0:01:00 > 0:01:03Why do you think you've got what it takes?

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Hey, guys.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36To work in the music industry, you have to be able to handle pressure.
0:01:36 > 0:01:37But it's not always easy,
0:01:37 > 0:01:40as our younger singers are about to find out.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42Oh, I've completely forgotten!
0:01:42 > 0:01:44Take a deep breath, man. You're going to be absolutely fine.
0:01:44 > 0:01:47When the music stops, rush to a stop.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49LAUGHTER
0:01:50 > 0:01:53I just realised that actually I shouldn't have said
0:01:53 > 0:01:56that I lie to my mum. I said five white lies a month.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03Welcome back to the music mansion.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05Morning, guys. ALL: Morning.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08So we're halfway through now and we've tied, having four people,
0:02:08 > 0:02:10one a sing-off.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12But there's still four sing-offs up for grabs,
0:02:12 > 0:02:16so it's anyone's game. So, Matt, were you hoping to get one?
0:02:16 > 0:02:18Yeah, I'm hoping I'll do very well in the industry challenge,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21but it's really competitive now.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24Dianne, the more the challenges go on, do you feel the pressure?
0:02:24 > 0:02:26Yeah, I just want to win another.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29I think it's all really starting to heat up.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31I think the kids are really noticing what it's like
0:02:31 > 0:02:33to be in the music industry.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37It's a new song today. You ready to find out what it is? ALL: Yeah.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41# I've got, got Got what it takes now... #
0:02:44 > 0:02:47Each episode, musical director David Tench
0:02:47 > 0:02:49will teach the group a new song.
0:02:49 > 0:02:54But only three will get to perform it in the end-of-show sing-off.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56So, David, how do you feel about this song?
0:02:56 > 0:02:59I think the song will suit the boys more than the girls.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02There's been quite a lot of female songs and big notes, R&B,
0:03:02 > 0:03:04money notes, you know?
0:03:04 > 0:03:07It, kind of, leaves the boys a little bit in the cold.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09So this one is a chance for them to just concentrate on their
0:03:09 > 0:03:11performance and get their vibe across.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16It's time for me to reveal the song to the group.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20So, guys, I bet you're dying to find out what your next song is.
0:03:21 > 0:03:24The song three of you will be performing is...
0:03:29 > 0:03:32It's Not Right For You by The Script.
0:03:35 > 0:03:39# If you even have to think about it... #
0:03:39 > 0:03:42The Script have sold over 20 million records, have three
0:03:42 > 0:03:46multiplatinum albums and have even performed for the Queen.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49Evan, you seem to be a massive fan of the song.
0:03:49 > 0:03:51It's really my favourite song to sing in the world.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54So far all of the songs have been like, yeah, I really want to
0:03:54 > 0:03:57give it a shot and everything. This song, I'm going to go for it!
0:03:57 > 0:04:00Lily, do you know the song?
0:04:00 > 0:04:03No, I'm not really a massive fan of The Script. Sorry, Evan.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07When I first heard the song I thought it was a boy's song
0:04:07 > 0:04:11rather than a girl's song and boys usually sing it.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14# She said, is this the life You've been dreaming of... #
0:04:14 > 0:04:17This song is definitely one of my favourites.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19'I think this is more of a rocky song
0:04:19 > 0:04:21'that we can all put our own spin on.'
0:04:21 > 0:04:24# She said, it's hard enough Trying to live your life... #
0:04:24 > 0:04:28I'm feeling great about this song and I do like The Script
0:04:28 > 0:04:31and they play the guitar, so I think it's my advantage.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35# You got one life To love what you do. #
0:04:37 > 0:04:40I can't wait to see three of you perform it in the sing-off.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43Good luck, guys. ALL: Bye!
0:04:43 > 0:04:45David Tench is one of the most experienced musicians
0:04:45 > 0:04:48in the business and has toured with stars
0:04:48 > 0:04:51including Kylie Minogue and Take That.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53OK, well, let's walk through it, like we always do.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56But he may be facing a tough session with the group today.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58So, Evan, you're up first.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00So you want to play this, right?
0:05:00 > 0:05:03# My head
0:05:03 > 0:05:09# My head is full of Things that I should've done... #
0:05:09 > 0:05:11Keep that tempo going.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13I think the song suited Evan really well
0:05:13 > 0:05:16and then not so much the other singers.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19# If you really have To think about it
0:05:19 > 0:05:21# Oh
0:05:21 > 0:05:25# You got one life To love what you do... #
0:05:25 > 0:05:28Yeah, yeah, that's great. Well done, well done.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31- OK, Lily, are you ready to take a turn?- Yeah.
