0:00:02 > 0:00:04It's a brand new term, and CBBC has sent these four magicians
0:00:04 > 0:00:06back to school.
0:00:06 > 0:00:09They're pretending to be supply teachers so that they can
0:00:09 > 0:00:14perform amazing magic on unsuspecting classes,
0:00:14 > 0:00:16but because you know and love them,
0:00:16 > 0:00:18this time we've cunningly disguised them.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26Then we hid secret cameras all over classrooms and watched as
0:00:26 > 0:00:28they taught spectacular lessons.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31It was just flying around like a magic saucer.
0:00:33 > 0:00:34That was sick.
0:00:36 > 0:00:39It's more magic, it's more outrageous.
0:00:39 > 0:00:41I was just flabbergasted.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44But how long will it take before the classes shout...
0:00:44 > 0:00:48- CHILDREN:- Help! My supply teacher is still magic!
0:00:48 > 0:00:52Hello, it's me Iain, and welcome back to school for a new term.
0:00:52 > 0:00:56It's Help! My Supply Teacher Is Still Magic.
0:00:56 > 0:00:57You could say it's
0:00:57 > 0:01:02- DEEP VOICE:- Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic Two, even more magic.
0:01:02 > 0:01:06Once again, we've swapped regular teachers with magicians
0:01:06 > 0:01:10and because you know them, we've disguised them.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12We've filmed the results with special cameras
0:01:12 > 0:01:14hidden in the classrooms.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17Yep, we're cleverer than a black belt in Sudoku.
0:01:17 > 0:01:19We're also showing you loads of other great tricks,
0:01:19 > 0:01:22tricks like this.
0:01:22 > 0:01:24Check out this rope so both ends connect in the middle.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26Then I just and...
0:01:26 > 0:01:28- SLIDE WHISTLE - Erm...
0:01:30 > 0:01:33I'll get back to you on that one.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35Just check out these clips.
0:01:35 > 0:01:39Katherine teaches a lesson on being green, and produces a white
0:01:39 > 0:01:42- flower out of the blue. - ..and flourish.- Wow.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46For John's interactive illusion you will need a deck of cards.
0:01:46 > 0:01:50Plus you've been sending in clips of all your best magic tricks,
0:01:50 > 0:01:53and later on I'll be picking my favourite.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57Yes, the wannabe wizards are back for another spell but first...
0:01:57 > 0:02:01Do you think you'd be able to tell if your teacher started doing magic?
0:02:01 > 0:02:04Do you?
0:02:04 > 0:02:09This is Katherine - she's both a classy and crafty magician.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13The disguise is ready, the hidden cameras are set.
0:02:13 > 0:02:16Enter year four, they're about to see a magical lesson about
0:02:16 > 0:02:19the environment but haven't noticed their surroundings have
0:02:19 > 0:02:22been changed by hiding cameras in the classroom.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25They haven't recognised Katherine as our magician either,
0:02:25 > 0:02:28but they're about to get a lesson about being green that's the best
0:02:28 > 0:02:29I've ever seen.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31Good morning, everyone.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33I'm going to be taking your geography lesson today,
0:02:33 > 0:02:37and what we're learning about is recycling.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41Now us human beings are creating far too much waste,
0:02:41 > 0:02:44and we're running out of places to put it so we're finding it more
0:02:44 > 0:02:49and more difficult to get rid of our waste without polluting our planet.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52There's nothing rubbish about this trick coming up, though.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Now most of us, at home, don't think anything about just
0:02:55 > 0:02:59throwing our rubbish into our bins and then the rubbish man comes
0:02:59 > 0:03:03along, takes it away and throws it into a big hole, which is called a
0:03:03 > 0:03:07landfill and it just gets left there to decompose for many, many years.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09So if you think about it,
0:03:09 > 0:03:12it's almost as if our bins don't even have a bottom.
0:03:12 > 0:03:16There's no bottom on that bin, that's important.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20Our rubbish gets thrown in, left on the ground and left to rot away.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23So today I thought it would be a really, really fun idea
0:03:23 > 0:03:25if we made a recycling bin.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28- Would you like to do that? ALL:- Yes.- Yeah? Brilliant.
