0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hi, I'm Katie B and this is Hit The Stage.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11In this series I've taken a group of kids who all love music,

0:00:11 > 0:00:15and given them the chance to perform on some of the biggest stages.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19We've seen a budding DJ go from playing his mum and dad's parties

0:00:19 > 0:00:21to rocking the decks at a major festival.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24A singer go from singing hymns in church to performing to sell-out

0:00:24 > 0:00:28crowds, and a songwriter afraid to play her songs in public

0:00:28 > 0:00:31to playing to an audience of thousands.

0:00:31 > 0:00:32In this final episode,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34we see Darrel get the chance

0:00:34 > 0:00:36to play his own composition to a big crowd.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Brianna introduces me to the harp,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42and the whole group come together for a very special finale.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Are you ready to Hit The Stage? We are!

0:00:45 > 0:00:47CHEERING

0:00:52 > 0:00:55MUSIC: "Lights on" by Katy B

0:00:55 > 0:00:58I've been lucky enough to make a life out of doing something

0:00:58 > 0:01:01that I love - singing and performing.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03You may even know some of my hit singles.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10And now I'm in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Why am I here? Well, it's simple.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15This year, the city is the UK's first ever City Of Culture,

0:01:15 > 0:01:19which means there's loads of massive music events happening

0:01:19 > 0:01:20all year round.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23And I've been helping some local kids to hit the stage.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31I'm not doing it alone - I've got two local musicians

0:01:31 > 0:01:33to help out when I'm not around -

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Glenn, who loves hitting the stage himself

0:01:36 > 0:01:38when he's rocking out with his band.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39The spark of creativity they have

0:01:39 > 0:01:42really reignites the spark you have

0:01:42 > 0:01:44so I'm really looking forward to the eight months,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46and seeing where this is going to go.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49And Jenny, who likes to take things a bit more slowly

0:01:49 > 0:01:52when she's teaching students how to play the harp or sing.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56It's really inspiring to think that these kids really have

0:01:56 > 0:01:57so much potential.

0:01:57 > 0:02:02So I'm really, really excited to see what they're going to come up with.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Last time we met Darrel, who's obsessed with playing

0:02:04 > 0:02:08and composing his own tunes on the old family piano.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12Well, I'd like to become a famous composer, going round the world.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16'I was so impressed with his playing, I arranged for him to meet

0:02:16 > 0:02:19'Neil Cowley, who is the City Of Culture's musician in residence.'

0:02:19 > 0:02:23I'm already liking your hand position, that's very good. So...

0:02:23 > 0:02:26'Neil has played on some of the biggest hits of this century,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28'including Adele's Rolling In The Deep.'

0:02:31 > 0:02:34And he thinks Darrel has what it takes to go all the way.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37You've got everything within your grasp, technically,

0:02:37 > 0:02:41for you to do exactly what you want for the rest of your life.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43I'm telling you, you really have.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47'The only thing holding Darrel back was his schoolwork.'

0:02:47 > 0:02:50You've this weird idea that you can go into your exam

0:02:50 > 0:02:52- and pass it. - THEY TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:02:52 > 0:02:54I don't have.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56'But he promised me he'd try harder.'

0:02:57 > 0:03:00And now a few months have passed, his school report is in.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03What?

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Look what came in today - can you guess what this is?

0:03:06 > 0:03:09It's my report, school report.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Would you like to read it?

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Aye, I'll have to, I guess.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17If you look at your maths - he's a very good comment there because

0:03:17 > 0:03:21in January when I was talking to that teacher, he says that you've

0:03:21 > 0:03:24a mental block when it comes to maths, and now he's saying now

0:03:24 > 0:03:26that he thinks you're going to get it.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28But I kept at you with your maths.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Katy B - what did she tell you? She told you, "Darrel, you need it

0:03:32 > 0:03:33"and you don't want to do what I done,"

0:03:33 > 0:03:36where she had to go to night classes and do it later.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39She says you've got to do it now. And your music's very good.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42It's first place in music, so that's very good.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Well, the report's very good and you're to keep up now the work.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48That's a really positive report. If Darrel keeps this up, it looks like

0:03:48 > 0:03:52he'll pass his maths, and there's even a reward for his efforts.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54- There's a fiver now.- Oh, thank you.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58If your grades improve, I will double that fiver.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Oh, what about the grand piano?

0:04:00 > 0:04:02I think that might be pushing it, Darrel.

0:04:02 > 0:04:03No grand piano, no.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12My Hit The Stage super-group are hard at work on their cover

0:04:12 > 0:04:15of local band Snow Patrol's classic song Chasing Cars.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21'When I first announced the song, it didn't go down so well.'

