0:00:03 > 0:00:06and our four magicians have left school on a brand-new mission.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09But do you think you'd recognise them

0:00:09 > 0:00:11if they were outside the classroom?

0:00:11 > 0:00:12Do you?

0:00:12 > 0:00:16Now's your chance cos they're going deeper undercover,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19with new disguises, ambitious costumes

0:00:19 > 0:00:21and even taller tales.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29This time we're taking unsuspecting kids out of school,

0:00:29 > 0:00:33piling them on coaches and sending them on school trips.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35They're off to visit some amazing locations

0:00:35 > 0:00:38where they'll witness incredible magic.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40I was like, "Oh, my gosh!"

0:00:40 > 0:00:44And once again we're hiding secret cameras in every corner

0:00:44 > 0:00:47so you don't miss a trick on ANY school trip.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49The magic is bigger than ever.

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Wow!

0:00:50 > 0:00:53It might be term time, but school's out.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55I can't believe our teachers did that.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58How long will it take before the classes shout...

0:01:05 > 0:01:10Hello. It's me, Iain. Welcome to Help! My School Trip Is Magic!

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Our magicians are no longer supply teachers.

0:01:13 > 0:01:17They're now masquerading as staff in some popular attractions.

0:01:17 > 0:01:23And because we know you know them, we've disguised them even more.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26We've secretly filmed the results with special hidden cameras.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Let's see what's coming up in today's show.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35John almost spells it out for the kids at the toy museum

0:01:35 > 0:01:37but they won't believe their eyes.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38Look what happens!

0:01:38 > 0:01:42You've been sending in clips of all your best magic tricks,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45and later on I will be picking my favourite -

0:01:45 > 0:01:47it's the Wannabe Wizards.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50John's also quick on the draw for Tricks Of The Trade,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53with a puzzle that will leave you going round in circles.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57And Katherine has these pupils thinking outside the box

0:01:57 > 0:01:59on a trip that's a total gas.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00Move it!

0:02:00 > 0:02:04Do YOU think you'd be able to tell if your school trip was magic?

0:02:04 > 0:02:05Do you?

0:02:08 > 0:02:11This is Katherine, a great all-rounder.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14She's got this trip squarely in her sights.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Here's Year 5 leaving the site of their school.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20They're out on a trip like not other.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22It'll start off educationally

0:02:22 > 0:02:26and end up sensationally, with some memorable magic.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30At the moment, though, only their parents and teachers know.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34They're all off the Victoria And Albert Museum Of Childhood.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37It includes the largest collection of dolls in the UK,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40and there's over 1,000 action figures.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Is that Katherine's disguise?!

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Just messing! There she is there.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47John's along to play too.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48The coach is en route,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52and for the magic Katherine is going to drive them to distraction.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54I'm hoping I'm going to keep the class motoring along

0:02:54 > 0:02:56and I'm going to drive them wild with excitement

0:02:56 > 0:02:58with the trick I'm going to do.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Now, that's what I call magical misdirection.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07The kids have found their way here OK,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10and it's time for our big kids to get to work.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12The school trip are looking around the exhibits

0:03:12 > 0:03:15but they're about to get a presentation on toys

0:03:15 > 0:03:16in this break-out room.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19But will the tension of being undercover make our magicians

0:03:19 > 0:03:21break out in a sweat?

0:03:21 > 0:03:23And if the kids find them out,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25will they throw their toys out of the pram?

0:03:25 > 0:03:26Only one way to find out.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Ready, TEDDY, go!

0:03:29 > 0:03:33Hello, everyone. Welcome to the museum. My name is Marie Annette.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37MARIONETTE?! She's certainly got this lot on a piece of string.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40I work here, constructing new toys and repairing them,

0:03:40 > 0:03:42so it's job to make sure

0:03:42 > 0:03:44that everything in the museum works perfectly.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48If we get sent any new toys, I'm the one who puts them together,

0:03:48 > 0:03:49and this takes a long, long time,

0:03:49 > 0:03:53so we've come up with lots of time-saving ideas to help us along.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56And this is our semi-automatic construction device,

0:03:56 > 0:03:59which helps build the toys quickly.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Like Katherine, it's good at making stuff up.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Granted, it does just look like a box, doesn't it?

