0:00:04 > 0:00:07Of taking control and designing it yourself?

0:00:07 > 0:00:12I Want My Own Room makes your designer dreams come true.

0:00:12 > 0:00:17# I want, I want my own room

0:00:17 > 0:00:21# I want, I want my own room

0:00:21 > 0:00:24# I want, I want my own room

0:00:24 > 0:00:27# I want, I want my own room

0:00:31 > 0:00:33This is I Want My Own Room,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36the show that gives you a hand in designing your own space.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37Oof!

0:00:37 > 0:00:41Don't worry if you haven't got an eye for design -

0:00:41 > 0:00:44we've got one.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Yargh!

0:00:49 > 0:00:53Create any room you want because, let's face it...

0:00:55 > 0:00:58..you're in control.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05In control today is Jake,

0:01:05 > 0:01:09he needs a space where he can indulge his passion for inventions

0:01:09 > 0:01:13and entertain his friends, so I help him take charge of the house.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14Yeah!

0:01:14 > 0:01:19With the help of a cool designer, he creates his own room...

0:01:19 > 0:01:22- Be nice to have lots of colourful leads and stuff.- Yeah.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24- ..and Mum and Dad are told to lend a hand.- Wake up!

0:01:26 > 0:01:28With only four days to transform Jake's room,

0:01:28 > 0:01:31will it be all systems go

0:01:31 > 0:01:33or might it be all systems no?

0:01:34 > 0:01:38- It's not going to work.- No.- Taa-daa!

0:01:41 > 0:01:4411-year-old Jake lives by the sea with his mum, dad,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48brother Adam, sister Emily and Freddie the dog.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Jake is mad about science and gadgets

0:01:50 > 0:01:55and would love to spend all his time conducting cool experiments.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59Jake has recently been given his sister Emily's old bedroom,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01leaving his room free for creating contraptions.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05But this room is old and drab and when Jake's friends come round,

0:02:05 > 0:02:09there isn't even a comfy place to sit.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11Unfortunately, Jake's house is so busy

0:02:11 > 0:02:15that Mum and Dad have no time left at the end of the day

0:02:15 > 0:02:19to turn Jake's old, dated room into a futuristic science pad.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21I think it's about time I called in on Jake

0:02:21 > 0:02:26to help him find a way of getting the super-duper space he deserves.

0:02:28 > 0:02:29Hello.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32- Hello, Lisa. Come on in.- Thanks, Jake.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36What's the problem with this space?

0:02:36 > 0:02:40Well, it used to be my sister's room and since she's got a new room,

0:02:40 > 0:02:42I've moved into this room.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44The room is three different colours. Lilac there,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47and then blue there, and pink round the edge.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49How on earth did that happen?

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Well, when I moved in, it got half painted.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55Mum and Dad started but they were too busy to finish

0:02:55 > 0:02:57so it's still pink.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- Your old room is next door?- Yes.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03This is a really good space, isn't it, in here?

0:03:03 > 0:03:06I like to use it for when my friends come round as just a space to go,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09but there's not enough seating in here.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13I'm looking at the wallpaper. Is it a little bit babyish?

0:03:13 > 0:03:17I've grown out of it since I got here which was ages ago.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21It's a biggish room that we could redecorate to suit your needs more.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25- Will Mum and Dad trust you to do the interior design?- Probably not.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29I think we need to go and find out. Shall we go and see?

0:03:29 > 0:03:30- Yes.- Come on.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34- Let's do something with that room too.- Yeah, OK.- Cool.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Jake's room needs an overhaul.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39However, Mum and Dad are too busy.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43So will they let Jake take charge of getting it done?

0:03:50 > 0:03:54- Can you stop being so busy? Are they always this busy?- Yep.

0:03:54 > 0:04:00Well, Mum and Dad, Jake's been showing me his room, haven't you?

0:04:00 > 0:04:02Do you know what, I think he's got a point.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05- It could do with a bit of a revamp, couldn't it?- It's not that bad.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08I couldn't reach all the way to the top.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11- It's mostly blue.- Yeah, and the other room, there's one chair.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16- It's not great for having friends round, is it?- There's only one Jake.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20I think we need to demonstrate to you the problems that you face,

0:04:20 > 0:04:21don't you reckon, Jake?

