0:02:29 > 0:02:33'But while Hannah looks to have all the confidence in the world,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08- Oh, thank you very much. - I'm Hannah's mother

0:03:08 > 0:03:10- Hi, Hannah.- Hello.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13I've heard so much about you!

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Who's this guy with the guitar?

0:03:20 > 0:03:22That's my boyfriend... But it's, like, been scrunched up

0:03:22 > 0:03:24every time we fight I scrunch it up and throw it under me bed

0:03:24 > 0:03:27and then when we make up then I stick it back up again!

0:03:27 > 0:03:29THEY LAUGH

0:03:29 > 0:03:32So I heard that you only started showing people your songs

0:03:32 > 0:03:35not too long ago? Is that right?

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Um, yeah that's... Yep.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39Yep. Would I be able to hear one of your songs?

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- Ummm...- Please...

0:03:46 > 0:03:48- Yeah.- Yeah!

0:03:49 > 0:03:51OK... All right.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58'Up until now the only people who've heard Hannah's songs

0:03:58 > 0:04:00'have been the pop stars on her walls,

0:04:00 > 0:04:02'but I think that if she can find the courage

0:04:02 > 0:04:05'to start performing her own work in public

0:04:05 > 0:04:07'it could be brilliant for her confidence.'

0:04:07 > 0:04:09So, it's so mad to have you like in my room,

0:04:09 > 0:04:13because, like, I've all your songs on my phone

0:04:13 > 0:04:17and, like, it's just mad that you're, like, sitting here.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Well, hopefully I'll have some of your songs on my phone soon.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22This is just really crazy, like...

0:04:22 > 0:04:24So, what's this song called, then?

0:04:24 > 0:04:27My...Musical Autobiography... So...

0:04:35 > 0:04:40# Hi, I'm Hannah I can't sing that well

0:04:40 > 0:04:44# If you told me a secret I'd never tell

0:04:44 > 0:04:46# Unless it was to

0:04:46 > 0:04:48# One of my best friends

0:04:48 > 0:04:50# Let's get off the subject

0:04:50 > 0:04:53# Hi, when I'm all grown up

0:04:53 > 0:04:55# I want to rock the stage

0:04:55 > 0:04:59# I want to get older but never age

0:04:59 > 0:05:01# And I've a sad obsession

0:05:01 > 0:05:04# With the lazy-eyed man called Russell Howard

0:05:04 > 0:05:06# Oh-oh-oh

0:05:06 > 0:05:09# Imma put on a show

0:05:10 > 0:05:13# To show you

0:05:13 > 0:05:16# Me...

0:05:16 > 0:05:18# Let you hear my musical autobiography

0:05:18 > 0:05:22# Oh, I want to put on a show... #

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Her song-writing is great and I love her lyrics,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27she's really funny, she's got a lot to say

0:05:27 > 0:05:29and you can really see her identity through her lyrics,

0:05:29 > 0:05:32you know, this... That song couldn't be about anyone else,

0:05:32 > 0:05:35it was about Hannah, and I'm glad that she picked that one to play me,

0:05:35 > 0:05:38because it really kind of gave me a sense of who she is.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41# Oh, oh, oh-oh... #

0:05:43 > 0:05:45SHE CHEERS

0:05:45 > 0:05:47That's amazing!

0:05:47 > 0:05:48Thank you.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50What an amazing song to hear everything about you.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53That's, like, brilliant.

0:05:53 > 0:05:54When did you write that song?

0:05:54 > 0:05:57A couple of months ago. But I never really played it anywhere,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00I just... I was just kind of restricted, just playing in me room.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Yeah.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04I always just kind of played it, like, in here...

0:06:04 > 0:06:07And how do you write your songs? Just get the chords going

0:06:07 > 0:06:09and then do the words afterwards...?

0:06:09 > 0:06:11I have, like, a melody in my head

0:06:11 > 0:06:13and then just put lyrics to it, just...

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Usually start with a melody first

0:06:15 > 0:06:17and then you put the chords around it?