0:04:21 > 0:04:24I decided we can make our own unique version

0:04:24 > 0:04:26of an iconic song by a local band.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30But by encouraging everyone to get creative...

0:04:30 > 0:04:33I could make the beats along with the piano.

0:04:33 > 0:04:34..and embracing new ideas...

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Can we make the song a little bit faster?

0:04:38 > 0:04:40..they turned things around, and the group are nearly ready to

0:04:40 > 0:04:42record their own unique version.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45SHE SINGS

0:04:45 > 0:04:48A key member of the group is 12-year-old Brianna.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Brianna is a pro on the latest computer games.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55I really need to get this - oh!

0:04:55 > 0:04:58But when it comes to the harp, she's a total beginner.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02The harp is a much-loved Irish string instrument that

0:05:02 > 0:05:04dates back at least 1,400 years.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Brianna loves the sound that it makes.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11The harp is a beautiful instrument and, um, plus it's quite soft

0:05:11 > 0:05:15and delicate and doesn't bang the eardrums.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17But that peace and quiet doesn't last long

0:05:17 > 0:05:19when you have a dog around the house.

0:05:21 > 0:05:22His name is Stitch.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24He's a wee bundle of chaos.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32He's eating the grass again.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35I know, I think he should have been a sheep.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38'Hit The Stage isn't just about being the very best -

0:05:38 > 0:05:40'it's about loving music too.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42'Brianna may be only starting to play,

0:05:42 > 0:05:45'but that won't stop her being part of the Hit The Stage gang.'

0:05:47 > 0:05:49'And like everyone else in the group, I think Brianna could really

0:05:49 > 0:05:52'benefit from having a performance to aim for.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53'But as a beginner,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56'I know she could struggle to play in front of a big crowd.'

0:05:56 > 0:05:58It would be kind of nerve-racking

0:05:58 > 0:06:02but I suppose it really depends on how big it is, technically,

0:06:02 > 0:06:06and if it's a small crowd, I'd be OK with that.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09'I know that Brianna's worried about performing before she's ready,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12'so I'm going to give her as much advice as I can.'

0:06:14 > 0:06:18I don't get, how can you handle the nerve of going up on stage,

0:06:18 > 0:06:20in front of thousands, maybe millions of people?

0:06:20 > 0:06:22I don't get...I can't do that.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26I don't get how someone can gather up the courage to do that.

0:06:26 > 0:06:27Well, the thing is, you start off

0:06:27 > 0:06:30as you're playing to, like, five people.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33And then the next concert you do, you're playing to ten

0:06:33 > 0:06:36and then the next, you're playing to 50.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39After a while, it's building up, building up.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42It wasn't like my first ever gig was to, like, 80,000 people.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45That would have definitely freaked me out.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49You're always going to be a little bit, like, little bit scared,

0:06:49 > 0:06:51but - you know, you can't let that stop you,

0:06:51 > 0:06:54you've got to kind of go for it anyway, you know?

0:06:54 > 0:06:57So have you got a little harp here

0:06:57 > 0:06:59that I can hear you play some...?

0:07:01 > 0:07:03- It's upstairs?- Yeah.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18So what are you going to be playing?

0:07:18 > 0:07:21Um, I forget what it's called, it's Southern Wind or The Western Wind.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28'It's so exciting learning a new instrument

0:07:28 > 0:07:30'but it's lots of hard work too.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33'I think if Brianna had a big performance to work towards,

0:07:33 > 0:07:35'it could really help her focus,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38'so I'll work with Jenny to cook up a real surprise.'

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Well, I've never had anyone play the harp to me before, Brianna,

0:07:42 > 0:07:45so thank you very much. It's lovely.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50'But first, Brianna has a solo to sort out in the group session.'

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Literally at the start, we were thinking maybe, like,

0:07:53 > 0:07:55just the harp doing that wee riff at the very beginning

0:07:55 > 0:07:58and then yous come in with a couple of those phrases, yeah?

0:07:58 > 0:08:00- Let's get cracking, then. - Cool. OK, Brianna?

0:08:00 > 0:08:02SHE PLAYS INTRO TO CHASING CARS

0:08:05 > 0:08:08I was nervous about having to start the song because it's...

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Well, if you screw up, you screw up the whole song.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15It's a big responsibility to start the group's song,

0:08:15 > 0:08:17but I know she can do it.

