0:00:18 > 0:00:20Yes? Great.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23Making it as a champion skater doesn't come easy.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26It takes years of practice...

0:00:28 > 0:00:29..hard work...

0:00:29 > 0:00:32One more, then I'd be a very happy coach.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34..and dedication.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38Five, six, seven, eight! Edge, edge! Not too bent...

0:00:40 > 0:00:43But even then, only a few will become tomorrow's...

0:00:46 > 0:00:47..Ice Stars.

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Coming up...

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Ice dance couple Adriano and Ella

0:00:53 > 0:00:56learn how to do lifts for the first time...

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Down a bit more, down a bit more.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00That was all right, why did you fall?

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Figure skaters Kloe and Alexia baffle scientists

0:01:03 > 0:01:06when they appear on Operation Ouch...

0:01:06 > 0:01:10I've never seen anyone with zero response!

0:01:10 > 0:01:12And speed skater Izzy finds out

0:01:12 > 0:01:16if she's fast enough for an Olympic team trial.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Really nervous! Just want to get out there now and do it.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28It's the run-up to the end of year gala performance.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32The National Ice Centre in Nottingham is busier than ever.

0:01:32 > 0:01:33All around the ice,

0:01:33 > 0:01:38skaters are frantically practising their routines for the big day.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41It's really important to not mess up too many times,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45because I don't have much time, if I don't remember then that's my fault.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49Maybe just, when you start to take off, bend your knee a lot more.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52That was much better, Solomon, very good.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55But it's not just the kids that are feeling the pressure.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Behind the scenes, the coaches also have their work cut out.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01The gala is called Around The World In 80 Skates,

0:02:01 > 0:02:05so each routine will come from a different country or continent.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08And Tamara has decided who skates what.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Spain, OK, and the Spanish flag...

0:02:11 > 0:02:13comes to the centre of the ice.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16- Yes, yeah.- Canada...

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Do you think we need a maple syrup or something, or just the flag?

0:02:19 > 0:02:22It seems Gurgen isn't sharing the enthusiasm.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Oh, Brazil.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28- We tried that today, with the football...- Um...

0:02:28 > 0:02:32- But surely he can't resist this costume!- Yeah, you know, Tamara...

0:02:32 > 0:02:36I know, this just used to be a squirrel, right?

0:02:36 > 0:02:40- No, no, no, we have to... No, no.- No?- No, no.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43- So, that'll be a no, then! - All right, now, Africa next.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45So, you know how Victor is tending at the beginning

0:02:45 > 0:02:49- of the choreography, and he will play drums?- Brilliant.- All right?

0:02:49 > 0:02:52- It's very good, Tamara. Really, really good.- All right.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Whilst the coaches talk props,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58figure skater Kloe is putting in some practice

0:02:58 > 0:03:01for her special role in the gala.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04This is going to be my solo for the gala

0:03:04 > 0:03:07and I think the pressure's definitely on me,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10because only probably three people are going to be doing solos,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13so, it's really nice that I'm one of them.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15And with Jerana as her coach,

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Kloe is not leaving anything to chance.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23I'm just going to go through my new routine off the ice first, because

0:03:23 > 0:03:26if I don't remember on the ice, then Jerana's going to go mad!

0:03:26 > 0:03:30MUSIC PLAYS

0:03:30 > 0:03:33Down. Push!

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Bam!

0:03:35 > 0:03:37More body!

0:03:39 > 0:03:44Rock, your counter rotation, and...

0:03:48 > 0:03:52Open! Chest, chest, chest, chest!

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Ba-ba-ba-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba! Here!

0:03:56 > 0:03:58Good, you did very, very nice.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02Looks like Kloe's off-ice practice has paid off.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Maybe we will change something, you need to be concentrate, yes,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08attention to each other, yes?

0:04:08 > 0:04:13We will be working off ice, on ice, will be perfect, yes?

0:04:13 > 0:04:15But there is still more work to do.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18It's not going to be perfect for the first time, but I'm

0:04:18 > 0:04:22definitely trying my best and I'm trying to do it as well as I can.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Better!