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- Yeah.- OK, that's cool.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21'This girl could really go places

0:06:21 > 0:06:26'and we've got some exciting plans for her...'

0:06:26 > 0:06:29DUBSTEP MUSIC

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Next up of our Hit The Stage kids is Shay.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38When this 13-year-old kick-boxing fanatic

0:06:38 > 0:06:40is not perfecting his roundhouse kick,

0:06:40 > 0:06:44he's busy becoming the City of Derry's next superstar DJ.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50When you're playing dance music for all the people

0:06:50 > 0:06:52and they're dancing, it kind of makes you happy,

0:06:52 > 0:06:56because you know you're providing the music and you're...

0:06:56 > 0:06:58You're making them dance, and making them be happy.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04He persuaded his mum to buy him all the latest DJ equipment

0:07:04 > 0:07:07so he could start mixing tunes and playing gigs,

0:07:07 > 0:07:12but mum Sinead didn't realise just how loud DJs like to play.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18Shay! Can you turn that music down! I can't have a cup of tea in peace!

0:07:23 > 0:07:25He's just raring to get out of the bedroom

0:07:25 > 0:07:28and get an audience up on its feet dancing.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31So far, he's played birthday parties, family events,

0:07:31 > 0:07:35and his local community centre, but this DJ has big dreams.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38In the future I would like to do something really big,

0:07:38 > 0:07:41like a festival, or just play in a really big club.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45Today he's gearing up for his biggest gig to date,

0:07:45 > 0:07:48supporting local dance-music legends Japanese Popstars

0:07:48 > 0:07:52at one of Derry's best music venues, The Nerve Centre.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56I'm impressed that Shay is already playing the best local venues,

0:07:56 > 0:07:59but I'm even more impressed that he got this gig

0:07:59 > 0:08:01by just going to the venue and asking.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04It's true what they say, "If you don't ask, you don't get."

0:08:05 > 0:08:09I was explaining to the man on the counter that I'm a DJ

0:08:09 > 0:08:10and he said, "Would you like a gig?"

0:08:10 > 0:08:14I said, "Aye." And the rest is history.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17And now Shay has got his big gig, it needs big planning,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20there could be up to 500 people at the event.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23When you're DJing, you have to take a lot of things.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26The few things that I like to do is make sure I have everything.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28You know, list, check it - put it in me back pocket,

0:08:28 > 0:08:32and when I'm leaving check it off again, make sure I have everything.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35With everything listed and checked, it's show time.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46DUBSTEP MUSIC

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Shay is playing a blinding set,

0:08:53 > 0:08:55the beats are right, the lights are perfect,

0:08:55 > 0:08:57and the graphics are stunning,

0:08:57 > 0:08:59but there's just one thing missing...

0:09:03 > 0:09:05..a crowd to enjoy it.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07I mean, the room, is like...

0:09:07 > 0:09:10just looking into darkness, it puts you down a bit, kind of...

0:09:10 > 0:09:11You do feel a bit less excited

0:09:11 > 0:09:14when there's not a lot of people there.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17I'm so disappointed for Shay,

0:09:17 > 0:09:20it's such a shame that no-one was there to see him perform.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24But he should know that dealing with knock-backs like this

0:09:24 > 0:09:26is all part of learning how to succeed in music.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28I remember gigs where I would play

0:09:28 > 0:09:30and the only other people watching

0:09:30 > 0:09:34were the other bands that were playing on the same night, so...!

0:09:34 > 0:09:37You have to think of it sometimes as, like, good practice,

0:09:37 > 0:09:40because you can think actually there's no pressure

0:09:40 > 0:09:43but you're still in that environment, so by the time

0:09:43 > 0:09:45people do get there, you're just, like, killing it.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50'I'm going to make sure that next time Shay performs

0:09:50 > 0:09:52'he'll have an audience to play to.'