0:03:28 > 0:03:33So what I've brought with me today is this,
0:03:33 > 0:03:36which is a recycling machine.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38So to make this work,
0:03:38 > 0:03:41what we're gonna do, is make sure our bin is nice and clean
0:03:41 > 0:03:47and we can put that inside and make sure, the machine is nice and clean.
0:03:47 > 0:03:52They're both empty, no funny business going on there.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56So what I've brought with me today is a plastic bottle.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58Now, a plastic bottle is a great thing to recycle,
0:03:58 > 0:04:02because it takes about 500 years for one of these to decompose.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05We're gonna have a go at recycling this today, so let's put it into
0:04:05 > 0:04:08the bin and I want all of you on the count of three to shout recycle.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10- Can you do that? ALL:- Yes.- Brilliant.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13OK, so one, two, three.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15- ALL:- Recycle!
0:04:15 > 0:04:21Brilliant. Now it shouldn't take long and there you go,
0:04:21 > 0:04:24we've got ourselves a brand new bottle of water.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27Whoa, how did that happen?
0:04:27 > 0:04:30Now something else that I thought would be a great idea to recycle
0:04:30 > 0:04:32is some of my post.
0:04:32 > 0:04:36Now, if you're gonna recycle your personal letters it's a good idea
0:04:36 > 0:04:40to shred them first, so no-one can find out any of your information.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43So if we just shred this first of all...
0:04:43 > 0:04:45MACHINE WHIRS
0:04:47 > 0:04:50Like that. So there you go.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53Now before we put that in let's just check...
0:04:53 > 0:04:56No gizmos hidden inside her recycling bin thingy.
0:04:56 > 0:05:01..our bin is nice and clean, and our recycling machine is nice
0:05:01 > 0:05:08and clean. So, let's pop in all of the shredded paper.
0:05:08 > 0:05:13Well and truly shredded. But coming up is a mind-shredding trick.
0:05:13 > 0:05:14And I think we're ready to recycle.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17So, on the count of three everyone, can everyone say it with me?
0:05:17 > 0:05:20- One, two, three... Recycle! ALL:- Recycle!
0:05:22 > 0:05:26And it shouldn't take too long, and there you go -
0:05:26 > 0:05:33we've got ourselves a brand new recycled envelope and letter.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35Whoa, the letter was in tiny pieces,
0:05:35 > 0:05:37and now it's been fully restored!
0:05:37 > 0:05:39Have I convinced you all to recycle?
0:05:39 > 0:05:42- ALL:- Yes.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45Yes? Good. So I hope you're not gonna be throwing away
0:05:45 > 0:05:46all of your rubbish in the bin.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48What I hope you're gonna be doing is throwing
0:05:48 > 0:05:52in your recycling bin, keeping our planet clean and tidy,
0:05:52 > 0:05:57and allowing our plants to grow and flourish.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59Boom, a flower in bloom.
0:05:59 > 0:06:03- The machine was empty.- Where did Katherine get that flower?
0:06:03 > 0:06:06Do you know what I realised?
0:06:06 > 0:06:09This letter that was recycled actually has secret information,
0:06:09 > 0:06:11do you want me to tell you what it says?
0:06:11 > 0:06:13- ALL:- Yes!
0:06:13 > 0:06:15It's time for Katherine to spill the magic beans.
0:06:15 > 0:06:21This is what it says - "Dear class, things are not what they seem.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24"The lady in front of you is not a real teacher."
0:06:24 > 0:06:26That's me.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28And it wasn't a real lesson
0:06:28 > 0:06:32because you're all being filmed right now with hidden cameras over
0:06:32 > 0:06:34there and over there and over there cos you're gonna be on
0:06:34 > 0:06:36Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic.
0:06:38 > 0:06:40Katherine's recycling trick was awesome,
0:06:40 > 0:06:44but did it make the class giddy, and turn them green?
0:06:44 > 0:06:47I thought it was just, like, breathtaking.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49Katherine took their breath away,
0:06:49 > 0:06:52and caught them out with her magical recycling device.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55She showed us it was empty,
0:06:55 > 0:07:00and then put a scrunched up bottle of water in, spun the wheel
0:07:00 > 0:07:03round and it turned into a bottle full of water, which was just weird.
0:07:04 > 0:07:07This trick had a lot of bottle, and a bunch of flowers.
0:07:08 > 0:07:12The flower just popped out of nowhere and I was like,
0:07:12 > 0:07:14"No, this is freaking me out now."