0:08:21 > 0:08:2414-year-old pianist Darrel loves his music.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28He spends hours making up his own tunes, but composing your own music

0:08:28 > 0:08:31isn't easy when you can't even keep your piano in key.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33IT PLAYS OUT OF TUNE

0:08:33 > 0:08:36But amazing mum Sharon has a massive surprise

0:08:36 > 0:08:37in store for her son.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41She's pushed the family budget to the limit and come to the rescue.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45I'm waiting on Darrel and Tyreece to come back from the beach.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48They think I'm away shopping to buy clothes, but I've went

0:08:48 > 0:08:50and I've invested in a good piano for him.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54He doesn't know that he's getting it, so I'm just going to surprise him.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57And I've been thinking about it this past while.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00When Darrel comes back now, he's actually,

0:09:00 > 0:09:03I think he could faint, even, for the shock of seeing this new piano.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08I can't believe she has managed to keep this a secret.

0:09:08 > 0:09:09I love a good surprise.

0:09:09 > 0:09:10That's them.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Well, how did the beach go?

0:09:15 > 0:09:17Was it good? Did you enjoy the beach?

0:09:17 > 0:09:20Oh! Aye!

0:09:20 > 0:09:23This can't be real. No, no, no, this isn't real.

0:09:28 > 0:09:29How'd you get that?

0:09:29 > 0:09:31No, this is impossible.

0:09:35 > 0:09:36It's in tune and all!

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Even Tyreece is liking the sound of this.

0:09:55 > 0:09:56So shocked.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Like really, like, it is a dream come true.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02I'm amazed that me mum's given me this - really happy,

0:10:02 > 0:10:04I really appreciate it,

0:10:04 > 0:10:07and, like, best thing in the world to happen.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12Just time for one last goodbye to his old faithful.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18'I will miss it in a way, but in a way, I won't miss it.'

0:10:18 > 0:10:20Goodbye.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22'Actually - I was in on the secret,

0:10:22 > 0:10:26'and I've got another surprise in store for Darrel.'

0:10:26 > 0:10:31Hi, Darrel. Now, I know you've been really enjoying working with

0:10:31 > 0:10:32Neil Cowley, and you know what?

0:10:32 > 0:10:36Neil has really enjoyed working with you, and he's very impressed.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39Neil and his band have a performance coming up, and guess what?

0:10:39 > 0:10:42He wants you to join him and play your own composition.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Are you serious? Oh, yes!

0:10:45 > 0:10:48I'm so excited for you, Darrel, best of luck.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50I can't believe this is happening to me.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Like, you get to play with on stage with him for a proper performance.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58I'm really shocked. I'll have to do masses of practice.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02It's amazing how something so simple like getting a new instrument

0:11:02 > 0:11:04can really fire your creativity.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08And with a brand spanking new piano under the stairs, I can't wait to

0:11:08 > 0:11:12hear what Darrel is going to come up with for his big performance.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Since I met Brianna, she's been practising harp every day

0:11:20 > 0:11:23and I've made sure that Jenny is on hand to help her get to grips

0:11:23 > 0:11:25with this tricky instrument.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29- Oh, is it a blister?- It was.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33If I haven't been practising a while, my fingers will get really sore

0:11:33 > 0:11:36but you just have to keep practising through it.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38- Unfortunately. - It's just a wee sting,

0:11:38 > 0:11:42we'll get through it, it's just sore for that wee bit.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45'If you're getting blisters on your fingers, it means you must be

0:11:45 > 0:11:48'really working hard. I'm impressed.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52'And I think it's time for all that hard work to be rewarded.'

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Hi, Brianna. Hi, Stitch. How are you?

0:11:55 > 0:11:58'I've lined Brianna up a great opportunity to play

0:11:58 > 0:12:00'solo at her very own harp recital.'

0:12:02 > 0:12:04How do you feel?

0:12:04 > 0:12:05Nervous...

0:12:05 > 0:12:10Very surprising. Can't believe it. Um, very, very happy.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13- Oh, good.- Don't cry, you'll make me cry.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17This is a big deal for Brianna. It won't be easy, but Jenny will be

0:12:17 > 0:12:21working closely with her on the pieces she'll have to play.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Right now, though, she's taking her harp

0:12:23 > 0:12:26and joining the Hit The Stage group as they hit the studio.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47After all their practising, the group are ready

0:12:47 > 0:12:50to record their version of Chasing Cars.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51Ready when you are!

