0:00:07 > 0:00:09Coming up on Hero Squad...
0:00:09 > 0:00:11six wannabe heroes...
0:00:15 > 0:00:19..facing the worst nature can throw at them.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24There's a new emergency crew in town.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29I am Rav Wilding and this is Hero Squad.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35Six ordinary school kids.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41Their mission? To learn how to save lives.
0:00:44 > 0:00:49But do they have what it takes to become real-life heroes?
0:00:52 > 0:00:55The cadets have arrived at Sandbanks in Dorset,
0:00:55 > 0:00:57one of Britain's most popular beaches.
0:01:00 > 0:01:02They have just one day to train
0:01:02 > 0:01:05and learn all the skills they need to perform a daring rescue
0:01:05 > 0:01:09out at sea after a windsurfer has got herself into trouble.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15Only then will they have proved they are tough enough
0:01:15 > 0:01:17to join the ranks of the RNLI lifeguards.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Today, you are going to be learning
0:01:25 > 0:01:29if you are worthy to wear the colours of the RNLI lifeguards.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31- Are you ready to meet your mentor? - Yes.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33Let's bring her in.
0:01:41 > 0:01:42Good morning, cadets.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46My name is Laura and I am going to be your mentor.
0:01:46 > 0:01:50Laura Barnett is part of a crack squad of RNLI lifeguards
0:01:50 > 0:01:52who keep Britain's swimmers safe.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54Laura's got eyes like a hawk
0:01:54 > 0:01:58and is an expert at patrolling these potentially dangerous beaches.
0:01:59 > 0:02:03But can she teach our rookie lifeguards how to save lives
0:02:03 > 0:02:05out at sea and on the shore?
0:02:05 > 0:02:08For the Hero Squad cadets, it's sink or swim.
0:02:08 > 0:02:09It's going to be quite tough,
0:02:09 > 0:02:12we're really going to put you guys through your paces.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14I need to check out some of the skills you've already got
0:02:14 > 0:02:18but we're doing it in a better environment, off to a pool.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24It's just 18 degrees in that water
0:02:24 > 0:02:27and the lifeguards are setting it up for a tough challenge
0:02:27 > 0:02:30that mentor Laura has decided to give to the cadets.
0:02:31 > 0:02:37A lifeguard must be able to rescue anyone up to 300 metres out to sea.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40So mentor Laura's first challenge is for the cadets
0:02:40 > 0:02:43to swim 16 lengths of this 25 metre pool.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48That alone is a huge challenge for any 12 or 13-year-old,
0:02:48 > 0:02:50but it doesn't end there.
0:02:50 > 0:02:55They've got to do it in the RNLI lifeguard time of 7.5 minutes.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58Hopefully I am going to swim like a fish.
0:02:58 > 0:02:59Piece of cake!
0:02:59 > 0:03:03Two cadets in particular are going to be worried about this test.
0:03:03 > 0:03:04Football maestro Katy
0:03:04 > 0:03:10and snowboarder Lewis are much happier on dry land.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Well, I am not the most confident swimmer so if I run out of stamina
0:03:13 > 0:03:15I'd be scared I'd drown.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20I wouldn't say I am the strongest ever swimmer.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23I can swim enough to stay alive.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26Let's see how they get on.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32First to test their swimming skills, Kiera, Katy and Andy.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40While Kiera sets a blisteringly fast pace,
0:03:40 > 0:03:44it looks like Katy was right to be nervous - she's struggling.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48The furthest Katy has ever managed before
0:03:48 > 0:03:50is four lengths of a swimming pool
0:03:52 > 0:03:56And what about Andy, he said he was confident and he'd swim like a fish.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59Hm, doesn't look like any fish I can think of!
0:04:01 > 0:04:05If any of the cadets do fail this all-important swim test -
0:04:05 > 0:04:07there's no way Laura can let them continue.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11Amazing time. Well done, Kiera!
0:04:11 > 0:04:16Kiera finishes first and, to me, that seemed fast. Then, Katy.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19Well done!
0:04:19 > 0:04:23Katy has gone four times further in that pool
0:04:23 > 0:04:25than she's ever swam before in her life.
0:04:25 > 0:04:29I think that alone is a fantastic effort.
0:04:29 > 0:04:30Followed by Andy.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36Next up to face the swim test challenge are Alex.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39- Is this going to be cold? - No, it's tropical!