0:04:25 > 0:04:29While Kloe practices her routine, back in the office,

0:04:29 > 0:04:33coaches Tamara and Gurgen are still talking gala.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37- How to get 180 skaters on the ice... - Yeah.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40So, this is kind of a big challenge...

0:04:40 > 0:04:43And with time running out, they are starting to worry.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48- I just hope it won't be a huge mess, the kids will know...- No, no, no.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Stress levels may be running high,

0:04:50 > 0:04:54but it looks like one of their problems might just be solved.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57OK, and they are fine, you said last year it was fine.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58- It depend how, like...- Oh, my...

0:04:58 > 0:05:02SHE LAUGHS

0:05:02 > 0:05:07I love it! It's absolutely wonderful. Can you jump?

0:05:07 > 0:05:10It's one of the props they had been struggling to find

0:05:10 > 0:05:14to represent Australia in the show.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18Now, 10 days before the gala, when some of this happens,

0:05:18 > 0:05:24a good prop, and it's wonderful and I'm thrilled how it looks like.

0:05:24 > 0:05:29And a little bit of choreography, you know, that finishing touch,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31the arms, the jumping and hopping,

0:05:31 > 0:05:33it'll be great, so much fun for kids.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36For the coaches, things are coming together.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41But the skaters still have a way to go.

0:05:41 > 0:05:46New ice dance couple Adriano and Ella are starting to practise their lifts.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49So, Ella and Adriano, they've only just started skating together

0:05:49 > 0:05:51and they are each other's first partner,

0:05:51 > 0:05:53so, really, they are just learning about lifts,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56it's all completely new to them and all a little bit alien.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59And they are hoping to learn them in time for the gala,

0:05:59 > 0:06:02their first ever performance together.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06If we get our lifts really good, they might go into the gala.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Right, so, we're going to move on to the lifts now.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12And it's up to "Jelly" to show them how it's done.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15So, get this position that you did, and you can see how

0:06:15 > 0:06:19she keeps her legs up nice and high here, and she hooks them...

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Me and Adriano look up to Ellie and Josh,

0:06:22 > 0:06:27and we want to try and get up to their level, where they are.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30And flex, flex.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Yes, yes, go down a bit more, down a bit more.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38That was all right, why did you fall? You had that!

0:06:38 > 0:06:41I think when I try and lean back, Adriano thinks

0:06:41 > 0:06:45I can hold my weight as soon as I start to lean back, but I can't.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48She says it's my fault, I think!

0:06:48 > 0:06:50I promise her...

0:06:50 > 0:06:53He keeps on saying that it's all my fault, but it's not!

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Sorry.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58Let's hope they can pull it off on the ice.

0:06:58 > 0:06:59So, you guys now, you're going

0:06:59 > 0:07:02to do the lift that we did off the ice, where you had your heels

0:07:02 > 0:07:06hooked under his shoulder blades, armpits, yeah?

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Can you just hold on your...

0:07:08 > 0:07:11What's so funny about armpits?

0:07:11 > 0:07:15They are part of your anatomy, Ellie, get over it. OK, so...

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Get into that position and just hold the arms for now,

0:07:17 > 0:07:19don't go back, anything like that.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Up, boom, this position.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30And arms... Now, your legs, slide down a bit, under his arms...

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Under his arms, under his arms... A bit more, right.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35- So, there is a start. - It's looking promising.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37But they'll have to practise hard

0:07:37 > 0:07:40if they want to perform with Josh and Ellie at the gala.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Because he is quite strong, I know when he is going to drop me,

0:07:43 > 0:07:45because he wobbles a bit.

0:07:45 > 0:07:50- I'm stronger than anybody in the ice rink, you know that?- You're not!

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Yeah, I am!

