0:00:43 > 0:00:49Hello, my name's Jamie. I just don't have one dog, I have lots of dogs.

0:00:50 > 0:00:55Eight of them are puppies - seven boys and one girl.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59They are only six weeks old.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02This is Willow, she's their mummy.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06She's really lovely and takes good care of them.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10This is Ruby, she's the puppies' granny.

0:01:10 > 0:01:15I love playing with all my dogs and giving them lots of cuddles.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30- Hi, Ferne.- Hiya, Jamie. Hi, Michelle.- Hi, Ferne.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33- Do you want to come in? - I would love to.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42FERNE GASPS Oh, wow, who are these?

0:01:42 > 0:01:45That's Ruby and that's Willow.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Hi, Ruby. Hi, Willow. They're beautiful.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50And is this Willow's first litter?

0:01:50 > 0:01:53- Mm-hm.- I can hear them now, they sound like a noisy bunch.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56A litter is the name given to a group of baby animals

0:01:56 > 0:02:00when they're born, like kittens, rats and puppies.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03- I think they want to say hello. Shall we get them out?- Mm-hm.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06- Get ready, Ferne, here they come. - FERNE LAUGHS

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Wow, hello!

0:02:09 > 0:02:11Hello, babies.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Eight puppies! They are so sweet.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18Hello. Jamie, what type of dogs by these?

0:02:18 > 0:02:19Golden Labradors.

0:02:19 > 0:02:20That's right.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25Golden or yellow Labradors are very popular in the UK and they can

0:02:25 > 0:02:30make great family pets, but also assistance or therapy dogs because

0:02:30 > 0:02:34they tend to be very friendly and also respond well to training.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- Jamie, do you play with these puppies a lot?- Yes.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40- That's important.- Yes, it's important to play with them

0:02:40 > 0:02:44- so they're used to being around children and other animals.- Aw.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48They're going to make great pets. Willow's doing such a good job.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52- She's a great mummy.- Especially for her first litter.- Absolutely.

0:02:52 > 0:02:57Ferne, would you like to take the puppies to the vet for a checkup?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- All eight of them?!- Yes.- Wow.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02That is going to be an adventure.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03Yeah!

0:03:08 > 0:03:09This is Alasdair.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12He's been a vet for seven years.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Once he treated an elephant with a sore ear...

0:03:18 > 0:03:21..and helped a monkey who had hurt its finger.

0:03:25 > 0:03:26Come on, pups.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33- Hi there.- Hi.- How you doing?- Good.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37- Do you have all the puppies with you?- Yes.- You've got them in their

0:03:37 > 0:03:41boxes. It's important to keep them separate from other animals before

0:03:41 > 0:03:45they've had their vaccinations so they don't pick up germs. Let's get

0:03:45 > 0:03:48- some puppies out.- Right, first box.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51- So who have we got here then, Jamie? - Suri and Maximus.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53Suri and Maximus.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57- Which one is this?- Maximus. - Aw, he's beautiful.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Right, Alasdair, what do we need to do first?

0:04:00 > 0:04:02First of all, I'll check his wee eyes.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05You want to check they're nice and clear,

0:04:05 > 0:04:09there's no muck coming out, there's no signs of infection,

0:04:09 > 0:04:11they're not red, not cloudy.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13They're perfect, nice wee clear eyes.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17We also check in the mouth that the teeth are all where they ought to be

0:04:17 > 0:04:21and that the jaws line up. Which they do. Next up, I would have a wee

0:04:21 > 0:04:25- listen to his heart.- Oh, wow, do you want to listen, Jamie?

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- I think it's going to be very quick. - It is quite quick.- Is it?

0:04:28 > 0:04:31- THEY LAUGH - I'll let you have a wee listen.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34HEART BEATS

0:04:34 > 0:04:35Are you trying to listen?

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- It's going quite fast.- Yes. - Does his heart sound good?

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Sounds good. So I'm just going to pop them on to the scales.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46- Let me see.- Good lad.- Aw.- Wow.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50- 3.9 kilos. He's a big boy. - THEY LAUGH

0:04:50 > 0:04:53- So he's nice and healthy.- Nice and healthy.- Good weight.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Good weight.- Come on, Max. - Out you come, silly.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Great, so, Suri's checkup.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Same again. So we're looking at her wee eyes.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05That one's a wee bit watery but her wee eye's not red or painful.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08I'll check that when she comes for her vaccination.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12- If it gets worse before then, bring her back.- Good girl, Suri.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15- What are you looking for? - I'm checking her ears

0:05:15 > 0:05:18are nice and clean. Often when you lift them up,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21they might be a bit red, which would be a sign of inflammation,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24- and often you'll get chunks of brown muck.- OK.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- But her ears are nice and clean. - Perfect.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Good job, Suri.