0:07:14 > 0:07:18It was really, really weird. I liked it.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21An incredible trick, and it took the class a while to realise
0:07:21 > 0:07:23Katherine was a magician.
0:07:23 > 0:07:25How long would it take for you to shout?
0:07:25 > 0:07:29- CHILDREN:- Help! My supply teacher is still magic!
0:07:31 > 0:07:33Later on, you'll see what happened
0:07:33 > 0:07:36when John went undercover at another school.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40Not only did it spell trouble, it also spelled magic.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42Right now though, Fergus is at a farm,
0:07:42 > 0:07:45and he's ready to get up close and magical.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Could you hold onto that for me for the moment?
0:07:48 > 0:07:51And do you have on you a ten pound note, five, 20, anything?
0:07:51 > 0:07:55- Just some sort of note. - Got a tenner.- Fantastic.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59Could you take the note and scribble your name nice
0:07:59 > 0:08:01and big across the note for me?
0:08:07 > 0:08:09Lovely. Thank you.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11And then could you just show that to the camera for me?
0:08:13 > 0:08:17Nina, brilliant. I'm gonna swap that for that. Lovely.
0:08:17 > 0:08:25Now if I screw this up, into a very, very small ball.
0:08:25 > 0:08:28Boys, I'd like you to have a look, you'll see there's a cup
0:08:28 > 0:08:31and a saucer, and I'd like you to have a look at the cup
0:08:31 > 0:08:33and the saucer, just make sure they're normal.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36You can touch them, pick them up, make sure they're regular.
0:08:36 > 0:08:40- Yep, they are.- Yeah? Could you pick up the cup for me, Ryan?
0:08:40 > 0:08:43And I'd like you to put it on top of the note, so it covers the note.
0:08:43 > 0:08:46- Like this?- Yeah, brilliant.
0:08:46 > 0:08:50Now, how amazing would it be if I could get that ten-pound note
0:08:50 > 0:08:53out from under the cup, without touching the cup?
0:08:53 > 0:08:56- That would be amazing. - That would be incredible.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59What about if I had my hands in my pockets, and I could STILL get
0:08:59 > 0:09:01the ten-pound note out from under the cup without touching the cup?
0:09:01 > 0:09:04- Wouldn't that be incredible? - Yeah, that'd be even better.
0:09:04 > 0:09:09Ready, three, two, one. Nina, have a look.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13See, I said I wouldn't touch the cup.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15Sneaky Fergus. Let's see some real magic.
0:09:16 > 0:09:20But watch very closely. Can you see the note in the cup, yeah?
0:09:20 > 0:09:22- Can you see that there?- Yeah.
0:09:22 > 0:09:26So if the note goes from the cup, to my hand, to my pocket,
0:09:26 > 0:09:29- where's the note?- In your pocket. - Yeah, very good.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33But if I tap my pocket, tap the cup, the note returns again.
0:09:33 > 0:09:34What? It's back in the cup.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37Ryan can you hold out your hand for me?
0:09:37 > 0:09:40I want you to let everyone know the moment you feel anything.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42So the note's in Fergus' pocket?
0:09:42 > 0:09:45- Do you feel anything yet?- No. - Nothing's happened yet.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Just let us know the moment you feel anything.
0:09:48 > 0:09:49It'll be incredible.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54- Yes.- Yeah? In your hand? Did you feel that land?- Yeah.
0:09:54 > 0:09:58The note went from Fergus' pocket to Ryan's hand.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01Could you hold the saucer and the cup, Nina?
0:10:01 > 0:10:03With both hands on the saucer, lovely.
0:10:03 > 0:10:04Now do you know what happens if I take the note
0:10:04 > 0:10:07and I hit that on top of the cup? Do you know what happens?
0:10:07 > 0:10:12- It'll go in the cup.- We get a lime. Have a look, check it out.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14A lime? I didn't see that coming.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17Now I don't suppose anyone's got on them
0:10:17 > 0:10:20a kind of like a...corer, or anything like that? No?
0:10:20 > 0:10:22No.
0:10:22 > 0:10:24It's quite an unusual request, I know.
0:10:24 > 0:10:25Oh, this will do. perfect.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28Now I will be very careful, don't try this at home,
0:10:28 > 0:10:31I'm a trained professional.