0:05:31 > 0:05:32First, I can see in your eyes
0:05:32 > 0:05:35that this is your favourite song, isn't it?
0:05:35 > 0:05:38No, it's not. I just really don't like this song.
0:05:38 > 0:05:41- I can see why Evan likes this song because it's more him.- Yeah.
0:05:41 > 0:05:43But I don't think it's me.
0:05:45 > 0:05:5013-year-old Lily is a power ballad queen from Surrey.
0:05:50 > 0:05:52I started performing when I was three.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55I get inspiration from, like, other artists.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57# Can you be... #
0:05:57 > 0:06:01I love Jennifer Hudson. I love Whitney Houston.
0:06:01 > 0:06:06And hopefully one day, you know, my dream can become a reality
0:06:06 > 0:06:09because I just want to be a pop star.
0:06:09 > 0:06:11When she performed in the third sing-off,
0:06:11 > 0:06:15Lily made her mark singing her own ballad version of Riptide.
0:06:15 > 0:06:20# I got a lump in my throat because You're gonna sing the words wrong. #
0:06:22 > 0:06:24But she hasn't won a sing-off yet,
0:06:24 > 0:06:27- so the pressure is on to prove herself.- I'm very competitive.
0:06:27 > 0:06:31If you're not competitive, you're going to get nowhere.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34I think we come from a competitive family, don't we?
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Yeah, we're in it to win it. Yeah, definitely!
0:06:39 > 0:06:42- OK, Lily, are you ready to give it a go?- Yeah.
0:06:42 > 0:06:48# If you even Have to think about it
0:06:48 > 0:06:53# It's not right It's not right for you

0:07:01 > 0:07:05# You got one life To love what you do. #
0:07:06 > 0:07:08That's really good, Lily.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10A fantastic starting point for your style,
0:07:10 > 0:07:14but there's still opportunity for you to get longer notes in places
0:07:14 > 0:07:16and, sort of, suit your voice better.
0:07:16 > 0:07:19After a tough morning getting to grips with the new song,
0:07:19 > 0:07:22the singers are struggling to keep motivated.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24People were starting to yawn in the group.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27So the focus is not quite there like it was before.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29It's been quite intense because
0:07:29 > 0:07:31every day we are doing something different.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35It's very tiring, just like the music industry, and I keep yawning.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38Well, guys, you know, I know how hard it can be,
0:07:38 > 0:07:41but you've just got to renew your energy and power through to the end.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43Try and fight that sleepiness.
0:07:43 > 0:07:44Now is the time they need to dig in.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47There's an amazing opportunity at the end to perform
0:07:47 > 0:07:48at Radio 1's Big Weekend.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51We're halfway through and they're dropping down.
0:07:51 > 0:07:54That's not the way to do it. They've got to keep pushing.
0:07:56 > 0:08:00To make it in the music industry, you'll need loads of energy.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02But how much hard work is really involved?
0:08:02 > 0:08:05What's up? I'm OWS and you're watching
0:08:05 > 0:08:07Got What It Takes?
0:08:07 > 0:08:08My top tip for young singers trying
0:08:08 > 0:08:10to get in the music industry
0:08:10 > 0:08:12is work relentlessly hard on your craft.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14When you're like, I can't
0:08:14 > 0:08:15be bothered to record
0:08:15 > 0:08:17or I can't be bothered to write or practise,
0:08:17 > 0:08:20you have to catch yourself when you're doing it.
0:08:20 > 0:08:21You've got to put in the hours
0:08:21 > 0:08:22and the effort and time
0:08:22 > 0:08:24and just be 100% dedicated
0:08:24 > 0:08:27to what you do and never give up, really.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35Each episode, two end-of-show sing-off spots
0:08:35 > 0:08:37can be won in a music industry challenge.
0:08:37 > 0:08:41And it's time to find out what the group is facing this time.
0:08:44 > 0:08:45When it comes to the music industry,
0:08:45 > 0:08:48there's one thing that can really help or hinder your career -
0:08:48 > 0:08:49the media.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52The press can be a very tricky thing to deal with
0:08:52 > 0:08:54and in my career, I've had some real highs and lows.
0:08:54 > 0:08:58So for today's challenge we're going to be sending you over to Radio 1.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01- GASPING - Radio 1!
0:09:03 > 0:09:06Radio 1 is home to some of the biggest stars in the industry.
0:09:06 > 0:09:10But top musicians have to deal with the downside of success -
0:09:10 > 0:09:14lack of privacy, paparazzi and intrusive questions.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17And our young singers are about to experience this, too.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23We're at BBC London.
