0:00:44 > 0:00:45Hi, I'm Millicent.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Hi, I'm Matilda.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50- BOTH:- And this is our pony, Smartie.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53We've had her since we were little.

0:00:54 > 0:01:00She's very gentle and we love brushing her chest and her coat.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02We look after her every day.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07She is our best friend and we love her.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22- Hi, Matilda, hi, Millicent. - Hi, Rory.- Hi, Rory.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24- And you must be Mum Emma, hello.- Hi.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28- Do you want to see our pony, Smartie?- I'd love to.- This way.

0:01:28 > 0:01:29- See you.- Bye!

0:01:40 > 0:01:41Oh, wow!

0:01:41 > 0:01:44- Hi, Smartie! Can I give her a pat? - Yeah.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Oh, she is gorgeous!

0:01:47 > 0:01:52So tell me, Millicent, she is not the youngest pony in the world?

0:01:52 > 0:01:54- How old is she?- 23 and a half.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57- She's older than both of you put together?- Yeah.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Given she's a bit older, is she in good health?

0:02:00 > 0:02:03- She's good for her age but she's got arthritis.- Poor Smartie.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07Arthritis can cause pain, stiffness and swelling in joints

0:02:07 > 0:02:09like knuckles and knees.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11It can affect animals and humans.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Medicine usually helps to reduce pain and swelling, though.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19It's also important that she gets regular checkups at the vet.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21- Isn't that right, Millicent?- Yeah.

0:02:21 > 0:02:26- We're taking Smartie for a checkup, do you want to come?- I'd love to.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Let's get ready, come on.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39This is vet Ben.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43He mainly looks after horses and ponies.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47Once Ben had to help a horse who got his head stuck in a tyre

0:02:47 > 0:02:52and vaccinated another horse who lived with dairy cows.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- Hi, Ben!- Hello!- Hello! - How are you getting on?- Good.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02What will you check with Smartie?

0:03:02 > 0:03:06The first thing is to ask these two how she's getting on.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09- She's been good. - OK when you've been riding her?

0:03:09 > 0:03:10Yes, tiny bit stiff.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13But otherwise OK and doing everything that

0:03:13 > 0:03:15- she and you want to do? - Yes.- That's grand.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19We'll look and see how she's got on last time, check her over and

0:03:19 > 0:03:23see her walking and trotting, see how she's moving.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27- Hello, Smartie. Is she getting her tablets OK?- Trying to avoid them.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30You've got a way of getting her to have her tablets?

0:03:30 > 0:03:33- We mix it in with her dinner. - That makes it OK?

0:03:33 > 0:03:34- Yes.- That's good.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37What are you feeling for down there?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Checking the joints. We're worried about stiffness.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44Sometimes if joints are under stress and a bit arthritic,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47they produce extra fluid to try and ease them.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51- Feeling it gives you a good idea. - Does that look swollen?

0:03:51 > 0:03:54- No, not too bad. She had the farrier out since last time?- Yes.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58So she's had her feet trimmed. They look nice and neat.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- What does the farrier do? - It cleans Smartie's feet.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05That's right! A farrier looks after a horse or pony's feet.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07What are you looking for in the back legs?

0:04:07 > 0:04:11Just to see. Last time, she was very sore when we bent her legs.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14We're checking and seeing those this time.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16- How's she feeling today? - OK today.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20How can you tell if she's sore? Will she resist you or kick back?

0:04:20 > 0:04:23She tries to resist or she's a bit uncomfortable, but

0:04:23 > 0:04:27that was as it was last time. We should look at her in the paddock.

0:04:27 > 0:04:32Let's get out to the paddock, then. Here we go. Come on, Smartie.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Arthritis is a medical condition that causes the swelling

0:04:38 > 0:04:40of joints like the knee.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44It can become painful and sore when trying to move the joint.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Medicine is sometimes used to help.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51Making sure your pet has a balance of rest and exercise

0:04:51 > 0:04:52is really important.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Whoa.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11So, could you lead her away for me in walk, have a turn and then

0:05:11 > 0:05:13have a few strides and trot back?

0:05:13 > 0:05:15- OK.- OK? Thank you.- OK.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17What are you watching for, Ben?