0:04:21 > 0:04:24We're going to have a party. There's some party food.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27If you'd go upstairs, I'll get the party started.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Go on, off you go.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Right, Jake. Come with me.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36Calling all neighbours, calling all neighbours.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40There is a party at Jake's house. Come on. Oh, yes, madam.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42Come on down. Sir, madam.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47Yes, come on down, party games just over here, sir. In you go.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51Seems a bit of a tight squeeze so let's get everyone loosened up.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Let's have a party game - musical chairs! OK, ready? And...

0:04:58 > 0:05:00# Agadoo-doo-doo

0:05:00 > 0:05:01# Push pineapple shake the... #

0:05:05 > 0:05:08Well, that didn't last very long, did it?

0:05:12 > 0:05:18Well, thanks for coming, guys. Sorry it didn't last very long, the party.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20Thanks for coming anyway. We really appreciate it.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Sorry it didn't last very long.

0:05:24 > 0:05:25So, Mum and Dad,

0:05:25 > 0:05:31- now you can understand the problems that Jake faces with his room.- Yes.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33So, do you agree to let Jake redesign your house,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36in any way he chooses, to give him more space?

0:05:38 > 0:05:43- I think so.- Yeah.- Yes!- Yes!

0:05:43 > 0:05:47Jake is now in charge of designing his own room.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52He's also in control of Mum and Dad and will have them working for him.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54It must be completed before he has to give back the keys

0:05:54 > 0:05:57in just four days.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01To help Jake achieve this, meet Kathryn Rayward.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03She's been an interior designer for over a decade

0:06:03 > 0:06:06and has redecorated over 100 rooms.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10But can she drag Jake's old rooms out of the Stone Age

0:06:10 > 0:06:11and into the space age?

0:06:11 > 0:06:15Just tell me, Jake, how do you use the space at the moment?

0:06:15 > 0:06:18Basically, it's just a room for my friends and it would be nice

0:06:18 > 0:06:23if I could just have a room to be proud of.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27This room, it's really not the place where you want

0:06:27 > 0:06:30to do your inventions and think and hang out.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34Kathryn has brought along an overhead projector

0:06:34 > 0:06:36and quickly draws out the shape of Jake's room,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39which is then projected onto his wall.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43It's then Jake's turn to draw in what he would like in his room.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46First up is a sci-fi control panel.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49So this is going to be the control panel

0:06:49 > 0:06:53with all the little buttons and stuff on there.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57- Be really nice to have lots of colourful leads and stuff.- Yeah.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00It does have lots of leads coming out of there

0:07:00 > 0:07:02and then bubbly ones here.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04Jake, that is brilliant.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07That's a fantastic start and I love these drawings.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11However, there's a cool place that I'd like you to have a look at,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13that I think is going to help us with this design.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15That would be great.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Kathryn has got her work cut out to design a room

0:07:18 > 0:07:21with Jake, who is mad about science.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24But Kathryn's got a capital idea,

0:07:24 > 0:07:28and is taking Jake to London and the Royal Festival Hall.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30The Hall is celebrating the Festival of Britain

0:07:30 > 0:07:33which opened here in 1951,

0:07:33 > 0:07:38joining science and design, creating an ultra-modern look.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40This is such a brilliant place

0:07:40 > 0:07:43because it's where science and design come together,

0:07:43 > 0:07:46and there's loads of brilliant things to see.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49But I'd really like you to take this camera

0:07:49 > 0:07:52and take pictures of anything you think is interesting

0:07:52 > 0:07:54and then I can look at your photographs

0:07:54 > 0:07:57and incorporate them into the finished design for your bedroom.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59It's down to you, Jake.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02The museum holds many exhibits relating to the time

0:08:02 > 0:08:04of the Festival of Britain,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07including some very scientific wallpaper.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10There is a doctor who was a crystallographer

