0:00:02 > 0:00:03Busy modern-day Britain

0:00:03 > 0:00:07is full of families trying to find time for each other.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11But could sharing a once-in-a-lifetime experience

0:00:11 > 0:00:13solve their problems?

0:00:13 > 0:00:17Four families went to Japan to be immersed in the ancient culture,

0:00:17 > 0:00:20and learn karate -

0:00:20 > 0:00:24a traditional martial art that teaches discipline and respect.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28But will the intense training regime bring them closer together...

0:00:28 > 0:00:32- This is one of the first things I've done with my dad.- I love my Dad!

0:00:32 > 0:00:36- He's everything you could want from a kid.- ..or will the challenges

0:00:36 > 0:00:39- force them apart? - You must communicate.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42You always go on about it.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45She has to act like a grown-up.

0:00:45 > 0:00:50Can this unique experience give them the fighting spirit they need

0:00:50 > 0:00:54to earn a place at the World Karate Tournament...

0:00:54 > 0:00:58- He'll be upset if we don't. - ..and improve the relationship?

0:00:58 > 0:01:00This is gonna be tough.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24So there.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33It's the day of the World Karate Tournament, and some of the group

0:01:33 > 0:01:35are up early for a swim.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39- That's it!- Since the four families arrived in Japan

0:01:39 > 0:01:44less than three weeks ago, they've had many ups and downs.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53The families have travelled to the mystical island of Okinawa,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55the birthplace of karate,

0:01:55 > 0:01:59for an intensive crash course in the martial art,

0:01:59 > 0:02:03taught by world-renowned Grand Master Higaonna,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06and teachers Brent and Kuramoto.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10The aim was to get the families good enough to get their yellow belt -

0:02:10 > 0:02:15an achievement that would usually take months - so they could perform

0:02:15 > 0:02:17at the World Karate Tournament.

0:02:18 > 0:02:23We're desperate to go to the Championships after so much pain!

0:02:25 > 0:02:29But at the belt grading, it was clear the parents were nowhere near

0:02:29 > 0:02:33as good as their kids. All four children were given belts,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36but of the adults, only Joe made the grade.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40That means only five of the eight will perform -

0:02:43 > 0:02:50Jedd, Chloe, Mikey, Phoebe and Phoebe's dad, Joe.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00For the first time in weeks, there's no early-morning training

0:03:00 > 0:03:03for the families. Instead, they get the morning off to prepare

0:03:03 > 0:03:06for the World Tournament.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10They won't be performing for a few hours yet, but Jedd

0:03:10 > 0:03:12is starting to have doubts.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15- What are you thinking? - It's gonna be scary.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19No, nothing to be scared of. I think you'll be good.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24That's right, Paul, there's nothing to be scared of.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Unless you count the fact they're competing

0:03:27 > 0:03:31at the biggest traditional karate competition in the world,

0:03:34 > 0:03:39lining up alongside 6,000 kids and adults from 43 different countries,

0:03:39 > 0:03:45performing in front of a huge audience, and coming face-to-face

0:03:45 > 0:03:49with some of the most skilled karate experts on the planet.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53Let's not forget that a couple of weeks ago, they knew

0:03:53 > 0:03:56absolutely nothing about karate.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Good luck to them, especially Jedd.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03- Are you nervous?- A little bit.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07I'm scared too, cos I don't know what to expect.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Go out there and do your best. The nerves will go away.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Jedd has always admired his tough dad, who regularly boxes

0:04:15 > 0:04:18with his elder brothers.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23My dad don't give up, he keeps it together, works hard. A fighter.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28But at the belt grading, Paul failed to get his yellow belt,

0:04:28 > 0:04:30which shocked the group.

0:04:30 > 0:04:35Practising, I knew it off by heart. I froze a bit. Don't know why.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Unfortunately, fail.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43When my dad didn't get his yellow belt, I felt really upset,

0:04:43 > 0:04:47and that he'd let me down.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Jedd came to Japan to bond with his dad so performing without him

0:04:50 > 0:04:52is the worst possible outcome.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56He'll be there but in a seat, he won't be next to me.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59That makes it all different.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02It's lovely that he thinks of me, but he's come all the way now,

0:05:02 > 0:05:04so he's got to do it on his own.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07So, will he, or won't he?

