0:00:02 > 0:00:06These wannabe heroes are working together to perform daring rescues.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17Over the toughest terrain...

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Experiencing the highs...

0:00:24 > 0:00:26..and the lows.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31There's a new emergency crew in town.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Now, there's one final challenge to face.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38An ultimate rescue,

0:00:38 > 0:00:43the biggest challenge any Hero Squad cadet has ever had to face.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Six ordinary school kids.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Their mission - to learn how to save lives.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00But do they have what it takes to become real-life heroes?

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Last time, the cadets crewed up a £2.5 million RNLI lifeboat...

0:01:14 > 0:01:18..rescuing an injured Hero Squad Casualty trapped by the tide.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Now pull it towards you and get ready to throw it, OK?

0:01:23 > 0:01:24Josh!

0:01:24 > 0:01:25There were clashes.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28But Kyra drove the team to a strong rescue,

0:01:28 > 0:01:32sharing Hero of the Day with keen sailor Sam!

0:01:36 > 0:01:39This time, we've brought the Hero Squad to Cornwall.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Near the most southern tip of mainland Britain.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47The scene of one final challenge.

0:01:48 > 0:01:53A rescue so complex, it brings together not ONE, not TWO,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56but THREE emergency and rescue services.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02Land.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Sea.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06And air.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Everything they've done until now has been leading to this moment.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13The Hero Squad ULTIMATE rescue.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20The only thing is, no-one's told the cadets.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22- Cadets, good morning! - ALL: Morning.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24- How is everyone? - ALL: Good.

0:02:24 > 0:02:25Are you all raring to go?

0:02:25 > 0:02:27- ALL: Yeah.- Excited?

0:02:27 > 0:02:29- ALL: Yeah. - Well, that's good.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33Because I've got something really, really special in store.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35We're going to split you up...

0:02:35 > 0:02:37into three groups of two.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40The next time you see each other

0:02:40 > 0:02:43is going to be during the rescue.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46CHUCKLING

0:02:49 > 0:02:52I was shocked when we were told that we were going to be splitting

0:02:52 > 0:02:56up into three groups of two, because we haven't been split up before

0:02:56 > 0:02:57and I think it's going to affect us.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01I think it will be hard at first being split up from everyone

0:03:01 > 0:03:03because we've been together so long.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06I think it's a bit sad to be split up but as long as we, in the rescue

0:03:06 > 0:03:10we actually work together, I think we'll do really well.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Until now, the cadets have tackled

0:03:13 > 0:03:16every Hero Squad challenge together...

0:03:16 > 0:03:18ALL: Lift!

0:03:18 > 0:03:19..working as a team.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23- Josh, are you ready?- Ready!

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Helping each other when it gets tough.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31That's it, Kyra.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Yeah, I've done it, Kyra, if I can do it you can,

0:03:33 > 0:03:35and you're doing very well.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Well done!

0:03:38 > 0:03:40It's been a long journey together,

0:03:40 > 0:03:46but now for the first time these six courageous cadets are parting ways.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52They won't see each other again until the final rescue.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55And they'll have no idea what the others are up to.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Lily and Myles will be hitting the waves,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04returning to the RNLI to crew up an all-weather lifeboat.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13Maria and Josh will be tied up with Her Majesty's Coastguard,

0:04:13 > 0:04:15training to be a rope rescue team.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21And Sam and Kyra will be taking to the skies with the Royal Navy

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Search and Rescue service.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31Kyra and Sam, you're with me today.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36So I've asked your mentor to meet you right here in this field.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40And I think I can see him coming.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43MUSIC: "Ride Of The Valkyries" by Richard Wagner

0:04:52 > 0:04:53RAV WHOOPS

0:04:59 > 0:05:01You didn't expect that, did you?!

