0:00:03 > 0:00:05SIREN WAILS
0:00:05 > 0:00:07Coming up
0:00:07 > 0:00:08on Hero Squad...
0:00:09 > 0:00:12Six wannabe heroes...
0:00:16 > 0:00:19..facing the worst nature can throw at them.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24There's a new emergency crew in town.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30I'm Rav Wilding and this is Hero Squad!
0:00:33 > 0:00:35Six ordinary school kids.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41Their mission - to learn how to save lives.
0:00:44 > 0:00:48But do they have what it takes to become real-life heroes?
0:00:52 > 0:00:54Today, on Hero Squad,
0:00:54 > 0:00:57can these 12- and 13-year-old cadets
0:00:57 > 0:01:01be transformed into life-saving fire-fighters?
0:01:01 > 0:01:04They have just 24 hours to learn everything they need
0:01:04 > 0:01:07to take on an extraordinary Hero Squad rescue.
0:01:07 > 0:01:09Help!
0:01:09 > 0:01:12A young woman is trapped inside a burning building.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16The fire is spreading quickly, and her bedroom is filling with smoke.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19But will the cadets get to her before it's too late?
0:01:24 > 0:01:27Fire - it's hot, it's unpredictable and it kills.
0:01:27 > 0:01:31Today, the cadets join the ranks of the brave men and women
0:01:31 > 0:01:34who fight this lethal force of nature every day.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36But will they have what it takes to succeed
0:01:36 > 0:01:38or will they combust under pressure?
0:01:41 > 0:01:42It's day one,
0:01:42 > 0:01:46and the cadets are in Weymouth for the start of their training.
0:01:46 > 0:01:48Welcome to Weymouth Fire Station,
0:01:48 > 0:01:50part of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53- Are you ready to meet your mentor, cadets?- Yeah.
0:01:53 > 0:01:54Let's bring her in.
0:01:59 > 0:02:03Good morning, cadets. My name is Esther Nash and I am your mentor.
0:02:03 > 0:02:07Esther has been fighting fires for almost seven years
0:02:07 > 0:02:11and it's her job to teach the cadets all she knows about saving lives.
0:02:13 > 0:02:16'First up, she wants to see how the cadets react
0:02:16 > 0:02:19'when they come face to face with a real fire.'
0:02:22 > 0:02:25This demonstration shows how quickly
0:02:25 > 0:02:28a fire caused by just one cigarette can spread.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32In a matter of minutes, or even seconds,
0:02:32 > 0:02:34that sofa is now alight.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37We felt the heat and we weren't even in the room.
0:02:39 > 0:02:43Esther's demo also shows how opening a door lets more oxygen in the room
0:02:43 > 0:02:47and can increase the size of the fire in seconds.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52- Wow, look at this.- Whoa! - Feel that heat!- That is so hot.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55That's the reason why we tell you never to go back into a room.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59What's most important is you and your life.
0:02:59 > 0:03:04These sofas, toys, pictures can be replaced. You can't be.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06'Next the cadets are taken into a room
0:03:06 > 0:03:10'which shows them the devastating after-effects of a fire.'
0:03:10 > 0:03:11- COUGHING - Andy, come on. Come in.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18It was really shocking that one item
0:03:18 > 0:03:20can set fire to, like,
0:03:20 > 0:03:24a massive space. One single flame.
0:03:24 > 0:03:28One mistake can lead to your whole house burning down. It's weird.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31Being a fire-fighter is pretty hard.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35People just think that they put out fires and that's the end of it
0:03:35 > 0:03:38but actually, they risk their lives and actually go into fires.
0:03:38 > 0:03:40They have to work out how they'll put out the fire
0:03:40 > 0:03:43so it's not as simple as people think.
0:03:48 > 0:03:53Lesson one will teach them how to get into their fire uniforms -
0:03:53 > 0:03:56also known as Personal Protective Equipment or PPE.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58So we've got steel toe-capped boots at the end
0:03:58 > 0:04:00so we don't damage our feet or toes.
