0:01:43 > 0:01:46Also joining us are Footy Pups, Rex and Rozzie.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50So, that's today's team.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52CHEERING

0:01:52 > 0:01:56- OK, guys, gather round. It's team-talk time!- ALL:- Yay!

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Today, we're going to look at cricket.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02It's a sport you play in teams with a bat and a ball.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Cricket is quite different to football,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07so I've invited along a friend to tell us a bit more.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Niall O'Brien -

0:02:10 > 0:02:15international cricketer, superstar batsman and wicketkeeper.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18When Niall's not playing for Ireland...

0:02:18 > 0:02:21he's playing with his county cricket club.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Hi, Niall. Thanks for joining us.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- Thanks for having me. - Can you explain cricket to us?

0:02:28 > 0:02:31Yeah. Cricket is like football. There's two teams.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34One team bats and protects the wicket,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36while the second team bowls.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40The wickets are three poles with two pieces of wood on top, called bails.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42It's like a goal in football.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45A bowler tries to hit it and the batsman defends it.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Wow! Sounds exciting.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50So, we strike the ball with our bat, instead of our boot.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Is there a special way to hold the bat?

0:02:52 > 0:02:56If we place one hand on top of the handle, second hand underneath,

0:02:56 > 0:02:58and you can see we've got two Vs.

0:02:58 > 0:03:03- That's how we hold it.- OK. Brilliant. Shall we have a go?

0:03:03 > 0:03:07Let's see if we can make those Vs with your hands. Well done.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11- Excellent!- What are the three things to remember when batting?

0:03:11 > 0:03:14We need to make sure we lift the bat up, not too high.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Step towards the ball and swing through.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21- So, Niall's set us up with a game. What do we need to do here?- OK.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23The aim is to keep the ball on the ground,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27line ourselves with the ball and hit it through the arch.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Great start from the team!

0:03:29 > 0:03:34Lift your bat back, step forward and then swing your bat forward to hit.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Yeah!

0:03:36 > 0:03:37Brilliant stuff!

0:03:37 > 0:03:39See that power?

0:03:39 > 0:03:40Nice!

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Dan lines it up. Lovely!

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Focus your eyes on the ball.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47- Yeah!- Yes!

0:03:47 > 0:03:51One V, two Vs, OK? That will give you control.

0:03:51 > 0:03:52Emily takes a swing.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Nicely done!

0:03:54 > 0:03:56That's a good shot!

0:03:56 > 0:04:01Whilst these guys keep practising, here's a reminder for you at home.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Raise your bat, step forward

0:04:04 > 0:04:08and swing the bat forward to strike the ball.

0:04:09 > 0:04:10Now, we have a challenge.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Throw the ball to your partner who needs to bat it away.

0:04:14 > 0:04:15Off you go!

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Good bowl from Dan.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19Great hit!

0:04:19 > 0:04:21- Yeah!- Yeah!

0:04:21 > 0:04:22Keep your eyes on the ball,

0:04:22 > 0:04:25so you can get the timing right of when to swing for it.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Lovely stuff!

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Too early. Step into it.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Great advice, Niall.

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Awesome!

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Brilliant, Emily! High five on that one!

0:04:40 > 0:04:42Oof! Good catch!

0:04:42 > 0:04:47- Well done, Rex!- Thanks, Rozzie! Cricket is fun, isn't it?

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Remember that time Freddie taught us how to play?

0:04:50 > 0:04:51Ha-ha! Oh, yes.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Welcome to Pupton Park, where the Cheer-fleaders

0:04:57 > 0:05:00have turned the ground... into a cricket pitch?!

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Woo-hoo!

0:05:02 > 0:05:05- Agh!- Woo-hoo! Hee-hee!

0:05:05 > 0:05:06Huddle up, Pups!

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Today, you're going to play a game

0:05:08 > 0:05:11of cricket against the Cheer-fleaders.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15But we've never played cricket before!

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Oh! This looks scary!

0:05:18 > 0:05:20Don't worry, Pups.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Cricket uses some of the same skills we use in football.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26And, look, I've made a cricket scoreboard

0:05:26 > 0:05:29out of some bits of wood I found in my shed.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Isn't she beautiful?

0:05:32 > 0:05:33Oh!

0:05:35 > 0:05:40In cricket, one team bowls the ball, to try and hit these bits of wood,

0:05:40 > 0:05:41called a wicket.

0:05:41 > 0:05:47The other team protects the wicket, using their bat to hit the ball.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49The batting team works in pairs.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53When they hit the ball, they score points, known as runs,

0:05:53 > 0:05:57by running from one wicket to the other! Woo-hoo!

0:05:57 > 0:05:58What fun!

0:06:02 > 0:06:03Agh!

0:06:03 > 0:06:08If a fielder catches the ball before it bounces,

0:06:08 > 0:06:10the batter is out.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15The batter is also out if the bowler hits the wicket with the ball.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18Ah, wow! Let's play!

0:06:18 > 0:06:19Oh, can I bowl first?

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Sounds like a Puppy Plan!