0:07:52 > 0:07:55But not everyone needs a partner to skate with.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59Figure skater Kloe is doing a solo performance in the gala.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03And best friend Alexia is on her way round to talk costumes.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07I honestly think that Alexia is like my sister.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Their training schedules mean the girls spend more time

0:08:10 > 0:08:13with each other than they do with their real families.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18But Alexia hasn't seen Kloe

0:08:18 > 0:08:21since her trip back home to Hungary.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23- THEY SQUEAL:- Hi!- Hi!

0:08:23 > 0:08:27THEY SQUEAL EXCITEDLY

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- Your hair is so beautiful!- Do you like it?- Yeah, it's brilliant.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33It really suits you. It really suits you.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38- So, how was Hungary? - It was really good.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40I was with my sister.

0:08:40 > 0:08:45- Oh, yeah, how is she?- She's good. And I did my hair, obviously!

0:08:45 > 0:08:49But I'm going again on Saturday, because I want it blonder.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51As well as catching up on gossip,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54the girls have important details to discuss.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00- Do you know what you're wearing for your group number?- For the gala?

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Obviously, we are doing the USA, so it's white, red and blue

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- then I think it's polka-dot, like, dresses...- Yeah.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10- I have, like, a picture of my... You know, the Hungarian one?- Yeah!

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- I'm going to show you. - You want to show me?

0:09:13 > 0:09:18Right, I have this, I'll show you what I've got in a minute.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21- Is it, like, Hungarian-themed colour dress?- Yeah.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23Yeah, so, you see these...

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- And they're traditional? - Hungarian, yeah.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29And that's what this was about.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32You know, in this one, the flowers and everything.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Oh, OK, I see what you mean, by, like, the red

0:09:36 > 0:09:38and how the stones come down from here.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40Yeah, it looks really good.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44'We just get on because I think our personality is the same.'

0:09:44 > 0:09:46I felt about everything with her, I mean, skating,

0:09:46 > 0:09:51skating related, non-skating related, everything.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53So, you know, about the gala, are you feeling confident or

0:09:53 > 0:09:55anything about it?

0:09:55 > 0:09:58Yeah, and my solo looks quite hard, but I think it's going to be good.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02Yeah, Jerana always does a good job and she knows what she's doing,

0:10:02 > 0:10:04with her amazing choreography.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06Kloe doesn't have much time to practise,

0:10:06 > 0:10:09as the countdown to the gala has begun.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20Speed skater Izzy was recently given a chance to train with

0:10:20 > 0:10:23the Great British Olympic squad.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Pretty tired. Pretty breathless!

0:10:27 > 0:10:31And she met her skating idol, Elise Christie.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34- Hello.- Hi. I've never been so scared!

0:10:34 > 0:10:36I'd like to get on the GB team.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39This year is the year that maybe that could happen.

0:10:39 > 0:10:44Today, she's been invited to do a consideration test, to see

0:10:44 > 0:10:47if she's fast enough to try out with the GB squad.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Izzy, really, she's talented, we've seen that,

0:10:50 > 0:10:52we believe she's got a lot of potential.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55The tests that we're going to do will hopefully confirm that

0:10:55 > 0:10:58and this is going to lead towards an Olympic medal in seven years' time.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02She's doing the test with one of her team-mates, Jess,

0:11:02 > 0:11:06who has already shown she is fast enough to be a contender.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10Jess is one of my biggest rivals and we are quite similar speeds.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Izzy hopes that racing against Jess will push her even more.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16It's good to practise with her, because obviously,

0:11:16 > 0:11:19when it comes to racing her, I'll know how to beat her or what

0:11:19 > 0:11:24to do, even though I find it pretty difficult to beat Jess!

0:11:24 > 0:11:28Being selected for the GB squad would mean a huge life change

0:11:28 > 0:11:31for Izzy and her family.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Um, I think we'd come home for the weekends,

0:11:33 > 0:11:38but it's five days of the week where you are just without parents.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42So, I guess that's kind of fun as well, but weird to think, because

0:11:42 > 0:11:47obviously, I'm only 16, so it's kind of scary to think that I'd be away.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50And for her parents, it's also a worry.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53When Izzy's away, it's quite interesting for us,

0:11:53 > 0:11:56because she's not that great with the phone! She will text us,

0:11:56 > 0:11:59but it's not a lot. We normally have to track her down!

