0:00:04 > 0:00:07and designing it yourself?

0:00:07 > 0:00:10I Want My Own Room makes your designer dreams come true.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12THEY SCREAM

0:00:31 > 0:00:33This is I Want My Own Room,

0:00:33 > 0:00:37the show where you create your dream space in your own home.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Want the lounge to be a games room? Done.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44Fancy turning the garage into a recording studio? No problem,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46cos in this show you're in control.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48In the hot seat today is Elsie.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51She needs more space to hang out with her mates.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55So we're going to convince Dad to hand over the keys to the house.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Can I trust you?

0:00:57 > 0:01:01She'll be sharing her plans for a new room with a top designer.

0:01:01 > 0:01:02I think that's genius.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06- Searching for ideas in surprising places.- That's quite groovy.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08And keeping Dad out of trouble.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10Dad, what have you done?

0:01:10 > 0:01:12'With just four days to transform the space,

0:01:12 > 0:01:15'can the team create the room of Elsie's dreams?'

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Is that supposed to be that tough?

0:01:17 > 0:01:19THEY LAUGH

0:01:21 > 0:01:24This is ten-year-old, climbing-crazy Elsie.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28She's fed up having no space in her crowded, three-bedroom house.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31While naughty Dad hogs the lounge,

0:01:31 > 0:01:35and older sister Patsy spreads out in her own room...

0:01:36 > 0:01:39..Elsie has to bunk up with her other sister, Mattie.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45'I need to get round to Elsie's to find a space in her house

0:01:45 > 0:01:47'we can turn into her very own room.'

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Hello, Elsie. How you doing?

0:01:49 > 0:01:51I'm good, thank you. D'you want to come inside?

0:01:51 > 0:01:54I'd love to. Thank you very much.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57- It's a really old house. How old is it?- I think about 200 years old.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59This is your bedroom.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02It's great fun sleeping in bunk beds, isn't it?

0:02:02 > 0:02:06It's OK, but I share with my sister, and I don't get any space

0:02:06 > 0:02:09when I have sleepovers. That's really annoying.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12When friends come, if I'm on the top and they're on the bottom,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14you talk down to them. That's annoying.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Also, when they sleep here and there's a bed on the floor,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19there's no room to do anything else.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23I can imagine. Once you put a bed down next to the bunk beds,

0:02:23 > 0:02:24that's all the room eaten up.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Let's have a look round the rest of the house.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32- What's in there? - This is the snug.- Let's have a look.

0:02:32 > 0:02:33I love the word, "snug".

0:02:33 > 0:02:36It makes me think of things being cosy and lovely.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41It's not really that cosy in here.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43It's a bit of a mess, isn't it?

0:02:43 > 0:02:47- Crumbs! You have the piano in here. Do you play the piano?- Erm, no.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51- What do you actually use it for? - Nothing but playing pictures on.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54It's the world's biggest photo shelf.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58- What's in here?- They're my old toys from when I was about two.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00- And you're now...?- Ten.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02I think this room has definite potential.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Let's go and work on your dad. What d'you reckon?

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Definitely.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11'There's nowhere in Elsie's shared bedroom for sleepovers.

0:03:11 > 0:03:16'But I've spotted a space downstairs that would be perfect.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19'Will Dad hand over the keys to the house?'

0:03:19 > 0:03:21It's fair to say Elsie suffers from a lack of space.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23What do you have to say about that?

0:03:23 > 0:03:26I think she's got plenty of room.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27It's really not true.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30We've decided the best room for Elsie would be the snug.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33That's the room we want to make into her own.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36To prove to you Elsie needs more space,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39we went into her bedroom, measured the floorspace,

0:03:39 > 0:03:43halved it, as she shares it with Mattie and recreated it here.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46We want you to get in your pen and do your favourite hobbies.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Reading the paper, doing the crossword,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51and cycling in Elsie's space. In you get.

0:03:51 > 0:03:52OK. It looks like plenty room to me.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56If Dad has to use the tiny space Elsie has to put up with,

0:03:56 > 0:04:00maybe he'll realise she needs her own room.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03It's not even big enough for a sheep.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Why would I want a sheep in my space? That's just silly.

