0:00:02 > 0:00:07These wannabe heroes are working together to perform daring rescues.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Over the toughest terrain...

0:00:21 > 0:00:23..experiencing the highs...

0:00:25 > 0:00:26..and lows.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32There's a new emergency crew in town.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37I'm Rav Wilding and this is Hero Squad.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Six ordinary schoolkids.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47Their mission, to learn how to save lives.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54But do they have what it takes to become real life heroes?

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Last time, the cadets rescued two Hero Squad Casualties

0:01:03 > 0:01:05from a freezing lake.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08Squad leader Kyra struggled to take charge.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10You need to stay down there...

0:01:10 > 0:01:14And it was Sam who swam to victory to take the Hero of the Day prize.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20This time, the cadets take to the seas,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23crewing up the biggest lifeboat in the RNLI's fleet.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Can they rescue a woman who's injured, freezing cold

0:01:27 > 0:01:29and cut off by the tide?

0:01:33 > 0:01:36The cadets are on their way to a mystery training location.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43As always on Hero Squad, they have no idea what's in store,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46just that it involves a breathtaking journey to the

0:01:46 > 0:01:50Kintyre peninsula in southwest Scotland.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Their destination is Campbeltown,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58home to the Hero Squad for the next two days.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03This place is absolutely stunning, but so remote.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06It's a three-hour drive that way to the nearest

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Scottish city, which is Glasgow, 140 miles away.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12In fact, we're nearer to Belfast,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16which is a mere 60 miles that way across the Irish sea.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21The cadets have a tough day of training in store,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24that's if they can survive getting off the plane.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33First stop, the Tourist Information Centre

0:02:33 > 0:02:35to get some clues about what they'll be doing.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38- Yeah! - Scotland!

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Little do they know is that somewhere, in amongst all

0:02:42 > 0:02:45that highland cattle, is their mentor working in disguise.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Do you want this open or shut?

0:02:48 > 0:02:55Morning. Good to see you brushing up on your local knowledge, cadets.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Who's noticed this man behind the counter?

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Yeah?

0:03:00 > 0:03:01Morning, cadets.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05I'm David Cox, you can call me Coxy, and I'm your mentor.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07THEY LAUGH

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Mentor David Cox - Coxy for short -

0:03:15 > 0:03:18has been with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution

0:03:18 > 0:03:20for almost 30 years.

0:03:23 > 0:03:28Last year, RNLI lifeboats rescued almost 8,000 people around the UK.

0:03:30 > 0:03:35And in the last five years, Coxy and his crew rescued 146 casualties.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I work with 26 guys who are volunteers.

0:03:42 > 0:03:43Every one of them has a day job,

0:03:43 > 0:03:47like what I'm doing in here at the moment, volunteering.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49When the pagers go, these guys respond

0:03:49 > 0:03:51and they turn up to the lifeboat to go on a rescue.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53Coxy, there's a little prop down there

0:03:53 > 0:03:56that I want to show the cadets.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59- Thank you. - THEY GROAN

0:03:59 > 0:04:02So, cadets, who recognises this? Where have you seen it before, Lily?

0:04:02 > 0:04:04In our Hero Squad bags.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10The lifejackets were a big Hero Squad clue.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13So why do you think you might need one of these? Kyra?

0:04:13 > 0:04:17If you're out on the water it will help you save a life, basically.

0:04:17 > 0:04:18'That's right, Kyra,

0:04:18 > 0:04:21'and you're going to need it sooner than you think.'

0:04:25 > 0:04:27The cadets will be learning to operate the biggest lifeboat

0:04:27 > 0:04:32in the RNLI Fleet - the Severn Class all-weather lifeboat.