0:11:59 > 0:12:02If Izzy gets onto the squad, she'll be moving into accommodation

0:12:02 > 0:12:05like this and living with other skaters.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07- So...- Wow!

0:12:07 > 0:12:09- This is really nice. - It is, isn't it?

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Once, obviously, you are on the GB squad,

0:12:12 > 0:12:16this is the sort of thing that you would be accustomed to.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20This is what you get for hard work and,

0:12:20 > 0:12:22- you know, good skating.- Decent.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Yeah. So, you've got to learn to cook now, girls! Yeah?

0:12:30 > 0:12:33Yeah, it'd be a big change to live here without my parents

0:12:33 > 0:12:37and move away from home, because I haven't done that before.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40But I think it would be a good change

0:12:40 > 0:12:43and I think I would learn a lot from it.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47It's really nice, really big,

0:12:47 > 0:12:50I could definitely see myself living here.

0:12:51 > 0:12:56Back at the rink, coach Mandy, a former Olympic skater, has got

0:12:56 > 0:12:59something she thinks might inspire the girls in their speed test.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02So, when we've done all this testing, it'll just give us

0:13:02 > 0:13:03an idea where we're going.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07And of course, the end of all this is going to the Olympics,

0:13:07 > 0:13:09or going to the world Championships.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13So, I've just brought a photograph album of what I did

0:13:13 > 0:13:16when I was in the Olympics, I thought I'd go through a few things.

0:13:16 > 0:13:21Mandy competed at the Lake Placid Olympics in New York in 1980.

0:13:21 > 0:13:27So, this is us kind of warming up before the competition happens.

0:13:27 > 0:13:28Yeah, that's cool.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30I was excited, because it was a big competition

0:13:30 > 0:13:34and you kind of thought, "Oh, everybody is here, watching,

0:13:34 > 0:13:36"you've got to do really, really well."

0:13:36 > 0:13:37Wow!

0:13:37 > 0:13:40I never really suffered much from nerves,

0:13:40 > 0:13:43I used to turn it round to positive nerves,

0:13:43 > 0:13:46so I used to get excited, and if I didn't get that excitement,

0:13:46 > 0:13:48I'd know I wasn't going to skate well.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50That's it.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- How are you thinking about the GB squad?- Um...

0:13:55 > 0:13:58I'm quite nervous for the testing today, because like you said,

0:13:58 > 0:14:00we haven't been training much.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04It's not just about the end time - it's how you act,

0:14:04 > 0:14:06and how you take it on as a challenge.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09After some inspiring words,

0:14:09 > 0:14:12the girls don't have long to wait until their big test.

0:14:13 > 0:14:18Across town, solo ice dancer Lauren is also preparing for a big event.

0:14:18 > 0:14:23We're handing out flyers and leaflets about the gala,

0:14:23 > 0:14:25to try and get more people to come,

0:14:25 > 0:14:26so it's not dead,

0:14:26 > 0:14:29and everyone's excited, and the atmosphere's good.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34She's asked ice hockey player Liam and synchronised skater Lucy

0:14:34 > 0:14:37to help out with the advertising for the gala.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40It's on Sunday, and the normal price is, like, £6...

0:14:40 > 0:14:42- Are you going to be there? - I'm going to be there,

0:14:42 > 0:14:45- Lucy's going to be there. - What, skating on the ice?- Yeah!

0:14:45 > 0:14:49The skaters are doing their best to spread the word about the show...

0:14:51 > 0:14:53..so they try out their best sales pitch...

0:14:53 > 0:14:57- ..but you get it for 4! - Oh, 4 - so, it's on offer, then?

0:14:57 > 0:14:58So it's on offer!

0:14:58 > 0:15:01..and it seems to be working.

0:15:01 > 0:15:02Cheers!

