0:00:16 > 0:00:21Now judges John Torode and Donal Skehan have to decide who

0:00:21 > 0:00:27will be good enough to win the title of Junior MasterChef Champion 2014.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Start of a new day, four young cooks who want to show us

0:00:40 > 0:00:43exactly how good they really are.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45We don't know what's coming through that door,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47but I'm really excited to see what they cook up today.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53First, they'll have to create their ultimate pancakes

0:00:53 > 0:00:57before cooking their own incredible dishes.

0:00:57 > 0:01:02Competing in today's heat are Hannah, Safiyyah, Josh, and Aykan.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Going to the MasterChef kitchen is going to make me really,

0:01:06 > 0:01:10really excited and a little bit nervous.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15I want to, like, test my limits, see how far I can actually go.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18I just love cooking, yeah, so I want to see how good I am.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25I'm just going to enjoy it cos this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28I'm just going to try my hardest

0:01:28 > 0:01:31but still have fun at the same time... Multitasking.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38First up, we have a brilliant little test.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41They're going to cook for us their ultimate pancakes,

0:01:41 > 0:01:42two pancakes, in fact.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45We're going to get a savoury one and a sweet one.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Very excited, I love pancakes.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Before they do that, you and I are going to have a go.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51- Are you up for the challenge?- Yeah!

0:01:51 > 0:01:53- Well, wash your hands, then. - Let's do it!

0:01:57 > 0:02:01To create their ultimate pancakes, the contestants will be given

0:02:01 > 0:02:03three trays with ingredients.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06One contains the batter mix for the pancakes,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08one has the savoury ingredients,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10the other the sweet.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14To make the pancake batter,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17flour and eggs are mixed together with milk.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24I'm just adding a little bit of chives to the pancake batter itself

0:02:24 > 0:02:26so you get these little hits of green throughout it.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Ah, clever!

0:02:28 > 0:02:30So I put a little tiny bit of oil in the mixture

0:02:30 > 0:02:32and that way it never sticks to the pan.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34And what happens if the pancake sticks to the roof

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- when you throw it up?- Well, see, I don't throw things in the roof.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44Hang on. Oh, look at that!

0:02:44 > 0:02:46- You've got to flip yours there.- No.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47- Come on!- What?

0:02:47 > 0:02:49- Go on, go on.- You mean like this?

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Yeah! Hey! That's pretty good going.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Our four cooks have to be very careful

0:02:55 > 0:02:59they don't burn their pancakes, just a light brown colouring.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11Nice!

0:03:21 > 0:03:23I can't wait to see what they're going to do.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Their personalities will definitely shine through on this one.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27They sure will.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44Hi, guys! This is your first test.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47The ultimate pancake.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51But we're not going to get you to do just one pancake,

0:03:51 > 0:03:54we want two pancakes - one savoury and one sweet.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58You've got 50 minutes. Let's cook!

0:03:59 > 0:04:03Remember, if you try this at home, make sure you have a

0:04:03 > 0:04:04responsible adult with you.

0:04:12 > 0:04:1611-year-old Safiyyah lives in Harrow and has been practising for

0:04:16 > 0:04:19MasterChef by cooking two meals every day.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25I like cooking a range of foods, like, I do Thai,

0:04:25 > 0:04:27I do curries, I do Indian.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30But I like probably cooking Chinese, actually.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Safiyyah, how did you learn how to cook?

0:04:35 > 0:04:39It was my mum who mainly taught me, cos I started at the age of six.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41That was one of the first things I made, actually,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44pancakes and, like, frying chips and things like that.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46- And then...sorry that was at three. - Wow.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49And then at six, I was able to actually cook for myself.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51My mum sort of sometimes left me in the kitchen,

0:04:51 > 0:04:52depending on what I was making.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55- So you do lots and lots of cooking, don't you?- Yes.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57I'll expect great things from you, Safiyyah.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Safiyyah's take on her two pancakes is really interesting.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10Both for the sweet and the savoury, she's put stuff inside the batter.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14So the savoury one, we've got corn running through it,

0:05:14 > 0:05:17and with the sweet one, Safiyyah's put berries and nuts.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Really, really clever.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Ten-year-old Aykan is from North London.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31He enjoys cooking savoury dishes, but admits to having a bit of

0:05:31 > 0:05:32a sweet tooth.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35I love cooking desserts.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39They have sugar in and they always make smiles on people's faces.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41(74.)

0:05:43 > 0:05:45What do you think of the first test?

0:05:45 > 0:05:46Good, actually.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48I think I'll find it pretty good cos I've been cooking

0:05:48 > 0:05:50pancakes for most of my life.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Once, I was at a sleepover

0:05:52 > 0:05:56and I cooked pancakes for everybody in the morning.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Who taught you how to cook?

0:05:58 > 0:06:01My dad was the one who taught me how to cook

0:06:01 > 0:06:03cos he owned a restaurant.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05- Your dad owned a restaurant?- Yeah.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07And what sort of food does he like to cook?

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Turkish. Mediterranean, cos he's Turkish.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13So, Aykan, we might expect some pancakes with a Turkish flair, then?