0:04:40 > 0:04:42Luci...
0:04:42 > 0:04:44And snowboarder Lewis.
0:04:44 > 0:04:48In three, two, one.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54Alex starts strongly and shows some good technique.
0:04:56 > 0:05:00But very quickly it becomes obvious Lewis cannot keep up the pace.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02THEY SHOUT ENCOURAGEMENT
0:05:04 > 0:05:07Luci completes the challenge first, followed by Alex.
0:05:10 > 0:05:15And Lewis will be over the moon that he made it.
0:05:15 > 0:05:16I feel all light-headed now!
0:05:20 > 0:05:22I want to go to bed!
0:05:22 > 0:05:23I tried my best.
0:05:23 > 0:05:25I feel proud of myself.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29So, let's take a look at the lifeguard league table.
0:05:30 > 0:05:34Andy, Lewis and Katy swam well but they are in the bottom three.
0:05:36 > 0:05:40Alex was the fastest out of the boys with a time of 9 minutes.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45Luci clocked 8 minutes, 13 seconds.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48All the cadets think if they didn't complete the challenge in
0:05:48 > 0:05:50under 7.5 minutes,
0:05:50 > 0:05:54they won't continue with the all-important lifeguard training.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57But mentor Laura was secretly testing their stamina.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01Could they push themselves? I think we can safely say yes.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04But we still need to reveal the time of one cadet.
0:06:07 > 0:06:11You had 7.5 minutes to do 16 lengths.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13- And you completed it... - In five minutes, seven.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18That means at just 13 years old,
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Kiera is already swimming fast enough to mean
0:06:20 > 0:06:24she could qualify to be an RNLI lifeguard.
0:06:24 > 0:06:28That's worth seeing again. Move over Rebecca Adlington!
0:06:29 > 0:06:32Back in the pool again, the cadets are learning how to use
0:06:32 > 0:06:35another important bit of lifeguards' kit.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39This board is very stable.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42It's unlikely you will fall off it but see how you do later on.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45These big yellow things are called rescue boards
0:06:45 > 0:06:50and they are specially designed for saving people in trouble out at sea.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53First up is a lesson on how to steer and paddle.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58And then how to get a struggling swimmer onto the board.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02At this point, get your weight up onto the strap
0:07:02 > 0:07:03and roll the board over.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13It's a good start from the cadets but, as Katy and Luci discover,
0:07:13 > 0:07:16steering the boards isn't as easy as it looked.
0:07:17 > 0:07:21They had better be careful though, each one is worth nearly £1,000.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29We've got a traffic jam up here!
0:07:29 > 0:07:33Katy is splashing Luci more than anything else!
0:07:33 > 0:07:35- Well done, guys.- Mayhem.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38Once they've got the steering sorted,
0:07:38 > 0:07:40our learner-plate lifeguards are doing a great job.
0:07:42 > 0:07:46One of the shortest cadets, Lewis, at just 1.5 metres,
0:07:46 > 0:07:47has got his work cut out.
0:07:49 > 0:07:53Lewis is a lot smaller than Andy. Let's see if he can flip it round.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55Well done, he's done it. Well done.
0:07:55 > 0:07:57But what the cadets don't know is that this pool
0:07:57 > 0:08:01has some extra features to help with lifeguard training.
0:08:01 > 0:08:04I'm about to make things a little bit more challenging.
0:08:04 > 0:08:08It looks like they are having a little bit too much fun down there
0:08:08 > 0:08:12so it's time to crank it up a bit. Let's give them some waves!
0:08:14 > 0:08:17The choppy conditions are really challenging the cadets
0:08:17 > 0:08:20and as a final test, they are going to have to perform
0:08:20 > 0:08:23a real-life rescue - that will be me then.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26- They are ready for a proper rescue. - Bring it on!
0:08:30 > 0:08:33The cadets have really got their work cut out for them here.
0:08:38 > 0:08:40Alex is definitely the leader -
0:08:40 > 0:08:44directing me onto the board and then making sure I am safely taken back.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54I think Rav was being a bit of a baby. Not a bit, a lot!
0:08:56 > 0:08:59Rav was panicking quite a lot.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02And then it's good work from Alex again as he makes sure
0:09:02 > 0:09:04I'm taken safely to dry land.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08Who was grabbing me from behind?
0:09:08 > 0:09:10Very good, Alex. Holding onto my legs.