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Hello Cadets, I'm Petty Officer Gaz Kneeshaw

0:05:09 > 0:05:11and I'm going to be your mentor.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16Petty Officer Gaz Kneeshaw has been in the Royal Navy

0:05:16 > 0:05:17for over ten years,

0:05:17 > 0:05:21but he's much more at home in a helicopter than he is on a ship.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26That's because he's a member of the 771 Naval Air Squadron

0:05:26 > 0:05:29at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34Their famous red and grey Sea King Helicopters are called out

0:05:34 > 0:05:38over 200 times a year to assist everything from sailors

0:05:38 > 0:05:43stranded at sea to wounded walkers in need of urgent medical attention.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45There's no such thing as an average day in this job.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48We're here to help people and save people's lives.

0:05:48 > 0:05:49What could be better than that?

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Today, for the first time ever,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Gaz will be letting two 12-year-olds join his team.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Looking good, guys, looking good.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03- Can you hear me? - Just, can you hear me?

0:06:03 > 0:06:04Yeah, just about.

0:06:05 > 0:06:10And now it's time to check out Gaz's preferred method of transport,

0:06:10 > 0:06:12the Sea King Mk5 helicopter.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15- It's quite an impressive bit of kit, isn't it?- It's amazing.- Yeah.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Yeah, it's massive, though, and quite noisy.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Shall we have a look inside? BOTH: Yeah!

0:06:23 > 0:06:25- Wow.- Whoa.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Look at all the buttons!

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Yeah, there's quite a lot to think about, isn't there?

0:06:29 > 0:06:32So which seat out of the two seats is the pilot seat?

0:06:32 > 0:06:35You can fly these aircraft from either seat, and quite often

0:06:35 > 0:06:39control of the aircraft is passed over from one seat to another.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42The Sea King can fly with this side door wide open

0:06:42 > 0:06:45and it's from this position that winchmen like mentor Gaz

0:06:45 > 0:06:48can be lowered down to rescue people.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52I can go on the wire and I can bring somebody back up with me,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55whether it be in a stretcher or just in a strop or anything like that.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00I would love to have the opportunity to fly in one of these,

0:07:00 > 0:07:03I think it would be a really good experience.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Being in the Sea King was amazing.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08It was really, really cool and there were so many buttons that

0:07:08 > 0:07:11I don't know how you would be able to work out what they all do.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16Come on Sam, the Hero Squad MUST be able to master

0:07:16 > 0:07:18all kinds of essential rescue kit...

0:07:18 > 0:07:20no matter how hard it might look!

0:07:24 > 0:07:25Throughout their journey,

0:07:25 > 0:07:30the Hero Squad have had their hands on everything from fire engines

0:07:30 > 0:07:34to power tools and all-terrain rescue trucks.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37And when a builder fell from scaffolding in London, there was

0:07:37 > 0:07:40only one way to reach him fast.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44The helicopter ride was absolutely amazing,

0:07:44 > 0:07:48it's got to be one of the most best experiences of my life.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51If you thought THAT was impressive - what about THESE?!

0:07:53 > 0:07:58Bay Search and Rescue's six and a half tonne all-terrain vehicles.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02Used to reach people trapped in deadly quicksand at Morecombe Bay.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Wow, a 12-year-old driving a six-tonne vehicle!

0:08:12 > 0:08:14And that wasn't the only high-powered piece of kit

0:08:14 > 0:08:16the cadets got to use.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Remember this £2.5 million lifeboat?

0:08:23 > 0:08:28Well, when a casualty was injured and cut off by the tide...

0:08:28 > 0:08:29the Hero Squad crewed up

0:08:29 > 0:08:33Campbeltown's RNLI all-weather lifeboat to save her.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45Now two of them will be using their RNLI experience,

0:08:45 > 0:08:48for one last mission.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53And Myles and Lily are about to get their hands

0:08:53 > 0:08:56on an even MORE technologically advanced RNLI lifeboat.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Based at the bottom of a 45m-high cliff,

0:09:01 > 0:09:04down more than 200 steep steps...

0:09:07 > 0:09:09BOTH: Oh, wow.

0:09:11 > 0:09:17THIS is the £2.7 million Tamar Class all-weather lifeboat,

0:09:17 > 0:09:21one of the most advanced lifeboats in the RNLI'S all-weather fleet.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27Now, they just need someone to show them how to use it.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Hello, cadets. My name's Andrew Putt

0:09:29 > 0:09:32and I'm the coxswain of the Lizard lifeboat and I'm your mentor.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36Coxswain Andrew Putt is in charge of

0:09:36 > 0:09:39the Lizard's RNLI all-weather lifeboat.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Like all RNLI volunteers,

0:09:42 > 0:09:47his team are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50In the last five years they have rescued 74 people.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55It's very important they listen to what's going on.

