0:04:26 > 0:04:29Hi. Good morning, guys. This is our helicopter.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33We usually travel at 150 miles an hour when we're going to a job.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35ALL GASP

0:04:35 > 0:04:39Because we're going in a straight line we can get to most places much quicker than a car.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42In fact, we can get to most places within the M25 within about 13 minutes.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46- Wow.- Where would you land when you had to go to a rescue?

0:04:46 > 0:04:48I would just pick the nearest suitable space,

0:04:48 > 0:04:52ideally as close to the patient as possible, and then we'll land there.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56But there's no predefined places, we will just go and find the best place at the time.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59- Might be the road.- Yes. - Sometimes playgrounds.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02- Yes.- Schools.- Yep. - Sometimes tennis courts.- Yep.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05We've got permission to land pretty much anywhere in London.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10'Hearing this will be of particular interest to Maria.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14'Not only does she live smack bang in the middle of London,

0:05:14 > 0:05:17'but she's also passionate about becoming a paramedic.'

0:05:17 > 0:05:21The thing that I want to learn the most from the emergency rescues services

0:05:21 > 0:05:26is being in their shoes and doing what they do every day for a living,

0:05:26 > 0:05:33and hopefully inspire people to know that if we were ever in an emergency situation, they'll be there.

0:05:33 > 0:05:38'Thankfully, most people will never need the services of London's Air Ambulance.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43'For those that do, the helicopter is capable of carrying them straight to hospital.

0:05:43 > 0:05:48'But its most important purpose is to take the medical team to the patient.'

0:05:48 > 0:05:51What we try and do is take everything that's in the hospital,

0:05:51 > 0:05:53all of the medicines and treatments,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55out to the scene of the car crash.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00So only now and again do we actually put the patient in the helicopter and bring them back to hospital.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04This is, in fact, a mobile A&E unit.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08'And it's time for the cadets to take a look inside.'

0:06:09 > 0:06:12One thing that you need when you're very, very poorly

0:06:12 > 0:06:15is oxygen.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18So this is a cylinder of oxygen.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23With patients who've got injuries to their chest or their lungs and their lungs have collapsed,

0:06:23 > 0:06:28this allows us to help them with their breathing and top up their oxygen levels.

0:06:28 > 0:06:33'As well as oxygen, the helicopter carries packs of fresh blood, a heart monitor...'

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Lily, give us your finger.

0:06:35 > 0:06:40If we pop that on there, we'll be able to tell just how much oxygen Lily's got in her blood.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42'..and even a portable life-support machine.

0:06:42 > 0:06:47'And it's got some pretty impressive equipment up front, too.'

0:06:47 > 0:06:52- It's like a video game.- Yeah. - I can't believe we're sitting in a helicopter.- I know.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04When we arrive on scene, we need to think about treating the patient.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07This is where it gets really important, cos what we're going to teach you

0:12:07 > 0:12:11can be the difference between life or death for a patient.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16'There are three key things that Dr Gareth and his team need to assess

0:12:16 > 0:12:19'as soon as they get to a patient, and remembering what they are

0:12:19 > 0:12:22'is as easy as ABC.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26'A stands for airway. If a patient isn't breathing properly,

0:12:26 > 0:12:30'the medic's first job is to make sure they have a clear airway.'

0:12:30 > 0:12:33And this is the little bit of kit that you need to use.

0:12:33 > 0:12:38You put it in upside down and turn and hold it like that.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41'B stands for breathing.'

0:12:41 > 0:12:44If the patient is breathing, we need to help them with extra oxygen,

0:12:44 > 0:12:48so we need to put this on over the patient's mouth

0:12:48 > 0:12:52and clip it on nice and tight, like that.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56'And finally, C stands for circulation.'

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Can you show me where the pulse is? Where are you going to check?

0:12:59 > 0:13:01On there or on your neck.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05So, after A, B and C, we need to get them onto a stretcher.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08'Getting someone onto a stretcher can be tricky,

0:13:08 > 0:13:11'especially if they have a serious back injury.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15'One wrong move here and the patient could end up being paralysed.'

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Ready, brace, roll.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22'This is all about technique and teamwork.'
