0:00:20 > 0:00:24'Tackling amazing challenges on land, sea, and in the air.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27'It's time to find out if a group of kids can handle
0:00:27 > 0:00:31'the pressure of being emergency lifesavers.'
0:00:31 > 0:00:35I'm Rav Wilding and this is Hero Squad.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Six ordinary school kids.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44Their mission - to learn how to save lives.
0:00:47 > 0:00:51But do they have what it takes to become real-life heroes?
0:00:59 > 0:01:00Meet our rookie cadets,
0:01:00 > 0:01:04handpicked by CBBC from all over the UK.
0:01:10 > 0:01:1212-year-old Alex from Staffordshire.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16I'm really excited about Hero Squad.
0:01:16 > 0:01:21I think it's going to be epic, life-changing and so, so fun.
0:01:21 > 0:01:2413-year-old Kiera from Essex.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27My dad's a fireman and my mum's a paramedic
0:01:27 > 0:01:30so I've heard all their stories, so I just want to do it now.
0:01:30 > 0:01:3413-year-old Lewis from Edinburgh.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36When I first found out I was on Hero Squad,
0:01:36 > 0:01:40I just ran around the kitchen going, "Wah!"
0:01:40 > 0:01:42I can't believe I'm on it!
0:01:42 > 0:01:4612-year-old Luci from County Armagh.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49I want to be a hero because I love helping people.
0:01:49 > 0:01:5212-year-old Andy from Stoke.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55I'd make a good hero because I'd make people laugh.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58And finally, 12-year-old Katy from Derbyshire.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02Well, even if anything looks a bit too tough,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04I'll keep going and I won't stop until I've overcome it.
0:02:04 > 0:02:09Six ordinary kids, but the time for ordinary is over.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18These cadets will face ten challenges as they work with
0:02:18 > 0:02:22the brave people who make up our emergency services.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25They'll train with firefighters in Salford,
0:02:25 > 0:02:28go underground with cave rescue experts,
0:02:28 > 0:02:32and even work with four-legged lifesavers in Devon.
0:02:32 > 0:02:33Find!
0:02:33 > 0:02:36But every year in the UK,
0:02:36 > 0:02:40thousands of rescues take place not on land, but at sea.
0:02:40 > 0:02:46So the training starts here at the RNLI headquarters in Poole.
0:02:47 > 0:02:49Good morning, cadets!
0:02:49 > 0:02:51The cadets have come together for the first time
0:02:51 > 0:02:54and have no idea what to expect.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59Now, over next few weeks, you'll be doing things
0:02:59 > 0:03:02that no youngsters of your age have ever done before.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04It's OK at times if you're scared,
0:03:04 > 0:03:09but it's not OK if you don't give 100% and help each other.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11So who's excited and ready to go?
0:03:11 > 0:03:12ALL: Me!
0:03:12 > 0:03:15That's it! So what are you waiting for then?
0:03:15 > 0:03:17Let's get the uniforms on and get out!
0:03:21 > 0:03:24Each cadet gets their own Hero Squad uniform.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32Pressed, dressed and ready for action.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35Time for the Hero Squad's first mission -
0:03:35 > 0:03:40sea rescue, with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46Since it was set up in 1824,
0:03:46 > 0:03:51the RNLI have saved nearly 140,000 lives,
0:03:51 > 0:03:54and their courageous volunteer crews are on call 24/7.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00Every day, RNLI lifeboat crews go out in all weathers,
0:04:00 > 0:04:03rescuing people in danger around the UK coastline.
0:04:06 > 0:04:10In just two days, these six cadets must transform themselves
0:04:10 > 0:04:13into an all-weather lifeboat crew,
0:04:13 > 0:04:15for an extraordinary Hero Squad challenge.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19A man's fallen overboard, and is stranded at sea.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22The Hero Squad must get him to safety
0:04:22 > 0:04:24before he gets dangerously cold.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29But before that, they've got a lot to learn
0:04:29 > 0:04:32and here's the man who's going to teach them.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39- Good morning, cadets. - ALL: Good morning.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42My name is Glen Mallen and I'm going to be your mentor.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46Mentor Glen has spent 20 years with the RNLI.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50He trains volunteers to deal with the toughest sea rescues
0:04:50 > 0:04:53any time of the day or night.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57We're going to issue you your own pager,
0:04:57 > 0:05:00and if it makes a noise or vibrates or goes off,
0:05:00 > 0:05:03I want you to report to the kit room as soon as possible.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05Let's go and get kitted up.
