0:05:06 > 0:05:08Navigating tough terrain to get to a casualty

0:05:08 > 0:05:12as quickly as possible is a ski patroller's most vital skill.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Most of our rookie cadets have never skied before.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19But if they're going to be ski patrollers,

0:05:19 > 0:05:21they're going to have to learn.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23MUSIC: "Ice, Ice, Baby" by Vanilla Ice

0:05:23 > 0:05:27Two days ago, they were in school. Now they're on a pair of skis.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33It's a slippery start. Maria needs a hand.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Myles and Josh hold each other up.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38And Sam's going backwards.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43Bouncing.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47Flapping.

0:05:47 > 0:05:48And limbo-ing.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52If they're going to manage a tough ski rescue,

0:05:52 > 0:05:56they're going to have to do better than this.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Every time on Hero Squad, the cadets will face

0:05:58 > 0:06:02a nerve-racking challenge based on real life emergencies.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05It'll be a race against the clock to save their casualty

0:06:05 > 0:06:08and it will be the cadets alone calling all the shots.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11It really is all down to these 12 and 13-year-olds.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16In every Hero Squad mission,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19our cadets must rescue a Hero Squad casualty...

0:06:21 > 0:06:24..with just one day's training.

0:06:24 > 0:06:25SHE SCREAMS

0:06:25 > 0:06:26The pressure is on.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56JUSTINE: We have lots of different ski and snowboard injuries.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58You can have up to 25, 30 casualties in one day.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02When the time comes, we try and save lives the best we can.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07In order to be able to save lives on the slopes,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10our cadets have to prove their ability on their skis.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31Before today,

0:08:31 > 0:08:35none of our cadets have ever skied before...except Myles.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37He's certainly quick off the mark.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16My balance isn't really good.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20Come on, Maria. You know you can do it.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Maria is encouraged by her fellow Hero Squad cadets.

0:09:23 > 0:09:24You can do it.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26You're doing really well.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Good to see some teamwork already with our new recruits.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33Come on, Maria. You're nearly finished.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37Maria's determined to complete the course mistake free.

0:09:39 > 0:09:44When 13-year-old Maria sets off on a challenge, she likes to complete it.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48If you want to do something and you struggle in it,

0:09:48 > 0:09:52you have to be really determined and show that you want to do this

0:09:52 > 0:09:55and you're going to succeed in the end.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58Let's hope Maria's determination means this will be

0:09:58 > 0:09:59'a cadet clean sweep.'

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Yes! You've done brilliant.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05- Well done, Maria.- Well done, Maria.

0:10:06 > 0:10:07Well done, Maria.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12While going down the slope, you had to think about a lot.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14You had to think about control, speed

0:10:14 > 0:10:18and then turning at certain points and making sure not to fall over.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25The ski slalom test was a success for the cadets,

0:10:25 > 0:10:28but let's hope they can remember their skiing moves...

0:10:28 > 0:10:31because tomorrow they're on ski patrol.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34On these slopes, anything could happen.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Their next training session takes the cadets

0:10:44 > 0:10:46to the top of the mountain

0:10:46 > 0:10:48to show them how to use a ski patroller's

0:10:48 > 0:10:51most essential piece of kit.

0:10:54 > 0:10:55The ski sledge -

0:10:55 > 0:11:00made out of plastic and aluminium, it's lightweight, but very strong.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Last year, it towed more than 400 people to safety.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10The training is taking place 1,200 metres up

0:11:10 > 0:11:12and the temperature is below freezing.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14It's a tough test for our new cadets.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19We're going to set up a rope system here that helps us

0:11:19 > 0:11:23control the descent of the sledge down a steep slope.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25'A special knot, called a figure of eight,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28'is used to attach the rope system to the sledge.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32'It's a tricky knot to master, especially in thick ski gloves,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35'but it will be crucial for tomorrow's challenge when the

0:11:35 > 0:11:39'cadets will be working under pressure in freezing temperatures.'

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Going to split you up into two groups.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44I think to mix it up, we're going to have the girls against the boys.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46- CADETS: Yes! - So, girls, get ready. Go.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49'The mentors made it look simple,

0:11:49 > 0:11:53'but have Maria, Lily and Kyra being paying attention?'