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Just assessing how she moves.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Because she's got some arthritis, we're checking to see

0:05:22 > 0:05:23how her stiffness is.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27We look for the length of stride and whether there's any

0:05:27 > 0:05:30unlevelness to show that she might be lame.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33But she's walking OK, a bit stiff behind, so I think some

0:05:33 > 0:05:36of her arthritis is still holding her back a bit

0:05:36 > 0:05:40and I think she could do with encouraging those back legs

0:05:40 > 0:05:42to bend and use themselves a bit more.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45What would you recommend to improve it?

0:05:45 > 0:05:47Nice, consistent riding by these two,

0:05:47 > 0:05:51regular exercise is good but something that might be useful

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- is hydrotherapy, a bit of swimming. - Great.

0:05:54 > 0:05:55- We can do that, can't we?- Yes.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Hydrotherapy is a bit of movement and exercise in water.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02- Shall we get Smartie ready for a dip in the pool?- Yes.

0:06:02 > 0:06:07While we do that, let's see who else Ben's been helping today.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15While vet Ben was at the stables, there were other horses that

0:06:15 > 0:06:17needed checks, too.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21Cam the grey gelding had his teeth checked to make sure they

0:06:21 > 0:06:22were clean and healthy.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27And Ben checked Mickey, a bay gelding, to make sure his

0:06:27 > 0:06:30eyes were clear and that he could see OK.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40It's time for Smartie to have some hydrotherapy.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45We've come to the special pool where horses and ponies get treatment.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48I can't wait to see how Smartie gets on.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55- Hi, Gail.- Hello, everybody. Welcome to the hydrotherapy pool.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Gail is the hydrotherapist.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Stuart and Becky are getting Smartie ready for her swim.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04I'll be looking to make sure that she's using all her legs evenly

0:07:04 > 0:07:08and correctly and that she's breathing properly,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12and the swimming process should help her mobility, her sore feet,

0:07:12 > 0:07:13and help her feel better.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Will it be painful for Smartie when she's in the water or will it be OK?

0:07:17 > 0:07:21Not at all. Hopefully she will enjoy the experience.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24- You, ready guys?- Yeah.- Yes. - Let's get ready.- See you later.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28- Is this going to be good, guys? - Yeah.- Yeah.- I think so, too.

0:07:28 > 0:07:29Off you go, Smartie.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32- There she goes, she's off! - She's away.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36SNORT!

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Oh.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40- It's impressive.- Well done.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44Good girl, Smartie.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Come on, Smartie, doing well!

0:07:51 > 0:07:54She's had two laps, she's going to go back in and go round

0:07:54 > 0:07:57the other way now, I think.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01- How do you think she's doing, guys? BOTH:- Really well.- Yeah?

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Come on, you're doing great.

0:08:05 > 0:08:06Look at her legs go.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11What's she doing with her head?

0:08:11 > 0:08:15- Keeping it up high so she can breathe properly.- Exactly.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17How does her breathing sound?

0:08:17 > 0:08:18SNORT! Excellent work!

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Well done, Smartie.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23SNORT! SNORT!

0:08:23 > 0:08:26She's heading out now, she looks quite tired.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29She's done so well, four laps in total.

0:08:29 > 0:08:34- I think this is going to be really good for her, don't you?- Yeah.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38After a nice rubdown, Smartie gets to go in the solarium

0:08:38 > 0:08:41where these warm lights will heat her up.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43So, Gail, how did Smartie do?

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Really well, you should be very proud of her.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49I think her swimming lessons will help her sore feet

0:08:49 > 0:08:53- and she deserves a gold star. - Brilliant, what did you guys think?

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- She did really well and very fast. - Yeah.- Yeah?

0:08:56 > 0:09:00- Oh, Gail, thank you very much for that.- Our pleasure.

0:09:02 > 0:09:07Matilda and Millicent, I've had an amazing time meeting you guys

0:09:07 > 0:09:09and seeing this lady swimming as well.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13I'd like to come back soon and see how you're getting on, is that OK?

0:09:13 > 0:09:18- Definitely.- Fantastic. Now, I wonder what Ferne's been up to?

0:09:23 > 0:09:24BEEP! BEEP!

