0:00:44 > 0:00:46CHICKENS CLUCK
0:00:46 > 0:00:50Hi, I'm Charlie, and this is my little brother Jack.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52These are our chickens.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56We have six.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59Some even lay eggs.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Eggwina is my favourite.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04She likes to sit on my lap.
0:01:04 > 0:01:08She's a rescue chicken, so I give her so much love.
0:01:19 > 0:01:21- Hello, Rory.- Hi, Charlie, hi, Karen.
0:01:21 > 0:01:25- Hi, Rory.- You can come and see my chicken, Eggwina.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27I'd love to. Let's go.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41Wow! Look at all these lovely chickens.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44- Are they all girls?- Yeah. - Yeah, I thought so.
0:01:44 > 0:01:47Female chickens are called hens once they start laying eggs,
0:01:47 > 0:01:51and male chickens are known as cockerels or as cocks.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54What's this very special chicken house called?
0:01:54 > 0:01:57- A coop.- Absolutely right. It's a chicken coop -
0:01:57 > 0:02:00the name of a chicken's house. Who do we have here?
0:02:00 > 0:02:04- That one's Taylor. - With the fancy hairdo?- Yes.
0:02:04 > 0:02:09- I love it.- And that one's called Charlie.- Charlie, just like you!
0:02:09 > 0:02:13- And who else? Who's under here? - And Eggwina.- Eggwina, there she is!
0:02:13 > 0:02:15Isn't she lovely?
0:02:15 > 0:02:18I would quite like to get a closer look at our friend Eggwina,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21- because that's who I'm here to see, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:02:24 > 0:02:25Let's take her out.
0:02:30 > 0:02:31Let's go and sit down.
0:02:31 > 0:02:35Tell me about Eggwina. What's going on with her?
0:02:35 > 0:02:38She's got a poor chest and we don't know what's happened to her.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42She does, doesn't she? Some feathers have come out,
0:02:42 > 0:02:44- it's quite red. She's a rescue chicken?- Yeah.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48You've taken her in and looked after her, it's lovely.
0:02:48 > 0:02:49It's an important thing.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51You need to keep an eye on your pets
0:02:51 > 0:02:55to make sure their looks or behaviour don't change too much -
0:02:55 > 0:02:59it could mean they're getting poorly and need medical attention.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02- What's the plan today? - We're taking her to the vet's.
0:03:02 > 0:03:06- Awesome. I'd love to come. Is that OK?- Yeah.- Let's take her. Come on.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15This is Ben. He's been a vet for eight years.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19His favourite animal is the manatee -
0:03:19 > 0:03:22and he once had to remove a pair of pants
0:03:22 > 0:03:25from a Cavalier King Charles spaniel's tummy.
0:03:36 > 0:03:40- Hello, Ben.- How are you doing? - All right.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44Good to see you. Hi, Rory. And how's Eggwina been doing?
0:03:44 > 0:03:47All right, but she's still got a little bit of a poor chest.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50A bit of redness on her chest still?
0:03:50 > 0:03:52- OK.- So you've seen Eggwina recently, Ben?
0:03:52 > 0:03:54That's right, yes, about a week ago.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57She had red patches all over her skin
0:03:57 > 0:04:00and some areas that didn't have any feathers on.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02What would you say it is? Why's it all red?
0:04:02 > 0:04:06There's a few things that can cause redness and loss of feathers.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09- Sometimes it can be related to parasites.- OK.
0:04:09 > 0:04:12We started off trying with some parasite treatment,
0:04:12 > 0:04:15some drops that we put across her skin.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19It looks like things are looking a bit better so far.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21This area at the front's still quite red -
0:04:21 > 0:04:24there was a lot of redness there before,
0:04:24 > 0:04:25and it's still a bit red,
0:04:25 > 0:04:28- but there's definitely some improvement.- Yeah.
0:04:28 > 0:04:33So, Eggwina has been treated for parasites. Let me explain.
0:04:33 > 0:04:38A parasite is another name for a tiny organism or creature
0:04:38 > 0:04:41that lives on or inside an animal.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45The parasite gets its food and shelter from the animal,
0:04:45 > 0:04:47and the animal is known as the host.
0:04:47 > 0:04:52Some parasites can cause disease, which can harm the animal,
0:04:52 > 0:04:55so it's best to get rid of the nasty ones.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02I think the next thing we should do, to start off,
0:05:02 > 0:05:06we can look at some of these feathers under the microscope,
0:05:06 > 0:05:09make sure there's no sign of anything else going on -
0:05:09 > 0:05:12but there's signs of new feathers starting to grow.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15Look at this! Can you see the new feathers coming in?