0:04:05 > 0:04:06Cos it's an empty box.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- But all the gubbins... - Technical word there - gubbins.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11The mechanics are all in the side, in the walls there.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14I'm going to show you how it works.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17So, this is a remote control, which I think is going to help

0:04:17 > 0:04:19with our toy that we're going to make.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Katherine is in total control of this class.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24So we'll just close it up, like that.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28Now, I wonder if anyone can guess

0:04:28 > 0:04:33what toy I might be making. What do you think?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- A car. - A car? Well, let's have a look. OK...

0:04:36 > 0:04:40She's putting the piece into her semi-automatic construction device.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43So it's a wheel, so probably you could be right...

0:04:43 > 0:04:47So we've got one of the wheels there and another wheel.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Where there's a WHEEL, there's a way to trick them!

0:04:50 > 0:04:53So let's put all the pieces in. We have...

0:04:53 > 0:04:56All the separate pieces of the toy car are going into that box.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01And then all we need to do is close the box, like that,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03and press the "assemble" button...

0:05:03 > 0:05:04Uh-oh, she just pressed

0:05:04 > 0:05:07the red button. You're always told not to do that.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Wait a few moments.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11Remember, that box was empty before,

0:05:11 > 0:05:13and has now just got all the bits inside it.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Katherine better not let the side down.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Oh, she has. Whoa!

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Look at that! It's cool, isn't it?

0:05:21 > 0:05:24The toy car's the star! The bits were magically

0:05:24 > 0:05:27joined in the box, and they can't work it out.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Katherine introduced her empty box of tricks,

0:05:30 > 0:05:32but she was just toying with them.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36And this is our semi-automatic construction device.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39She carefully placed parts of the plastic car inside.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43When she opened the box the car was made up. And so are the class.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Look at that! It's cool, isn't it?

0:05:46 > 0:05:47That was an impressive trick,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50but it's all building to an even bigger surprise.

0:05:50 > 0:05:51Look what happens.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56Now John is going to set you a magical challenge

0:05:56 > 0:05:57in Tricks Of The Trade.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59If you fancy yourself as a magician,

0:05:59 > 0:06:01here's a trick you can try on your mates.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04John is going to show you how to draw a circle with

0:06:04 > 0:06:07a dot inside it, like this, without removing his pen from the paper.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Can you beat him to the draw on this trick?

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Find out how he does it later in the show.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15It's going to send you in circles.

0:06:19 > 0:06:20Back to the museum,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23where Katherine's driven this school trip to distraction.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Look at that. It's cool, isn't it?

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Now it's time for more childhood-themed magic

0:06:28 > 0:06:29from childish John.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31He's going to talk to you

0:06:31 > 0:06:33- a little bit about bigger toys. - Hello, boys and girls.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35- ALL:- Hello.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37How are you? Now, my name is Ian - Ian Struction.

0:06:37 > 0:06:42Ian Struction?! More like a complete CON-struction.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45I work here. I also help design new toys - you know, new things

0:06:45 > 0:06:48that need to be made, I'll have to do that.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Honestly, it's really exciting. I'm like a big kid, me.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53He's not wrong there.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56A big kid in my own little toy shop making toys - it's fantastic.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01And I love toys meself, and I've been working on a special range -

0:07:01 > 0:07:03what we call my XXL range, right,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06cos I think of myself as a XXL sort of a guy, you know.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Certainly larger than life.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11So I'm working on XXL toys - you know,

0:07:11 > 0:07:14toys that are normal toys but we just make them bigger.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17So I've worked on things like, er, I worked on toy cars,

0:07:17 > 0:07:20I made toy cars a lot bigger so you can sit in them, you know.

0:07:20 > 0:07:21What, like a car?

0:07:21 > 0:07:25And then, er, toy furniture, I made big toy furniture

0:07:25 > 0:07:28so you could, like, lie in a toy bed or whatever.

