0:01:49 > 0:01:51Fruit jumble!

0:01:51 > 0:01:52TOGETHER: Mmm!

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Delicious, huh? But before we get started on the cooking,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58we've got to do something really, really important.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Do you know what it is?

0:02:00 > 0:02:02ALL: Wash your hands!

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Got it, we've got to wash our hands, of course.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Come on, everyone, let's get going.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14# Roll up your sleeves Give your hands a wash

0:02:14 > 0:02:17# With slippy-dippy soap Splish, splash, splosh

0:02:17 > 0:02:20# Have you done your hands Washed and dried

0:02:20 > 0:02:23# Sleeves rolled up, apron tied

0:02:23 > 0:02:26# What can you do? I Can Cook! #

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Right, let's get started on our fruit jumble.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35The first ingredient we need is some plums.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Plums can come in all different shapes and sizes but the ones

0:02:39 > 0:02:42we're got here are small and round like little bouncing balls.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45- What colour are they, Ivy?- Red. - Lovely red colour.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48- I wonder what colour they are inside, shall we find out?- Yes!

0:02:48 > 0:02:50To do that we're going to use a table knife.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Some knives can be sharp, can't they, team?

0:02:54 > 0:02:58- So you do have to be very... - Careful!

0:02:58 > 0:03:02But a table knife is the kind of knife you're used to using at home,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05so it's fine to use. We'll move these two to the side,

0:03:05 > 0:03:09and we're going to hold the plum like this, and put the knife into it

0:03:09 > 0:03:11until we hit the stone.

0:03:11 > 0:03:16Then we're going to walk the knife around the plum, there we go.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Round there, like that. There we go.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Like going around the world?

0:03:22 > 0:03:26Yes, we're going to cut around it like it's a plum planet.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27THEY GIGGLE

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Keep your plums on the mat, cut through till you can feel the stone.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- Yes, I can feel it.- I got it! - Take it all the way round,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37you should have a line all the way round your plum.

0:03:37 > 0:03:42Next, we're going to twist the plum but we do the twist, like this!

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Do the twist, we do the twist.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48We do the twist, we do the twist!

0:03:48 > 0:03:52Fantastic, now we're going to do the twist with the plum.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56To do that, we need to hold the plum and we twist it like this.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02You can do it, keep going, you're nearly there!

0:04:02 > 0:04:05- Yes!- Yeah!

0:04:05 > 0:04:09Next, we need to cut both of these halves into two more pieces,

0:04:09 > 0:04:12so put them down there, like that, and then we cut the plum down

0:04:12 > 0:04:17the middle, like that, until they look like two little ladybird wings.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21Then we are going to cut the other one, as well.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26Cut around the stone and then we twist it apart, like this.

0:04:29 > 0:04:34There we go, Now we need to dig our fingers under this stone here

0:04:34 > 0:04:36and twist it out.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40There it is. All right, let's carry on with the other two plums.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44Look at these plums, they are so red inside.

0:04:44 > 0:04:49We need to take these plums and put them into our dish.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- I've got a lot on my hands. - I look like I've got monster hands!

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Me, too.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01Shall we give our hands a wipe? OK, ready for the next part?

0:05:01 > 0:05:05- Yes.- The next step is to add some orange juice to our plums.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09This is going to make a really lovely, fruity sauce.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13Can you do the fruity dance, like this?

0:05:13 > 0:05:18Fruity, fruity, fruity, fruity fruity, fruity, fruity, fruity!

0:05:18 > 0:05:21You're a good fruity dancer. I think it's about time

0:05:21 > 0:05:24we added some fruity juice to our fruity plums.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27We need to measure out one tablespoon of orange juice

0:05:27 > 0:05:31so we put the spoon into the cup and we tip a load to fill it up.

0:05:31 > 0:05:36We put one in there, like that.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39And that's all the orange juice you need.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Next we're going to add a tablespoonful

0:05:42 > 0:05:46of yummy, runny honey. I love honey.

0:05:46 > 0:05:51Bring the jar over to the dish, and drizzle it all over the plums.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Look at that. Everyone go, drizzle, drizzle, drizzle.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Drizzle, drizzle, drizzle.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00When you've done that we want to mix the plums with the honey

0:06:00 > 0:06:05and the orange juice. Mix, mix, mix, and you can mix with us as well.

0:06:05 > 0:06:10You can get your dish and spoon and go, mix, mix, mix!

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Now that's the fruity part of our recipe done,

0:06:15 > 0:06:20I wonder what ingredient we are going to need next in our recipe?

0:06:20 > 0:06:24What's next? Well, let us see, if you can guess what it could be.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29So, we've got some bread,

0:06:29 > 0:06:31some ham,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34and a glass of milk.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36What would you use for our fruit jumble?

