0:03:56 > 0:04:00Lily-Rose, you should draw a picture of your hyacinth for the scrapbook.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03I will. I wish I could put the smell in it.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07- I've found something to draw for the scrapbook.- What is it?

0:04:07 > 0:04:11It's a ladybird. It's the first one I've seen all year.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15They must be starting to come out of hibernation.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17TRUMPET BURST

0:04:17 > 0:04:19It looks like we've got a report coming in.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24There's the Green Balloon! Hello!

0:04:24 > 0:04:29Oh, yes! It's Melika, Centine, and Zara. Hello, down there!

0:04:29 > 0:04:34- ALL: Hello!- It's the time of year when there are blossoms on the tree.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38- And the first leaves start to bud. - Come and see!

0:04:41 > 0:04:47By looking at the shape of the buds, we can work out what trees they are.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51- What's this tree?- Look at the buds.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54- Blackthorn?- No.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55- Beech?- No.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59It's tricky to work out which tree it is.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03There's two growing at each side. By-two, by-two, by-two!

0:05:03 > 0:05:06And there's one in the middle, at the top.

0:05:06 > 0:05:11- So this one is a sycamore. - Let's go and find some more trees.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17This one has got red and green.

0:05:17 > 0:05:22- And it looks like it snows on the green.- And it has "sprouches",

0:05:22 > 0:05:25and there's only one on it, not two.

0:05:25 > 0:05:30- So this one is a...- Crab apple!

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Let's go to the next one.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43- This is kinda spiky. - It's like a blossom.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47And it has...these are white and the buds are round.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49All in favour?

0:05:49 > 0:05:52We think it's blackthorn.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Yeah? Is that lavender?

0:05:59 > 0:06:06The little bud is white and fluffy, so it must be the same as this one.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08TOGETHER: It's an elder tree!

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Hey! These have got green bobs on them.

0:06:19 > 0:06:26OK, this one looks like there's lots of leaves, some covering each other.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29They're green, and spiking out.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32It could be common hawthorn.

0:06:32 > 0:06:39Why don't you see which trees you can find where you live?

0:06:40 > 0:06:42ALL: Bye!

0:06:42 > 0:06:43ALL: Bye!

0:06:43 > 0:06:44ALL: Bye!

0:06:44 > 0:06:49Bye! Thanks for showing us those!

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Sky, do you know anything about seeds?

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Oh, well, a little bit. What do you want to know?

0:06:55 > 0:07:02- Well, my fruit seed experiment isn't growing.- Right, OK.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06How come some of them have pictures on the front and some don't?

0:07:06 > 0:07:10- I left them out in the rain. - That's probably the reason

0:07:10 > 0:07:14why they haven't come out yet. They probably stayed in the soil

0:07:14 > 0:07:18to keep nice and warm because it's been really cold recently.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22Now it's spring we'll put them outside so they can grow.

0:07:22 > 0:07:27- I'll look in the balloon to see if we can find some seeds.- Thanks!

0:07:57 > 0:08:02I've got a wheelbarrow, I'd better go and catch up with my friends.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06This is the kitchen garden, but you don't grow things here

0:08:06 > 0:08:11you need for the kitchen, like the kitchen sink and pots and pans. No!

0:08:15 > 0:08:19- This is our team of gardeners, aren't we, people?- Yes!

0:08:31 > 0:08:33That's good, keep going.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37This is where we're going to do our planting.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40First we have to dig a hole because we're going to plant

0:08:40 > 0:08:44- something in it, but what are we going to plant?- Potatoes.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Oh! T-t-tobatoes?

0:08:54 > 0:08:58We've got such a fantastic hole, we're ready to plant them.

0:08:58 > 0:09:03- They look like real potatoes already.- They're seed potatoes.

0:09:03 > 0:09:08We've put them out to "chit" - they start growing these little shoots.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11I'll go see what's happening in the greenhouse.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21Hello, everybody!

0:09:21 > 0:09:24All: Hello!