0:09:23 > 0:09:27Really excited because we've got Lola also doing the vlog.
0:09:27 > 0:09:28Hello.
0:09:29 > 0:09:32I can't wait to go inside and see what our challenge is actually
0:09:32 > 0:09:36going to be because we don't actually know what we're going to do yet.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40Producer Nadia Dunn has worked with lots of famous
0:09:40 > 0:09:43artists at Radio 1's Live Lounge.
0:09:43 > 0:09:47She's going to explain what's involved in today's challenge.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50So welcome to the Live Lounge. Are you excited?
0:09:50 > 0:09:54- ALL: Yeah!- Your challenge today is learning about the media,
0:09:54 > 0:09:57because in a moment, you're going to be interviewed by Radio 1's
0:09:57 > 0:10:00and CBBC's Cel Spellman!
0:10:02 > 0:10:05- ALL:- Ooh, wow!
0:10:05 > 0:10:08Judging today's challenge is someone who interviews music stars as part of his job.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10- How are you feeling, sir? - Scared, worried.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14TV presenter and Radio 1 DJ, Cel Spellman.
0:10:15 > 0:10:19But before they face Cel, they'll need some advice from Nadia.
0:10:19 > 0:10:23So, I'm going to give you a few tips, because it could be a tricky interview.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27It's important to keep eye contact with the person
0:10:27 > 0:10:30that's interviewing you. So, remember that. Keep looking.
0:10:30 > 0:10:31The other thing to remember
0:10:31 > 0:10:33is think before you speak.
0:10:33 > 0:10:35And if it gets too difficult, you can just say,
0:10:35 > 0:10:37"I'm not going to answer that."
0:10:37 > 0:10:40Also, don't forget to always be yourself as well.
0:10:40 > 0:10:42Because actually, people like you for who you are.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45Don't forget those tips and hopefully he won't catch you out.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47Let's get started!
0:10:48 > 0:10:52The singers will take it in turns to face a grilling from Cel.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55The two who most impress Cel and Nadia will get to perform
0:10:55 > 0:10:57in the end-of-show sing-off.
0:10:57 > 0:11:01This is one of the best challenges because you don't have to really...prepare yourself that much.
0:11:01 > 0:11:05- Yeah.- You've just got to walk in there and answer some questions. So, it may be difficult,
0:11:05 > 0:11:08- but it's only going to be in that short period of time. - I think nerves won't help this.
0:11:08 > 0:11:12I'm scared he's going to ask us something and we're supposed to...
0:11:12 > 0:11:15No, no, no, are we supposed to REFUSE to answer it,
0:11:15 > 0:11:17but we answer it? If you know what I mean?
0:11:19 > 0:11:20The wait is over.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24It's time to see how they cope under the media spotlight.
0:11:24 > 0:11:27- Hello, Rai-Elle.- Bonjour!- Bonjour? Very nice. How are you?
0:11:27 > 0:11:29I'm very fine, thank you. How are you?

0:11:37 > 0:11:39OK, first things first, Matt, what type of artist are you?
0:11:39 > 0:11:42- What's your style?- I think my style really would be alternative.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44I haven't got a type of style.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47I love every genre of mu... GENRE of music, sorry.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51I've got quite a powerful voice. Erm, I sing a lot of ballads.
0:11:51 > 0:11:55- Ten years' time, where do you see yourself?- I see myself in America.
0:11:55 > 0:12:00- Accompanied by Nicki Minaj.- So, I'll be interviewing you and Nicki Minaj?
0:12:00 > 0:12:03No problems so far... But how will they cope
0:12:03 > 0:12:06when Cel tries to dig a little deeper?
0:12:06 > 0:12:08As it is a competition, out of the group,
0:12:08 > 0:12:12who would you say your biggest competition is?
0:12:14 > 0:12:17I think... Ooh, that's a hard one.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20- Erm...- Erm, I wouldn't say.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23Everyone's got their own little styles and we're so different,
0:12:23 > 0:12:26but so similar.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29Hmm, I don't really want to answer that question.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32- So, you're spending a lot of time with your mum, aren't you?- Yeah.
0:12:32 > 0:12:37- Have you ever lied to your mum? - Oh, yeah.- Oh, straight up!
0:12:37 > 0:12:40- I'm not going to lie!- Ha! Not to me, I hope!- No, no.
0:12:40 > 0:12:44- I think, I think everyone lies, so, yes.- A little bit. Little white lie.