0:10:31 > 0:10:35I need to get into the lime, so I'm gonna use this to get into the lime.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37I'm just gonna very, very carefully
0:10:40 > 0:10:43cut open the lime.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48Do you know what would be absolutely impossible?
0:10:48 > 0:10:52If I was to open up the lime and inside there was a ten-pound note.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57- Can you see that?- Yeah. - Ryan, reach over and take it out.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00Now that's impressive enough, but what if it was the very one
0:11:00 > 0:11:02we've been using through the whole trick,
0:11:02 > 0:11:04that Nina signed at the very beginning?
0:11:04 > 0:11:05- Wouldn't that be impossible?- Yeah.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08Open it up, have a look. Is her name on there?
0:11:10 > 0:11:12- Yep.- Amazing.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14'A sharp trick, Fergus. And they've got a lime flavoured
0:11:14 > 0:11:18'ten pound note as a souvenir, but they're not bitter.'
0:11:18 > 0:11:20I don't know how he put the ten pound note in the lime
0:11:20 > 0:11:24cos it wasn't cut. So I don't know how he did it.
0:11:24 > 0:11:28It was so cool. It was amazing. I've never seen anything like that.
0:11:28 > 0:11:32Now James is gonna set you a magical challenge in tricks of the trade.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34If you fancy yourself as a magician,
0:11:34 > 0:11:36here's a trick you can try on your mates.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40James has got a piece of paper with an arrow drawn on it, a clear
0:11:40 > 0:11:45plastic cup and some water.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48He's gonna show you how to make the arrow on the paper change
0:11:48 > 0:11:51direction without touching the paper.
0:11:51 > 0:11:55Keep watching, and you'll find out how to do it later in the show.
0:11:55 > 0:11:57It's gonna be incredible.
0:11:58 > 0:12:01Right, now, we have something amazing for you.
0:12:01 > 0:12:03Have you got your deck of cards ready?
0:12:03 > 0:12:05This is the interactive illusion.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08This is a trick where you can take part at home, so come on,
0:12:08 > 0:12:10you need to pay close attention, so get over here.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12That's it, nice and close.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15Don't breathe too heavily, you'll steam up the screen.
0:12:15 > 0:12:16You ready? Here's John.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21Go on, get your deck of cards ready now.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25Take out any nine cards from your pack.
0:12:25 > 0:12:28That's any nine cards, except the jokers.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33Have you got nine cards? And no jokers? Good.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36Put the rest of the deck away, we won't be using it.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39Now, hold the nine cards in the packet, face down like this
0:12:39 > 0:12:41and give them a little mix up.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44Now there's no way that I could know which cards you have,
0:12:44 > 0:12:46or what order they're in.
0:12:46 > 0:12:52Turn the cards towards you, and spread them out in a fan like this.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57Now, remember the third card from the back of the fan.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02For me, that would be the four of clubs.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05Now, turn the packet face down, you're going to deal
0:13:05 > 0:13:09the cards face down onto the table, one on top of the other, spelling
0:13:09 > 0:13:14the value of your card, with one card being dealt for each letter.
0:13:14 > 0:13:20I picked the four, so I'll spell like this. F-O-U-R.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23Do that now.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28OK. Take the cards in your hand, and drop them
0:13:28 > 0:13:30on top of the ones on the table.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35Now pick up the whole packet, we're going to spell another word.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38The middle word in the name of every card is "of".
0:13:38 > 0:13:41For example, the ace "of" spades.
0:13:41 > 0:13:48So we'll spell "of" now. O-F. Perfect.
0:13:48 > 0:13:53Take the cards in your hand and drop them on the cards on the table.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57Now pick up the whole packet, and I want you to spell the suit
0:13:57 > 0:14:01of your card, so that will be either clubs, hearts, spades or diamonds.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07Don't forget to include the "S".
0:14:07 > 0:14:10I'm thinking of clubs so I'll spell clubs.
0:14:10 > 0:14:17C-L-U-B-S. Do that now.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20Have you done that? Excellent.
0:14:20 > 0:14:24Now, drop the cards in your hand onto the cards onto
0:14:24 > 0:14:26the cards on the table.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29Now you have one last choice.
0:14:29 > 0:14:33You can turn the cards face up or face down.
0:14:33 > 0:14:35It's completely up to you, but decide now.
0:14:37 > 0:14:38OK, now it's time for the magic.