0:09:24 > 0:09:26- What are we all doing in here?

0:09:26 > 0:09:34- I'm planting some peas... - OK, and boys, what are you planting?

0:09:34 > 0:09:35BOYS: Spinach!

0:09:35 > 0:09:39What are you doing at the moment, girls?

0:09:39 > 0:09:44- We're putting the compost into the pipe.- Boys, what are you doing?

0:09:44 > 0:09:49We have to put the dibber into the tray,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52then take it out and then you see some holes.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54It's time to plan the seeds!

0:09:54 > 0:09:58The best bit. Girls, do you want to get your peas?

0:09:58 > 0:10:03And boys, do you want to start planting your spinach?

0:10:07 > 0:10:10And then do you know what we need to do?

0:10:10 > 0:10:13- All: Water them! - Water them, that's right.

0:10:13 > 0:10:14I've got to go now,

0:10:14 > 0:10:19but thank you very much for inviting me to help you. Bye bye!

0:10:19 > 0:10:20ALL: Bye!

0:10:20 > 0:10:23This is special reporter, Jelly,

0:10:23 > 0:10:26reporting for the Green Balloon Club.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28I've had so much fun gardening today.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32Back to you in the balloon. Up, up and away!

0:10:44 > 0:10:47Ant, how many legs does a ladybird have?

0:10:47 > 0:10:51Ladybirds are beetles, and beetles always have six legs.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53- So six legs.- One,

0:10:53 > 0:10:55two,

0:10:55 > 0:10:57three,

0:10:57 > 0:10:58four,

0:10:58 > 0:11:00five,

0:11:00 > 0:11:04six legs. How many spots does a ladybird have?

0:11:04 > 0:11:07It depends on what kind of ladybird it is.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12We have about 40 different kinds of ladybirds in this country,

0:11:12 > 0:11:17and this ladybird has two spots, so one on each side.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29There. It looks great.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33If you look, it looks just like a ladybird.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Oh, yes, it's got antennae.

0:11:38 > 0:11:39There.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41It looks even better!

0:11:46 > 0:11:50You don't have to go far in your garden or your park to find me.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54When Spring arrives and it starts to warm up,

0:11:54 > 0:11:58we start to wake up from the cold.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02I'm a ladybird, and I have a distinctive red body

0:12:02 > 0:12:04and little black spots.

0:12:04 > 0:12:09My bright colours are a warning to predators that I taste nasty.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12That's why birds and most animals don't eat me.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14I'm an armour-plated bug.

0:12:14 > 0:12:19And just like other beetles, I can fly away home.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23If I land on you, I won't bite, I'm harmless, you know.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28I'm known as the gardener's friend, as I eat garden pests.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Aphids are pests as they destroy garden plants.

0:12:34 > 0:12:39They breed so quickly, and there's so many of them. Every summer

0:12:39 > 0:12:43there's an epic bug battle between us ladybirds and aphids.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Aphids are really my favourite grub.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57But as fast as I can munch them up, more of them are produced.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01I can eat as many as 30 aphids in one day.

0:13:09 > 0:13:14As summer becomes autumn, I have to find a warm place to fly away to,

0:13:14 > 0:13:17and sit out the winter.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26You can help me and other ladybirds by putting up

0:13:26 > 0:13:31a comfy home in your garden to keep us nice and warm in the winter.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35So bye for now, look out for me in spring!

0:13:41 > 0:13:46If you're doing any gardening, remember to look out for ladybirds,

0:13:46 > 0:13:51because they're really good to have in your garden.

0:13:51 > 0:13:57Look! We've got a ladybird on our website this week.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59We've got a ladybird, or a hyacinth,

0:13:59 > 0:14:04for this week's secret picture password. Which one shall I choose?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I think Ant would choose the ladybird,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10but Lily-Rose would choose the hyacinth.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Which one would you choose?

0:14:15 > 0:14:19I think I'll choose the hyacinth because it smells so nice.

0:14:21 > 0:14:22Yes!

