0:00:45 > 0:00:49Hello, my name's Amber and I love ponies.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53I like giving them strokes and cuddles.

0:00:53 > 0:00:58I come here for pony club where I help around the stable.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01This is Dougie. I like grooming him.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05He really enjoys being brushed too.

0:01:05 > 0:01:10My favourite thing is horse riding. It's so much fun!

0:01:17 > 0:01:22- Hi, Amber.- Hi, Rory.- And you must be mum, Sophie. Hello.- Hello, Rory.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Would you like to come and meet the ponies, Rory?

0:01:25 > 0:01:28- I'd love to. Are they in here?- Yeah. - Come on, let's go.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32- This is Harry.- He's gorgeous! Look at his hair!

0:01:32 > 0:01:36- Look how long it is! He's beautiful. What have we got here?- Apples.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Right. This is a treat for you, my friend.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Crunched it in one. Right, who else have we got? Who's down here?

0:01:43 > 0:01:46- Who's this?- Dougie. - Dougie. Hi, Dougie.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49- I think he's very interested in these apples, don't you?- Yeah.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Here we go. That's for you, Dougie. Good boy, Dougie.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57And somebody's getting very impatient for the apples,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00- aren't they?- Jack. - Jack. Here you go, Jack.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03- Is Jack the smallest one here? - Yeah.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06- Here's Trigger. - Trigger is gorgeous.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- Shall we give him an apple?- Yeah.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Amber, someone very special is visiting today. Who is it?

0:02:12 > 0:02:15- The pony dentist.- Yes, that's right.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17A pony dentist is also known as an equine dentist

0:02:17 > 0:02:21and they look after the mouths and teeth of horses and ponies,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23just like your dentist looks after your teeth.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25You can join us, Rory.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28That sounds like lots of fun. And you can join us too.

0:02:34 > 0:02:35This is Bea.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38She's not actually a vet, but an equine dental technician.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42She loves meeting new horses every day.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45She once treated an American mammoth donkey

0:02:45 > 0:02:48and has had afternoon tea with a goat.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56- Hi, Bea.- Hi, Rory. Hi, Amber.- Hi, Bea.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Now, Bea, you have a very special job.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01- You look after the teeth of horses and ponies.- I do indeed.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Just like us, horses have milk teeth, or baby teeth, first.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07These fall out and then they get all their adult teeth.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Amber, have you got your adult teeth or have you got some

0:03:10 > 0:03:11baby teeth as well?

0:03:11 > 0:03:15- I've got some of both.- Let me see, give me a big smile. Ding!

0:03:15 > 0:03:20- Now, how many teeth does an adult horse have?- Up to 42 adult teeth.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23- Wow!- But it all depends if they're a boy or a girl.

0:03:23 > 0:03:28- OK, and that's more than a human, right?- Yes. Humans get around 32.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- A lot of teeth to look at, so you're going to look at Jack first.- Yep.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34So what we start off with is an external examination of his head.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36We check for any lumps or bumps across the surface,

0:03:36 > 0:03:38and if there's any lumps or swellings,

0:03:38 > 0:03:40it could be an indication of a problem going on in the mouth,

0:03:40 > 0:03:44and then we go round and have a look at his nose and we look at the eyes

0:03:44 > 0:03:46and make sure there's no discharge coming out of them.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49- Discharge is like gunk, basically, isn't it?- Yeah. Yep.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50OK, but he's all clear, is he?

0:03:50 > 0:03:53- He's all clear.- Look at him opening his mouth for you!

0:03:53 > 0:03:54Nice big yawn there, wasn't it?

0:03:54 > 0:03:56We then start looking at his lips.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58So you see just there, he's got a bit of a sore?

0:03:58 > 0:04:00- Oh, yeah, yeah.- Just there.

0:04:00 > 0:04:01OK. And what do you think that's from?

0:04:01 > 0:04:04They shed their baby teeth at four and a half years old, roughly,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07so it's just a bit uncomfortable, so he's given it a bit of a rub.

0:04:07 > 0:04:08And Jack's five years old, right,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11- so he's still getting some new teeth in?- Yep.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14One there, and he's got one just coming through up at the top,

0:04:14 > 0:04:17- just there.- Yeah, just poking through on the top.- Yep.

0:04:17 > 0:04:18Once we've had a look around the gums

0:04:18 > 0:04:21and check they're OK, we then have a look at the front teeth.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Wow! What do you think, Amber?

0:04:23 > 0:04:26Those are some gnashers. RORY LAUGHS

0:04:26 > 0:04:28We turn my headlight on and that gives me

0:04:28 > 0:04:31a chance to check all the teeth and see if there's anything on the

0:04:31 > 0:04:33surface of the tooth that could be causing a problem.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- He's got a really long tongue. - He does, doesn't he?

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Amber, why do you think the teeth are flat at the back?

