0:00:46 > 0:00:50We have goats, they're really cute.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52We have lots of ponies.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Ruby is my favourite.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01We have sheep and some chickens.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03I come here all the time...

0:01:04 > 0:01:07..and look after all the animals.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10I love them very much.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23- Hello, Ferne.- Hiya, Louis. Hi, Faye.- Hi, Ferne.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26- Who is this?- Violet.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28She is beautiful. What type of pony is she?

0:01:28 > 0:01:32- She's a Shetland pony. - And she's super-soft.

0:01:32 > 0:01:37- We've got some more animals as well. - Can you show me some of them?- Yeah.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39- Which way do we go?- This way.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42- See you.- See you!

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Look at all those chickens and ducks!

0:01:51 > 0:01:54- I love those sheep. They're so noisy.- Yeah.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Oh, wow!

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Look at these little guys!

0:01:59 > 0:02:02- Who is this?- Gerald.- He's gorgeous.

0:02:02 > 0:02:07- Hi, Gerald. And what breed of goat is he?- A pygmy goat.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Oh, he is wonderful. Pygmy goats can make great pets.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15They're intelligent and affectionate. They're lovely.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18There are so many animals here, Louis.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22You've got some noisy sheep and another little goat. Hello!

0:02:22 > 0:02:25And some ponies and some cats.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28How do you keep all of these animals fit and healthy?

0:02:28 > 0:02:33We give them the right food and lots of love,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36lots of water, and the vet comes down to visit.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39And I hear that Gerald is going to get a little

0:02:39 > 0:02:41- visit from the vet, is that right?- Yeah.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45Are you ready, Gerald? Here you go, buddy. Come on.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52This is vet Will.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54He has been a vet for eight years.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57While working at a vet school in South Africa,

0:02:57 > 0:03:01he performed surgery on an antelope with a twisted stomach

0:03:01 > 0:03:05and treated a wildebeest with an infected toe.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16- Hello, Will.- Hi, Ferne. Hi, Lewis. - So we've got lots of animals

0:03:16 > 0:03:18for you to see today, but first up is Gerald.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21- Now, how old is Gerald? - About seven.- About seven.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24- OK.- So he's the same age as you.- Yes.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27I'll start by having a look at his head and eyes.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31- What are you looking for with his eyes?- I'm checking they're clear,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34don't have discharge or tears or anything to show

0:03:34 > 0:03:36he's got an infection in his eyes.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39We'll have a look in his mouth. Good boy.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41We pull the lip down and we can look at his teeth.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45He's only got teeth at the bottom and not at the top.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48- But that's OK for a goat? - That's normal for goat.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51We listen to his chest with a stethoscope, that's next.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55So his heart and his lungs.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58STEADY HEARTBEAT

0:03:59 > 0:04:02If there's a problem in his heart, what would you hear?

0:04:02 > 0:04:04Sometimes you can hear a murmur,

0:04:04 > 0:04:09so it sounds like a rushing sound instead of a normal beating sound.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12If he's got an infection in his lungs,

0:04:12 > 0:04:15then it makes a raspy, noisy sound.

0:04:15 > 0:04:20But his lungs sound OK and his heart sounds fine, so I think he's OK.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Fantastic. That's great, isn't it?

0:04:22 > 0:04:26It's amazing what you can hear through a stethoscope.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29A stethoscope is a special instrument that is used to

0:04:29 > 0:04:33listen to the internal sounds of an animal.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36The round flat metal part rests on the area of the body

0:04:36 > 0:04:40being listened to, and the sound vibrates and travels

0:04:40 > 0:04:42up through the tubes to the earpiece.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49The heart and lungs are most often listen to...

0:04:51 > 0:04:54..as well as blood moving around the body.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01- Would you like to have a little listen?- Yeah.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03OK, pop these in your ears.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Put it on there like that.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- Oh.- Did you hear?- Yeah.- Good.- Is his heart beating fast?- Yeah.- So next,

0:05:11 > 0:05:15we'll check his feet. So he might wriggle a little bit, but we'll just

0:05:15 > 0:05:19- check that they're not too overgrown.- Goat hooves are just like

0:05:19 > 0:05:23- our fingernails, aren't they?- Yeah, so they keep growing for their whole

0:05:23 > 0:05:27life, and sometimes then, if they don't wear them down enough by

0:05:27 > 0:05:31walking around on rocks and things like that, we do sometimes

0:05:31 > 0:05:35- need to trim them.- How does his foot look?- Really good.- Well done.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39He's very wriggly. Another three feet to check. Don't be cheeky.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Shall we check the rest? That one's

0:05:41 > 0:05:46a little bit overgrown. It's just grown underneath a little bit.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49- Yeah.- OK.- Just need to just trim that slightly,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52but we don't want to trim them too much and make him sore.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55It's also a little overgrown there in the back.