0:09:55 > 0:09:56And do as they're told.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Myles and Lily will be using Lizard's lifeboat

0:10:01 > 0:10:04in the Ultimate Hero Squad - Final Rescue.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07So they need to know their way round the hi-tech controls.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10So, Lily, if you'd like to go in that seat.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Myles, you sit in that one.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15While Myles and Lily get comfortable,

0:10:15 > 0:10:18mentor Andrew decides to check their radio knowledge.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21To use the radio you have to push that red button there.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23He's giving them a refresher course

0:10:23 > 0:10:26in vital radio comms during a rescue.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29So if you would like to call the Coastguard just say

0:10:29 > 0:10:33"Coastguard, Coastguard, Coastguard, this the Lizard Lifeboat,

0:10:33 > 0:10:34"the Lizard lifeboat."

0:10:34 > 0:10:37Coastguard, Coastguard, Coastguard...

0:10:37 > 0:10:38Communicating well as a team will be

0:10:38 > 0:10:41all-important on the final rescue.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Something the Hero Squad hasn't always found easy!

0:10:46 > 0:10:50During Rubble Rescue, there was so much arguing this lot sounded

0:10:50 > 0:10:54more like a RABBLE than an Urban Search and Rescue team.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Put that down somewhere and help me get this one across.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00No, we need the drill to see if we can see anything first.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02We've got the drill, it's coming.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Sam, you're in charge so can you tell us what we're doing?

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Just listen to me.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10The bickering and confusion cost them valuable time,

0:11:10 > 0:11:11putting the casualty at risk.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Mentor John McKay was forced to step in.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19Just wait. There's far too many people giving it that.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21OK. Sam's in charge.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Sam is the man who you need to listen to.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26The Hero Squad had to learn to listen.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31And by the time they reached their penultimate rescue,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33they were working as a team again.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- Are you ready? - Josh, Sam, are you ready?

0:11:36 > 0:11:37Ready!

0:11:37 > 0:11:42Communicating clearly as they launched RNLI Campbeltown's Y boat.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Y Boat deployed!

0:11:44 > 0:11:45Well done, you guys.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48And rescued the Hero Squad casualty.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57And THIS will be like no other lifeboat launch

0:11:57 > 0:11:58they've ever experienced.

0:12:08 > 0:12:09That's a big door.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19The Lizard lifeboat weighs 32 tonnes.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24It's going to be Myles and Lily's job to safely release it,

0:12:24 > 0:12:27down a steep slipway into the sea.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32How fast does it go?

0:12:32 > 0:12:35We'll be doing about 15, 16mph.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Going down this one slide?!

0:12:37 > 0:12:40- Going downhill.- OK.

0:12:42 > 0:12:43Start her up now, then.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47There you go, that's it. Now just push that one.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04Oh, wow, this is amazing.

0:13:04 > 0:13:05That was...

0:13:11 > 0:13:15It was really cool cos when we went down it was like a rollercoaster

0:13:15 > 0:13:18and I really enjoyed it, especially when we hit the sea.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30They did very well. Very well indeed.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Looks like today's training is attracting some attention

0:13:38 > 0:13:40from some basking sharks.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43MUSIC: "Jaws Theme" by John Williams

0:13:43 > 0:13:46- Oh, my God!- Basking shark there, look. See his fin?

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Let's hope he's not around on rescue day,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51because there'll be no time for any distractions.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01Fancy taking part in daring rescue at the touch of a button?

0:14:01 > 0:14:05Head to the CBBC website and play the Hero Squad game.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12Today is all about preparing for one final challenge.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17Rescuing a bodyboarder who gets into serious trouble at sea.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22A surfer tries to save him.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29And although he gets him to the beach, the Hero Squad Casualty

0:14:29 > 0:14:33is freezing cold and in urgent need of medical attention.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38The bad news keeps coming.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41It's now become a double rescue as both Hero Squad Casualties

0:14:41 > 0:14:46are stranded with steep cliffs one side, sea on the other.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52Can the Hero Squad save them

0:14:52 > 0:14:56in the ultimate LAND, SEA and AIR rescue?