0:05:08 > 0:05:12Sit on the coach, we'll have a talk to you, try and relax you,

0:05:12 > 0:05:15and get out there and do your thing.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18- You can entertain. You like entertaining.- Yeah!

0:05:18 > 0:05:20That'd be good, yeah?

0:05:20 > 0:05:23- Yeah!- Good luck.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34With Jedd on board, the Grand Master wants to teach the family something

0:05:34 > 0:05:39that will help them focus on their performance.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47There's a breathing technique called sanchin, and it's scary to watch.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00The idea is to empty all the old air

0:06:00 > 0:06:03from your lungs, and bring in new air, focusing the mind,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06and giving you courage.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10Experts use this technique to achieve the seemingly impossible.

0:06:19 > 0:06:25It has taken the Grand Master years to perfect this technique,

0:06:25 > 0:06:31and if the families learn it, he is certain it helps calm their nerves.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35TRANSLATOR: In everyday life, you can use this.

0:06:39 > 0:06:44If you have worries, use this breathing, get rid of your worries.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49Now it's the families' turn to give it a go.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53As usual, their version isn't quite the same as the Grand Master's.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58It's not even close.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Rather than them bringing new air in,

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Mark just looks like he let one go.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10< Control your throat, don't use your mouth.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12It's a shame the families haven't quite grasped it.

0:07:12 > 0:07:17They will have to rely on something else if they want to take

0:07:17 > 0:07:19the audiences' breath away.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25Now the yellow belts must get ready.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30This is it, now! 6,200 performing,

0:07:30 > 0:07:32no pressure, though, eh?

0:07:32 > 0:07:35No pressure!

0:07:35 > 0:07:39You're going to do brilliant. I'll be there for moral support.

0:07:39 > 0:07:46- How you feel about today, then?- Not really worried.- Phoebe and dad Joe

0:07:46 > 0:07:49are the only family pair who qualified.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53- Did you think we'd ever get to this stage?- No, probably not!

0:07:53 > 0:07:58I just thought it was a long road ahead,

0:07:58 > 0:08:01and somehow, we're near the end of it now.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05The duo have been on a rocky journey.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08She's talking to me like a piece of poo, and I'm not having it!

0:08:08 > 0:08:15- Joe never thought he'd get his belt. - I think I'm the worst of everyone.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19But at the grading he pulled something special out of the bag.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21You're awesome.

0:08:21 > 0:08:26And as the only adult to make it through, he's the driving force

0:08:26 > 0:08:31- amongst the yellow belts.- Are you ready?- Hai.- Do it with passion,

0:08:31 > 0:08:33- and feeling. Are you READY?!- HAI!

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Hai myself...

0:08:37 > 0:08:39HAI! That's how you should do it.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45This is the routine that the group will perform.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48It's a complicated sequence of moves called a kata.

0:08:48 > 0:08:53The chosen five will have to do this in front of thousands of spectators

0:08:53 > 0:08:57and the world's media, but that's not all.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01They will be expected to do it in perfect time with each other,

0:09:01 > 0:09:03and 800 black belts.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Now, THAT's pressure.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10HAI KARATE!

0:09:13 > 0:09:16The family have arrived at the arena that hosts the World Tournament.

0:09:20 > 0:09:25Gaining yellow belts in just three weeks is an amazing achievement.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30Being amongst the best in the world is a whole different experience.

0:09:30 > 0:09:3447-year-old Joe can't help feeling a bit silly.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38It's very humbling to be a yellow belt, when you see tiny little kids

0:09:38 > 0:09:41who are also yellow belts, as well as our troupe,

0:09:41 > 0:09:43and you do feel a bit like a freak.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47Because I am the only adult here with just a yellow belt!

0:09:47 > 0:09:50Thought we were better off with a white one, you know?

