0:00:02 > 0:00:07These wannabe heroes are working together to perform daring rescues.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18Over the toughest terrain.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Experiencing the highs...
0:00:24 > 0:00:26..and the lows.
0:00:28 > 0:00:32There's a new emergency crew in town.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I'm Rav Wilding, and this is Hero Squad.
0:00:40 > 0:00:44Six ordinary school kids.
0:00:44 > 0:00:48Their mission? To learn how to save lives.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54But do they have what it takes to become real-life heroes?
0:01:01 > 0:01:05Last time, the cadets had to rescue a Hero Squad casualty
0:01:05 > 0:01:07trapped in quicksand.
0:01:09 > 0:01:13Arguments between the cadets made it tough for their squad leader.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16We need to sort out this leg first, Myles.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19But Lily's driving skills got the cadets back on track
0:01:19 > 0:01:21- and won her Hero Of The Day. - It's freezing!
0:01:21 > 0:01:25This time we're really turning up the heat
0:01:25 > 0:01:27on our six courageous cadets.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34They have just 24 hours to become expert firefighters
0:01:34 > 0:01:38and then they will be facing a truly explosive Hero Squad challenge.
0:01:41 > 0:01:45A ferocious fire has broken out on an industrial oil refinery.
0:01:45 > 0:01:46Two engineers are trapped
0:01:46 > 0:01:51- and they are surrounded by highly flammable substances.- Help!
0:01:51 > 0:01:55The Hero Squad cadets must take control of the raging fire
0:01:55 > 0:01:56and get the two workers to safety.
0:01:59 > 0:02:03To do that, they will have to work fast, safely and as a team.
0:02:05 > 0:02:07Their base for the next 48 hours is this place -
0:02:09 > 0:02:13a specialist emergency response training centre in Gloucestershire.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15For almost half a century,
0:02:15 > 0:02:19firefighters have been coming here to learn vital life-saving skills,
0:02:19 > 0:02:22and there's a whole lot more than just flames and fire engines here.
0:02:22 > 0:02:28They've got old cars, trains and planes to practise on.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30This place even has its own mocked-up motorway -
0:02:30 > 0:02:32perfect for teaching firefighters
0:02:32 > 0:02:35how to deal with serious road accidents.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38It's an area around the size of 240 football pitches,
0:02:38 > 0:02:42dedicated to teaching people how to save lives.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47- Good morning, cadets. - ALL: Good morning.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50Welcome to Gloucestershire, and as you've probably guessed,
0:02:50 > 0:02:53you are going to be learning to train with the fire service
0:02:53 > 0:02:55over the next few days.
0:02:55 > 0:03:00You are going to become part of an elite firefighting team.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04But the first rule about being firefighter
0:03:04 > 0:03:08is to expect the unexpected.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16Good morning, cadets. My name is station manager Robertson.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18I will be your mentor.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21Former soldier Robbie Robertson has been a firefighter
0:03:21 > 0:03:23for almost 20 years.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26He has saved countless lives and has even won a bravery award
0:03:26 > 0:03:29for risking his own life trying to save others.
0:03:29 > 0:03:31Being a firefighter means everything to me.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33Every day is a new challenge.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36I get to go home happy, knowing I've helped other people.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39Robbie has also trained thousands of other firefighters
0:03:39 > 0:03:43from all over the world, but this is going to be the first time
0:03:43 > 0:03:46he has ever put a group of 12- and 13-year-olds through their paces.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49To be effective firefighters, cadets need to be courageous,
0:03:49 > 0:03:51they need to work as a team.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54It won't be easy, but if they listen to me, I'll get them through this.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01Before they set off on their Hero Squad adventure,
0:04:01 > 0:04:04- every cadet was given a rucksack. - What's inside here?
0:04:04 > 0:04:08Each one contains a collection of cunning clues
0:04:08 > 0:04:09designed to help the cadet guess
0:04:09 > 0:04:12what kind of rescues they might be performing.
0:04:12 > 0:04:14Am I going on a boat trip?
0:04:14 > 0:04:16Not this time, Josh.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19In fact, it's Sam that's holding the key to today's rescue.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21That's heavy!
