0:00:47 > 0:00:51- Hello, my name's Skyler. - Hello, my name is Jayden.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54We like going to city farms.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58There are lots of animals at this city farm -

0:00:58 > 0:01:01pigs, ducks, chickens,

0:01:01 > 0:01:05rabbits, cows, sheep,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08guinea pigs and goats.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12There are big goats and small goats.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15The little ones are called Spritz and Blitz.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17They're pygmy goats.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22It's so much fun going to the farm.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Not all farms are in the countryside.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32City farms are in the middle of busy areas

0:01:32 > 0:01:35where you can go to visit lots of different animals.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39- BOTH:- Hi, Ferne!- Hi, Skyler. Hi, Jayden.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43- Hi, Alice.- Hi, Ferne. - Alice works here at the city farm.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47- So, who have we got here? - Barry and Kate.- They are super cute.

0:01:47 > 0:01:52- Can anyone tell me what type of goat they are?- A British Alpine goat.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54Wow, they are gorgeous, aren't they?

0:01:54 > 0:01:59There's too little goats that I see in the back there. What are they?

0:01:59 > 0:02:02- They're pygmy goats. - They're so cute, aren't they?

0:02:02 > 0:02:06- Jayden, do you know what their names are?- Spritz and Blitz.

0:02:06 > 0:02:07Those are great names!

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Something special is happening today, isn't it?

0:02:10 > 0:02:12- They are going to the vet.- Oh, wow!

0:02:12 > 0:02:16Alice, how are we going to take these goats to the vet?

0:02:16 > 0:02:21We're going to put them on their leads and we'll walk them down.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25- So is this Spritz with the white face?- Yeah.- This is Spritz, yeah.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- He's beautiful, isn't he, Skyler? - Yes.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Come on, Spritz and Blitz!

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- How was that, Jayden?- Good.- Yeah?

0:02:39 > 0:02:41- You go on.- Come on.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44All right, to the vet! Come on.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57This is vet Tim.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00He's been a vet for 14 years.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05He once treated a wallaby with a sore tooth.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10And helped a reindeer whose tummy was blocked up.

0:03:16 > 0:03:22- Hi, guys.- Hello.- Hello.- So, this is Spritz and that's Blitz.- OK.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24What do you need to check first today?

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Today they are having their vaccinations,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30but I want to check that they're healthy first,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33so we make sure they're OK before their injections.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Let's start with Spritz. Head facing me.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38We'll check his eyes are nice and clear,

0:03:38 > 0:03:40no cloudiness, no whiteness.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43- That's to make sure he can see properly.- Absolutely.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47We want to make sure his teeth are all healthy.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50- They've only got bottom teeth. - Absolutely.- That's right.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54- Why do they have that? - Because they love chomping grass.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58- That is exactly right.- So happy on that front.- Oh, well done.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00So if you hang on to him for a second,

0:04:00 > 0:04:03I'll have a listen to his heart and lungs.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06I just need to get in behind his elbow.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- HEARTBEAT - Just listen to his heart.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11I want to check how fast it's beating

0:04:11 > 0:04:14to make sure it's working healthy,

0:04:14 > 0:04:17and that it's nice and regular.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21- It all sounds good so far. A nice strong heartbeat.- Well done, Spritz.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25So we listen over his lungs to make sure there's no wheezes

0:04:25 > 0:04:28or other noises that we wouldn't expect.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32Really happy from that point of view. If you can turn him round.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35- All right.- I want to take his temperature.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37So this is a bit tricky, isn't it?

0:04:37 > 0:04:40It's a little bit uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43He's got a thermometer now. Well done, Spritz.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45What's the ideal goat temperature?

