0:56:02 > 0:56:05It's termtime again and our four magicians have left school
0:56:05 > 0:56:06on a brand-new mission.
0:56:06 > 0:56:10This time, we're taking unsuspecting kids out of school
0:56:10 > 0:56:12and sending them on school trips.
0:56:12 > 0:56:15They're off to visit some amazing locations,
0:56:15 > 0:56:18where they'll witness incredible magic.
0:56:18 > 0:56:22And once again, we're hiding secret cameras in every corner,
0:56:22 > 0:56:25so you don't miss a trick on any school trip.
0:56:25 > 0:56:28How long will it take before the classes shout...
0:56:35 > 0:56:38This is year five getting on the coach.
0:56:38 > 0:56:42They're on a magical mystery tour to...
0:56:42 > 0:56:44The Royal Academy of Music.
0:56:44 > 0:56:48Famous former pupils include Sir Elton John, Katherine Jenkins
0:56:48 > 0:56:51and Gareth from The Choir.
0:56:51 > 0:56:54So our magicians can play their tricks, string their kids along
0:56:54 > 0:56:58and hit a high note, we're giving them a musical makeover.
0:56:58 > 0:57:00John's an Italian tenor, or should I say ten euros.
0:57:00 > 0:57:02HE LAUGHS
0:57:02 > 0:57:04And roll over, Beethoven, here's Fergus.
0:57:06 > 0:57:08They're ready for the performance of their life as here
0:57:08 > 0:57:10comes their toughest audience yet.
0:57:10 > 0:57:12So my name is Trevor Clef.
0:57:12 > 0:57:15Trevor Clef? Sounds like treble clef.
0:57:15 > 0:57:17But the class don't know the musical score yet.
0:57:17 > 0:57:22I'm in charge here at the Academy of all instrumental design.
0:57:22 > 0:57:25I replicate things, I fix things, I do all of those things.
0:57:25 > 0:57:28So isn't it wonderful, all the things that we have around us today?
0:57:28 > 0:57:31You'll have seen downstairs, we have a Stradivari violin.
0:57:31 > 0:57:34It dates back... It's like 300 years old.
0:57:34 > 0:57:39This particular piano here is from the 1600s.
0:57:39 > 0:57:42So that is 500 years old.
0:57:42 > 0:57:44Isn't that incredible?
0:57:44 > 0:57:46And a true fact.
0:57:46 > 0:57:50Now, one of the things I specialise in is drums and the design of drums.
0:57:50 > 0:57:53So who here has played the drums?
0:57:53 > 0:57:54Lots of you! Very good.
0:57:54 > 0:57:58Now, obviously, the drums are a very, very noisy instrument.
0:57:58 > 0:57:59Don't bang on about it, mate.
0:57:59 > 0:58:03But, what we're going to do is talk about the design.
0:58:03 > 0:58:08So, we have here a drumhead and here we have the plinth.
0:58:08 > 0:58:10The plinth is the thing that the drumhead sits on,
0:58:10 > 0:58:12so it's nice and stable.
0:58:12 > 0:58:14Keep your eyes on that drum because it's so magic,
0:58:14 > 0:58:16it'll knock your hi-hat off.
0:58:16 > 0:58:19Now, often you have padding in the drum
0:58:19 > 0:58:21and what that does is it reverberates the sound.
0:58:21 > 0:58:25So it makes it echo, so you'll get a really good solid noise.
0:58:25 > 0:58:29We also have drum skins.
0:58:29 > 0:58:31They go on the front and the back of the drum.
0:58:31 > 0:58:34And we're going to do that now with some assistance from Dino.
0:58:34 > 0:58:36- So over you come, Dino. - I'll give you a hand.
0:58:36 > 0:58:39Dino is John's Italian alter ego for this trick.
0:58:39 > 0:58:42So I'll place this one here, this drum skin on the front
0:58:42 > 0:58:45and Dino will place that one onto the back.
0:58:45 > 0:58:49There's nothing inside that drum head or underneath it.