0:09:55 > 0:09:58Shay and Hannah are just two of the Hit The Stage group

0:09:58 > 0:10:00that I'm going to be working with throughout the year.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02We've got harp players,

0:10:02 > 0:10:04fiddlers, pianists,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06singers and drummers.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10And Glenn and Jenny have already got the ball rolling.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12So, I'm here at the Playhouse this morning,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14to meet the kids for the first time as a group,

0:10:14 > 0:10:18and I can't wait to hear them play their instruments.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21MUSIC PLAYS

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Hummm, I can hear them playing already...

0:10:26 > 0:10:29Hi, guys. It's nice to meet you!

0:10:30 > 0:10:32They don't know it yet

0:10:32 > 0:10:34but I have plans for everyone to play together as a group,

0:10:34 > 0:10:38but right now I just want to get to know them all a little bit better.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Ohhh!

0:10:46 > 0:10:48So, what are you working on?

0:10:48 > 0:10:51- We've been working on a duet together.- Can I hear it?- Yeah.

0:10:55 > 0:10:56Oh, cool.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03The spectrum is so wide, you know, which is brilliant,

0:11:03 > 0:11:06because everyone's got their own identity and, um...

0:11:06 > 0:11:08So that's really great

0:11:08 > 0:11:10and everyone can kind of cheer each other on,

0:11:10 > 0:11:12but at the same time it kind of makes my job difficult

0:11:12 > 0:11:15cos I've got to kind of find a piece of music

0:11:15 > 0:11:18where everyone can get involved and mix together.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21So, I've just heard you all playing

0:11:21 > 0:11:23and some of you have just started learning

0:11:23 > 0:11:25and some of you have been playing for years,

0:11:25 > 0:11:27but I just want to let you know that none of that matters

0:11:27 > 0:11:29because these next couple of months

0:11:29 > 0:11:31are all about giving you opportunities

0:11:31 > 0:11:33that are going to blow your mind, inspire you,

0:11:33 > 0:11:35and we're just going to have some fun from music.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Will you sing now, Katy?

0:11:39 > 0:11:43- Ah! What do you want me to sing? - Keep On Moving When The Lights Is On.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Yeah?

0:11:44 > 0:11:47'I came here to listen to everyone else play,

0:11:47 > 0:11:50'the last thing I was expecting to do was to have to perform myself!'

0:11:50 > 0:11:52- Hi, girls. - ALL: Hi, how are you?

0:11:52 > 0:11:56Connor's just asked me to sing Lights On for you guys,

0:11:56 > 0:11:59would you play the guitar for me, while I sing?

0:11:59 > 0:12:01ALL: All right.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04I've sung this song probably about 3,000 times in my life,

0:12:04 > 0:12:06so, hopefully, I won't forget the words!

0:12:11 > 0:12:14# Cos I will keep on going until they say so

0:12:14 > 0:12:16# And even When they do

0:12:16 > 0:12:18# It's so hard for me to go

0:12:18 > 0:12:19# While them others at the cloakroom

0:12:19 > 0:12:21# And some others out the door

0:12:21 > 0:12:24# We can keep on going in the middle of the floor

0:12:24 > 0:12:28# Yeah, I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:28 > 0:12:31# So come and play me just one more song

0:12:31 > 0:12:35# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:35 > 0:12:38# So you can't scare me with the lights on

0:12:38 > 0:12:41# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:41 > 0:12:45# So come and play me just one more song

0:12:45 > 0:12:48# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:48 > 0:12:51# So you can't scare me with the lights on

0:12:53 > 0:12:59# Hey, yeah, yeah

0:12:59 > 0:13:02# I keep on moving with the lights on... #

0:13:05 > 0:13:07ALL: Whoo!

0:13:07 > 0:13:09APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:13:09 > 0:13:10'Being put on the spot like that

0:13:10 > 0:13:13'was as nerve-wrecking as any big gig I've played,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16'but thankfully I had great talent backing me up on the guitar.'

0:13:18 > 0:13:21'I've been thinking about Shay's talents too,

0:13:21 > 0:13:22'and I think the time has come

0:13:22 > 0:13:25'for him to know what it feels like to play at a big event.'

