0:01:18 > 0:01:23- Welcome to the Green Balloon Club.- It may be February and it may be cold,

0:01:23 > 0:01:27but we've definitely spotted signs of spring on its way.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30It's lighter in the mornings when we walk Skipper.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34And I spotted some snowdrops and I got a green star.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Oh, well done, Lily-Rose!

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Yes, the snowdrop was a Spot a few weeks ago.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Did you spot some too?

0:01:42 > 0:01:45I've been looking for bugs, but I haven't seen many.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48They're probably still hibernating.

0:01:48 > 0:01:53But I've definitely seen some bird activity in my garden. In fact,

0:01:53 > 0:01:58- two robins have used my bird feeder. - Oh! Don't robins like to be alone?

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Usually, but if two are together,

0:02:01 > 0:02:05it's often because they're preparing a nest for a family.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09- Oh, that's definitely a sign of spring.- Yes, that's right.

0:02:09 > 0:02:14- Should we do the register?- Yes, yes, definitely. You do it, Ant.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20First up, Lily-Rose?

0:02:22 > 0:02:25BOING! I'm here!

0:02:25 > 0:02:29Are you feeling bouncy today, Lily-Rose?

0:02:29 > 0:02:32No, that wasn't a bounce,

0:02:32 > 0:02:33that was a spring! BOING!

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Spring is another word for jump.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40- I'm feeling springy cos spring is nearly here.- That's good.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Who else is here?

0:02:42 > 0:02:45- Are you feeling springy too, Ant? - Oh, why not?

0:02:45 > 0:02:51- BOING! - I'm here, and I'm feeling springy.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Now it's you, Cat.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56BOING! I'm here!

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Cat's here. What about you, Skipper?

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Skipper's feeling springy too. BOING!

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Good girl!

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Skipper's here.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Now it's you, Jay.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14- I'm definitely feeling springy. - BOING!

0:03:14 > 0:03:17- BOING! BOING! - I'm here!

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Jay's here and feeling springy.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Now it's you, Sky.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Oh, well, I think I'm here.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- And I'm feeling springy! - BOING!

0:03:27 > 0:03:31- Not as springy as me! - Oh, I think I'm springier.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35BOING! BOING! BOING! BOING!

0:03:35 > 0:03:40And what about you? Are you feeling springy?

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Join in with us.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44BOING!

0:03:44 > 0:03:46ALL: I'm here!

0:03:47 > 0:03:50And that's everyone present and correct.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Let's do the Green Balloon Club chant!

0:03:52 > 0:03:55ALL: Yay!

0:03:55 > 0:03:57DRUMBEAT

0:04:00 > 0:04:04ALL: We love animals, plants and birds.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06We love snails and slugs.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10Large and small, we love them all and we never, ever step on bugs

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Cos we are the Green Balloon Club!

0:04:15 > 0:04:19Sky, I've got another sign for spring. Come and have a look.

0:04:19 > 0:04:25- Wow! What's this, Lily-Rose? - It's a hyacinth.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29I got it for Christmas. At first, it didn't do anything,

0:04:29 > 0:04:32but look under here.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34That looks like some roots in there.

0:04:34 > 0:04:39Yes, that's what they are. The roots go down and the shoots are coming up.

0:04:39 > 0:04:45- That's fantastic, isn't it?- I think it will grow into a big, blue flower.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48I'll bring it in when it grows some more.

0:04:48 > 0:04:53I've brought something special too. It's another sign of spring.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57- It looks like some sort of box to me. - That's right. It's a bird box -

0:04:57 > 0:05:02- a special house for the birds.- But I thought bird boxes looked like that,

0:05:02 > 0:05:04with a little round hole.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08Usually, yes. But this is a special box for the robins.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12Robins don't like to be closed in, so they choose open fronts.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17- But how do you get them to go in there?- Well, you can't make them.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20But now's the time to put up a bird box

0:05:20 > 0:05:24because birds are looking for places to build their nests now.

0:05:24 > 0:05:29- So you just put it up and hope they come and live in there?- Yes.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Or perhaps some other birds will come and live in it.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36There's a report coming in.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Hello! Hello! Hello! Down here!

0:05:39 > 0:05:41It's Molly. Hello!

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Hello. This is my garden,

0:05:44 > 0:05:46and it's the time of year

0:05:46 > 0:05:50when birds think about pairing up and having a family.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56First, they need to find somewhere to nest, and we can help them do that.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01Different birds like living in different nest boxes,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03so we have two types to put up.