0:15:09 > 0:15:12While everyone else is getting ready for the gala,

0:15:12 > 0:15:15Kloe, fresh from having her hair dyed blonde - yet again -

0:15:15 > 0:15:18has been invited to come to London with Alexia

0:15:18 > 0:15:20by the show Operation Ouch!

0:15:23 > 0:15:27So, stand by for an Operation Ouch! and Ice Stars mashup.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29I think it's here.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33They're going to be experimenting on how our brains work.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Why we don't get dizzy.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38What actually happens to our body when we're spinning,

0:15:38 > 0:15:41and it's how we all cope with the dizziness.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45We don't even know how we do it, so it's going to be really cool for us.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49Dr Xand invited the girls to a research centre in a hospital,

0:15:49 > 0:15:52where his friend Eric is going to be filming an experiment.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54- Alexia, hi.- Hello, very nice to meet you.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57- Thank you very much for coming, that's really good.- Hi, hi.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00They want to work out how some skaters can spin

0:16:00 > 0:16:03so many times without getting dizzy.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06What we think - or, at least, the scientists here think -

0:16:06 > 0:16:10- is that you guys will be better at not getting dizzy than me.- Yeah.

0:16:10 > 0:16:11- Does that seem right to you? - BOTH: Yeah.

0:16:11 > 0:16:12It seems right!

0:16:12 > 0:16:14So, do you get at all dizzy on the ice,

0:16:14 > 0:16:17where you're down on the one leg, spinning around like that?

0:16:17 > 0:16:19- Not really on that one.- The sit spin - definitely not that one, no.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21- You don't get dizzy at all doing that?- No.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23It's the ones where you bend backwards -

0:16:23 > 0:16:25you're literally spinning with your head backwards.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28- So, that one...- And especially... - What's that one called?

0:16:28 > 0:16:29BOTH: Layback.

0:16:29 > 0:16:33Layback - and when you say dizzy, like, you finish the layback...

0:16:33 > 0:16:35- Yeah.- ..and then you have to keep skating...- Yeah.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37We only get dizzy for about four or five seconds.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41Four or five seconds, literally, because you have, obviously,

0:16:41 > 0:16:43- the set programme...- Yeah.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46..so you need to keep skating and you need to keep concentrating...

0:16:46 > 0:16:48And while you're doing that, is the ice rink, to you,

0:16:48 > 0:16:49kind of moving around?

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- No!- No, you have to focus yourself SO much.- OK!

0:16:53 > 0:16:55'Dr Barry is researching dizziness

0:16:55 > 0:16:58'to help people who suffer from it with certain illnesses.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00'He's been desperate to meet these two.'

0:17:00 > 0:17:04- I hear you two are ice skaters. - Yes, we are.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06What we're going to do is have you sit in the chair,

0:17:06 > 0:17:08and we're going to spin you in the dark,

0:17:08 > 0:17:09and you have to tell us how you feel.

0:17:09 > 0:17:14So, we've got something that spins, but not quite as fast as YOU spin.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17'When your body spins, fluid in your ear spins, too -

0:17:17 > 0:17:20'but when you stop spinning, the fluid keeps moving,

0:17:20 > 0:17:23'and your eyes tell you that you're stood still -

0:17:23 > 0:17:25'and that's what makes you feel dizzy.

0:17:25 > 0:17:29'The first to try the spinning chair is Dr Xand.'

0:17:29 > 0:17:31This works?

0:17:31 > 0:17:33Just keep an eye on it.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35'By doing the experiment in the dark,

0:17:35 > 0:17:38'Dr Barry is removing one of the signals the brain uses

0:17:38 > 0:17:41'to tell you if you're spinning - your eyesight.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45'After less than a minute in the chair,

0:17:45 > 0:17:47'something very strange happens.'

0:17:47 > 0:17:50I feel completely still - it's really interesting.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53Like, I would absolutely promise you that I'm not moving.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55Hopefully what they're thinking is that our results

0:17:55 > 0:17:58- will be different to his. - Yeah, to his - yeah.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00But what if it's not? That's what I'm scared of!

0:18:00 > 0:18:04What we're going to do, we're going to stop the chair...