0:09:50 > 0:09:54I am literally the joker right here and now.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59But despite Joe's pre-match entertainment,

0:09:59 > 0:10:03yesterday's tough belt grading is still weighing on everyone's minds.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Especially Chloe.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Chloe has always been the best at karate.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19But her mum is pretty shocking.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22And Chloe hasn't really helped her.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26I'm not doing it for Mum, cos I will get through anyway.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30And at the grading, the Senseis had some tough words for Chloe.

0:10:30 > 0:10:36- Your spirit is weak.- If the Sensei had not said I had a weak spirit,

0:10:36 > 0:10:40and maybe put it in a nicer way, I'd have felt more confident,

0:10:40 > 0:10:44like I wouldn't have been knocked down, and I haven't got over that,

0:10:44 > 0:10:48it still upsets me a lot, maybe I'd have carried on karate but

0:10:48 > 0:10:50I think it's not for me any more.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55But now is not the time to give up,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58as the group must join the other performers for their warm-up.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- It's Karate World, here!- Yeah!

0:11:01 > 0:11:06While the five yellow belts prepare, the parents who didn't make it

0:11:06 > 0:11:08are having a more relaxing time,

0:11:08 > 0:11:13and Sandra is confident that her daughter won't let the side down.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17The Sensei's comments did knock her, and it really hurt her,

0:11:17 > 0:11:21but I think once Chloe gets out there, the professional

0:11:21 > 0:11:24performing part in her will come out.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28CROWD CHEERS AND APPLAUDS

0:11:37 > 0:11:41Inside the stadium, the opening ceremony has begun.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48And karate experts from all over the world are gathering.

0:11:49 > 0:11:55This is a really big deal! I didn't expect this! I really didn't.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58I couldn't imagine this...

0:12:01 > 0:12:03I am from India.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06We are from Serbia.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09'The United States of America!'

0:12:09 > 0:12:13- We're from New Mexico, United States.- It's a very great honour.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16England!

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Woohoo!

0:12:28 > 0:12:32Our performers aren't representing a country, so they get to chill out.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Well, that's what they think.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Kuramoto Sensei has arranged a surprise for the kids

0:12:38 > 0:12:43to join the Okinawan under-16s in one of the opening displays.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47Which means learning some extra moves very quickly.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01I'm a bit confused about what we've got to do.

0:13:04 > 0:13:08Memorising these baffling new moves on top of the routine they rehearsed

0:13:08 > 0:13:12is the last thing the kids need.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14It's different - he's teaching us

0:13:14 > 0:13:19differently to what Grand Master taught us. To go quickly, and all!

0:13:27 > 0:13:31Inside the arena, the parents are wondering what the kids are up to.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35Probably enjoying themselves. Ain't seen this yet, so...

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- No.- I'd hate for them to start being a bag of nerves now.

0:13:40 > 0:13:45Don't worry, the boys are happily mingling with the Okinawan kids,

0:13:45 > 0:13:49and wowing them with the Japanese they've learned.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52HE SPEAKS IN JAPANESE

0:13:52 > 0:13:57Jedd and Mikey have had to deal with the fact their dads didn't qualify

0:13:57 > 0:14:00for the tournament, something they are both disappointed about.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04I wish I was with my dad, cos if I was with him and performing,

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I'd be less nervous, and a bit more confident.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10Mikey has always questioned his dad's lack of commitment.

0:14:10 > 0:14:15- To be more passionate! - He needs to double his effort.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18He's not trying 100%,

0:14:18 > 0:14:22- and I need him to try 100%. - But over the last few days,

0:14:22 > 0:14:25he was impressed with the effort his dad started to make.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30Woke up last night thinking about the kata, going through my head.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33And at the belt grading, he finally showed some passion.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37Good to see I was going for it, as I did really try yesterday.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41He was really upset for me. He even gave me a kiss last night.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44Don't think we've ever done that before.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48We've got into hugging and bonding, it's fantastic.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52It's really brought out a different side of both of us.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56But there's no time for hugging now,

0:14:56 > 0:15:00as the kids need to get ready for the opening ceremony.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Phoebe!