0:06:26 > 0:06:27Ha-ha-ha!

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Being wicketkeeper is just like being a goalkeeper -

0:06:31 > 0:06:34I get to practise my catching and guard the wicket.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Ooh! The ball's a bit smaller, though.

0:06:36 > 0:06:37Hee-hee-hee!

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Oh!

0:06:39 > 0:06:42You won't catch any cricket balls here, lad.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44That's what I'm hoping!

0:06:45 > 0:06:46Woo-hoo!

0:06:48 > 0:06:50Catch it, laddie! Agh!

0:06:50 > 0:06:54- Oh!- Argh! Oh! Argh!

0:06:54 > 0:06:59I'm supposed to chase the ball! The ball isn't supposed to chase me!

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Yippee! Four runs!

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Argh!

0:07:09 > 0:07:10Woof! Ha-ha!

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Nice catch, Benny.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Pickles, stay still.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20- Huh? - I'm trying to hide from the ball!

0:07:20 > 0:07:21Ooh!

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Oh, what a howler!

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Three more runs! Woohoo!

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Those Fleas have been rushed off their feet,

0:07:31 > 0:07:33scoring an impressive 60 runs.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Now, it's the Pups' turn to bat, but what's Rex wearing?!

0:07:37 > 0:07:38Ha-ha!

0:07:38 > 0:07:42This'll stop that naughty ball from hitting me! Ha-ha!

0:07:42 > 0:07:43Whoa!

0:07:43 > 0:07:44Oof!

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Do you need a hand up, Rex?

0:07:46 > 0:07:51No, thanks. I'm just going to stay right here.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53First in to bat for the Pups is Geraldine.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Allez! Woo, woo, woo!

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Well done, Geraldine. That's one run.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Now, it's my turn.

0:08:07 > 0:08:08Yah!

0:08:08 > 0:08:12Oh! Mind my beautiful scoreboard!

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Geraldine is running,

0:08:18 > 0:08:22- but a Flea fielder has hit the wickets and she's out!- Oh!

0:08:22 > 0:08:26And as Benny goes in to bat, the score is now...erm...

0:08:26 > 0:08:29Oh! Hang on a minute! Oh!

0:08:29 > 0:08:31..60 runs to the Fleas

0:08:31 > 0:08:33and 16 to the Pups.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35- Yeah!- Woof!

0:08:35 > 0:08:39- Out!- Oh!

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- Oh!- Do you want me to bat next, Rex?

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Thanks, Rozzie.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Freddie, can I, uh, miss my go? I don't want that ball thrown at me.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51Oh, that's what the bat's for, laddie.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53You use it to deflect the ball,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56just like you do with your foot in football.

0:08:56 > 0:08:57Watch Rozzie.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01Quick! Run, Pickles!

0:09:03 > 0:09:06- HE GASPS - Look out!

0:09:06 > 0:09:08I'll save you!

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- Oh!- Argh!

0:09:10 > 0:09:15Great shot, Rex. You saved me and my scoreboard!

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Uh, does that mean I can go for tea now?

0:09:19 > 0:09:21No, I think it's your turn to bat.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23Uh-oh!

0:09:25 > 0:09:27Whoa, whoa!

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Oof. Huh? Hmm.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Oh, Rex!

0:09:31 > 0:09:34You're meant to hit the ball with your bat, not your tail!

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Use the bat? Of course!

0:09:38 > 0:09:40Oh! Yah!

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Don't forget to run, Rex!

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Oh, yeah.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49Ha-ha-ha! I think I'm getting the hang of this!

0:09:51 > 0:09:53And as the match continues,

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Rex and Pickles are the perfect pair,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57scoring run after run!

0:09:58 > 0:09:59Agh!

0:09:59 > 0:10:03This is no place for my precious scoreboard!

0:10:03 > 0:10:04Oh!

0:10:04 > 0:10:07Looks like the Pups and Fleas have 60 runs each,

0:10:07 > 0:10:11which means the Pups only need one run to win the match.

0:10:15 > 0:10:16Yah!

0:10:19 > 0:10:23- Ah! We've done it! - Oh, I want to keep running!

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- BOTH:- Hi, Rachel!- Hi, guys.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26R-R-R...Rachel, what have you got there?

0:12:08 > 0:12:09Come and have a look.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12To play this game, you need to bat, bowl and run.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15A player from one team throws the ball to a player

0:12:15 > 0:12:18from the other team who is batting.

0:12:18 > 0:12:19They must strike the ball,

0:12:19 > 0:12:23and if they do, they run back and forth to score a point.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28If a ball hits the batter's wicket, they cannot run.

0:12:28 > 0:12:29Oh!

0:12:29 > 0:12:33After two balls, the team-mates batting and bowling swap over.

0:12:33 > 0:12:38The winners of this game are the team who score the most points.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40- Three, two, one... - WHISTLE BLOWS

0:12:40 > 0:12:44Both teams look ready. Oh, it's a huge hit from Erin!

0:13:13 > 0:13:18Paige is next bowling and George for the Blues batting.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53Keep your eyes on the ball.