0:04:06 > 0:04:07BELL RINGS

0:04:07 > 0:04:11Ooh, no. Sorry, not allowed to bump into the wall.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14I think you were out of the space, then.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16Look, it's the same amount of space every time.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23Come on then, Dad, out you come. I think the point has been proved.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Elsie hasn't got enough space, has she?

0:04:25 > 0:04:29You can read a paper there, but there's not room for much else.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Are you ready to hand over the keys to your house

0:04:32 > 0:04:35to let Elsie redecorate?

0:04:35 > 0:04:37I'm not sure. Can I trust you?

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Oh! How very dare he!

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Come on, Dad!

0:04:42 > 0:04:45Do you agree to let Elsie redesign your house,

0:04:45 > 0:04:48in any way she chooses, to give her more space?

0:04:49 > 0:04:51OK!

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Yes! Nice one.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57So, Elsie is now in charge of designing her own room.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00She'll get to tell Dad what to do,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03and everything needs to be finished in just four days.

0:05:03 > 0:05:08Time to meet someone who'll make all your designer dreams come true.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Meet Kathryn Rayward.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14She's been an interior designer for over a decade

0:05:14 > 0:05:16and redecorated hundreds of rooms.

0:05:16 > 0:05:21She'll need all her skills to transform the junk-filled snug

0:05:21 > 0:05:23into Elsie's new room in just four days.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27So, Elsie, how would you really like to see this room?

0:05:27 > 0:05:32I want it to be like a chilling-out zone to have sleepovers and stuff.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34We can do that. This is quite a big room.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Once the clutter's out of it, you'd be surprised how big it is.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40If you could have anything you wanted,

0:05:40 > 0:05:42what would you like to have in here?

0:05:42 > 0:05:46If you had a rock climbing wall and monkey bars across the ceiling,

0:05:46 > 0:05:50so you could go round and up and over...

0:05:50 > 0:05:53- Do you like doing rock climbing? - Yes, a lot.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57- We should see if we can do a drawing of it. You'll have to help me.- OK.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04Elsie loves bouldering, a style of climbing using different-coloured

0:06:04 > 0:06:07hand and foot holds for climbers to go up specially-made walls.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12You won't find ropes or harnesses here.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16Instead, climbers use large crash mats to keep safe.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24But is it possible to recreate all this in a small room?

0:06:24 > 0:06:28Are they your monkey bars coming in? Oh, she's good.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32I see. So, the whole of that bit becomes the whole climbing bit.

0:06:32 > 0:06:37Yeah. If this tiny bit of the wall was just rock climbing...

0:06:37 > 0:06:39That would be amazing!

0:06:39 > 0:06:42A brilliant idea to take it up to the side and climb up and across.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44I think that's genius.

0:06:44 > 0:06:49Maybe around here you could have some beanbags.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Exactly. That is fantastic!

0:06:52 > 0:06:54It looks awesome!

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Elsie's shown Kathryn the basic design for the room.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59They need to check out a local climbing centre.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03Elsie may be a bold boulderer, but she now needs

0:07:03 > 0:07:06to look at the walls from a designer's point of view.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Tell me what I need to know about bouldering before we get there.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Stay low on the rock wall.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- On the floor? - No, on the climbing wall.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21And keep your feet on the big ones, so you stay stable.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25OK. Keep low, feet on big ones. Okey-dokey, I've got you.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28If you fancy designing your own room,

0:07:28 > 0:07:31get out and about and look for ideas in unusual places.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33It's already worked for Elsie.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36She may be a climber, but she'd never noticed

0:07:36 > 0:07:40hand-holds are a vital part of climbing wall design.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41That feels like a rockface.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43- That's quite groovy.- I like that.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47I like that one. It's almost got finger-holds in it.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48That's quite cool.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52I like the difference of the really big hand-holds and the little ones

0:07:52 > 0:07:54and it would look nice to have different types.

0:07:54 > 0:07:59But the bright, colourful climbing centre raises questions for Kathryn.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02I'm concerned this won't be appropriate

0:08:02 > 0:08:04for a small room like Elsie's.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08We need to be clever and come up with something completely new.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17With so many designs already out there,

0:08:17 > 0:08:19it will be tough to come up with something new.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23Time to get some tips from climbing wall designer, Percy.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Have you any advice about what I should do in my wall?

