0:00:02 > 0:00:03It's a brand new term
0:00:03 > 0:00:05and CBBC has sent these four magicians
0:00:05 > 0:00:06back to school.
0:00:06 > 0:00:09They're pretending to be supply teachers
0:00:09 > 0:00:12so that they can perform amazing magic
0:00:12 > 0:00:14on unsuspecting classes.
0:00:14 > 0:00:16But because you know and love them,
0:00:16 > 0:00:18this time we've cunningly disguised them.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25Then we hid secret cameras all over classrooms
0:00:25 > 0:00:27and watched as they taught spectacular lessons.
0:00:27 > 0:00:28Oh.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31It went flying around, like a magic saucer.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35That was sick.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39It's more magic, it's more outrageous.
0:00:39 > 0:00:40I was just flabbergasted.
0:00:40 > 0:00:43But how long will it take before the classes shout...?
0:00:43 > 0:00:47CROWD OF CHILDREN: Help! My supply teacher is still magic.
0:00:50 > 0:00:51Hello, it's me Iain.
0:00:51 > 0:00:55We're back to school for a new term at
0:00:55 > 0:00:58Help! My Supply Teacher Is Still Magic. You could say it's...
0:00:58 > 0:01:03- DEEP VOICE:- Help My Supply Teacher Is Magic 2, Return Of The Magic.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06Once again we swapped regular teachers with magicians.
0:01:06 > 0:01:10And because you know them, we've disguised them.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12We've been secretly filming the results with special cameras
0:01:12 > 0:01:15hidden in the classrooms.
0:01:15 > 0:01:17Yeah, we're sneakier than a cat dressed up as a huge
0:01:17 > 0:01:20piece of cheese at a hungry mouse convention.
0:01:20 > 0:01:24We're also showing you loads of great tricks, tricks like this.
0:01:25 > 0:01:26The invisible saw.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36Coming up, James's magic is inescapably good,
0:01:36 > 0:01:38but will he get away with it?
0:01:38 > 0:01:41For Fergus's interactive illusion, you'll need a deck of cards.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44Make sure those colours alternate.
0:01:44 > 0:01:47Plus you've been sending in clips of all your best magic tricks.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50And later on, I'll be picking my favourite.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54Shazam, the Wannabe Wizards are back. But first...
0:01:54 > 0:01:58Do you think you'd be able to tell if your teacher started doing magic?
0:01:58 > 0:02:00Do you?
0:02:02 > 0:02:05This is John, he's a great magician and a bit of a joker.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11The disguise is on, cue the dramatic music.
0:02:11 > 0:02:13KAZOO FANFARE
0:02:13 > 0:02:16Not quite mate. Enter year five.
0:02:16 > 0:02:18They don't know it yet, but John's about to give them a lesson
0:02:18 > 0:02:23about sound waves that should have them doing the Mexican wave.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26None of them have noticed the hidden cameras or recognised
0:02:26 > 0:02:28John in his disguise.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30Can he keep it up and will the magic fly?
0:02:30 > 0:02:33Today I'm going to talk to you about sound, and specifically
0:02:33 > 0:02:37about how sound works. Sound is in fact waves.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40It's waves of energy travelling through air or solid
0:02:40 > 0:02:42objects like a table or a wall.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44I'm going to try and demonstrate how powerful sound is,
0:02:44 > 0:02:47and I'm going to try and demonstrate that with a couple of experiments.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50The class is enjoying the lesson already.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52John's convinced them he's a teacher.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Sound waves themselves can be incredibly powerful.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Now I'm going to try and demonstrate how sound could be used to
0:02:58 > 0:02:59move something with one of these.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02This is just a nut and bolt, the type of thing you might
0:03:02 > 0:03:04have at home, maybe holding something together on your bike.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07And normally, if you want to unscrew that nut from the bolt,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09you have to turn it like this and it takes a while
0:03:09 > 0:03:11until it's all the way off.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14I'm going to try and turn that nut off the bolt just using
0:03:14 > 0:03:16the power of sound waves.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19If that sounds impossible, it's because it's magic.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21I'm going to use one of these. This is a kazoo.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23Has anybody ever used a kazoo before?
0:03:23 > 0:03:26Wonderful, you have to hum into it like this.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29HE HUMS That gives you a note, watch.