0:07:28 > 0:07:29Like a bed.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32And then I worked on, like, I made a giant dolls' house, you know,

0:07:32 > 0:07:34a really big dolls' house.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38To be honest it was just like a real house, except it cost more,

0:07:38 > 0:07:41so that wasn't very popular - it never caught on.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42The kids haven't caught on.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46But I've made lots and lots of stuff and I'm working on a new XXL range,

0:07:46 > 0:07:48er, based on these things here.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Let me show you. See if you can tell me what these are.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Anybody know what these are? Yes?

0:07:54 > 0:07:55Alphabet blocks.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59They're building blocks, aren't they? Little building blocks.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01The build-up to the big trick begins.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Do you know what I like about building blocks, right?

0:08:04 > 0:08:07They're a clever toy cos you can play and learn.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10There's nothing better than learning and playing, is there?

0:08:10 > 0:08:12I love it when I can play a game

0:08:12 > 0:08:15and I learn summat as well.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Who had some of these when you were a little kid,

0:08:17 > 0:08:19when you were a little bairn? Did you have some?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21I had a set of these when I was a bairn.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24These are my two favourite letters - do you know why?

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Cos when I was a little kid, me mum always used to say,

0:08:27 > 0:08:29"Ian, mind your Ps and Qs."

0:08:29 > 0:08:33That's what... I know, it's funny, isn't it?

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Everybody should have an alphabet joke, shouldn't they?

0:08:36 > 0:08:37And that's mine, like.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Now, I've been working on a large-scale version

0:08:40 > 0:08:43of the building blocks. Now, I've got them here, right,

0:08:43 > 0:08:45I've only got the four of them here.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47But I thought, instead of playing

0:08:47 > 0:08:49with your building blocks and learning,

0:08:49 > 0:08:52you could play with your building blocks and get fit -

0:08:52 > 0:08:54do some exercise at the same time.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57So I made big building blocks - that makes sense, doesn't it?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59It's going to make no sense in a minute.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01So, we can do that with these building blocks.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04Now, these building blocks... They're big ones.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Erm, I've got four letters and they spell a word.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Now, have a look at them,

0:09:08 > 0:09:11see if you can tell me what word you think they might spell.

0:09:11 > 0:09:12Is "pelh" a word?

0:09:12 > 0:09:14- Yes?- Help.

0:09:14 > 0:09:15Help - that's right.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Now, I chose the word "help" cos I thought it would be really nice

0:09:18 > 0:09:19if you help me.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Also a nod to the name of our show, but they haven't noticed.

0:09:23 > 0:09:24- Would you like to do that?- Yes.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26You don't have to get up from where you're sat,

0:09:26 > 0:09:29but you're going to help me spell the word "help".

0:09:29 > 0:09:31But it's a little bit complicated

0:09:31 > 0:09:33cos we're going to spell the word "help" backwards,

0:09:33 > 0:09:37- which would be "ff-huh". - Er, no, it wouldn't.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39I don't know how you say "help" backwards.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41So who can tell me which is the first letter we start with

0:09:41 > 0:09:43if we spell "help" backwards?

0:09:43 > 0:09:45That's right - P, it's over here.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47Marie, would you give me a little hand?

0:09:47 > 0:09:49That's it. So we do a bit of exercise

0:09:49 > 0:09:52- and we build up with the blocks. - Bending the knees to lift up the P.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55They're not as heavy as I thought. Just put that there.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58It's light because it's an empty block.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00OK, so what's the next letter after the P?

0:10:00 > 0:10:02They've put the P on the plinth -

0:10:02 > 0:10:04remember, there was nothing there before.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06What's the next letter?

0:10:06 > 0:10:08- L.- L! Wonderful, I'm glad you came, young lass, aye.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10L, so we'll get the L here.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14We'll put the L on there as well. We're getting the word now, L-P.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Right, L and the P.