0:18:04 > 0:18:05Whoa!

0:18:05 > 0:18:09It just feels like I'm definitely moving in the opposite direction.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12'Next in the chair is Kloe.'

0:18:12 > 0:18:14I'll just hold the chair.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19All right, so, what we're going to do is rotate the chair...

0:18:19 > 0:18:24- OK.- ..and after about a minute, we'll stop the chair...- Yeah!

0:18:24 > 0:18:26..and you have to then tell us if you feel dizzy,

0:18:26 > 0:18:28by turning the wheel.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31- OK, ready?- Yeah.

0:18:31 > 0:18:32OK, here goes...

0:18:35 > 0:18:37We'll turn you round like that for about a minute.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39All right!

0:18:39 > 0:18:43Tell me at what point you feel that you're not moving. OK?

0:18:43 > 0:18:44OK.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48'For most people, spinning at this speed makes them dizzy.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51'Dr Barry wants to know if it's possible to train a brain

0:18:51 > 0:18:53'so that doesn't happen.'

0:18:54 > 0:18:56- Do you feel like you're still moving?- Yes.

0:18:56 > 0:18:57OK.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03- OK, do you feel that you're spinning? - No.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05- You don't?- No.

0:19:05 > 0:19:06- Not at all?- No.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09- Not at all?!- No!

0:19:09 > 0:19:10- Xand?- Yeah?

0:19:10 > 0:19:12That's not normal.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14She doesn't feel she's spinning.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18I've never seen anyone with zero response.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22'Kloe's superpowers seem to have baffled Dr Barry.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24'Can Alexia do the same?'

0:19:28 > 0:19:30- Are you spinning?- No.- Oh!

0:19:30 > 0:19:31Completely stopped.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34- Completely stopped?- Yeah. - THEY LAUGH

0:19:34 > 0:19:38'Most people think they're still spinning even when they've stopped -

0:19:38 > 0:19:40'but not our ice stars.'

0:19:40 > 0:19:42As soon as you stopped, you felt it straight away,

0:19:42 > 0:19:44and if you kept going, you felt that you were spinning.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47It's interesting. It's very interesting.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49- It was so normal - I don't know how to explain it...- I know.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51The fact that they're saying it's not normal is kind of...

0:19:51 > 0:19:53- It's weird, isn't it?- "Oh, well..."

0:19:53 > 0:19:56What do you think of how these guys did, compared to how I did?

0:19:56 > 0:19:58When the chair stopped, these guys were right -

0:19:58 > 0:20:00they felt no sensation of self-motion.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03They had absolutely dizziness on stopping -

0:20:03 > 0:20:04which is correct.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08However, they felt that despite the inner ear signal

0:20:08 > 0:20:11continuing for a good period of time,

0:20:11 > 0:20:16because their brains are better than yours at suppressing dizziness.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Have you ever seen that before?

0:20:18 > 0:20:19No, not really.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23Not without any sensation of motion on stopping.

0:20:23 > 0:20:24That is amazing.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27So, all I need to do, really, is get as good at ice skating as you guys,

0:20:27 > 0:20:30and then my dizziness will go away - is that...

0:20:30 > 0:20:33- That's what we think, right, Barry? - I guess you could go for it.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36'Looks like Dr Xand might be wanting a few lessons

0:20:36 > 0:20:38'from our ice stars very soon!'

0:20:43 > 0:20:44Back in Nottingham,

0:20:44 > 0:20:49speed skater Izzy has recently been talent-spotted by coaches.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51They want to see if she's got the potential

0:20:51 > 0:20:53to join the Great British Olympic squad...

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Now Isabelle is about to finish school,

0:20:55 > 0:20:58now is a real key time for her in her career.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00Obviously, we as Team GB, are really interested,

0:21:00 > 0:21:04and we're seeing something really good and talented in her.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07..and today, Izzy and her team-mate Jess

0:21:07 > 0:21:09are about to be tested by Coach Mandy.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13I'd like to get an Olympic medal.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15I mean, I know that's ages and ages away -

0:21:15 > 0:21:18I think I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

0:21:18 > 0:21:19I've been wanting to do it since I was six,

0:21:19 > 0:21:22so I don't want to stop now!