0:58:49 > 0:58:51They're placing the skins carefully on the drum.
0:58:51 > 0:58:54It's already starting to look a bit more like a drum, yes?
0:58:54 > 0:58:56- ALL:- Yes.
0:58:56 > 0:58:58Shall we see if it sounds a bit more like a drum? Yes?
0:58:58 > 0:58:59- ALL:- Yes.
0:58:59 > 0:59:01They don't mind a bit of noise.
0:59:01 > 0:59:03Oh, that doesn't sound much like a drum, does it?
0:59:03 > 0:59:06Normally you get more of a doof. Can I hear you make a doof?
0:59:06 > 0:59:07- ALL:- Doof.- Doof.
0:59:07 > 0:59:09Put a couple of those together
0:59:09 > 0:59:12and you could have the doof-doof bit from the end of EastEnders.
0:59:12 > 0:59:15Now, if you have a smaller drum, like a drum with a thinner skin,
0:59:15 > 0:59:17and even more timber in, you get like a katshh.
0:59:17 > 0:59:19Can you do a katshh?
0:59:19 > 0:59:21- ALL:- Katshh.- Good. And then you might have a symbol, like a hi-hat.
0:59:21 > 0:59:23Like a tss, tss, tss, tss.
0:59:23 > 0:59:27- So can I get a doof, chtss doof, chtss. ALL:- doof, chtss.
0:59:27 > 0:59:29That's right, now these drums will all go together.
0:59:29 > 0:59:32Normally the drums aren't played on their own because they're
0:59:32 > 0:59:34so noisy and loud.
0:59:34 > 0:59:36So they'll be part of a bigger band, or something like that.
0:59:36 > 0:59:39Some loud magic coming up. Watch the drum.
0:59:39 > 0:59:42Dino, do you know when the drums were first invented?
0:59:42 > 0:59:44Yes, the first a-drum, he was, he was in a cavern...
0:59:44 > 0:59:46- KNOCKING FROM DRUM - What was that?
0:59:46 > 0:59:49- Did anyone else hear that? ALL:- Yeah.
0:59:49 > 0:59:51Where did it come from?
0:59:51 > 0:59:52KNOCKING FROM DRUM
0:59:52 > 0:59:54It's inside the drum but that was empty, wasn't it?
0:59:54 > 0:59:57It's the drum, it's a-playing itself.
0:59:57 > 0:59:59It's playing a trick on them.
0:59:59 > 1:00:00Playing itself, that's...
1:00:00 > 1:00:02Ahhh!
1:00:02 > 1:00:04Boom! A banging trick, it's Katherine!
1:00:04 > 1:00:06Where did she come from?!
1:00:06 > 1:00:08She's certainly a good-stick.
1:00:08 > 1:00:11It's Katherine and I'm Fergus.
1:00:11 > 1:00:13Yeah, I'm John.
1:00:13 > 1:00:16They're about to build to the big crescendo...
1:00:16 > 1:00:20John is not actually Italian but he does love to eat a lot of pizza.
1:00:20 > 1:00:22Gives a new meaning to Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
1:00:22 > 1:00:26And in fact we are magicians.
1:00:26 > 1:00:29You've all been set up by your teachers, by your schools,
1:00:29 > 1:00:31by your parents.
1:00:31 > 1:00:33There's a camera there. There's a camera there.
1:00:33 > 1:00:36A camera there. You're going to be on Help! My School Trip is Magic!
1:00:36 > 1:00:39SCREAMING
1:00:39 > 1:00:42A chorus of approval but what chord did it strike
1:00:42 > 1:00:45with the school-trippers?
1:00:45 > 1:00:48It was a really excellent trick.
1:00:48 > 1:00:51Playing itself... That's... Ahh!
1:00:51 > 1:00:55I've never seen anything like it except for cartoons.
1:00:55 > 1:00:58This Mozart-ful magic hit the school trip
1:00:58 > 1:01:00like a bolt from the blue Danube.
1:01:00 > 1:01:03It was as pitch perfect as this shout...