0:10:16 > 0:10:17Two letter blocks on the base now.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19They may be spelling "help" backwards,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22but whichever way you look at it it's going to spell magic.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25What's the next letter? It's getting easier now, isn't it? Yes?

0:10:25 > 0:10:28- E.- E, that's right. Have we got an E, Marie?

0:10:28 > 0:10:30By gum, John, there is an E.

0:10:30 > 0:10:31Let's get that E and put it up here.

0:10:31 > 0:10:36Help! My school trip is magic! And the third empty block built up.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Wonderful. Now, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out

0:10:38 > 0:10:41what the next letter is, does it? What is it? Shout it out.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45- ALL: H!- Eee, you've sent me deaf in me other ear!

0:10:45 > 0:10:46I think John needs some help.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Put it up there as well. Lovely.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53The fourth and final empty block is placed on top.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54That's all worked. Lovely.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57You see, what that does now, that spells the word "help".

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Some magic coming up, touch wood.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02And because you've all helped me, right,

0:11:02 > 0:11:04and you've been lovely, I can just knock on that, like that.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Whoa! Where did James come from?!

0:11:08 > 0:11:11He's appeared from nowhere, and they can only stare.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14I'll tell you who it is. This is James, right?

0:11:14 > 0:11:16James boxed clever not to get disguised.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18And he doesn't really work here,

0:11:18 > 0:11:20and I must admit I don't really work here either, cos my name is John,

0:11:20 > 0:11:23and I don't really talk as bad as I was talking there. I talk like this.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26- Pretty close.- And I don't work here either. I'm Katherine.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29That's right. And we're all magicians,

0:11:29 > 0:11:31and you've been set up by your teachers

0:11:31 > 0:11:33and your parents. And there's a camera filming you here

0:11:33 > 0:11:36and there's another camera at the back.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37And you're all going to appear

0:11:37 > 0:11:39on CBBC's Help! My School Trip Is Magic!

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Now, that's what I call a magic spell,

0:11:44 > 0:11:47but how did the class sum it up?

0:11:47 > 0:11:49I thought it was spectacular.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53This school trip turned into an assembly of a remote-controlled car.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Look at that!

0:11:55 > 0:11:58When she took it out, I was so shocked.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01They couldn't help but notice those alphabet blocks were empty.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03They put together the big building blocks

0:12:03 > 0:12:06and then the door opened and another man appeared.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Where did he come from?

0:12:09 > 0:12:12When the man just popped out, I was scared.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Yeah, understandable, but James is lovely when you get to know him.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17It was magic.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22Yes, it was, and the class didn't "ABC" it coming.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Still to come, John reveals the secret to his magic circle

0:12:33 > 0:12:35in Tricks Of The Trade.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Have you worked it out yet?

0:12:37 > 0:12:39It's so light, it's actually floating.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41And Katherine's trick is airborne,

0:12:41 > 0:12:43but will the pupils get carried away?

0:12:43 > 0:12:46Or will they realise their school trip is magic?

0:12:46 > 0:12:48I wasn't expecting that at all.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51But first, we asked you to send in clips of yourself

0:12:51 > 0:12:53performing your best magic tricks.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57We received loads of clips from all over the country.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Each week I'll be choosing a favourite Wannabe Wizard

0:13:00 > 0:13:02and showing them to you guys.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05Ben from Hampshire has got two great tricks,

0:13:05 > 0:13:09and like any self-respecting wizard, he's obviously got a cat.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11So, I brought this colouring book

0:13:11 > 0:13:17and I was sad to see that there were no pictures inside to colour in.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19All the pages are blank.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23So, I think we'll magic up some pictures.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Now, first I need a magic wand.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27You do - you need one of them, yeah.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30I know, I'll magic one! Abracadabra.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Careful, you'll have someone's eye out.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Bit too big. You look after that now.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Ooh, you've been looking after this one all the time.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43The sorcerer's apprentice wants a saucer of milk.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47Now, let's get some pictures.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50Abracadabra.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Remember, that book was empty.

0:13:52 > 0:13:53Oh, awkward.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Didn't work! Try again.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Abracadabra.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59One more time.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Oh, where did they come from?!