0:15:01 > 0:15:04There's just a few hours left for training.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06So excited!

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Unknown to Myles and Lily, our final pair of cadets, Josh and Maria,

0:15:10 > 0:15:14are just a few miles further along the Cornish coastline.

0:15:14 > 0:15:15SIRENS WAIL

0:15:17 > 0:15:19BOTH: Sirens!

0:15:19 > 0:15:20They don't know it yet,

0:15:20 > 0:15:25but they are about to meet one of Hero Squad's TOUGHEST mentors.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27LAUGHTER

0:15:38 > 0:15:40Good, morning cadets! BOTH: Morning.

0:15:40 > 0:15:45My name's Pete Pritchard and today I'm going to be your mentor.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Ex Royal Marine Pete Pritchard

0:15:50 > 0:15:54has been with Her Majesty's Coastguard for more than 20 years.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58He runs FIVE emergency rescue teams.

0:15:59 > 0:16:05I will not tolerate people who are not treating it seriously.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10There's a time and a place for fun, there's a time and a place for work.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Pete's no stranger to Hero Squad.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18He made a BIG impression on last year's cadets!

0:16:18 > 0:16:21CRUNCHING

0:16:21 > 0:16:23What's the matter, guys?

0:16:23 > 0:16:26I just heard a little click in my knuckles!

0:16:26 > 0:16:28I can't feel like all this bit of my hand.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30It's just gone numb.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32CRUNCHING

0:16:32 > 0:16:35Pete's handshakes are very strong and when he handshaked me and Josh

0:16:35 > 0:16:37it was really like rrrrrgghhh!

0:16:37 > 0:16:39But I guess that's Pete!

0:16:39 > 0:16:42I think Pete is a really good mentor.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44But I think he's really strict

0:16:44 > 0:16:48and I think he wants things done properly without any messing.

0:16:48 > 0:16:49Come on, then, let's go.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Their task will be to set up an anchor point

0:16:54 > 0:16:59for a Coastguard rope rescue - a double stake holdfast.

0:17:01 > 0:17:05New to Josh and Maria but not to last year's cadets,

0:17:05 > 0:17:10whose secure anchor point survived the full force of a rugby scrum!

0:17:15 > 0:17:20This time there'll be a whole Coastguard rescue team to test it.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23- Wow, it is quite heavy.- Yeah.

0:17:23 > 0:17:24Josh's hammer weighs around 7kg.

0:17:25 > 0:17:29Half the weight of the ones adult coastguards use.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35My arms are aching.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40Josh needs to concentrate and make sure he hits his mark,

0:17:40 > 0:17:42or he could easily injure himself.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47You can't have people wielding these things willy-nilly,

0:17:47 > 0:17:49because that's how accidents can occur.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55OK, and stop there. Let's give Maria a go.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57OK, Josh, get the lashing line.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02My arms are killing.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06- That's it, give it some welly. - Well done, Maria, that's great.

0:18:08 > 0:18:09- Oh!- That's it, OK.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15Once both stakes are secure, they need to be lashed together.

0:18:15 > 0:18:16Round the front.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20That's it, now pull it in tight.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23The lashing line must be pulled as tightly as possible,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26so all the stretch is removed.

0:18:26 > 0:18:27That's it.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31- Well done, Josh.- Lovely job.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34Time to put Josh and Maria's anchor point to the test!

0:18:35 > 0:18:36GUYS!

0:18:41 > 0:18:44In a real rescue, a hold fast would normally only need to

0:18:44 > 0:18:46take the weight of two people...

0:18:46 > 0:18:47Take the strain.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49..the rope technician and the casualty.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53- So far so good.- Yep.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56But the cadets are testing theirs on EIGHT!

0:18:56 > 0:18:58Take up the slack.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Take the strain, and pull.