0:14:22 > 0:14:26So remember, if you're going on our website this week,

0:14:26 > 0:14:31the secret picture password is the hyacinth. Now we're in,

0:14:31 > 0:14:36I want to have a look through the telescope.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36I really like this. Here we go!

0:14:36 > 0:14:41Shall we choose the city or the woodland?

0:14:41 > 0:14:44I think I'll choose the woodland.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48Now we've got to choose autumn or winter.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50Which shall we go for?

0:14:50 > 0:14:54I think I'd like to see what it looks like in autumn.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Ooh! That's lovely! Look at all the autumn leaves.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00Let's have a look around.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02There are some things that light up!

0:15:02 > 0:15:06Watch what happens when I click on them.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16Jay! Come and look, Sky's got some new seeds for a new experiment.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20What seeds have you got there, Lily-Rose?

0:15:20 > 0:15:23I've got runner bean seeds. Aren't they pretty?

0:15:23 > 0:15:26They are. Can you give one out to everyone?

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Try and guess what these are.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32- Kidney beans.- Runner beans? - Right! Everyone take one.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35- We can't grow them.- Why not?

0:15:35 > 0:15:39- Because they're food. - That's right, they are food

0:15:39 > 0:15:43but they're also seeds, so we could plant a kidney bean

0:15:43 > 0:15:47and a runner bean and see which one would grow best.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49Everyone's got a cup, and a paper towel.

0:15:49 > 0:15:54Great. What you've got to do first is fold them in half.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58Everyone fold them. Lovely!

0:15:59 > 0:16:06Next, what we've got to do is grab a little bit of this paper,

0:16:06 > 0:16:09which is all shredded,

0:16:09 > 0:16:14and place it in the middle of your folded pieces of tissue paper.

0:16:14 > 0:16:19What we've got to do next is make a bit of a Swiss roll, OK?

0:16:19 > 0:16:23Just give it a roll from the corners and the sides

0:16:23 > 0:16:27so that all the paper goes in the middle.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30Next we've got to get our cups and put them inside,

0:16:30 > 0:16:34let them kind of release... I think some of you

0:16:34 > 0:16:38need to put a bit more of this paper in the top to fill it up.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40That's brilliant.

0:16:40 > 0:16:46Next, we we take our runner bean and put it down the side of the cup,

0:16:46 > 0:16:51then take a pencil and use the blunt end to push the seeds down

0:16:51 > 0:16:53quite near the bottom.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56- Ok, is everyone there? - Yes,- yes.- Lovely!

0:16:56 > 0:17:00Now take your kidney bean and put it on the opposite side,

0:17:00 > 0:17:05so if your runner bean's there, put the kidney bean on the other side.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09Lovely! I think we need to move ours a bit there.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12We've got the kidney bean on one side

0:17:12 > 0:17:14and the runner bean on the other.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17To make our seeds grow, what do we need?

0:17:17 > 0:17:20Water!

0:17:20 > 0:17:24Yes, so first of all, Cat, you put your cup over here on the tray

0:17:24 > 0:17:27then pour some water in. Be careful.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29I'll tell you when to stop.

0:17:31 > 0:17:32Stop!

0:17:32 > 0:17:35Well done. Next up is Jay.

0:17:42 > 0:17:43Stop!

0:17:43 > 0:17:45OK. Lily-Rose.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53We've got to stop, we've got to have some water for Ant.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Can you see how it's soaking it all up? Great, isn't it?

0:18:00 > 0:18:06Stop! What we've got to do next is make a fist with our hand,

0:18:06 > 0:18:10then we've got to place it over the cup like this

0:18:10 > 0:18:14then we've got to pour the extra water back inside the jug.

0:18:14 > 0:18:18- Go first, Lily-Rose, are you ready? - Yep!- OK, let's hold that.

0:18:18 > 0:18:22Just a little bit is coming out.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25- OK, who'd like to go next? - Me!- Me!- Me!

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Go on, Ant.