0:04:21 > 0:04:23In your squad rucksacks, you should have found one of these.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26- Who can tell me what this is? - A fire extinguisher.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28We need to know how to use this properly.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31The first thing you're going to learn is different types of fire
0:04:31 > 0:04:33and how you are going to put them out.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39Our cadets have got less than 48 hours
0:04:39 > 0:04:41to become fully fledged firefighters,
0:04:41 > 0:04:44so it's straight into the classroom where mentor Robbie
0:04:44 > 0:04:48has prepared a very special science lesson.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50Put your safety glasses on, please?
0:04:50 > 0:04:53This morning we are going to learn about fire.
0:04:53 > 0:04:59First of all, Sam and Maria find out how easily different materials burn.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02See how it glistens and there is a sparkle?
0:05:02 > 0:05:04And then Josh and Lily learn which liquids are used
0:05:04 > 0:05:06to put out different kinds fire.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11For example, you can't put out a petrol fire with water,
0:05:11 > 0:05:15so foam is used to smother the flames instead.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18That's something that could be well worth remembering
0:05:18 > 0:05:20for tomorrow's rescue.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23And it's not just flames that firefighters need to be aware of.
0:05:23 > 0:05:27Invisible gases such as carbon monoxide can be deadly.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30You wouldn't want to breathe that in.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32Now, it might look a bit like a chemistry lessons in school,
0:05:32 > 0:05:36but if they get it wrong, there's a lot more than detention at stake.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38The skills they are learning now
0:05:38 > 0:05:42could really keep them out of danger in tomorrow's challenge.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46And now the cadets are about to learn one of the most
0:05:46 > 0:05:48important lessons of all -
0:05:48 > 0:05:52that a small amount of gas can lead to a pretty big explosion.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55- This is scary! - LOUD WHOOSH
0:05:55 > 0:05:57CADETS GASP
0:05:57 > 0:06:00The cadets clearly weren't expecting that.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04- See how real this is now? - BOTH: Yeah.
0:06:06 > 0:06:10That has got to be one of the best chemistry lessons I've ever had.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13That was epic!
0:06:13 > 0:06:16Even though it gave me a massive fright, it was still so much fun.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18I think that lesson was really important,
0:06:18 > 0:06:20cos when you are going out to a house fire,
0:06:20 > 0:06:22you have to understand the chemistry of it,
0:06:22 > 0:06:26or you could cause an even bigger accident and hurt even more people.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34The cadets have learned the theory, and it's now time to kit up.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Firefighters wear protective suits
0:06:38 > 0:06:42that can withstand temperatures of up to 800 degrees Celsius -
0:06:42 > 0:06:46that's over three times hotter than the oven in your kitchen.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49Now you're Fireman Sam, Sam!
0:06:49 > 0:06:51Looking good, guys.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53As well as wearing protective suits,
0:06:53 > 0:06:56the cadets need to put on specialist breathing apparatus,
0:06:56 > 0:06:58or BA for short.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01These tanks are full of compressed air
0:07:01 > 0:07:04and allow firefighters to breathe when they are in smoke-filled rooms.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06Each set weighs 15 kilograms -
0:07:06 > 0:07:10that's the weight of two of these bowling balls strapped to your back.
0:07:10 > 0:07:13They are heavy and they are uncomfortable,
0:07:13 > 0:07:17but that doesn't seem to be bothering the cadets.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19- OK. Take a deep breath.- Hello. Can you hear me?
0:07:19 > 0:07:21I can hear you.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23Everything seems to be going well...
0:07:26 > 0:07:28..when suddenly Josh seems to be in a spot of bother.
0:07:28 > 0:07:32- Put it back on again. - Oh, no. That's scaring me.
0:07:32 > 0:07:35- Are you all right, Josh? - OK. Get it off.- That's all right.
0:07:35 > 0:07:37He didn't put his mask on correctly...
0:07:38 > 0:07:42..and when the air rushed in around his face, he panicked.
0:07:46 > 0:07:50Football fanatic Josh loves open spaces and being outdoors,
0:07:50 > 0:07:52so it's understandable that he's not keen
0:07:52 > 0:07:54on wearing a tight-fitting facemask.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57When I'm in small spaces, I feel like I'm going to suffocate
0:07:57 > 0:07:59and not be able to breathe.
0:08:02 > 0:08:04It's all a bit too much for Josh,
0:08:04 > 0:08:07so he goes outside for a bit of fresh air.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09The plan is I'm going to take a couple of minutes
0:08:09 > 0:08:11and then I'm going to go back in.
0:08:11 > 0:08:14OK, mate. Join the others.