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Today, I'm at a zoo in London where a team of vets help to care

0:09:30 > 0:09:32for lots of different animals.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34I'm here to meet vet Amanda,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37who's going to introduce me to one of them.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38Let's go.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48- Hi, Amanda, hi, Veronica! - Hi.- So who have we got here?

0:09:48 > 0:09:52This is Jimmy, one of our coatis, he's one of our older animals.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55- How old is he? - Around 11 years old.- Wow.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59- Something like that.- That's quite old for a coati, isn't it?

0:09:59 > 0:10:02They can live to be 15 so he's getting to the upper end

0:10:02 > 0:10:03of his age range.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06- What type of coati is he? - Ring-tailed coati.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10Coatis are from Central and South America, where they live

0:10:10 > 0:10:14mainly in the forests and spend a lot of the time in their trees.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Why do we need to check Jimmy today?

0:10:16 > 0:10:20We're going to do an overall health check on Jimmy today.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Because he's older, we monitor his health closely.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Also, he recently had a scratch on his eye

0:10:26 > 0:10:30- so we want to make sure that that's completely healed.- Oh, OK.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32What are you listening for with his heart?

0:10:32 > 0:10:36We listen to their heart to make sure the rate and rhythm is normal,

0:10:36 > 0:10:40then to the lungs to make sure they sound nice and clear.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44Like when you go to the doctor, they listen to your heart and lungs.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48- He doesn't have any heart problems? - His heart sounds good.- Fantastic.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52We check everything, make sure he doesn't have any scratches or

0:10:52 > 0:10:56scrapes and check his ears. He's distracted by the jam today!

0:10:56 > 0:10:59- He's doing a good job!- What are you looking for in his ears?

0:10:59 > 0:11:03To be sure they're nice and clean, there's not a lot of waxy debris

0:11:03 > 0:11:08and no scratches or anything that would indicate an ear infection.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12- I think he's getting a clean bill of coati health.- He looks wonderful.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15- What about his weight? - He's one of our smaller animals.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18He's 3.5 kilos and they can get up to five kilos.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22We monitor the body weight and condition of our animals very

0:11:22 > 0:11:26closely because we want them to be a healthy body weight

0:11:26 > 0:11:29because, just like people when they're overweight,

0:11:29 > 0:11:32they can be prone to diabetes and other problems.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35Jimmy weighs 3.8kg today which is a good weight for him.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39- Well done, Jimmy. - I'm just having a look in his eyes.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Previously when he had the scratch in his eye, it was cloudy

0:11:42 > 0:11:44because the eye was irritated.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48I can tell the cloudiness has gone away because that eye has healed.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50It looks really good.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53It's great that this little coati has a clean bill of health.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Veronica and Amanda, thank you for letting me

0:11:56 > 0:12:00see how you keep coatis like Jimmy healthy. It's been really fun.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04You're welcome, thank you for coming to see Jimmy.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11Recently, I met sisters Matilda and Millicent and their pony,

0:12:11 > 0:12:14Smartie, who'd been having hydrotherapy sessions.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18I'm back now to see how they're all getting on.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Hey, guys.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27- ALL:- Hi, Rory! - You're all looking well.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31- How's Smartie been?- She's a lot better.- That's brilliant.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- So the hydrotherapy's worked well? - Really helped.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Have you been riding her like vet Ben asked you to?

0:12:37 > 0:12:40We've been cantering, jumping and trotting.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44- She's moving well when you guys are on her?- Yes.- Brilliant.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47Millicent, are you ready to take her for a ride now?

0:12:47 > 0:12:49- Yeah.- Let's see her in action.

0:12:49 > 0:12:50Come on, then, Smarts.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54Off she goes, let's see how she's moving around.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57- She's trotting well, isn't she?- Yes.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59And is that how she's been?

0:12:59 > 0:13:03She was stiffer before she went to the hydrotherapy centre.

0:13:03 > 0:13:08- This has helped.- Yeah.- Are you going to have a shot now, Matilda?- Yeah.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10Let go...

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Wow, Smartie's even doing small jumps!

0:13:21 > 0:13:25- Brilliant, well done! Guys, hasn't she done well?- Yeah.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29I think that hydrotherapy is definitely helping, don't you?

0:13:29 > 0:13:30- Definitely.- Yeah.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33Thanks for joining us and finding out all about

0:13:33 > 0:13:36this lovely pony, Smartie.