0:08:26 > 0:08:33Try making it as fun as possible. Have as many wild ideas as you want.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37Don't just think about colour and the holds, think about the whole wall

0:08:37 > 0:08:40and how you could make it even more interesting.

0:08:40 > 0:08:45Sounds like good advice to me. While Elsie snaps up more ideas,

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Kathryn is getting to grips with climbing.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51She wants a climber's eye view before completing

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Elsie's design for a dream bouldering wall.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57It's easy to climb up. When you climb down again... I find harder.

0:08:57 > 0:09:02- Can I come down now? - Yes. Come on down, Kathryn.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05You don't seem to "bouldered over" by climbing.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07What have you seen here you'd like in your room?

0:09:07 > 0:09:10I want the bright hand-holds. I think they liven up the room,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13but I don't want all the paintwork in different graffitis.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16I don't think they look very pretty.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20I agree. It needs to be a bit prettier.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22That's a good word to think about.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26But is it possible to recreate all this in Elsie's small snug?

0:09:26 > 0:09:28It's a massive challenge.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32So, while Kathryn polishes up Elsie's design,

0:09:32 > 0:09:35I'll get things started back at the house.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Are you feeling inspired after your design trip?

0:09:39 > 0:09:40Definitely.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42And, Dad, are you ready for some hard work?

0:09:42 > 0:09:44- OK.- That is the right answer.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46Else, do the thing.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49You've been telling me to tidy my room for so long,

0:09:49 > 0:09:50now you can tidy this room.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54- Here are some things cos you're going to get dirty.- Thanks, Elsie.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Ha-ha. Go on, go and get your clothes on.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59We only have four days to transform the room.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03Every second counts, and Elsie knows it.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06On your marks. Get set. Go!

0:10:07 > 0:10:10It's Dad's job to completely empty the room,

0:10:10 > 0:10:13but this tiresome task doesn't end there.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17In two days' time, he'll have to go through all the stuff he's cleared

0:10:17 > 0:10:20to decide what to keep and what to get rid of.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24It's such a big box and there's so many books.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26The faster you go, the more boxes you'll fill.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28That's right, Elsie. You tell him.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Just put it in!

0:10:30 > 0:10:32You're such a bossy boots!

0:10:32 > 0:10:35You're nearly two minutes now.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Oi, Dad! This is supposed to be a race to the finish,

0:10:38 > 0:10:40not a trip down memory lane.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42Dad, stop looking at that picture. Put it down!

0:10:44 > 0:10:47I think Dad finds it OK putting things in the boxes,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50but it's a bit of dirty work, so he's not that happy about it.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53I'm making him do it. We must get the room finished.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54DAD SIGHS

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Stop it!

0:10:58 > 0:11:00HE LAUGHS

0:11:00 > 0:11:02I'm not saying the room was really bad,

0:11:02 > 0:11:06but we've had to bring in professionals to help out.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10(SHE MOUTHS)

0:11:11 > 0:11:15If Dad were left to his own devices, we'd be here for weeks.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20After completing the design for Elsie's climbing wall,

0:11:20 > 0:11:21Kathryn is back at the house.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24With the clearout behind schedule,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27she's spotted some gems still lying around.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Now we've cleared everything out,

0:11:29 > 0:11:32we can focus on the nice, interesting things.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36If we keep it quite minimal in comparison with the new room,

0:11:36 > 0:11:39all these things will shine out and can be appreciated.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Whoa there, Kathryn! Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45There's still a "key" piece of furniture to be moved.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49I think we need the boys.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52MUSIC: Right Said Fred by Bernard Cribbins.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59I know we agreed the piano had to be moved,

0:11:59 > 0:12:03but it's proving really difficult. Isn't it, guys?

0:12:08 > 0:12:10I think you should have a round of applause.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Look how big this room looks now it's empty.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18It's great. It's massive.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22Now we have the empty room, I have the photos from the climbing centre.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24Talk me through what's going on here.