0:04:00 > 0:04:04This PPE is designed to protect fire-fighters
0:04:04 > 0:04:07from temperatures of up to 800 degrees Celsius
0:04:07 > 0:04:10so it's a vital piece of safety kit.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12But it doesn't look like the cadets are paying attention.
0:04:14 > 0:04:15The cadets are in the classroom
0:04:15 > 0:04:19and they think they're just having an important safety briefing
0:04:19 > 0:04:23- from mentor Esther.- I want to cover as much of my skin as possible.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26When in fact, they're about to learn the most important lesson
0:04:26 > 0:04:29to all fire and rescue officers, and that's speed.
0:04:29 > 0:04:30An alarm will go off in a minute.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34It'll give them just two minutes to get in here, the locker room,
0:04:34 > 0:04:37into their specialist protective equipment
0:04:37 > 0:04:39and onto the back of a fire engine,
0:04:39 > 0:04:42so let's see if they've been paying attention
0:04:42 > 0:04:44to what Esther's been telling them.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47Hard helmet. If anything should fall on my head,
0:04:47 > 0:04:49my head will be protected.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52OK, two minutes, starting now. Let's see how they get on.
0:04:53 > 0:04:54ALARM
0:04:54 > 0:04:58Come on, cadets. There's a fire call. Come on, quick, hurry up!
0:04:58 > 0:04:59I'm so confused.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02Everybody's got two minutes!
0:05:02 > 0:05:04Lockers in there.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07PPE. Hurry up. There are people out there waiting for your help.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09Come on, hurry up.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11Every training exercise is a chance
0:05:11 > 0:05:14for the cadets to impress their mentor Esther,
0:05:14 > 0:05:17- who is watching their each and every move.- Hurry up, time is ticking.
0:05:17 > 0:05:18Keep going, keep going.
0:05:18 > 0:05:20Good, Kiera, well done.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23'They are all competing to be chosen as Squad Leader
0:05:23 > 0:05:26'for tomorrow's Hero Squad rescue.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29'And Kiera's in the lead already.'
0:05:29 > 0:05:31Well done, Kiera. First one.
0:05:32 > 0:05:36'Andy, on the other hand, is not making the best first impression.'
0:05:36 > 0:05:39Andy, what's happening there? You've not got anything on yet.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42The others are nearly dressed. Come on!
0:05:46 > 0:05:47So with a bit of teamwork,
0:05:47 > 0:05:50the cadets are finally ready to get on board the fire engines.
0:05:50 > 0:05:54Time's up. We have to get in the fire engine. Grab your stuff and let's go.
0:05:58 > 0:06:02Whoops! Alex's gloves aren't going to be much use to him in there.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08In the back of the fire engine - four minutes and 40 seconds.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10That's over double the time limit.
0:06:10 > 0:06:12SIREN WAILS
0:06:13 > 0:06:17It was amazing riding in the fire engine. I've only sat in one before
0:06:17 > 0:06:20so it was a great new experience. I really enjoyed it.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26Fire engine is so good. It's like, really bumpy.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32Quickly! Out you get, out you get, out you get.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35Well done, Kiera. OK.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37Right, guys, not bad.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39You are all kitted up, other than these gloves.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42Who's missing some gloves? Alex?
0:06:42 > 0:06:44- Sorry.- Need those on your hand.
0:06:44 > 0:06:46Very important.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49I have to say I'm very disappointed in the speed
0:06:49 > 0:06:53that you actually put your PPE on. I expect it to be a lot, lot quicker.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57If you look at each other as well, you haven't got your PPE on properly,
0:06:57 > 0:06:59so we can't do any more work at the moment
0:06:59 > 0:07:02until your PPE is done up correctly.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05So with a few final adjustments,
0:07:05 > 0:07:08the cadets are ready to start their next training exercise.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10They've just learnt the importance
0:07:10 > 0:07:12of getting to the fire in record time
0:07:12 > 0:07:15but their next challenge is to learn
0:07:15 > 0:07:18the fire-fighter's most common method of putting it out -
0:07:18 > 0:07:20- using water.- Right, cadets,
0:07:20 > 0:07:22the instructors here are going to show you
0:07:22 > 0:07:25how to run out a length of hose.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28Watch very, very carefully. Instructors, get to work!
