0:00:02 > 0:00:06These wannabe heroes are working together to perform daring rescues.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19Over the toughest terrain...

0:00:21 > 0:00:22..experiencing the highs...

0:00:24 > 0:00:26..and the lows.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31There's a new emergency crew in town.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37I'm Rav Wilding and this is Hero Squad.

0:00:39 > 0:00:44Six ordinary school kids, their mission -

0:00:44 > 0:00:47to learn how to save lives.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53But do they have what it takes to become real-life heroes?

0:01:00 > 0:01:05Last time, the cadets had to find a Hero Squad casualty trapped

0:01:05 > 0:01:08- underground.- OK, I'm down.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Arguments almost caused the rescue to fall apart.

0:01:11 > 0:01:17- Lily thinks you've gone the wrong way.- Oh, ignore them.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Lily's listening skills got them back on track

0:01:20 > 0:01:22and won her Hero of the Day.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28This time, they have just two days to transform

0:01:28 > 0:01:31themselves into a bay search and rescue team.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36And take on an extraordinary Hero Squad challenge.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41A man is trapped up to his waist in quicksand

0:01:41 > 0:01:45and he needs the Hero Squad to get out before the tide comes in.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51It's something no 12 or 13-year-olds have ever done before.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56This week on Hero Squad, our six cadets are heading to the beach

0:01:56 > 0:01:59but this is no time for an ice cream or a dip in the sea.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01It may look beautiful

0:02:01 > 0:02:04but this is one of the most treacherous places in Britain.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Twice a day, the sea drains in and out leaving

0:02:07 > 0:02:11areas of quicksand which can quickly suck you in.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16The cadets have arrived at the seaside town

0:02:16 > 0:02:18of Morecambe Bay in Cumbria.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24With Morecambe Bay's 120 square miles of sandy beaches, it's a

0:02:24 > 0:02:26hotspot for holidaymakers.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31Along the coastline, the sand mixes with clay in fast-changing

0:02:31 > 0:02:35tides turning this hard beach into thick gooey quicksand.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40What makes quicksand so dangerous is that it's very hard to spot.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Who thinks they know what you're doing today? Lots of hands going up.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Go on, Kyra, what do you think you're doing?

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Mud rescue or coastguard.

0:02:51 > 0:02:58- I'll give you a clue. You may have seen one of these before.- Ohh.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03The cadets were given a rucksack packed

0:03:03 > 0:03:06full of clues about the types of rescues they'll be performing.

0:03:06 > 0:03:11- Let's see who's guessed what they'll be doing this time.- A timer.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13So I'm going to be timed to do something.

0:03:15 > 0:03:21- I'm not quite sure about that one. - A sand timer.- Correct, Maria.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25But no-one's worked out what type of rescue they'll be carrying out.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28- What's inside this?- ALL: Sand.

0:03:28 > 0:03:34Sand is in here but what you are surrounded by is not ordinary sand.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36This is quicksand.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40If you were to go in there, you could get sucked in quicker

0:03:40 > 0:03:44than it takes the sand to drain out of this timer.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47- Scary thought? - ALL: YES.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49I'll tell you just how scary it is

0:03:49 > 0:03:51there's someone I'd like you to meet.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03Hi, guys. How are you doing? ALL: Good.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04Welcome to Morecambe Bay.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07More importantly, welcome to Bay Search and Rescue. Nice to meet you.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09I'm Gary, station officer.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Gary Parsons has spent 13 years as part of one of the only

0:04:15 > 0:04:18specialist quicksand emergency services in Britain.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21They search and rescue.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24If you get stuck in quicksand here,

0:04:24 > 0:04:29you're at the mercy of the tides which rush in at 9 mph.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Twice the speed of a really quick walk

0:04:34 > 0:04:37turning this beach into deadly territory.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42Gary and his team of heroic rescue volunteers are on standby

0:04:42 > 0:04:4724 hours a day, 365 days a year to rescue people in trouble.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52He's got just one day to train up the Hero Squad

0:04:52 > 0:04:55and won't be tolerating any messing about.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00This is a really dangerous place, OK?