0:12:24 > 0:12:29I took pictures of what I liked and don't like in different designs,

0:12:29 > 0:12:32and the bold patterns and what I wanted and what I didn't want.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34That's bold, bright and colourful.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38It is. We came up with the idea that something that multi-coloured

0:12:38 > 0:12:42and bright would probably give you a headache if you had that in here.

0:12:42 > 0:12:47OK. Moving on to this room, what have we got here, Kathryn?

0:12:47 > 0:12:50This is a bird's eye view of what we'll have in here,

0:12:50 > 0:12:54so imagine a crash mat on the floor over there,

0:12:54 > 0:12:56and here we've got a big chair.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59It's so big, I'm not sure we'll get it through the door.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03If we do get it in, it might move around a bit.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06This cupboard and storage is completely cool.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09I think you'll go, "Look at the climbing wall",

0:13:09 > 0:13:11turn round and go, "Look at that, as well".

0:13:11 > 0:13:13Elsie, d'you like it?

0:13:13 > 0:13:16I think it will be wicked! I'm really excited.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19I think Kathryn and me have made a really good idea.

0:13:19 > 0:13:20With the clear out complete,

0:13:20 > 0:13:24how is Elsie feeling about turning her dream room into reality?

0:13:24 > 0:13:29I'm looking forward to starting everything and getting it going.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31I want the climbing wall to be there.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34I'm really excited about it being there,

0:13:34 > 0:13:38but I don't want it to be the whole room.

0:13:38 > 0:13:43So, I'm nervous but very excited about what I'm going to see.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50'Elsie had no room to hang out with friends,

0:13:50 > 0:13:52'but we spotted the perfect space

0:13:52 > 0:13:54'and convinced Dad to hand over the keys.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59'We've searched out some new ideas and cleared the junk-filled snug,

0:13:59 > 0:14:02'but we have a long way to go to create Elsie's dream room.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05'There's no guarantee she'll like it.'

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Three, two, one...

0:14:09 > 0:14:14Day two, and all is quiet in the village.

0:14:14 > 0:14:15But not in Elsie's new room.

0:14:15 > 0:14:16BIKE BELL RINGS

0:14:16 > 0:14:18DRILLING

0:14:20 > 0:14:24- Even Dad is making his own sound effects.- Ohhhh....

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Piece of cake, this.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33Kathryn wants to turn something old into something new.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- Do you recognise this teeny, tiny, cutie cherub?- Yeah.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39- Who is it?- Me.

0:14:39 > 0:14:45So, what we'll do is create Andy Warhol-style self portraits.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49Andy Warhol was part of the 1960s Pop Art movement

0:14:49 > 0:14:52and created many famous portraits,

0:14:52 > 0:14:55including this one of film star Marilyn Monroe.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59He even made paintings out of everyday items like tins of soup,

0:14:59 > 0:15:03and turned something that costs around £1 into art

0:15:03 > 0:15:05that sold for over £7 million.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08That would buy you a LOT of soup.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10We'll be inspired by him

0:15:10 > 0:15:14and make really simple bright, colourful portraits.

0:15:14 > 0:15:19What I have here is a lovely pile of plain black-and-white photocopies

0:15:19 > 0:15:22I've had made of the lovely, cheruby photograph of you.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24So, nothing swanky at all.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27This is a quick way to put some colour in your room,

0:15:27 > 0:15:30so why not have a go yourself?

0:15:30 > 0:15:32The first job is to take normal poster paints

0:15:32 > 0:15:36and add some water to make a thin mixture called a "wash".

0:15:36 > 0:15:41Then what I'm going to do is paint on top of your little cheruby face.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45Once all the pictures are painted, they need to be cut out

0:15:45 > 0:15:46and arranged in a frame.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50So, when you're absolutely happy with it,

0:15:50 > 0:15:52then attack it with the glue.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55While Elsie has fun with her pictures,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58there's no time to monkey around in the room.

0:15:58 > 0:15:59It's a hive of activity.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01The climbing wall is taking shape

0:16:01 > 0:16:04and Dad is hard at work stripping the walls.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06Hang on, that's not Dad!

0:16:06 > 0:16:08Now, THAT's Dad.

0:16:08 > 0:16:13OK, "Four letters, feet upon the sofa, beginning with L."