0:03:29 > 0:03:31Now what I'm going to do is try
0:03:31 > 0:03:34and get what we call the resonant frequency of this particular nut.
0:03:34 > 0:03:38If I get the frequency that resonates with that nut,
0:03:38 > 0:03:41it will hopefully turn the nut completely off the bolt.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43Now it might take me a while to get the note,
0:03:43 > 0:03:45but we're going to give it a try.
0:03:45 > 0:03:46OK, here we go.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52HE PLAYS ASCENDING NOTES
0:03:52 > 0:03:54That's it.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58Whoa, he's making that nut unthread by sound alone.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01- ALL:- Oh.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04It's about to drop off and it's all about to kick off.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06- ALL:- Oh.
0:04:06 > 0:04:08Now isn't that great? It's amazing.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11It's worthy of applause and they don't even know John's a magician.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13Now, I'm going to try a bigger experiment.
0:04:13 > 0:04:17I'm going to attempt to move a table. Now yesterday I was in the school
0:04:17 > 0:04:19and I tried to move one of these tables using just
0:04:19 > 0:04:22the power of sound and we couldn't do it, it was too big, I think.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25So I've brought a table for home, and to do this I need more sound than
0:04:25 > 0:04:28one just one kazoo, so I'm going to give everybody here a kazoo.
0:04:28 > 0:04:30Please don't play a note on it straight away
0:04:30 > 0:04:32because I get headaches very, very easily.
0:04:32 > 0:04:36So wait until after we've all got one and I can tell you what to do. OK.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40So here we are. Everybody have a kazoo there.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42And a kazoo for you too, that's it. And there you are.
0:04:42 > 0:04:46It sounds possible, but it isn't science. It's all a trick.
0:04:46 > 0:04:49OK. I'm going to teach you now how to play a kazoo
0:04:49 > 0:04:52if you've never played one before. You put the wider end in your mouth
0:04:52 > 0:04:54and you've got to hum like this.
0:04:54 > 0:04:55HE HUMS So everybody try that.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58- ALL HUM - Anyone got any ear plugs?
0:04:58 > 0:05:00And stop. This time try doing a little tune.
0:05:00 > 0:05:04HE PLAYS A TUNE Try that.
0:05:04 > 0:05:08THEY COPY HIS TUNE
0:05:10 > 0:05:13Brilliant, in a moment I'm going to ask you all to play the same notes.
0:05:13 > 0:05:16We're going to try and find the resonant frequency of the table
0:05:16 > 0:05:19and see if we can move it slightly. Now I need somebody to help me.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22No shortage of volunteers for a magic assistant, even though
0:05:22 > 0:05:25- they've no idea it's all a trick yet.- Yes, what's your name?
0:05:25 > 0:05:28- Joshua.- Joshua, wonderful. Come and stand over this side.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31OK, Joshua, now do you think you're going to be able to play your kazoo
0:05:31 > 0:05:34while you help me?
0:05:34 > 0:05:36Yes, OK then. Here's what we're going to do.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38Put your kazoo in your mouth.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40OK, now with both hands I want you to grab
0:05:40 > 0:05:42the corner of the tablecloth.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45Now watch the table closely, the magic's coming.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47OK, are you ready everybody?
0:05:47 > 0:05:49On the count of three, I want you to all play this note.
0:05:49 > 0:05:50HE HUMS
0:05:50 > 0:05:52We're going to see if we can move the table
0:05:52 > 0:05:55maybe just a few centimetres towards me.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Ready, one, two, three.
0:05:57 > 0:05:58THEY ALL PLAY THE NOTE
0:06:01 > 0:06:02OK, stop, stop, stop, stop.
0:06:02 > 0:06:05I think we've got the wrong note, listen. Maybe a little bit lower.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08Ahhh.
0:06:08 > 0:06:09THEY COPY HIS NOTE
0:06:09 > 0:06:11Louder. Louder.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18We have lift off.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22The table's floating off the ground by the sound of the kazoos,
0:06:22 > 0:06:25- or so the class think. - Oh.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29Oh.
0:06:29 > 0:06:30Oh.
0:06:33 > 0:06:38OK, whoa, stop, stop, stop, stop!