0:13:28 > 0:13:30'But if Shay wants to make the big time,

0:13:30 > 0:13:34'he is going to have to climb a mountain for real!'

0:13:34 > 0:13:36- Told you you'd need Wellies.- Yep.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41'I've sent Glenn on a wet and windy mission

0:13:41 > 0:13:44'to reveal news of a big opportunity.'

0:13:44 > 0:13:47We're up a mountain, it's freezing,

0:13:47 > 0:13:49it's windy and it's raining and muddy...

0:13:49 > 0:13:52You're probably wondering why you're here?

0:13:52 > 0:13:54- I am.- Katy B's going to explain.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59'Hey Shay, it's Katy. I'm stuck in the recording studio,

0:13:59 > 0:14:04'but I'm taking a little bit of time out to tell you about your big gig.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06'It might not look like much now,

0:14:06 > 0:14:09'but in a few weeks, these muddy fields will be transformed

0:14:09 > 0:14:12'into Northern Ireland's biggest music festival.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15'All sorts of bands are going to be playing on massive stages,

0:14:15 > 0:14:17'you are going to be up there with them,

0:14:17 > 0:14:19'playing some of the biggest tunes too.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21'I've managed to get you a slot

0:14:21 > 0:14:24'just before a Radio 1 DJ Philly Taggart plays,

0:14:24 > 0:14:26'so there's going to be a really big crowd.'

0:14:26 > 0:14:28Looking out here, can you imagine

0:14:28 > 0:14:30that this is going to be a massive festival?

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Ah, no, I can just see a field.

0:14:33 > 0:14:34'It means a lot that Katy B told me

0:14:34 > 0:14:36'that I was going to be playing at a festival

0:14:36 > 0:14:39'because it's something I've always dreamed about,

0:14:39 > 0:14:40'and for the next four weeks

0:14:40 > 0:14:43'all I'll be doing is just making me set, getting ready,

0:14:43 > 0:14:47'getting prepared for everything. And hopefully it goes well.'

0:14:52 > 0:14:54'Now, ever since Hannah played me her song

0:14:54 > 0:14:56'it's been stuck in my head, it's so good.'

0:14:59 > 0:15:01'But if she wants to fulfil her potential,

0:15:01 > 0:15:02'she'll have to get out there

0:15:02 > 0:15:06'and get used to other people listening to her own songs.'

0:15:08 > 0:15:09'As a starting point,

0:15:09 > 0:15:13'I've organised for her to be a support act at a local gig.

0:15:13 > 0:15:14'If this goes well,

0:15:14 > 0:15:16'there's no telling where she could be playing next!'

0:15:16 > 0:15:19So, how do you feel about that?

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Really excited, but, like, nervous.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24I kind of feel like I'm going to melt.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27So hope... Roughly how many songs are we talking about here?

0:15:27 > 0:15:29- HE EXHALES - I'd say about three.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Three. And are they all originals or...?

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- All original.- Oh!- I don't know what you're so afraid of,

0:15:34 > 0:15:36playing your songs in front of people.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39It's... It's own original stuff and if, you know...

0:15:39 > 0:15:42If somebody was to turn round and say, "That's not good,"

0:15:42 > 0:15:43I'd be really... I'd be really hurt.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45'Hannah's got a lot to think about,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48'but if you fancy having a crack at writing a song yourself,

0:15:48 > 0:15:50'here are some top tips.'

0:16:01 > 0:16:05Lyrics are, majority of the time... Are the last things to be put down.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08And the last things that are going to be finished usually.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11We all sit down and discuss... we play each other little snippets

0:16:11 > 0:16:13and we kind of work through them, which ones we like

0:16:13 > 0:16:17and which ones we can all be excited about.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Usually, we will record it and then we will...

0:16:20 > 0:16:22then put the vocals on top of it.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30The best way to write a song is to write from the heart.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33Always write from true-life experiences.

