0:00:44 > 0:00:46ALL: Hello!

0:00:46 > 0:00:50- I'm Zoe.- I'm Ned.- And I'm Florie.

0:00:51 > 0:00:56Today we are at an animal rescue centre which is near our school.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00This is the place where animals are looked after

0:01:00 > 0:01:03and are hopefully given new homes.

0:01:03 > 0:01:10There's ponies, donkeys, rabbits, cats, and even farm animals.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13And we're here to see their goose Clementine.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15She's very cute.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31- Hi, Florie. Hi, Zoe. Hi, Ned. KIDS:- Hello, Ferne!

0:01:31 > 0:01:33- Hi, Neil!- Hi, Ferne!

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Neil is one of the carers here at the rescue centre.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40This place is fantastic. There are so many animals, aren't there?

0:01:40 > 0:01:43- KIDS:- Yes.- But we're going to see one special animal. Who's that?

0:01:43 > 0:01:46- Yeah, we're going to see Clementine the goose.- Should we go see her?

0:01:46 > 0:01:49- KIDS:- Yeah.- Come on.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51CHICKENS CLUCK

0:01:52 > 0:01:56GOOSE HONKS

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Hello, Clementine. Hello.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02She is beautiful. What type of goose is she?

0:02:02 > 0:02:05- Emden goose. - She's an Emden goose?

0:02:05 > 0:02:10Wow, and I love her blue eyes. Ned, do you know how old Clementine is?

0:02:10 > 0:02:13- Five years old. - That's quite young, isn't it?

0:02:13 > 0:02:15How long do geese live for, Neil?

0:02:15 > 0:02:17- They can live up to about 18 years. - Wow.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21Can you guys see anything special about Clementine's feet?

0:02:21 > 0:02:24- Clementine has webbed feet. - Yeah, that's right.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27And why do you think webbed feet are good?

0:02:27 > 0:02:29- KIDS:- Because they're helpful for swimming.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Does Clementine like swimming, Neil?

0:02:31 > 0:02:34She loves swimming, especially in her big pond over there.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38I can see that she's limping, her right foot here is swollen.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Yeah, she suffers from arthritis, we like to try and keep an eye on it

0:02:42 > 0:02:45so we're hopefully going to get her to see the vet later on

0:02:45 > 0:02:47- and see if we can get it sorted out.- Oh, I hope so.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51So shall we go meet Ian the vet? And, Neil, you can bring Clementine?

0:02:51 > 0:02:53- Absolutely. - Come on, guys. Let's go.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07This is vet Ian.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10He is originally from the country Australia,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13where he used to care for kangaroos.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17And he once helped a camel with a sore tummy.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29- Hiya, Ian. Hi, Natasha.- Hey, Ferne. Hey, guys.- Hello.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Ian is one of the vets who works at the centre.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Natasha is a veterinary nurse who is helping out.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Where do we start with Clementine?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40We'll give her a check over and have a look at her sore foot.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44- Great.- So we start at her head, and just check her beak and her eyes,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47make sure they're nice and bright.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Do you think she looks bright and alert?

0:03:49 > 0:03:53- Or does she look sleepy and tired? - KIDS:- Bright and alert.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57She does look bright, doesn't she? She looks quite happy and bright -

0:03:57 > 0:04:00she's been eating her breakfast really well.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02It's good to check her general condition,

0:04:02 > 0:04:04so make sure she's not too skinny.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07How can you tell cos they're covered in feathers?

0:04:07 > 0:04:09You can feel, it's called the keel bone,

0:04:09 > 0:04:13and it's just in there, in their chest region down here.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16And the keel bone, it should be nice and round.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18It shouldn't be sticking up and pointy,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20and so you can feel for that.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22So if you want to have a feel, you can

0:04:22 > 0:04:26just gently rub your hands in here, and then you can just reach here.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28Can you feel there's a little ridge?

0:04:28 > 0:04:30What does it feel like, Ned?

0:04:30 > 0:04:34Is it nice and round or is it really pointing out? What do you think?

0:04:34 > 0:04:37- It feels a bit pointy. - A little bit pointy?

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Yeah. It's not too bad.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42But do you know what? You're probably right, and that probably

0:04:42 > 0:04:46says to us, maybe she's not as fat and happy as she could be.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48And can you guys think of a reason why

0:04:48 > 0:04:51she might not be feeling that happy at the moment?