0:04:34 > 0:04:35SHE GROANS

0:04:35 > 0:04:38But first they're getting kitted up in dry suits for some basic

0:04:38 > 0:04:40inshore boat handling.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Mentor Coxy has just one day to turn this lot into an RNLI crew.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51They each need to impress him, because one of them will be

0:04:51 > 0:04:54named squad leader for a tough Hero Squad rescue tomorrow.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59And that appointment will need Coxy's seal of approval.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10The cadets are being driven straight out to sea, RNLI style.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18They're on board Campbeltown's D-class inshore lifeboat

0:05:18 > 0:05:20and they're not just going to be passengers.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26OK, all the way. All the way.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Coxy's letting the cadets take the controls

0:05:28 > 0:05:30under the watchful eyes of his crew.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35That's Kyra driving.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38Perfect.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41At just five metres long,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44this lifeboat's pretty nifty in shallow water rescues.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48It's so cool, right.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51The front of the boat, it goes up and down and bounces.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54You're going to love it. It's like you're bouncing.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56And it splashes your face, like woah.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Keen Sailor Sam is finding it easy.

0:06:00 > 0:06:01OK, turn to port.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03In towards you.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Then round to starboard, so it's away from you.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09That's port to the left and starboard to the right.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Bring it right round.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Bringing it round nicely there.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18If they're going to be an RNLI lifeboat crew,

0:06:18 > 0:06:21the cadets must prove to their mentor they're confident at sea,

0:06:21 > 0:06:23and this lot certainly seem to be.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Do you want to do it?

0:06:29 > 0:06:31'But one cadet's looking worried.'

0:06:31 > 0:06:32- You'll be OK.- Are you OK?

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Can I have a word with Myles just myself? Myles, come here, son.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37'Maybe a pep talk from Coxy will help.'

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Myles isn't very confident about going in the boat.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46I think it's because he's got a slight fear of being on the water,

0:06:46 > 0:06:48but hopefully he'll do it.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50OK. You're going to have great fun.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Once you get your hand on that throttle and you feel that

0:06:52 > 0:06:55boat doing what you want it to do, you're going to love it.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Honestly, you'll have great fun.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Tennis-mad Myles is much happier on dry land

0:07:04 > 0:07:08and admits he can get nervous around water.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11Swimming's not one of my strong points.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14I do other sports, but I'm not the strongest swimmer.

0:07:16 > 0:07:21But when he joined Hero Squad he promised he would take on anything.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Once I've set something I have to achieve it, I don't like to

0:07:24 > 0:07:30just give up, and I like to try my hardest and try my best.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39OK, let's go. Let's do it.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44After a bit of encouragement, Myles decides to give it a go.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49It's OK. You're now in control of the boat.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Myles may be taking it slower than the other cadets...

0:07:53 > 0:07:57- Nice and gently. - ..but he's keeping good control.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00OK, so keep going. Straighten up now. That's you.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06It wasn't easy for him, but Myles has proved he can cope at sea.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08That's good. Well done. Brilliant.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12Crucial if you're going to be on an RNLI lifeboat crew.

0:08:14 > 0:08:15Well done, Myles.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19It tells a bit about the character if he's keen to have a go.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21So, no, fair play to him.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Myles did really well. He was really nervous at the start,

0:08:26 > 0:08:30but he's done really well to overcome a fear.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32You did very well.

0:08:36 > 0:08:41Tomorrow the cadets will need all their lifeboat skills...

0:08:41 > 0:08:45as they rescue an injured woman trapped at high tide.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48The only way to reach her is by heading out to sea.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50The cadets are going to need a bigger boat.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55How about this one?

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Campeltown's Severn Class all-weather lifeboat.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02It's more than 17 metres long,

0:09:02 > 0:09:07weighs 42 tonnes, and like other RNLI all-weather lifeboats

0:09:07 > 0:09:10it can self right if it capsizes.

0:09:16 > 0:09:1912- and 13-year-olds have never been allowed on board

0:09:19 > 0:09:21Campbeltown's all-weather lifeboat before,

0:09:21 > 0:09:25and this lot are about to handle some serious equipment.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28OK, prepare to launch the Y boat.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31For tomorrow's rescue, the cadets must be able to carry out

0:09:31 > 0:09:36a tricky manoeuvre at sea, launching and retrieving the Y boat,

0:09:36 > 0:09:38a tiny inflatable stored on board.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43We're getting ready to do the first launch of the Y boat.