0:06:03 > 0:06:09One box has a small hole, and the other has an open front.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13This box is for small birds called wrens.

0:06:13 > 0:06:19And robins like to nest in open-front boxes like this one.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23Maybe they like to be able to see everything.

0:06:26 > 0:06:31We're putting the bird boxes up and my dad's helping us, cos he's tall.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35Molly, maybe we should put it here.

0:06:35 > 0:06:40No, it has to be off the ground, away from animals like cats and squirrels.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43They get inside the boxes and steal the eggs.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46OK, Molly, how about up here, like that?

0:06:46 > 0:06:50No, it has to keep the rain out and be facing away from direct sunlight.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53How about up here?

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Do you think it's a good place?

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Yes, it is, cos it's out of the sun and rain

0:07:00 > 0:07:03and away from cats and squirrels.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08Robins like to nest with plants all around them, so we'll put it here.

0:07:11 > 0:07:16Make sure you don't put nest boxes close to each other.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19Different birds like to live in different places,

0:07:19 > 0:07:22and robins prefer to live on their own.

0:07:22 > 0:07:27To help the birds make their nest, I'm going to put this nest helper up.

0:07:27 > 0:07:33It's full of natural material and the birds use bits for their nests.

0:07:33 > 0:07:38Robins like to use twigs, dry grass and moss for their nests,

0:07:38 > 0:07:43so we're going to find some and put them near the box for them to use.

0:07:47 > 0:07:52Wrens like to line their nests with feathers, so if we find any,

0:07:52 > 0:07:54we'll add them to the nest helper.

0:07:58 > 0:08:03If you have pets, you could use their fur as well.

0:08:03 > 0:08:08If I was a bird, I'd love to have rabbit fur in my nest.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11We can't wait for some birds to move in.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Hopefully, we can watch them have a family.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18Maybe you can put some boxes up in your garden. Bye!

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Bye!

0:08:21 > 0:08:24That was great! Thanks, Molly.

0:08:24 > 0:08:29See? Everyone's getting into bird boxes at this time of year.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33Is there somewhere that you could put up a bird box?

0:08:33 > 0:08:37Jay! Which sort of bird goes in this sort of box?

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Lots of birds like this kind of box.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41Any of these ones?

0:08:41 > 0:08:44If you're lucky, you might get a sparrow,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47but they're not very common where I live.

0:08:47 > 0:08:52You're much more likely to see a blue tit, like this one.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55Blue tits are very cheeky little birds.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59If you have a bird feeder, you'll probably see one on it.

0:09:02 > 0:09:07Just look at this colourful little acrobat feeding on the bird feeder.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09But who is it?

0:09:10 > 0:09:13I'm a blue tit.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17I have beautiful blue, green and yellow feathers

0:09:17 > 0:09:19and a cheeky stripy face.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Although I'm small, I can see off other birds that try and push in.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27I'm so light that I can feed from the thinnest of branches

0:09:27 > 0:09:29where other birds can't reach.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32It's spring.

0:09:32 > 0:09:37I'm busy collecting moss and lots of soft bedding to line my nest.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41At this time of year, I lay as many as 16 eggs

0:09:41 > 0:09:44that hatch into blue tit hatchlings.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51Look how tiny my hatchlings are. Luckily, I have help from their dad,

0:09:51 > 0:09:55who collects lots of juicy caterpillars to eat.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58We time the arrival of our chicks

0:09:58 > 0:10:01when there are the most caterpillars around.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05That doesn't fool me!

0:10:06 > 0:10:10At two weeks old, our chicks are fully feathered,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12with wide yellow beaks.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18Whilst the chicks are in the nest, we have to be careful,

0:10:18 > 0:10:22since there are lots of animals that would eat our chicks.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24We have to be on high alert with cats...

0:10:24 > 0:10:29squirrels and woodpeckers around.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Uh-oh!

0:10:36 > 0:10:39False alarm - it's a field mouse.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41All clear.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46At three weeks old, our chicks are ready to leave the nest box.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50Look how I try to tempt them out with a tasty morsel of food.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57There - all the chicks have flown

0:10:57 > 0:10:58from the nest.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03Both their dad and I spend a couple of weeks or so feeding the chicks

0:11:03 > 0:11:08and looking after them. But it's not long before all our baby blue tits

0:11:08 > 0:11:10fend for themselves.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12You can attract blue tits just like me

0:11:12 > 0:11:17into the garden, or by your window, by putting out a bird feeder.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21We're often the first birds on the bird feeders,

0:11:21 > 0:11:24so look out for us colourful little acrobats.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33Lily-Rose, what are you doing?