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Hmm, it's going to take me a long time

0:14:04 > 0:14:06to colour in all these pictures.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Unless you're magic.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11- I know, we'll do some pictures using magic.- Thought so.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Colours, colours from every nook

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Fly inside my colouring book!

0:14:15 > 0:14:18It's not just pictures, he also SPELLS!

0:14:18 > 0:14:20Whoa! It's a technicolour dream book.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23That was a stroke of genius.

0:14:23 > 0:14:24Worked.

0:14:24 > 0:14:25And a stroke for the cat

0:14:25 > 0:14:27for good measure. There it is.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31So I know something that almost everyone likes - sweets.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33I love 'em, mate.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Now, what do we need for sweets?

0:14:36 > 0:14:37I know - sugar.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Let's first pour in a bit of sugar.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43Steady on, Ben! You said a bit.

0:14:45 > 0:14:46Ah, let's put in the whole pot.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50You can't add too much of a good thing, especially sugar.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54What do we need next? I know - a bit of flavouring.

0:14:54 > 0:14:55Good idea.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57We have, er, strawberry...

0:14:57 > 0:14:59- Ooh.- Blueberry...

0:14:59 > 0:15:01- Yum.- Lime!

0:15:01 > 0:15:02Not fan of that.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05- Strawberry.- Oh, why not?

0:15:05 > 0:15:06Let's just put all those in.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08Might as well just put it all in.

0:15:08 > 0:15:09And now we need a bit of wrapping

0:15:09 > 0:15:13to stop our fingers from getting all sticky when we eat it.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15Very sensible, good idea.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20OK, so we're going to use magic to cook it.

0:15:20 > 0:15:21Cook it? In THAT thing?

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Abracadabra!

0:15:27 > 0:15:29Sweets!

0:15:29 > 0:15:32Whoa! Loads of wrapped sweets and one sweet trick!

0:15:35 > 0:15:36This is Katherine and James.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39He always has a pen for autographs.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42Oh, he wants Katherine's, but she's keeping it under wraps.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46Ouch! Where's the pen gone?!

0:15:46 > 0:15:48EAR it is!

0:15:50 > 0:15:53And here's Year 4 expecting a great day out of school,

0:15:53 > 0:15:57but they have no idea the trip's going to be out of this world.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59They've set up by their parents

0:15:59 > 0:16:03and teachers for a scientific trip that's far from formulaic.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08They're going to the Royal Institution of Great Britain,

0:16:08 > 0:16:11the home of science for over 200 years.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16It's a real seat of learning and our world-class magicians will be

0:16:16 > 0:16:21flying by the seat of their pants and the lapels of their lab coats.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24First, they have to get a more studious make-over.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28Meanwhile, our school trippers are incoming and unawares.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31Katherine's off to get some science equipment, including vials.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34Speaking of VILE, more make-up for James, please.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Only joking, mate, you look absolutely... Oh, dear.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39They think they're here for an educational trip

0:16:39 > 0:16:42so let's learn what our magicians have lined up.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44Today, we're going to do a great trick with an everyday object -

0:16:44 > 0:16:47in this case it's going to be a fizzy drink -

0:16:47 > 0:16:49and we're going to have some of the class shake it up,

0:16:49 > 0:16:52so they'll think that it'll pop and go all over the place.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54The kids are all over the place in the museum,

0:16:54 > 0:16:57which features iconic scientific discoveries.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04And James has found Katherine just in time.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09The cameras are being hidden with scientific precision.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12Katherine and James are on their way up.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16The kids are entering the institution's impressive library,

0:17:16 > 0:17:20where James is going to lecture them on some fizzy physics.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23We have for you today a small presentation on gases.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26Now, who can be very clever and tell me

0:17:26 > 0:17:29the name of the gas that we breathe in?

0:17:29 > 0:17:31- Oxygen.- It's oxygen, isn't it?

0:17:31 > 0:17:35We breathe in oxygen into our bodies and our lungs transfer that

0:17:35 > 0:17:39round our vital organs and then we breathe out

0:17:39 > 0:17:40carbon dioxide, don't we?