0:08:15 > 0:08:19Everyone all right? Give me a thumbs up if you are. It's heavy, I know.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23It's uncomfortable, but it's part of the training and part
0:08:23 > 0:08:27of what these guys have to wear when they're doing this job for real.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29Another vital part of firefighter training is
0:08:29 > 0:08:34finding your way around a building using just your hands and feet.
0:08:34 > 0:08:38It might look a bit funny, but when it's done in a dark and smoky room,
0:08:38 > 0:08:41the "BA shuffle" becomes a life-saving technique,
0:08:41 > 0:08:45and it's time for the cadets to give it a go themselves.
0:08:47 > 0:08:49Kyra certainly seems to have got the hang of it,
0:08:49 > 0:08:53and Lily is really busting some moves.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56In fact, all of the cadets seem to have mastered it,
0:08:56 > 0:08:59so it's time to raise the stakes.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03The cadets may be a dab hand at the BA shuffle in a big open room,
0:09:03 > 0:09:07but I've been preparing something a bit more challenging -
0:09:07 > 0:09:11a room full of furniture. Oh, and the lights are going to be out, too.
0:09:19 > 0:09:23Film fanatic Lily is happy enough to sit in a dimly-lit cinema
0:09:23 > 0:09:25munching popcorn with her pals,
0:09:25 > 0:09:28but it's a different story when the lights go out completely.
0:09:28 > 0:09:32I think the toughest thing I'll probably face is rescuing someone
0:09:32 > 0:09:35in the dark, because you can hardly see,
0:09:35 > 0:09:39and I would hate to get trapped somewhere that's dark and cold.
0:09:39 > 0:09:44It's crucial that Lily and the other cadets perform well in this task.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46Today is just a practice, but tomorrow,
0:09:46 > 0:09:48they will be doing this for real.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53In the next hectic Hero Squad rescue,
0:09:53 > 0:09:54they'll need to enter a smoke-filled room
0:09:54 > 0:09:57at a local oil refinery.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00An electrical fault has sent the whole place up in flames,
0:10:00 > 0:10:03- and an engineer is trapped inside. - Help!
0:10:04 > 0:10:08It's going to be a job for our firefighting heroes to get her out.
0:10:11 > 0:10:15Cadets. Well done with the first part of your training.
0:10:15 > 0:10:19Really good so far. However, things are about to get a lot tougher.
0:10:20 > 0:10:23The cadets will need maximum concentration in here.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26There are lots of tricky obstacles to get in their way,
0:10:26 > 0:10:30and they might be completely in the dark but we will be able
0:10:30 > 0:10:32to watch every move they make
0:10:32 > 0:10:35thanks to some high-tech night vision cameras.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38For poor old Lily,, there's a nervous wait ahead
0:10:38 > 0:10:41because first up, it's Kyra, Josh and Maria.
0:10:44 > 0:10:46It's so dark!
0:10:46 > 0:10:48It's a strong start from the first team.
0:10:48 > 0:10:53Josh certainly seems to have put his earlier worries behind him.
0:10:53 > 0:10:55- Josh?- Josh, around here.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59- Josh, where are you? - I'm up here, on the wall.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02Slowly but surely, the cadets use the BA shuffle
0:11:02 > 0:11:05to navigate their way through the room.
0:11:05 > 0:11:07- CROCKERY RATTLES - Be careful.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13- And Kyra thinks she's found the casualty.- I've got him!
0:11:13 > 0:11:16Not quite, Kyra.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19What you are trying to rescue there is actually an old sofa.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23So it's back to the BA shuffle, when, completely out of the blue,
0:11:23 > 0:11:26Josh starts to panic.
0:11:26 > 0:11:30I'm a Hero Squad cadet, get me out of here!
0:11:31 > 0:11:33- Josh! Are you sure?- No, no. Let me get out. I'm sure.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36- OK, lights on.- He wants to come out.
0:11:38 > 0:11:42- This is a real shock for everybody. - You OK, darling?
0:11:42 > 0:11:44What we just heard there, obviously we could hear Josh.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46He got a bit concerned and said, "I want to get out."
0:11:46 > 0:11:49We've taken him out for his own safety, just to calm him down.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52It's true. It is very, very difficult.
0:11:52 > 0:11:53You can't see anything
0:11:53 > 0:11:56and it's very hard for you, let alone a 12-year-old.
0:11:56 > 0:11:57Definitely.