0:11:33 > 0:11:37Me and Skipper are trying to see if we can see my hyacinth growing.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Let's see.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Hmm! It's not doing anything.

0:11:41 > 0:11:47It must be, because at first there weren't any roots, neither shoots

0:11:47 > 0:11:51but now there are roots AND shoots so it MUST be growing!

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Well, very, very slowly.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Yes. And me and Skipper will try and see if we could SEE it growing.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- And could you?- No.

0:11:59 > 0:12:00But Skipper could.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02She's SO clever.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- Yes, she is, isn't she? - SKY CLEARS THROAT >

0:12:05 > 0:12:10Guys, would you mind if I interrupt with playing a game?

0:12:10 > 0:12:13BOTH: Yes, please! What is it?

0:12:13 > 0:12:17It's a game about animals' homes. You match the animal to the home.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Do you think you can do it?

0:12:19 > 0:12:21- BOTH: Yes.- OK. First,

0:12:21 > 0:12:25I'm going to put some animals here. That's a squirrel.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- ALL:- Badger.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- Who's this?- BOTH: Skipper.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32SKIPPER WHINES BOTH: Bee.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36- BOTH: Kingfisher! - Lovely.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39Right, so I'm going to put some homes over here.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47OK, which animal is this?

0:12:47 > 0:12:51- Badger.- OK. And where do you think the badger lives?

0:12:51 > 0:12:55- There.- In there? OK, put those two together.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Right, now, how about...

0:13:01 > 0:13:05- this animal here?- BOTH: A bee. - Where do you think the bee lives?

0:13:05 > 0:13:10- BOTH: The beehive.- OK, we'll put those together. And next up...

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- this animal.- A squirrel. - Where do you think it lives?

0:13:13 > 0:13:16- In the nest.- In this nest over here?

0:13:16 > 0:13:20- It's kind of a nest. It's called a drey.- A drey.- Yes.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22We'll put those together.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25And, then, what about Skipper?

0:13:25 > 0:13:28- BOTH: The kennel.- The kennel?

0:13:28 > 0:13:32That's a really good guess. We'll put that together.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34And what about this animal?

0:13:34 > 0:13:36- A kingfisher.- It is.

0:13:36 > 0:13:41- And where do you think the kingfisher lives?- There!- OK.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45- What do you think this is?- A burrow. - Do you think this is a burrow.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48- No, a sett!- You think it's a sett?

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Ok, yes, you're right, this is a sett. So who lives in a sett?

0:13:52 > 0:13:54BOTH: A badger!

0:13:54 > 0:13:59So you got that one wrong. We'll put the badger over here in the sett.

0:13:59 > 0:14:04So we're left here with this over here. What is this?

0:14:04 > 0:14:06- A river.- A river.- It is a river.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09- See this hole?- Yes. - It's actually a burrow.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13That's funny. I thought rabbits lived in burrows.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16That's right. Rabbits do live in burrows

0:14:16 > 0:14:19but kingfishers live in tiny burrows, too.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21'Report! Special report!'

0:14:21 > 0:14:25There's Jelly! What has she got for us today?

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Hello there. This is special reporter Jelly

0:15:18 > 0:15:21- Build a house.- Build them a house?

0:15:21 > 0:15:26That is called a wormery. I don't know how to do that. Do you know?

0:15:26 > 0:15:30- Yes.- Oh, will you show me?- Yes.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33Well, come on then, let's go!

0:15:39 > 0:15:41BOTH: Hello, Jelly.

0:15:41 > 0:15:46Now that Sam and I have found some worms, what do we have to do next?

0:15:46 > 0:15:47Soil.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49We need to put in some soil?

0:15:49 > 0:15:52Is that some soil from the garden?

0:15:52 > 0:15:54It is. It's from our garden.

0:15:54 > 0:15:59Worms like wriggling and wiggling around in the mud, don't they,

0:15:59 > 0:16:00under the ground?

0:16:00 > 0:16:03And what have you got there, Sam?

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Oh, brilliant,

0:16:12 > 0:16:16because worms like to stay nice and wet in the mud.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Yes, you do the water.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22Sprinkle. Sprinkle.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25- Is it time to put them in?- Yes.

0:16:25 > 0:16:30Oh, look! The worms are going in to their new home!

0:16:30 > 0:16:33- Shall we put the leaves on?- Yes.
