0:00:04 > 0:00:08searching for Britain's best young bakers.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12They're easily spotted by their aprons and their agility with eggs,

0:00:12 > 0:00:14flour and butter.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16However, there are many dangers lurking here.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18LOUD GROANING Aargh!

0:00:18 > 0:00:20- What was that? - It's my stomach, mate.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23BOTH: Welcome to Junior Bake Off!

0:00:24 > 0:00:27Today's bakers battle with the Battenberg...

0:00:27 > 0:00:28Aargh!

0:00:28 > 0:00:30..as precision piping is tested.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31Harvey, what's happening?

0:00:31 > 0:00:33I don't know!

0:00:33 > 0:00:35And they recreate their image...

0:00:35 > 0:00:38Hopefully someone eats it before I have to look at it more.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40..with the most personal showstopper yet.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43- I feel like I've got double vision! - LAUGHTER

0:01:05 > 0:01:10Today's fantastic four are about to take on two baking challenges

0:01:10 > 0:01:13to secure just one precious place in next week's quarterfinal.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17- It's so quiet! - SHE LAUGHS

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Ten-year-old cat lover Sophie lives in Merseyside.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22My dad's always loved cooking,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24and so I've been baking with him since I was little.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26And it kind of just became habit.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28That's pretty good.

0:01:28 > 0:01:3112-year-old Macy from Coventry bakes

0:01:31 > 0:01:34for her nine brothers and sisters every day.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36They've been eating all the bakes I've been practising

0:01:36 > 0:01:39for Junior Bake Off. It goes in, like, ten minutes.

0:01:39 > 0:01:4312-year-old Harvey lives in Essex with his mum, dad,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45brother and a very important egg layer.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48I have one chicken called Yorkshire.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50We did have another one who was called Pudding,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53but unfortunately that one passed away.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55I have four sieves.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57- You have four? - For four different occasions.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Joseph from Grimsby is 12,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02and he's been having some pretty crazy dreams.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Once I dreamed I filled a bathtub full of buttercream

0:02:06 > 0:02:08and I jumped in it.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11And I ate it all.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16First up is the technical challenge, designed to test

0:02:16 > 0:02:20the bakers' know-how and their ability to follow a surprise recipe.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25Hello, bakers, and welcome to the hallowed turf of the Bake Off tent.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29Right, for your technical challenge today,

0:02:29 > 0:02:33our judges would like you to make a British classic -

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Battenberg!

0:02:35 > 0:02:37But with a little bit of a Bake Off twist.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Not any old Battenberg.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41It's a rhubarb and custard Battenberg.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44- What a twist!- Judges, what are you looking for?

0:02:44 > 0:02:48What we're looking for is four equal chequerboard squares.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51And there needs to be a thin, even layer of marzipan.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Fantastic. Now, before we go any further,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56has everybody washed their hands? Let's have a look at your hands.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59- Lovely.- Right, guys, you have one and a half hours

0:02:59 > 0:03:02to complete this technical challenge. The best of luck.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04- On your marks,- get set,- bake!

0:03:10 > 0:03:12I've never made a Battenberg before,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15so I don't really know how it's going to go.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17I've never eaten Battenberg either.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23This is what a perfect, traditional Battenberg should look like.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25You want those squares, equal,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27iced beautifully in the centre,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29joined together with a lovely,

0:03:29 > 0:03:32thin layer of marzipan around the edge.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Mmm. That's very nice and light.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37The cream is just enough to hold it together.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40And then the rhubarb is just that slight tang

0:03:40 > 0:03:43just to play against the sweetness of the buttercream.

0:03:43 > 0:03:44You know, if they get this right,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47we are going to have a very tasty technical.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55I'm creaming the butter, sugar and then I'm going to cream the eggs

0:03:55 > 0:03:58together to make the batter.

0:04:02 > 0:04:03Eurgh!

