0:01:27 > 0:01:30to learn the martial art, karate.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35But why did they choose to make this epic 6,000-mile journey

0:01:35 > 0:01:39to learn this ancient fighting discipline?

0:01:40 > 0:01:44There's street dancer, Chloe, who reckons her mum needs to lighten up.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47My mum is dull. She needs to chillax a little bit.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07that ballet dancing isn't just for girls.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10I wouldn't class ballet as a sport. It's not that exerting.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14We're spending three weeks together, me and my dad. I'll prove him wrong.

0:02:15 > 0:02:16And artist Phoebe,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22I'd find it hard to say who's the boss out of the two of us.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24He is like one big kid.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26It would be great if my dad came back more like an adult.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28You were awesome!

0:02:28 > 0:02:32Under the guidance of Grand Master Higaonna and his assistants,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34the Senseis, Brent and Kuramoto,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37the families are training hard to learn a routine in time

0:02:37 > 0:02:40for the World karate Tournament.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44Last time, the kids let down the Grand Master with their behaviour.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48They took on their first opponent...

0:02:48 > 0:02:49in the chicken dojo.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52And the adults proved that they didn't have the X-factor.

0:02:52 > 0:02:57But when it comes to karate, does Britain have talent?

0:03:03 > 0:03:07The families are halfway through their time in Japan.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Brent tells the Grand Master how hard the group have been training.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15To reward their commitment, they hatch a plan to give them a day off.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Or at least, that's what they're supposed to think...

0:03:20 > 0:03:23At breakfast, Brent tells them the good news.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24We're going on an adventure.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26For two days.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Ohh!

0:03:28 > 0:03:31You've got 10 minutes to go pack your bags.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Where are we going?

0:03:33 > 0:03:35- Bring what you think you need. - A suitcase!

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Think quick, 10 minutes, off you go!

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Pyjamas, Chloe. Need pyjamas.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49- We've got to take your medicines. - Shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops...

0:03:49 > 0:03:51What facial stuff do you need?

0:03:51 > 0:03:53They may have 10 minutes to pack,

0:03:53 > 0:03:56but they are excited about getting a break from training.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58I think this is a well-timed treat.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Because we've been... working very hard.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04I don't really feel like doing any practice.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08I feel like we just need a day to just chill out.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12You kids need to run around and scream and have some fun.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15The only one who wants to carry on training is Mikey.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Mikey's going through the kata with Brent.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Brent asked me how he's been practising.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24He was practising on a bus, did a couple of moves yesterday.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27He's seen the light by just doing the moves.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30It's clicked for Mikey, what's it was all about.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Mikey has started to work hard on his karate,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36but his dad is still struggling.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40I think he's not trying 100%.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44- Ah, no!- Mikey hasn't won a single challenge yet.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Unless they improve the way they talk to each other...

0:04:47 > 0:04:49We are awful communicators.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52..they won't get anything out of their time together in Japan.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59As they board the ferry to leave Okinawa,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02the families have no idea where they are going.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Drowning dogs. Do the drowning dogs again.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08And with no Senseis around, they slip into holiday mode.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15The Grand Master is sending them to a tiny island called Ieshima,

0:05:15 > 0:05:1727km north of Okinawa.

0:05:17 > 0:05:22This Japanese island was the birthplace of an ancient king,

0:05:22 > 0:05:26who's believed to have strength and fighting spirit by the bucket load.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29These values are still celebrated on the island today.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Just because there's no karate, doesn't mean it's a day off.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35The Grand Master sent them to learn what it really means

0:05:35 > 0:05:37to have fighting spirit.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Brent has been told to let the group

0:05:42 > 0:05:45fend for themselves for a day, to see how they get on.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50They've got to get a bit more into the culture.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53They're here so they should be trying to be part of that culture,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56rather than force their culture onto everyone else.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59It's sink or swim time for the families.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03By helping the islanders prepare for their annual festival,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06they'll have to get involved in the local culture.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Thank you, Japan!

0:06:15 > 0:06:18With Brent gone, they begin to explore.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24What they don't know, is that joining in with the festival will help their karate.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32But at the moment, everything seems a bit confusing.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37What are they trying to do?

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Rope, rope building.

0:06:39 > 0:06:40- A dragon.- That's straw.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44- That's a dragon, that is.- A dragon? What for?- Um, I don't know.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46It's got to be a dragon.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51They haven't got a clue what's going on.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53So they try and get some answers...

0:06:53 > 0:06:56What have you been making?

0:06:59 > 0:07:00Is it tug-of-war?

0:07:00 > 0:07:04It's a thing to do with karate, everyone on the street builds one.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07It's two teams, and they fight against each other.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13OK...

