0:01:39 > 0:01:43when she's teaching students how to play the harp or sing.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46It's really inspiring to think that these kids really have
0:01:46 > 0:01:48so much potential, so I'm really,
0:01:48 > 0:01:51really excited to see what they're going to come up with.

0:03:04 > 0:03:05and dream about. I would love that.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12Micaela has a fantastic voice,
0:03:12 > 0:03:15and needs an opportunity that will really test her.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18I think we've found it in one of the great events that is happening
0:03:18 > 0:03:20in Derry this year.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22Glenn is popping round with some big news.
0:03:24 > 0:03:30So, how would you feel playing a gig at the Grand Vintage Ball
0:03:30 > 0:03:33in The Venue in front of a couple of thousand people?
0:03:33 > 0:03:35The Venue?
0:03:35 > 0:03:37The main venue, packed full.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41Oh, no, it's The Venue!
0:03:42 > 0:03:45The Venue holds 2,000 people
0:03:45 > 0:03:48and is the main stage for all City Of Culture events.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52Before going to school, Micaela is heading to check it out.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56The Grand Vintage Ball is a celebration of the type of music
0:03:56 > 0:03:58your grandparents probably listened too
0:03:58 > 0:04:03and everyone is encouraged to dress up in their best vintage clothes.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06Micaela will be there singing solo in a line-up of stars
0:04:06 > 0:04:08from the vintage scene.
0:04:09 > 0:04:10What do you think?
0:04:11 > 0:04:12Oh, goodness.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19Are you having a laugh? It's massive.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27What do you think of the view from here?
0:04:27 > 0:04:30I honestly think if I think too much about the people out there,
0:04:30 > 0:04:32I'll just like, die.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41You'll be standing right here belting your song out.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45I can't cope right now.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48I'm excited. Are you excited?
0:04:48 > 0:04:50It's everything I kind of wanted,
0:04:50 > 0:04:53but at the same time I'm kind of sceptical and scared about it.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55I'll calm myself down and not think about this now
0:04:55 > 0:04:57cos I have to go to school
0:04:57 > 0:05:00and I'll think about this after three o'clock.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07I'll have a wee day dream about this in maths.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15So Micaela's been given this fantastic opportunity,
0:05:15 > 0:05:18but it's not as easy as just walking out on stage and just singing -
0:05:18 > 0:05:21she's going to have to pick a song, rehearse it
0:05:21 > 0:05:23and find something to wear in just three weeks,
0:05:23 > 0:05:26so there's lots of hard work ahead.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28- Are you excited? - A bit.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30But for Hannah, time is up.
0:05:30 > 0:05:31The last time we saw her
0:05:31 > 0:05:34she was struggling to make it out of the house in time
0:05:34 > 0:05:35for her first ever gig.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38Hannah! Listen, it's time to go. Are you ready?
0:05:38 > 0:05:40She's a brilliant singer/songwriter
0:05:40 > 0:05:44who up until now has never played her songs in public,
0:05:44 > 0:05:46but all that's about to change.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51She's finally made it to her gig where 300 paying customers
0:05:51 > 0:05:55are taking their seats to listen to some of the best local artists.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57It's an older crowd than she'd like,
0:05:57 > 0:06:00but they will be the first people apart from me and her mum
0:06:00 > 0:06:02to hear her original songs.
0:06:02 > 0:06:06I've got butterflies...and I feel like I'm going to throw up.
0:06:07 > 0:06:12There's nothing I love more than just playing music and making music.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16So I need to not let the nerves get to me, just...
0:06:16 > 0:06:18OBJECT DROPS
0:06:19 > 0:06:24Just everything bad that can happen...
0:06:24 > 0:06:26I feel is going to happen...