0:04:03 > 0:04:07I need to stir in the flour, ground almonds and milk.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12The Battenberg got its name in 1884

0:04:12 > 0:04:15to celebrate the wedding of Queen Victoria's granddaughter,

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Princess Victoria, marrying Prince Louis of Battenberg.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28I put the butter for the buttercream in the mixture.

0:04:29 > 0:04:30I might need to restart.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33(That's only about half...)

0:04:33 > 0:04:38I am currently flavouring the two different dishes.

0:04:38 > 0:04:44I'm using the rhubarb essence and the vanilla bean essence.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49To give the Battenberg its distinctive chequerboard effect,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52the bakers must dye the rhubarb half of their batter.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Bit too much!

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Oh, gosh. That is really pink.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00SHE LAUGHS

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Why does it not want to come out?

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Hi, Harvey. How are you getting on?

0:05:09 > 0:05:14OK. It's all running smoothly apart from this food dye.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17How pink do you want your rhubarb and custard to be?

0:05:17 > 0:05:18How pink do you want your fingers to be?

0:05:18 > 0:05:21- Because they're pink!- Erm...

0:05:21 > 0:05:22- Try stirring that in... - I think, yeah.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Just stir in what you've got on the stick first, yeah.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Because you never... It's pretty intense stuff, that.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31- What do you think of that colour? - It is a pretty good colour.

0:05:31 > 0:05:32Yeah?

0:05:33 > 0:05:36To get four equal sized sponges,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39both batters must be piped evenly into the Battenberg trays.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43Oh, my gosh!

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Disaster!

0:05:44 > 0:05:48The bakers must keep a steady hand and twist the bag gently

0:05:48 > 0:05:49to push the mixture through the nozzle.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54I'm messing up so bad!

0:05:54 > 0:05:57- Harvey, what's happening? - I don't know!

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Is this because Nadiya's in the tent?

0:06:02 > 0:06:04- No!- And I know you like Nadiya, don't you?

0:06:04 > 0:06:06Is it making you a bit of a fluster?

0:06:06 > 0:06:11No... Maybe. I'm not sure.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13- It's a disaster. - Oh, bless you!

0:06:15 > 0:06:19I'm just putting the mixture into the tray.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22I did use the piping bag. I'm just spreading it out a bit.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27I'm a little bit worried about my rhubarb one,

0:06:27 > 0:06:29cos I think there isn't enough mixture.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Remember, if you want to give this a try at home,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36make sure an adult's around who knows what you're up to.

0:06:38 > 0:06:39Round two.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44It's not piping correctly. Now these are going to be too thin.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46Oh, my gosh!

0:06:46 > 0:06:48What do I do?!

0:06:49 > 0:06:51I don't have enough.

0:06:51 > 0:06:52Ah, I found this.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57So I can try and squeeze that in here.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03- Joseph, how are you doing, mate? You all right?- I'm doing good.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05You had a little bit of a mishap at first. You had to start it again.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07But how's it going now? Are you back on track?

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- Yeah. It's in the oven now. - Oh, that's great!- That's good.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- You seem pretty calm.- Yeah. - Good. So what's the dream, Joseph?

0:07:13 > 0:07:15When you're a bit older, what do you want to do?

0:07:15 > 0:07:18- Do you want to be a baker? - That's the thing that I want to do

0:07:18 > 0:07:20if I can't do the thing I want to do.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Which is? - Be an astronaut.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25Oh! Nice work. You want to be an astronaut?

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Which planet would you like to visit first?

0:07:27 > 0:07:28- Pluto. - OK.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Maybe you could do your cake shop on Pluto.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32- Yeah, that'd be nice.- Yeah.

0:07:32 > 0:07:33The one that no-one visits.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35THEY LAUGH

0:07:35 > 0:07:37- We'd visit there. - We'll come, we'll come.

0:07:37 > 0:07:38- We'd visit.- Don't you worry!

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Bakers, you are halfway through.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44You've got 45 minutes left.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48So it might be worth getting something in the oven.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Not speaking to anyone in particular!