0:12:44 > 0:12:49- Yeah, definitely.- Have I ever lied to my mum? Yes.- And how often?
0:12:49 > 0:12:50Once a month?
0:12:52 > 0:12:54Couple a month, ten a month?
0:12:54 > 0:12:57- A couple a month. Five, six.- OK.
0:12:57 > 0:13:01With some of the group squirming under the spotlight,
0:13:01 > 0:13:04Cel tries to get an exclusive scoop on some juicy gossip.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07There's a lot of ladies out there. You being a handsome man and that...
0:13:07 > 0:13:12So, the question I'm going to ask you is, have you got a girlfriend?
0:13:12 > 0:13:15- No, I don't have a girlfriend. - There was a slight pause there.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18You had to think about it!
0:13:18 > 0:13:22Do I have a boyfriend? Erm, oh, gosh...

0:13:41 > 0:13:43I'm not into that kind of stuff at the moment.

0:13:46 > 0:13:51- you can wait.- Erm, well, I'm not saying no.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59# Is this the life you've been dreaming of
0:23:59 > 0:24:01# Spending all the day doing the things you love
0:24:01 > 0:24:05# It's not too late to do what you love. #
0:24:05 > 0:24:08The problem is with that getting that word wrong,
0:24:08 > 0:24:10you lose the sense of the song.
0:24:10 > 0:24:15It has to be "spending half the day away from the things you love,"
0:24:15 > 0:24:18not spending half the day doing the things you love.
0:24:18 > 0:24:19OK. Yeah, yeah.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34Lily's done a lot to change her song and I'm really proud
0:24:34 > 0:24:36of her for that. It sounds fantastic,
0:24:36 > 0:24:38but she's nervous about the lyrics.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41# If we stay here too long
0:24:41 > 0:24:44# Then we'll never grow old, so don't do... #
0:24:44 > 0:24:46Ah! Completely forgot them!
0:24:46 > 0:24:50- It's all right!- Before that, I knew all the words off by heart,
0:24:50 > 0:24:54and then as it got to the lesson, I just couldn't remember them.
0:24:54 > 0:24:56My mind went blank.
0:24:56 > 0:24:58Stressing me out.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01Paddy, take a deep breath, man, you're going to be absolutely fine.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04He was so worked up, he's got a great voice,
0:25:04 > 0:25:08and he's doing really well, as long as he can learn to control
0:25:08 > 0:25:12these nerves, because they're taking over him.
0:25:12 > 0:25:14# You say, is this the life that you've been dreaming of
0:25:14 > 0:25:17# Spending half the day without the things that you've... #
0:25:17 > 0:25:21Ah! I shouldn't do that. I can't do that!
0:25:21 > 0:25:24Keep going, keep going, keep going!
0:25:24 > 0:25:27I shouldn't have done that, I shouldn't have stopped.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30- I stopped singing and I stopped again.- Here's the thing, Paddy.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32You've just got to keep going through the song
0:25:32 > 0:25:34when you get to the stage.
0:25:34 > 0:25:37No matter what happens, don't stop in the middle of the song.
0:25:37 > 0:25:39I won't, I'll try my hardest not to.
0:25:39 > 0:25:44# My heart is heavy and it sinks like a stone... #
0:25:44 > 0:25:46Nice.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48# She said is this the life you've been dreaming of
0:25:48 > 0:25:50# It's been...
0:25:50 > 0:25:53- Is that too fast? Yeah. - It got too fast.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56When I was singing with David, I was quite embarrassed to sing
0:25:56 > 0:25:59the song, because I didn't really know it.
0:25:59 > 0:26:01You must keep that time.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03- In fact, I'll play this drum.- OK.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06# Is this the life you've been dreaming of... #
0:26:06 > 0:26:10Matt's session was great, but there was only one thing wrong
0:26:10 > 0:26:14and that was the timing. That's a very important lesson to learn.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17If you're on stage with a band,
0:26:17 > 0:26:20everybody needs to understand where the time is.
0:26:20 > 0:26:25# Oh, one life to love what you do. #
0:26:25 > 0:26:30- That sounded great. Matt! Give me a high-five.- Thanks.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31Mate, it sounds fantastic.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34The only thing is you have a tendency to rush, that's all.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36Hopefully when he goes out on the stage,
0:26:36 > 0:26:38everything will work perfectly.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46David has now done everything he can.
0:26:46 > 0:26:48It's time for the sing-off
0:26:48 > 0:26:51and I'm really, really excited about this one.
0:26:51 > 0:26:55Not all of them were very comfortable with the song to begin with
0:26:55 > 0:26:58and I want to see how all three of them have done it themselves.