0:14:38 > 0:14:43Deal the cards to the table, one at a time, spelling magic.
0:14:43 > 0:14:48When you get to the "C", that card will be your card. Are you ready?
0:14:48 > 0:14:53M-A-G-I...
0:14:54 > 0:14:56..C.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59I got my card, did you get yours?
0:14:59 > 0:15:02Whoa! That is magic!
0:15:02 > 0:15:06Next up, Katherine's at a fairground getting up close and magical.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08Right, I'm about to show you something amazing
0:15:08 > 0:15:10with these two coins.
0:15:10 > 0:15:14We've got here a one-pence piece
0:15:14 > 0:15:16and a five- pence piece, yeah?
0:15:16 > 0:15:18OK, what I'd like you to do, Lucy,
0:15:18 > 0:15:20is if you could just hold your hand out for me,
0:15:20 > 0:15:24and I want you to clasp the two coins in your hand, OK?
0:15:24 > 0:15:26And put them behind your back. That's perfect.
0:15:26 > 0:15:28I want you to separate the two coins,
0:15:28 > 0:15:30so you're just going to have one coin in one hand
0:15:30 > 0:15:33and one coin in the other hand, and tell me when you've done that.
0:15:33 > 0:15:37Have you done that? OK, brilliant. Bring them both back out for me,
0:15:37 > 0:15:40and what I want you to do is choose a hand that you're going to open
0:15:40 > 0:15:42and then open that hand.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45Great, OK, so we've got the one pence here.
0:15:45 > 0:15:49- OK.- OK? And what do you have in your hand?
0:15:49 > 0:15:52- Five pence. - The five pence, exactly, but watch.
0:15:52 > 0:15:56If I rub the one pence like that, it then becomes the five pence,
0:15:56 > 0:16:00and look, open your hand, and you've now got the penny in your hand.
0:16:00 > 0:16:02- Isn't that amazing?- Yeah!
0:16:02 > 0:16:05How did she do that?!
0:16:05 > 0:16:07That's really cool.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10I had a 5p in my hand, and then she rubbed it...
0:16:10 > 0:16:12She basically just rubbed it on.
0:16:12 > 0:16:16And then she had 5p in her hand and when I opened it, I had a 1p.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20- Awesome!- Yeah, yeah, yeah, awesome. Yeah, awesome.
0:16:21 > 0:16:25Wow! Well, the quantity of the magic is exhausting,
0:16:25 > 0:16:28and the quality has blown my mind.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31In fact, it's blown my hair... all over the place.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33So I feel like I've earned a sit down,
0:16:33 > 0:16:36but before I do, let's have a look at what's coming up.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38It's all sorts of ridiculousness.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42Katherine has the key to getting Up Close And Magical.
0:16:42 > 0:16:45- It was in this hand. - That was a brilliant trick.
0:16:45 > 0:16:48James will reveal the secret in Tricks Of The Trade.
0:16:48 > 0:16:50Have you worked it out yet?
0:16:51 > 0:16:56And watch what happens when John goes undercover in another school.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58Will he fool the class?
0:16:58 > 0:17:01Or will they realise their supply teacher's still magic?
0:17:03 > 0:17:05Phew! Each week I'm bringing you
0:17:05 > 0:17:08another of my new favourite magic movers and shakers
0:17:08 > 0:17:12doing tricks in their own cribs, yards and front rooms.
0:17:12 > 0:17:15We call them the Wannabe Wizards.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17So I've got my comfy chair.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20I've got my ice pack in case the magic makes my brain hurt,
0:17:20 > 0:17:23and I've got my computer to watch it all on.
0:17:23 > 0:17:25Let's do this already!
0:17:27 > 0:17:29We asked you to send in clips of yourself
0:17:29 > 0:17:31performing your best magic tricks.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34We received loads of clips from all over the country.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37Each week I'll be choosing our favourite Wannabe Wizard
0:17:37 > 0:17:39and showing them to you guys.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42My Wannabe Wizard this time is Adam from Dunblane,
0:17:42 > 0:17:46and he's going to make headlines with this trick.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49Hi, my name's Adam, and this is my newspaper trick.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53I once saw an old man do a magic trick with a newspaper.
0:17:55 > 0:18:03And what he started to do was he started rolling...the newspaper
0:18:03 > 0:18:06so it was like that.