0:06:40 > 0:06:44Wow, that lesson was way up there with the best,
0:06:44 > 0:06:47and John's about to reveal the truth.
0:06:47 > 0:06:52That was incredible, so much better than yesterday's class who tried
0:06:52 > 0:06:55to move one of these tables, and you can see how powerful sound is.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58Sound is so powerful that it can move a table.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01But I have got a little bit of a confession to make.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05- I'm not really a teacher at all, I'm actually a magician.- Oh, wow.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08And you've been set up by your teachers and your family
0:07:08 > 0:07:11and your head teachers. You're going to be on a CBBC show called
0:07:11 > 0:07:13Help! My Supply Teacher's Magic.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16And there's a camera here. There's a camera here.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18There's a camera at the back.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23John's sonic lesson went boom.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26But what noises did the class make about it?
0:07:26 > 0:07:30It was magic. Abracadabra.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33There was one place this lesson and the table were going,
0:07:33 > 0:07:35and that was up.
0:07:35 > 0:07:37OK, whoa, stop, stop, stop!
0:07:37 > 0:07:40It just started going crazy and haywire and off it just went,
0:07:40 > 0:07:42flying around like a magic saucer.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45I thought it was going to hit one of the people in the head.
0:07:45 > 0:07:50An incredible trick, and the class had no idea John was a magician.
0:07:50 > 0:07:52How long would it take for you to shout?
0:07:52 > 0:07:56- CROWD OF CHILDREN:- Help! My supply teacher is still magic.
0:07:59 > 0:08:01Later on, you'll see what happened
0:08:01 > 0:08:05when James went undercover at another school.
0:08:05 > 0:08:09He's all in chains and he's going to mess with their brains.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11Right now though, Katherine's at a fairground
0:08:11 > 0:08:14and she's about to get up close and magical.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17Lucy or Diya, have either of you ever ripped your clothes
0:08:17 > 0:08:20- while playing or doing sports or anything?- No.- Yes.
0:08:20 > 0:08:21Now you haven't, you have, Lucy.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24And have you had to sew it back up together again or do you just
0:08:24 > 0:08:27- throw them away?- I just leave it. - You just leave it?
0:08:27 > 0:08:30OK, well, do you know what happened to me this morning?
0:08:30 > 0:08:33On my way here, I actually ripped a hole in my jeans
0:08:33 > 0:08:35and these are new jeans, so I'm a little bit upset about it.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38But, because I'm a magician, all I have to do is just
0:08:38 > 0:08:41rub my hands together like this
0:08:41 > 0:08:44and rub the tear.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46What is Katherine doing?
0:08:46 > 0:08:52And it actually mends itself and completely disappears.
0:08:52 > 0:08:57- Cool.- She made the rip disappear. That demands a rewind.
0:08:59 > 0:09:01And rub the tear.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05She rubbed her hands together and rubbed the rip clean off.
0:09:05 > 0:09:10- It actually mends itself and completely disappears.- Cool.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13- Oh!- Oh!
0:09:13 > 0:09:15- That is really clever.- Yeah.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18Nice one, Katherine. Obviously magic's in your jeans.
0:09:18 > 0:09:21- She went like this...- Like really fast.- And then she like...
0:09:21 > 0:09:23She just rubbed it and then it disappeared.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25She went like that and then it disappeared.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28And then in her hands... It just vanished.
0:09:28 > 0:09:33- It was amazing.- It was just really cool.- Yeah.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36Now James is going to set you a magical challenge
0:09:36 > 0:09:37in Tricks Of The Trade.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40If you fancy yourself as a magician here's a trick you can
0:09:40 > 0:09:42try on your mates.
0:09:42 > 0:09:47James has got a ketchup sachet and a plastic bottle of water.
0:09:47 > 0:09:49After putting the ketchup into the bottle
0:09:49 > 0:09:52and screwing the lid back on, he's going to show you how to make
0:09:52 > 0:09:56the ketchup rise and fall with the power of your mind.
0:09:56 > 0:09:57Can you work out how to do it?
0:09:59 > 0:10:02Keep watching and you'll find out later in the show.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04It's going to be incredible.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09Right now, we have something amazing for you.
0:10:09 > 0:10:11Have you got your deck of cards ready?
0:10:11 > 0:10:13This is the interactive illusion.