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Harvey!

0:07:51 > 0:07:54I'm going to get it in the oven, finally.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Well, they're looking quite good. They've risen nicely.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14They look all right, I suppose.

0:08:14 > 0:08:15Yeah.

0:08:18 > 0:08:19Come on!

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Aargh!

0:08:29 > 0:08:30Oh, gosh!

0:08:36 > 0:08:37They look like breadsticks.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50It's a disaster!

0:08:53 > 0:08:54Disaster!

0:08:57 > 0:08:58I feel really sorry for Harvey.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Because it's not going well for him.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Oh, it's aggressive.

0:09:05 > 0:09:06It's aggressive, it's aggressive!

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Ohhh!

0:09:08 > 0:09:09- Ha... - Yeah.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Just tap it out gently.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Tip tip tappy.

0:09:13 > 0:09:14Tippy tap tap tap.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Tap tap tap.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21- We don't want it...- Aargh!

0:09:21 > 0:09:24- What happened?- Gently, gently!

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Look. It's coming, it's coming.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29- Yes!- Yay! Whoo!

0:09:29 > 0:09:30- Look at that. - We have a baton.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Yeah!

0:09:34 > 0:09:3615 minutes left, bakers.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41The buttercream's to stick the cakes together

0:09:41 > 0:09:44and stick the marzipan to the cake.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48You have to put it on like bricks, cement.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55I'm trying to repair it by using my buttercream to stick it,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57without it breaking.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03OK. Rolling out the marzipan.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06I'm looking for a thickness of medium thin.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11Marzipan makes it taste sweeter,

0:10:11 > 0:10:14but you don't want it to be too sweet.

0:10:17 > 0:10:18I've done it, I've done it, I've done it.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20It's all right, it's all right.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24OK, bakers. You've got five minutes left.

0:10:31 > 0:10:32Please don't break.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36This is awful.

0:10:38 > 0:10:39The pink could be brighter.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44I'm just making the diamond pattern on the top.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Right, that's it, bakers.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Step away from your Battenberg creations.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02Could you please bring them up to the gingham altar

0:11:02 > 0:11:04and place them behind your picture.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07The challenges didn't go as well as I expected.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11I'm hoping they'll judge it more on taste than presentation.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14The judges are looking for four precise chequerboard squares

0:11:14 > 0:11:17with a thin, even layer of marzipan.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Sophie, this is a good Battenberg!

0:11:21 > 0:11:24It's equal quadrants.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Gorgeous crimping around the edge. The only thing I can see is that

0:11:27 > 0:11:31there's not a lot of buttercream in the cross section of the cake.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36I like your level of pink that you've put in for the rhubarb.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- I think that's just right.- I think that is really nicely baked cake,

0:11:39 > 0:11:40- Sophie.- Thank you.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42- So, Joseph.- You've got to say it,

0:11:42 > 0:11:44you've got a generous hand with the marzipan.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47What we didn't get is those equal quadrants.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50I think there wasn't enough batter in the tin to begin with,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52cos it had all gone up the piping bag.

0:11:55 > 0:11:56You can taste the rhubarb.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58I think just because it was so thin,

0:11:58 > 0:12:00it was slightly overbaked around the edge.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04But overall, Joseph, it's Battenberg-y, it tastes decent,

0:12:04 > 0:12:06but we'll look forward to some great things this afternoon.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08- I know. - Spaceman.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12Macy. That is a pretty good rendition

0:12:12 > 0:12:13of what we were looking for.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17The marzipan is equal and thin all the way round.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19If I were to say one tiny thing,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22I think we could have gone just a little bit pinker.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25I think you're a bit light on the colour. Let's go in.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32That is a really, really good rhubarb and custard Battenberg.

0:12:32 > 0:12:33- Well done, Macy.- Well done.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35Harvey.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- Yeah.- I know you got into a little bit of difficulty,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41but the main thing is you did get us something.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44We've got diminishing pink on this side, Harvey.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47- The pink's going down.- MARK: It's all on his hands, that's why!