0:17:40 > 0:17:42So far, so true.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45Now, carbon dioxide as a gas has many different uses,

0:17:45 > 0:17:50one of which is included just here in these drinks.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54Can anybody guess what effect carbon dioxide might have on these drinks?

0:17:54 > 0:17:56Yes?

0:17:56 > 0:17:59- It makes them fizz. - It does makes them fizz.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Carbon dioxide is added to the liquid

0:18:01 > 0:18:03in a process called carbonation,

0:18:03 > 0:18:07and what happens is the gas is introduced to the liquid

0:18:07 > 0:18:10and then contained within the pressure of the can.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Once the can is opened, the pressure is released

0:18:13 > 0:18:15and therefore the drink has bubbles.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17And we're going to try something today

0:18:17 > 0:18:19called carbonation transference.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Here's where the formula gets to form.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24James has strayed into science fiction.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26And in order to do that, we need to use a couple of drinks -

0:18:26 > 0:18:31one for you and one for me. So, um, which drink shall we use for you?

0:18:31 > 0:18:32- Lemonade.- Lemonade?

0:18:32 > 0:18:34OK, we'll use the lemonade for you,

0:18:34 > 0:18:36which gives us some more drinks leftover here.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38And which one shall I use?

0:18:38 > 0:18:41- Yes?- Cola.- Cola. What we're going to do is take this,

0:18:41 > 0:18:44and I'd like you to take this and give it a little shake, OK?

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Give it a good shake, good shake.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49They don't need a second invitation to shake that can up.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51And pass it along the line and give it a good shake.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Go crazy! Yes, yes, yes.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55They want to see that drink go all over James -

0:18:55 > 0:18:57that's why they're shaking it so vigorously.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00Brilliant shake there, wonderful! And one more. Excellent.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02That can is going to blow.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06So, er, what would happen if I were to open this?

0:19:06 > 0:19:08What? Yes, sorry, Oh, no, I wouldn't do it, of course.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Tempting, though, innit?

0:19:10 > 0:19:13The gas would come out and explode, but what would happen

0:19:13 > 0:19:15if I opened THIS one?

0:19:16 > 0:19:17Nothing.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20That's because, at the moment, we have two examples

0:19:20 > 0:19:22in two very different states.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26Remember, the red can has been shaken, the blue one hasn't.

0:19:26 > 0:19:30Now, to demonstrate that, if you imagine this little black ball

0:19:30 > 0:19:32is a molecule inside this can here.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36What's happening is it's currently bouncing

0:19:36 > 0:19:39all over the sides of the can - very excited.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41That ball stands for a bouncing bubble of fizz.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44Whereas this can has not been shaken

0:19:44 > 0:19:47and therefore its molecules do not bounce at all.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Hang on a second, that ball was bouncing and now it's a dead weight.

0:19:50 > 0:19:54They're really quite fixed in their condition.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57The class are impressed but not suspicious yet.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01Now, this might get a bit messy so we're just going to put that there.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05Messy! Great stuff, can't wait till James gets soaked!

0:20:05 > 0:20:07This involves the next stage now, which is

0:20:07 > 0:20:09the transference of the carbonised energy,

0:20:09 > 0:20:10and in order to do that

0:20:10 > 0:20:14we're going to use this little tool, which doesn't look like much,

0:20:14 > 0:20:17but this is a synthetic material which absorbs gas.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19Now, if we do this...

0:20:22 > 0:20:25..and then we take it to the other can...

0:20:27 > 0:20:28Does James take me for a sucker?

0:20:28 > 0:20:31You can't transfer fizz from one can to another.

0:20:31 > 0:20:36Hopefully, if that's worked, I can take this can, which you shook,

0:20:36 > 0:20:39and you shook and you shook and you shook and you shook,

0:20:39 > 0:20:41and we all shook.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43Stand by, take cover.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46Whoa!