0:05:00 > 0:05:02When I ask you to do something, I expect you to do it

0:05:02 > 0:05:04so that nobody gets hurt.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06I think actions speak louder than words

0:05:06 > 0:05:08and I think we've got six willing

0:05:08 > 0:05:13volunteers who are about to see how easy it is to get stuck in sand.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18As their mentor, Gary will choose one cadet to lead

0:05:18 > 0:05:21the others in their Hero Squad rescue tomorrow.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24- They each have to try and impress him.- It feels like jelly.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29You'll find it gets a little bit softer and a little bit softer.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31He's sending them onto the beach so they know what it

0:05:31 > 0:05:35feels like to walk and get stuck in this treacherous sand.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37It feels like jelly.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Kyra falls.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47- I think Gary's starting to regret this.- Stop moving.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55The cadets might find it funny but getting stuck in quicksand

0:05:55 > 0:05:57is a serious matter.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00The more you try to move around, the faster you sink

0:06:00 > 0:06:03until the sand around your legs sets like concrete.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06It was really scary and I didn't want to go in at first

0:06:06 > 0:06:10because I don't like mud or anything dirty and sticky.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13When I got stuck in the sand, my feet got taken under.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16I couldn't get my feet out and I got really stuck.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18It was weird because it was like a jelly.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22Every time you pull something out, you left your other foot still

0:06:22 > 0:06:24and it sunk in.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27The cadets won't set foot on the sand again

0:06:27 > 0:06:29until they know what they're doing.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32After a clean up, it's time to start training.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40To transform themselves into a bay search and rescue team,

0:06:40 > 0:06:44the cadets will have to dig our Hero Squad casualty out of the sand

0:06:44 > 0:06:47using some monster power tools.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49This is a concrete poker.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50What this does is right at the end,

0:06:50 > 0:06:55inside, it's got this piece of metal that spins round really fast.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57- Feel it.- At almost 24kg,

0:06:57 > 0:07:01this one piece of kit weighs the same as a heavy suitcase.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06You're going to stick it in there and move it around. Go.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08The cadets have never seen anything like this before,

0:07:08 > 0:07:10let alone been allowed to handle it.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13That's a blender!

0:07:15 > 0:07:18- How was that, Lily? Was that heavy?- Yeah.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22Would it be hard to hold that kit out there?

0:07:22 > 0:07:25- It was vibrating out of your hands. - It's quite hard to control.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Lighter, but just as effective for freeing

0:07:29 > 0:07:32someone from the quicksand is the water pump.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36Is called a handbag pump cos it's the size of a decent handbag.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40THEY LAUGH

0:07:40 > 0:07:42It pumps 100 litres of water -

0:07:42 > 0:07:45that's about a bathtubful - every minute.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49The cadets will need to use the water to loosen

0:07:49 > 0:07:52the sand around the casualty's legs.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55You've all seen the kit but I want to know who's been paying attention.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58I'm going to split you down the middle. You three will be one group.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01You three will be another group.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03When Bay Search and Rescuers arrive on scene,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06they must get to grips with their equipment in seconds

0:08:06 > 0:08:09so they can complete the rescue as quickly as possible.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Gary is setting the cadets a challenge -

0:08:12 > 0:08:17to rescue this miniature casualty from a tub of DIY quicksand.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20First up, Sam, Kyra and Maria.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23As their mentor, Gary is looking for a squad leader who will

0:08:23 > 0:08:26take charge of tomorrow's Hero Squad challenge.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28So they need to impress him.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31At first, it's chaos.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37And mentor Gary is unimpressed.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40He needs cadets who can handle dangerous tools under pressure

0:08:40 > 0:08:45and is looking for absolute concentration. That's more like it.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- They're shaking around. - They've been listening.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51In no time at all, the rescue is complete.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58- Next, it's Josh, Myles and Lily's turn.- Face it to the bottom.

0:09:00 > 0:09:06- Water goes in first, then the poker. - No, you're going to kill him!

0:09:06 > 0:09:10It's taking all Lily's strength but in a real rescue,

0:09:10 > 0:09:14a casualty's life could depend on using these tools effectively.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19He's alive. He's alive!