0:12:47 > 0:12:48THEY LAUGH

0:12:50 > 0:12:54That's nice. I've got cake, I've got a bit of custard-y flavour,

0:12:54 > 0:12:55buttercream, marzipan.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Despite the struggles that you went through, you got it here.

0:12:58 > 0:12:59So well done.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04Nadiya and Allegra will now decide which of our two bakers

0:13:04 > 0:13:07have made the best Battenbergs.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10In no particular order, the first of our top two is...

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Macy. For delivering us a very precise,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16beautiful rhubarb and custard Battenberg.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18And the second person is

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Sophie. For giving us a thin,

0:13:21 > 0:13:23even layer of marzipan

0:13:23 > 0:13:26with beautiful crimping and decoration on top.

0:13:26 > 0:13:27Thank you.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Joseph, Harvey. Don't worry, it can all change.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32But right now, I think you deserve a bit of a break.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34- Come and taste your Battenbergs. - Go on!

0:13:36 > 0:13:38I'm really, really happy that Nadiya said

0:13:38 > 0:13:41that she liked the colour of my rhubarb.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Because I thought I'd actually put too much in.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46It was quite nerve-racking to have my bakes judged,

0:13:46 > 0:13:48because I've only had, like, criticism from my family.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54For the showstopper challenge,

0:13:54 > 0:13:57our bakers need to use a very special ingredient.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59- Yeast?- Nope.

0:13:59 > 0:14:00- Gelatine?- Nope.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03- Cream of tartar?- No!

0:14:03 > 0:14:05That's it, then. I give up, what is it?

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- Their face! - Oh!

0:14:15 > 0:14:16So, bakers.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19Any of you ever use one of these?

0:14:19 > 0:14:20Of course you have.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24Now, our judges don't want you to take a selfie.

0:14:24 > 0:14:25They want you to bake a selfie.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30Clever. Now, this selfie must be a cookie.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32It can be any flavour you want.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36However, it must be a whopping 30 centimetres.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39And it should have a picture of yourself on it.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42Now, you could be dancing on a cookie.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44You can be playing sport on a cookie.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46- Eating a cookie.- On a cookie?

0:14:46 > 0:14:47- Yeah.- Mad!

0:14:47 > 0:14:49You've got one and a half hours

0:14:49 > 0:14:51to complete the showstopper challenge.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53- On your marks,- get set,- bake!

0:14:57 > 0:15:00It is feeling a lot calmer in this challenge,

0:15:00 > 0:15:03because I know what I'm doing. I've practised it.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05I'm all good.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08Well, it's a selfie. So they can either just do their faces,

0:15:08 > 0:15:10or they can set it in a scenario.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12Hopefully, there'll be a bit of fun in it.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14There are going to be massive pitfalls when they are doing

0:15:14 > 0:15:18a giant cookie. We don't want them to overbake or underbake it.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21We really want to showcase some really nice flavours.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24So how are we going to pack that punch in just that one cookie?

0:15:27 > 0:15:30I'm making a ginger cookie.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33And the filling's going to be lime buttercream.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35I put lime and ginger because it's like

0:15:35 > 0:15:39a Caribbean kind of combination, and my dad's from Barbados.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Macy has double the work,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45because she's making two giant gingerbread cookies,

0:15:45 > 0:15:47which she'll sandwich together with her lime buttercream.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51Her face will be piped on top with chocolate buttercream.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53So what's the selfie, then? What's your picture on there?

0:15:53 > 0:15:55It's going to be my face.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57And then I'm going to use chocolate buttercream for my hair.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00- Nice.- And then I've got music notes that I made...

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- Right, because you sing. - Yeah.- Excellent.

0:16:03 > 0:16:04I really want to hear you sing.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06I can imagine that you're a very good singer.

0:16:06 > 0:16:07Stay, do you know that song?

