0:01:56 > 0:01:57Come on in, Kiwa.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Hello, Dr Ranj.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01I'm not very well.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03I've got a poorly ear.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05- SHE SIGHS - Oh, that's not very nice.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09- How long have you had a sore ear? - A long time.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12It started being itchy and them it got worse yesterday

0:02:12 > 0:02:13when I went swimming.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16- Do you go swimming a lot? - Every week.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20I love it! My grandma says that I am like a mermaid

0:02:20 > 0:02:24because I can swim so well in the water by myself.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27- Does your head go under the water when you swim?- Yeah.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29I always swim underwater.

0:02:29 > 0:02:36In fact, one time I went so deep, I saw a dolphin.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39And I'm not even kidding you.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40- A dolphin?! - Hmm.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42- In a swimming pool? - Yeah.

0:02:42 > 0:02:47- Really?- Well...it might have been a blow-up dolphin.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51- Ow! - Does your jaw hurt as well?

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Yeah, From here to here.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58I think we need to have a look to see what's going on.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00SHE GASPS What's that?!

0:03:00 > 0:03:02This is an auroscope.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- An otoscope? - No! An auroscope.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09- It's got a strong light and it lets me look inside your ear.- Oh.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11There we go.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13- Argh! - Oh, I see.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16The inside of your ear's really red and swollen.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19- Yeah.- Is it difficult to hear? - Yes!

0:03:19 > 0:03:23When I'm listening to my music it's all... Whaa! Whaa!

0:03:23 > 0:03:28- Like my head's in a pillow. - Kiwa, you've got an ear infection.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Infection?! I've heard that word before!

0:03:31 > 0:03:35And infection is when germs get inside the body and cause trouble.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- Ooh!- Come over here, I've got a great way to explain all of this to you.

0:03:39 > 0:03:44OK.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Now this is a model of the ear.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49This is the outside bit, the bit that you can see,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51and this is the inside, the bit that I was looking at with my otoscope.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55Wow! There are lots of parts to our ears.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Which part has the infection?

0:03:58 > 0:03:59This part here. The ear canal.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03Now, a healthy ear has got ear wax in it.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Euww! Have you ever tasted ear wax before?

0:04:05 > 0:04:08- HE LAUGHS - Kiwa, you didn't.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12It's gross. But my grandma says you have to try everything once.

0:04:12 > 0:04:17Kiwa, ear wax contains all the dirt and dust that gets inside your ear.

0:04:17 > 0:04:18You don't want to be eating that.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Euww! I didn't realise that.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Ear wax is actually pretty clever stuff,

0:04:23 > 0:04:25it coats the inside of your ear canal,

0:04:25 > 0:04:27protecting it from harmful germs.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29So why didn't my ear wax protect me?

0:04:29 > 0:04:34Ah-ha! Imagine this is the water from the swimming pool.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Now, swimming is great exercise, but every time you put your head under the water

0:04:38 > 0:04:41it washes away a little bit of the ear wax.

0:04:41 > 0:04:42Like this.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45So I haven't got anything protecting my ear!

0:04:45 > 0:04:47- That's bad isn't it. - Uh-huh.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49And sometimes this can happen.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Are they germs, Dr Ranj?

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Yep. - Boo! Boo! Ow!

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Ohh! The germs get in and upset the inside of your ear

0:04:59 > 0:05:01and that makes it swell,

0:05:01 > 0:05:05so you can't hear properly and it makes your ear sore.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09How do our ears hear, Dr Ranj?

0:05:09 > 0:05:16I know, let's ask Nurse Morag and the Healthy Helpers to explain.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19- Hello, Nurse Morag. - Hello, Dr Ranj.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21Hi! It's Kiwa.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- Hello, Kiwa. Have you got a question for me?- Yes, I have.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27How do our ears hear?