0:09:45 > 0:09:46It's potentially dangerous,

0:09:46 > 0:09:50so Coxy's experienced crew will be supervising throughout.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55You've got to throw the rope up here.

0:09:55 > 0:09:56Everyone has their roles.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58- You ready?- Yeah.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02Kyra and Maria up top, passing the ropes to Sam and Josh below.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Lily is operating the crane.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11Lower! Lily, Lower!

0:10:11 > 0:10:15The only way they're going to do this is if they work together.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19OK, Lily, you're doing really well. Just lower it down slowly.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Much like the inshore boat, it can get right in to shallow water

0:10:25 > 0:10:28where the all-weather boat would run aground -

0:10:28 > 0:10:31that's anything less than two metres deep.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34You guys are doing really well. Well done.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Good work. But what goes down must come up again.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41OK. Let's see if we can do as well bringing it back in, OK?

0:10:43 > 0:10:45An all-weather lifeboat rescue's not over

0:10:45 > 0:10:49until all equipment is safely back on board.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51The cadets will need to remember this tomorrow.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55You're doing really well, Sam. You're doing really well, Lily.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Kyra's naturally starting to take charge.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03- Kyra, pull the rope towards you. Kyra, pull the rope.- I am, Josh!

0:11:05 > 0:11:08But she's got competition from another cadet.

0:11:12 > 0:11:1512-year-old Josh likes to be the centre of attention.

0:11:15 > 0:11:22I think I'd describe myself as funny, outgoing but bossy.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26And when he wants something, he can be very persuasive.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28When I don't get my own way I get really grumpy,

0:11:28 > 0:11:32and when someone looks like they want to change their mind,

0:11:32 > 0:11:33I bug them...a lot.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36# In fact, don't take it seriously We're only buggin'. #

0:11:36 > 0:11:40- Are you ready? Yeah! - Just throw it!- I am!

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Looks like today it's KYRA he's bugging.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Kyra, you need to pull that quickly, OK?

0:11:45 > 0:11:47It's not me that needs pulling, Josh.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Now pull it towards you and get ready to throw it, OK?

0:11:49 > 0:11:50- Josh!- That's all I'm saying.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- Don't need you to say that. - Don't listen to anybody down there.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56He doesn't know what he's talking about.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59He doesn't know how stressful it is to catch and throw a rope.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05They've got the Y boat back in one piece,

0:12:05 > 0:12:08but it was by no means a smooth operation.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Bring it down slowly, Lily. You're doing really well.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14In tomorrow's rescue there can be only one leader

0:12:14 > 0:12:18and the others must follow, working together as a team.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Thanks for shouting, telling me to throw a rope, Josh.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23I know how to throw a rope.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31And as the cadets drive this £2.5 million lifeboat back

0:12:31 > 0:12:33to shore, it's clear that's not the only thing

0:12:33 > 0:12:35they need to learn to take control of.

0:12:40 > 0:12:41Josh is a bit bossy.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43He was telling me what to do when I knew I had it under control.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45I was listening to my instructor.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49So, I think sometimes he needs to just like think before he says stuff.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55I think we should have a big serious talk about teamwork

0:12:55 > 0:12:59before our next rescue because it's a major issue in our group.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05Team tantrums aside, it's been an exhausting

0:13:05 > 0:13:07and exhilarating day of training.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11And as Lily drenches our filming boat,

0:13:11 > 0:13:13it's as good a time as any to call it a day

0:13:13 > 0:13:15and start choosing a squad leader.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23Coxy and I have a tough choice to make.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26These plucky 12- and 13-year-olds have shown they can handle

0:13:26 > 0:13:28Campbeltown's lifeboats...

0:13:29 > 0:13:31from the smallest...

0:13:31 > 0:13:33to the biggest.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36But who's proved they can lead the others

0:13:36 > 0:13:39in a tough Hero Squad rescue tomorrow?

0:13:39 > 0:13:42The time's come for me to announce who's going to be Squad leader.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44The first one - Kyra.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47Kyra, you did very well today.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49We thought she was a nice strong driver, didn't we?

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Yeah, very confident. It was good.