0:15:04 > 0:15:06Phoe... She's seen me.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08Yes, Sandra, she can see you.

0:15:08 > 0:15:12- PHOEBE!- 'And everyone in the stadium can hear you.'

0:15:12 > 0:15:14Coo-oo!

0:15:14 > 0:15:18The only English kids amongst the whole lot, it looks like.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Incredible, seeing them there. Amazing.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25These children have been doing it for ages. It's brilliant.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29INSTRUCTOR SHOUTS IN JAPANESE

0:15:30 > 0:15:35Will they fit in when they've just been shown the moves?

0:15:35 > 0:15:38The Grand Master is watching.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41MUSIC STARTS

0:15:50 > 0:15:51HE SHOUTS

0:15:51 > 0:15:53DRUMBEAT

0:15:53 > 0:15:56SENSEI CALLS, CHILDREN RESPOND

0:16:04 > 0:16:09It was a shaky start, but they're now looking the part.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20DRUMBEAT AND CALLS FINISH

0:16:23 > 0:16:26Very good. Strong spirit.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30They survived the first test, but that was just the opening ceremony.

0:16:30 > 0:16:35Performing with the adult black belts will be in a different league.

0:16:35 > 0:16:36That was fun!

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Slightly embarrassing.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42It was different, and it felt like we were all connected.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Now you're doing the kata with the adults.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48- Now?- Very soon.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Three weeks ago, four families came to Japan to gain their yellow belt.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58Their aim was to perform at the World Karate Tournament.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01There's been blood... Well, kind of.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03A lot of sweat...

0:17:03 > 0:17:05and even some tears.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09But five of the group proved good enough to be awarded the belt.

0:17:10 > 0:17:14This is what they've been training for.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17They are going to perform a kata routine

0:17:17 > 0:17:20with the best black belts on the planet.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Rather them than me, if I'm honest.

0:17:32 > 0:17:37TRANSLATION: In karate, you battle not an opponent, but yourself.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39Never give up on yourself.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49Our families have struggled to get their yellow belt.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51But that is only the first grade in karate.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Now they'll perform the kata routine

0:17:54 > 0:17:57alongside the finest black belts - the highest grade.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00They have a lot to live up to.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06Relax.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Strong.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Just allowing them to perform with experts

0:18:11 > 0:18:14is a big deal for the Grand Master.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16His reputation is on the line.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Relax.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27The group have just 20 minutes to brush up on their routine.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Every black belt in the room is watching.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40- It's so intimidating, isn't it? - It's very, very big.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45Behind leg.

0:18:45 > 0:18:46No extra move.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50With only minutes to go, the Grand Master is satisfied they are ready.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52THEY SHOUT

0:18:52 > 0:18:56If you do a mistake, doesn't care. Just continue.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Try your best. Good luck.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Time to show their routine to the world.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05- Hai!- Hai!- Hai!- Hai!

0:19:05 > 0:19:07- Hai!- Hai!- Hai!- Hai!

0:19:07 > 0:19:08- Hai!- Hai!- Hai!

0:19:08 > 0:19:10ALL: Hai!

0:19:10 > 0:19:13It's a great opportunity I'll never get again.

0:19:13 > 0:19:18I'll be cheering everyone else on. They'll be cheering us on, too.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22I want to make Sensei proud, so I won't mess up!

0:19:22 > 0:19:25I'm going to make my dad proud, Sensei proud.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27Going to make everyone at home proud.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30I'm proud of them.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29OK.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36So of the eight that arrived in Japan three weeks ago,

0:22:36 > 0:22:40five became good enough to perform at the highest level.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51So that's the end of the story.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56It IS the end, right?

0:23:03 > 0:23:05The journey is not over yet.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Uh-oh.

0:23:12 > 0:23:18Tomorrow, you face the most important challenge yet. The kata battle.