0:26:58 > 0:27:02But backstage, the singers could do with some last-minute advice.
0:27:04 > 0:27:06I hear you're all very nervous about the words.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08- Yeah, very nervous. - Completely forgot them.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10I knew them about an hour ago - not any more.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13So are all three of you planning to take the words in with you?
0:27:13 > 0:27:15- ALL:- Yes.
0:27:15 > 0:27:18Right, OK. Do you think having your words with you could go
0:27:18 > 0:27:20- against you with the judging? - I think it could,
0:27:20 > 0:27:24but I'd rather get all the words right than forget them
0:27:24 > 0:27:28- and just stop. - If you can, just try and hold them
0:27:28 > 0:27:31next to you rather than up there the whole time.
0:27:33 > 0:27:37Each sing-off, the mums are the judges and will vote to decide
0:27:37 > 0:27:40which of the three performers wins.
0:27:40 > 0:27:43The person with the most wins after eight episodes
0:27:43 > 0:27:45will automatically qualify
0:27:45 > 0:27:46for the grand final.
0:27:46 > 0:27:49Paddy, Rai-Elle, Lola and Amaria
0:27:49 > 0:27:51currently have a win each.
0:27:51 > 0:27:55If Paddy wins today, it will put him in the lead.

0:31:27 > 0:31:29Matt's performance was really good.
0:31:29 > 0:31:32The only thing that let him down is looking down at the lyrics.
0:31:32 > 0:31:34So, last up is Paddy.
0:31:34 > 0:31:35APPLAUSE
0:31:35 > 0:31:39'In rehearsal, Paddy had a hard time with the lyrics.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:32:42 > 0:32:46Hello, Paddy. I think you had a couple of stumbles,
0:32:46 > 0:32:49but all me and anyone cared about is the fact that you carried on.
0:32:49 > 0:32:52- I'm really, really proud of you for that.- Thank you.
0:32:55 > 0:32:59Didn't go that well. I forgot my words, but, oh, well...
0:32:59 > 0:33:01I thought Paddy was so good with his performance,
0:33:01 > 0:33:05his stage presence. He kept amazing eye contact
0:33:05 > 0:33:08and he smiled the whole way through even when he stumbled on his words.
0:33:08 > 0:33:10So, guys, time to get voting.
0:33:12 > 0:33:14It wasn't the best sing-off that we've had,
0:33:14 > 0:33:16everybody did do good performances in the end,
0:33:16 > 0:33:18but holding those words really held them back.
0:33:18 > 0:33:21I just think they should have put more effort
0:33:21 > 0:33:23into getting those words down.
0:33:23 > 0:33:27It's so important in this industry to be able to pick up lyrics
0:33:27 > 0:33:29and learn songs really quickly.
0:33:29 > 0:33:33I know in the past, I've had 20 minutes to learn a new song.
0:33:33 > 0:33:36So, I know this was a little bit of a tough time for you guys,
0:33:36 > 0:33:39you all struggled a little bit with the lyrics.
0:33:39 > 0:33:42However, one person does need to win.
0:33:42 > 0:33:45Today, the person with the most votes is...
0:33:53 > 0:33:54..Matt.
0:33:54 > 0:33:58APPLAUSE
0:33:58 > 0:34:01I thought Matt's performance this time was absolutely fantastic.
0:34:01 > 0:34:05In our rehearsal, the problem that we had was timing, but he did listen
0:34:05 > 0:34:09to me and he did perform really well, and in time, and he won.
0:34:09 > 0:34:13I didn't think I'd win the sing-off, so it's a massive shock to me.
0:34:13 > 0:34:16That's why I got a bit emotional about it.
0:34:16 > 0:34:18There are only three sing-offs left now.
0:34:18 > 0:34:21And I really think everybody needs to step up.
0:34:21 > 0:34:22I think we've had our dip,
0:34:22 > 0:34:25and now we need to come out of it and get the energy back up.
0:34:25 > 0:34:29It's very important now that people give it their best shot.
0:34:33 > 0:34:34Next time...
0:34:34 > 0:34:39SHE VOCALISES
0:34:39 > 0:34:41Keep going, keep going!
0:34:41 > 0:34:43What do you think about that feeling you get
0:34:43 > 0:34:45when you know you've got it down?
0:34:45 > 0:34:46You feel like you can fly!
0:34:46 > 0:34:48That's what I feel like I can do. I can do anything.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01# Oh-oh-oh
0:35:01 > 0:35:04# If you really have to think about it