0:04:45 > 0:04:49About 39 degrees which is pretty much spot on for where he is.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53So we're all happy and healthy from that point of view.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Good job, Spritz. - OK, so Spritz is all good to go.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59- I'm happy to give him his vaccination.- OK.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07Vaccinations are injections, just like we might have to get.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Goats need to be vaccinated to help protect them

0:05:10 > 0:05:14and stop them from getting many different diseases.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17They get some when they are a few weeks old,

0:05:17 > 0:05:19more after a few months,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and then some vaccinations once every year.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25VAN BEEPS

0:05:27 > 0:05:32- So, I need to get in just around here behind his shoulder.- OK.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- He may not like this quite so much. - But it's just like a scratch.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40So it's just like us getting our injections.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43- Look at that, didn't even notice.- Wow!

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Well done, Spritz! Is that him all done?

0:05:46 > 0:05:50- That's him all done for the moment. - You've been a very brave boy.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55While Skyler and Jayden give Spritz some well-earned treats,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57it Blitz's turn for her check over.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Teeth look good.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Vet Tim does the same checks on Blitz

0:06:02 > 0:06:05and she's ready for her vaccination as well.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11- BLITZ BLEATS Oh, well done.- Aw.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14There we go. All done.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Spritz and Blitz have had their health check

0:06:17 > 0:06:18and they're looking good.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22They've also had their vaccinations. What's next for the goats?

0:06:22 > 0:06:25We're going to check their hooves.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28If they're overgrown, we're going to trim them.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- Why is that important?- So that they're happy walking on them.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35We don't want them in pain, so we check their hooves regularly.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39- Shall we start with Spritz?- OK. You hold her tight.- Yes.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41I'm going to pick up the hoof.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46Can you see on the end there we've got a little bit of overgrowth?

0:06:46 > 0:06:47They shouldn't feel it.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51- Is it a bit like getting your fingernails cut?- It is.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53- And does that hurt?- No.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57- Stand nice and still. - That's one foot done.- Great.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59So you can see overgrown there

0:06:59 > 0:07:02so we're going to cut that little bit off.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05OK. You can see that's now been nicely trimmed back.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08- It looks a lot cleaner already. - Absolutely.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- Are you OK there, Ferne?- Yep.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Done, Spritz. One more little leg.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Is Blitz having a good look?

0:07:18 > 0:07:20- BOTH:- She's very curious.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24- All done.- Well done, Spritz. - It's your turn, Blitz.- Yes.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26OK. We'll go nice and quickly.

0:07:26 > 0:07:31So, again, a little bit of overhang there. We just trim that back.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34It doesn't hurt them at all.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38- Do you think it might tickle a little bit?- I think so.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- You can see where the dirt gets built up.- Oh, yeah.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Often when they're moving around, jumping up on things,

0:07:44 > 0:07:47they'll wear it down themselves,

0:07:47 > 0:07:51but we want to check every few months to make sure it's going down.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54OK. Last hoof. There we go.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57So, nice and level. There we go.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59- That looks so much better. - Well done.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03- Nice and quick, doesn't hurt them at all.- No. There we go.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07While these little goats get some well-deserved treats,

0:08:07 > 0:08:11let's see who else vet Tim is checking up on today.

0:08:14 > 0:08:19Vet Tim had a few other animals to check on at the city farm today.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Pigs Amelia and Penelope were having their six-month checkup.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31Gordon the sheep was having his teeth checked.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35Tim looked at a newborn silver-laced Sebright chick

0:08:35 > 0:08:38to make sure its muscles were growing properly.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40And he checked on Kane,

0:08:40 > 0:08:45a British Alpine goat whose horn is growing down instead of up.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53- That was great, wasn't it?- Yeah!

0:08:53 > 0:08:56Skyler and Jayden, I've had so much fun meeting you

0:08:56 > 0:08:59and finding out about these gorgeous goats.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03Do you think we can come back and see how they're getting on?

0:09:03 > 0:09:05- Yeah!- Yeah, of course we can. - Good idea.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09While Spritz and Blitz get to play with their friends,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11let's see what Rory's been up to.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Today I've come to the safari park near Stirling.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27I'm here to meet head vet Paddy and keeper Lynn

0:09:27 > 0:09:32who are going to introduce me to a real-life giant.