0:11:57 > 0:11:59Even putting the mask on can be claustrophobic.
0:11:59 > 0:12:01We get a lot of people who want to be firefighters,
0:12:01 > 0:12:03and it's maybe been a dream all their life,
0:12:03 > 0:12:04and they get the chance to do that,
0:12:04 > 0:12:06and the first time they do it,
0:12:06 > 0:12:07it freaks them, and they leave the job.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10With the Hero Squad rescue just found the corner,
0:12:10 > 0:12:13this could be a major setback for Josh.
0:12:13 > 0:12:18- Next up, it's the turn of Myles, Lily and Sam.- In you go. Good luck.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23Remember, Lily is no fan of the dark.
0:12:24 > 0:12:28The fact that she's even entering this room shows real courage.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32- Where are you?- I'm here. I'm in front.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35Remember, it's absolutely pitch black in here.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37We need to move faster.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40The second team are racing towards the casualty,
0:12:40 > 0:12:43but it's not just a speed that's impressing Robbie.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46There is good communication going on, and they are making good progress.
0:12:46 > 0:12:48They seem calm so far, which is good.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54- I've found a person.- Have you? - Yeah. Here.- OK, great.
0:12:55 > 0:12:59In fact, they're doing so well, they've got the dummy
0:12:59 > 0:13:01and they are already making for the door.
0:13:01 > 0:13:08Great communication, brilliant teamwork and one rescued casualty.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13- Well done, you three. How was that?- Hard.- Good.
0:13:13 > 0:13:17You've got the casualty. Off you go and well done.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20I'm so glad to be out of there, because it was dark,
0:13:20 > 0:13:22and it was, like, you couldn't see anything at all
0:13:22 > 0:13:25- and you were relying on what you could feel.- Where are you?
0:13:25 > 0:13:27Here. I'm in front.
0:13:27 > 0:13:29Just the atmosphere in there was horrible.
0:13:32 > 0:13:36The cadets have now learned how to rescue the casualty from a dark
0:13:36 > 0:13:39and potentially smoke-filled building,
0:13:39 > 0:13:41but before any firefighter enters a room,
0:13:41 > 0:13:44they have to make sure it's as safe as possible, and that often means
0:13:44 > 0:13:49putting out a fire and that is where these beauties come into their own.
0:13:51 > 0:13:55A modern fire engine will hold almost 2,000 litres of water.
0:13:55 > 0:14:00That's enough to fill 25 family-sized bathtubs
0:14:00 > 0:14:03and will keep firefighters busy for up to 20 minutes.
0:14:04 > 0:14:08And to get the water off the appliance and onto a fire,
0:14:08 > 0:14:11each engine carries over 250 metres of hose.
0:14:11 > 0:14:14These appliances carry everything the cadets need
0:14:14 > 0:14:19to fight a ferocious fire. Now they just need to learn how to do it.
0:14:19 > 0:14:21The first job is to roll out the hoses.
0:14:23 > 0:14:25Get to work.
0:14:25 > 0:14:28But it isn't as easy as you might think.
0:14:28 > 0:14:32Each of these hoses weighs as much as 15 bags of sugar,
0:14:32 > 0:14:34but the cadets are making light work of them.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37Keep going. Keep going.
0:14:42 > 0:14:46Next, the nozzles - or branches - are attached.
0:14:46 > 0:14:51Then it's time for the important bit. Hold on tight, cadets.
0:14:51 > 0:14:56The water pressure from those hoses could easily knock a person over.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58Three, two, one, move.
0:14:59 > 0:15:02Three, two, one, move.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05In no time at all, they have mastered the art of hose handling
0:15:05 > 0:15:12and, what's more, they look like they're really enjoying themselves.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15- Three, two, one, move. - Then, suddenly, disaster strikes.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21Kyra has injured her wrist and is in a lot of pain.
0:15:23 > 0:15:26I was pulling on the hose, and it felt like my wrist clicked
0:15:26 > 0:15:28and now it really hurts when I move it.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31If the injury is serious,
0:15:31 > 0:15:34this could be the end of Kyra's Hero Squad journey.
0:15:36 > 0:15:37Fearing the worst,
0:15:37 > 0:15:40she is taken to a nearby hospital to have it checked out.
0:15:40 > 0:15:45It's an abrupt and emotional ending to a busy day.