0:16:13 > 0:16:16"Loaf"? Maybe "idle".

0:16:19 > 0:16:20Wait till Elsie sees this.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23I think there'll be one or two "cross words".

0:16:24 > 0:16:29Back in the garden, it's time to see if Elsie's handiwork has paid off.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32This is always the really exciting bit.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Duh-duh-duh-duh-dah-dah-dah!

0:16:34 > 0:16:38Hey, look at that. That's pretty groovy, isn't it?

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Yeah. It's awesome.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41Well done, you.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45What are you doing?

0:16:45 > 0:16:47I'm just having five minutes' sit down.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49You're being really lazy.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52Lazy? Four letters, beginning with L. Well done!

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Come on! Get in there!

0:16:58 > 0:17:02- You missed a spot.- Where? Here?

0:17:02 > 0:17:06It's fun bossing him today but he needs it. He's been quite lazy.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13With two days down and two to go,

0:17:13 > 0:17:18the climbing wall takes shape with the team positioning the hand-holds.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21But what does Elsie make of the new addition to the room?

0:17:22 > 0:17:24The climbing wall looks amazing.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28I can't imagine how good it'll be when it's finished.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31The next job is painting.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34That's painting the walls, Dad.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37- Sure this is the best thing to do? - What have you done?

0:17:37 > 0:17:41- Just poured water down my leg. - What a strange thing to do.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43You seemed to come in with a level of expertise

0:17:43 > 0:17:45and then pour water down my leg.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Actually, maybe that's working now.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50The paint's gone but I'm left with a damp leg.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53Elsie got paint in her hair, but well done.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56That means you're doing well. Paul, have you paint in your hair?

0:17:56 > 0:17:58All paint, no hair, I think.

0:17:59 > 0:18:03Instead of going for the graffiti art of the climbing centre,

0:18:03 > 0:18:06we've taken all of Elsie's ideas on board.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09Kathryn's used the Pop Art theme to design a colourful face

0:18:09 > 0:18:11for the bouldering wall.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12This is her nose. HE LAUGHS

0:18:12 > 0:18:17We think Elsie will love it but we want to keep it a surprise,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19so she's no longer allowed in the room.

0:18:20 > 0:18:25Painter Steven has a few sticky problems with the design.

0:18:25 > 0:18:32The main challenge has been trying to position it around the whole thing.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37That looks like a bogey.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41While Steven picks his way around that problem, Elsie's given Dad

0:18:41 > 0:18:46the epic task of sorting through all the stuff that came out of the room.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48With no space left in the house,

0:18:48 > 0:18:50we've laid it all out at the local church hall.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53How did all that fit in the room?

0:18:53 > 0:18:56He needs to work out what he wants to keep and what to get rid of.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00With time ticking away, he only has a few hours to do it.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02What will I do with all that?

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Knowing Dad, there'll be lots in the "keep" pile

0:19:05 > 0:19:07and we need somewhere to put it.

0:19:07 > 0:19:08Kathryn has a plan.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10This is an old storage unit.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13You'll paint it with this blackboard paint.

0:19:13 > 0:19:18Then you could use chalks and decorate it, beautifully.

0:19:18 > 0:19:23If you put books in it, you could label what sort of books they were.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27If you get fed up you could wipe it all off and start again.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29- Great stuff.- Cool?- Cool.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31What d'you think of the design so far, Else?

0:19:31 > 0:19:36I'm really excited about it. I think it's a really cool design.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39Are you excited about what else will go in there?

0:19:39 > 0:19:44I am. I've no idea what will be in there except the climbing wall.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48It will be quite a surprise when I go in.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52Is your dad good at throwing stuff out he doesn't use any more?

0:19:52 > 0:19:55There might be quite a lot of stuff he wants to keep,

0:19:55 > 0:19:59but I think we'll be able to recycle a lot of the stuff

0:19:59 > 0:20:02that we don't want in the room again.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04If Dad's good at recycling,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07I'm sure he'll be working hard to get all the stuff sorted.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13Dad's not the only adult collecting lots of spare junk.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16In the past year, 170 million electrical products

0:20:16 > 0:20:18were sold in the UK,

0:20:18 > 0:20:23but the average modern gadget has a lifespan of just 12 months!