0:09:21 > 0:09:23The training was really fun especially

0:09:23 > 0:09:25when we used that big drill-y thing cos it was vibrating

0:09:25 > 0:09:28and it felt like it was going to come out of your hand.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31To work with that in real life, in a real-life situation,

0:09:31 > 0:09:34I guess it wouldn't be as fun cos you'd have to

0:09:34 > 0:09:35think about the danger that the casualty is in.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38I think it will be really hard because we are under a lot of

0:09:38 > 0:09:40pressure and if we don't get him out quick enough,

0:09:40 > 0:09:42he could get really cold.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46The rookie cadets are starting to get an idea of what it takes

0:09:46 > 0:09:49to be part of this high-speed response team.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52In less than 24 hours, the cadets will be

0:09:52 > 0:09:55arriving on the scene of a Hero Squad quicksand emergency.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58They'll have to rescue a casualty from the sinking

0:09:58 > 0:10:01sand before he's engulfed by the rising tide.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11This is Bay Search and Rescue's secret to survival

0:10:11 > 0:10:17and it's time for our rookie rescuers to really pay attention.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19We're going to teach each of you how to drive it

0:10:19 > 0:10:21so you're going to be driving

0:10:21 > 0:10:246.5 tonnes of off-road vehicle by yourself.

0:10:24 > 0:10:25What you think about that?

0:10:25 > 0:10:28THEY LAUGH

0:10:31 > 0:10:366.5 tonnes. That's the same weight as three elephants!

0:10:36 > 0:10:38THEY CHEER

0:10:39 > 0:10:44Hang on a minute. This lot are five years off being allowed to drive.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50It's so exciting.

0:10:51 > 0:10:52This is nerve-wracking.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01The secret to survival on quicksand is to spread your weight

0:11:01 > 0:11:05evenly over the surface and this truck's enormous tracks can

0:11:05 > 0:11:08easily travel over the bay without sinking.

0:11:12 > 0:11:16Each one holds up to 18 people and last year,

0:11:16 > 0:11:18they made nearly 200 rescues.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22Next behind the wheel, Kyra.

0:11:23 > 0:11:24A little bit of throttle.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Wow. A 12-year-old driving a six tonne vehicle!

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Straighten up, Kyra.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41- You're doing great. - Whilst Josh sets off for the boys.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Followed by Myles.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49- Use the knob on the steering wheel. - It's not about speed.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51Gary and Paul are looking for the cadet

0:11:51 > 0:11:55who can control 136 horse power safely.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57That was so fun.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59And the cadet who they think can handle

0:11:59 > 0:12:02the responsibility of being squad leader.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Last but not least, it's Sam's turn at the wheel.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14Speedy Sam is no stranger to taking the controls but he's happier

0:12:14 > 0:12:16on water.

0:12:18 > 0:12:19'I really like sailing

0:12:19 > 0:12:23'because it's just the thrill of being on the water and on your own.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25'It's amazing.'

0:12:25 > 0:12:28You need quite good technique for when you're tacking the boat

0:12:28 > 0:12:30because you've got to put it behind your hand.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33You've got to be used to cold and wet.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36'You can't be seasick because it might go all wrong.'

0:12:37 > 0:12:41Will Sam's sea legs transfer to dry land?

0:12:41 > 0:12:44Today's training has really floated his boat.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47Driving the vehicle was amazing. I was actually driving it by myself.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50- I didn't have any help apart from directions.- Well done, Sam.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Thank you.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54Sam, that was great, mate.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Out of our whole group, I think Lily did the best

0:12:57 > 0:12:59because she was really focused.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01I was ecstatic.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03I was thinking of all the positive things.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05There were no negative things on my mind.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07I was absolutely buzzing.

0:13:10 > 0:13:11Because of their skill

0:13:11 > 0:13:15and concentration behind the wheel, Gary's picked out Lily and Sam

0:13:15 > 0:13:19to take on the all-important driving roles for his final challenge.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Last year, Bay Search and Rescue teams

0:13:22 > 0:13:26rescued 125 vehicles stranded in the sand

0:13:26 > 0:13:30so Gary wants to see the cadets working in teams to reverse

0:13:30 > 0:13:33the all-terrain trucks and tow a car to safety.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Just like in real rescue team,

0:13:37 > 0:13:41Kyra and Josh are on lookout duty and Maria and Myles' job

0:13:41 > 0:13:45is to guide the driver towards the car using only hand signals.

0:13:45 > 0:13:52- Josh? When I say...- Some great communication from the boys so far.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55The boys are going straight for it but the girls are having trouble.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Lily's got to reposition before she can head back.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01A little bit more!