0:19:02 > 0:19:03OK, look back.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05- Hold fast, is it moving?- No.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07Nothing. OK, and relax.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13Maria and Josh have proved they've got the stamina

0:19:13 > 0:19:15for a tough Coastguard rope rescue.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19It's not the first time the cadets

0:19:19 > 0:19:22have faced a physically exhausting task on Hero Squad.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28Throughout their Hero Squad journey the cadets

0:19:28 > 0:19:31have faced exhausting challenges many adults would struggle with.

0:19:33 > 0:19:38In their first mission, they had to brave sub-zero temperatures

0:19:38 > 0:19:41to rescue an injured skier on a mountain slope.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47Myles took the strain of the ski sledge AND the casualty -

0:19:47 > 0:19:49almost TWICE his body weight.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56The next time the cadets were up a mountain, the only way to

0:19:56 > 0:19:59reach the casualty was on foot.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02A climber was badly injured and Sam and Maria

0:20:02 > 0:20:06had the exhausting job of guiding her down to safety.

0:20:06 > 0:20:07Ready!

0:20:07 > 0:20:09GROANING

0:20:09 > 0:20:10That was heavy.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14I've learnt that the role of the mountain rescuer

0:20:14 > 0:20:17takes a lot of commitment. And you have to have courage.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19Sometimes you might not like the stuff you do,

0:20:19 > 0:20:21but you have to pull through it and be brave.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26And it wasn't just the rescues that were challenging.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Fire fighters wear heavy, bulky breathing apparatus

0:20:29 > 0:20:32to protect them in smoke-filled buildings.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35- Oh, no, that's scaring me. - Are you all right, Josh?

0:20:35 > 0:20:39But Josh couldn't take the heat of the BA kit.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41- I'm taking this up. - When I'm in small spaces

0:20:41 > 0:20:43I feel like I'm going to suffocate.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47The plan is, I'm going to take a couple of minutes

0:20:47 > 0:20:50and then I'm going to go back in.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54The Hero Squad cadets have demonstrated bravery,

0:20:54 > 0:20:58courage and determination in every challenge.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00They are going to need all of this and more,

0:21:00 > 0:21:03in the ultimate Hero Squad rescue.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Back at the airbase in Culdrose, Kyra's with Sam,

0:21:13 > 0:21:17training with the 771 Navy Search & Rescue Squadron.

0:21:19 > 0:21:23Their fleet of distinctive Sea King helicopters are used to

0:21:23 > 0:21:27rescue people from the most inhospitable of places.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31But when there's nowhere to land, there's only one way to reach

0:21:31 > 0:21:34the casualty. By winching out of a flying helicopter!

0:21:36 > 0:21:40Hanging from a helicopter on a 6mm-thick metal wire

0:21:40 > 0:21:43is not something for the faint-hearted.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46But it could be a skill that Kyra and Sam need to know for

0:21:46 > 0:21:50their final rescue so it's off to the classroom for a potentially

0:21:50 > 0:21:53life-saving lesson from mentor Gaz Kneeshaw.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57It comes down, pull it nice and tight.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01OK, then I'll get permission to winch the survivor outside

0:22:01 > 0:22:03or the person to transfer.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05I hope Kyra and Sam are paying attention

0:22:05 > 0:22:07because what they don't know is they're about to be winched

0:22:07 > 0:22:10out of a Sea King Helicopter for real!

0:22:10 > 0:22:12Time to break the news.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- Sam, Kyra, how's it going?- Hi, Rav.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17- Yeah, going really well. - Feel confident?

0:22:17 > 0:22:20- Yep.- Well, Gaz, I think it's about time we, er, put this to the test

0:22:20 > 0:22:23- and winched them out of a Sea King for real.- Yeah.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24SHE CHUCKLES

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Come on, then. Follow me, let's go.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36This is a huge moment for Sam and Kyra.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Not only is it the first time that either of them

0:22:38 > 0:22:42will have flown in a helicopter, but they're actually going to be

0:22:42 > 0:22:44lowered out of it whilst it's flying.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48All clear. Thumbs up.

0:22:48 > 0:22:49Can't wait.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- It's going to be so exciting - Yeah, it's going to be amazing.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Go for it!