0:10:13 > 0:10:15This is a trick where you can take part at home.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18So come on, you need to pay close attention
0:10:18 > 0:10:20get in nice and close.
0:10:20 > 0:10:23You're still too far away.
0:10:23 > 0:10:27Ha, ha, that's better. Here's Fergus.
0:10:28 > 0:10:32Go on, get your deck of cards ready now.
0:10:32 > 0:10:37Go through the deck and take out the four kings.
0:10:37 > 0:10:41Do that now. Remove all four kings from the deck
0:10:41 > 0:10:44and put the rest of the deck to one side.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47We're only going to use these four kings.
0:10:47 > 0:10:51I want you to keep the kings face up
0:10:51 > 0:10:55so that you can see all four of them.
0:10:55 > 0:10:59Arrange them in your hands in an alternating order,
0:10:59 > 0:11:02with a red card closest to you.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05So the order would go, red king,
0:11:05 > 0:11:10black king, red king,
0:11:10 > 0:11:15then a black king. Make sure those colours alternate.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17Red, black, red, black.
0:11:17 > 0:11:22But the suits can be in any order, that's up to you.
0:11:22 > 0:11:27Whatever card is at the face of the packet will be a red suit.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31I want you to spell that suit moving one
0:11:31 > 0:11:36card from the face of the packet all the way to the back for each letter.
0:11:36 > 0:11:39So if, like me, you're looking at the king of hearts,
0:11:39 > 0:11:43you'd spell hearts, moving one card for each letter
0:11:43 > 0:11:49and don't forget to include the S, just like this.
0:11:49 > 0:11:55H-E-A-R-T-S.
0:11:55 > 0:12:01Moving one card from the front to the back for each letter.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04Do that now for the suit you're looking at,
0:12:04 > 0:12:08which will be either hearts or diamonds.
0:12:13 > 0:12:17Now take the card which you were looking at
0:12:17 > 0:12:20and throw it away to one side.
0:12:21 > 0:12:27Whatever king is now facing you, I want you to spell that suit,
0:12:27 > 0:12:31moving one card for each letter from the front to the very
0:12:31 > 0:12:34back of the packet, just like we did before.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36Do that for me now.
0:12:41 > 0:12:45Whatever king you are now looking at, take it
0:12:45 > 0:12:48and throw it away to one side.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51You're now holding two kings.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54Mix them around as much as you want.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59Are you done? Good.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02Now whichever king you were looking at,
0:13:02 > 0:13:05I want you to spell that suit just like we did earlier.
0:13:05 > 0:13:13Move one card for each letter and don't forget the S, do that now.
0:13:20 > 0:13:26One final time, throw to one side that card you are now looking at.
0:13:29 > 0:13:34Concentrate on that remaining card.
0:13:35 > 0:13:39I don't know what order the card started in or how you mixed them,
0:13:39 > 0:13:44but I'm going to try and work out which card you're holding onto.
0:13:44 > 0:13:47Concentrate on it.
0:13:47 > 0:13:49It's black...
0:13:49 > 0:13:52it's the king of clubs.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55Did it work for you?
0:13:55 > 0:13:58Wow, well the quantity of the magic is exhausting and the quality
0:13:58 > 0:14:00so good, I've forgotten my own name.
0:14:02 > 0:14:03HE LAUGHS
0:14:03 > 0:14:07It's Iain. Anyhow, I feel like I've earned a sit down, but before I do,
0:14:07 > 0:14:08let's have a look at what's coming up.
0:14:08 > 0:14:10It's all kinds of ridiculousness.
0:14:10 > 0:14:14James reveals his secret in Tricks Of The Trade.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16Have you worked it out yet?
0:14:16 > 0:14:19Katherine gets up close and magical with a trick that's on the money.
0:14:19 > 0:14:21Oh, oh, oh.
0:14:21 > 0:14:25And watch what happens when James goes undercover in another school.
0:14:25 > 0:14:28Will he fool the class, or will they realise
0:14:28 > 0:14:30the supply teacher is still magic?
0:14:30 > 0:14:34Whoo. Each week I'm bringing you another of our new favourite magic
0:14:34 > 0:14:39movers and shakers doing tricks in cribs, yards and front rooms.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41We call them the Wannabe Wizards.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43So I've got my comfy chair.