0:14:01 > 0:14:03Myles hooks on the towbar

0:14:03 > 0:14:06and the boys are heading for the finish line.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12That's it. Stop, stop.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17- Yes!- Well done, Josh. Well done, Sam.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21Thanks to Maria's quick work with the tow rope,

0:14:21 > 0:14:23the girls are underway again.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27Good concentration from netball-loving Lily.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Netball captain Lily is in no doubt about what it takes to become

0:14:34 > 0:14:36a real life hero.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38To work in emergency services, I think

0:14:38 > 0:14:41you have to be quite determined, you've got to be strong,

0:14:41 > 0:14:44mentally, and probably physically,

0:14:44 > 0:14:46and you've just got to be brave.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49I think bravery is probably the best thing.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52I think I need work on how brave I am,

0:14:52 > 0:14:57cos sometimes I can be quite scared, especially in extreme situations.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59CHEERING

0:15:03 > 0:15:07'And that was a very brave effort by Lily and all of the cadets...'

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Give her a bit of encouragement.

0:15:09 > 0:15:10Come on! Well done!

0:15:10 > 0:15:14'..who are the first kids of their age ever to do this.'

0:15:14 > 0:15:16'No wonder Gary's seriously impressed.'

0:15:16 > 0:15:18- Well done!- Thank you!

0:15:18 > 0:15:20Well done!

0:15:20 > 0:15:21Today, they really have shone.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24I'm absolutely thrilled that they've enjoyed it so much,

0:15:24 > 0:15:26and they've been so good, you know?

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Driving backwards and forwards in a six and a half tonne vehicle,

0:15:28 > 0:15:31as if it was natural. It was brilliant.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39The cadets have come through some of their toughest training yet.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42They've showcased their skills with the power tools.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48And taken control of the powerful all-terrain vehicles.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50So fun!

0:15:50 > 0:15:54Their transformation from cadets to Bay Search and Rescuers

0:15:54 > 0:15:56is almost complete.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Fancy taking part in a daring rescue at the touch of a button?

0:16:02 > 0:16:06Head to the CBBC website and play the Hero Squad game.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Gary, somehow, we've got to choose a squad leader from six

0:16:12 > 0:16:16very good and competent cadets. Anyone really stand out for you?

0:16:16 > 0:16:18They've all shone at different things.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Lily, obviously, brilliant driving.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Josh, excellent with the equipment.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28Someone who I think has grown over today's training is Maria.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Towards this way.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32She was darting from one side to the other.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34She was very good. Thumbs up.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38'Tomorrow's quicksand rescue is going to be a major test,

0:16:38 > 0:16:40'so which cadet has impressed the most?'

0:16:40 > 0:16:43The person we think should be given the chance

0:16:43 > 0:16:47to excel tomorrow and be the squad leader is...

0:16:51 > 0:16:53..Maria.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Great work from Maria to impress Gary today.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08I do think that I do deserve the role of squad leader.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13During the rescue, I think it will be really important to

0:17:13 > 0:17:17communicate with everyone in the team, so everyone knows what to do.

0:17:23 > 0:17:24It's eight o'clock in the morning.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27The tide's out and Morecambe Bay's beaches look inviting to

0:17:27 > 0:17:30holidaymakers keen to venture out onto the sand.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34The cadets are also in holiday mood.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36They have nothing to do this morning, except have fun

0:17:36 > 0:17:38at a local pitch and putt course.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40Maria, this is going to be for you.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43You are responsible for that mobile phone now.

0:17:43 > 0:17:48If that goes off, you may have to respond accordingly. Off you go.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52As squad leader, Maria's carrying a mobile phone

0:17:52 > 0:17:56like real Bay Search and Rescue volunteers and, just like them,

0:17:56 > 0:17:59she must be ready to respond at a moment's notice.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05But, in the meantime, it's all a bit hit and miss.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09Time for me to show them how it's done.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Oh! There it goes!

0:18:13 > 0:18:14Woo!

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Less than a mile away, Richard and his daughter Maddy have

0:18:21 > 0:18:24decided to take a scenic drive across the bay.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26They're enjoying the adventure of being off road,

0:18:26 > 0:18:30but have no idea where the quicksand is or how dangerous it can be.

0:18:35 > 0:18:36The car gets stuck.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43He gets out to assess the situation, when suddenly...

0:18:45 > 0:18:46..disaster!