0:05:30 > 0:05:31Go on.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Puppies grow very quickly from birth.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41When they are born, they can't see or hear very much

0:05:41 > 0:05:45and their teeth haven't come through yet.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48They sleep a lot and eat a little and can only crawl.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52For the first few weeks, they will really need their mums.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Then, as they get older, their eyesight, hearing and teeth develop,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58and they can walk, run and play.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Now that Maximus and Suri have been checked over,

0:06:07 > 0:06:11it's time for Alasdair to look at the rest of the puppies.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13This is our fluffiest puppy.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17They're very squiggly, aren't they, Jamie?

0:06:17 > 0:06:21- I suppose this is all new to them. - HEART BEATS

0:06:21 > 0:06:233.2 and a wee bitty.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25- So who's this one, then?- William.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28- William was the first puppy born. - Oh, wow.- Was he?

0:06:28 > 0:06:32- So he's called William, it's a bit like Willow.- Aw!

0:06:32 > 0:06:34- He's nibbling at your glasses.- Oi!

0:06:34 > 0:06:37What's different about Zoomer, Jamie?

0:06:37 > 0:06:41He has white toes, the same as his dad, and he has black freckle.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42A black freckle.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Have you ever seen a Labrador with a freckle before?

0:06:45 > 0:06:48No, I think he's the first one.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52He's being so good, isn't he?

0:06:52 > 0:06:56There we go. This is important when you're playing with him,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59if you do check his paws and check in his mouth,

0:06:59 > 0:07:02it means he gets used to it.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04- 3.4.- The last two now.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08- So this is Arthur, then?- Yeah.- And how's he getting on?- Good.- Good.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12- He's already started bringing tennis balls back.- Has he?

0:07:12 > 0:07:16All the puppies have had their checkups and are looking good?

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- Yep, they're all in good health. - What do we need to do now?

0:07:19 > 0:07:23Now it's a case of carrying on, feeding them puppy food and getting

0:07:23 > 0:07:27them off the milk, and in a couple of weeks' time, they'll come in for

0:07:27 > 0:07:31their first vaccination and micro-chipping. Hello.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Let's see who else has been at the vets today.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42It's been a busy day at the vets

0:07:42 > 0:07:46and there were lots of animals to see.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48Joey the cat is having problems

0:07:48 > 0:07:53when trying to do the toilet, so he had some blood samples taken.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56And there were some chickens waiting to be seen, too.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00Linda and Ruth's owner brought them in because they were feeling

0:08:00 > 0:08:04poorly and she brought some of their poo for the vet to look at.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07What a lovely present to bring the vet!

0:08:07 > 0:08:10And we weren't the only puppies visiting today.

0:08:10 > 0:08:15These Border collie pups came in to get micro-chipped by Sarah the vet.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18What a busy day for Alasdair and his team!

0:08:19 > 0:08:23Jamie, I have had the most amazing time meeting your wonderful dogs

0:08:23 > 0:08:27and these gorgeous puppies. It's been so much fun.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31- Do you think I could come back and say hello when they're bigger?- Yes.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35Thank you, that'll be lovely. Let's see what Rory's been up to today.

0:08:46 > 0:08:47At this aquarium in Oban,

0:08:47 > 0:08:51aquarist Anna helps to look after many different animals.

0:08:52 > 0:08:58And today she's going to introduce me to some very special seals.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Good girl, Laura.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03- Hey, Anna.- Hi, Rory. - Who have we got here?

0:09:03 > 0:09:07Well, in this pool we've got Laura, Pippa, Macy and Boo.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11They are absolutely gorgeous and are very happy to see you. I wonder why.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14I've got a bucket of fish, which is their favourite thing

0:09:14 > 0:09:18- in the whole world.- Look at that! Anna, I've heard you've got

0:09:18 > 0:09:20some baby seals here. Is that right?

0:09:20 > 0:09:22We do, we have two baby seals.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26- Would you like to come and see them? - I'd love to.- Great. Let's go.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38- HE GASPS - Wow!

0:09:38 > 0:09:39Hi. Who do we have here?

