0:02:15 > 0:02:17You guys relax while we go get the facts.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Come on, Edward.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Tomorrow John and Edward will be leading

0:02:21 > 0:02:24a group of tourists around the historic seaside town of Blackpool.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26A place they know nothing about.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30Hey everyone, it's Jedcam here on the pier. Whoa.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34John will be helped by Richard while Edward will be with Katie.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Each team will be given three short stories which the

0:02:37 > 0:02:42tourists will be tested on to find out who the best tour guides are.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46It's time for the boys to meet their first expert - meet David Cam.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49If anyone can teach the facts to Jedward, David Cam can.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- David, are you on holiday? - No, actually I work here.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Are people on holiday all year round in Blackpool?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00They are these days. But that wasn't always the case

0:03:00 > 0:03:04because many years ago people only had one week's holiday a year.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Blackpool has attracted visitors since 1735.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13But it wasn't until the Victorian railways opened

0:03:13 > 0:03:16during the Industrial Revolution that Blackpool boomed.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Workers from nearby mill towns flocked to the seafront

0:03:19 > 0:03:22to spend their one week of yearly unpaid holiday.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25This was knows as a wakes week.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Going to the seaside in Victorian times

0:03:27 > 0:03:29was very different from nowadays.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31You could be fully clothed for a dip in the sea

0:03:31 > 0:03:33and bathing machines were popular for women.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35These look like wooden sheds on wheels

0:03:35 > 0:03:39which brought ladies into the water to bathe in privacy.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41A bathing machine!

0:03:41 > 0:03:42How many piers is there?

0:03:42 > 0:03:45There are three piers, more than any in any town in the country.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Why do they build piers to get close to the bigger fish?

0:03:48 > 0:03:52It's actually a Victorian idea to walk out over the sea,

0:03:52 > 0:03:55to promenade over the water, which was a very novel experience.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Was Blackpool always an entertainment town?

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Blackpool's the entertainment capital of Europe

0:04:00 > 0:04:03and that's why it's so colourful and glitzy and full of fun.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06From all the facts you've told me about Blackpool,

0:04:06 > 0:04:07it seems like a pretty awesome place.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11The sun is shining, today is going to be a Jepic day, come on.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14- Let's get out of here. - Come on, David.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16A Jepic day indeed.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18People have been coming to Blackpool for over 200 years

0:04:18 > 0:04:20on their holidays.

0:04:20 > 0:04:21CHEERING

0:04:21 > 0:04:25But Jedward only have one day to learn all the facts.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27And you're keeping David waiting.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Onto another ride.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Can you guess how old this one is?

0:04:32 > 0:04:34- Ten years.- 20 years.- Two.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37It's actually 109 years old.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39- 109 years old!- Wow.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43But just think back 100 years ago, before they invented aeroplanes,

0:04:43 > 0:04:47this was the only way that people could really experience flight.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Blackpool Pleasure Beach was founded

0:04:52 > 0:04:53in 1896 by WG Bean.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57The oldest ride is a flying machine which is 109 years old.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01It was built by Sir Hiram Maxim whose ultimate dream

0:05:01 > 0:05:03was to take to the skies.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06At the turn of the 20th century, before aeroplanes were invented,

0:05:06 > 0:05:09there was a great race for humans to fly.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10As it was expensive to fund,

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Maxim built the flying machine ride

0:05:12 > 0:05:16and the money he made funded his real flying inventions.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Wow, what an amazing inventor. What else can you show us?

0:05:19 > 0:05:22If you come with me, I'll show you the engine room.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24- Let's go. Lead the way.- Come on.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28- Wow, this places looks amazing. - What can you tell us about this?

0:05:29 > 0:05:33Travelling fairs used to travel all over Europe for hundreds of years,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36but WG Bean set about establishing a permanent amusement park,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39so this was the very first permanent amusement park in Europe.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42And this is the engine room to the flying machines,

0:05:42 > 0:05:44which was the biggest ride he built.

0:05:44 > 0:05:45And this is where it all started.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47You were the trend setter, you set the trend.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50It's like when me and John started off with our hair,

0:05:50 > 0:05:53- now everybody has it.- I haven't.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Don't worry, you can if you want.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57- LAUGHTER - Don't do it, David!

0:05:57 > 0:05:59John, life's a rollercoaster.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Edward, you're going to go down as the biggest loser in history.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04- No, you are.- You are.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07You're suppose to be swotting for tomorrow's tour, boys,

0:06:07 > 0:06:09not going on all the rides.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11MUSIC: "Song 2" by Blur

0:06:16 > 0:06:19The boys seem to be having a hair-raising time

0:06:19 > 0:06:22at the Pleasure Beach, but enough pleasure and more facts, please!

0:06:23 > 0:06:26CHEERING

0:06:26 > 0:06:28- I am the winner!- Moving on.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35She has a very, very, tall tail to tell.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38- Hey, boys!- What's up, Jenni? - S'up, girl!

0:06:38 > 0:06:40What are you going to tell us about the place?