0:07:28 > 0:07:31There's a lot for the cadets to take in here -
0:07:31 > 0:07:34hoses to be connected correctly,
0:07:34 > 0:07:35commands to shout...
0:07:35 > 0:07:37Branch out in the open, three bar pressure!
0:07:37 > 0:07:39..and a Hero Squad target to hit.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43Let's hope they can remember it all
0:07:43 > 0:07:46because Esther's about to split them into two teams,
0:07:46 > 0:07:49- and make them compete in a race. - Number one crew,
0:07:49 > 0:07:51you're going to be racing first, OK?
0:07:51 > 0:07:55Number two crew, you'll be standing back watching number one crew.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58Rav's got the stop watch there and he's going to time the race.
0:07:58 > 0:08:00The fastest crew will win.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02Crew number one, get to work!
0:08:02 > 0:08:06So Andy, Luci and Lewis are off.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09They run out the hose quite quickly, didn't they?
0:08:09 > 0:08:12Yes, but have they done it right? Pulled it too far, see?
0:08:12 > 0:08:15So it won't attach to the back of the fire engine.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20- Branch out in the open!- Branch in the open, three bar pressure!
0:08:20 > 0:08:23Running back, doing really, really well. Very impressed.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27- We've hit the target!- We've hit it!
0:08:30 > 0:08:31Stop, stop!
0:08:33 > 0:08:37So with the water off, all they need to do now is roll up the hoses
0:08:37 > 0:08:39and put everything back into the fire engine.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44And...done.
0:08:44 > 0:08:45Brilliant. Well done.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48- Give the guys a clap. - Well done, guys.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50Really, really good effort.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52- Bit out of breath, Luci? You OK?- Yeah.
0:08:52 > 0:08:55- Lots to remember, wasn't it?- Yeah.
0:08:55 > 0:08:56OK, well done. That's your go.
0:08:56 > 0:09:00- Second team, stand by and wait for your instruction.- Get to work!
0:09:00 > 0:09:01They're off!
0:09:03 > 0:09:06Let's see how Kiera, Katy and Alex get on.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11They have no idea about the first time that was set
0:09:11 > 0:09:14but they obviously have to get their skates on.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16Got your position, so...
0:09:16 > 0:09:18Branch out in the open!
0:09:18 > 0:09:20Three bar pressure!
0:09:20 > 0:09:23'And the pressure is really on for triathlete Kiera.'
0:09:26 > 0:09:29She's also hoping to impress her dad
0:09:29 > 0:09:31who's a fire-fighter himself.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34I would probably consider my dad as a hero
0:09:34 > 0:09:37because he's risked his life to save someone else's
0:09:37 > 0:09:39and I would class that as a hero.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43My dad had given me advice not to panic
0:09:43 > 0:09:46and expect the unexpected
0:09:46 > 0:09:49and to just think before you act.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52I just want to be the person that saves someone's life.
0:09:59 > 0:10:02They're competing against the clock and against each other
0:10:02 > 0:10:06to be chosen as Squad Leader for tomorrow's rescue
0:10:06 > 0:10:08and Katy's caught Esther's eye.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11- I think Katy's looking very good, actually.- She sprints up,
0:10:11 > 0:10:14- very good with the connection.- Yeah.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18Pretty good time so far.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21They're ahead of the first team.
0:10:21 > 0:10:24I'm not really sure if they're beating us, but hopefully not.
0:10:24 > 0:10:26Get in line!
0:10:27 > 0:10:31- Teamwork essential on something like that.- Yeah.- Good.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34Well, one team did it
0:10:34 > 0:10:37in three minutes and four seconds.
0:10:37 > 0:10:42One team did it in two minutes and 55 seconds,
0:10:42 > 0:10:45so there's not a lot in it. Only ten seconds
0:10:45 > 0:10:48but the winning team was the second team.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50- Whoo!- Yes!- Well done, guys.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52- Well done.- Well done.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58It was only ten seconds, so I think we did all right, I guess.