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Recording a song professionally takes a lot of effort.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Everyone has to record their part separately,

0:12:59 > 0:13:01and the engineer will then mix all the pieces together

0:13:01 > 0:13:02into the final track.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10I know Brianna was nervous about this, but she's doing brilliantly.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14It's my first time in a recording studio and, well,

0:13:14 > 0:13:17it was a lot harder than I expected.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22I love being in the studio, it's where I feel most at home

0:13:22 > 0:13:25but if you aren't used to it, it can be tough.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29I'm trying. I'm really trying. OK.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Hannah's used to playing live, you know,

0:13:31 > 0:13:34which is a totally different world to the recording world.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36If your nerves switch on when you're recording,

0:13:36 > 0:13:38it's very, very hard to get your part right.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41It's so hard. No, I don't like it.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46All the instruments get recorded first

0:13:46 > 0:13:49so that the engineer can start to build the track.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52I feel ready to go!

0:13:52 > 0:13:54With all the instruments recorded,

0:13:54 > 0:13:57it's time for the singers to step up to the mic.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00# Remind me... #

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Erm, I'm not sure that's the way it goes.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06On your own's easier.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09But being in a group's sort of...better - more fun.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13SHE LAUGHS

0:14:13 > 0:14:15I really can't wait, I'm all excited,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18it's like my first proper time using one of...whatever that is.

0:14:18 > 0:14:22# If I lay here

0:14:22 > 0:14:25# If I just lay here... #

0:14:25 > 0:14:28In a recording studio you just feel so natural and you just...

0:14:28 > 0:14:31You can just let go and it's an amazing thing to do, like.

0:14:31 > 0:14:40# Would you lay with me and just forget the world? #

0:14:42 > 0:14:46With all instruments and vocals recorded, the DJs are in the studio

0:14:46 > 0:14:49bringing their own unique sounds into the mix.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51I can't wait to hear the finished track.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56Have you ever thought about how to really listen to music?

0:14:56 > 0:15:01I love listening to music at home, on my own, or with my friends.

0:15:01 > 0:15:02It's powerful,

0:15:02 > 0:15:05it can make you happy, sad or even make you want to dance.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09But have you ever wondered what different parts make up a record?

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Try breaking them down - it's fun.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14First of all there's the beats, the drums,

0:15:14 > 0:15:16which you should know very well because it's related to

0:15:16 > 0:15:20one of the sounds that you know best - your own beating heart.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Then there's the melody and the singing.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Put all three together and that's when the magic happens.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49With only a couple of weeks to go

0:15:49 > 0:15:51before he supports Neil Cowley on tour,

0:15:51 > 0:15:55Darrel is busy putting the finishing touches to his composition.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57I want to really impress Neil,

0:15:57 > 0:16:02show him that I'm really putting in the hard work for this big gig.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04Darrel uses the latest computer software to

0:16:04 > 0:16:07write down the music he's composed in his head.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10I have more or less done it now, actually.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13So I'm going to go down to the piano and try it out.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18I think getting a new piano has really helped improve

0:16:18 > 0:16:22Darrel's skills, and in just a couple of weeks' time, he'll be

0:16:22 > 0:16:25playing his own tune in front of a crowd for the very first time.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Really excited about doing it. Not even nervous, just really excited.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36I can't wait to be sitting at that piano and just playing

0:16:36 > 0:16:39away in front of a big massive audience, like. It's so exciting.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Ever since Brianna found out about her very own recital,

0:16:45 > 0:16:47she's been busy practising with Jenny

0:16:47 > 0:16:49to learn as many pieces as she can.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54She's come such a long way in such a short period of time.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00And she's now ready to perform in front of a crowd

0:17:00 > 0:17:01for the very first time.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06Even though I am nerv-cited - nervous and excited,

0:17:06 > 0:17:11I am confident that everything will go well. I can't wait.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14She'll be playing in a beautiful venue in the city centre

0:17:14 > 0:17:18in front of an invited audience of family members and friends,

0:17:18 > 0:17:20including her Hit The Stage pals.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Oh, and Stitch is there for support too.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24Will we give Brianna a big clap?

0:17:30 > 0:17:33STITCH BARKS

0:17:52 > 0:17:53APPLAUSE

0:17:53 > 0:17:55STITCH BARKS

0:18:04 > 0:18:07All the hard work has been worth it. Brianna sounds amazing.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Everyone loves it. It's an emotional moment for Brianna.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36After working hard for months and you finally accomplish a goal,

0:18:36 > 0:18:39it is something...amazing.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48With their cover version recorded,

0:18:48 > 0:18:51it's time for the group to film their very own music video.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56We are on our way to Belfast

0:18:56 > 0:18:59to record the music video in front of the green screen

0:18:59 > 0:19:03- and I think we're really excited, aren't we, Brianna?- Yep.