0:05:15 > 0:05:20- Amazing.- When they grow through, we should get some nice coverage there.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23They look quite funny when they've not grown in yet.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26Like a tube with the feather coming out of the top.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29Some of the parasites and things living on the skin
0:05:29 > 0:05:33are really small, so you can't see them just with your eyes.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36If we look under the microscope it makes them big so we can see -
0:05:36 > 0:05:39hopefully there won't be anything there,
0:05:39 > 0:05:42but we can check that the treatment's done the job.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46Let's have a look under the microscope and see what we can see.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50Ben's having a look at one of Eggwina's feathers
0:05:50 > 0:05:56- to see if there's any parasites. - All looks nice.- Yeah?
0:05:56 > 0:05:58No sign of anything there.
0:05:58 > 0:06:02- Do you want to have a look, Charlie?- Yes.- Jump up.
0:06:02 > 0:06:06- What can you see? - Straight lines and light.
0:06:06 > 0:06:10Let me see. That is very cool.
0:06:10 > 0:06:12Ben, are you happy with that?
0:06:12 > 0:06:14Brilliant - no sign of any parasites now.
0:06:14 > 0:06:18- I think we're on the right track. - Awesome. OK.- Excellent.- Let's go.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25So, you've had a good look at Eggwina, Ben.
0:06:25 > 0:06:26What's the next step?
0:06:26 > 0:06:30The next thing is to give an injection of an anti-inflammatory
0:06:30 > 0:06:32to make her more comfortable.
0:06:32 > 0:06:36An anti-inflammatory takes down the swelling and redness,
0:06:36 > 0:06:39so that should help make her feel better.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42- It's not going to hurt too much, is it, Ben?- Not at all.
0:06:42 > 0:06:47- Have you had an injection before, Charlie?- Yes.- Was it sore?- No.
0:06:47 > 0:06:51It wasn't sore? That's good. So, this should be OK for Eggwina?
0:06:51 > 0:06:55- That's good. Here comes the injection.- Right, here we go.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57We can just do it in this area here.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00Right, so, that should be it.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05OK. Right. Not a problem at all.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08She was very brave there! She didn't even move, hardly.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11What can I do to help Eggwina at home?
0:07:11 > 0:07:14We'll give you some drops to do at home
0:07:14 > 0:07:17so you can carry on giving her the medication,
0:07:17 > 0:07:20making sure she's nice and comfortable, if that's all right.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23An injection today and then some drops at home.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27You can do that? Excellent. How long do you think that'll take?
0:07:27 > 0:07:31We'll do it for about a week and see how things go after that.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35- We'll have another check after a week and see what's happening.- OK.
0:07:35 > 0:07:37Eggwina, I hope you get better soon.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40I think that's going to help very much.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43While we get this lady ready to go back to the coop,
0:07:43 > 0:07:46let's see what else has been happening at the vet's today.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54There were lots of different animals
0:07:54 > 0:07:57for Ben and the team of vets and nurses to see today.
0:07:59 > 0:08:01Baxter, a West Highland terrier,
0:08:01 > 0:08:04had a grass seed that was stuck in his paw removed.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10Tiny Tim, a Netherland dwarf rabbit,
0:08:10 > 0:08:12came in to have his teeth checked...
0:08:15 > 0:08:19..and Pippa, a Staffy cross, had an appointment
0:08:19 > 0:08:20to get her nails trimmed.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27All in a day's work for the staff at this busy vet's.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36Charlie, I've had an awesome time meeting you
0:08:36 > 0:08:38and your very cool chickens.
0:08:38 > 0:08:42- Can I come back soon and see how Eggwina's getting on?- Yeah.
0:08:42 > 0:08:47- Is that OK?- Yeah.- Awesome. Now, I wonder what Ferne's been up to.
0:08:53 > 0:08:54BEEP! BEEP!
0:08:56 > 0:09:01At this zoo in Whipsnade, they look after lots of different animals.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05Today, one of the vets who helps care for them, Nick,
0:09:05 > 0:09:09is going to introduce me to two very special new arrivals.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12This way.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16This is very exciting, because I hear you've had
0:09:16 > 0:09:19some babies born at the zoo recently.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22It's true. Two white storks, which are about to arrive now.