0:06:26 > 0:06:27now.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37She's 15, she's a singer/songwriter,
0:06:37 > 0:06:40so could you please give a warm welcome to Hannah.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42APPLAUSE
0:07:01 > 0:07:04# Hi, I'm Hannah
0:07:04 > 0:07:07# I can't sing that well
0:07:07 > 0:07:10# If you told me a secret I'd never tell
0:07:10 > 0:07:15# Unless it was to one of my best friends
0:07:15 > 0:07:17# Let's get off the subject
0:07:17 > 0:07:19# Hi, when I'm all grown up
0:07:19 > 0:07:21# I want to rock the stage
0:07:21 > 0:07:25# I want to get older but never age
0:07:25 > 0:07:28# And I've slight obsession with
0:07:28 > 0:07:31# A lazy eyed man named Russell Howard
0:07:31 > 0:07:33# Oh, oh, oh
0:07:33 > 0:07:37# I'm ma put on a show
0:07:37 > 0:07:42# To show you me
0:07:42 > 0:07:45# Let you hear my musical autobiography
0:07:45 > 0:07:46# Oh... #
0:07:46 > 0:07:49I am so pleased, Hannah did so well. It was an amazing performance.
0:07:49 > 0:07:54The whole crowd just settled down straightaway when she sat down.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56You could hear a pin drop,
0:07:56 > 0:08:00everyone was so intrigued with what she had to say through her songs.
0:08:00 > 0:08:06# Oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa. #
0:08:08 > 0:08:11APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:08:28 > 0:08:29Class - wasn't it?
0:08:31 > 0:08:35Yes, I am actually buzzing now.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37I actually like, I am like...
0:08:38 > 0:08:43I am on, what do you call it? Cloud nine, I'm so happy.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47I'm really pleased, Hannah, well done.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50I'm so happy that's over...
0:08:50 > 0:08:52Well, I'm not really, I want to do it all again.
0:08:52 > 0:08:53I want to do it again.
0:08:55 > 0:08:56I knew she'd say that
0:08:56 > 0:08:59because performing on stage is such a great experience,
0:08:59 > 0:09:01but as Hannah found out it can be a scary one.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16Do you know, I used to be such a nervous person when I was younger,
0:09:16 > 0:09:18and now I feel a lot more grown up,
0:09:18 > 0:09:21I feel like I've matured and I've learnt that
0:09:21 > 0:09:23I get more butterflies before I go on stage now
0:09:23 > 0:09:27and I get more excited, so your nerves will go in time,
0:09:27 > 0:09:29but you wouldn't be normal if you didn't get nervous,
0:09:29 > 0:09:31so don't worry about nerves.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33I guess you've just got to feel confident
0:09:33 > 0:09:35that you know your words and you know your lyrics,
0:09:35 > 0:09:36and melodies and stuff,
0:09:36 > 0:09:39so that it can just be like second nature to you
0:09:39 > 0:09:41and you can just go out there and just really perform it.
0:09:41 > 0:09:44Before I go on stage I like to have a little dance,
0:09:44 > 0:09:46just like a complete idiot.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48I will just be doing all these silly moves to myself,
0:09:48 > 0:09:51and everyone's looking at me like "What she doing? She's daft."
0:09:51 > 0:09:53But that's me and that's what helps me.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56When it is time to go on, I walk on and think, "I can do this,"
0:09:56 > 0:10:00positive energy and that's the best thing to get you through your nerves.
0:10:07 > 0:10:11So remember, don't worry if you get butterflies. It's normal.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18Be prepared. Know you can do what you need to do.
0:10:22 > 0:10:24Be positive.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31Next up - another Derry kid who loves to sing,
0:10:31 > 0:10:33it's 15-year-old Eibhin.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38But up until a recent community event,
0:10:38 > 0:10:41his family had never heard him properly perform.
0:10:41 > 0:10:42We were sitting in the audience
0:10:42 > 0:10:44and I was warned not to shout or scream
0:10:44 > 0:10:47- or make an exhibition... - Or all three.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49LAUGHTER
0:10:49 > 0:10:52And the music started.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55I heard the first note and we couldn't speak.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58The music's more sort of me main focus,
0:10:58 > 0:11:01everything else is just sort of...tolerate.
