0:01:34 > 0:01:35Aw, hello.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Here are the kittens, Ferne.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41- Oh, they're stunning. How many do you have?- Five.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Is that a handful of kittens?

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Yes!

0:01:45 > 0:01:48- And how old are they?- Seven weeks.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Hello!

0:01:51 > 0:01:55- They're quite cute, aren't they? - They're so cute and so fluffy.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58So do all of the kittens have names?

0:01:58 > 0:02:02There's Ruckus, that's a black one.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04We haven't named them all

0:02:04 > 0:02:08because some of them are going to their forever homes.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12The forever home is the home the kittens are going to go to

0:02:12 > 0:02:14with brand-new owners,

0:02:14 > 0:02:18who are going to take care of them just as well as you guys have.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20- Who's this?- That's Blue.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22- Is this their mother?- Yes.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25She's beautiful. The colour of her eyes is incredible.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27A nice orangey colour, isn't it?

0:02:27 > 0:02:31- She's got this shaved bit because she had an operation.- Yes.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34That means she can't have any more kittens.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- But I think five is a lot of kittens.- Yes.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43Blue is cleaning the kittens because they can't clean themselves yet.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45So, Thomas, what do the kittens eat?

0:02:45 > 0:02:50They eat soft food, but they drink milk, too, from their mother.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54I love the noises they make when they feed.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56They do this, don't they?

0:02:56 > 0:02:59If they sneeze, it's quite cute as well.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- Is it?- Yeah.- Little kitten sneeze.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Your kittens look so healthy, you're doing a fantastic job

0:03:05 > 0:03:08of caring for them. Is there something we need to do?

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Yes, take them to the vet for their first ever check-up.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16- Do you want to come?- I'd love to. Shall we get their carry case?

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Come on, kittens.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32This is vet Amelia. She has been a vet for seven years.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35She has a ginger rescue cat called Pumpkin.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40And she has worked with a lot of farm animals like cows and sheep.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52- Blue's kittens, please.- Hi, Amelia.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59So we've got five kittens for their very first health check today.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01- Here we are.- OK.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04So I'm going to check him from head to tail, all right?

0:04:04 > 0:04:07So I'm looking at his eyes now.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11I'm seeing if there's any birth defects or anything that will stop

0:04:11 > 0:04:12him seeing.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14And I'm going to check his ears.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19We have to check that he's got no ear mites and his ears aren't itchy.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24See, look down there. So his ears and eyes look really good.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28- Fantastic, well done, Ruckus.- Check your little nose. That looks good.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31What are you looking for in their nose?

0:04:31 > 0:04:36If there's any discharge coming from the nose, so any bogeys.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- And look in his mouth.- He's got lots of sharp teeth, doesn't he, Thomas?

0:04:40 > 0:04:45- Yes.- And they are really nice and clean. See there? Lovely.

0:04:45 > 0:04:46He's good, isn't it?

0:04:46 > 0:04:49OK, so I'm just feeling his tummy now,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52- checking that there's no hernias. - What's a hernia?

0:04:52 > 0:04:54It's something they're born with,

0:04:54 > 0:04:57a little lump in the muscle that can cause problems.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Now we'll check the little one's heart.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- Do you think it's going to be like drums?- Yeah.

0:05:04 > 0:05:09So his heart sounds really good, so you can have a little listen.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12You have to put those in your ears.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14- HEARTBEAT - Can you hear it?

0:05:14 > 0:05:15Thank you.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- Wow.- Really fast, isn't it?

0:05:17 > 0:05:20It sounds healthy, it's a good strong beat.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22- It is.- Why is it so fast?

0:05:22 > 0:05:26Because he's little and little animals have fast heartbeats,

0:05:26 > 0:05:28and he might be a bit worried.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30- Shall we weigh Ruckus now?- Yes.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34I think he's the biggest of all the kittens, because he's a boy.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Let's check. You pop him on there. That's it.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40OK, what does he weigh?

0:05:40 > 0:05:42- 91g.- That's it.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46- Is that healthy or unhealthy? - That's very healthy.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48But he's not a tubby kitten, is he?

0:05:48 > 0:05:51No, he's a good weight, a very healthy weight.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56- That's the end of Ruckus's health check. You can put him away.- Great.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- There we are.- Here we go, buddy. Well done.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08When kittens are born, their eyes are closed

0:06:08 > 0:06:11and their ears are folded over so they cannot hear yet.

0:06:11 > 0:06:16They spend most of their days sleeping, just like newborn babies.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19They start moving more around three weeks old.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23This is also when their baby teeth start to grow and,

0:06:23 > 0:06:27just like us, kittens lose their baby teeth and get adult ones.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33The kittens are doing brilliantly at their very first check-up.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Who's next?

