See, she's not bothered one tiny bit.
0:07:14 > 0:07:18So this isn't hurting Raphael at all. It's just like us
0:07:18 > 0:07:21- getting our own nails clipped. - Good girl, Raphael.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24You can see this one here, girls, is actually quite curly.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29- Good girl. Good job, team. Excellent.- Well done.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32So her feet are looking a lot better,
0:07:32 > 0:07:35but there's one more thing Raphael that needs, isn't there?
0:07:35 > 0:07:39Yeah. She has got a little bit of a hair disaster going on.
0:07:39 > 0:07:43Matting like this can be prevented by brushing long haired guinea pigs
0:07:43 > 0:07:47every day, but today Kate is going to give Raphael a bit of a trim.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51So this is to make sure she doesn't get any poo or wee stuck in here.
0:07:51 > 0:07:54- It doesn't hurt at all. - She's making loads of noise,
0:07:54 > 0:07:56but that's cos she's a guinea pig.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59This is just like us getting our own hair cut.
0:07:59 > 0:08:03- I'm just going to take that little one off as well.- Fantastic.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06- Good girl.- Raphael, that's all we were doing.
0:08:06 > 0:08:07Good job, Raphael.
0:08:07 > 0:08:12- Kate, how are the class guinea pigs doing?- I'm really pleased with them.
0:08:12 > 0:08:16While we take these guinea pigs for some much needed play time,
0:08:16 > 0:08:19let's see what else has been happening at Kate's vets.
0:08:26 > 0:08:30Back at the vet practise, Vet Kate and her team had a busy day.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35Betty the Jack Russell terrier was here for a check-up.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39George and Alfie the West Highland terriers were in
0:08:39 > 0:08:42to have their teeth cleaned.
0:08:42 > 0:08:46And Charlie the black cockapoo was in for some tests.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49He had some blood samples taken before being reunited
0:08:49 > 0:08:50with his owner, Ned.
0:08:55 > 0:08:57Lily and Amelia,
0:08:57 > 0:09:01I've had a wonderful time meeting you two and your gorgeous classroom
0:09:01 > 0:09:05guinea pigs, Angelina and Raphael. I'd love to come back and see
0:09:05 > 0:09:09- how they're getting on. Would that be all right?- Yeah.- Yes.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12Thank you very much. I wonder what Rory's been up to today.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19HORN HONKS
0:09:20 > 0:09:22This safari park near Stirling
0:09:22 > 0:09:25is home to some fantastic birds of prey.
0:09:28 > 0:09:32Today I'm with head vet Paddy, as he checks up on some of these
0:09:32 > 0:09:34magnificent animals.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36BIRD SQUAWKS
0:09:37 > 0:09:41- Rory, this is Dominic, our keeper. - Good to meet you.- How's it going?
0:09:41 > 0:09:43- And who is this?- This is Willow.
0:09:43 > 0:09:47- She's a six-year-old female lanner falcon.- She is an absolute beauty.
0:09:47 > 0:09:51Lanner falcons are found in Africa and Asia parts of Europe,
0:09:51 > 0:09:55and they're among the fastest birds in the world. What are we going to
0:09:55 > 0:09:59- be doing for this lovely lady today? - We're going to cope her beak so the
0:09:59 > 0:10:03beak carries on growing, it's just like your fingertips and
0:10:03 > 0:10:07- as that grows, it needs filing down. - Okey doke. So as you say,
0:10:07 > 0:10:11birds' beaks keep on growing and in the wild they'd have rocks and trees
0:10:11 > 0:10:15to rub their beak against and wear it down. What have we got to do?
0:10:15 > 0:10:19We're going to put a hood on her so she believes it's night-time,
0:10:19 > 0:10:23- calm so she doesn't get bothered. - Great.- Dave's going to come across,
0:10:23 > 0:10:27- He's made sure she's restrained. - You're holding the wings tight,
0:10:27 > 0:10:31- so they don't jump out.- And I hold the head, keep the bottom part
0:10:31 > 0:10:34of the beak closed and just file away.