0:07:13 > 0:07:15We think it's a dragon thingy.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19There's definitely one in the other street.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21It's got to be like a dragon thing.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24It's a bit of a mystery, hard to work it out.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28We've been here two hours, and no-one's worked out what's happening.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32- OK, Paul, what's happening?- Ain't got a clue! I'm none the wiser!

0:07:32 > 0:07:33High five.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39And finally, the penny drops.

0:07:39 > 0:07:40Ah! Tug-of-war!

0:07:44 > 0:07:49Guys! It's a tug-of-war. They're making something for a tug-of-war.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53Using her best Japanese, Sandra asks a local why they have a festival.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Why do you have a festival?

0:07:56 > 0:08:00Uh, we...celebrate...the rice...

0:08:00 > 0:08:02- The rice...harvest?- Harvest, yes!

0:08:04 > 0:08:08What happens after? What other celebrations do you have?

0:08:08 > 0:08:13SHE SPEAKS JAPANESE

0:08:13 > 0:08:15- Japanese wrestling. - Oh, sumo wrestling!

0:08:17 > 0:08:21Yeah, sumo wrestling. Ooh, we are doing karate.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23- Ahh!- Yes.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Sandra may be good at communicating with actions,

0:08:26 > 0:08:29but her Japanese is no better than when she arrived in Kyoto.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32- What's the word for "hello"? - Konnichiwa.

0:08:32 > 0:08:33Konnichiwa.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36My Japanese is terrible. They keep teaching me the same word

0:08:36 > 0:08:38over and over again, and I keep forgetting.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40- Arigato.- Arigato.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Arigato. Sayonara.

0:08:42 > 0:08:43- Sayonara.- Sayonara.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47The harvest festival happens once a year, with the north of the island

0:08:47 > 0:08:49battling the south, in a giant tug-of-war.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52The rope is made of rice straw.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55It's a tradition that started over 400 years ago,

0:08:55 > 0:08:58and was introduced by the ancient king.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03So, it looks like the Grand Master's plan is starting to work,

0:09:03 > 0:09:05as the group are drawn in to life on the island.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07If you can't beat them, join them.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09# Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese

0:09:09 > 0:09:13# I really think so Turning Japanese... #

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Meeting visitors from the other side of the world

0:09:15 > 0:09:17is an unusual event for the islanders too.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21If you don't speak the language, the best way to communicate

0:09:21 > 0:09:26is by smiling, laughing and dancing badly.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32TRUMPET PLAYS

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Oh, this is heavy!

0:09:41 > 0:09:43# ...I really think so think so, think so, think so

0:09:43 > 0:09:46# Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese

0:09:46 > 0:09:48# I really think so. #

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Festival time approaches,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02and Chloe and Jedd are getting into the party spirit.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09CHEERING

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Yeah.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16No more!

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I don't know, losing to a girl.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20Oh, Daddy, honestly!

0:10:20 > 0:10:23It's not any old girl, it's MY girl.

0:10:23 > 0:10:24That was unfair...

0:10:24 > 0:10:27She's taller! And stronger.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33As the kids are busy showing off,

0:10:33 > 0:10:36they have no idea what's happening behind them...

0:10:36 > 0:10:38THEY SING IN JAPANESE

0:10:42 > 0:10:47The north and south of the island advance towards each other.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50And our families are stuck bang in the middle.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03The festival happens every year, and is a time for everyone on the island

0:11:03 > 0:11:05to get together, and join in the fun.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11I've never seen anything like this in my life.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Surrounded by thousands of crazy Japanese festival goers,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17this seems like as good a time as any to get involved.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25And the crowd tries to lend them a helping hand.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Mark and Joe get sucked into the action,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33and get a great view of a new sport.

0:11:33 > 0:11:38Bare-chested men, wrestling on planks of wood, in mid-air.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47Strength and fighting spirit are valued above everything else.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51And the young men of the island must prove that they have what it takes.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54They're so...so strong.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00Makes us realise how far we've got to go in karate, to match that.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03The families weren't expecting anything like this.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06When we look at the karate master, we can see what raw power is.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10But these guys, these guys are young and they've got raw power.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12They may have had a day off from karate,

0:12:12 > 0:12:17but they're getting a crash course in strength and fighting spirit.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19It's time for the tug-of-war

0:12:19 > 0:12:21as the north takes on the south of the island.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Inspired by the courage of the wrestlers,

0:12:24 > 0:12:27our families get right in the action.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31THEY SPEAK JAPANESE

0:12:38 > 0:12:39CHEERING

0:12:40 > 0:12:45The annual tradition of the giant tug-of-war used to be a royal event,

0:12:45 > 0:12:47under the rule of the ancient king.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53The giant rope is over 100m long,

0:12:53 > 0:12:55and is made entirely of rice straw from the harvest.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Legend has it that whichever side wins will have good luck,

0:12:58 > 0:13:00and a good harvest.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11CHEERING

0:13:11 > 0:13:13No-one knows who's won.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15- Did we win? - I don't know what happened.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17I don't know if we won or not.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Although, just as the group discovered with karate,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23it looks like winning isn't the most important thing.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30- Oh, it was so fun!- I know, oh...my hands are really hurting,

0:13:30 > 0:13:33but I didn't want to stop, I wanted to carry on.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36At the end it started going that way, and we were like, no!