0:20:23 > 0:20:27And there's another past its sell-by date.

0:20:27 > 0:20:29While Dad takes it easy,

0:20:29 > 0:20:32Elsie's been getting a bit too hands-on.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35Oh, my goodness. You're covered in paint.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39There's more paint on you than on the whole unit.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43Shall we see how your dad's getting on sorting the stuff out?

0:20:43 > 0:20:46- I think definitely after we've washed our hands first.- I think so.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53The first thing I noticed was a lot of stuff next to the "keep" box.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57You've got a map here from 1987.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00Most of the roads are still the same.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Dad, come on, 'fess up. How old are these maps?

0:21:03 > 0:21:06I think they're this century.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08- 1990.- So they're not this century.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11'But it gets worse than dull maps.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13'What on earth is that book?'

0:21:13 > 0:21:16- Mushroom Identifier?- Oh, yeah! - "A visual guide to mushrooms".

0:21:16 > 0:21:19If you find a mushroom when you're on a walk,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21that book tells you which mushroom it is.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24It's an invaluable guide.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28'All this stuff suggests you're not a very "fun guy", Dad.'

0:21:28 > 0:21:30I'm not sure why he keeps the maps.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34All of them are about 30 years old and really boring anyway.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37But he likes them, so there.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40With a few less maps in the "keep" pile,

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Dad's work at the village hall is done.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46But for Kathryn and the I Want My Own Room team,

0:21:46 > 0:21:50the finish line's a long way off. They work late into the night.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52They're not the only ones losing sleep.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55All Elsie can think about is seeing her new room.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59I'm excited about seeing what colour the walls are,

0:21:59 > 0:22:01what colour the furniture is,

0:22:01 > 0:22:03what colour the rock wall is.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08So hopefully, it'll be done for tomorrow.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11OWL HOOTS

0:22:12 > 0:22:15So, it's the final day and the heat is really on.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17We've banished the family from the house

0:22:17 > 0:22:19but they'll be back in a few hours.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22The team are working like crazy to get everything done in time.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Let's see how they are getting on.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28'What's that? A giant egg?

0:22:28 > 0:22:32'No, it's the big chair that Kathryn thought might not fit the doorway.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35'And she may have been right.'

0:22:35 > 0:22:38Guys, guys, guys! What has happened?

0:22:38 > 0:22:42Well, having given the measurements over for gaps we knew we had,

0:22:42 > 0:22:45somehow we've had a communication breakdown

0:22:45 > 0:22:47and it won't fit through.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51- Can we take the door off? - I don't think that will help.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53- Can we take the doorframes off? - Erm...

0:22:53 > 0:22:57- What about the window? - That's probably the best bet.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00It's good as we didn't have much left to do, did we,

0:23:00 > 0:23:03before she got here(?)

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Oh, no!

0:23:05 > 0:23:08But, guess what? That's right.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10It won't fit through the window, either.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14We can take a bit off the doorframe,

0:23:14 > 0:23:16or we can take a bit off the back of the chair,

0:23:16 > 0:23:18or get a smaller chair.

0:23:18 > 0:23:19That's what we'll try to do.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22Get a smaller chair that will fit through the door.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25That's one problem dealt with,

0:23:25 > 0:23:28but there's an even bigger one round the corner.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32The giant storage unit going on one of the walls won't fit either.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36It's cos that box is up there.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39That's it. There's that old phone box, guys.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43- They know that? Have they worked that out?- They've seen it now.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Time for some last minute changes.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54Yay! Woo-woo!

0:23:54 > 0:23:57Was that supposed to be that tough?

0:23:57 > 0:24:00The second egg, I mean chair, has finally arrived.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04With less than an hour before Elsie and her dad return, it MUST fit.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07This is going to be "egg-citing."

0:24:10 > 0:24:11Woo-hoo!

0:24:11 > 0:24:15# The chair has gone in The chair's in the room. #

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Mr Bond, I've been expecting you.

0:24:18 > 0:24:19THEY LAUGH

0:24:19 > 0:24:22How cool is this?

0:24:24 > 0:24:27'As we frantically add the finishing touches to the room...'