0:18:46 > 0:18:50The more he tries to get out, the more he sinks.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55Luckily, his daughter has stayed in the car, and raises the alarm.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59The call's in and the cadets scramble.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03'First stop, Bay Search and Rescue Base to get kitted up.'

0:19:03 > 0:19:05Quickly!

0:19:06 > 0:19:10We've got a guy in a vehicle stuck out in the sand. Get your gear on.

0:19:11 > 0:19:12Just like a real rescue crew,

0:19:12 > 0:19:16the cadets are wearing waterproof boots and life jackets.

0:19:16 > 0:19:17Clock's ticking.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21Throughout today's challenge, Gary will be choosing Hero of the Day -

0:19:21 > 0:19:24the cadet who performs best under pressure.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27The cadets now know the rough location of the casualty,

0:19:27 > 0:19:30and it's a race against the tide to complete the rescue.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35Maria has put Lily and Sam behind the wheel

0:19:35 > 0:19:37of the all terrain vehicles.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42And Josh and Kyra are straight into their roles as spotters

0:19:42 > 0:19:45on the lookout for a vehicle stuck in the sand.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56You're nice on your right and you're nice and your left. Keep it steady.

0:19:57 > 0:20:0012 and 13-year-olds have never been able to do this.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Amazing!

0:20:09 > 0:20:11Time to step up a gear.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Over there!

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Travelling flat out at almost 30 miles per hour,

0:20:24 > 0:20:27the cadets are moments away from reaching the casualty.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Great work from drivers Lily and Sam.

0:20:37 > 0:20:41Now it's down to squad leader Maria to assess the situation.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44There's a vehicle stuck and my daughter's in the vehicle, as well.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49There's not one, but two casualties to deal with.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56To make sure there's no more, the cadets use an inflatable

0:20:56 > 0:21:00pathway, so they can work safely without sinking into the quicksand.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03- JOSH:- There's where it wants to be going in.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08Well, it's great to see the cadets getting the inflatable pathway up.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11You guys, do you want to get someone to go

0:21:11 > 0:21:13and make sure the daughter's all right?

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Good job Kyra's on the ball.

0:21:16 > 0:21:21Whilst Josh and Sam check on Maddy, the tide is getting closer

0:21:21 > 0:21:24and the quicksand is putting pressure on the casualty's legs.

0:21:25 > 0:21:29He's relying on the Hero Squad to get him out fast.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34If you hold one end...

0:21:34 > 0:21:36But the tools are heavy.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40It's dirty work and the cadets are wasting valuable time arguing.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Stretch out towards the casualty. Give it to Myles if you have to.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47Yeah, we need to sort out this leg first.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49With everyone shouting orders,

0:21:49 > 0:21:52it's difficult for squad leader Maria to decide what to do next.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56- I'm going to pass it over, hold the front.- It ain't stretched out.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59Yeah, cos we'd like it to come this way more.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02Maria, although squad leader, is very quiet,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05but Josh is the one you can hear giving out the words of command.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07Maria, do you want me to transport

0:22:07 > 0:22:09the casualty onto the people carrier.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12There certainly seems to be a little bit of tension.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Maria, if I do it...

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Squad leader Maria needs to take control.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Right, pull it!

0:22:24 > 0:22:25This is much better, cadets.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Maria is using the water pump to loosen

0:22:28 > 0:22:30the sand around the casualty's legs.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31She's remembered her training,

0:22:31 > 0:22:34but freeing someone from the quicksand takes the same amount of

0:22:34 > 0:22:37effort as moving a medium sized car,

0:22:37 > 0:22:41so the Hero Squad now really need to work as a team.

0:22:41 > 0:22:42Work together! Come on!

0:22:42 > 0:22:44You're nearly there!

0:22:48 > 0:22:50They've done it!

0:22:53 > 0:22:56The casualty is moved to the safety of the all-terrain vehicle,

0:22:56 > 0:23:01and Sam reunites him with his daughter.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03Makes sure she's warm, too, OK? Thank you, Kyra.

0:23:06 > 0:23:07The first stage is complete,

0:23:07 > 0:23:11but there's one more difficult task facing them.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15They need to get the Hero Squad casualty's car

0:23:15 > 0:23:17out of the dangerous quicksand.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22They're thinking back to their training yesterday.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24Josh is on lookout duty, and Myles

0:23:24 > 0:23:29and Maria are guiding with hand signals, just as they were taught.