0:05:08 > 0:05:12Just like a real RNLI all-weather lifeboat crew,
0:05:12 > 0:05:16the cadets are wearing boots, trousers, jackets and life-jackets.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19They'll need the protection,
0:05:19 > 0:05:22because Glen's sending them straight in at the deep end
0:05:22 > 0:05:27of one of the UK's biggest sea survival pools,
0:05:27 > 0:05:30where lifeboat crews train to stay on peak lifesaving form.
0:05:31 > 0:05:32Eyes up.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35Olly? Ready to jump?
0:05:35 > 0:05:38Before the cadets are let loose on the lifeboats,
0:05:38 > 0:05:40Glen has to make sure they can survive
0:05:40 > 0:05:42the same dreadful sea conditions
0:05:42 > 0:05:44as the people they're trying to rescue.
0:05:44 > 0:05:48First task, how do you get off a sinking boat safely?
0:05:48 > 0:05:50- Jump!- Like this.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55It's a four-metre-high jump.
0:05:55 > 0:06:00Glen's never allowed any 12 or 13-year-olds to do this before.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08Mentor Glen will be choosing one cadet to lead the others
0:06:08 > 0:06:10in a Hero Squad rescue tomorrow.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13They each need to impress him.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16If they're scared, they can pull out at any time.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20I'm a bit nervous. But it looks good.
0:06:20 > 0:06:21I'm going to enjoy it.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24I'm looking forward to it, but I'm a bit nervous as well.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26I'm really excited!
0:06:26 > 0:06:29- It's that time. Are you ready for jumps?- ALL:- Yeah!
0:06:29 > 0:06:31Good. So who's up first?
0:06:31 > 0:06:33Kiera volunteers.
0:06:33 > 0:06:37Out of all the cadets, she's the strongest swimmer.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39Three, two, one, jump!
0:06:39 > 0:06:40Excellent!
0:06:42 > 0:06:45A great landing. Next, it's keen Scout Alex.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49Then football fanatic Katy.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52Hang on, I think she's dropped something!
0:06:52 > 0:06:55Andy, Luci and Lewis are still to go.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57Come on, Lewis! Straight in. Well done!
0:07:00 > 0:07:02Next, it's Luci's turn.
0:07:02 > 0:07:03Step forward.
0:07:07 > 0:07:09Last, it's computer game-loving Andy,
0:07:09 > 0:07:12and his nerves are showing. Glen thinks he could do
0:07:12 > 0:07:15with some encouragement from the rest of the Hero Squad.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18- Give him some support then, guys! - CADETS CHEER
0:07:18 > 0:07:22Come on, Andy! Here we go.
0:07:22 > 0:07:26And he reassures him it's not too late to back out.
0:07:26 > 0:07:30In three, two, one...jump.
0:07:37 > 0:07:38He's done it,
0:07:38 > 0:07:42joining the other five cadets in the survival pool.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47A fantastic effort from those six cadets. Unbelievable.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49First time we've had children into that pool.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52Every one of them jumped.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58Lifeboat crews are all about teamwork.
0:07:58 > 0:08:00The Hero Squad cadets have only been
0:08:00 > 0:08:03in each other's company for a couple of hours,
0:08:03 > 0:08:05but they're going to have to work together
0:08:05 > 0:08:09to survive Glen's next section of training.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11Waves on.
0:08:11 > 0:08:16First, he's going to re-create some seriously choppy sea conditions.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19We're ready for the waves!
0:08:22 > 0:08:27The waves in the survival pool can swell up to a metre-and-a-half high,
0:08:27 > 0:08:31and our cadets must swim 25 metres through the waves
0:08:31 > 0:08:33to the other end of the pool.
0:08:33 > 0:08:35But 12-year-old Katy is more at home
0:08:35 > 0:08:37on a football pitch than in the water.
0:08:37 > 0:08:42I panic a tiny bit when I'm, like, underwater.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45I wouldn't say I'm the strongest ever swimmer, but I can swim enough
0:08:45 > 0:08:47to, er, stay alive.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50Let's see if Katy can put her fears to one side.
0:08:51 > 0:08:55OK, guys? Off you go!
0:08:58 > 0:09:02'Confident swimmer and junior triathlete Kiera's way ahead,
0:09:02 > 0:09:05'but Katy's struggling.'
0:09:05 > 0:09:08- Katy looks a bit nervous. - She's definitely looking around.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10- A little bit nervous.- Absolutely.