0:16:33 > 0:16:34But everyone's different,

0:16:34 > 0:16:36everyone likes to write songs about different things.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38Things'll come, you'll experience something,

0:16:38 > 0:16:41you'll get your heart broken, or walk down the street

0:16:41 > 0:16:44and you'll see something happening, it will inspire you in some way.

0:16:44 > 0:16:45You'll hear a new band or a new song...

0:16:45 > 0:16:46Something will come along,

0:16:46 > 0:16:50as long as you keep yourself surrounded by music,

0:16:50 > 0:16:52then songs will always come, do you know what I mean?

0:17:17 > 0:17:19It's an exciting morning in Shay's house,

0:17:19 > 0:17:21details of the Glasgowbury Festival

0:17:21 > 0:17:24have been published in a national newspaper

0:17:24 > 0:17:26and not only will he find out what time he's on,

0:17:26 > 0:17:29he'll be able to find out just how long he'll be playing for.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33So, I'm hoping for a half-an-hour set, that would be the best,

0:17:33 > 0:17:36I don't think they would give me any time over that.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43Here we are. So I'm on for an hour.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46And I'm on at half seven to half eight, so that's...

0:17:46 > 0:17:48That's brilliant. Wasn't expecting to be that late,

0:17:48 > 0:17:50or have that amount of time to play,

0:17:50 > 0:17:54So that's... That's... I'm going to enjoy that.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59I've no doubts about Shay's ability,

0:17:59 > 0:18:00but he's got a big challenge ahead.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04He should go straight to the top for a helping hand.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06Shay is headed for London,

0:18:06 > 0:18:11where I've arranged for him to meet Radio 1's very own Scott Mills.

0:18:13 > 0:18:14Ah, it's a bit scary on trains,

0:18:14 > 0:18:16it's like you're looking at something,

0:18:16 > 0:18:18some trees or something, and just... Bam!

0:18:22 > 0:18:23It's the first time

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Shay has ever headed for the bright lights of the big city,

0:18:26 > 0:18:28which makes it an adventure in itself!

0:18:31 > 0:18:34I'm glad to get out of the Tube, it's a bit scary!

0:18:38 > 0:18:41I didn't expect to see the actual red buses, or the...

0:18:41 > 0:18:44black taxis. I thought that was just like a stereotype.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52'Scott Mills is a DJing legend,

0:18:52 > 0:18:55'he's done it all - from hosting his own Radio 1 show,

0:18:55 > 0:18:59'to performing to thousands at festivals all over the world.'

0:18:59 > 0:19:01He's a proper DJ.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03'Great intro, Shay.'

0:19:03 > 0:19:05Like, beat matching and everything!

0:19:05 > 0:19:08- Oh, no. I can't even do that! - I said that!

0:19:08 > 0:19:11Oh, no. I've got to watch my back!

0:19:11 > 0:19:12LAUGHTER

0:19:12 > 0:19:15'Shay settles in to hear a bit of Scott's show

0:19:15 > 0:19:17'before quizzing him on how to handle a festival crowd.'

0:19:19 > 0:19:22How do you feel about DJing in front of a crowd?

0:19:22 > 0:19:23Is it scary?

0:19:23 > 0:19:26I used to really, really get scared,

0:19:26 > 0:19:29but, um, the more you do it, the less scared you become

0:19:29 > 0:19:32and it's actually really exciting.

0:19:32 > 0:19:33Does it scare you?

0:19:33 > 0:19:35Um...

0:19:35 > 0:19:36sort of.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38I think the adrenaline of when you get out there

0:19:38 > 0:19:41and you see all those people, initially it will be scary,

0:19:41 > 0:19:43but once you've started I think you'll be fine.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45They're all there to have a good time,

0:19:45 > 0:19:48so, you know, they're... It's going to be great, it's going to be fine.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50'That's great advice from Scott,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53'time for Shay to start preparing his festival set.'

0:19:57 > 0:19:58It's a very skilled job.

0:19:58 > 0:19:59He chooses the tracks

0:19:59 > 0:20:03that he thinks will attract a crowd and keep them dancing.