0:10:34 > 0:10:38This doesn't hurt the bird. It's like getting your fingernails done.
0:10:38 > 0:10:42Paddy, how often would have to do this kind of thing on a falcon?
0:10:42 > 0:10:45So it depends on what they're being fed, activity levels, so
0:10:45 > 0:10:49there's no hard and fast rule about when you need to do it.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53Just need to keep an eye on them. And Willow seems really calm.
0:10:53 > 0:10:55- Is that your all good, Dom? - That's it, yeah.
0:10:55 > 0:10:59So just like in the wild, a nice little extra bit on the end there.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02- Paddy, are you quite happy? - Absolutely.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06Nicely shapen, so that should do her fine. We're going to go have a look
0:11:06 > 0:11:10at a hooded vulture, to have a look at the feet and talons.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13Dom, you've got Kevin in your hands here. What's going on?
0:11:13 > 0:11:17Kevin has got a small crack in one of his pads just under his toe.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20And what are you going to be looking for here, Paddy?
0:11:20 > 0:11:23I want to see the crack is getting smaller and there's no
0:11:23 > 0:11:28swelling or infection around the area. We're going to look underneath
0:11:28 > 0:11:32and pull his talons out. Just to see. This cut is just on this toe.
0:11:32 > 0:11:33Just on the inside there.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37A couple of weeks ago, that was a little bit red and raw and that's
0:11:37 > 0:11:41- now healing up quite nicely.- Great. So who are we going to look at next?
0:11:41 > 0:11:45We're going to see the barn owl who has got a problem with his foot.
0:11:45 > 0:11:49- So who have we got in here then? - We have Nemo. He's our barn owl.
0:11:49 > 0:11:53- We're going to look at his foot. - Hello, Nemo.- I'm just going to put
0:11:53 > 0:11:57- him in a cloth to keep him nice and calm.- What are we checking for?
0:11:57 > 0:12:01Nemo had a problem with one of the talons and unfortunately it
0:12:01 > 0:12:04got really badly infected and the talon dropped off.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08We're just really checking to make sure that Nemo is comfortable and
0:12:08 > 0:12:12that there is no swelling on the foot or any signs of any scabs
0:12:12 > 0:12:16- or problems that, and everything is looking lovely.- And he's not going
0:12:16 > 0:12:20- to suffer too much from lose that talon there?- No. If it was a back
0:12:20 > 0:12:24talon like this one here then he might have a few issues perching,
0:12:24 > 0:12:28but at the moment, he's got the other two, which will act fine,
0:12:28 > 0:12:30so he shouldn't have any problems.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34I have had an amazing time seeing all these birds of prey.
0:12:34 > 0:12:38- I think they're awesome. Thank you. - No problem.- You're welcome.
0:12:41 > 0:12:46Not long ago, I met Amelia, Lily and their class's pet guinea pigs,
0:12:46 > 0:12:50Angelina and Raphael, and I'm back to see how they're getting on after
0:12:50 > 0:12:51their visit from the vet.
0:12:57 > 0:12:59- Hi, Ferne.- Hi, Ferne.
0:12:59 > 0:13:00Hi, girls.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02- How are you?- Good.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05And how are these gorgeous guinea pigs doing?
0:13:05 > 0:13:08They're looking really good.
0:13:08 > 0:13:09They are so good.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11They are looking wonderful.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14How are they since they got their nails clipped?
0:13:14 > 0:13:17- They're good and it didn't hurt at all.- Great.
0:13:17 > 0:13:21Raphael was making lots of noise, but it didn't hurt and the hair
0:13:21 > 0:13:23- is looking good as well.- Yes.
0:13:23 > 0:13:25- I might have combed their hair.- Good.
0:13:25 > 0:13:29It looks like you've been taking fantastic care of these guinea pigs.
0:13:29 > 0:13:33Thank you for letting me come and visit you. Thank you for joining us
0:13:33 > 0:13:38and finding out all about these guinea pigs, Raphael and Angelina.
0:13:38 > 0:13:41See you next time for more of Ferne And Rory's Vet Tales.
0:13:41 > 0:13:43ALL: Bye!