0:15:45 > 0:15:47And a stark reminder of the dangers
0:15:47 > 0:15:50of working for the emergency services.
0:15:50 > 0:15:52The other cadets are clearly shocked
0:15:52 > 0:15:56and can only hope that Kyra will be fit enough to rejoin them soon.
0:16:01 > 0:16:03The cadets' training is now over.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05They've had a blast in the classroom...
0:16:07 > 0:16:10..and successfully navigated their way through the BA shuffle.
0:16:10 > 0:16:14- There were times when the going got tough...- I want to get out.
0:16:14 > 0:16:19..but when the pressure was on, they pulled together
0:16:19 > 0:16:21and worked well in their teams.
0:16:21 > 0:16:25And they will need to put all their new skills into practice tomorrow,
0:16:25 > 0:16:29because I've got an explosive Hero Squad rescue lined up for them.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33The transformation from cadets to firefighters is almost complete.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40You don't have to be in extreme locations
0:16:40 > 0:16:42to be part of the Hero Squad.
0:16:42 > 0:16:46Head to the CBBC games page now to find out more.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53First, mentor Robbie and I need to choose a squad leader.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56They have all been good today. They have all worked really hard.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58I would say there are probably three that have stood out
0:16:58 > 0:17:02more than others, and that would be Maria, Myles and Lily.
0:17:02 > 0:17:05Maria coped brilliantly with the heavy BA kit.
0:17:05 > 0:17:10When it came to working with hoses, it was Myles who really stood out.
0:17:10 > 0:17:12And last but not least was Lily.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14Despite being afraid of the dark,
0:17:14 > 0:17:18she performed fantastically well in the pitch black room.
0:17:18 > 0:17:21- I've found a person. - Have you?- Yeah.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23With three strong cadets to choose from,
0:17:23 > 0:17:26it's an incredibly tough call to make,
0:17:26 > 0:17:28but Robbie and I have come to a decision.
0:17:33 > 0:17:35OK, cadets. Well done for today.
0:17:35 > 0:17:37You've had a lot of information to take on board,
0:17:37 > 0:17:39and I think you have all done very, very well.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41We think the person who should be awarded this
0:17:41 > 0:17:43for tomorrow's challenge is...
0:17:45 > 0:17:47- ..Lily. - THEY CLAP
0:17:52 > 0:17:54When Rav announced me squad leader, I was very surprised.
0:17:54 > 0:17:57I never thought in a million years that I would be able to do it,
0:17:57 > 0:18:00but I'm really excited for the challenge that lies ahead.
0:18:00 > 0:18:02Well done, all of you.
0:18:02 > 0:18:06Going to have to keep calm, going to have to make decisions.
0:18:06 > 0:18:10If they get those decisions wrong, we could have a disaster on our hands.
0:18:10 > 0:18:12If they get the decisions right, everything will go to plan.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20Early the next morning,
0:18:20 > 0:18:23and the Hero Squad cadets are on station and raring to go.
0:18:23 > 0:18:26And the good news is that Kyra has been given the all-clear
0:18:26 > 0:18:28and has rejoined the team.
0:18:28 > 0:18:31- How is your hand feeling? - Fat and swollen.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33Is it still hurting?
0:18:33 > 0:18:37It's better when it's in the splint, but it still hurts my finger.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40The junior firefighters are now on stand-by,
0:18:40 > 0:18:43waiting for an emergency call to come in.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46Right now, their biggest dilemma is what to have for breakfast,
0:18:46 > 0:18:49but very soon, every decision they make
0:18:49 > 0:18:51could have life-changing consequences.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56A few miles away at the Hero Squad oil refinery,
0:18:56 > 0:18:58an engineer is finishing his shift
0:18:58 > 0:19:00when he sees smoke pouring from a locked door.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03- BANGING - Help! Help!
0:19:05 > 0:19:08A colleague is trapped inside,
0:19:08 > 0:19:12so he heads off to get help when suddenly,
0:19:12 > 0:19:15the whole building goes up in flames.
0:19:15 > 0:19:19The alarm is triggered, and the call goes out at the fire station.
0:19:19 > 0:19:21OK, guys. We've got a fire. Come on, let's go.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24- ALARM SOUNDS - In a situation like this,
0:19:24 > 0:19:27a fire crew needs to be on the road in a matter of minutes.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Life is at risk here, so every second counts.