0:06:37 > 0:06:41Someone was having a bit of a snooze.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42Beautiful.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46Each of the other kittens get the same thorough checkup as Ruckus.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51Amelia makes sure their eyes,

0:06:51 > 0:06:53ears,

0:06:53 > 0:06:55nose

0:06:55 > 0:06:58and mouth are clean and healthy.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02She checks their tummies for hernias.

0:07:02 > 0:07:07We can't check your tummy lying down. This is one cheeky kitten.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11And listens to their heartbeat

0:07:11 > 0:07:13with a special tool called a stethoscope.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16HEARTBEAT

0:07:17 > 0:07:21And finally, she checks that each kitten is a healthy weight.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24- All done. - Great job, little one.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30So how are the kittens doing, Amelia?

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Really good, all fit and healthy.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34So what do we have to do with them now?

0:07:34 > 0:07:38Just look after them, give them lots of love and attention

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- and playtimes. - You can do that, can't you?

0:07:41 > 0:07:43- Definitely, Ferne.- Perfect.

0:07:43 > 0:07:48Let's see who else has been visiting the vets today.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56Blue's kittens weren't the only cats to visit the vet today.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Michael brought in Elani for an examination

0:07:59 > 0:08:02after noticing her ears had got a bit gunky.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Ruth brought Toby the labradoodle in for a check-up

0:08:06 > 0:08:07after an operation.

0:08:07 > 0:08:12He's wearing this cone-shaped collar so he doesn't pull out any stitches.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Basil the rabbit is ready to go home with his owners

0:08:15 > 0:08:20after having four teeth removed. They had grown in crooked.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23And Lulu the Bichon Frise is diabetic,

0:08:23 > 0:08:26so her owner Justine brought her in for a blood test.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36Thomas, I've had a fantastic time meeting you and your kittens.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39I was wondering if I could come back and visit

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- when they go to their forever homes? - Yes, please.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Thank you very much. Now, I wonder what Rory's been up to today.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48What's he been doing?

0:08:54 > 0:08:55HORN

0:08:55 > 0:08:59This wildlife park in Scotland has lots of different animals,

0:08:59 > 0:09:02all looked after by a team of vets and keepers.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Today, I'm going to meet some.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06- Hey, Jean.- Hi, Rory.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Who have we got in this enclosure?

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Red pandas. Mum and Dad, who are Kitty and Kevin,

0:09:11 > 0:09:12and we have two youngsters.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Although they have a similar name,

0:09:15 > 0:09:18red pandas are not closely related to giant pandas,

0:09:18 > 0:09:21but they do eat bamboo and live in the forests of Asia.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25Some say they may be related to raccoons.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28What are you doing today?

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Our plan today is to have a look at the babies,

0:09:31 > 0:09:33give them a very quick health check,

0:09:33 > 0:09:35sex them to see if we have boys or girls

0:09:35 > 0:09:39and put microchips in, so they've all got their individual ID.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42How are you going to go about this process?

0:09:42 > 0:09:43Here's our microchip.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47The actual chip lives in the syringe, in the needle bit,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50and we inject it in. And we have a scanner here.

0:09:50 > 0:09:51So the number's up there.

0:09:51 > 0:09:56- And that's different for every animal.- Each animal has its own ID.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Zookeepers Vicky and Louise bring the baby red pandas

0:09:59 > 0:10:00out of their nest boxes.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04They aren't used to being handled, so make a really loud squeak

0:10:04 > 0:10:06to call to their mummies.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09What are you going to check for first?

0:10:09 > 0:10:12We'll sex them, we want to know if they're boys or girls

0:10:12 > 0:10:15and we'll try and do it as quickly as we can.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17BABY RED PANDA SQUEAKS

0:10:17 > 0:10:19He's a boy.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21So I'm going to use this microchip.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Louise has to turn him around

0:10:23 > 0:10:26and I can try and put a microchip in the back of his neck.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28Just there.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32- This doesn't hurt him too much? - No, it's like an injection.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34And then we'll take the scanner...

0:10:35 > 0:10:38..and just check, and that's fine.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Quick look to make sure he's fit and healthy,

0:10:40 > 0:10:42we make it as quick as possible.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- All looking good? - That's the noisy one done.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47- OK, pop him back.- Now Vicky's one.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49This one's grunting quite a lot!

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Let's just turn her around if we can.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54See if it's a boy or a girl first.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Two boys. Another boy.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Brilliant. Time for the microchip.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Yeah. So same thing here.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04How old is this little one?

0:11:04 > 0:11:07- Just over a month. - Just over a month old?

0:11:07 > 0:11:10- So cute.- That's him, just do a quick check.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14- Chip's all working?- Yeah. Teeth aren't quite there yet.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16And, as I say, that'll do.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- Are they still getting milk from their mums?- They will do, yeah.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- This one's all done?- All done.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24We'll put them back and let them settle

0:11:24 > 0:11:28- before Mum comes looking for them. - Of course.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Jean, thank you so much for introducing me

0:11:31 > 0:11:35- to those gorgeous baby red pandas. - That's no problem. Thank you.
