0:03:09 > 0:03:12GIGGLING

0:03:12 > 0:03:17What do you think we're going to need next in this recipe?

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Let's put you to the test.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Today's ingredient for you to guess.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25What do you think it's going to be?

0:03:25 > 0:03:26GIGGLING

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Let me give you some clues.

0:03:29 > 0:03:34The missing ingredient might remind you of ice cream, so could it be...?

0:03:34 > 0:03:37An ice cream van?!

0:03:37 > 0:03:40We're not going to eat an ice cream van, are we?

0:03:40 > 0:03:46The missing ingredient is brown, so could it be...?

0:03:46 > 0:03:47Roar!

0:03:47 > 0:03:48No!

0:03:48 > 0:03:51We can't eat a teddy bear, can we?

0:03:51 > 0:03:54The missing ingredient is brown,

0:03:54 > 0:03:57and it has something to do with ice cream.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59I'll give you one more clue -

0:03:59 > 0:04:04sometime's it's the flavour of custard. Mmm.

0:04:04 > 0:04:05So, could it be...?

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Do you know what they are?

0:04:08 > 0:04:11No? Well, let me explain.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13These are called vanilla bean pods,

0:04:13 > 0:04:17and we use their flavour in puddings and sweet things.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21We need to use the flavour of vanilla in our shortbread.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Let's find out more about vanilla on our computer.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Vanilla beans come from a very special kind of flower.

0:04:33 > 0:04:38The beans grow for a long time until they're ready to be picked.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40They must be picked very carefully,

0:04:40 > 0:04:42so they're not damaged.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47They are put in some very hot water to stop them growing any more.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50The beans are then dried out in the sunshine

0:04:50 > 0:04:53until they go black and sticky and can be used in food.

0:04:53 > 0:04:58To get vanilla extract, the beans are put into big containers

0:04:58 > 0:05:02with a special liquid that sucks out the flavour so we can use it.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05# I can cook! # GIGGLING

0:05:05 > 0:05:09Vanilla extract is really strong, so we only need a little bit.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10Take a teaspoon,

0:05:10 > 0:05:16about this size, and we're just going to pour in half a teaspoon.

0:05:16 > 0:05:17It smells lovely,

0:05:17 > 0:05:21and it'll give our shortbread a delicious flavour.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25We're going to take a clean pair of scissors like this,

0:05:25 > 0:05:29and we're going to snip up some glace cherries. But remember,

0:05:29 > 0:05:34when using scissors, everybody knows it's best to point them at your

0:05:34 > 0:05:36- ALL: Toes! - Toes.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41Take your cherries, everyone, and we'll snip them into tiny pieces.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Samuel, what do you think your cherries look like?

0:05:52 > 0:05:55- Gooey stuff. - GIGGLING

0:05:55 > 0:06:00Do you think they look like shiny jewels?

0:06:00 > 0:06:03- Ooh, yeah!- Do you think that you might find them

0:06:03 > 0:06:05on the crown of a king?

0:06:05 > 0:06:07GIGGLING

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Now we're going to put our shiny jewels, or our cherries,

0:06:15 > 0:06:19into our mixture. You can use your spoon if you want

0:06:19 > 0:06:21to get them out the little cup.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- Or your hands.- Oooh, very sticky.

0:06:26 > 0:06:31Do you like getting sticky fingers? I've got really sticky fingers now.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35What does it look like in the bowl?

0:06:35 > 0:06:39It looks like jam is squashed up...

0:06:39 > 0:06:42being in the bowl.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45You're right! It does look a bit like jam.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49Next we need to add some caster sugar. Take your bowls,

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- and sprinkle it in. Whee! - GIGGLING

0:06:52 > 0:06:57This is going to add lots of lovely sweetness to our shortbread.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01- Everyone poured in their sugar? - ALL: Yes.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Samuel, that's brilliant.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08Now we're going to take a wooden spoon and give it a big stir.

0:07:10 > 0:07:11GIGGLING

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Who's got the stickiest bowl?

0:07:14 > 0:07:17ALL: Me! KATY LAUGHS

0:07:20 > 0:07:24And you can pretend to stir at home as well if you want, like this.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Round and round the bowl.

0:07:26 > 0:07:27GIGGLING

0:07:29 > 0:07:31It's really hard now.

0:07:31 > 0:07:37- I can't do it.- I can't do it now, it just breaks through it.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40It's sticking, getting hard to stir now.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43- Mine's sticking together. - That's right.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45It's coming together in a ball - squeeze it.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49Squeeze it into a ball with your fingertips.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Try and push it onto the side of the bowl like that.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Can you squish with your hands like this?

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Can you go squish, squish like that?

0:08:00 > 0:08:01GIGGLING

0:08:01 > 0:08:03My bowl's empty.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06So put your ball back in the bowl,

0:08:06 > 0:08:10and move it over to the side, because now, we'll sprinkle flour.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14Take one of these, and sprinkle it over your mat.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17What do you think it looks like, everyone?

0:08:17 > 0:08:22- ALL: Snow! - It looks like a snowstorm.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26It looks like a big snowstorm, right. Leave a bit in your pot.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31Take your ball, and then plonk it in the middle of your mat.

0:08:31 > 0:08:38Everyone take your rolling pin, and show me your duck feet fingers.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42Can you do this? Put your duck feet fingers on your rolling pin,

0:08:42 > 0:08:45and slowly start rolling out.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53You can pretend to roll at home if you want.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58to-and-fro, rolling, rolling as we go!

0:08:58 > 0:09:01GIGGLING

0:09:01 > 0:09:05If your mixture's sticky, you can add more flour.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11I think that's thick enough.

0:09:11 > 0:09:17We're going to take a baking tray, with some baking paper on top of it,

0:09:17 > 0:09:20and we'll cut shapes into our shortbread -

0:09:20 > 0:09:22to do this, we need a cutter like this.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26You can use any cutter, I'll use a yellow star.

0:09:26 > 0:09:32You need to press your cutter into the dough like this.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Give it a little wiggle, and then,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37pull it out and push it out,

0:09:37 > 0:09:39and put it onto your tray.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46Jammy star. KATY CHUCKLES