0:23:31 > 0:23:32Stop!

0:23:32 > 0:23:36Lily's at the wheel, and everyone's relying on her as she reverses

0:23:36 > 0:23:39the truck towards the stranded vehicle.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43If Lily's scared now, she's certainly not showing it.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48Lily is reversing a six tonne truck!

0:23:49 > 0:23:51She's done it!

0:23:51 > 0:23:53- Good. You good?- Yeah. - Excellent. Well done.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56Now they can attach the tow rope

0:23:56 > 0:23:58and pull the vehicle out of the quicksand.

0:24:00 > 0:24:01OK!

0:24:03 > 0:24:07It's moving. Keep going! Follow Myles's direction.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12Keep going forward, keep going forward.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15They've done it! They've pulled the vehicle out.

0:24:15 > 0:24:20The cadets are absolutely exhausted, but they're almost there.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24Guys have left a load of gear out on the sands,

0:24:24 > 0:24:26and we're going to wait and see

0:24:26 > 0:24:28if they realise they've left half of the equipment behind.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32Which cadet will remember to pack up all the kit?

0:24:35 > 0:24:37Lily is straight over to help.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40It's teamwork that gets the kit packed up

0:24:40 > 0:24:43quickly before the tide comes in.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48- Come on, Lily, you ready to go? - Yeah.- OK, come on. Let's go.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53I've never been this dirty. It's horrible.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55But it's a job well done.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59The Hero Squad casualties have been safely

0:24:59 > 0:25:03rescued from the quicksand, and, with the help of Gary's team,

0:25:03 > 0:25:06the cadets get the car off the beach safely.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12But, for Maria, being squad leader was tougher than she expected.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14I was disappointed with Josh.

0:25:14 > 0:25:19At points, he tried to take lead of all the situations,

0:25:19 > 0:25:22which frustrated me cos I was squad leader.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24I think it was getting tense between me and Myles,

0:25:24 > 0:25:29cos we were both doing the same job and we were doing it differently.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32There were some points where he didn't listen to the others.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35I've learnt that, if there wasn't as much tension between me and

0:25:35 > 0:25:38Myles, we would have worked better as a team and got it done quicker.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42They may have not yet got to grips with teamwork,

0:25:42 > 0:25:45but the Hero Squad pulled off a an extraordinary rescue.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51Their transformation from cadets into Bay Search and Rescuers

0:25:51 > 0:25:53is complete.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Without a shadow of a doubt, these kids meet the mark.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07I want to sign them up. They're that good. Absolutely brilliant.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12Now all that's left is to choose a Hero of the Day.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18Lily, we'll start with you. We thought, some brilliant driving.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22Lily's been an absolute stormtrooper. Total control all the time.

0:26:22 > 0:26:23Really impressed.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26- You noticed some good things from Josh, as well.- Yeah.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28Josh has done really well.

0:26:28 > 0:26:32You made sure people heard what you were saying. That's good.

0:26:32 > 0:26:33Thank you.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36You did do well, Josh, but one thing I would say is, just watch it,

0:26:36 > 0:26:39and, if you do have a squad leader who is telling you what to do,

0:26:39 > 0:26:41you must take that on board.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43Maria, squad leader.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46You were absolutely brilliant. Outstanding.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49You took on board everything that we said.

0:26:49 > 0:26:55So, the person we've decided is our Hero of the Day is...

0:26:59 > 0:27:00..Lily.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09Lily has kept her cool behind the wheel,

0:27:09 > 0:27:12showed determination in training,

0:27:12 > 0:27:17and got her hands dirty during an exhausting rescue.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21It's a great all-round performance.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25I was thinking it was going to be Josh or Maria, I never

0:27:25 > 0:27:28thought in a million years that it was going to be me.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32Lily's reward for being Hero of the Day?

0:27:32 > 0:27:35She gets to take charge of the hose!

0:27:35 > 0:27:37In the cadets' next challenge,

0:27:37 > 0:27:41it's all hands to the pump as they race to a blazing oil rig.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45There's a ferocious fire to fight,

0:27:45 > 0:27:48and a trapped engineer needs rescuing from a smoke-filled room.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51That's next time on Hero Squad.