0:05:27 > 0:05:28That's another excellent question.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31I think it's one for my Healthy Helpers.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34# Catch that ball Yeah, it's your go

0:05:34 > 0:05:37# Give me questions Catch and throw

0:05:37 > 0:05:40# Healthy Helpers will show and tell

0:05:40 > 0:05:43# How you can keep fit and well

0:05:43 > 0:05:45# Catch that ball Yeah, it's your goal

0:05:45 > 0:05:48# Have some questions catch and throw

0:05:48 > 0:05:50# Healthy Helpers will show and tell

0:05:50 > 0:05:53# How you can keep fit and well

0:05:53 > 0:05:58- # Ask me what you need to know - # Ask the nurse

0:05:58 > 0:06:00# Catch that ball Yeah, it's your goal

0:06:00 > 0:06:03# Give me questions Catch and throw

0:06:03 > 0:06:04# Healthy Helpers will show and tell

0:06:04 > 0:06:08# How you can keep fit and well

0:06:08 > 0:06:12# Ask me what you need to know

0:06:12 > 0:06:16# Give me questions Catch and throw

0:06:16 > 0:06:20Today, I'm in Nottingham and my Healthy Helpers are...

0:06:20 > 0:06:23Hello. My name's Evie. And I like pond dipping.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Hello. My name is Omar. And I like football.

0:06:27 > 0:06:33Hello. My name's Jasmine. And I like going to weddings!

0:06:33 > 0:06:38Hello. My name is Daniel. And I really like running.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41ALL PLAY

0:06:41 > 0:06:45- Hello, Healthy Helpers. - Hello!

0:06:45 > 0:06:47- How are you all? - Good!

0:06:47 > 0:06:53Excellent. Now, before we answer the question how do our ears hear,

0:06:53 > 0:06:56I want to know, why do we need our ears?

0:06:56 > 0:07:02So then we can hear the cars when we're going to cross the road.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05That's right. It's very good for when we need to cross the roads.

0:07:05 > 0:07:10Because we need to hear nature and things like birds.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14That's right. Because the birds sing such beautiful songs, don't' they?

0:07:14 > 0:07:17And what about you, Jasmine? What do you think?

0:07:17 > 0:07:24So we can hear our pets if they need some food or drink

0:07:24 > 0:07:27or they need to go out.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Very good. because there's lots and lots of different sounds,

0:07:30 > 0:07:31aren't there?

0:07:31 > 0:07:34And they tell us what's going on round about us.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36There's also really loud sounds.

0:07:36 > 0:07:41Do you think you could play a loud sound on that drum? As loud as can.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43Very good! Now we need a quiet sound.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45Who could do a really quiet sound?

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Me, I could. - Omar, you do a wee quiet one.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- I'll try. - OK.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53- TRUMPET SOUNDS SOFTLY - Fantastic!

0:07:53 > 0:07:54Our ears are really clever.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57They're one of the parts of our body that tell us

0:07:57 > 0:07:59what's going on all around us.

0:07:59 > 0:08:05Now, shall we go and play a game to find out how our ears work.

0:08:05 > 0:08:06(ALL) Yes!

0:08:06 > 0:08:08OK, Let's go!

0:08:08 > 0:08:11BIRDSONG

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Right, Evie, you and I will come here.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Now, some people find it harder to hear and need a bit of help.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Evie, what have you got to help you hear?

0:08:20 > 0:08:23- A hearing aid. - What's that?!

0:08:23 > 0:08:26It's a little thing to help you hear better.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Can I see it?

0:08:29 > 0:08:31Wow! You've got a glittery one!

0:08:31 > 0:08:36And that helps you hear better, doesn't it?

0:08:36 > 0:08:38You pop it back in just now.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42Very nice! I've never seen one with glitter before.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45You go and join the Healthy Helpers.

0:08:45 > 0:08:50Now, Healthy Helpers, inside our ear we have a tube,

0:08:50 > 0:08:52not a plastic tube like this one

0:08:52 > 0:08:56and it's not a big as this or nearly as long,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59it's a tiny, tiny tube.