0:18:06 > 0:18:10And he would just...go like that.
0:18:10 > 0:18:12And then he took a glass of milk
0:18:12 > 0:18:15and started to pour the milk into the newspaper.
0:18:15 > 0:18:18Careful, Adam I hope you know what you're doing!
0:18:18 > 0:18:20We'll use a bit more than that.
0:18:25 > 0:18:27That should do.
0:18:27 > 0:18:28He's milking his big moment.
0:18:30 > 0:18:35But then he made the milk vanish, which I thought was very cool,
0:18:35 > 0:18:40but what's even better than milk vanishing is...milk chocolate.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46- An unexpectedly tasty trick.- Mm!
0:18:46 > 0:18:49And that's why Adam's my Wannabe Wizard this time.
0:18:50 > 0:18:55Now it's time for James to reveal the secret in Tricks Of The Trade.
0:18:55 > 0:18:58James will show you how to make the arrow on the piece of paper
0:18:58 > 0:19:00change direction without touching it.
0:19:00 > 0:19:04Come on, have you worked it out? How many of you got it?
0:19:04 > 0:19:08Is there special ink in the pen? Nah!
0:19:08 > 0:19:12Do you look at the paper from the other side?
0:19:12 > 0:19:14Don't be daft!
0:19:14 > 0:19:18The trick is that you place a clear cup in front of the arrow
0:19:18 > 0:19:20and fill it with water.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24When you look at the arrow through the water,
0:19:24 > 0:19:28it looks like it's pointing in the opposite direction.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31Did you get it? Are you amazing already?
0:19:31 > 0:19:34Now you've all got something to show off with in the playground.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39Next, Katherine's flexing her skills again,
0:19:39 > 0:19:41Up Close And Magical.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43Do you know what a lot of people say to me?
0:19:43 > 0:19:45They say, "Of course, Katherine,
0:19:45 > 0:19:46"you can do that magic
0:19:46 > 0:19:48"because you've got fast hands."
0:19:48 > 0:19:50So what I was planning on doing today
0:19:50 > 0:19:53is showing you the slowest trick that I know, OK?
0:19:53 > 0:19:56- So you can watch as carefully as you like, OK?- Right.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59So what I'm going to use is my house key here,
0:19:59 > 0:20:04and then I've got a ten-pence piece here, OK?
0:20:04 > 0:20:06So I'm going to put them both in my hand, like that,
0:20:06 > 0:20:10and I just want you to say either key or ten pence.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12- Key.- Key, OK.
0:20:12 > 0:20:16Great, so not the ten pence, you're not choosing the ten pence,
0:20:16 > 0:20:19so we're going to take out the ten pence like that, OK?
0:20:19 > 0:20:21Leaving us with the key in this hand.
0:20:21 > 0:20:26But watch, if I just squeeze my hands like this, really slowly,
0:20:26 > 0:20:30- did you see anything happen then? - No.- No, nothing happened?
0:20:30 > 0:20:32- Nothing at all. - But look, something did happen,
0:20:32 > 0:20:36cos now the key is in this hand and the ten pence is in this hand.
0:20:36 > 0:20:39It's very strange. I'm going to show you that again.
0:20:39 > 0:20:40Do that again, yes.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43- This time I'm going to make it even fairer for you.- Right!
0:20:43 > 0:20:45OK, I'm going to keep my hand open.
0:20:45 > 0:20:50So I take out the ten-pence piece, OK,
0:20:50 > 0:20:54- so leaving us with what in this hand?- Key.- Key.
0:20:54 > 0:20:55The key? No.
0:20:55 > 0:20:59The ten pence is in this hand, and the key is in this hand.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02- Did you see that happen? - Did not see that happen.
0:21:02 > 0:21:05It's very, very confusing. Hold out your hand for me?
0:21:05 > 0:21:09There you go, you can check those out as well, have a look at them.
0:21:09 > 0:21:11An amazing trick, Katherine!
0:21:11 > 0:21:13Kieron and Connor can't unlock your secret.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17She had a key and a ten pence,
0:21:17 > 0:21:21and the key swapped from one hand, which the ten pence was in,
0:21:21 > 0:21:23into the other.
0:21:23 > 0:21:25That was a brilliant trick.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30Did you see that? You needed two pairs of eyes to see that.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32Unfortunately, I do.