0:09:10 > 0:09:15Yeah, I thought they did very well. Luci told me to get off and swim.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17So, I got off!
0:09:17 > 0:09:21Next up, we are getting you out and dry and heading to the beach.
0:09:21 > 0:09:23Whoo-hoo!
0:09:27 > 0:09:32On their managed beaches it's down to the RNLI lifeguards to keep
0:09:32 > 0:09:36members of the public on the beach and in the sea safe.
0:09:36 > 0:09:38It's an important job and who would have thought
0:09:38 > 0:09:40this group of 12 and 13-year-olds
0:09:40 > 0:09:44would be allowed to patrol a section of Boscombe Beach for the day?
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Mentor Laura is looking for a squad leader
0:09:48 > 0:09:51who will take charge of tomorrow's Hero Squad challenge.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54So the cadets need to impress her.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00Cadets, most of you are probably pretty correctly dressed
0:10:00 > 0:10:02and well done.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04Katy, you are not making a rap video!
0:10:04 > 0:10:06# Let's go to the beach, each
0:10:06 > 0:10:07# Let's go get a wave... #
0:10:07 > 0:10:11Once we've sorted that out the cadets split into three groups
0:10:11 > 0:10:14to practice on the walkie-talkies and learn some new call signs.
0:10:14 > 0:10:18Good communication is a vital skill for any new lifeguard.
0:10:18 > 0:10:20Hero Squad one, Hero Squad one.
0:10:20 > 0:10:22Hero Squad three, Hero Squad three.
0:10:22 > 0:10:24This is Hero Squad one, over.
0:10:24 > 0:10:28Andy takes the opportunity to show off some new dance moves.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32This is Hero Squad three, I'd like you to um...
0:10:33 > 0:10:37I'd like you to do a funky chicken dance. Over.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46Hero Squad three, this is Hero Squad three.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49No, thank you, we would not like to do a chicken dance, over.
0:10:52 > 0:10:56But these walkie-talkies are no use when a lifeguard is in the water,
0:10:56 > 0:10:59so the RNLI have a system of hand signals
0:10:59 > 0:11:02that mentor Laura is going to teach to the cadets.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05If we line up in a horseshoe...
0:11:09 > 0:11:12So we use hand signals as lifeguards
0:11:12 > 0:11:14because you can see that really clearly.
0:11:14 > 0:11:16If we want them to move to our right,
0:11:16 > 0:11:20we put our right arm up. Excellent.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24And if we want them to move to our left, the other one.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26Andy, wrong arm!
0:11:26 > 0:11:28Other way now, Andy. Brilliant.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31OK, we need to be able to pick up a casualty.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34We've got somebody in trouble to our left,
0:11:34 > 0:11:37our left arm goes up to point to where they are
0:11:37 > 0:11:40and our right arm would do a little dance in the air.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43Like a little yee-ha!
0:11:51 > 0:11:53And that is our signal for "pickup swimmer".
0:11:54 > 0:11:56That's a really important one.
0:11:57 > 0:12:01Let's hope the cadets can remember the lifeguard lingo.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04Tomorrow, they will have to communicate with each other
0:12:04 > 0:12:07when they are called to a Hero Squad emergency.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10A windsurfer is injured in the sea and needs their help.
0:12:18 > 0:12:21Next up, Laura sets them off on a beach patrol.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24I've planted a couple of Hero Squad hazards
0:12:24 > 0:12:28that I want the cadets to spot, stop and report back to base.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36Hero Squad one takes the tower with mentor Laura.
0:12:38 > 0:12:41So, up here, look, we can see a lot more than we could stood on the beach
0:12:41 > 0:12:43because we are that bit higher.
0:12:43 > 0:12:47Hero Squad two, three and me hit the beach.
0:12:47 > 0:12:52Beach patrols like this are a vital part of every lifeguard's job.
0:12:52 > 0:12:53Their actions on these patrols
0:12:53 > 0:12:56can prevent accidents before they happen.
0:12:57 > 0:12:59It might look like a bit of innocent fun
0:12:59 > 0:13:02but this inflatable croc could spell danger.
0:13:05 > 0:13:08What's our worry potentially with that little girl on the inflatable?
0:13:08 > 0:13:11Because the inflatable could get dragged out to sea.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14It looks like they might be seeing it anyway.
0:13:14 > 0:13:16- The current is quite strong at the moment.- Is it?