0:20:03 > 0:20:04He has to work out

0:20:04 > 0:20:07what song is going to flow effortlessly into a another

0:20:07 > 0:20:10by matching the beats in the song,

0:20:10 > 0:20:12or the BPM as the DJs call it.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15A set list is just completely different from a play list

0:20:15 > 0:20:16on something like iTunes.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18That's what most people think it is.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20The music I make is very technical.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22Not content with just picking the best tunes

0:20:22 > 0:20:24and mixing them into each other,

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Shay is able to add his own musical compositions,

0:20:27 > 0:20:28which help improve his set.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31There's a lot of work that I have to do before I'm happy with it -

0:20:31 > 0:20:35and if you listen to it together with everything else...

0:20:36 > 0:20:38HEAVY BEAT PLAYS

0:20:38 > 0:20:42So, that's the kicking under the song. This is the kick you use...

0:20:42 > 0:20:44I'm thinking about changing it.

0:20:44 > 0:20:45At the touch of a button,

0:20:45 > 0:20:49Shay can call upon a full orchestra of musical instruments

0:20:49 > 0:20:51to enhance the sound of the tracks he's picked.

0:20:53 > 0:20:58So, I'm thinking of this pattern, just simple. Just playing in.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02So, usually I just play around with the drum patterns.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05DRUMBEAT PLAYS

0:21:06 > 0:21:09Just going to loop it to see if it sounds all right.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13That sounds better.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17Sounds better than just a plain four-four kick.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23After two short weeks of practice,

0:21:23 > 0:21:26it's the day of Hannah's first-ever gig.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30But even budding pop stars have to go to school.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35Haven't been able to concentrate at all today.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38I'm really scared in case I forget the words or I forget...

0:21:40 > 0:21:44If I, like, mess up the chords, if I, like... Just everything...

0:21:45 > 0:21:50Just everything that could go wrong is going through my head.

0:21:52 > 0:21:57When a girl is up against it, what she needs is her best friend.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00- Catherine comes round to help with the preparations.- Are you excited?

0:22:00 > 0:22:04- A little bit.- Top of the priority list is what to wear.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06- Hannah?- What?

0:22:06 > 0:22:08You have half an hour to get ready.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10Do you want Catherine to do your make-up?

0:22:10 > 0:22:12She has half an hour before she has to go.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14Please just wash your face,

0:22:14 > 0:22:18put yourself into some pyjamas until you get your clothes on

0:22:18 > 0:22:20- and do your make-up.- OK.

0:22:25 > 0:22:30Hannah is normally never, ever, ever, ever nervous, so it's kind of weird.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35I've looked in the spare room, I've looked in the drawers,

0:22:35 > 0:22:39I've looked in your wardrobe. Now, have you any idea where it could be?

0:22:39 > 0:22:41Oh, look!

0:22:41 > 0:22:43You see, that skirt isn't suitable.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46- It is suitable.- No, it's too clingy.

0:22:46 > 0:22:47- It isn't.- It is too clingy.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49- It's not too clingy. - It is too clingy.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Are you going to listen to her?

0:22:51 > 0:22:53Listen to your mother. For once.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Oh she's... She's serious, Hannah

0:22:55 > 0:22:58- Oh, dear, look who's here(!) - BOTH: Ooooooo.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02- I'm going to kill the two of you. - Go away.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07- SHE LAUGHS - Hannah!

0:23:07 > 0:23:08What!

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Listen, it's time to go. Are you ready?

0:23:10 > 0:23:12No!

0:23:12 > 0:23:16As Hannah continues to wrestle with the all-important question

0:23:16 > 0:23:19of "What's a girl to wear?", Shay's big day has arrived.