0:20:46 > 0:20:50Whoa, indeed! Great reaction for simply opening a can.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52But where did the fizz go?

0:20:52 > 0:20:54They shook it up good and proper.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56And nothing happens

0:20:56 > 0:21:00because the energy has been transferred over into this lemonade,

0:21:00 > 0:21:04which has been here since the very start and untouched by human hand.

0:21:04 > 0:21:05Now, this won't fizz, will it?

0:21:05 > 0:21:07We'll just open this up...

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Boom! The gases have been transferred -

0:21:10 > 0:21:12not by osmosis but by his magic.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17First, James had the class shake up one can so it was mega-fizzy.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19The other wasn't touched.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Using his magic sucker,

0:21:21 > 0:21:23he transferred the fizz from one to the other.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26It was a fizzy-pop swap-aroo.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29Will Katherine be able to keep a lid on it

0:21:29 > 0:21:32when the gas sends this box out of control?

0:21:32 > 0:21:33Wow, this is so exciting!

0:21:33 > 0:21:36You're actually witnessing a new scientific discovery.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Now it's time for John to reveal the secret in Tricks Of The Trade.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44John will show you how to draw a circle with

0:21:44 > 0:21:48a dot inside it, like this, without removing his pen from the paper.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51Have you worked it out yet?

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Do you use a magical pen?

0:21:53 > 0:21:59Oh, no. Do you move the paper around the pen? Not likely.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01Here's how -

0:22:01 > 0:22:04fold a corner into the middle...

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Draw a dot at the point of the corner.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09Without lifting your pen,

0:22:09 > 0:22:12draw a line towards you over the folded section.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16When you are near the edge, start to draw your circle.

0:22:16 > 0:22:21Then unfold the corner and complete the circle.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24And there you have it.

0:22:24 > 0:22:29A dot inside a circle drawn without removing your pen.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31You need never worry about that problem again.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38Back to the science institution, where James's magic bubbled over.

0:22:38 > 0:22:42Now Katherine's about to put her foot on the gas.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44- Hello, children. ALL:- Hello.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46I've been working on harnessing

0:22:46 > 0:22:49the gas that's produced from carbonation.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53And the idea is that I'll use this gas to be able to power our homes.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56Ah, the power of magic is strong in this one.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59Which would be very economical, it would be very ecofriendly

0:22:59 > 0:23:02and, above all else, it would be completely safe.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Katherine's being very economical with the truth.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08The first thing we need to do is contain the gas, and we do that

0:23:08 > 0:23:13by using just a simple large cardboard box, like this.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15I wondered what that was. It's been in the room the whole time.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18So the great thing is, it's just a cardboard box

0:23:18 > 0:23:20that enables you to recycle it.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Just a plain cardboard box, light as a feather.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25And the next thing you need is a rubber tube,

0:23:25 > 0:23:27which we've attached in the centre of the box.

0:23:27 > 0:23:28As you do.

0:23:28 > 0:23:33And then all you need is your carbonated water. There you go.

0:23:33 > 0:23:38And you simply attach the end of the rubber tube

0:23:38 > 0:23:41onto the mouth of the bottle, and you can see all the fizzy bubbles

0:23:41 > 0:23:44going up there, and that is the bubbles and the gas travelling

0:23:44 > 0:23:48out of the liquid, down the rubber tube and into the cardboard box.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51So let me get this straight - Katherine is saying

0:23:51 > 0:23:53one day we'll be able to power our homes

0:23:53 > 0:23:55using the gas from fizzy water?

0:23:55 > 0:23:57OK, I think that's the first bottle done.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59And so all we need now...

0:23:59 > 0:24:02What's happened to the box? Is that the gas?

0:24:02 > 0:24:04So we're going to put the second bottle in.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07The class have noticed something funny is going on.

0:24:07 > 0:24:08It's behind you, Miss!

0:24:08 > 0:24:10There we go. Let's have a look.

0:24:10 > 0:24:14The class is suspicious. There's something in there, my friend! Gas!