0:06:36 > 0:06:40I'll give you some clues and you can try and guess what it might be.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45The special ingredient is something that you can slice.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49You can't slice a glass of milk, can you?

0:06:49 > 0:06:51So we can take that one away. There we go.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Here's another clue for you.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57The special ingredient is something we can slice

0:06:57 > 0:07:00but also something we can make into toast.

0:07:00 > 0:07:05Well, you can slice ham but you can't make ham into toast, can you?

0:07:05 > 0:07:07I've never done that before.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Let's take that one away as well, which leaves us with bread.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13We're going to need some lovely bread

0:07:13 > 0:07:17for our fruit jumble and I went to find some.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21HORN BEEPS

0:07:23 > 0:07:26I've come to Newcastle to meet my friend, Ian the Baker,

0:07:26 > 0:07:29who is going to tell me how bread is made.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33- You've got flour, sour dough, yeast, salt and water.- Uh-huh.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36And we mix them together.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Once it's been really well mixed,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Ian kneads it to spread the yeast and make it all stick together.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46And when you've go the dough really tight, you elongate it,

0:07:46 > 0:07:51roll it out like that, and then we put it into the bread tins.

0:07:51 > 0:07:56Our dough has been put into this big warm room called the prover,

0:07:56 > 0:08:00and the yeast has made the dough rise up.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Then it just goes into the oven to bake for about 45 minutes.

0:08:03 > 0:08:08What do we do with the bread now that it has cooled down, Ian?

0:08:08 > 0:08:10What we've got to do is slice it.

0:08:17 > 0:08:22Wow, this bread is going to be perfect for our fruit jumble.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24- Thanks very much, Ian.- Pleasure.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27I love the smell of freshly baked bread.

0:08:27 > 0:08:32So we've got one slice of bread here, and we are going to cut it.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35- So is everyone ready to do some more cutting?- Yes.- Yes.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38OK. So, put your hand on one side of the bread

0:08:38 > 0:08:42and use your table knife to cut a line down this, like that,

0:08:42 > 0:08:45if you can't cut through the crusts, that's OK,

0:08:45 > 0:08:49as you can just pare them with your fingers.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Put the piece of bread back together, like it's one piece,

0:08:53 > 0:08:57and then we're going to turn the whole slice of bread

0:08:57 > 0:09:00upside down, like this. Look at that.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Then we are going to cut it again, so put your hand there

0:09:03 > 0:09:07and then cut, cut, cut, and if you don't cut all the way

0:09:07 > 0:09:11through the crust we just give it a little rip.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Now we need to do two slices the other way,

0:09:13 > 0:09:18so we turn the bread round, like that, and then cut down that side.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22Then move your hand over a little bit further,

0:09:22 > 0:09:24and cut down a bit more.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28It doesn't matter if they're not perfect.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Are we all ready for the next part?

0:09:31 > 0:09:32ALL: Yes!

0:09:32 > 0:09:37Now we are going to put all of our bread pieces into this butter

0:09:37 > 0:09:40- that I've already melted for you. - I've got lots.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44- And then bring your bowl over to you, on your mat.- Yeah.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Now we're going to get really messy!

0:09:47 > 0:09:50ALL: Let's get messy!

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Everyone, put your hands in the melted butter

0:09:52 > 0:09:55with the bread and get them all buttery.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Jake, what's the bread doing to the butter?

0:09:57 > 0:10:00It's getting sticked on.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04It's sucking it all up like a sponge, isn't it?

0:10:04 > 0:10:05It's going like this.

0:10:05 > 0:10:06SHE SLURPS

0:10:06 > 0:10:09Everyone, who can do a big slurp? Ready?

0:10:09 > 0:10:12THEY SLURP

0:10:12 > 0:10:15- I can't even do it. - You can, do that again.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17HE PUFFS

0:10:17 > 0:10:21- Ha-ha, so, Neelie, what colour has the bread gone?- Yellow.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23That's right, it has.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27Next, we are going to take some of this lovely sugar,

0:10:27 > 0:10:30but it's not the normal kind of sugar you might be used to.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34It's called Demerara sugar and we're going to use some but not all.

0:10:34 > 0:10:39So make sure you leave a little bit of sugar in your bowls for later on.

0:10:39 > 0:10:45Now, we need to put all this lovely bread on top of our plums.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- Oh, look at that. It's like burying treasure.- Yeah, you're right.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Last of all, we're going to take the rest of the Demerara sugar

0:10:54 > 0:10:58and sprinkle it on top of the bread. Ready? Sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02- All done.- Finished! - Finished.- Finished.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04And that is it. You did it, everyone.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08You put all of the ingredients together for your fruit jumble

0:11:08 > 0:11:10and you did it all by yourself.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Now it's time to put them in the oven.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17But remember, ovens are hot,

0:11:17 > 0:11:21so don't go near, ask a grown-up to help you here.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26# Now we've cooked with you And had lots of fun