0:09:32 > 0:09:37She's been brought in to the safe enclosure for a check over.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40- Hi, Lynne. Hi, Paddy. - Hi.- Hi, Rory.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44- And we've got a great big elephant here as well.- Yes, we do.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- Who's this?- This is Mondula, an African elephant.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49She is absolutely gorgeous.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53African elephants are the largest land mammals in the world.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57They can be up to four tonnes in weight and four metres in height,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00which is about the size of a double-decker bus,

0:10:00 > 0:10:02and sometimes even bigger than that!

0:10:02 > 0:10:05What are you checking out with Mondy today?

0:10:05 > 0:10:07We've come in for our routine checks

0:10:07 > 0:10:10and also Lynne has pointed out a lump behind the ear

0:10:10 > 0:10:13that we need to look at and make sure it's OK.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Because Mondy is so big and powerful, she has to stay

0:10:16 > 0:10:20in this special enclosure while she gets her checkup.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23How are you going to get close to have a look safely?

0:10:23 > 0:10:25I've got these nice long target sticks here.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29Mondy's trained to touch them with different parts of her body.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33Every time she touches, I'll click so she knows she's done

0:10:33 > 0:10:37- the right thing and she'll get a vegetable reward.- Delicious!

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Mondy, target. CLICK

0:10:39 > 0:10:42Mondy, left.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45- CLICK Good, Mondy.- Wow.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49- What are you checking here? - We're checking the nail quality.

0:10:49 > 0:10:54Any signs of redness or inflammation on the nails, that's soreness.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Then checking the pads of her feet to make sure

0:10:56 > 0:11:00there are no abnormalities that could cause problems

0:11:00 > 0:11:03- when she's walking.- OK. How's it looking?- Looking fine.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05Mondy, target. Good girl.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08- So I'll just weigh her now. - Is this a big weigh station here?

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Yeah, so these are her scales.

0:11:10 > 0:11:15- So she is 4,028.- 4,028 kilograms!

0:11:15 > 0:11:19That's heavier than the weight of two cars! Is that a good weight?

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Is that what you'd expect for an elephant of her age and size?

0:11:23 > 0:11:28Yes, it's about average for Mondy, around four tonne is good for her.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31- OK, that's good.- Mondy, ear.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33- Steady, Mondy. - So, where is this lump?

0:11:33 > 0:11:37- It's just this wee lump here. - Oh, yeah.- It's a slight swelling.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41We're having a feel, making sure that's OK and she's comfortable

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- when you're moving it around. - Any idea what it is?

0:11:44 > 0:11:48It looks like a fatty lump so it should be nothing to worry about

0:11:48 > 0:11:52but we'll probably take some samples to see what's inside it.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55- To find out if you should be concerned about it.- Exactly.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59- Then we can take appropriate measures.- Mondy, trunk!

0:11:59 > 0:12:00- CLICK Good, Mondy.- Wow.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04- What have we got in the mouth? - They only have four teeth.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06They have two at the top and two at the bottom.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10- They are big, long teeth, sort of in the shape of a brick.- Wow.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14- Are the teeth looking good? - They're looking nice and healthy.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18- We don't have any concerns. - Excellent. Good aim, Lynne!

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- Thanks. Practice.- Mondy, you've been a marvellous patient.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Lynne, Paddy, thank you for letting me see

0:12:24 > 0:12:27this incredible animal and the cool checks today.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30- You're welcome. - You're more than welcome.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38Recently I met Skyler and Jayden at a city farm and now I'm back

0:12:38 > 0:12:41to find out how the goats are getting on

0:12:41 > 0:12:43after their visit from the farm vet,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46and we've got two new friends joining us

0:12:46 > 0:12:50who love visiting the farm too. This is going to be fun!

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Ready?