0:09:10 > 0:09:15'No matter how hard she tries, Katy's getting nowhere.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18'She's so far behind, she can't even see the other cadets.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22She needs support from the rest of her team.'
0:09:22 > 0:09:24They're all helping her out now, that's nice.
0:09:25 > 0:09:29'Remember, Glen wants to see teamwork,
0:09:29 > 0:09:32'the cadets helping each other. In a real survival situation,
0:09:32 > 0:09:35'a person's life could depend on it.'
0:09:36 > 0:09:38Come on, Katy!
0:09:38 > 0:09:40'She looks exhausted. But crucially,
0:09:40 > 0:09:43'Katy's not giving up and she's battling on.'
0:09:43 > 0:09:46Alex is reaching out as far as he can to get her in.
0:09:46 > 0:09:49Look at him. And he's got her!
0:09:49 > 0:09:51Well done!
0:09:51 > 0:09:54- What a team effort. - Well done, cadets! Brilliant effort!
0:09:54 > 0:09:58'A few hours ago, the cadets were complete strangers.
0:09:58 > 0:10:02'Now they're helping each other through tough sea survival training.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05'But it's not over yet.
0:10:06 > 0:10:11'The cadets need to learn how to use one of these, a life raft.
0:10:12 > 0:10:17'Every lifeboat carries one, in case the crew have to abandon ship
0:10:17 > 0:10:21'and keep themselves and any rescued passengers safe.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26'But getting in is just the easy bit!'
0:10:26 > 0:10:29All right? OK?
0:10:29 > 0:10:32Nice deep breaths.
0:10:32 > 0:10:33'In you go, Lewis!'
0:10:33 > 0:10:36Are you all right?
0:10:36 > 0:10:39'Not the most graceful entrance, Luci!'
0:10:39 > 0:10:41- A face plant!- That was a face plant!
0:10:41 > 0:10:43Come on, Andy!
0:10:43 > 0:10:47'Andy's last, helped in by the other cadets!
0:10:50 > 0:10:53'Just like a real-life situation,
0:10:53 > 0:10:56'the cadets must now wait in the life raft to be rescued.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00'They have no idea how long that could take.
0:11:00 > 0:11:06'And mentor Glen has created the worst possible sea conditions -
0:11:06 > 0:11:10'rain, wind and darkness.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16'All the helpless cadets can do now is wait.
0:11:16 > 0:11:18'Inside the cramped life raft,
0:11:18 > 0:11:22'they're singing to keep their minds off the conditions.'
0:11:22 > 0:11:25# ..Round and round Round and round
0:11:25 > 0:11:27# Round and round... #
0:11:27 > 0:11:31'12-year-old Luci's doing her best to keep everyone's spirits up.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37'Back home in County Armagh, Luci goes swimming every week,
0:11:37 > 0:11:39'and she's not scared of deep water.'
0:11:39 > 0:11:41I love swimming,
0:11:41 > 0:11:45because when you're in the pool, it makes you feel very energetic.
0:11:45 > 0:11:49'But she did once have a bad experience at sea.'
0:11:49 > 0:11:52We were out in the boat one day
0:11:52 > 0:11:56with my dad, and then the weather all of a sudden changed.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59It was quite scary with the waves really high,
0:11:59 > 0:12:01and it was raining as well.
0:12:02 > 0:12:06Well, if Luci's scared now, she's certainly not showing it.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11THUNDER ROLLS
0:12:11 > 0:12:13But Lewis looks terrified,
0:12:13 > 0:12:15and Katy and Kiera seem to be struggling
0:12:15 > 0:12:17with the motion of the ocean.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22They've just got to hang on and wait to be rescued.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33- Let's get them out.- Let's do it.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37In a real-life rescue, a helicopter might be the only way
0:12:37 > 0:12:41to get stranded survivors out quickly and safely.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43So Glen and his team are recreating
0:12:43 > 0:12:45an air-sea rescue for the cadets,
0:12:45 > 0:12:48right here in the survival pool.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54It's down to the winchman to carry them to safety.
0:12:58 > 0:13:00The cadets are winched out one by one
0:13:00 > 0:13:04until there are just two cadets left in the life raft,
0:13:04 > 0:13:07where conditions are increasingly unpleasant.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11Luci can see Alex has had enough.
0:13:15 > 0:13:17So she offers to let him go first.
0:13:21 > 0:13:26Luci leaves the raft, only after making sure everyone else is safe.