0:19:34 > 0:19:37The cadets are just moments away from the fire,
0:19:37 > 0:19:39but they still don't know what to expect.
0:19:39 > 0:19:44- When suddenly, Kyra spots the flames in the distance.- Wow!
0:19:44 > 0:19:48- That is big!- That is big flames.
0:19:48 > 0:19:50Serious big flames.
0:19:52 > 0:19:56As soon as the fire engine stops, the cadets spring into action.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59Hoses are unrolled, and BA kits are put on.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04The cadets learned these skills less than 24 hours ago,
0:20:04 > 0:20:07but right now, they look like they have been firefighters for years.
0:20:09 > 0:20:11Their Hero Squad training has really paid off.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15Come on, guys. Let's get a move on.
0:20:15 > 0:20:19And just minutes after arriving, they are ready to tackle the flames.
0:20:21 > 0:20:24- Got it.- Do you want it on? - Yeah.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26Our three cadets on the hose.
0:20:26 > 0:20:28They are just about to release the water and it's on.
0:20:28 > 0:20:31They are attacking the flames. This is brilliant.
0:20:33 > 0:20:35Visors down.
0:20:43 > 0:20:45INDISTINCT SPEECH
0:20:45 > 0:20:47Turn it off.
0:20:49 > 0:20:51The fire is out,
0:20:51 > 0:20:53but now the team with the breathing apparatus has to go up there.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55You can see smoke coming out of the building.
0:20:55 > 0:20:59- They've got to go up and get the informant away.- Can you hear me?
0:21:01 > 0:21:04- Are you OK?- I'm OK. Somebody's trapped.
0:21:05 > 0:21:08Somebody is trapped at the back of the building.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12Thanks to Josh, just speaking to the informant,
0:21:12 > 0:21:14he has just found out that someone is trapped in the building.
0:21:14 > 0:21:17He's now telling the others.
0:21:17 > 0:21:21BAs, someone is trapped at the back of the building. You need to get in.
0:21:24 > 0:21:25The flames may be out,
0:21:25 > 0:21:29but the building could still be dark and smoky.
0:21:29 > 0:21:31This is a scary situation.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34Remember all of your training, OK?
0:21:34 > 0:21:37Safety first. All right? OK.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41Three very nervous but very brave cadets.
0:21:48 > 0:21:51The engineer's breathing in potentially toxic fumes.
0:21:51 > 0:21:54This is a really dangerous situation,
0:21:54 > 0:21:56and the cadets need to act fast.
0:21:58 > 0:22:01It's a strong performance from squad leader Lily.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04- She's really taking control. - Hammer, please?
0:22:05 > 0:22:08Give it a good whack there, Sam.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14Pull it. Sam, can you get it?
0:22:16 > 0:22:17The door's open,
0:22:17 > 0:22:21and it's a brave Maria who leads the team into the unknown.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24- Help! - Can you hear me?
0:22:27 > 0:22:29And on the outside of the oil refinery,
0:22:29 > 0:22:32things have just got very scary.
0:22:32 > 0:22:35The fire wasn't out. They thought it was, and it's just kicked off again.
0:22:35 > 0:22:38Lily, Sam and Maria have remembered the BA shuffle
0:22:38 > 0:22:42and are now actually performing it inside a burning building.
0:22:42 > 0:22:46Let's hope their firefighting friends can put the flames out
0:22:46 > 0:22:49so they can escape to safety.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52- HEAVY BREATHING - We will get you out.
0:22:52 > 0:22:56Regardless of the danger, the BA team remain incredibly focused.
0:22:56 > 0:22:58We have found the casualty. Over.
0:23:00 > 0:23:04This is an amazing display of bravery and determination.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07The rescue is over.
0:23:09 > 0:23:12The Hero Squad casualty is safe,
0:23:12 > 0:23:16- but Josh isn't taking anything for granted.- Can you hear me?
0:23:16 > 0:23:18- Yeah.- Is there any other casualties inside the building?
0:23:18 > 0:23:22- No, just me.- Right. You're going to be OK.- Thank you.
0:23:24 > 0:23:27The casualty is on her way to hospital, and at last,
0:23:27 > 0:23:29the cadets can relax.
0:23:29 > 0:23:32- Well done, Sam. - Good effort there, mate.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34Well done, Sam.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40But suddenly, the heat from the first fire
0:23:40 > 0:23:42ignites a tray full of diesel.