0:11:02 > 0:11:03Last year alone,
0:11:03 > 0:11:07fire fighters across Britain attended 287,000 fires.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10The next part of the cadets' training will teach them
0:11:10 > 0:11:13how to use a piece of equipment critical to saving lives -
0:11:13 > 0:11:16breathing apparatus, or BA.
0:11:16 > 0:11:18The yellow cylinder contains compressed air
0:11:18 > 0:11:21so that fire fighters can breathe inside a burning building.
0:11:21 > 0:11:23Any exposure to any form of smoke,
0:11:23 > 0:11:26we will wear that breathing apparatus set
0:11:26 > 0:11:29so we're not breathing in any toxic fumes whatsoever.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32- So you ready to try it on?- Yeah.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34I can't pick it up!
0:11:34 > 0:11:36It's so heavy!
0:11:36 > 0:11:42'Each set weights 15 kg, which is the equivalent of 15 bags of sugar.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44'That's heavy for any adult
0:11:44 > 0:11:46'so for a 12-year-old, this will not be easy.'
0:11:46 > 0:11:50Katy's not wasting any time, she's already halfway in it.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52So the next thing is your mask.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55'This is the first time that Dorset Fire and Rescue
0:11:55 > 0:11:57'have allowed 12-year-olds to wear breathing apparatus.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00'Even adult fire fighters don't get to try them
0:12:00 > 0:12:03'until several weeks into their training,
0:12:03 > 0:12:05'so the cadets have got a lot to prove!'
0:12:07 > 0:12:09Breathe out and breathe in.
0:12:09 > 0:12:10That's it.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12It was quite scary
0:12:12 > 0:12:15when we first did it but then, once you got used to it, it was fine.
0:12:15 > 0:12:16It's like Darth Vader!
0:12:16 > 0:12:18Yeah, like Darth Vader!
0:12:18 > 0:12:22- Say something to me, so I can hear you.- I like chips!- You like chips?
0:12:22 > 0:12:26It was quite hard to breathe with just a mask on. I was a bit panicky
0:12:26 > 0:12:29but as soon as the gas was on, I could breathe and it was all right.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33You can't hear very well, because all you can hear is your breathing,
0:12:33 > 0:12:36- so you have to talk clearly and very loudly.- Luci? You OK?
0:12:37 > 0:12:41'So all six cadets have conquered wearing breathing apparatus,
0:12:41 > 0:12:43'but for now, it's time to take it off
0:12:43 > 0:12:47and learn a search technique all fire fighters must master -
0:12:47 > 0:12:50- the BA shuffle. - Dave will demonstrate for us
0:12:50 > 0:12:54and the technique he's going to be using is to keep yourself safe,
0:12:54 > 0:12:58but also to be able to find key landmarks inside a room.
0:13:01 > 0:13:03When inside a building filled with smoke,
0:13:03 > 0:13:06fire-fighters can't rely on their sight to navigate.
0:13:06 > 0:13:10So the shuffle helps them feel their way around the building instead,
0:13:10 > 0:13:11using their hands and feet.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14It may seem silly, probably looks a bit silly,
0:13:14 > 0:13:17but you're using it for your safety.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20Right, cadets, you're up. Show us your shuffle.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24Sweeping the hall...
0:13:24 > 0:13:26It's like Strictly Come Dancing.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30MUSIC: "Strictly Come Dancing" theme
0:13:36 > 0:13:37Ow!
0:13:37 > 0:13:39- Seven!- Done exactly what you two did, as well.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42So they may have discovered a new dance craze,
0:13:42 > 0:13:45but they've also learnt a really vital skill.
0:13:45 > 0:13:49Let's hope the cadets can remember it for tomorrow's Hero Squad rescue.
0:13:51 > 0:13:52Coming up...
0:13:52 > 0:13:56The cadets put their training into practice in a Hero Squad emergency.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59SIREN WAILS
0:13:59 > 0:14:01A girl is trapped inside a burning building
0:14:01 > 0:14:04but who will be chosen as Squad Leader?