0:13:28 > 0:13:32I was going to go fifth but then someone else wanted to go before me
0:13:32 > 0:13:35so I let everyone else go and then I got off.
0:13:38 > 0:13:43Even fully qualified lifeboat crews can struggle with this training,
0:13:43 > 0:13:48and our cadets have spent a whole 40 minutes on board the life raft!
0:13:48 > 0:13:52Some found the task tougher than others.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54Horrible.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57I felt sick in the boat. It was horrible.
0:13:57 > 0:13:59I was a bit scared when the water was going over my head,
0:13:59 > 0:14:02but I'm quite pleased I've done it now.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04Glen's impressed.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07The team spirit and the crew that you created between you
0:14:07 > 0:14:09was really top notch.
0:14:09 > 0:14:11You should be very proud of yourselves.
0:14:17 > 0:14:21In less than 24 hours, the cadets will have to crew up their own
0:14:21 > 0:14:24all-weather lifeboat in a rescue miles out at sea.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30There's a Hero Squad emergency when a sailor falls overboard.
0:14:30 > 0:14:34The dangerous sea currents mean he's in serious trouble.
0:14:34 > 0:14:38To find him, the cadets are going to need to prove they've got all
0:14:38 > 0:14:40the necessary Hero Squad skills.
0:14:40 > 0:14:46But first, time to get on board their very own all-weather lifeboat.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48- Shall we go?- Yeah.- Let's go.
0:14:48 > 0:14:53Costing over £2 million and weighing more than 40 tonnes,
0:14:53 > 0:14:57this is the biggest lifeboat in the RNLI fleet.
0:14:57 > 0:15:01It takes a highly-trained crew who know what they're doing
0:15:01 > 0:15:03to handle an impressive boat like this.
0:15:03 > 0:15:07So the cadets need to crack on with their rescue training.
0:15:07 > 0:15:11Because so many RNLI rescues involve people adrift at sea
0:15:11 > 0:15:12it's essential for the cadets to know
0:15:12 > 0:15:17how to get a casualty safely onto the lifeboat using the hoist.
0:15:17 > 0:15:20After getting him attached
0:15:20 > 0:15:22and working together like a tug of war team...
0:15:22 > 0:15:26- Heave!- All pulling together!- Heave!
0:15:26 > 0:15:28..they give a few good heaves
0:15:28 > 0:15:32and he's out of the water and safely on board.
0:15:37 > 0:15:39It's the end of training.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41The cadets went straight in the deep end.
0:15:44 > 0:15:49They overcame fears, pulled together as a team...
0:15:50 > 0:15:52THEY CHEER
0:15:52 > 0:15:56..and helped each other through some stomach-churning sea conditions.
0:15:56 > 0:15:58You've stopped singing, have you?
0:15:58 > 0:16:04Tomorrow, the cadets will face their very first Hero Squad rescue.
0:16:04 > 0:16:06For every challenge they face, one of them will be
0:16:06 > 0:16:09chosen to be the squad leader by their mentor.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13For their first rescue,
0:16:13 > 0:16:17they'll need a strong character who will keep the others on track.
0:16:23 > 0:16:25Glen has a tough decision to make.
0:16:25 > 0:16:29All of the cadets have put in excellent performances.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33But there can only be one squad leader,
0:16:33 > 0:16:36and one cadet in particular stood out today.
0:16:36 > 0:16:40From inside the life raft we heard that one person in particular
0:16:40 > 0:16:43kept that team going, and when everyone else was starting to flag
0:16:43 > 0:16:46slightly, continued singing right to the end.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49So the squad leader is Luci.
0:16:54 > 0:16:58I'm really excited about being squad leader. It's a big responsibility.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08The next morning the cadets are on call.
0:17:08 > 0:17:12Glen's left them to their own devices.
0:17:15 > 0:17:19They don't know it yet, but two miles from shore

0:17:32 > 0:17:36Whilst the water might look calm, there's a strong undertow
0:17:36 > 0:17:40that quickly separates the Hero Squad casualty from his boat.
0:17:40 > 0:17:44With no engine, his friend is powerless to help.
0:17:44 > 0:17:46He puts in an emergency call to the coastguard,
0:17:46 > 0:17:50- who contact the lifeboat crew. - Hi, coastguard, please.
0:17:50 > 0:17:52PAGERS BLEEP
0:17:52 > 0:17:57This is it, guys. Time for your first rescue. Move!
0:17:59 > 0:18:03Every time on Hero Squad, the cadets will face a nerve-wracking
0:18:03 > 0:18:06challenge based on real-life emergencies.