0:21:32 > 0:21:35I've got these ones here and, er...these two here.
0:21:35 > 0:21:38I knew I'd make a name for myself one day.
0:21:38 > 0:21:42OK, it's time for more school magic, and you've guessed it,
0:21:42 > 0:21:45John's about to become a supply teacher to fool another class.
0:21:46 > 0:21:51The disguise is ready, John's watch is synchronised.
0:21:52 > 0:21:55Enter year four. They don't know it yet,
0:21:55 > 0:21:58but John's about to do a lesson involving statistics.
0:21:58 > 0:22:01The odds are there'll be magic involved, too.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03None of them have noticed the hidden cameras
0:22:03 > 0:22:06or recognised John with his goatee beard on,
0:22:06 > 0:22:10but will the class be scratching their chins when the magic begins?
0:22:10 > 0:22:12I'm going to be teaching you a maths lesson today,
0:22:12 > 0:22:16and we're going to be teaching a lesson on statistics.
0:22:16 > 0:22:17And you can use statistics
0:22:17 > 0:22:21to calculate how often a coincidence will happen.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23A good example of a coincidence
0:22:23 > 0:22:26would be if you decided to go out and buy a present for him
0:22:26 > 0:22:29and you decided to go out and buy a present for him,
0:22:29 > 0:22:32and you both went out shopping on different days, separately,
0:22:32 > 0:22:35and when you gave each other the presents and you opened them,
0:22:35 > 0:22:38you'd both bought each other exactly the same present.
0:22:38 > 0:22:42All present and correct so far nobody suspects a thing.
0:22:42 > 0:22:44I need somebody to help me.
0:22:44 > 0:22:47Let me see, yeah, this boy here, I think you'd be good.
0:22:47 > 0:22:49- Come on out here, what's your name? - Zayn.
0:22:49 > 0:22:53Zayn? Excellent, Zayn, come over here with me, that's wonderful.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57Now, Zayn, we're going to try an experiment using some alphabet cards.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00We've got the letters of the alphabet on these cards,
0:23:00 > 0:23:04all 26 letters of the alphabet, OK? And what we're going to do
0:23:04 > 0:23:08is we're going to use one set of alphabet cards for you,
0:23:08 > 0:23:10and I've got another set of cards exactly the same.
0:23:10 > 0:23:11Alphabet cards as well.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14John and Zayn have the same set of alphabet cards.
0:23:14 > 0:23:18Keep watching John's going to do something that defies logic.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21Now, Zayn, what I'd like you to do is hold your cards face down,
0:23:21 > 0:23:22and we're going to mix them up
0:23:22 > 0:23:24and see if we can make a coincidence happen.
0:23:24 > 0:23:28So, Zayn, if you just mix your cards up a little bit, that's it.
0:23:28 > 0:23:30Zayn's mixing the cards up good and proper.
0:23:30 > 0:23:32That's it, mix them up, some at the bottom, some at the top.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34And then when you've mixed them up, Zayn,
0:23:34 > 0:23:38what I'd like you to do is, I'd like you to place your top card on there,
0:23:38 > 0:23:40and I'll place my top card on there.
0:23:40 > 0:23:42Now, what are the chances of us both having the same letter?
0:23:42 > 0:23:46- Does anybody know? Yes? - One out of 26.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49One out of 26, that's right. Let's see, which one did I give you?
0:23:51 > 0:23:53You got the G.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55And I gave you the G as well, we've both got the letter G.
0:23:55 > 0:23:58Now, that's a 1-in-26 chance.
0:23:58 > 0:24:00Now, obviously the odds get simpler,
0:24:00 > 0:24:02it gets much easier the less cards we have.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04So now one card's missing,
0:24:04 > 0:24:07- so the chances of getting it right now are one in...?- 25.
0:24:07 > 0:24:1125, so it gets a little bit easier each time we do this, Zayn.
0:24:11 > 0:24:14That's it, give them a good mix, and when you're happy, Zayn,
0:24:14 > 0:24:16we're going to do exactly the same thing.
0:24:16 > 0:24:18You place your card on there, I place my card on there.