0:23:00 > 0:23:03There you go, that's 3,000 horsepower lifting you in the air.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06This is so cool.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09PILOT CHATTER OVER RADIO

0:23:16 > 0:23:18PILOT: We'll go as close to the edge of the tarmac as we can.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20Are you looking forward to it?

0:23:20 > 0:23:23- Yeah, it's going to be great, you looking forward to it?- Yeah.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28Mentor Gaz had been in the Navy for five years

0:23:28 > 0:23:30before he got to do this and now Kyra and Sam

0:23:30 > 0:23:34are about to do it on their very first day of training.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40This is it. The moment of truth.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42But has 12-year-old Sam got what it takes?

0:23:50 > 0:23:52Got Sam in the single strop.

0:23:52 > 0:23:57Permission to put him overboard. Permission to get Sam out the door.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01Gaz gets clearance from the pilot, and Sam's away.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05OK. Lowering the winch.

0:24:07 > 0:24:12He's now hanging on a 6mm cable out of the Sea King.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15His life is in the hands of the helicopter crew.

0:24:18 > 0:24:19Nice one, Sam!

0:24:25 > 0:24:28Well done. That was so high!

0:24:29 > 0:24:31Wow. Was it good?

0:24:31 > 0:24:33- Yeah, it was awesome.- Excellent.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35Next up - Kyra.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37OK, Kyra, you ready?

0:24:37 > 0:24:41At 1.7m, Kyra's the tallest of all the cadets,

0:24:41 > 0:24:44but this 12-year-old struggles with a fear of heights.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50And during mountain rescue training, it almost got the better of her.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54I think the hardest thing for me must have been overcoming

0:24:54 > 0:24:57my fear of heights, especially when it came to mountain rescue.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59It was really nerve-racking for me.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04But now she's got one more chance to beat it for good.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Permission to put Kyra overboard. PILOT: OK, clear.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Roger, got the affirmative,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12raising the winch. Winch has got the weight.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15Lowering the winch.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Brilliant bravery from Kyra!

0:25:25 > 0:25:27She's on the deck.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29Whoa, that was amazing!

0:25:29 > 0:25:33- That was so much fun! - Was it good?- Yeah.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36- Cos it looked really high up. - Yeah, it looked really high up!

0:25:36 > 0:25:38That's because it was! Well done.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46I think my fear of heights has finally gone away

0:25:46 > 0:25:48and is never going to come back to trouble me again.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57The cadets have had an incredible day of training

0:25:57 > 0:25:59with three emergency and rescue services.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04The transformation from cadets

0:26:04 > 0:26:11to RNLI, Coastguard and Royal Navy rescuers is almost complete.

0:26:13 > 0:26:18Sam and Kyra took to the skies on board a Navy Sea King helicopter.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20That was so much fun, it was epic,

0:26:20 > 0:26:22and it's the best experience I've had in my life.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27I've had some amazing experiences on Hero Squad, and...

0:26:27 > 0:26:30but this has definitely been the best training day.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33How many 12 to 13-year-olds get to jump out of a flying helicopter?

0:26:35 > 0:26:39Myles and Lily launched RNLI Lizard's all-weather lifeboat

0:26:39 > 0:26:41with a splash.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43It was amazing and I loved it.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50I'm really excited, really enjoyed it and I can't wait for the mission.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55And Josh and Maria proved they've got the strength to anchor

0:26:55 > 0:26:58a Coastguard rope rescue.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00I really like working with the Coastguards,

0:27:00 > 0:27:03because their work involves lots of responsibility.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06I'm feeling nervous about the last big challenge on Hero Squad

0:27:06 > 0:27:09but I think it's going to be great.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12Next time...

0:27:12 > 0:27:16the cadets must put their training to use, when a Hero Squad casualty

0:27:16 > 0:27:19gets into serious trouble off the coast of Cornwall.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23What starts out as a simple sea rescue

0:27:23 > 0:27:30quickly escalates into a land, air and sea rescue.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33Can they prove they have what it takes

0:27:33 > 0:27:35to become real-life heroes?