0:09:39 > 0:09:44This is Norbert, he's a common seal pup and next door we have Dumbo.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48Oh, absolutely adorable. There are two different kinds of seal

0:09:48 > 0:09:52in the UK. There's the common or harbour seal, like this guy here,

0:09:52 > 0:09:56and then there's grey seals. Common seals are the smaller of the two.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Why do you have seal pups at the centre?

0:09:58 > 0:10:01They can be brought in for a number of reasons.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05They can be abandoned by their mothers or injured in some way

0:10:05 > 0:10:07or it could be through human interference.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11- These guys don't stay here forever, do they?- No, they don't.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Our aim is to bring them in when they need help and get them

0:10:14 > 0:10:19nice and healthy for release back to the wild. We always release a seal

0:10:19 > 0:10:21into the wild based on weight.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25- When they are about 25kg they're ready to go back.- Great, fantastic.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28What are we doing for these particular pups today?

0:10:28 > 0:10:33Today we're going to weigh Norbert and give Dumbo some lunch.

0:10:33 > 0:10:38Well, first of all, we've got to get the scales in. Nice and gently.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42And then we lift Norbert onto the scales,

0:10:42 > 0:10:45and to do that we wrap a little towel around his head

0:10:45 > 0:10:48- so that he doesn't get frightened. - PUP YELPS

0:10:49 > 0:10:53It might look unusual, but that towel's helping him keep calm.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57- 9.8 kilos.- OK, and you think it's going to be a while

0:10:57 > 0:11:00- before he's 25 kilos and can be released to the wild?- It is.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03It takes each seal a different amount of time

0:11:03 > 0:11:07- to get to the correct weight.- Great. A bit more food for you, Norbert.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10- Right, is that us done here? - We're done here.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- Now we need to prep some food. - We'll get Dumbo's food ready.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17- Anna, we're in the food prep room. - We are, this is where I'm going

0:11:17 > 0:11:21to prepare Dumbo's lunch. He will eat about 700g of herring

0:11:21 > 0:11:24and then we supplement it with vitamins and iron

0:11:24 > 0:11:27to make sure they're getting the correct nutrients.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- Great, is all that fish ready? - It's all ready to go.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33- Shall we go and feed Dumbo? - Yes, please.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37We're in the weaning pool, Rory. I'm going to feed Dumbo his lunch.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Great, can't wait to see it.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Oh, yummy!

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Almost down in one.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- Yeah, he doesn't hang about. - HE LAUGHS

0:11:49 > 0:11:50Oh, Dumbo!

0:11:50 > 0:11:53What a good boy. You have been an amazing seal pup

0:11:53 > 0:11:57and you deserve that treat. Hopefully, you'll be swimming

0:11:57 > 0:12:01in the sea very soon. Anna, thank you so much for introducing me

0:12:01 > 0:12:05- to these wonderful pups.- Thank you for coming to visit us, Rory.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Not long ago, I met Jamie, his mum, Michelle,

0:12:13 > 0:12:14and all of their lovely dogs.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18And now I'm back and I've come to Jamie's school to see how

0:12:18 > 0:12:22the puppies are getting on before they go to their forever homes.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24A forever home is where the puppies

0:12:24 > 0:12:27go to live with new owners who love and care for them.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Now that the puppies are a little older

0:12:30 > 0:12:32and they've been wormed and vaccinated,

0:12:32 > 0:12:36it's safe to bring them to meet Jamie's friends at his school.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39Hiya, Jamie. Hello, everyone.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41- Hello!- This is incredible.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44You're having a puppy party in your classroom.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46- Is everyone enjoying it?- Yeah.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Aw! They're very, very cuddly, aren't they?

0:12:48 > 0:12:53Jamie, these puppies have gotten so big! How old are they now?

0:12:53 > 0:12:57- Eight weeks.- They're huge. It is so much fun. Is this why you've brought

0:12:57 > 0:13:01- them here, Michelle?- Yes, the puppies get lots of cuddles,

0:13:01 > 0:13:04the puppies get well socialised and then they're ready to

0:13:04 > 0:13:08- go to their forever homes.- Isla, do you have a favourite puppy?- Yeah.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10- Which one?- A girl.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12- She's very cute, isn't she?- Yeah.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14What does he feel like?

0:13:14 > 0:13:15Soft.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Really soft.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19- Do you like petting him?- Yeah.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22- Do you all think they are going to make great pets?- Yeah.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26These puppies are so tired because they're still growing.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28- Yes.- They have a lot more to do

0:13:28 > 0:13:32if they're going to get anywhere as big as their mum.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Thank you for joining us

0:13:34 > 0:13:37and learning all about these lovely puppies.