0:04:38 > 0:04:41- Chomping all the food.- Yeah.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44- So you're happy with how Jack's looking?- Very happy.- Great.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48- Well, what a good boy you've been. Well done, Jack.- Well done, Jack.

0:04:48 > 0:04:49Good boy.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54Just like us,

0:04:54 > 0:04:58horses and ponies have lots of teeth that need to be looked after.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02They have incisors at the front, canines in the middle

0:05:02 > 0:05:04and molars at the back.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08But unlike us, they can't brush their teeth themselves.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12The equine dentist will remove plaque, smooth rough edges

0:05:12 > 0:05:15and remove teeth if necessary.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19This is vet Elaine,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and she has given Trigger a special injection which makes him nice

0:05:22 > 0:05:26and sleepy, and that will mean he stays calm during his dental work.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28So, Bea, what's on for Trigger today?

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Trigger's getting a full examination where it

0:05:30 > 0:05:33requires us to check and treat all his teeth.

0:05:33 > 0:05:38- We're going to put a gag on first. - And why do you have to put a gag on?

0:05:38 > 0:05:41So I can do the back teeth and his lower teeth.

0:05:41 > 0:05:42This isn't going to hurt him, is it?

0:05:42 > 0:05:46No, it just looks a bit scary, but I can't ask him to open his mouth.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49- Of course.- I have to ask for help.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Trigger's sleepy head is heavy and difficult for him to hold up,

0:05:52 > 0:05:55so Bea gives him a special padded rest.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Bea now uses this really long mirror,

0:06:00 > 0:06:02so she can carefully examine all of Trigger's teeth.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05I'm checking each tooth for any cracks, any decay,

0:06:05 > 0:06:09any sharp edges, anything we need to be concerned about.

0:06:09 > 0:06:10And what are you seeing in there?

0:06:10 > 0:06:12It's looking good. He hasn't got any cracks,

0:06:12 > 0:06:14but he has sharp edges and a bit of plaque.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Now, sharp points, they can be a problem

0:06:16 > 0:06:18because they can cut his guns.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20And he's got a little sore just on his cheek,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23just where it's been pressing into his cheek a little bit.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27- First of all, Bea uses a circular file.- Ready, Trigger?

0:06:27 > 0:06:31FILE WHIRS

0:06:31 > 0:06:34The file removes any sharp edges on Trigger's teeth.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37That's a lot of noise, isn't it?

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Bea, you're putting your hand in there, are you just checking

0:06:42 > 0:06:44- to see how sharp it is?- Yeah.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Got a nice rounded edge to them now. I'm going to give him a break

0:06:47 > 0:06:49and then we'll start dealing with the plaque.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52And it's important to give him these breaks, isn't it,

0:06:52 > 0:06:53- to relax his mouth?- Yeah.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55If you go to the dentist and you open your mouth for a long

0:06:55 > 0:06:57period of time, it hurts, same thing.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59It's a good idea, isn't it, give him a break?

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Now we're going to take the plaque off his teeth.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Plaque is caused by a build-up of food on the teeth,

0:07:04 > 0:07:08so it's quite similar to you and I. Luckily, Bea is here to help.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- What's your tool here? - It's a little pic here.

0:07:11 > 0:07:12- To scrape those bits off.- Yep.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Just to scrape it off, a bit like the dentist does with you.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Wow, look at all that plaque coming off.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27- Trigger's all done now. - You've been very good.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29And while Trigger rests,

0:07:29 > 0:07:31let's see who else Bea has been checking on today.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Whilst Bea is visiting the stables,

0:07:40 > 0:07:43she takes a look at some of the other horses and ponies too.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48Flo has some sores in her mouth that Bea wants to examine.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50A little lump, just here.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53So we'll keep an eye on her, but if it starts to bother her,

0:07:53 > 0:07:57we refer her to the vet and they'll remove it.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58This is Harry.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01He's having a checkup just like Jack.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08And Minnie is having a thorough checkup too.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13All of their teeth are now sparkly clean.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Right, that's looking nice and cosy, isn't it, for Trigger?

0:08:21 > 0:08:24- Yes.- Perfect. And Trigger and the other ponies

0:08:24 > 0:08:26- have been really good today, haven't they?- Yes.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29It's been so interesting to see what a pony dentist does

0:08:29 > 0:08:31and awesome meeting you as well, Amber.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33I'd like to come back soon and see how you

0:08:33 > 0:08:36- and the ponies are getting on. Is that all right?- Yes, please, Rory.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40Now, while we make Trigger's bed cosy, let's see what Ferne's up to.

0:08:45 > 0:08:46CAR BEEPS

0:08:48 > 0:08:52I'm at a zoo near Winchester where they have lots of different animals.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Today, head vet Justine is going to show me one of them

0:08:57 > 0:08:59getting a health check.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03So, Justine, who have we got here?

0:09:03 > 0:09:07- This is Rufus and he's a red ruffed lemur.- He is beautiful.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09He's just under anaesthetic now, isn't he?