0:11:02 > 0:11:04His school have recognised this focus
0:11:04 > 0:11:07and now any time there's a school show or event -
0:11:07 > 0:11:09Eibhin is the man they ask to take the mic.
0:11:12 > 0:11:13But for this performance...
0:11:13 > 0:11:15he doesn't seem to have done his homework.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20Writing out me words, because I forgot them.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23Eibhin is due on stage in five minutes
0:11:23 > 0:11:24and he's still learning his words!
0:11:24 > 0:11:26This is not good.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29I'll be fine anyway. As soon as I go on stage it will go.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32Won't be as jittery or as jumpy or as pace-y.
0:11:32 > 0:11:35# Oh, it takes every kind of people... #
0:11:35 > 0:11:38When you don't do your homework, people always find out.
0:11:40 > 0:11:42Eibhin hasn't prepared properly and it shows.
0:11:52 > 0:11:53I've got plans for Eibhin,
0:11:53 > 0:11:55but he'll need to improve if he wants to hit the stage
0:11:55 > 0:11:57I've got in mind.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00But first, I've got something to do.
0:12:05 > 0:12:09So, here we are at Hannah's school. I'm about to surprise her.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13She has no idea I'm coming to let her know about her next big gig.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15I haven't been to school in a while, so here goes.
0:12:21 > 0:12:25Hannah's last gig in front of 300 people was a success,
0:12:25 > 0:12:28but I feel this girl needs to raise her game and play to a bigger
0:12:28 > 0:12:32and younger crowd who will really get her style and lyrics.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38I can't wait to tell her what her gig is.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40It's definitely going to be the biggest gig of her life.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47Hello! How are you?
0:12:47 > 0:12:52Sorry to disturb your class, but I'm here to see Hannah.

0:13:03 > 0:13:09Your next big gig. I heard when you played your last gig...
0:13:09 > 0:13:12the people there were a little bit older,
0:13:12 > 0:13:16so they didn't really appreciate the Harry Stiles jokes and stuff.
0:13:16 > 0:13:20- They were a bit ancient, do you know what I mean?- Yeah.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22We've gone and got you another gig
0:13:22 > 0:13:29and it's going to be at CBBC Live on the main stage in Leeds

0:13:57 > 0:13:58What!
0:13:58 > 0:14:02Like... It's actually so surreal.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06Like, it doesn't feel real, it feels like a dream.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09It sounds so cheesy, but it does actually feel like a dream.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18# The moment I wake up
0:14:18 > 0:14:22# Before I put on my make-up
0:14:22 > 0:14:24# I say a little prayer for you... #
0:14:24 > 0:14:28Micaela is a week into her three week schedule to get ready
0:14:28 > 0:14:32to sing in front of 2,000 people at the Grand Vintage Ball.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35The vintage song she's chosen is Say A Little Prayer
0:14:35 > 0:14:38and Glenn is helping her reach the right notes.
0:14:38 > 0:14:39# Please... #
0:14:39 > 0:14:43- Ah, blah, blah, blah, I hate that bit.- What happened?
0:14:43 > 0:14:45Half a note too long
0:14:45 > 0:14:47and it's, like, really difficult to come down from.
0:14:47 > 0:14:51Maybe if you don't put that middle note in? You go...
0:14:51 > 0:14:55- And then go...- OK.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59It's up to you. If you find it easier to have that...
0:14:59 > 0:15:03I can't do wee triplet notes like that, it's kind of difficult.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06# Say I'm in love with you
0:15:06 > 0:15:09# Answer my prayer now, baby... #
0:15:09 > 0:15:12- You know at the end of each line in the verse?- Uh-huh.
0:15:12 > 0:15:14- You do a natural kind of smile anyway.- Uh-huh.