0:09:22 > 0:09:25Fantastic! They're beautiful.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27They're so much bigger than I thought.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30It's amazing. They're just over six weeks old.
0:09:30 > 0:09:34They've still got some growing to do, but they'll be enormous.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37- We want to check they're fit and well.- Perfect.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40We're doing a physical exam from their beak to their tail.
0:09:40 > 0:09:44- Great. Shall we get started? - We need to check their eyes
0:09:44 > 0:09:47to make sure they're healthy and haven't got any scratches.
0:09:47 > 0:09:51That looks completely normal. Can I have a look inside your mouth?
0:09:51 > 0:09:53What are you looking for?
0:09:53 > 0:09:56Make sure that there's no fungal plaques or anything.
0:09:56 > 0:10:00Making sure there's nothing growing that could make them ill?
0:10:00 > 0:10:03Yes, we want to feel down the neck to check the tubes
0:10:03 > 0:10:07that go down to their lungs and stomach are all OK.
0:10:07 > 0:10:09What are you listening for with that?
0:10:09 > 0:10:11I can hear the heart beating quite nicely,
0:10:11 > 0:10:15I can hear air moving through their air sac and lung system,
0:10:15 > 0:10:18and that all sounds completely normal.
0:10:18 > 0:10:22- That's all good.- So far, so good. - I'm just feeling their chest
0:10:22 > 0:10:25to see how well developed these muscles are.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28That feels good. They're in good body condition.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30They've been practising their flight?
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Yes, which we want, flapping and getting strong.
0:10:33 > 0:10:37I'll take one of these wings out, we can extend it a long way.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39- Wow.- This is the equivalent of their elbow.
0:10:39 > 0:10:43- Beautiful.- They are still quite pale, these feathers.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46That looks good, and that extends and flexes properly.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49You can see the legs are starting to change colour.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53Still quite grey higher up, then lower down they get pinker.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57Make sure their feet are healthy. These look good, nice and supple.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00We also want to take a bit of blood from this bird,
0:11:00 > 0:11:02to see whether it's a boy or girl.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06- So you can't tell by just looking at them?- They all look identical.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08Well done.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10So this chick's blood will be sent away,
0:11:10 > 0:11:13and get tests to find out whether it's a boy or girl.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15Does taking the blood hurt them?
0:11:15 > 0:11:19There's a tiny pricking sensation when you put the needle in.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22As soon as it's in, it's not painful any more.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25- That's why the bird's so calm. - Yeah. It's done really well.
0:11:25 > 0:11:29I think someone else is excited for their checkup next!
0:11:29 > 0:11:34The other stork chick gets the same checkup, and in a few weeks,
0:11:34 > 0:11:38they will be big enough to join the adult storks at the zoo.
0:11:38 > 0:11:41Nick, it's been great meeting you
0:11:41 > 0:11:44and finding out how you take care of these white stork chicks.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46- Thank you so much.- Pleasure.
0:11:53 > 0:11:56Not too long ago, I visited Charlie and his pet chickens.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00One of them, Eggwina, was poorly and had a rash on her tummy.
0:12:00 > 0:12:03I'm back to see how she's getting on.
0:12:12 > 0:12:14Hi, Charlie, hi, Karen.
0:12:14 > 0:12:18- Hello, Rory.- Hi, Rory!- And this must be little brother Jack.
0:12:18 > 0:12:20High five! Yeah!
0:12:20 > 0:12:24- So how's Eggwina doing?- All right. She's still got a bit of a rash.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26I think we should take a closer look.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28- Yeah.- Let's head in.
0:12:32 > 0:12:36- OK, Charlie, where's Eggwina? - She's the one in the corner.
0:12:36 > 0:12:38Right. I'll fetch her.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42OK. Got her.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51I can see that Eggwina's rash is still there,
0:12:51 > 0:12:53but the vet says if she is still quite happy,
0:12:53 > 0:12:56it's nothing too much to worry about.
0:12:56 > 0:12:57She's really happy, Rory.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00She's roaming around and pecking away.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02Those little brown spikes
0:13:02 > 0:13:05look like they might be new feathers coming through.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07She's probably going to be OK, I think.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10Well, she is doing fantastic.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12Charlie, I've had a great time meeting you,
0:13:12 > 0:13:15and the wonderful Eggwina the chicken.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18- Thanks for having me. - Thank you for coming.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20You're very welcome. Hope you've had fun