0:08:10 > 0:08:14and she liked looking at naturally occurring patterns through X-ray.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17These patterns here were insulin,

0:08:17 > 0:08:21This is an insulin tie

0:08:21 > 0:08:24and this is wallpaper based on the same pattern as well.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28It's just amazing that you can make art out of science.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31I'm really pleased that Jake likes the wallpaper.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35It's given me a really good idea for his bedroom.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Very intriguing, Kathryn.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41To reinforce the whole science and art theme,

0:08:41 > 0:08:45the museum have recreated a 1950s living room.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47I love the coat hanger over there.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50- They are almost like molecules or cells.- Yeah.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Also, there's a scientific element to it, too.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56It's just amazing how science and design

0:08:56 > 0:09:00can come together to make such fantastic objects,

0:09:00 > 0:09:04and I think it's great and inspiring that I've come here.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08With Jake giving Kathryn plenty to think about, back at the house,

0:09:08 > 0:09:11it's all systems go for Mum and Dad.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17So, while Kathryn cracks on with the design,

0:09:17 > 0:09:18Jake's got something for you.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22- Here you go, Mum.- Thank you. - There you go, Dad.- Thanks.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26Well, Mum and Dad, that's better. You're looking ready for action now.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28The reason we're here,

0:09:28 > 0:09:31is because you didn't quite finish the job next door.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34This time, Jake will make sure you finish the job you start.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36First job, clear this room.

0:09:36 > 0:09:37Yes, boss.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Hurry up!

0:09:39 > 0:09:43As we've only got four days to get this room done,

0:09:43 > 0:09:47we've asked the I Want My Own Room team to get stuck in.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Oh, Stu, where you going with that?

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- Just about to smash it up and put it in the skip.- No, don't do that.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55I've got a really good idea for that, a plan.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59If you go and put it safely aside, I will get back to you on it.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02- Thanks very much.- Don't chuck it in the skip whatever you do.

0:10:02 > 0:10:07With the room clear, it's time to see Kathryn's floor plan.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10- Did you enjoy your trip to London?- It was great.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13I really enjoyed it, and it was a great inspiration.

0:10:13 > 0:10:19- What did you see that you liked? - Well, I saw the lights outside.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23- Is that what we've got here? - I can be the assistant here.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26It's an outdoor light, which is why it's outside,

0:10:26 > 0:10:30and it just looked quite funky and groovy.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33I like that, what's that?

0:10:33 > 0:10:35That is a coat hanger but it looks like

0:10:35 > 0:10:38it has molecules or something on it.

0:10:38 > 0:10:42Going and seeing, historically, how brilliant a marriage it can be,

0:10:42 > 0:10:44putting science with art,

0:10:44 > 0:10:46has given me loads of brilliant ideas,

0:10:46 > 0:10:48as you can see from my floor plan.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51We know it's really important to have some seating in here

0:10:51 > 0:10:55and a sofa-bed because you want friends to come and stay, don't you?

0:10:55 > 0:10:58We are going to do a bit of that in the corner there.

0:10:58 > 0:11:04Just behind us here is going to be the control centre of the room.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07My really, really exciting bit is I'm going to create

0:11:07 > 0:11:10a little secret passage through the wardrobes

0:11:10 > 0:11:12so that Jake can shut his doors

0:11:12 > 0:11:15and Mum and Dad won't know which room he's in.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19- Do you like the sound of that, Jake? - Yeah, sounds great.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Science crazy Jake had nowhere to entertain his mates,

0:11:24 > 0:11:28but we've convinced Mum and Dad to let him redesign his old bedroom

0:11:28 > 0:11:32and Jake is now creating a new, modern, sci-fi space.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36But will Jake be over the moon when he sees his finished room

0:11:36 > 0:11:38or will the sky come tumbling down?

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Day two, and Jake wants to get things started.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46Come on, everybody. Get to work.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51Five, only five. Who are we missing?

0:11:53 > 0:11:58Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Mum and Dad.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Wake up! No sleeping on the job.

0:12:03 > 0:12:08Once inside, Jake is keen to get Mum and Dad on task.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11What shall we do with your mum and dad?