0:15:14 > 0:15:16I'd just accentuate it a tiny bit,
0:15:16 > 0:15:18because the more people see that you're having a good time
0:15:18 > 0:15:21- the more likely they're going to accept that...- OK.
0:15:21 > 0:15:22- That was great.- Thank you.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25But I want to see you do it again with a slightly bigger audience...
0:15:25 > 0:15:26Certainly.
0:15:26 > 0:15:30- Yeah, so I'm going to get your mum and your sister...- OK.- ..to sit in.

0:15:51 > 0:15:52# The moment I wake up... #
0:15:52 > 0:15:54She took everything that I said on board,
0:15:54 > 0:15:56and was a better performance then in front of her mum
0:15:56 > 0:15:59and her sister, you could see she was moving more,
0:15:59 > 0:16:02she was smiling more, and it was just straightaway she took it up.
0:16:02 > 0:16:03# We never will part
0:16:03 > 0:16:05# Oh, I how I love you
0:16:05 > 0:16:08# Together, together, that's how it must be
0:16:08 > 0:16:10# To live without you
0:16:10 > 0:16:15# Would only mean heartbreak for me. #
0:16:16 > 0:16:18She may have impressed her mum and sister,
0:16:18 > 0:16:20but there's still a lot of practice to do
0:16:20 > 0:16:23before she's ready to hit the stage for real.
0:16:23 > 0:16:25That's excellent. I got a shock.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33Hit The Stage isn't just about individual performances,
0:16:33 > 0:16:36I want everyone to work together as a group
0:16:36 > 0:16:39and I have a plan about what we can all do. I hope they like it.
0:16:41 > 0:16:42Hey, guys, it's Katy.
0:16:42 > 0:16:44Sorry I can't I be there with you right now,
0:16:44 > 0:16:45I'm in the studio.
0:16:45 > 0:16:49Now, I've been thinking long and hard about what we can do to include
0:16:49 > 0:16:50everyone's talent.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53And I've decided we can make our own unique version of
0:16:53 > 0:16:55an iconic song by a local band.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58The song is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
0:16:58 > 0:17:01and I really want you to put your own unique twist on it.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05So I am super, super excited, and I hope you are too.
0:17:05 > 0:17:07This is a big challenge,
0:17:07 > 0:17:10so it's going to take such a lot of hard work - so get to it.
0:17:10 > 0:17:12Good luck and I'll see you soon.
0:17:12 > 0:17:16The plan is for the group to record a cover version of Chasing Cars
0:17:16 > 0:17:18and make a music video that you'll be able to watch on
0:17:18 > 0:17:20the CBBC website.
0:17:20 > 0:17:24But I'm not sure my choice of song has gone down a storm with everyone.
0:17:25 > 0:17:28You all know what the tune is... What's the initial reactions?
0:17:28 > 0:17:30It always is playing
0:17:30 > 0:17:32when someone gets put out of the X Factor or something.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34Everybody keeps saying that they hear it all the time,
0:17:34 > 0:17:36so it's played out.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38It's just a challenge. Come on, it's not...
0:17:38 > 0:17:41Do you not think you can do anything with it?
0:17:41 > 0:17:43Like, it has it has potential.
0:17:45 > 0:17:48This is what I think... Snow Patrol.
0:17:48 > 0:17:49It has potential.
0:17:51 > 0:17:53The whole point of this is
0:17:53 > 0:17:55we don't want it to sound like Snow Patrol,
0:17:55 > 0:17:57we want it to sound like you.
0:17:57 > 0:17:58Wise words, Jenny,
0:17:58 > 0:18:00the group will now go away and work out
0:18:00 > 0:18:03how to make their own version of the song.
0:18:08 > 0:18:11You may have noticed that Micaela loves to dress up,
0:18:11 > 0:18:15and that's all part of performing, so with just two days to go
0:18:15 > 0:18:19before she hits the stage, she's on the hunt for a classic outfit.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27There's so much choice, what is a girl to wear?