0:23:28 > 0:23:29Glasgowbury is the largest

0:23:29 > 0:23:32family-friendly festival in Northern Ireland,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34with over 5,000 people of all ages

0:23:34 > 0:23:36dancing to some of the biggest local acts,

0:23:36 > 0:23:39and Shay is here to keep the party going.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45He heads straight to the dance stage

0:23:45 > 0:23:47to check out where he'll be taking to the decks

0:23:47 > 0:23:51right before Radio 1's Phil Taggart plays a headline set.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58Watching the other DJs at work,

0:23:58 > 0:24:01and crucially, how the crowd are reacting to the music,

0:24:01 > 0:24:03Shay makes a difficult decision.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07I would say, looking at some of the DJs,

0:24:07 > 0:24:10just by what they're playing and how the crowd's reacting,

0:24:10 > 0:24:12- I want to change the set slightly. - RECORD SCRATCHES

0:24:12 > 0:24:16What did he say? Change his set list - at this stage?!

0:24:16 > 0:24:17Let's rewind that!

0:24:19 > 0:24:23- I want to change the set slightly. - He really means it!

0:24:23 > 0:24:25He is unpicking all of his hard preparation

0:24:25 > 0:24:26and is going to start from scratch

0:24:26 > 0:24:30to pick the tracks he hopes will attract and keep the biggest crowd.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33I don't really want to be doin' it.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Because I have the set perfectly made

0:24:36 > 0:24:40where I know what time they mix on and what time they mix out.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44With just half an hour to go before he hits the stage,

0:24:44 > 0:24:45he is taking a big risk!

0:24:45 > 0:24:50It's all part of being a DJ, you have to take risks, in playing.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53I'm just trying to know what everybody wants to hear.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00Only a few months ago Shay was playing to an empty room,

0:25:00 > 0:25:03but now he's preparing to play the biggest gig of his life.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04The question is,

0:25:04 > 0:25:08will he be able to make it up as he goes along, track by track?

0:25:11 > 0:25:15ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, your DJ for the evening -

0:25:15 > 0:25:18give it up for Shay Whelan!

0:25:20 > 0:25:22HEAVY DUBSTEP PLAYS

0:25:33 > 0:25:36First track down, and the crowd are still dancing,

0:25:36 > 0:25:38he's under pressure to keep this good start going.

0:25:47 > 0:25:48It seems to be working,

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Shay's last-minute music choices

0:25:50 > 0:25:53are bringing more and more people to the dance stage.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57It looks like he's really pulled it off. Go on, Shay!

0:26:10 > 0:26:11Give it up for Shay Whelan!

0:26:11 > 0:26:13CHEERING

0:26:14 > 0:26:18Only 13. How sick was that?

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Give it again, give it again, give it again!

0:26:22 > 0:26:24This is the boy!

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Never had a feeling like that before, so happy.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30The set turned out perfect. Never been this happy in my life.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32Ohhh!

0:26:36 > 0:26:39'Having played a blinding set of brilliant dance music,

0:26:39 > 0:26:43'Shay is finding out what it really feels like to be a superstar DJ.'

0:26:46 > 0:26:48'When I came down I was signing autographs,

0:26:48 > 0:26:51'getting hugs. Everything.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53'Just everybody recognised me!

0:26:53 > 0:26:55It's good to be recognised, that's what every DJ wants.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58'It's what you need, just to be recognised.'

0:26:59 > 0:27:02'But there's one part of being a superstar DJ

0:27:02 > 0:27:05'that Shay is not entirely comfortable with.'

0:27:05 > 0:27:07Go on, give her a kiss!

0:27:10 > 0:27:12'And that even goes for his mum.'

0:27:12 > 0:27:14'This was the best gig I've ever played,'

0:27:14 > 0:27:17best type of day - sunny weather, outdoors.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Best reaction, best crowd - everything.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Next time on Hit The Stage,

0:27:27 > 0:27:29will new-starter Evan hit the right notes?

0:27:29 > 0:27:31HE SINGS

0:27:31 > 0:27:33You probably pitched that a bit high.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36- It was OK.- No, it wasn't OK.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38Will the group like my choice of song?

0:27:38 > 0:27:41Everybody keeps saying that they sort of hear it all the time,

0:27:41 > 0:27:42so it's played-out.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44And will Hannah even make it to the stage...?

0:27:44 > 0:27:50Everything bad that can happen I feel is going to happen...now.