0:23:42 > 0:23:44The cadets need to put their helmets on again
0:23:44 > 0:23:46and get straight back to work.
0:23:48 > 0:23:51They are now dealing with a liquid fuel fire,
0:23:51 > 0:23:55but will they remember what they were taught in the chemistry lab?
0:23:56 > 0:23:59That's smoke. It's liquid. We need foam.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02Nice one, Josh.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05Pouring water onto a fire like this will only make things worse.
0:24:05 > 0:24:09- Foam is definitely the way to go. - We are going up the stairs.
0:24:09 > 0:24:11We are going up the stairs.
0:24:11 > 0:24:13Visors down, everybody.
0:24:14 > 0:24:18Lily, Josh, Sam and Kyra head towards the blazing diesel pan.
0:24:20 > 0:24:23Don't get too close, in case it spreads.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26And Myles and Maria stay with the pump.
0:24:26 > 0:24:30It's going to take a steady flow of water to create enough foam
0:24:30 > 0:24:32to put those flames out.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36- Are you ready for the water? - Stand by!
0:24:40 > 0:24:42This is incredible.
0:24:43 > 0:24:46A team of 12- and 13-year-olds are tackling a raging fire.
0:24:50 > 0:24:54And thanks to the foam, they make short work of the flames.
0:24:54 > 0:24:58Hero Squad cadets - 1, diesel fire - 0.
0:24:58 > 0:25:00Turn off!
0:25:00 > 0:25:04They've done it.
0:25:04 > 0:25:08All the fires are out, and everybody is safe. Nice work, cadets.
0:25:09 > 0:25:13- We did really well. Everyone participated.- Best rescue so far.
0:25:16 > 0:25:20In less than 48 hours, the Hero Squad cadets have transformed
0:25:20 > 0:25:24themselves from rookie rescuers into fully fledged firefighters.
0:25:29 > 0:25:31Cadets, well done.
0:25:31 > 0:25:33Well done, that was a tough challenge,
0:25:33 > 0:25:36and I think all of you did extremely well.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38And not only did you get up there against the fire and the smoke,
0:25:38 > 0:25:41you tackled the blaze, you rescued not one but two casualties,
0:25:41 > 0:25:45so you should all be very proud of yourselves.
0:25:45 > 0:25:48The time has come for Robbie and myself to choose Hero Of The Day,
0:25:48 > 0:25:51and this has been a very tough decision.
0:25:54 > 0:25:57Three cadets really caught our eye in today's rescue.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00Maria has impressed from the start.
0:26:00 > 0:26:04She coped brilliantly when it came to wearing the heavy BA kit
0:26:04 > 0:26:07and didn't hesitate when entering the dark, smoky oil refinery.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10Myles also worked well.
0:26:10 > 0:26:12Where others were quick to attack the fire,
0:26:12 > 0:26:15he understood the importance of the less glamorous roles
0:26:15 > 0:26:19and worked hard to keep the water flowing. And finally, Josh.
0:26:19 > 0:26:23After a shaky start, he came back in a blaze of glory.
0:26:23 > 0:26:26He communicated well, he remembered his training
0:26:26 > 0:26:28and he remained focused throughout.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31But we can only choose one person.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35The Hero Of The Day that we have decided is...
0:26:38 > 0:26:41- It's you, Josh. Josh, well done. - THEY CLAP
0:26:45 > 0:26:48I'm feeling really good, cos I just got Hero Of The Day.
0:26:48 > 0:26:51And Josh's reward is to boss the other cadets around
0:26:51 > 0:26:55as they tidy up hundreds of metres of heavy hose.
0:26:55 > 0:26:59- Faster!- You try doing this sometime!
0:26:59 > 0:27:01I think firefighters do an amazing job,
0:27:01 > 0:27:05because they save people's lives, doing what they do.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08This experience has just been awesome.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10I loved doing this fire rescue. Yeah!
0:27:14 > 0:27:15Next time on Hero Squad...
0:27:15 > 0:27:17The sky is the limit for the six cadets
0:27:17 > 0:27:21when they team up with London's air ambulance.
0:27:21 > 0:27:24A badly injured builder needs urgent medical attention,
0:27:24 > 0:27:31and it's down to our high-flying helicopter heroes to help him out.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33No slacking!
0:27:39 > 0:27:41Get back to work!
0:27:46 > 0:27:48No slacking!
0:27:48 > 0:27:49Ah!