0:14:45 > 0:14:47I've got my computer to watch the magic on.
0:14:47 > 0:14:50Oh, and I need my headphones.
0:14:50 > 0:14:54- HE SHOUTS:- The neighbours have complained about the noise.
0:14:54 > 0:14:57Let's do this already!
0:14:57 > 0:14:59We asked you to send in clips of yourself
0:14:59 > 0:15:01performing your best magic tricks.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04We received loads of clips from all over the country.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07Each episode I will be choosing a favourite Wannabe Wizard
0:15:07 > 0:15:09and showing them to you guys.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12My Wannabe Wizard this time is from London.
0:15:12 > 0:15:16He's about to earn his place at the top table.
0:15:16 > 0:15:21Hi, so I have a coin, a glass and some paper towels.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24And what I'm going to do is make the coin go through the table.
0:15:26 > 0:15:30So I'll cover it with the glass and this paper towel.
0:15:34 > 0:15:38OK. Three, two, one. Oh.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41If at first you don't succeed.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44OK. That didn't work that time, but let's try again.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47One, two, three.
0:15:47 > 0:15:51Oh, OK. It doesn't matter, we'll try one more time.
0:15:51 > 0:15:55One, two, three.
0:16:00 > 0:16:01Well, coin's still here...
0:16:05 > 0:16:07..and the glass went through the table.
0:16:07 > 0:16:11Incredible. Let's get a rewind.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13One, two, three.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18The glass disappeared through the table instead of the coin.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21Well, coin's still here.
0:16:21 > 0:16:24Don't try that with a glass on your table
0:16:24 > 0:16:27unless you're Curran, who's my Wannabe Wizard this time.
0:16:27 > 0:16:29Thank you.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33Now it's time for James to reveal this secret in Tricks Of The Trade.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36James will show you how to make a ketchup sachet
0:16:36 > 0:16:41in a bottle of water rise and fall with the power of your mind.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44Come on, have you worked it out? How many of you got it?
0:16:44 > 0:16:49Maybe it's a magical ketchup sachet. Nah, of course it isn't. Come on.
0:16:49 > 0:16:52The trick is actually quite simple.
0:16:52 > 0:16:55Once the sachet is in the bottle and sealed with the lid,
0:16:55 > 0:16:59if you squeeze the base of the bottle, it'll make the sachet fall.
0:16:59 > 0:17:01If you release the base, the sachet will rise.
0:17:01 > 0:17:03Then use your other hand to make it seem as
0:17:03 > 0:17:06if it's controlling the movement of the sachet.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08How about that? Did you get it?
0:17:08 > 0:17:10Are you amazing already?
0:17:10 > 0:17:13Now you've all got something to show off with in the playground.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18Next Katherine is at a farm, getting up close and magical.
0:17:18 > 0:17:21What I've got on me are these two different coins.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23So I want you all to have a look at them for me and tell me,
0:17:23 > 0:17:25do you recognise them at all?
0:17:25 > 0:17:28- No.- You don't recognise them? - 1969?- No, I don't.
0:17:28 > 0:17:30No, OK. This coin here is
0:17:30 > 0:17:32an old English penny.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35And this coin is...
0:17:35 > 0:17:40- Yeah, it's an American coin. It's an American half dollar.- Hmm.
0:17:40 > 0:17:45So in this hand I've got three copper old English pennies,
0:17:45 > 0:17:49and I've got three silver American half dollars in this hand.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53And what I'd like you to do, Sophia, is bring both your hands out
0:17:53 > 0:17:55with your palms up, that's perfect.
0:17:55 > 0:17:57And just going to show you
0:17:57 > 0:18:02that I've got one, two,
0:18:02 > 0:18:05three copper coins,
0:18:05 > 0:18:08and one, two,
0:18:08 > 0:18:11three silver coins.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14Now what I'm going to do is that I'm going to swap around the two
0:18:14 > 0:18:17middle coins, OK.
0:18:17 > 0:18:21So now the copper coin is sandwiched in between the two silver coins and
0:18:21 > 0:18:26the silver coin is now sandwiched in between the two copper coins.
0:18:26 > 0:18:27Now wouldn't it be amazing
0:18:27 > 0:18:31if these two coins could switch places by magic?