0:18:06 > 0:18:09They'll be racing against the clock to save their casualty,
0:18:09 > 0:18:12and it's the cadets alone who will be calling the shots.
0:18:12 > 0:18:17It really is all down to these 12 and 13-year-olds.
0:18:17 > 0:18:20Two days ago they were in school,
0:18:20 > 0:18:23now they're rushing to the aid of a Hero Squad casualty.
0:18:23 > 0:18:27Luci's first job as Hero Squad leader is to organise her team.
0:18:27 > 0:18:31Who is the communications? Do you want to go in first?
0:18:31 > 0:18:34So that's Alex on the radio.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37'Hero Squad lifeboat, this is training coastguard...'
0:18:37 > 0:18:39Katy and Andy are on navigation...

0:19:06 > 0:19:10'so please treat as an immediate distress. Over.'

0:19:13 > 0:19:17It's a yacht - Splash Happy - in distress.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19There's a man overboard.
0:19:19 > 0:19:23Every second counts now. The sea is just ten degrees
0:19:23 > 0:19:27and even with protective gear on, that's dangerously cold.
0:19:27 > 0:19:31The engine has failed and there's no radio communication.
0:19:31 > 0:19:34The most important thing is there's a man overboard.
0:19:36 > 0:19:40The cadets still need to work out where they're going.
0:19:40 > 0:19:43So while Kiera keeps her eyes peeled,
0:19:43 > 0:19:47Katy tries to make sense of a large navigation chart.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50'..Approximately five-zero degrees...'
0:19:50 > 0:19:53Using the chart and co-ordinates given to them by the coastguard,
0:19:53 > 0:19:55she's doing the job of an onboard sat-nav.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00Katy plots the course they need to take to the yacht.
0:20:00 > 0:20:02She's found it.
0:20:02 > 0:20:03And thanks to her,
0:20:03 > 0:20:07they can head straight to our Hero Squad casualty...and fast.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10'All stations, picking up speed now.'

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Can they remember their training
0:20:18 > 0:20:21and all work together to successfully complete this rescue?
0:20:21 > 0:20:25With a full emergency crew on board the lifeboat,
0:20:25 > 0:20:29I'm watching all the action from a distance.
0:20:31 > 0:20:33Can I please have everyone up on deck for lookout?
0:20:35 > 0:20:39The cadets are on lookout for the stricken yacht, Splash Happy.
0:20:43 > 0:20:45Yacht, straight ahead.
0:20:45 > 0:20:47I think Kiera's seen it, straight in front.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50We think it's over there.
0:20:50 > 0:20:54Kiera's right! She's spotted the casualty afloat in the sea.
0:20:56 > 0:20:58I can see someone waving from the yacht.
0:20:58 > 0:21:03The Hero Squad casualty has been in the cold sea for almost an hour
0:21:03 > 0:21:05so Luci needs to get the cadets organised
0:21:05 > 0:21:09and get him out quickly, but she's wasting valuable time.
0:21:12 > 0:21:18Which one...? You two could be at the front.
0:21:18 > 0:21:22Kiera's going to be shouting, "heave", cos she did that yesterday.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24OK, guys. Time's running out.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27- OK, right. You go in order. - Well done, Luci.
0:21:27 > 0:21:29Good call, Luci.
0:21:29 > 0:21:33She remembered the hoist from their training
0:21:33 > 0:21:37and told the others to start using it.

0:21:43 > 0:21:48- Is someone keeping an eye on the casualty?- Yeah.- Not long now!
0:21:48 > 0:21:52It's very important to keep the casualty in sight at all times,
0:21:52 > 0:21:55as while he's still in the water, he's still in danger.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58It's all right, sir, we're going to get you.
0:21:58 > 0:22:02At one metre 70, Kiera's the tallest cadet,
0:22:02 > 0:22:05so her job is to reach down and secure the casualty
0:22:05 > 0:22:08while the others work together to pull on the ropes.
0:22:11 > 0:22:13Are they going to have the strength to winch him up?
0:22:13 > 0:22:15They can only do it if they work together.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17Heave! Heave!
0:22:17 > 0:22:19The hoist works on a pulley system.
0:22:19 > 0:22:23As they learnt yesterday, it's physically tough,
0:22:23 > 0:22:27and they need to work as a team to pull the casualty to safety.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29They're all pulling together!
0:22:29 > 0:22:31ALL: Heave! Heave! Heave!