0:24:14 > 0:24:17And you can see all the fizzy bubbles are rising

0:24:17 > 0:24:19all the way back up to the top,

0:24:19 > 0:24:21and it travels all that gas through out of the liquid,

0:24:21 > 0:24:24down the rubber tube and into the cardboard box.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27We need look no more for alternative energy sources -

0:24:27 > 0:24:28they're in our fridge!

0:24:28 > 0:24:30Keep watching that box, though.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Wow, that's really exciting stuff, isn't it? It's very exciting.

0:24:34 > 0:24:35Whoa, it's moving!

0:24:35 > 0:24:36It's moving!

0:24:36 > 0:24:38They couldn't help but notice.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40This class is about to take off in a big way.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43It's exciting, isn't it, children... THEY SHOUT OUT

0:24:43 > 0:24:45..being able to harness this natural gas?

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Katherine's carrying on with the presentation

0:24:48 > 0:24:49and winding the class right up.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52Wow, I've never seen it react like that before. This is strange.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54What an actress.

0:24:54 > 0:24:55Oh, my goodness.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58Oh, I'm going to grab a hold of it here.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01It's become so light it's actually floating.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03Whoa, the box is fully up in the air by the gas power!

0:25:03 > 0:25:07You're actually here witnessing a new scientific discovery!

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Can Katherine get it back under control before the class lose it?

0:25:10 > 0:25:13It's really moving. I'm going to just hold it down a little bit -

0:25:13 > 0:25:15there we go.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Keep the gas in before the secret gets out.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19I wasn't expecting that at all.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21And here's something the class weren't expecting.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Is it Neanderthal man? No, it's someone more familiar.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26Look who it is - it's Fergus!

0:25:26 > 0:25:28I think he's been drinking a little bit too much fizzy drink.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30You're a bit gassy, Fergus.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32The box is powered by a different kind of gas. Poo-ee!

0:25:32 > 0:25:34What have they just seen?

0:25:34 > 0:25:35It's time for the secret to pop out.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37We've got a confession to make.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40- This is Fergus.- And I'm Katherine.

0:25:40 > 0:25:41And I'm James.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44And you are all being filmed right now, this very second.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47There's a camera over there, there's a camera over here

0:25:47 > 0:25:48and there's a camera over there.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50THEY SCREAM

0:25:50 > 0:25:52You're on CBBC's Help! My School Trip is Magic!

0:25:53 > 0:25:57All that, and they haven't even drunk a fizzy drink!

0:25:57 > 0:26:00Like the fizz, the class just went off.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03But what did they think of this effervescent lesson?

0:26:03 > 0:26:06I couldn't believe it, I couldn't even talk.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10Katherine transferred fizz from a bottle into a big brown box

0:26:10 > 0:26:12and it started to move on its own.

0:26:12 > 0:26:13It's moving!

0:26:13 > 0:26:16When we told her that it was shaking, she lifted it up

0:26:16 > 0:26:19and it was, like, kind of like floating in the air.

0:26:19 > 0:26:23You're actually here witnessing a new scientific discovery!

0:26:23 > 0:26:25How was it doing that?! There was nothing underneath it.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28I thought there was nobody in there, but there was someone in there.

0:26:31 > 0:26:32And that someone was Fergus.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35He was obviously making his own gas in there.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37I thought that trick was awesome.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41They can all breathe out now. The magic was awesome

0:26:41 > 0:26:43and they didn't "CO2" it coming.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52I keep my pet mouse in here.

0:26:52 > 0:26:53I call him Boats.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57I know that's a strange name for a mouse, but it's what I call him.

0:26:57 > 0:27:01He drinks loads of fizzy drinks - how come HE doesn't float?

0:27:01 > 0:27:05Oh, that really floats my Boats.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09The mouse's name is Boats.

0:27:09 > 0:27:10That's a joke.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14See you later. But until then, if you're on a school trip

0:27:14 > 0:27:17and you think something magic's going on,

0:27:17 > 0:27:22maybe you'll find yourself shouting, Help! My...School Trip Is Magic!

0:27:22 > 0:27:24What are you doing here?