0:18:31 > 0:18:34- That would be amazing wouldn't it? - Yeah.
0:18:34 > 0:18:36OK, so what I'd like you to do is just...
0:18:37 > 0:18:42..close your hand for me, like that, and watch the middle coin, OK.
0:18:43 > 0:18:45SHE BLOWS ON IT
0:18:45 > 0:18:48And look, can you see, it's changed into the silver one?
0:18:48 > 0:18:52- So I've got three silver ones here and you...- Oh, oh, oh.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56..have got three copper ones over here.
0:18:56 > 0:19:00That is truly amazing, let's get a rewind.
0:19:00 > 0:19:02- OK. - Katherine blew on her hand
0:19:02 > 0:19:05and changed the copper coin for a silver one.
0:19:05 > 0:19:07..Silver one, so I've got three silver ones...
0:19:07 > 0:19:10And the copper coin appeared in Sophia's hands.
0:19:10 > 0:19:14- It's going to get better. - Three copper ones over here.
0:19:14 > 0:19:18- OK, so let's do that again but this time...- My gosh.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20..we're going to do this all in your hands,
0:19:20 > 0:19:22- and you're going to do the magic. - What?- OK?
0:19:24 > 0:19:27OK, so open up your hands for me.
0:19:30 > 0:19:32OK, so we've got one copper.
0:19:32 > 0:19:36One silver, one copper, one silver,
0:19:36 > 0:19:39one copper, one silver.
0:19:39 > 0:19:44Remember the coins in Sophia's hand alternate between copper and silver.
0:19:44 > 0:19:48All I want you to do is, Sophia, is fold them in your hand like that,
0:19:48 > 0:19:49and give a big blow.
0:19:51 > 0:19:52That's perfect.
0:19:52 > 0:19:58- And now open up your hand, and you can see they've all separated.- Oh.
0:19:58 > 0:20:02So we've got one, two, three silver coins
0:20:02 > 0:20:08and one, two, three copper coins. Isn't that amazing?
0:20:08 > 0:20:11- I know how they do it. - Do you?- No you don't, Oscar.
0:20:11 > 0:20:13They blow it and they just switch.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15- Absolutely right, that's exactly what happens.- Oh!
0:20:15 > 0:20:18That's how the magic was done.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21The coins were alternating copper and silver, but they became
0:20:21 > 0:20:24all copper and all silver with a magic blow of the hand.
0:20:24 > 0:20:28- And you can see they've all separated.- Oh!
0:20:28 > 0:20:31- Incredible.- Amazing.- Incredible.
0:20:31 > 0:20:33Double incredible!
0:20:34 > 0:20:36I was going to do a trick with money,
0:20:36 > 0:20:39but I couldn't find any coins.
0:20:39 > 0:20:40No change there then!
0:20:44 > 0:20:46OK, it's time for more school magic
0:20:46 > 0:20:49and now it's James pretending to be a supply teacher
0:20:49 > 0:20:51and trying to fool another class.
0:20:51 > 0:20:55The wig is on, the hidden cameras are set.
0:20:55 > 0:20:56Break time's over, though.
0:20:56 > 0:20:59The bell's about to go and it's time for magic.
0:21:01 > 0:21:03Enter Year Four. They don't know it yet,
0:21:03 > 0:21:06but they're about to get an incredible lesson
0:21:06 > 0:21:09about crime and punishment that will tie their minds in knots.
0:21:09 > 0:21:13So far, none of them have noticed the hidden cameras in their hall
0:21:13 > 0:21:15or recognised James as our magician.
0:21:15 > 0:21:19But this will be one history lesson that they'll remember for all time.
0:21:19 > 0:21:21Now, I work in a museum.
0:21:21 > 0:21:25And I'm here to tell you today about history.
0:21:25 > 0:21:26And my area of expertise
0:21:26 > 0:21:30is the history of law enforcement and the police.
0:21:30 > 0:21:34James is pretending to be a historian this time, very sneaky.
0:21:34 > 0:21:37The first period we're going to look at today is the Medieval period,
0:21:37 > 0:21:41which is over 2,000 years ago.
0:21:41 > 0:21:43That's even older than some of your teachers.
0:21:43 > 0:21:46- Oh.- But not all, just some.