0:12:11 > 0:12:14I just reckon we should get them working really hard.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Mum, I've got a power sander there. Dad, come on.

0:12:19 > 0:12:20With Mum on the power tools,

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Dad is given the job

0:12:22 > 0:12:25of knocking through from the playroom to the bedroom.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30Will he be good at it? He won't mess it up?

0:12:30 > 0:12:33He probably won't be good at it but he probably won't mess it up.

0:12:33 > 0:12:38And not to be outdone by Mum, heroic Dad powers through the wall.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Meanwhile, taking her cue from the coat stand

0:12:41 > 0:12:42and wallpaper in London,

0:12:42 > 0:12:46Kathryn has come up with a super idea for a sculpture

0:12:46 > 0:12:48in Jake's new room.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52I really like this wallpaper behind and the pattern.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54I think it's really interesting.

0:12:54 > 0:12:59I thought what we could do is make a kinetic art sculpture.

0:12:59 > 0:13:04What we've got is some multi-coloured modelling clay, some scissors,

0:13:04 > 0:13:09some little eyelets, glue, some fishing wire,

0:13:09 > 0:13:10and this is the important bit,

0:13:10 > 0:13:13I got Stuart to make me, out of a plank of wood,

0:13:14 > 0:13:16this rather nice thing which is a piece of wood

0:13:16 > 0:13:19with little eyelets screwed into it.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22What we will do with the fishing wire and out of the clay,

0:13:22 > 0:13:24we can make interesting shapes.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26The whole thing is going to hang

0:13:26 > 0:13:29and look a bit science-y at the same time.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32- Does that sound good?- Sounds great.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Once Jake and Kathryn have made their shapes,

0:13:35 > 0:13:38they need to be attached to the wire using the eyelets.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Now, it's time to turn up the heat.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Then, hopefully, when they're baked in the oven...

0:13:45 > 0:13:48they'll hold nice and tight.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51While Kathryn pops their shapes in the oven,

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Dad has finished upstairs and is helping me and Mum

0:13:54 > 0:13:57with a little bit of painting.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59How is it having Jake tell you what to do?

0:13:59 > 0:14:03He's gone from quite an obedient child to quite a bossy little man.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06- Who does he get that from? - He gets that from his mother.

0:14:06 > 0:14:10Less chat, everybody, and just get on with the painting. Get it done.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17- They're good and cooked.- Looks like Jake's shapes are cooked to a T.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20Once the shapes have cooled down, they're attached

0:14:20 > 0:14:23using the fishing wire to the wooden baton.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26That's quite groovy, look at that. What do you reckon?

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- I think it's great.- I like it.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32I think the sculpture looks great too

0:14:32 > 0:14:35and with everyone getting stuck in,

0:14:35 > 0:14:38Kathryn is planning something for Jake that sounds very interesting.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43What I've got here is a microphone and if you speak

0:14:43 > 0:14:47into the microphone for me, then I've got some software

0:14:47 > 0:14:50and it means that we can actually see the sound waves of your voice.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Here's the microphone.

0:14:52 > 0:14:57Make sure that you speak with it right close to your mouth.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01- My name is Jake.- Cool.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03- Stewart.- Kathryn.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05I've got an interesting job for you.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09- I've recorded Jake's voice and these are his sound waves.- Brilliant.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11How cool is that?

0:15:11 > 0:15:14What I want you to do for me is make me a shelf

0:15:14 > 0:15:18but maybe take this as our inspiration and maybe have a chunk -

0:15:18 > 0:15:22maybe take it from that tall bit to that slightly less tall bit -

0:15:22 > 0:15:26and do me a frontage which is imitating Jake's sound waves.

0:15:26 > 0:15:32- Just sticks made up, across and around the sides.- Perfect.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I can't wait to see that and hopefully I won't

0:15:35 > 0:15:38have to wait too long as the work's going very well indeed.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41A thought echoed by Kathryn and Jake.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44We'll crack on again tomorrow, hope the sun is still shining

0:15:44 > 0:15:46and I think all will be brilliant.