0:13:51 > 0:13:56You also seemed to take control of the 42 tonner very well.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01The next cadet we think did very well today - Maria.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03You were up there, throwing those ropes,

0:14:03 > 0:14:08- catching those ropes, both of which you did very well.- Thank you.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13Sam, you were another cadet we thought did extremely well today.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16When you were given an instruction out on the rough sea

0:14:16 > 0:14:19you were taking that instruction on board.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21But tomorrow there's a tough challenge

0:14:21 > 0:14:26and we think, on everything we've seen today, the person that

0:14:26 > 0:14:29should lead the other five cadets for tomorrow's really tough

0:14:29 > 0:14:30challenge is going to be...

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Kyra.

0:14:36 > 0:14:37APPLAUSE

0:14:42 > 0:14:45'I feel really good about being Squad Leader.'

0:14:45 > 0:14:47I had no clue that I was going to get it

0:14:47 > 0:14:50cos I thought Myles would have got it cos he did really well.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52But I'm really excited that I got it.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55After a tough day of training, the transformation from cadets to

0:14:55 > 0:14:59RNLI lifeboat crew is almost complete.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04You don't have to be in extreme locations to be

0:15:04 > 0:15:06part of the Hero Squad.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Head to the CBBC games page now to find out more.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15The next morning the cadets are on call.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17Every one of Coxy's lifeboat crew are volunteers,

0:15:17 > 0:15:21with jobs from builders to surveyors,

0:15:21 > 0:15:24but if their pages go off, they must drop everything to get to the

0:15:24 > 0:15:25lifeboat station.

0:15:31 > 0:15:32Morning.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Morning. What's that?

0:15:34 > 0:15:36What's this?

0:15:36 > 0:15:40These are your pagers.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43Anyone here in the RNLI up in Campbeltown are volunteers

0:15:43 > 0:15:46and when these go off they have to respond,

0:15:46 > 0:15:48no matter what their normal day jobs are.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Page me up!

0:15:50 > 0:15:53LAUGHTER

0:15:53 > 0:15:56They've each got emergency pagers, but if they're going to be

0:15:56 > 0:16:02real RNLI volunteers they're still missing one thing - a day job.

0:16:05 > 0:16:10Luckily their hotel manager is looking for staff - cleaning staff.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Eugh! It's not even flushed!

0:16:12 > 0:16:15HE SINGS TO HIMSELF

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Well, I've just heard there's another room that needs

0:16:18 > 0:16:20- doing, number 22.- That's my room.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24Eugh!

0:16:24 > 0:16:25This is my room.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27It's like a stink bomb!

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- It's like a what, Maria? - It's like a stink bomb.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35What's that down there, Josh? Dirty old sock on the floor.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39I ain't picking up his underwear. That's something I'm not doing.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42ALL LAUGH

0:16:44 > 0:16:46I lost that one last night.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39transforming themselves into an RNLI Lifeboat crew.

0:26:28 > 0:26:32You were on the comms and some good information was coming through.

0:26:32 > 0:26:37The last cadet we think just did that little bit more was Sam.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39There were certain times on that boat

0:26:39 > 0:26:41when you were the only one that was still there,

0:26:41 > 0:26:43doing things like getting the Y boat back up.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48So, the Hero of the Day that we've decided is...

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Kyra and...

0:26:56 > 0:26:57Sam.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00APPLAUSE

0:27:03 > 0:27:06In this rescue there were two deserving heroes.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08It feels really good to be Hero of the Day -

0:27:08 > 0:27:09I wasn't expecting it at all.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12This was the service I most wanted to work with

0:27:12 > 0:27:14and I'm really glad that I got Hero of the Day in it.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19Their treat is a fish and chip supper,

0:27:19 > 0:27:21while the rest get cleaning, under Coxy's command.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25Right, guys, that's terrible. Come on. I want this boat sparkling.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Next time, the Hero Squad journey comes to an end,

0:27:32 > 0:27:35as the cadets train for their final challenge...

0:27:35 > 0:27:40with not one, but three different rescue services.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43It will be the ultimate test for our courageous cadets.