0:21:46 > 0:21:49Now these days, what do the police use to restrain people,
0:21:49 > 0:21:52- what do they use? Yeah?- Handcuffs.
0:21:52 > 0:21:53Handcuffs, yeah.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55But that's now, see 2,000 years ago,
0:21:55 > 0:21:58the police didn't have the intricate bits of machinery
0:21:58 > 0:22:00to make all the difficult locks did they?
0:22:00 > 0:22:03A bit of genuine history to help convince the class
0:22:03 > 0:22:06the lesson is real before he does the magic.
0:22:06 > 0:22:08They had much more primitive methods.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11Now one of the methods was this.
0:22:11 > 0:22:15This would be stuck in the ground and the prisoner would
0:22:15 > 0:22:18have their thumbs tied on the other side so they couldn't get through.
0:22:18 > 0:22:22In fact, I've got some string here. Shall we try it?
0:22:22 > 0:22:26James is about to string them along and they don't suspect a thing.
0:22:26 > 0:22:28Could you help me, is that OK?
0:22:28 > 0:22:30This is one of their regular teachers, Miss Ryan.
0:22:30 > 0:22:34She's about to help with the magic, though she doesn't know how.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37So what would happen is the prisoner would put his hands
0:22:37 > 0:22:40this side of the pole and you can see that's through my thumbs.
0:22:40 > 0:22:42Could you tie a nice tight knot on the top, please?
0:22:42 > 0:22:44- I will.- Tight as you can.- OK.
0:22:44 > 0:22:47Make it nice and tight, go on, a bit tighter oh, ooh.
0:22:47 > 0:22:49Ow, that's very tight.
0:22:49 > 0:22:50And again, excellent,
0:22:50 > 0:22:53and just give it a little pull to show that's tight there, yeah.
0:22:53 > 0:22:56Try and get your finger in that knot and give it a pull as well.
0:22:56 > 0:23:00- Can you feel that that's tight?- It's really tight.- That's very tight.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02There's nothing ropey about this trick coming up.
0:23:02 > 0:23:06Now the prisoner would obviously be tied to the pole.
0:23:06 > 0:23:10Sometimes days at a time. Now, if the pole was a lot higher than this
0:23:10 > 0:23:13he couldn't go over the top. He couldn't go through the bottom.
0:23:13 > 0:23:16But some people, because they'd been arrested so many times,
0:23:16 > 0:23:17they knew the secret of getting out.
0:23:17 > 0:23:22Just, let's see. One, two, three. Oh!
0:23:22 > 0:23:23Did you see that?
0:23:23 > 0:23:26His hands were tied round the pole but he melted off it.
0:23:26 > 0:23:28Can you see that that's still tight?
0:23:28 > 0:23:30Can you give that a little pull and that a pull?
0:23:30 > 0:23:32And his hands are still tied together.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34- Can you see that's tight? Is that still tight?- Yeah.
0:23:34 > 0:23:36It is, isn't it? In fact, I think I'm going to need a hand
0:23:36 > 0:23:38to get out of this, so could you please cut me out?
0:23:38 > 0:23:41- OK.- Excellent. Be very careful and...
0:23:41 > 0:23:44Oh, that's very tight, there we go.
0:23:44 > 0:23:47Oh, that hurt. Oh, much better.
0:23:47 > 0:23:50Now, a little bit later than the Medieval period
0:23:50 > 0:23:52came my favourite piece of apparatus.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55I've brought this especially from the museum today.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57This...
0:23:57 > 0:23:58is called...
0:23:58 > 0:24:00a Steinmeyer.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02Look at that.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05Now this was used in Germany in the 1600s.
0:24:05 > 0:24:10And what would happen, the prisoner would stand like this
0:24:10 > 0:24:13and chains would go left and right all the way up.
0:24:13 > 0:24:15And then they would be padlocked in like this
0:24:15 > 0:24:18and then a curtain would be drawn around them
0:24:18 > 0:24:20to isolate them from the rest of the town.
0:24:20 > 0:24:24- It's not very pleasant is it? Shall I get in?- Yeah.
0:24:24 > 0:24:26Shall I get in? Sarah, could you come and help me?
0:24:26 > 0:24:28This is Sarah, my assistant.