0:15:46 > 0:15:47Bring on tomorrow.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53Day three and the whole team are racing to get on with the job.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56Come on, everybody. Up and at it.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58Well, almost the whole team.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Mum and dad last, of course.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05- Slow.- Slow.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10A few days ago, Jake's room was a cluttered mess with just one chair.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14We started his room transformation by clearing away all his stuff

0:16:14 > 0:16:17and now I'm going to help him sort that stuff out.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21We've got a lot of stuff here, Jake. Do you know what you want to keep?

0:16:21 > 0:16:24- Yeah, pretty much. - Cool. Let's go for it.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31In no time at all, Jake has sorted his stuff

0:16:31 > 0:16:35into what he wants to keep, what he wants to recycle,

0:16:35 > 0:16:39and a box full of goodies that will be taken to the charity shop.

0:16:39 > 0:16:44- I am impressed, Jake. You seriously know your own mind, don't you?- Yeah.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48Meanwhile, back inside, the work is moving at a pace.

0:16:48 > 0:16:49The perfect time for Mum and Dad

0:16:49 > 0:16:52to make a little something for Jake's new room.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56So, Dad, Mum, so you feel part of the finished room,

0:16:56 > 0:17:01we'd like you to make Jake a '50s molecular clock.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03Very appropriate for his science room.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Just to spice it up a bit, we thought we'd make two.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10You can make these in no time at all.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Take a wooden, round-faced clock.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15Ask a grown-up to make some holes in the side.

0:17:15 > 0:17:20These should be big enough to fit some wooden dowels in.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Attach the dowel to the clock.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25Poke a small hole in some ping-pong balls,

0:17:25 > 0:17:29then fit some ping-pong balls to the end of the wooden dowels.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33Taa-daa! A nifty, '50s-style molecular clock.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36Now, the reason we're doing two is so that Jake can judge

0:17:36 > 0:17:38which one he thinks is the best.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41You happy? You ready? Off you go.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48- Oh! I don't even know why you're bothering.- Fighting talk.

0:17:48 > 0:17:53I'm nearly done. Mum has actually had a brainwave of putting...

0:17:53 > 0:17:56I won't tell you because you might copy.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03There we go. All done. And now for the moment of truth.

0:18:03 > 0:18:08- Which one do you like best? - They do look fabulous, don't they?

0:18:11 > 0:18:13I reckon I like Mum's.

0:18:13 > 0:18:14- Yeah!- Yes.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20With Mum's clock a big hit, it's time to check up on Kathryn.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25- Hello. Oh yes, the door's in. Very good.- Cool, isn't it?

0:18:25 > 0:18:30- Yeah, really good.- I want to show you this, the most exciting thing.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33This is so cool - in here, I've got a DNA kit.

0:18:33 > 0:18:39- A what?- A DNA kit and this is amazing, look. I'll give that to you.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43What you do is this is a company who send you the DNA kit.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46Then to get your DNA you take the cotton bud out of there

0:18:46 > 0:18:48and swab it on the inside of your mouth.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52Hold on, I am loving this. Am I allowed to open it?

0:18:52 > 0:18:57Yeah, open it up. It's something like a medical thing. You've got swabs.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00You've got two in case you get one wrong.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02That's it, side of your mouth and on the inside.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06You send it back to them, they analyse it.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09Shove it in there, in it goes.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13Send it off to them and then you get this amazing thing back. Ready?

0:19:13 > 0:19:18- This is wallpaper. - It's a DNA fingerprint!

0:19:18 > 0:19:23- It's Jake's DNA fingerprint. - You are kidding me!- I am not.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26How cool is that? It's amazing, isn't it?

0:19:26 > 0:19:29Kathryn, I love it. You've played an absolute blinder.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33I think Jake will love his wallpaper but he'll have to wait

0:19:33 > 0:19:36until the final day to see it because from now on,

0:19:36 > 0:19:38the rest of the design is to remain a secret.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42So it's time for Mum, Dad and Jake to call it a day.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Well, guys, the time has come for me to send you away from your own home.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50That's the bad news.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52The good news is when you come back, Jake,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54you'll be able to see your brand new room!