0:08:59 > 0:09:04And what I want you to do is, Evie, if you could hold this end.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06OK.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08This tube is like the one in our ear.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12And this funnel here like our ear is going to collect all the sound

0:09:12 > 0:09:14and take it down the tube.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18So you pop that to your ear and see if you can hear me. You ready?

0:09:18 > 0:09:22If you can hear me, stamp your feet.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Excellent! Good. Pass it down to Omar to have a shot.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35If you can hear me, clap your hands.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38Excellent.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41So, we can see that tubes are great for carrying the sounds

0:09:41 > 0:09:44that we collect from our ear.

0:09:44 > 0:09:45At the other side of the tube,

0:09:45 > 0:09:49there's something like a drum and it's called your eardrum.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51And whenever the sound reaches the eardrum,

0:09:51 > 0:09:56it wobbles off it and that tells you what you're hearing.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00So, poor Kiwa can't hear properly

0:10:00 > 0:10:03because she's got a sore ear and the tube is getting squashed.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07So shall we try and squash this tube and see what happens?

0:10:07 > 0:10:11Right, guys. There we are.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Are you ready to listen?

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Pop it to your ear.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18If you can hear me, touch your nose.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Oh! Jasmine can't hear us because the tube's got blocked,

0:10:23 > 0:10:27just like poor Kiwa's tube in her ear.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29And that, Kiwa, is how your ears work.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32The part of your ear we can see catches the sound

0:10:32 > 0:10:36and sends it down a tube where it hits a small drum.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38And that's what tells you what the sound is.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41But sometimes the tube can get blocked

0:10:41 > 0:10:44or germs can get trapped there making it sore

0:10:44 > 0:10:46and that stops the eardrum from working properly

0:10:46 > 0:10:49and I can make it harder to hear as well.

0:10:49 > 0:10:54(ALL) Get well soon. Bye-bye, Kiwa!

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- Bye, Nurse Morag. - Bye! And thank you, Healthy Helpers!

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Yes, thank you.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Oh, I wish I could be tiny for a day,

0:11:02 > 0:11:05then I could explore inside an ear.

0:11:05 > 0:11:06That would be cool.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Right, time to get you better.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11I'm going to give you some medicine that you drop into your ear.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Eardrops! To fight the germs?

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Exactly! Your ear will get better

0:11:16 > 0:11:19and in an few days the wax will be back to do it's job.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21- Oh. - And until your ear heals,

0:11:21 > 0:11:26I'll give you some medicine to stop that nasty pain.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Oh! Ow! My ear really hurts!

0:11:30 > 0:11:32SHE SIGHS

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Look inside.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37# You feel a an aching in your ear

0:11:37 > 0:11:39# It's hurting more and more

0:11:39 > 0:11:44# I will look inside to see why your ear's so sore

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- Thank you. - # My special drops will make it stop

0:11:49 > 0:11:53# So go to see the doctor when your ear goes, "Ow!"

0:11:53 > 0:11:55# Go to see the doctor Go there now

0:12:00 > 0:12:05Ooh, look inside, Dr Ranj, it's all ticky-licky.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08# You feel a tear is coming near

0:12:08 > 0:12:09# It hurts so much in there

0:12:09 > 0:12:12- It really does. - # No need to sigh unhappily

0:12:12 > 0:12:14# And slump down in your chair

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- Ow! - # It only takes some dripping drops

0:12:17 > 0:12:20# To ease that pain away

0:12:20 > 0:12:23# So... go to see the doctor when your ear goes, "Ow!"

0:12:23 > 0:12:25# Go to see the doctor Go there now

0:12:25 > 0:12:28# Go to see the doctor when your ear goes, "Ow!"

0:12:28 > 0:12:30# Go to see the doctor Go there now

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- # Go to see the doctor - When your ear goes, "Ow!"

0:12:33 > 0:12:35- # Go to see the doctor - Go there now

0:12:38 > 0:12:40- # Go and see a doctor - Go there now