0:16:07 > 0:16:09- Yeah, do it.- Bring it! - Give us a bit.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12# Not really sure how to feel about it

0:16:12 > 0:16:16# There's something in the way you move

0:16:16 > 0:16:20# Makes me feel like I can't live without you

0:16:20 > 0:16:23# And it takes me all the way

0:16:23 > 0:16:25# I want you to stay. #

0:16:25 > 0:16:27Yay! Macy!

0:16:27 > 0:16:29- That was amazing! - That was beautiful!

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Baking and singing, you've got it all.

0:16:33 > 0:16:38Like Macy, Harvey is also making a gingerbread cookie.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43At the moment, I'm mixing the flour, bicarbonate of soda

0:16:43 > 0:16:45and ginger together.

0:16:45 > 0:16:49My cookie selfie is ginger and orange, to represent my hair.

0:16:49 > 0:16:53Harvey's hair will be made from dyed white chocolate buttercream.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56He'll have liquorice glasses and chocolate chip freckles.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58To enhance the flavour of his gingerbread,

0:16:58 > 0:17:00he's adding orange extract.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03What's the vision of the final cookie?

0:17:03 > 0:17:06It's just going to be a massive version of my face.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08Brilliant! I like the face you've got,

0:17:08 > 0:17:10and the idea of a bigger one is just...

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- On a cookie.- On a cookie. Life could hardly get any better.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15Do you think it's flat, though? The whole thing?

0:17:15 > 0:17:18I think it's flat, I just need to maybe roll it a little bit more.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Yeah, I think that's not a bad idea, that.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23- Yeah.- Be careful not to get it too thin.

0:17:23 > 0:17:24Yeah.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32Sophie has chosen a softer texture for her cookie.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36I'm putting salted caramel, chocolate chips,

0:17:36 > 0:17:40banana and a salted crust on my cookie.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43Sophie's gooey salted caramel cookie

0:17:43 > 0:17:45will be topped with her face made from fondant.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47And like Macy, she'll be singing.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Oh, that looks like a nice, thick batter.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53I am intrigued. So what texture are you looking for

0:17:53 > 0:17:54once you've baked it?

0:17:54 > 0:17:57It's like the crust is quite hard on the outside.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00And then the middle's like soft and gooey in the middle

0:18:00 > 0:18:03- when you cut it. - So we're going to cut our cookie?

0:18:03 > 0:18:04Yeah.

0:18:04 > 0:18:05OK.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14My concern is Sophie's cookie is more of a cak-ie.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17And she did say she was going to cut it.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20We know it's going to be yummy. Is it going to hit the brief?

0:18:24 > 0:18:26My cookie's going to be gooey, not hard.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29And the way I've prevented that

0:18:29 > 0:18:32is to put the honey and the golden syrup in.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34My decoration's going to be a crescent moon

0:18:34 > 0:18:37with me in a spaceship.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39Because I would like to go to the moon.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Joseph the astronaut will be floating across

0:18:42 > 0:18:43a cream cheese frosting moon,

0:18:43 > 0:18:47set against a giant dark chocolate cookie sky.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49Speckled with white chocolate drops for the stars,

0:18:49 > 0:18:52and he's adding chilli chocolate for an extra kick.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54Can you handle your chilli?

0:18:54 > 0:18:57- Oh, yeah.- Yeah? - Where's the cookie right now,

0:18:57 > 0:19:00- apart from all over the table? - It's in there.- Is it in?- Yeah, yeah.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04Oh, wow! That is one big cookie!

0:19:04 > 0:19:07- Wow.- Hello! - Look at these faces.

0:19:07 > 0:19:08- Impressed.- Yeah.- Good.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20Right. The cookie cooks for 25 minutes.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26OK, bakers. You've had half your time.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28You've got 45 minutes left.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37Go on, you get it out. There you go, mate.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39Lovely. Smells good.

0:19:39 > 0:19:40Got it!