0:14:04 > 0:14:07And can our cadets handle the pressure?
0:14:07 > 0:14:09Look there's something on the floor.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13The cadets think that's them done for the day
0:14:13 > 0:14:14but what they don't know
0:14:14 > 0:14:17is that they have a last chance to impress Esther
0:14:17 > 0:14:22before she picks her Squad Leader for tomorrow's rescue.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25While the cadets think they're having a well-earned break,
0:14:25 > 0:14:30Esther is setting off a fire hydrant just outside the station.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34She wants to see if the cadets can work together as a team
0:14:34 > 0:14:36to get it under control.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38But how will they react?
0:14:38 > 0:14:42- Guys, quick.- Quick, get your PPE on. Got a job to do.
0:14:42 > 0:14:44We've got a leaking water main. It's your job
0:14:44 > 0:14:49to try and stop the main from leaking more water, so can you hurry up?
0:14:49 > 0:14:50Come on, cadets!
0:14:50 > 0:14:53To get this ten-metre jet of water under control,
0:14:53 > 0:14:57the cadets must cover the water with a five-metre tube.
0:14:57 > 0:14:58Easier said than done
0:14:58 > 0:15:02when the water is pumping out at a thousand litres per minute.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06Andy's getting blown all over the place.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08That's it! Well done, Lewis.
0:15:08 > 0:15:11I was right at the middle. It really hurt your cheeks
0:15:11 > 0:15:14so Lewis had to come in and he had to help me.
0:15:14 > 0:15:16If they can get the tube covering the jet,
0:15:16 > 0:15:20they'll be able to get to the valve to shut the water off.
0:15:23 > 0:15:24Good, Lewis!
0:15:24 > 0:15:26Well done.
0:15:26 > 0:15:28Well done.
0:15:30 > 0:15:31Job done.
0:15:35 > 0:15:37Wet, cold, but awesome at the same time.
0:15:37 > 0:15:39Well done.
0:15:40 > 0:15:44- I think it's time for us to go and dry up.- Yeah.- Bye!
0:15:48 > 0:15:53Well done, cadets, really good effort. How did they get on, Esther?
0:15:53 > 0:15:54That was a really good effort.
0:15:54 > 0:15:57I love the way you were talking to each other as a team.
0:15:57 > 0:15:59We need a Squad Leader for tomorrow
0:15:59 > 0:16:02and the person we think should lead tomorrow,
0:16:02 > 0:16:05and it is a difficult challenge tomorrow...
0:16:09 > 0:16:12..is going to be you, Katy, from what we've seen today.
0:16:12 > 0:16:13OK? So well done.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18You can lead the others tomorrow. Big one. It's going to be hard.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21Make sure you get a good night's sleep tonight
0:16:21 > 0:16:23because you're going to need it.
0:16:25 > 0:16:29Football-mad Katy is no stranger to leading a team.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33Katy's always wanted to be the captain of the team,
0:16:33 > 0:16:36asking, "Can I be captain today?" She likes to lead.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39- She's a good organiser, gets on well with everybody.- Oops-a-daisy.
0:16:39 > 0:16:40I wouldn't say I'm bossy.
0:16:42 > 0:16:46I take everybody's ideas, everybody gets a say in what happens.
0:16:48 > 0:16:51Even if anything looks a bit too tough, I'll keep going
0:16:51 > 0:16:55and I won't stop until I've overcome it and I've done it.
0:17:03 > 0:17:05Yesterday, the cadets learned the skills
0:17:05 > 0:17:07they need to reform a fire rescue.
0:17:07 > 0:17:09Well, today is rescue day
0:17:09 > 0:17:12and they'll have to put all those skills into practice
0:17:12 > 0:17:14on a Hero Squad emergency.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16They finished on a high yesterday
0:17:16 > 0:17:17but today the heat is really on
0:17:17 > 0:17:20as they have a huge challenge on their hands.
0:17:21 > 0:17:22It's 7am
0:17:22 > 0:17:25and Hero Squad casualty Hannah is sound asleep in bed.