0:13:16 > 0:13:19Maybe we shouldn't go on there today then, Daisy.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22Let's play on the beach with it.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24Thank you.
0:13:24 > 0:13:27Hero Squad one, Hero Squad one, this is Hero Squad three.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30We have spoken to the mother with the inflatable and girl
0:13:30 > 0:13:33and she will stay on the beach. Over.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Excellent, we are all back. Brilliant.
0:13:37 > 0:13:41So, that's our dry bit done down the beach.
0:13:41 > 0:13:45- Now it's time to get you back in your wetsuits and into the sea.- Yes!
0:13:45 > 0:13:47Let's go get kitted up.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53The cadets head towards the sea
0:13:53 > 0:13:56in their specially-adapted wetsuits and rash vests.
0:13:56 > 0:14:00The English Channel can roughly be a chilly ten degrees,
0:14:00 > 0:14:03so they need all the help they can get to stay warm.
0:14:03 > 0:14:07As a final challenge, the boys are going head-to-head with the girls
0:14:07 > 0:14:11in a lifeguard triathlon - run, swim and board.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16We are going to win. We are going to thrash the boys.
0:14:16 > 0:14:18I think our secret weapon is Alex
0:14:18 > 0:14:21because he's going to beat Kiera at swimming.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24- Am I?!- Yeah, you are going to go right past.
0:14:24 > 0:14:28Three, two, one.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30Oi, get back here, Lewis! Get back here.
0:14:30 > 0:14:34'Hold on, hold on - no cheaters allowed in Hero Squad!
0:14:34 > 0:14:37'Five push-ups as a punishment for Lewis.'
0:14:37 > 0:14:41Right, runners - three, two, one. Go!
0:14:43 > 0:14:46It's important for a lifeguard to do the running
0:14:46 > 0:14:49because they need to get to the scene as quickly as possible.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53It's a good first leg from keen footballer Katy.
0:14:55 > 0:14:57She's off!
0:14:57 > 0:15:02- Kiera's off already. Come on, Alex. You got to catch up.- Go on, Alex.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05On the swim out, Laura is looking for capability
0:15:05 > 0:15:07and strength in the water.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10The cadets need to read the sea conditions
0:15:10 > 0:15:11and show the waves who's boss.
0:15:14 > 0:15:15In a real-life rescue,
0:15:15 > 0:15:19speed through the water could be the difference between life and death.
0:15:19 > 0:15:22He won't give up. Good swimmer, Alex. Good, strong swim.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25Quite different out there as well. A lot colder.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28That was a killer leg from Kiera.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31She's given Luci a massive lead over the boys.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33Go on, Andy. Good lad.
0:15:39 > 0:15:43It looks like the girls are way ahead but, hold on -
0:15:43 > 0:15:44Luci's lost her bearings.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48Could this be the chance the boys are looking for?
0:15:48 > 0:15:52Luci's gone way off there. She was on her way to Calais!
0:15:52 > 0:15:57The boards kept drifting off to the left and then I got really tired.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00With a bit of help from her friends, Luci gets her bearings,
0:16:00 > 0:16:02heads for home and...
0:16:03 > 0:16:06..it's victory for the girls.
0:16:06 > 0:16:08Come on, Andy, to the finish!
0:16:08 > 0:16:14The boys stagger home but, most importantly, they didn't give up.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17Well done, go and put a coat on. Go and grab a coat.
0:16:18 > 0:16:20It's the end of training.
0:16:20 > 0:16:23The cadets have had their swimming skills put to the test,
0:16:23 > 0:16:25learned how to use a rescue board
0:16:25 > 0:16:29and patrolled a section of beach.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33Tomorrow, an injured windsurfer is cast adrift at sea
0:16:33 > 0:16:34and needs their help.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37They will need a strong leader who can guide them
0:16:37 > 0:16:40through the tough Hero Squad challenge.
0:16:44 > 0:16:46OK, cadets.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49There's one person who showed some good leadership skills today.
0:16:49 > 0:16:52And we think the person that should do it tomorrow
0:16:52 > 0:16:54is going to be you, Alex.
0:16:54 > 0:16:56Well done, mate. Well done.
0:16:56 > 0:16:57Really impressive, well done.
0:16:59 > 0:17:04I think I became squad leader because I think Rav was grateful
0:17:04 > 0:17:07that I saved him from his little accident.