0:19:54 > 0:19:58- Yes!- Right, off you go and we'll see you tomorrow.- Goodbye.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00Cheers.

0:20:02 > 0:20:06See his brand new room if we've finished it by then.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, because once the wallpaper's up,

0:20:10 > 0:20:12the room will be practically finished.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16I think this will be the first time ever the I Want My Own Room team

0:20:16 > 0:20:18isn't working late into the night.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26It's the final day and I think I've spoken too soon.

0:20:26 > 0:20:30The wallpaper still isn't up. I've got the fear again.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33I've got the fear! Stu?

0:20:33 > 0:20:37It's all hands to the pump if we're ever going to get this room - room?

0:20:37 > 0:20:40Two rooms done - before Jake gets back.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43Just to let you know, we have less than an hour until

0:20:43 > 0:20:45Jake and the family are back.

0:20:45 > 0:20:50Up against it timewise. Is this the bed?

0:20:50 > 0:20:53Yeah, we're just attempting to put it together now.

0:20:53 > 0:20:59- So the platform goes there.- Yeah.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Then you've got the mattress.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04I know Jake's a slim child

0:21:04 > 0:21:08- but he'd need to be a sheet of A4 to get on there, wouldn't he?- Yeah,

0:21:08 > 0:21:12- we were thinking that actually. - It's not going to work.- No.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Better get this out to Stuart. Come on, let's go.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19Less than an hour to go. It's never straightforward, is it?

0:21:19 > 0:21:22- When in need, go straight to a man with a plan. Stu.- What?

0:21:24 > 0:21:27The bed is too high and so we need it cutting down.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29- You're joking!- I'm not.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33- How much?- I reckon about that.

0:21:33 > 0:21:38- Is Paul busy?- He's just finishing off upstairs.- I've got loads to do!

0:21:38 > 0:21:41I know we've less than an hour left but we've got to do it.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43- How far off the ceiling is it? - At the moment, by the time

0:21:43 > 0:21:48we've got the mattress on, he's got about that much room. Seriously.

0:21:48 > 0:21:53- Cutting it fine there.- I know, but we've got to do it.- Thank you, Lisa.

0:21:53 > 0:21:58- Thank you, Brooke.- Thank you. You love it really. Loves it really.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00So with the legs cut down and the bed up,

0:22:00 > 0:22:04it's time for a quick clean around.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08# I want to break free

0:22:08 > 0:22:11# I want to break free... #

0:22:11 > 0:22:14You can't fault the I Want My Own Room team.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17If anybody can get this done on time, it's them.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19Guess what, I've got some good news.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22We're going to get an extra day to finish off the room.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23Yeah!

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Bad news is I'm completely lying.

0:22:25 > 0:22:29We've got half an hour left before Jake and family are back.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32- That's half an hour. - No pressure then, Lisa(!)- No.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38- How are we going to do, are we going to do it, Stu?- Yeah.

0:22:38 > 0:22:39Stu better be right.

0:22:39 > 0:22:44Jake's only around the corner and we're just getting his desk in.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48With the clock in, time's up, Jake's back.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54Welcome back to your own house, Mum, Dad, Jake.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57The time has nearly come to see your new room.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00- How are you feeling about that, Jake?- I'm really excited.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04So, Mum and Dad, what has it been like having your 11-year-old

0:23:04 > 0:23:06in control of your house and of you?

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Hard work. I think he's really enjoyed bossing us about.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12- It's been a great experience. - You'll be pleased to hear

0:23:12 > 0:23:14it's time for you to get control of the house again.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17Jake, you know the rules.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20You've got to hand the keys and control back to your mum and dad.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29- Feel good?- I do. - OK, do you want to take control?

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Let us back in the house.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38Just four days ago, Jake's old room left a lot to be desired,

0:23:38 > 0:23:42with tired old wallpaper and nowhere for his mates to sit.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46We decided it was time to give Jake the futuristic space he deserved,

0:23:46 > 0:23:49and with the help of the I Want My Own Room Team,

0:23:49 > 0:23:53Jake has created his very own science pad.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56Jake wanted somewhere for his friends to sit

0:23:56 > 0:23:58and a sci-fi control panel.