0:17:25 > 0:17:29The plug socket in her living room is dangerously overloaded.
0:17:29 > 0:17:31It has started to overheat,
0:17:31 > 0:17:34and the sparks have turned into flames.
0:17:35 > 0:17:37Hannah does have a smoke alarm,
0:17:37 > 0:17:41but it isn't working. She took the batteries out last night
0:17:41 > 0:17:45when she needed to replace the ones in her remote control. Bad move!
0:17:45 > 0:17:48If you don't have working smoke alarms in your home,
0:17:48 > 0:17:52your chances of surviving a fire when you're asleep are almost zero.
0:17:52 > 0:17:56The clock is ticking, and the Hero Squad must act fast.
0:17:58 > 0:18:01Completely unaware of what lies in store, the cadets are on duty
0:18:01 > 0:18:04and carrying out the fire station's daily checks.
0:18:04 > 0:18:08Find something that might look like a step chock.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10There's one, two, three.
0:18:10 > 0:18:14Every fire engine contains over 200 pieces of equipment,
0:18:14 > 0:18:17so the cadets are checking it's all there, so they're ready to go
0:18:17 > 0:18:19at a moment's notice.
0:18:19 > 0:18:21ALARM
0:18:21 > 0:18:24- All right, quick, we've got to go. - Locker room. Go, quickly!
0:18:24 > 0:18:26Quick, quick, quick!
0:18:27 > 0:18:30Right, you lot, you know how to do it. You have two minutes.
0:18:30 > 0:18:34I want you kitted out and in the back of the fire engines, quickly!
0:18:34 > 0:18:37Katy, you want to go and get the turnout sheet from the printer?
0:18:37 > 0:18:40The turnout sheet contains all the vital information they have
0:18:40 > 0:18:43about the fire they're heading to.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46- Go!- Let's go, this way. One, two, three, four, five, six.
0:18:48 > 0:18:50Esther will be watching
0:18:50 > 0:18:53how the cadets deal with this Hero Squad emergency,
0:18:53 > 0:18:55and the cadet who impresses her the most
0:18:55 > 0:18:57will be awarded "Hero of the Day".
0:18:57 > 0:19:00And that could go to anyone, even squad leader Katy,
0:19:00 > 0:19:03who's taken on the role like a pro,
0:19:03 > 0:19:06and is already giving out her instructions.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09We need four people to go into the building
0:19:09 > 0:19:12and do a search with the BAs on.
0:19:12 > 0:19:15You four, you're going to do the hose if we need it
0:19:15 > 0:19:17and we're going to watch from outside
0:19:17 > 0:19:19and make sure everything is OK from outside.
0:19:23 > 0:19:28So while Luci, Alex, Lewis and Kiera get into their breathing apparatus,
0:19:28 > 0:19:30Katy and Andy start running the hoses.
0:19:32 > 0:19:35But there's a problem almost immediately.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38There appears to be no water coming from the fire engine.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43Luckily, squad leader Katy has a plan.
0:19:45 > 0:19:48Andy, we need some more water, so we need to run a hose out.
0:19:50 > 0:19:52With no water in the fire engine,
0:19:52 > 0:19:56she plans to get Andy to connect the new hose to the fire hydrant.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59Andy's going to open up the hydrant so they've got loads of water
0:19:59 > 0:20:02because they need to get into that building fast.
0:20:02 > 0:20:03There's a lady trapped up there.
0:20:04 > 0:20:07Inside the building, Hero Squad casualty Hannah
0:20:07 > 0:20:10has now woken up and seen the smoke. She acts fast
0:20:10 > 0:20:13and smothers the bottom of her bedroom door with her duvet
0:20:13 > 0:20:15to keep the smoke out.
0:20:15 > 0:20:18- Keeping the door shut and smothered...- Help!
0:20:18 > 0:20:21..can give the person inside an extra 20-30 minutes.
0:20:21 > 0:20:25- Whatever happens, the priority is to get the casualty out.- Help!