0:13:36 > 0:13:40- No! Come back this way! - I was like, what is going on?!

0:13:42 > 0:13:43Now it's time for the big event.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Sumo.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Sumo is Japan's national sport.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Top wrestlers are massive celebrities.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56And by massive, I mean huge!

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Being overweight can be a good thing in sumo,

0:14:00 > 0:14:04with some wrestlers weighing in at up to 35 stone.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07The rules are simple. If any part of your body

0:14:07 > 0:14:11touches the ground, or you're pushed out of the ring, you lose.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15Like karate, sumo demands strength, skill and technique.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18A tug-of-war is one thing, going head-to-head in sumo

0:14:18 > 0:14:20is entirely different.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23And will require all the power and endurance they've gained

0:14:23 > 0:14:25from their karate training so far.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32Easy-peasey Japanesey.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35Well, even sumo wrestlers have to start somewhere.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38CHEERING

0:14:40 > 0:14:42They look really small to be sumo wrestlers

0:14:42 > 0:14:45They need to put on a few pounds.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54Sumo is so popular in Japan, most children would rather be

0:14:54 > 0:14:57a sumo wrestler than a footballer.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00I don't know if I want to do it.

0:15:02 > 0:15:07Having checked out the competition, Jedd steps into the ring.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09- CHEERING - JEDD!

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Always the first to get involved, Jedd's out to prove to his dad

0:15:14 > 0:15:17that there's more to him than just ballet.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21CHEERING

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Come on, JEDD!

0:15:34 > 0:15:37With one point each, Jedd is in with a chance...

0:15:37 > 0:15:41if he can remember to use his new karate stances.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55CHEERING

0:15:56 > 0:15:59But sadly, Jedd's sumo career is short-lived.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01I'm proud of you! Done well.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03- He done really well. - Was it a draw, or did he win?

0:16:03 > 0:16:07No, he just got the last point. But he must have been a foot bigger,

0:16:07 > 0:16:11and about three stone heavier than you. You had fun though.

0:16:11 > 0:16:12Hmm, really good fun.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16I think he's proved that he's got a bit of a fighting spirit.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18Don't cease to surprise me, really.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20- Get you into boxing next, yeah? - Ha-ha!

0:16:22 > 0:16:26Jedd came to Japan to show his dad that ballet wasn't a soft option.

0:16:26 > 0:16:31Dad doesn't think you are sporty to dance, but I'll prove him wrong.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33Having seen Jedd rise to every challenge so far,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Paul's seeing a different side to his son.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Anything he does, he puts everything into it.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41- So I'm proud of him anyway, ain't I? - Hmm.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49Now that his ballet-dancer son has had a go,

0:16:49 > 0:16:52boxer Paul must prove he too can brave the sumo.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54But who will take him on?

0:16:54 > 0:16:56What? I've got to sumo him?!

0:22:29 > 0:22:32Mikey and Mark seem to be struggling to get in synch.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37They're both scared of the sea. This could be a disaster for them.

0:22:37 > 0:22:42If Mikey doesn't win a challenge and keeps being let down by his dad,

0:22:42 > 0:22:43things will get bad.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49Dad, you're doing it out of time.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53They'll have to start communicating to get back on course.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Left, left.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57As they reach the halfway point,

0:22:57 > 0:23:00Phoebe and Joe have a battle to stay ahead.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04Joe will be on a high from last night's victory.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49and focusing to keep going.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52It was very tiring and I'm not doing anything else

0:24:53 > 0:24:56While spending time on Ieshima Island,

0:24:56 > 0:24:59something clicked for joker, Joe.

0:24:59 > 0:25:04As Phoebe's dad, I felt responsible for doing the best I possibly could

0:25:04 > 0:25:06to get Phoebe her first headband.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09I still want to be a joker and a kid, but at the same time,

0:25:09 > 0:25:10I want to be a dad too.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13So how has the trip helped their relationships?

0:25:13 > 0:25:18I have seen another side to her. A more fun...

0:25:18 > 0:25:20A cooler side, like she's always laughing.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59I'd have to agree with that, Mikey.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01I'm struggling to remember all the moves.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05Old dog, new tricks and all that. I just can't get it, to be honest.