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Oh, my gosh. It's a bit cakey.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Dammit, it's burnt. It has burnt a tiny bit.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52- That's all right. - That doesn't look burnt to me.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Not burnt! It's just, you know...

0:19:54 > 0:19:55Crisp.

0:19:57 > 0:19:58While the cookies cool,

0:19:58 > 0:20:02the bakers move on to making their selfie decorations.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05I'm melting this white chocolate.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09To just put it in the buttercream for my hair.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12This is going to be the lime for the filling.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15To make sure you can taste the lime with the ginger,

0:20:15 > 0:20:18I'm adding both lime zest and lime juice.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22Are you all right?

0:20:22 > 0:20:25- I just spilled some icing sugar, it's fine.- Some?!

0:20:25 > 0:20:27It's not fun if it's not messy.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30I've done the piping on the outside,

0:20:30 > 0:20:34because when you have the other cookie on top, you can still see it.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40I think this is the right colour for my hair.

0:20:40 > 0:20:41It will do.

0:20:43 > 0:20:44Oh!

0:20:45 > 0:20:49I'm just making the roll-out icing for my face.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Sounds really weird saying that.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56I think art helps for my baking

0:20:56 > 0:20:58because the way that I present my bakes,

0:20:58 > 0:21:00like, is quite artistic.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03This is the Joseph and rocket ship.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06I've done the smile scary.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09I'm actually quite scared of it.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Hopefully someone eats it before I have to look at it more.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16OK, OK, OK, OK. I've forgotten what I have left to do now.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Eyes, face.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20I can't really have a face without eyes.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29These are my eyes that I've created out of white fondant,

0:21:29 > 0:21:33liquorice and another piece of liquorice.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35Liquorice is my dad's favourite,

0:21:35 > 0:21:37and I really want to do something for him.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41I've always liked everything to do with music.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43It's basically just sugar paper.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46I'm cutting a square out, and then I'm going to put it like

0:21:46 > 0:21:49in front of my face so it's like I'm singing but I'm not.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53I did my hair, like, the main thing,

0:21:53 > 0:21:56because it's what you first see when you look at me.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00OK, bakers. I don't want to alarm you,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03but you've got five minutes left. Finishing touches, I reckon.

0:22:03 > 0:22:04Aargh!

0:22:06 > 0:22:09Piping seems to be my nemesis today.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16Oh, my gosh. Right, OK. Hurry up, hurry up, hurry up, Sophie.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18- Hurry up.- Just ignore that.

0:22:23 > 0:22:27I've put a microphone on it, and I've put in music notes.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30- HARVEY:- Starting to get stressful up in here.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Yeah, I knew it wasn't going to fit.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41I'm just going to have to leave it hanging off.

0:22:41 > 0:22:42We keep it in the baking paper.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46- That is it. Bakers, stop what you are doing!- Yes!

0:22:46 > 0:22:48You are done with the cookies!

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Boom!

0:23:05 > 0:23:07I'm scared it's too hard.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Hopefully the decoration and maybe

0:23:09 > 0:23:11the flavours

0:23:11 > 0:23:13saved my life.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18There's an awful lot going on in there. It's got textures,

0:23:18 > 0:23:20it's got all the little bits of white chocolate in it.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23It looks very, very noshable.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26We can't get away from the fact that it's a little bit burnt around here.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28I'm going to go for a bit with some moon on it.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34- That is delicious.- Sometimes you think chocolate and chilli

0:23:34 > 0:23:36and it's too much, but that is just perfect.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Very, very impressive effort.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47That is certainly a selfie cookie.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Piping's brilliant. Really good.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52Can I have a giant mug of tea, please?