0:23:58 > 0:24:03Kathryn's designer know-how has given Jake a funky shelf

0:24:03 > 0:24:07built around his own voice waves, a secret passage into his bedroom

0:24:07 > 0:24:11and the ultimate in scientific designer chic -

0:24:11 > 0:24:13his very own DNA wallpaper.

0:24:13 > 0:24:19But what will Jake make of Kathryn's take on his very personal tastes?

0:24:19 > 0:24:21Three, two, one.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Taa-daa!

0:24:23 > 0:24:24Oh, my goodness. Whoa!

0:24:27 > 0:24:30This is great.

0:24:30 > 0:24:31That's a lovely chair.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36You didn't have any seats in your old room, did you?

0:24:36 > 0:24:39In this one, you've got two seats and...

0:24:39 > 0:24:41A sofa-bed!

0:24:41 > 0:24:46That is a lovely sofa-bed and I've noticed the bookshelf.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48- Do you know what that is?- No.

0:24:48 > 0:24:53It's a digital representation of your voice.

0:24:53 > 0:24:54Oh, my goodness!

0:24:55 > 0:24:59Now, as I undo the blind, shout when you recognise it.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03- Oh, it's the lights!- It's the photograph.- It's my picture!

0:25:03 > 0:25:07- It's the photograph you took of the lights in London.- I like that!

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Looking at that wallpaper, does it remind you of anything?

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Zebra crossing.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15- You know when you see DNA fingerprints?- Yeah.

0:25:15 > 0:25:19- It's your DNA fingerprint on your wallpaper.- How did you get that?

0:25:19 > 0:25:24- That is awesome.- OK. - I think it is absolutely marvellous.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26I absolutely love this room.

0:25:26 > 0:25:31He loves this room and through the secret door, he's got another one!

0:25:31 > 0:25:35- Coming through into the bedroom area.- Oh, wow!

0:25:36 > 0:25:41- So much stuff!- I know, you've got seating for five in there.

0:25:41 > 0:25:45If that wasn't enough, you've got another seat under there.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48Yeah. I like those drawers.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52Those are your old chest of drawers that we've pepped up and revamped.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56There's a lamp on there as well. This is my dream come true.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59- Is it really?- Yeah.- Is it everything you'd hoped it'd be?

0:25:59 > 0:26:02This is just more than I ever imagined.

0:26:02 > 0:26:06I am really thankful.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10It's just been great, I mean, the whole experience.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13It is better than anything I could have ever imagined,

0:26:13 > 0:26:18especially the DNA on the wall, and my desk behind me.

0:26:19 > 0:26:20I just love it.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24I think it's fair to say, Jake is happy with his new room.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26But, what do Mum and Dad think?

0:26:27 > 0:26:30- Oh!- Wow.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33Oh, wow. What do you think, Jake?

0:26:33 > 0:26:35It's...it's great, yeah.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38It's a completely different room, it's fantastic.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42It's ticked everything on your wish list, hasn't it?

0:26:42 > 0:26:46- It's great.- It's just like being somewhere different, it's fantastic.

0:26:46 > 0:26:47I'll never forget this.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51Aww!

0:26:57 > 0:27:01You know, Jake is such a special and unique person,

0:27:01 > 0:27:05and I'm just really pleased that the I Want My Own Room team

0:27:05 > 0:27:09managed to create a room that's as individual and as wonderful

0:27:09 > 0:27:14as him, because, you know what, he really deserves it.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23Jake's now got all the space he needs to play with his mates.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27It's nice, isn't it?

0:27:29 > 0:27:31And it's great.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36# Woohoo I want, I want my own room

0:27:36 > 0:27:39# I want, I want my own room

0:27:39 > 0:27:43# I want, I want my own room... #

0:27:43 > 0:27:46I think I'm probably the happiest boy in the world.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51Yeah, I'm extremely happy.