0:09:09 > 0:09:13Exactly, so we have given him an anaesthetic to make him sleepy,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16- so that we can give him a full health check.- Perfect.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Red ruffed lemurs, like all lemurs,

0:09:18 > 0:09:21come from the island of Madagascar, and they live in the rainforests

0:09:21 > 0:09:26and live high up in the trees. So, what is Rufus in for today?

0:09:26 > 0:09:28So, today, we're going to do a full body check

0:09:28 > 0:09:29and make sure he's really healthy.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33So, first, we're going to start by looking at his feet and his toes.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35Do you just need to check if the nails are too long?

0:09:35 > 0:09:39Exactly, or if there's any breaks in them or if they need trimming.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42These back feet, the shape of them are absolutely fantastic.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45It's perfect for gripping branches.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47So we'll have a feel of his tummy too.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49What are you feeling for with his tummy?

0:09:49 > 0:09:52I'm just feeling for any lumps and bumps that shouldn't be there,

0:09:52 > 0:09:54and it all feels really normal there.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56So what age is Rufus?

0:09:56 > 0:10:01- So, he's 18 now.- Wow!- Which is quite old for a lemur.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03But he looks fantastic for an old boy.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07Next, I'm going to have a listen to his heart and his lungs as well.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09HEART BEATING

0:10:11 > 0:10:14- How does his heart sound?- Sounds really good. Nice and regular.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18So now we're going to have an ultrasound scan of his tummy

0:10:18 > 0:10:20- and check there's no problems there. - Perfect.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Go between the fur.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25This ultrasound machine lets Justine see

0:10:25 > 0:10:29- a picture of the inside of the Rufus.- Guts at the moment.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32Are you just checking, then, if they're all clear

0:10:32 > 0:10:33- and he's eating properly?- Exactly.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36So, the black bits on the screen are gas,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38so if he's got any gas in his tummy.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41- So this is gas along here?- Exactly.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44- And underneath is his liver. - Just here.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49Oh, and look, you can see some heart beating. Oh, fantastic!

0:10:49 > 0:10:51And that looks good. There's no fluid around it,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55- there's no problems with the structure.- That is amazing.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58And then the last thing we're going to do is just try

0:10:58 > 0:11:00- and clean his teeth little bit. - Great.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02We're just going to scale his teeth and make sure that all

0:11:02 > 0:11:06the plaque and tartar has gone and they're nice and sparkly clean.

0:11:06 > 0:11:07Wonderful.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10DRILL SQUEAKS

0:11:10 > 0:11:14Because Rufus is fast asleep, he doesn't feel anything at all.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16They look brand-new.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19OK, I think we've done everything we need to do.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21Great. Great job, Rufus.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26Rufus has had a good checkup with no problems and once he wakes up,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29he can go back to playing with the other lemurs.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31Justine, it has been

0:11:31 > 0:11:33so interesting finding out what happens with the lemur

0:11:33 > 0:11:37examination and I loved meeting Rufus too. Thank you very much.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40No, thank you for coming, and thanks for all your help with him.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49Recently, I met Amber at a riding stables and saw

0:11:49 > 0:11:52lots of different ponies who were been visited by the equine dentist.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55I'm back today to see how they're all doing.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- Hi, Amber.- Hi, Rory.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02It's good to see you and it's also good to see Trigger.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- How are his teeth doing since the dentist visited?- Good.- Excellent.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07That's good to hear.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10- I think he definitely deserves a treat for that, don't you?- Yeah.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13I've got an apple here. There you go, buddy.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15And his teeth must be doing well

0:12:15 > 0:12:17- because he's crunching right through that apple, isn't he?- Yes.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20What a clever pony!

0:12:20 > 0:12:22What's going on here? Is he getting ready to go for a ride?

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Me and my friends are going for a ride in the park.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27That sounds very exciting.

0:12:27 > 0:12:32- Do you want to come, Rory?- I'd love to. Come on, Trigger, let's go.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36Here we go, buddy. Come on. Come on. What a good boy.

0:12:39 > 0:12:44- One, two, three, up. And over.- Well done.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47- What pony am I going to be riding? - Harry.- Who's...?

0:12:47 > 0:12:51Oh, there he is. There's Harry right there.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53- Do I jump on then?- Yes. - OK, here we go.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- How are you doing, Rory? - Good, I think.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08- How do you think I'm doing?- Good.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Amber, that was so much fun! It was absolutely brilliant

0:13:15 > 0:13:18and what a lovely park you've got here to go riding in.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20I have had a brilliant time meeting you,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23all your friends, and these gorgeous ponies too.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Thanks very much for having me. - Thanks for coming, Rory.

0:13:26 > 0:13:27You're very welcome.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30And I hope you've had fun finding out all about the ponies

0:13:30 > 0:13:32and the equine dentist too.