0:21:22 > 0:21:26With her future Olympic dreams at stake, Izzy is feeling the pressure.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28Really nervous!

0:21:28 > 0:21:30Just want to get out there now, and do it.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34It's a massive opportunity. Hopefully it'll go all right.

0:21:34 > 0:21:35This year I'm feeling quite confident

0:21:35 > 0:21:39that I'm skating a lot better than what I did last year.

0:21:39 > 0:21:44They need to get under 10.5 seconds to prove they've got what it takes.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46The time's really important.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49Like, the GB squad have been on the ice this morning,

0:21:49 > 0:21:52and their lap times are just under 10 seconds.

0:21:52 > 0:21:58What I'm hoping for is for them to skate around 10.5 seconds.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02If they skate under that, I'd be really, really pleased.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Izzy and Jess have just one flying lap to prove they've got the speed

0:22:05 > 0:22:08to get a team GB trial.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11First up is Jess.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13Ready? Go!

0:22:17 > 0:22:18Nice and smooth. Big pushes.

0:22:20 > 0:22:21Little bit faster if we can.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Come on, Jess, keep it going!

0:22:31 > 0:22:32It was really hard.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35I haven't been training as much as I normally do,

0:22:35 > 0:22:37so I'm struggling quite a little bit with that!

0:22:37 > 0:22:41Jess' lap looked good, so the pressure's on for Izzy.

0:22:41 > 0:22:42Ready? Go!

0:22:44 > 0:22:45Big pushes.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57All the way to the line!

0:22:57 > 0:22:58Good.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00Izzy's given it her best shot.

0:23:00 > 0:23:01I feel dead!

0:23:01 > 0:23:04I feel like...I'm glad it's over!

0:23:04 > 0:23:06To be honest, yeah.

0:23:09 > 0:23:10It's results time.

0:23:11 > 0:23:16The girls need to beat 10.5 seconds to be considered for the GB squad.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18Izzy...

0:23:18 > 0:23:21you got 10.4, which is really good...

0:23:22 > 0:23:24..and Jess, you've gone 10.3,

0:23:24 > 0:23:26- so that's really, really, really good.- Yeah!- OK?

0:23:26 > 0:23:29So, all I can do is wish you the best of luck,

0:23:29 > 0:23:32and hope I'll see you at competitions doing really well.

0:23:32 > 0:23:33- OK?- Yep.

0:23:33 > 0:23:34- All right, well done.- Thank you.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36They've done it!

0:23:36 > 0:23:39They've got under 10.5 seconds.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42Now Coach Mandy can report back to Team GB

0:23:42 > 0:23:44with their successful results.

0:23:44 > 0:23:45Nice one, girls!

0:23:51 > 0:23:53150 miles away, in London,

0:23:53 > 0:23:58Kloe and Alexia are still filming an episode of Operation Ouch!

0:23:58 > 0:24:02After the girls baffled Dr Barry with his spinning chair in the dark...

0:24:02 > 0:24:04She doesn't feel she's spinning.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07I've never seen anyone with zero response.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09- Right you ready?- Yeah.- Which way?

0:24:09 > 0:24:12..Dr Xand wants to see if the same happens on a normal chair.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Ooh...

0:24:14 > 0:24:15Whoa!

0:24:15 > 0:24:16- I can't... - HE LAUGHS

0:24:16 > 0:24:18LAUGHTER

0:24:18 > 0:24:20OK... OK, hang on.

0:24:20 > 0:24:21Hang on, hang on.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23OK...

0:24:23 > 0:24:25OK, let's see how our ice stars do.

0:24:27 > 0:24:28THEY LAUGH

0:24:28 > 0:24:29Oh, wow.

0:24:33 > 0:24:34Oh, wow.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36What, nothing?!