0:06:40 > 0:06:42- What other towers do you think it's based on?- Tower of London.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46- Tower of Jedward. - No. It's actually the Eifel Tower.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49And you could even say that this wonderful landmark is

0:06:49 > 0:06:51the ultimate holiday souvenir.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58The Blackpool Tower was built in 1894 after town mayor

0:06:58 > 0:07:01John Bickerstaffe took his family on holiday to Paris

0:07:01 > 0:07:03and fell in love with the Eifel Tower.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06His immediate thoughts were, "I want one of those!

0:07:06 > 0:07:08"This is just what Blackpool needs."

0:07:08 > 0:07:12The town was rapidly becoming the number one resort in the country.

0:07:12 > 0:07:17The tower is 158m tall and boasts a circus and ballroom.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19When it originally opened,

0:07:19 > 0:07:24the circus featured 40 polar bears performing in the water.

0:07:46 > 0:07:47Are we there yet?

0:07:47 > 0:07:51Whoa. Jenni, it's pretty scary up here.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53When the tower was built in 1894,

0:07:53 > 0:07:57it was actually the tallest building in the UK at the time.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Jenni, do a lot of people propose up here?

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Just get down on one knee and it's like, "whoa" and then...?

0:08:02 > 0:08:05Yeah, they do and they also like to write their names in the sand

0:08:05 > 0:08:07or say "marry me" on the sand and then come up.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56The beautiful ballroom at the Blackpool Tower was opened in

0:08:59 > 0:09:01by architect Frank Matcham.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04The idea was to give every factory girl in the north of England

0:09:04 > 0:09:07the opportunity to become a duchess for the day.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10It is the home of ballroom dancing

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Wow, this place is a nonstop party.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Some other interesting facts about the tower

0:09:18 > 0:09:22and the ballroom is the actual floor takes a whole week to clean.

0:09:22 > 0:09:23If we lose the show tomorrow,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26then that mean's I'm going to have to clean this whole entire floor

0:09:26 > 0:09:28and I cannot spend a week cleaning a floor.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16This guy's solid as a rock when it comes to the facts.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18This rock totally rocks.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21- Can you see the name inside there? - Blackpool rock.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Today we're going to make rock with your name through.

0:10:24 > 0:10:29- Really?- We all know that Blackpool rock is the ultimate seaside treat.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34Rock was originally invented in Dewsbury, Yorkshire,

0:10:34 > 0:10:37but it was Blackpool that made it famous as a holiday treat.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41Rock is made from water, sugar and glucose

0:10:41 > 0:10:46and is boiled to a temperature of 150 degrees Celsius.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49During WW2, rock would be traded on the black market

0:10:49 > 0:10:51because of its high sugar content.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Sugar was a highly valued commodity during times of rationing.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57Women would steal or swap rock

0:10:57 > 0:11:00and sugar for luxury items such as nylon tights.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03I'm going to make some Jedward rock!

0:11:03 > 0:11:04Taking over the sweet world.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27MACHINE WHIRS

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Just look at the red. See the letter R.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40- That says Jedward.- Amazing.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42All this is going to be one great stick.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49The letters are going in between these two pieces.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51What you're going to see now is probably

0:11:51 > 0:11:53the biggest bar of rock you have ever seen.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57There you go, guys, there's your one big stick of Jedward rock.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Amazing.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01And now it will be spun out to size.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04This part of the job is called spinning.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08And what you have to do is try and get all of it the same size.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10I don't think that's the way you do it, boys.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13This, Edward, is totally Jedward style.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Perfect. Jedward.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24The day is nearly over, but there's still time for one more story

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Illuminate us with the facts, Richard.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32What can you tell us about these amazing lights?

0:12:42 > 0:12:46first royal visit from Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Nowadays the lights are an annual event

0:12:48 > 0:12:50that runs from September to November.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52The illuminations stretch for nearly six miles

0:12:52 > 0:12:54across Blackpool's seafront.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57You can even spot the world's largest mirror ball there.

0:12:57 > 0:13:03If you stretched out all the cabling it would measure over 120km.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Wow, that's some Jepic lights.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07What are these things you're going to show us?

0:13:07 > 0:13:10I've got you some drawings. That is for that.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12- Is this the original design? - That's right.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11All right, kids, welcome to Blackpool.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13It's not because it's a ginormous swimming pool,

0:16:16 > 0:16:18So, don't worry about that.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21What is he talking about? Get on with it.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24As you can see there's three piers.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26- Good. - Did you know who built the tower?

0:19:26 > 0:19:30- I think Shakespeare built the tower. - What?

0:20:41 > 0:20:42Oh, dear.

0:20:42 > 0:20:47I think some of the facts that John was saying were not actually true

0:24:50 > 0:24:53It's very popular and brings a lot of tourism to the area

0:24:53 > 0:24:55because people drive up the whole six miles just to check out

0:24:55 > 0:24:57all the LED lights.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00The illuminations started because someone very special came here

0:25:00 > 0:25:03and it was all created for her. I'll give you a hint...

0:25:04 > 0:25:07- Who do you think it was?- Want some tea?- KID: The Queen.

0:25:13 > 0:25:14it was Princess Louise.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Guys, it is light at the moment outside,

0:25:16 > 0:25:19so we can't really see the illuminations, and we thought

0:25:21 > 0:25:23- Who wants to do that? - ALL: Yeah!

0:25:23 > 0:25:26So what we're going to do is get our light or a glow stick,