0:05:55 > 0:05:56OK, and the same.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Because three of Gerald's hooves are a little long,

0:05:59 > 0:06:03vet Will uses clippers to trim them and make him more comfortable.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11So, Will, how did Gerald get on with his health check?

0:06:11 > 0:06:15Yeah, everything looks good. He looks really healthy, so well done,

0:06:15 > 0:06:19- you're looking after him very well. - Well done, Gerald.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23- He's resting his head on me.- He needs a snooze now. So who are we

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- going to check up next?- The sheep. - That sounds like fun.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30And now Gerald's feet are nice and trimmed, he can go back to his pen.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Now Louis, who do we have here?

0:06:37 > 0:06:40- Alvin, my brother's sheep. - Oh, he's lovely.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44- How old is Alvin? Five months old. So he's still a lamb, isn't he?- Yep.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48He's quite big. All right, Tom, you're next, wait your turn.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52- Will, where do you start with this little sheep check?- Well, it's

0:06:52 > 0:06:56pretty similar to the goats. We'll start by having a little look at his

0:06:56 > 0:07:01eyes. So checking for any cloudiness or discharge. That all looks good.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05- Great. Well done, Alvin. What's next for him?- His teeth. So just like the

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- goat, he's just got teeth at the bottom. And they all look good.- His

0:07:09 > 0:07:13- breath smells.- It does, doesn't it? Stinky sheep. So his eyes and

0:07:13 > 0:07:16mouth are good, even though he's got smelly breath.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- What's next?- We'll have a little listen to his chest.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23- Did you shave here? - No, that's just normal on a sheep.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27- They don't have any wool under there.- That makes it easier to hear.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31- It does, doesn't it? Perfect for listening, then, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35- And how do they all sound?- It sounds fine.- Well done, Alvin.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38- You're looking good. - We need to check his feet.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- Do you ever trim sheep hooves? - Yeah, you need to trim them

0:07:41 > 0:07:45if they're overgrown, but his look OK, so we can leave him.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47So how's Alvin's health looking altogether?

0:07:47 > 0:07:52- Yeah, he looks absolutely fine. He's a healthy young lamb.- There you go.

0:07:52 > 0:07:53Well done.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55While Alvin stretches his legs,

0:07:55 > 0:07:58let's see who else vet Will has seen today.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07While vet Will is visiting,

0:08:07 > 0:08:11he takes a look at some of the other animals living here.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Rosie the duck is examined for mites on her feet,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20and given a general check-up, too.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25Vet Will inspects Bobby the Shetland pony's eyes and teeth.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29He takes a look at Max's teeth, too, to make sure

0:08:29 > 0:08:31they don't need filing down.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37And Sophie the cat wants some attention from vet Will, too.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40She loves to have her ears tickled.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44GOAT BLEATS

0:08:44 > 0:08:47Louis, I've had a wonderful time meeting you

0:08:47 > 0:08:51and all your animals, especially Gerald and Alvin. I think they did

0:08:51 > 0:08:55- really well on their checks, do you? - Yeah.- I'd love to come back and see

0:08:55 > 0:08:59- how you're all getting on. Would that be OK?- Yeah, sure.- Thank you.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02I wonder what Rory's been up to.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14RORY: Today, I'm at an aquarium in Oban to meet Anna,

0:09:14 > 0:09:17who is an aquarist, which means she is part of the team

0:09:17 > 0:09:19who look after the animals here.

0:09:23 > 0:09:28Anna is taking me to meet Lewis, an otter who needs some special care.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34- Oh, wow. There's Lewis.- Yeah, this is Lewis, our North American river

0:09:34 > 0:09:38- otter.- What a beauty. So what are you checking him for today?