0:24:36 > 0:24:39With the girls once again proving their powers,

0:24:39 > 0:24:42they take to the ice to show Dr Xand how it's done.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45We've warmed up, put our skates on,

0:24:45 > 0:24:48and now we're on the ice to do some spinning.

0:24:54 > 0:24:59I mean, I've never actually seen ice skaters, like, who are that good...

0:24:59 > 0:25:02kind of in real life, up close. So that's amazing.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04There's something different about their brains.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06They just don't react to the physical world

0:25:06 > 0:25:08in the way that most people do, which is incredible -

0:25:08 > 0:25:10they just don't get dizzy.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Want to have a go at spinning, Xand?

0:25:12 > 0:25:13I thought you'd never ask.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18- Hang on, I'm going to come to the side of you, OK?- So, bend...

0:25:18 > 0:25:19OK, so, bend - like that...

0:25:19 > 0:25:23- ..and then...- Yeah?- ..kind of rotate yourself, and then pull in.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28Now, my problem is...

0:25:28 > 0:25:30that I am already dizzy...

0:25:30 > 0:25:32- Really?!- ..and then you've got to skate off, and keep...

0:25:32 > 0:25:34I couldn't... Ugh...

0:25:43 > 0:25:46The thing that they were doing with all those spins, I couldn't get...

0:25:46 > 0:25:48It wasn't like I could spin less, it's that

0:25:48 > 0:25:52I couldn't do it at all without, you know, breaking an arm, basically.

0:25:52 > 0:25:54So...no, it was amazing.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00After a science-defying trip to London,

0:26:00 > 0:26:02the girls leave Dr Xand in a spin,

0:26:02 > 0:26:04and head back to Nottingham...

0:26:04 > 0:26:05- Hello, nice to see you. - ALL: Hello!

0:26:05 > 0:26:08- How can I help you today? - Er, we're here for...

0:26:08 > 0:26:11..where a group of young skaters have found a new way to promote the gala.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13Good to go?

0:26:13 > 0:26:14Ready?

0:26:14 > 0:26:18Assia, Adam and Keira are on local BBC radio.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Keira, what are you going to be doing?

0:26:20 > 0:26:25- Erm, it's my first time doing, like, skating in a gala.- Right.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28And what kind of skating do you do?

0:26:28 > 0:26:29Synchronised skating.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32So, if people aren't sure whether to come or not,

0:26:32 > 0:26:34what are you going to say to them?

0:26:34 > 0:26:38- Come.- Yeah, come - cos it's going to be really good.

0:26:38 > 0:26:39Brilliant. Well done.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Fantastic.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44I thought that was really good!

0:26:44 > 0:26:46- Not embarrassing, is it?!- No!

0:26:46 > 0:26:47Just talking!

0:26:56 > 0:26:58With the gala just days away,

0:26:58 > 0:27:02the coaches and skaters are coming together for a final rehearsal...

0:27:03 > 0:27:05This is the first general rehearsal,

0:27:05 > 0:27:07and we're supposed to have everything ready,

0:27:07 > 0:27:09so we'll try, all right?

0:27:11 > 0:27:15..but as the gala becomes a reality, stress levels are running high.

0:27:15 > 0:27:16- ..the drum.- What?

0:27:16 > 0:27:18The drum...yeah?

0:27:18 > 0:27:21Everyone's a bit... you know, up in...

0:27:21 > 0:27:24You know, no-one knows what's going on.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26Sorry. I forgot where I was just then.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28Do you want to do it again?

0:27:30 > 0:27:32- Listen, please, guys.- Quiet!

0:27:32 > 0:27:34No-one knows what's happening!

0:27:36 > 0:27:38Yeah, all the coaches seem a bit stressed today.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Come on, guys, come on, come on, come on.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44When we went on, we were all quite confident,

0:27:44 > 0:27:48and then we started doing it, and everyone forgot all the steps.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51Obviously it'll be really chaotic next weekend!

0:27:52 > 0:27:54Next time on Ice Stars...

0:27:54 > 0:27:57When the gala finally arrives,