0:04:51 > 0:04:54- She has a sore foot. - That's exactly right.- Bingo.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56I think you might be right.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59She damaged an ankle of hers earlier in the year.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02She's been left with this swelling, and she now has

0:05:02 > 0:05:05anti-inflammatories once a day, which helps,

0:05:05 > 0:05:09but just recently, she's become quite sore on that ankle again.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12So an anti-inflammatory is kind of like medicine that you

0:05:12 > 0:05:15- put in her food and it helps with the swelling, doesn't it?- Exactly.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- With swelling and soreness. Yeah.- OK.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19So we need to look a little bit further at this foot,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and see if we can do anything for her.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28When a wound or injury swells up, turns red and hurts,

0:05:28 > 0:05:31it's often a sign of inflammation.

0:05:31 > 0:05:36Inflammation is the body's way of sending the right healing cells

0:05:36 > 0:05:39to an injured part of the body.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43Arthritis is one possible cause of inflammation.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46It occurs when joints like your knees and ankles

0:05:46 > 0:05:47become sore and stiff.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52Inflammation is the body's way of telling us something is wrong.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57- OK, I'll come round and have a look at this foot.- Great.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59- Switch around. - What are you checking for?

0:05:59 > 0:06:01So I'm just checking for heat.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05It's important always to compare one foot to the other.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08- I'm checking it for heat. - What does it mean if it's hot?

0:06:08 > 0:06:10If it's hot, it could meet it's inflamed,

0:06:10 > 0:06:14which could be infection or it could be secondary to arthritis.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17It can give you clues as to what could be wrong.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Are you trying to see if she's got an infection

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- or arthritis that's making it swell? - Any clues, yeah.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25It's no hotter than the other foot,

0:06:25 > 0:06:30- but you can see she doesn't like playing around with this foot.- Yeah.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34These toes...certainly the central one is very stiff.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38And then I'll gently just check her...her tendons.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40She doesn't seem to mind that, does she?

0:06:40 > 0:06:44How do you think she's doing, you guys? Is she being brave?

0:06:44 > 0:06:47- KIDS:- Yeah. - Yeah? She's being very good.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50It doesn't look like it's sore for her when you touch it.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54No, it's not super sore, but again, I'm not going to squeeze too

0:06:54 > 0:06:57hard because we know that it is sore

0:06:57 > 0:07:00as she is limping on the leg more than previously.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03It's hard to tell why her foot is swollen. What's next?

0:07:03 > 0:07:07I'm going to take her to the surgery this afternoon

0:07:07 > 0:07:09and we'll do an X-ray to have a look

0:07:09 > 0:07:12and see what's going on inside that foot.

0:07:12 > 0:07:17An X-ray is a photograph that lets vets see the bones inside an animal.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Vet Ian has to take Clementine back to his surgery,

0:07:20 > 0:07:24where he has the special camera that can take the X-ray

0:07:24 > 0:07:27and later on, we'll get to see the photographs.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30While Clementine gets a much-needed X-ray,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33let's see who else Ian checked on today.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34CLEMENTINE YIPS

0:07:34 > 0:07:36- Yip yip yip!- Yip yip.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Vet Ian had a busy day seeing lots of animals

0:07:45 > 0:07:47that were at the rescue centre.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50There were loads of rabbits to check on.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55One called Flash hurt his back very badly, but he is now up

0:07:55 > 0:07:58and moving around again.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01He's clean, he's bright, it's amazing.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05Pumpkin the guinea pig had also hurt his back, and he had his teeth

0:08:05 > 0:08:10knocked out, but they are all grown back now and he is doing well.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14And this sparrowhawk was found with a broken wing.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17It will need an operation to help fix it.

0:08:18 > 0:08:23What an amazing job the team at the rescue centre and vet Ian do.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27CLEMENTINE HONKS

0:08:29 > 0:08:32We've got Clementine's X-ray here.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35This is where Ian saw more swelling on the foot.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37This is because she's got arthritis.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40But Ian will give her medicine to help with the pain

0:08:40 > 0:08:42and make her comfortable.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44- Isn't that good? KIDS:- Yeah!

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Yeah, well done, Clementine.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50I've had such a wonderful time meeting you and gorgeous Clementine.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54Would it be all right if I came back soon to see how you're getting on?