0:19:03 > 0:19:04Really looking forward to it.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07They're heading to one of the biggest TV studios

0:19:07 > 0:19:10in Northern Ireland, to film against the massive green screen.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13This is how the stars like to record many of their videos.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16It sounds really exciting, like, you see all these celebrities

0:19:16 > 0:19:20and behind the scenes in their music videos and it looks really cool.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24And for anyone wondering why it's green, Brianna has all the answers.

0:19:26 > 0:19:27Why's it green?

0:19:27 > 0:19:30Well, green's a reflective colour

0:19:30 > 0:19:34and any image or any texture can be reflected against it

0:19:34 > 0:19:36to make it look as if it's like...

0:19:36 > 0:19:39something there's but it's not.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41Could it be a blue screen, do you know what I mean?

0:19:41 > 0:19:44- Why does it have to be green? - You can get blue ones.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Could it be, like, a purple screen?

0:19:47 > 0:19:49- No.- Why not purple? - It's not reflective,

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- you can only get blue, green or white.- That's me told.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Here's how it works.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59Everyone mimes their parts in front of the camera

0:19:59 > 0:20:02and through the magic of computers, the background will be

0:20:02 > 0:20:04replaced with all sorts of cool stuff.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09If you're going to star in your very own music video,

0:20:09 > 0:20:13it's important to look your best, and even the boys need make-up.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18You need to get your make-up on so you don't shine.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20The cameras in the studio are really strong.

0:20:20 > 0:20:21That looks lovely.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25Make-up done, it's time to get down to work. Action!

0:20:32 > 0:20:35It was a bit weird what we had to do - repeat it and repeat it

0:20:35 > 0:20:39and repeat it. But, no, it's good, like, but it was a bit weird.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50Darrel has left the bright lights of the studio behind -

0:20:50 > 0:20:53he's in Lancaster for his performance supporting Neil Cowley.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Oh, look, there you are.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58There it is.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01- It's becoming real now, isn't it? - It really is.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03And it's time for his sound check

0:21:03 > 0:21:05to make sure everything is ready for tonight's gig.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15How you doing, Darrel? How you doing?

0:21:15 > 0:21:17Hi, girls, how are you doing?

0:21:17 > 0:21:20- All right? Nice to see you. Nice to see you.- You too.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30Tonight will be the first time a crowd will ever have heard

0:21:30 > 0:21:34one of Darrel's own compositions, and it seems Neil is impressed.

0:21:43 > 0:21:44Wow!

0:21:46 > 0:21:48Darrel, you know what? Your timing's really nice

0:21:48 > 0:21:52and you're fluid and just, you know, you exude something.

0:21:52 > 0:21:57It's really amazing. I'm really blown away, I really am. That's great.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03With the venue filling up for tonight's sold-out concert,

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Darrel is raring to go.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09I'm going to kill this audience.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13They're going to go off the seats and I am going to kill the audience.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20But one look at the crowd, and it's a different story.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23Five minutes to the gig. I'm feeling nervous.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Really nervous.

0:22:25 > 0:22:26Me stomach's feeling sore,

0:22:26 > 0:22:29I feel sick.

0:22:29 > 0:22:33I feel really like I'm going to make mistakes, but...

0:22:33 > 0:22:35Hello, mate. You all right?

0:22:35 > 0:22:36- Nervous.- You nervous?- Yeah.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Come on, give us a hug.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40You're going to be fine.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43- Has it got to you, finally? - Yeah.- It was going to.

0:22:43 > 0:22:4620 minutes before, I was all right. Now, five minutes before...

0:22:46 > 0:22:49But this is normal. This is natural, this is the way it should be.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51- Is it? - Yeah, you need a bit of nerves.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Cos if you go out there all bolshie and confident it won't be quite

0:22:54 > 0:22:56the same performance - you need a little bit of nerves.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58- Good.- Going to nail it.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02Five minutes, Miss Piggy. "Five minutes, Miss Piggy!"

0:23:02 > 0:23:03I was worried there for a second.

0:25:21 > 0:25:22Happy flippin' days!

0:25:24 > 0:25:28It's a big memory he's got now. It's a big tag in his brain saying,

0:25:28 > 0:25:31"I did that, I achieved that, I could do that again."

0:25:31 > 0:25:33I bet he's addicted.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36In fact, he loves it so much,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39at the end of the night he doesn't want to leave.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45Well, that's nearly it - 13 kids, nine months,

0:25:45 > 0:25:49and hours and hours of practice, but it's all been worth it.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22It just shows you, right, I play... it's literally a bit of wood

0:26:22 > 0:26:24and it shows you how far it brought me.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29# On our own... #

0:26:29 > 0:26:32We're all part of each others' experience and we can look back