0:24:28 > 0:24:30The class thinks she's James's museum assistant,
0:24:30 > 0:24:32but she's actually a magician's assistant.
0:24:32 > 0:24:36So this is going to be pretty loud, cos this thing makes a bit of noise.
0:24:36 > 0:24:39But what Sarah's going to do is she's going to link the chains
0:24:39 > 0:24:40all the way through, just like this.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42So if we start there, Sarah, that'd be great.
0:24:42 > 0:24:46I know you don't have chains or one of these at home.
0:24:46 > 0:24:49But if you did, please don't try any of this.
0:24:49 > 0:24:51Excellent, and you can see that's really tight round my legs.
0:24:51 > 0:24:53And then another one.
0:24:55 > 0:24:59Oh, no. Oh!
0:24:59 > 0:25:01Oh, this is uncomfortable.
0:25:01 > 0:25:03Well and truly chained and framed.
0:25:03 > 0:25:06Will James get away with his magic trick?
0:25:06 > 0:25:09More importantly, can he get away from it?
0:25:09 > 0:25:10Oh.
0:25:12 > 0:25:15Last one. Last one. OK.
0:25:15 > 0:25:18Sarah, if you could put a padlock on, just down here,
0:25:18 > 0:25:19if you could secure it?
0:25:20 > 0:25:23This is very tight and uncomfortable.
0:25:24 > 0:25:28Just perfect for holding dangerously good magicians.
0:25:28 > 0:25:31Now, as well as being chained up,
0:25:31 > 0:25:34- do you remember what else I said would happen?- The curtain.
0:25:34 > 0:25:37The curtain would be pulled, so can we pull the curtain?
0:25:37 > 0:25:38Watch this closely.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41His assistant Sarah is pulling the curtain on James,
0:25:41 > 0:25:42who is chained, right?
0:25:48 > 0:25:49- What?- Huh?
0:25:53 > 0:25:57But...everything is easy to get out of once you know the secret.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00James is free and his assistant is now locked up.
0:26:00 > 0:26:02That's amazing magic.
0:26:02 > 0:26:04- What do you think, shall we let her out?- Yeah.
0:26:04 > 0:26:08Yeah, let's let her out. Lucky I've got some keys.
0:26:08 > 0:26:11Whoa, she really is shackled in tight. How did that happen?
0:26:11 > 0:26:14Surely it was James who was in the chains?
0:26:15 > 0:26:17Out of there, watch your face.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21James has unlocked Sarah
0:26:21 > 0:26:23and now he's about to offer the key to this trick.
0:26:23 > 0:26:28How about giving Sarah a little clap? Excellent, well done, Sarah.
0:26:30 > 0:26:33Now, now that I've done that, would you like me to tell you the secret?
0:26:33 > 0:26:34ALL: Yeah.
0:26:34 > 0:26:37Do you want to know the secret to how all this works? ALL: Yeah.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40Well the secret is, I'm not really from a museum.
0:26:41 > 0:26:43I'm actually a magician.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48And not only that, your teachers know I'm a magician
0:26:48 > 0:26:50and your parents know I'm a magician.
0:26:50 > 0:26:54And you're secretly being filmed right now on hidden cameras
0:26:54 > 0:26:58in that box there and over there and over there
0:26:58 > 0:27:02for Help! My Supply Teacher is Magic on CBBC.
0:27:02 > 0:27:03- ALL:- Oh!
0:27:03 > 0:27:07James's lock down trick had the class all hyped up.
0:27:07 > 0:27:09But did it leave them tongue tied?
0:27:09 > 0:27:12I was thinking, why, how did he do that?
0:27:12 > 0:27:15James was well and truly chained up.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17It was really magic.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20It certainly was. James was free in a flash.
0:27:20 > 0:27:23He's out and the woman's in it already.
0:27:24 > 0:27:27Amazingly, they swapped places. But how?
0:27:27 > 0:27:29Huh?
0:27:31 > 0:27:34An incredible trick, and this class didn't realise.
0:27:41 > 0:27:44See you later, but until then, if you're at school and you think
0:27:44 > 0:27:47something magical's occurring, maybe you'll find yourselves shouting,
0:27:47 > 0:27:52Help! My Supply Teacher Is Still Magic.