0:22:31 > 0:22:34LUCI: Drop it down slightly.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53But it's not over yet.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57Have you got anybody else on the boat with you?
0:22:57 > 0:22:59Quick thinking Katy's realised there's still someone
0:22:59 > 0:23:02stuck on the yacht with no engine.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05The Hero Squad will need to tow the yacht back to safety.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07We're getting somebody to throw a rope over.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10We'll be with you in a minute.
0:23:10 > 0:23:12Katy's straight onto it -
0:23:12 > 0:23:16getting the rope ready, so they can throw a line to the yacht.
0:23:16 > 0:23:20She hands the line to keen sailor Lewis.
0:23:20 > 0:23:22Can he hit the mark with his rope throw?
0:23:22 > 0:23:25The pressure's really on for Lewis now.
0:23:25 > 0:23:27Can he throw the rope and get it to the yachtsman?
0:23:27 > 0:23:29Right, are you OK?
0:23:31 > 0:23:34Try and throw it. Go!
0:23:34 > 0:23:35Oh!
0:23:35 > 0:23:37Oh! He's just missed.
0:23:37 > 0:23:41It's a miss with his first effort. But he's not giving up.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03he can be towed by the lifeboat back to safety.
0:24:03 > 0:24:07Will you please drive forward slowly?
0:24:07 > 0:24:08Yeah, OK, that's cool.
0:24:08 > 0:24:12Squad leader Luci is still firmly in charge.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15- Did you get it? - Watch the rope, guys.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18I think Luci was a brilliant squad leader.
0:24:18 > 0:24:21She told us all what to do and she took control of the situation.
0:24:21 > 0:24:24Try and steer a little bit.
0:24:24 > 0:24:28Try and make sure you don't tip over.
0:24:28 > 0:24:29This rescue was really cool.
0:24:29 > 0:24:33Me and Kiera were up there looking out
0:24:33 > 0:24:34and it was kind of like a mission!
0:24:34 > 0:24:37Are you ready?
0:24:37 > 0:24:41All they have to do now is make the tow back as smooth as possible.
0:24:41 > 0:24:45But once again, Katy has spotted an issue
0:24:45 > 0:24:47Let the rope out looser, please.
0:24:47 > 0:24:49There's not enough tension on it.
0:24:49 > 0:24:50So how do we get tension on it?
0:24:50 > 0:24:53Go and tell them to go faster.
0:24:53 > 0:24:55Will you please drive a bit faster?
0:24:55 > 0:24:56Thank you!
0:24:59 > 0:25:02It's a great feeling to have completed my first challenge
0:25:02 > 0:25:05cos it went really well and it's just given us
0:25:05 > 0:25:08lots of confidence to know we can work well as a team.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19'Training coastguard, this is training coastguard,

0:25:38 > 0:25:43They've transformed themselves from cadets into RNLI lifesavers.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45Now all that's left to do is choose a Hero Of The Day,
0:25:45 > 0:25:48the cadet their mentor believes has demonstrated
0:25:48 > 0:25:53that extra bit of bravery, determination and skill.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55The Hero Of The Day will get a special treat,
0:25:55 > 0:25:58while the other cadets are given a chore.
0:25:58 > 0:26:04After doing so well with their first mission, this is a tough decision.
0:26:04 > 0:26:09Luci, as the squad leader, I think you really allowed your team
0:26:09 > 0:26:10to develop underneath you.
0:26:12 > 0:26:13Katy, what we saw from you today,
0:26:13 > 0:26:17you picked up the navigation side of it

0:26:23 > 0:26:26to win the title Hero Of The Day?
0:26:27 > 0:26:33The person we've decided that is going to be Hero Of The Day is...
0:26:38 > 0:26:40..Katy.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45- Well done.- Well done.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48I was just so excited,

0:26:50 > 0:26:52I'm so ecstatic.
0:26:52 > 0:26:55In training, Katy struggled the most
0:26:55 > 0:26:59during her survival swim, but she battled on.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03And when it came to the rescue,
0:27:03 > 0:27:08her navigation skills kept the Hero Squad lifeboat right on course.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11I think the Hero Of The Day decision was pretty well picked
0:27:11 > 0:27:13cos Katy did try her hardest.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16I think Katy deserved to get Hero Of The Day
0:27:16 > 0:27:18cos she was very good on the boat.
0:27:18 > 0:27:22Having just had one day of training, they were outstanding.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48who's trapped somewhere
0:27:48 > 0:27:50in a three-mile-long network of caves?