0:09:38 > 0:09:41Well, he's an older animal and he's got arthritis.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45Arthritis is a condition which can cause swelling, soreness and

0:09:45 > 0:09:49stiffness in the joints. A joint is a place in your body where two bones

0:09:49 > 0:09:53meet to allow you to move around, like your elbow or your knee.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- What are you going to do for Lewis to help him?- We give him special

0:09:57 > 0:10:01medication that helps with his joints and we also do some checks on

0:10:01 > 0:10:05him just to make sure he's not in any discomfort. But before I can do

0:10:05 > 0:10:08that, I need to get him some food, that's his reward

0:10:08 > 0:10:11- for being good.- OK, let's go get that sorted then.- OK.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13So what do we have here?

0:10:13 > 0:10:17Well, we've got Lewis's food here, it's a mixture of meat and fish.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20I'm just adding the anti-inflammatory for his arthritis.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25- OK, and that stops his joints from getting all swollen?- That's right.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29Then we're just going to add this powder, that's got glucosamine

0:10:29 > 0:10:31- in it, which also helps with his joints.- OK.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33And finally, a vitamin pill.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36And that's us all ready. All sorted.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38- Shall we get back, then? - Let's do it.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Anna goes in to see Lewis while I watch safely

0:10:43 > 0:10:45from the viewing platform.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47Anna, what have you got to do here?

0:10:47 > 0:10:51Well, first of all, I'm going to ask him to come up on his back legs,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54- just so I can see if he's moving OK.- Looking good?- Yes.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56So for doing that nice behaviour,

0:10:56 > 0:10:59I'm going to give him a treat.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02It's important to watch him eat, to see if he's favouring one

0:11:02 > 0:11:05side of his mouth over the other. Can I have a paw?

0:11:05 > 0:11:09- Good. Can you turn?- And what are you checking there, Anna?

0:11:09 > 0:11:13I'm just having a good look at his feet to make sure that there's no

0:11:13 > 0:11:17cuts or scratches on them. And by asking him to turn round, I can see

0:11:17 > 0:11:21- fully round all of his body.- And that's all looking good as well.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25That's all looking good. So now, I'm just going to give him a nice big

0:11:25 > 0:11:29piece of chicken. And then I'm just going to check down his back.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33So while I'm doing this check, I'm looking to see whether he's feeling

0:11:33 > 0:11:37any tenderness anywhere, and he would show that to me by pulling

0:11:37 > 0:11:41- away, but that all looks really good.- That's good. And what would

0:11:41 > 0:11:45- you do if it didn't feel good?- If he was showing some tenderness on his

0:11:45 > 0:11:49spine, we would definitely call the vet and ask him to check him over.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53OK. But you're quite happy today, that all felt good.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Yeah, he's not showing any signs of discomfort.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Even right down to his tail.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02Well, Lewis, you've been a fantastic patient, and Anna, thank

0:12:02 > 0:12:07- you so much for letting me see this awesome otter.- Thank you, Rory.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Recently, I met Louis, his mum Faye

0:12:11 > 0:12:15and some of their lovely animals who had a checkup from the vet.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18And now I'm back to see how they're all getting on.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28- Hiya, Louis. Hi, Faye.- Hi, Ferne. - Hello, Ruby. She looks beautiful.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31So how have all the animals been since Will came to visit?

0:12:31 > 0:12:33- They've been great. - That is fantastic.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37- Should we go and see Gerald? - Yes, please, I would love to.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39See you later. Bye, Ruby.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41CHICKENS CLUCK

0:12:41 > 0:12:46- Hello, Gerald. How has he been getting on since Will visited?- Good.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48How are his hooves looking?

0:12:48 > 0:12:52Gerald's hooves have been really good and there's been no trouble.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55- Which means he's a good healthy little pygmy goat.- Yes.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59Well done, Gerald. It's so great seeing him again, and he does look

0:12:59 > 0:13:04absolutely fantastic. Louis, I've had a wonderful time meeting you and

0:13:04 > 0:13:07seeing all of your fantastic animals. Thank you very much.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11I hope you've had fun, too, finding out about this gorgeous

0:13:11 > 0:13:13little cheeky pygmy goat.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17See you next time for more Ferne And Rory's Vet Tales.