0:11:53 > 0:11:54Not going in.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57Get that bit there. She does this bit.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00OK, clip it on, now. Maria, clip it on.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02Yeah, that's it. Pull it through.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Is this working on the figure of eight knot

0:12:04 > 0:12:06that they need on the end of the rope there.

0:12:06 > 0:12:07No, it's not quite there yet,

0:12:07 > 0:12:10but Lily's going to have another go there.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- LILY GROANS KYRA:- No.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- That's not going to go through it. - Yeah, it is.

0:12:17 > 0:12:18Done.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21'To check the rigged sledge is safe to carry a casualty,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24'I'm going to test it out on the slope.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25'Wish me luck.'

0:12:25 > 0:12:26Have a nice ride.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31So, girls, final time -

0:12:31 > 0:12:34are you confident that your knots are going to hold my weight?

0:12:34 > 0:12:35- GIRLS:- Yes!

0:12:41 > 0:12:42Their knots held me up.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47- Are you pleased with that? - Yep, very pleased.- Fantastic.

0:12:47 > 0:12:48'Next up, it's the boys -

0:12:48 > 0:12:50'Myles, Sam and Josh.'

0:12:51 > 0:12:53Go.

0:12:53 > 0:12:54'Having watched the girls,

0:12:54 > 0:12:57'Josh is first to take his gloves off to speed up the rope work.'

0:12:58 > 0:13:00Right, I'm nearly ready.

0:13:00 > 0:13:01Other way. Other way.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04That's it. Push.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10'And good communication from Josh gets the boys working as a team.'

0:13:10 > 0:13:12This is serious stuff here.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- Serious. - Concentration there from the boys.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18'Remember, Ruaridh and Justine are on the lookout for someone to

0:13:18 > 0:13:21'make squad leader at the end of today's training.'

0:13:21 > 0:13:23- Yes.- Done.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Wow. Are you in? Done? - OK.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28'The boys' knots must be able to take the weight of me

0:13:28 > 0:13:30'and the weight of the sledge.

0:13:30 > 0:13:34'That's 115 kilos, a heavy load.'

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Boys, your knots better be good.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38You're just gently releasing the rope.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42'It holds! A great success for the boys.'

0:13:44 > 0:13:45The boys done well.

0:13:45 > 0:13:46Yes!

0:13:48 > 0:13:51'Both teams have impressed their mentors with a secure rope rig,

0:13:51 > 0:13:55'but who was quickest - boys or the girls?'

0:13:55 > 0:13:56Girls, you went first.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59One minute 32 seconds.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01In these conditions, that's a very good time.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03You should be proud of yourselves.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05However, boys...

0:14:05 > 0:14:0640 seconds. Well done.

0:14:06 > 0:14:07- BOYS:- Yes!

0:14:10 > 0:14:12We've actually just beaten them.

0:14:12 > 0:14:13It was quite annoying the boys won,

0:14:13 > 0:14:15but I think we'll let them off just this once.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18Although I am a bit disappointed that we didn't win,

0:14:18 > 0:14:21but I guess now that we know what we did wrong,

0:14:21 > 0:14:24the rescue tomorrow we'll be able to do much better.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Let's hope Maria's right.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34In less than 24 hours' time, the cadets will be using a sledge

0:14:34 > 0:14:37to rescue a fallen skier with a serious injury.

0:14:39 > 0:14:40How they treat the casualty

0:14:40 > 0:14:43when they arrive on the scene could make all the difference.

0:14:46 > 0:14:51So it's back to Ski Patrol HQ to learn about a vital role -

0:14:51 > 0:14:52emergency medical technician.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56So I'm just going to lift up Lily's leg...

0:14:57 > 0:14:59..and Ruaridh's going to pop the splint underneath.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02'Justine and Ruaridh are showing the cadets how to use something

0:15:02 > 0:15:04'called a vacuum splint.'

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Feels like a massive balloon's going round my leg.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10'Sucking air out of the splint makes it hard

0:15:10 > 0:15:12'and keeps the leg as still as possible.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15'Any movement could make the injury worse.'

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Who wants to come up and feel that?

0:15:18 > 0:15:19'Josh volunteers.'

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Feel how hard that is now.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Hard? All they've done is taken the air out.