0:23:52 > 0:23:54LAUGHTER

0:23:54 > 0:23:56Oh. You can tell just by looking from the outside,

0:23:56 > 0:23:59that is a lovely, even bake.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02The combination of the ginger and the lime,

0:24:02 > 0:24:06- it's like the tropics in my mouth. - Very evenly rolled as well.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09The whole thing is very perfectly, professionally put together.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11- Thank you very much indeed, Macy. - Thank you.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18That challenge went slightly better than the other one did.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21I didn't think I was going to get the liquorice glasses done,

0:24:21 > 0:24:22but I apparently did.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27I feel like I've got double vision!

0:24:27 > 0:24:28LAUGHTER

0:24:28 > 0:24:30I love all of it. The hair is just so you.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Obviously the specs, your lovely little blue peepers there.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37But this is just gorgeous detail here on the freckles.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38Just absolutely lovely.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41Sorry about this. Going straight in.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45- Mmm.- I can taste that orange.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47That's delicious! You've got that lovely crisp edge,

0:24:47 > 0:24:49and all that lovely soft in the middle.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53There's a very slight unevenness to the roll, but all in all, Harvey,

0:24:53 > 0:24:57that's a hilariously brilliant, wonderful selfie cookie biscuit.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05I was rushing a bit, but I think they'll like the flavours,

0:25:05 > 0:25:07so hopefully that'll make up

0:25:07 > 0:25:09for anything else!

0:25:09 > 0:25:11It's a whole picture, isn't it?

0:25:11 > 0:25:14It's all about you. You've got your musical notes.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16We've got a bunch of singers in here today, haven't we?

0:25:16 > 0:25:18- A lot of singers in here today. - SAM: And us. MARK:- And us. Well...

0:25:18 > 0:25:21- Ex... - Anyway.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23We've been debating as we've been watching you make it

0:25:23 > 0:25:25whether it's a cookie or a cake-y.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28And we've decided it's a cakey cookie, which is good.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30Look at the goo factor.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34- I think it's a little underbaked there, Sophie.- Yeah.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39You know your flavour combinations.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Banana, chocolate, nuts,

0:25:41 > 0:25:42salted caramel and salt on the edge.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45I mean, that is delicious and you should be really proud.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54Yours was really good, with that icing on yours looked so good.

0:25:54 > 0:25:55Like, the hair.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01This morning, the technical, quite difficult, I thought.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04We've got Joseph and Harvey, who really did struggle.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07And then on the other hand, you've got Macy and Sophie,

0:26:07 > 0:26:10who did extraordinarily well.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13But Joseph this afternoon made it very difficult for you.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16He really did. That is an extraordinary cookie.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Macy's cookie is just a very professional job.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20She's decorated it really, really well.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23- And how about Sophie? - She delivered us some really,

0:26:23 > 0:26:25really good flavours and she did really well in the technical.

0:26:25 > 0:26:29So Nadiya and I need to go and work this through.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34Well done, bakers.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36You have all done fantastically well.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40This decision has been incredibly difficult.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44They have chosen their baker,

0:26:44 > 0:26:47and this person produced

0:26:47 > 0:26:50an extraordinary technical this morning.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53And a perfectly professional showstopper.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59The baker going through to the quarterfinal is...

0:27:06 > 0:27:07Macy!

0:27:07 > 0:27:09APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:27:11 > 0:27:13- Thank you.- Happy?

0:27:13 > 0:27:15I think my family will be really happy for me

0:27:15 > 0:27:20when they find out that I've won and I'm going into the quarterfinals.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23We had a cracking bunch of kids in the tent today.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25Standard was really high.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27But she showed us so many skills.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30There was no way she wasn't going to make it through.

0:27:30 > 0:27:31I'm really, really pleased that

0:27:31 > 0:27:33I'm going to get to come back to the Bake Off tent.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37But we've all made friends. I'm sure we will keep in touch.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41Next time, the bakers have a hairy time...

0:27:41 > 0:27:42See if it falls.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45They get their hands on paints and brushes...

0:27:45 > 0:27:48Putting the green around the ladybird as if it's grass.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51..for showstoppers that are a work of art.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54My stress level's round about 10 at the moment!