0:18:31 > 0:18:32OK, do we like the bling,
0:18:32 > 0:18:35or are we going for something a bit more subtle, a bit more classy?
0:18:35 > 0:18:37- Ah...- Or shall we just try on loads and see what...?
0:18:37 > 0:18:40- Try on and see what... - Yep.
0:18:51 > 0:18:55- Yep, that's a definite possibility. - Yeah.
0:18:57 > 0:18:59- No, it's not pretty in pink. - No.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02- It's far from it. - It's uncomfortable.
0:19:05 > 0:19:06It's not you.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08- No. - It's so not you.
0:19:08 > 0:19:09Hello.
0:19:09 > 0:19:10Oh, that's pretty too.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12- I really do like this. - That's pretty.
0:19:12 > 0:19:16Oh, my gosh it's gorgeous.
0:19:16 > 0:19:17Isn't that so pretty on her?
0:19:17 > 0:19:20I'm just getting that wee gut feeling now.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22- Is that the one you feel...? - Mm-hm.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24Oh, that's it, that's the one there.
0:19:24 > 0:19:26Is that the one?
0:19:26 > 0:19:28Yes, big time, that is the one.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31It is stunning on her.
0:19:31 > 0:19:32I really love that.
0:19:39 > 0:19:44In just two days' time Micaela will be hitting the stage.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47But for Eibhin, it's time to find out what City Of Culture event

0:19:50 > 0:19:51I love his voice,
0:19:51 > 0:19:55and I think the time is right for him to step up to the next level.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00I've arranged for him to meet local music legend Phil Coulter.
0:20:00 > 0:20:04Phil has performed all over the world with some of the biggest stars
0:20:04 > 0:20:07and he might give Eibhin the opportunity to sing in
0:20:07 > 0:20:10his major City of Culture concert
0:20:10 > 0:20:14alongside another local music legend - Glee star Damian McGinty.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21As you might have heard, Phil expects pretty high standards,
0:20:21 > 0:20:23that's why he's getting Damian to do it.
0:20:23 > 0:20:27So... And obviously yourself, obviously.
0:20:27 > 0:20:28LAUGHTER
0:20:28 > 0:20:29No pressure.
0:20:30 > 0:20:32But because he has such high standards,
0:20:32 > 0:20:35he has requested that he has a rehearsal with you.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38- How do you feel about it? - Ahhhh!
0:20:44 > 0:20:47- Derry's answer to Simon Cowell. - Yes.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57he knows what it takes to make a life out of music.
0:20:57 > 0:20:59This might be hard for you, but I want you to,
0:20:59 > 0:21:00just off the bat without any piano,
0:21:00 > 0:21:02I want you to sing me something right now.
0:21:05 > 0:21:07OK, any requests?

0:21:10 > 0:21:13with fluidity and in tune, preferably.
0:21:13 > 0:21:15Preferably.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25# Many years ago
0:21:26 > 0:21:34# Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
0:21:34 > 0:21:37# But I got lost the time or two
0:21:37 > 0:21:41# Wipe my brow and kept pushing through
0:21:41 > 0:21:48# I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you. #
0:21:48 > 0:21:51OK. You probably pitched that a bit high.
0:21:51 > 0:21:53It was OK.
0:21:53 > 0:21:56No, it wasn't OK because you were a bit flat on the top,
0:21:56 > 0:21:59- because you pitched it too high. - Yeah, OK.
0:21:59 > 0:22:01And that's something which you'll have to learn.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03Not only about pitching the right key,
0:22:03 > 0:22:06but when it's not right, it's not right.
0:22:06 > 0:22:10Did I hear that on a previous airing that you forgot your words?
0:22:10 > 0:22:12I forget, yeah.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15You see, that, at the level we're talking about,
0:22:15 > 0:22:20the level that you want to aspire to - that is unforgivable.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47if you're good enough to carry that shot through