0:20:25 > 0:20:28So with the BA crew kitted up,
0:20:28 > 0:20:30the pressure is on Katy
0:20:30 > 0:20:33to give them clear instructions before they go inside.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36OK, you two are going to go on a right-hand search
0:20:36 > 0:20:40and you two are going to go on a left-hand search.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43You're team one and you're team two.
0:20:43 > 0:20:47- OK.- But she still needs to find a way into the building -
0:20:47 > 0:20:51a problem that fire-fighters often face when the door is locked.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54- Locked.- What are you going to do? - We have to go through a window.
0:20:54 > 0:20:58Katy said the door's locked. She'll have to go in through the window.
0:21:03 > 0:21:06So Katy grabs the fireman's spear
0:21:06 > 0:21:09so that she can smash the window and get the Hero Squad inside.
0:21:09 > 0:21:11Come on, Katy!
0:21:14 > 0:21:17When Katy smashed the window, I thought it was just plastic
0:21:17 > 0:21:21and it was going to crack a bit and we'd have to pull it open.
0:21:21 > 0:21:24But then she hit it and it just smashed like glass.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26I think it was glass.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30I really liked breaking the window.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32It was really fun as well.
0:21:32 > 0:21:35My first three attempts didn't go that well,
0:21:35 > 0:21:39but once I got the hang of it, the window shattered completely
0:21:39 > 0:21:40and it just fell to the floor.
0:21:43 > 0:21:44Katy's just smashed the window
0:21:44 > 0:21:47and she's telling her troops to get kitted up
0:21:47 > 0:21:48as they're going in through there!
0:21:48 > 0:21:52I want you to search the whole building, OK?
0:21:52 > 0:21:55Start on the bottom floor. If you can't find anything, move up.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58Keen to follow in her dad's footsteps,
0:21:58 > 0:22:01Kiera bravely leads the team inside. Kiera!
0:22:01 > 0:22:03You're leading.
0:22:07 > 0:22:10The cadets are not entering a real burning building
0:22:10 > 0:22:12but this synthetic smoke simulates
0:22:12 > 0:22:16what fire fighters encounter in a real-life rescue situation.
0:22:16 > 0:22:21And for our 12-year-olds who are carrying 15kg of equipment,
0:22:21 > 0:22:23it's a dangerous challenge.
0:22:24 > 0:22:27I was quite nervous on what we was going into
0:22:27 > 0:22:30cos we couldn't see anything, so you didn't know what you'd to walk into,
0:22:30 > 0:22:32we didn't know what we was trying to find,
0:22:32 > 0:22:34how many people we was trying to find.
0:22:36 > 0:22:38So with team one safely inside,
0:22:38 > 0:22:42Katy sends in team two - Luci and Lewis.
0:22:42 > 0:22:45On the first store to start with. Luci's leading.
0:22:49 > 0:22:51Once we got inside the building,
0:22:51 > 0:22:54I felt quite excited but it was quite scary as well.
0:22:58 > 0:23:00So both teams are now inside,
0:23:00 > 0:23:04but it's Kiera who spots their first vital clue.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06She's taken the smoke alarm out!
0:23:08 > 0:23:10And the battery's on the side.
0:23:10 > 0:23:15Alex then finds what he thinks is the source of the fire.
0:23:15 > 0:23:17Look there's something on the floor.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21That's the cause of the fire!
0:23:21 > 0:23:25But still no sign of the missing girl.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28There's a door here!
0:23:29 > 0:23:31Go through the door!
0:23:31 > 0:23:34You OK? You OK?
0:23:34 > 0:23:35Yeah. I'm OK.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49I felt like a fire-fighter when I was in there
0:23:49 > 0:23:52because, you know, the teamwork was there.
0:23:52 > 0:23:53We were all shouting commands.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55The cadets are doing a fantastic job
0:23:55 > 0:24:00of getting the Hero Squad casualty out safely.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02They've got a casualty!
0:24:02 > 0:24:04Just on the side, please!
0:24:04 > 0:24:07I felt proud when the team brought the casualty out
0:24:07 > 0:24:10because they'd all worked really well and all brought her out
0:24:10 > 0:24:13and she was out safely and she was unharmed.