0:08:54 > 0:08:56- KIDS:- Yeah! - Thank you very much.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Let's see what Rory's been up to.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04CAR HORN HONKS

0:09:06 > 0:09:10RORY: At this wildlife park in the Highlands of Scotland,

0:09:10 > 0:09:14lots of different animals are cared for by a team of vets and keepers.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Today, vet Jane and keeper Morag are introducing me

0:09:19 > 0:09:23to an animal with some very impressive horns.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- Hi, Jane, Hi, Morag. BOTH:- Hi, Rory.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34- Who lives here?- We have markhor in here. Three boys.- Brilliant.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38Turkmenian markhor are a type of large goat found in central Asia.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41They've got relatively short legs, broad hooves,

0:09:41 > 0:09:43and an impressive mane.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47The coolest thing about them are the big curly horns on their head -

0:09:47 > 0:09:49both males and females have them.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Is there a particular animal you want to look at today?

0:09:52 > 0:09:56Today we'll look at Yoakum - the largest, oldest male we have here.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59He gets overgrown feet, so he's due a hoof trim.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02They're big animals, how do you get close enough to work on them?

0:10:02 > 0:10:06We have to use a tranquillizer, to put him in a deep sleep

0:10:06 > 0:10:08so we can go in and handle him and he won't get stressed.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10- Shall we get to work? - Yes.- Yeah.- Cool.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18Yoakum has been given a red dart with a tranquillizer in it

0:10:18 > 0:10:19to make him sleepy.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Once he's asleep, Jane and Morag cover his eyes

0:10:22 > 0:10:26with a jumper to keep him calm so they can treat him.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30OK, so Yoakum is lying here. What do you want to do first?

0:10:30 > 0:10:32First we want to check he's asleep enough

0:10:32 > 0:10:36and he's OK and there's not a problem with the anaesthetic.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38We'll put some cotton wool in his ears

0:10:38 > 0:10:42and try and keep the noise down so we don't wake him.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44- Then we'll listen to his heart. - OK.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46HEART BEATS

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- OK.- All sounding good? - Yeah, that also looks good.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53I'm happy he's nice and asleep, and we can go and do his foot trim.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57So these are some pretty big clippers you've got here.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00Those are some tough hooves to get through?

0:11:00 > 0:11:03They can be for the big nails - we have to trim off quite a lot.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Obviously this isn't painful cos he's asleep

0:11:06 > 0:11:08but when they wake up, there's no pain?

0:11:08 > 0:11:11No, it's like trimming your toenails.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15- He has no feeling in that at all. - How often do you have to do this?

0:11:15 > 0:11:18We have to do these guys about every three months, but in their

0:11:18 > 0:11:22natural environment, they'd live in a very rocky, hard area.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24They'd naturally wear away by rubbing on the rocks.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28Yes. It can cause problems and infections if they're too long -

0:11:28 > 0:11:32- the hoof splits.- Right, OK. Looks good.- OK. The other one.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35And, Jane, do you take the opportunity of the animal

0:11:35 > 0:11:39being in a deep sleep to check anything else while you're here?

0:11:39 > 0:11:43We'll do a health check because it's often the only opportunity we get.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44One left.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49We'll then put some antibiotic spray on his feet,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52which will give him blue feet for the rest of the day.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55The spray is just to stop any bugs getting in?

0:11:55 > 0:11:56Yeah, that's just...

0:11:56 > 0:11:58helps any infection.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Once the tranquillizer wears off, Yoakum wakes up

0:12:00 > 0:12:04and is back on his freshly trimmed hooves.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07You're both happy with how Yoakum's doing?

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Yep, happy. He's sleepy, but he's woken up nicely.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Feet look good. He'll snooze this afternoon.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15He's been a very well-behaved boy.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Thank you for letting me see such a cool procedure.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28Not long ago, I met Ned, Florie, and Zoe, and they introduced me to

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Clementine the goose, who had a sore foot.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Now I'm back to see how they're getting on.

0:12:34 > 0:12:35GOAT BLEATS

0:12:45 > 0:12:47- Hi, guys. KIDS:- Hi, Ferne!

0:12:47 > 0:12:50Are you giving these lovely ducks and chickens

0:12:50 > 0:12:52and geese some more straw?

0:12:52 > 0:12:54- KIDS:- Yeah. - Oh, fantastic job.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56- How's Clementine's foot? NED:- Good.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- Yeah.- Yeah.- Is she doing better? KIDS:- Yeah.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04Her foot is still swollen, but her new medicine must be working

0:13:04 > 0:13:07as she's having a lovely time swimming in that pond.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11It's fantastic that Clementine is doing so much better.

0:13:11 > 0:13:12Thank you for joining us,

0:13:12 > 0:13:17I hope you had fun finding out all about this beautiful goose.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19- FLORIE:- Well done, Clementine.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23See you next time for more Ferne And Rory's Vet Tales.