0:24:27 > 0:24:30A bit of styling there, like I know what I'm doing.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32'Elsie and her dad, who've had a nail-biting wait,

0:24:32 > 0:24:34'have returned to the house.'

0:24:34 > 0:24:38I'm really excited. I can't wait to see the finished result.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41'This is going to be close.'

0:24:47 > 0:24:50Elsie, just a few days ago, you didn't have your own space,

0:24:50 > 0:24:51you had to share a bedroom,

0:24:51 > 0:24:56you had nowhere for friends to stay when they came round.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59- Are you ready to see your new room? - Yeah!

0:24:59 > 0:25:02First thing we need you to do is give the keys back to your dad.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06- Thank you!- Does it feel good to have them back?- Very reassuring.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09OK, let's go in.

0:25:09 > 0:25:14'Just four days ago, Elsie shared a cramped bedroom with her sister.

0:25:14 > 0:25:19'But we spotted the junk-filled snug that had loads of potential.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22'And the I Want My Own Room design team worked their magic.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26'Based on Elsie's brilliant idea of a climbing wall,

0:25:26 > 0:25:28'and her dream of a bright, colourful room,

0:25:28 > 0:25:32'Kathryn took the bold designs of the Pop Art movement.

0:25:32 > 0:25:33'Together they've created

0:25:33 > 0:25:35'one of the most unique rooms in the country.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39'Not only good for climbing, but great for chilling out.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41'All the hard work and late nights count for nothing

0:25:41 > 0:25:44if Elsie doesn't like her tailor-made room.'

0:25:44 > 0:25:47I'll say "three, two, one", then you'll take your hands off.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49Three, two, one.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh!

0:25:52 > 0:25:54It's amazing!

0:25:54 > 0:25:55Yeah, it's wicked.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58- Pull.- Oh, wow!

0:26:00 > 0:26:04- You've got a bed so when friends stay...- That's so clever

0:26:04 > 0:26:07..other people can sleep on the mats because they're really comfy.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09That's amazing! Oh, my gosh!

0:26:09 > 0:26:12Can you see what the character says?

0:26:12 > 0:26:14- "Oh, Elsie!"- "Oh, Elsie!"

0:26:14 > 0:26:16So, it's saying this is your room.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20- D'you love it?- I love it. - Oh, I'm so pleased!

0:26:20 > 0:26:23It's just amazing. I can't get over everything.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25It's all just wicked and I love it.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28It's all really lovely. It's all colour-coordinated.

0:26:28 > 0:26:32- Looks great with your pink jeans, as well.- Yeah!

0:26:32 > 0:26:35- 'Elsie loves it.' - Oh, wow, it's a mini fridge!

0:26:35 > 0:26:38'But will Dad think it was worth handing the keys over for?'

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Wow! That is FANTASTIC!

0:26:44 > 0:26:46That is just amazing!

0:26:46 > 0:26:48That's just what I would have done with it.

0:26:48 > 0:26:53It's fantastic. It's not quite the old-fashioned map room I had in mind,

0:26:53 > 0:26:56but it's everything she wanted, so I'm chuffed to bits. It's great.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00'And finally, what do sisters Patsy and Mattie make of the design?'

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Wow, I'm so impressed, Elsie!

0:27:05 > 0:27:07So, you've had time to take it in, Elsie.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09What do you think of your room?

0:27:09 > 0:27:11It's just amazing. I'm really overwhelmed.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Yeah, I love it.

0:27:13 > 0:27:14Thank you so much!

0:27:16 > 0:27:17Just a few hours ago,

0:27:17 > 0:27:20I thought there was no way we would finish that room, but we have.

0:27:20 > 0:27:24What was once a dusty old room is now Elsie's beautiful room,

0:27:24 > 0:27:26and she loves it.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30I've really enjoyed creating my own room.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33Not just because I get a really pretty room, but it's all mine.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36I don't have to share it with anyone else.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44Can I come down now?

0:27:46 > 0:27:49Mr Bond, I've been expecting you.

0:27:51 > 0:27:52To sum up my room in three words

0:27:52 > 0:27:56I'd say stylish, whacky and adventurous.