0:23:20 > 0:23:26In your family pairs, you will perform the kata gekisai dai ichi

0:23:26 > 0:23:30in unison, against the other families.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34The final challenge will be a karate battle between the families

0:23:34 > 0:23:37to see who has the strongest bond.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41They will perform face-to-face in a knockout competition.

0:23:43 > 0:23:44Only one pair will win.

0:23:46 > 0:23:53You will be judged on your teamwork rather than individual abilities.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55Not only did you come to learn karate,

0:23:55 > 0:23:59you came to make your relationship stronger.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02The winner will be the family pair

0:24:02 > 0:24:06who have the strongest bonds and fighting spirit.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11Parents, let's see if you can rise to the occasion.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14Don't let your children down again.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17Let's go training. Go.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19Just moments ago,

0:24:19 > 0:24:22the families were unified as one team.

0:24:22 > 0:24:27Now, they're pitched against each other in a knockout karate battle.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29Now they're such good friends.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33So you'd expect them to play down their chances.

0:24:33 > 0:24:39- We're going to win!- We're going to win!- We are!- We are!

0:24:39 > 0:24:43- Everyone shut up - WE'RE going to... - No, WE'RE going to!

0:24:48 > 0:24:53- In the zone!- This one's going to be a really tight battle.- In the zone.

0:24:53 > 0:24:58One person who isn't taking part in the banter is Chloe.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01After Sensei's words at the belt grading,

0:25:01 > 0:25:04she'd rather give up than be tested again.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07I am going to lose, cos I ain't got no spirit.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10I've got a weak spirit, so he said,

0:25:10 > 0:25:15you will be tested on if you as a family pair can prove it.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18Just do what you can do, and that's it.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22Chloe has taken Sensei's words personally.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26Maybe Brent can explain why he made the negative comments.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30The grading is not just about what happened in the grading.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33It's about the whole journey we've been on.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35It just sounds like I'm not really into it.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38I tried my best and it wasn't good enough.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42But he was criticising her for giving up on her mum.

0:25:42 > 0:25:46I've seen your mum practising while you were laying there.

0:25:46 > 0:25:51You could have helped more. You've got it, but your mum hasn't yet.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55- That's a sign of a weak spirit. - It's hard teaching your mum. I can...

0:25:55 > 0:26:00Exactly. That's a weak spirit. this is what the whole meaning of it is.

0:26:00 > 0:26:05Take this on board, make yourself a better person.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07It's not a negative thing.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11- It's a good thing that you can use for life.- Have a look inside.

0:26:11 > 0:26:16It's hard. OK, I'll help my mum, I'll be strong and help my mum.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18And your spirit gets strong.

0:26:18 > 0:26:19Mm.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22Brent's words have had an effect.

0:26:22 > 0:26:26It looks like Chloe is up for the challenge.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28We're going to train hard,

0:26:28 > 0:26:31keep our spirits strong

0:26:31 > 0:26:35and just...just do our best in the challenge tomorrow.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40The pairs have 24 hours to work on their routine

0:26:40 > 0:26:44and show the Grand Master who has the closest relationship.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52As they sit down for a meal, the fighting talk begins.

0:26:54 > 0:26:59Oh, yeah, friendship - that goes out of the window, when it's competition.

0:26:59 > 0:27:04In terms of bonding no-one can beat Paul and Jedd. No-one.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07I think...we haven't won a challenge yet.

0:27:07 > 0:27:11I've let him down every time so far. The others might up their game.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14Naturally, we've got the best relationship.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16That'll shine out tomorrow.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20We know that Chloe's got a competitive streak.

0:27:20 > 0:27:24She would like to win and be at the top.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26I just want to get through it!

0:27:26 > 0:27:30Be great to win. I'll say I really want it - why not?

0:27:30 > 0:27:35The plan is to get into unison so it looks smooth between us.

0:27:35 > 0:27:40If we don't argue, I think we've got every chance of bagging this one.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43Next time on Hai! Karate - Journey To Japan.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47There's tension as the group prepare for the kata battle.

0:27:47 > 0:27:52Time to find out who's the best team and who has the strongest bond.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54Only one family will be victorious.