0:24:18 > 0:24:21The chances of getting the same letter, one in 25,
0:24:21 > 0:24:23but if we have a look, you chose the letter A,
0:24:23 > 0:24:26and I gave you the letter A,
0:24:26 > 0:24:29so that's twice we've managed to match them.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31Now, this is statistics that is making this happen,
0:24:31 > 0:24:33I'm going to explain how it works.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35But we've now got 24 cards left,
0:24:35 > 0:24:38so it's much easier, so give them a good mix.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41Wonderful. Are you happy they're all mixed up?
0:24:41 > 0:24:43Zayn is still randomly shuffling.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45John can't pick out the same card again, can he?
0:24:45 > 0:24:48Put your card there, I put my card there.
0:24:48 > 0:24:50If it's worked, this is a 1-in-24 chance,
0:24:50 > 0:24:52and I have got the letter C,
0:24:52 > 0:24:55and you've got the letter C as well.
0:24:55 > 0:24:58It gets easier each time we do it.
0:24:58 > 0:25:00Three in a row a statistic hat-trick.
0:25:00 > 0:25:03Can John conjure a fourth coincidence?
0:25:03 > 0:25:04Give them a little mix,
0:25:04 > 0:25:08and then I'll give you my top card, you give me your top card.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11There's three cards missing, so what are the odds?
0:25:11 > 0:25:13The pupils have worked out the odds,
0:25:13 > 0:25:16but they haven't worked out something odd is happening.
0:25:16 > 0:25:18Let's have a look and see which letters we got.
0:25:18 > 0:25:21Oh, we got an I this time, we're going to do it one last time.
0:25:21 > 0:25:24Give them a little mix-up, Zayn, that's it.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27And then you give me the top card.
0:25:27 > 0:25:29And what are the chances now? One in...?
0:25:29 > 0:25:33- 22.- One in 22, let's see how we did, Zayn.
0:25:33 > 0:25:36Look, he got the letter M, and I got the letter M.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38Wonderful, thank you very much.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41Zayn, I'll take those back, you can go and take a seat.
0:25:41 > 0:25:42Now, the chances of me knowing
0:25:42 > 0:25:45that I would have these letters selected by both of us
0:25:45 > 0:25:47gets quite complicated.
0:25:47 > 0:25:52The chances of it happening is 1 in 26 times 25 times 24
0:25:52 > 0:25:53times 23 times 22,
0:25:53 > 0:25:58which is over 1 in 7.5 million.
0:25:58 > 0:26:02So if I could manage to work out that the letter G would be chosen
0:26:02 > 0:26:04and then the letter A would be chosen,
0:26:04 > 0:26:06and then the letter C would be chosen, like this,
0:26:06 > 0:26:09and then the letter I would be chosen and then the letter M,
0:26:09 > 0:26:13that would be a 7.5 million-to-1 chance.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16How did he do it? John's going to spell it out.
0:26:16 > 0:26:20Of course it could be done by another method, which is this...
0:26:25 > 0:26:27Magic.
0:26:27 > 0:26:29Because I'm not really a teacher.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32You've been set up by your parents and your teachers.
0:26:32 > 0:26:34I'm actually a magician, and there's a camera here,
0:26:34 > 0:26:37there's a camera at the back, a camera here,
0:26:37 > 0:26:43and you've all been on CBBC's Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46John's magic was amazing, and that was no coincidence,
0:26:46 > 0:26:49but how did it all add up for the class?
0:26:49 > 0:26:54Absolutely...amazed because I didn't think that that could really happen.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58I just thought they were going to get different cards each time.
0:26:58 > 0:26:59The letter G would be chosen...
0:26:59 > 0:27:03The statistic trick went from odd to even better
0:27:03 > 0:27:05when the letters spelled "magic".
0:27:05 > 0:27:10I thought we were going to just do maths, so I was pretty surprised.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14Yeah, and there's a really big difference between magic and maths.
0:27:14 > 0:27:16A really big difference.
0:27:17 > 0:27:21An amazing trick, and this class didn't realise...
0:27:28 > 0:27:31I like to play that coincidence game on my own.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33Watch this, it works every time.
0:27:35 > 0:27:38Oh, it usually works.
0:27:38 > 0:27:41See you later! But until then, if you're at school
0:27:41 > 0:27:43and you think something magical's occurring,
0:27:43 > 0:27:45maybe you'll find yourself shouting
0:27:45 > 0:27:49Help! My supply teacher is still magic!
0:28:02 > 0:28:06Subtitles by Red Bee Media Ltd