0:24:15 > 0:24:17Are you going upstairs?
0:24:20 > 0:24:21So to complete their search,
0:24:21 > 0:24:25the BA teams head upstairs to ensure
0:24:25 > 0:24:27that there's no-one else in any danger.
0:24:27 > 0:24:30AMBULANCE SIREN WHOOPS
0:24:30 > 0:24:32Was there anybody else inside with you?
0:24:32 > 0:24:35- No, it was just me. - So there's no-one else inside.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37Your team's still in there. You need to get them out.
0:24:37 > 0:24:40Brilliant from Katy. She just asked the victim
0:24:40 > 0:24:43if there was anyone else inside. She said no, she's alone,
0:24:43 > 0:24:45so she can get her team out of there.
0:24:45 > 0:24:48There's nobody else in the building! Come out!
0:24:48 > 0:24:51So while Katy gets the BA crews out of the building,
0:24:51 > 0:24:53Andy's with the ambulance team
0:24:53 > 0:24:56who are automatically called out when there's a fire.
0:24:56 > 0:25:00Just be calm, everything will be all right. We'll sort out everything.
0:25:05 > 0:25:09And thanks to our cadets, she's now safely on her way to hospital.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20We've seen how the fire-fighters work
0:25:20 > 0:25:22and how dangerous their jobs are.
0:25:22 > 0:25:25It's like, you don't want to mess around with fire
0:25:25 > 0:25:28or else you could take your own life or someone else's.
0:25:31 > 0:25:34I would definitely consider being a fire-fighter,
0:25:34 > 0:25:37going into and saving people, like, helping people,
0:25:37 > 0:25:40I think that would be a real sense of achievement.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43And so with the rescue a success,
0:25:43 > 0:25:48the transformation from cadet to fire-fighter is complete.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55So all that remains is for Esther and me to discuss
0:25:55 > 0:25:57who we think is "Hero of the Day".
0:25:57 > 0:26:01I thought Katy did a great job as leader today.
0:26:01 > 0:26:04Yeah, fabulous job. She had lots of decisions to make.
0:26:04 > 0:26:06Really tough decisions as well.
0:26:06 > 0:26:09She showed some really strong leadership qualities.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Kiera did really well. Fearless as ever.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14- And so was Luci.- She knew, clearly in her head, what she had to do.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17So lots of strong performances
0:26:17 > 0:26:20but there can only be one Hero of the Day.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23Cadets, well done.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25- Who enjoyed that?- Me.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29Really, really good effort and some fearless work from all of you there.
0:26:29 > 0:26:33I'd like to thank you for all your efforts. It's been brilliant.
0:26:33 > 0:26:35Esther's had a word with her colleagues
0:26:35 > 0:26:38to sort out a treat for one of you to go up in that vehicle,
0:26:38 > 0:26:41to ride that up to the very top, over 100 feet high.
0:26:41 > 0:26:45Unfortunately for the other five of you, there are all these hoses
0:26:45 > 0:26:47and all this equipment that needs tidying up,
0:26:47 > 0:26:51cleaning up and putting away safely. Sorry, but it's part of the job.
0:26:51 > 0:26:54It's been a tough one, cos you've all done some really good work
0:26:54 > 0:26:56but the person who we decided,
0:26:56 > 0:27:00Esther and I, should be Hero of the Day is...
0:27:09 > 0:27:13- It's you, Katy. Well done.- Well done.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20Well done today. Good effort.
0:27:22 > 0:27:25Katy's been a fantastic Squad Leader today.
0:27:25 > 0:27:28She's made tough decisions under pressure,
0:27:28 > 0:27:30shown real determination
0:27:30 > 0:27:33and led her team to success.
0:27:33 > 0:27:36She is most definitely the Hero of the Day.
0:27:41 > 0:27:43Coming up on Hero Squad -
0:27:43 > 0:27:47the cadets face one of their toughest challenges yet.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51Will they be able to rescue an injured walker
0:27:51 > 0:27:53stranded on a remote moor?
0:27:53 > 0:27:54Find out next time.