0:06:13 > 0:06:16In Turkey they don't have pancakes as much,

0:06:16 > 0:06:18you normally get waffles instead.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23I don't think Aykan's quite made up his mind just yet.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25I know he's going to use the banana,

0:06:25 > 0:06:28and I'm can see he's got a bowl of chocolate on there, so hopefully

0:06:28 > 0:06:31the chocolate's going in the sweet one and not the savoury one.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33But I think when he makes up his mind,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36he's a little dynamo in the kitchen and he's getting straight to it.

0:06:38 > 0:06:3920 minutes gone.

0:06:41 > 0:06:4511-year-old Hannah from Bristol was just eight when she started

0:06:45 > 0:06:47cooking with her grandmother.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49But her whole family love to cook.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Basically my dad, my mum, and my grandma all inspired me.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54My dad because he helps me make curries.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57My mum's just the general cook so she teaches me,

0:06:57 > 0:06:59like, how to make pastry.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00And my grandma's the complicated one,

0:07:00 > 0:07:04so she teaches me how to make duck's tongues and upside down cakes.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Hannah, you motored away.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12We noticed you getting in really fast, peeling your apples.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13Yeah.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15I put it in the water so it didn't go brown.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19You obviously love to cook. What other hobbies do you have?

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Well, I play badminton for the county.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- For the county?- Yeah.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25That's amazing!

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Which would you prefer to be - a cook or a badminton player?

0:07:28 > 0:07:29Probably a cook.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37I love how Hannah talks about food, she's really confident.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Apple and cinnamon, I think it's a great marriage

0:07:39 > 0:07:41if it's made really, really well, and I love her savoury filling

0:07:41 > 0:07:45of her pancake which is the smoked salmon with feta cheese and chives.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Inventive, I mean, really inventive.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57Nine-year-old Josh once cooked for ten people and already has

0:07:57 > 0:08:00his own signature dish.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04I'm an expert at doing a Victorian sandwich because I used to do

0:08:04 > 0:08:08it with my sisters and I started doing it by myself.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12Once, I put raspberry and apricot jam into it.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18- How you doing, Josh?- Good, thank you.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Are you nervous to be in the Junior MasterChef kitchen?

0:08:20 > 0:08:22No. I'm really excited.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24What do you make of this first test, then?

0:08:24 > 0:08:28I've never made a pancake before, but I've watched people do it

0:08:28 > 0:08:30and I've got ideas from them.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32- Have you eaten pancakes before?- Yeah.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35How many pancakes do you think you've eaten in your life, Josh?

0:08:35 > 0:08:36About 50.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42Josh is like a little steam train in the kitchen today.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46He's already plated up. I like his confidence.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Five minutes left!

0:08:58 > 0:08:59Finishing touches, guys.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Ahh, clever you!

0:09:10 > 0:09:13That's it, time's up. Step away from your benches.

0:09:15 > 0:09:16It's now judgment time.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22Safiyyah has made a sweetcorn batter pancake filled with prawns,

0:09:22 > 0:09:25cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and herbs,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28served with a side salad of tomato and feta.

0:09:29 > 0:09:34Her sweet pancake combines a filling of berries and nuts and is

0:09:34 > 0:09:35served with a dollop of cream.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45I reckon your savoury pancake with the sweetcorn going

0:09:45 > 0:09:47through it, is a lovely, lovely thing.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50I think that salad on the side with the feta cheese,

0:09:50 > 0:09:52it's really tasty and really well done.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55And then over to your sweet one.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58This is a proper, proper dessert pancake.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00You've got creaminess from the cream,

0:10:00 > 0:10:03you've got that lovely tart sweetness from those berries,

0:10:03 > 0:10:06and the nice little touch of those fresh nuts over the top.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Cooking in the MasterChef kitchen compared to home,

0:10:10 > 0:10:13it just feels absolutely amazing.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16It's just amazing to meet the judges and it's, like, really exciting.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Aykan's sweet pancake has melted chocolate with icing sugar

0:10:21 > 0:10:23and strawberries.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26His savoury pancake contains feta cheese

0:10:26 > 0:10:28with strawberries on the side.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Savoury one's got strawberries in, as well?

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Mm, if you want it, really.

0:10:32 > 0:10:33Oh, I see. OK, fine.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45For me, now, the savoury mixture of feta cheese

0:10:45 > 0:10:47and the strawberries, I'm not a big fan of it.

0:10:47 > 0:10:52But however, you have clawed it back with that amazing chocolate pancake.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55You've got that sweetness and tartness from the strawberries.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57It works absolutely beautifully.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00Aykan, strawberries with feta cheese for many people might be

0:11:00 > 0:11:03a bit out there, I think it's a daring combination,

0:11:03 > 0:11:05and if people want to enjoy it, they can.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09Your chocolate pancake - very simple, very classic,

0:11:09 > 0:11:12but extremely tasty, and this goes to prove just with

0:11:12 > 0:11:15a couple of ingredients, you can make something really wonderful.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Thanks.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19I'm really excited for the next challenge

0:11:19 > 0:11:21and I think I'm going to do really well

0:11:21 > 0:11:24because I've been training for that one a lot, actually.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Hannah, how you doing?

0:11:28 > 0:11:29Yeah. I'm feeling good.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Hannah's savoury pancake has a filling of feta cheese,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37courgette, salmon, and chives.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41Her sweet pancake has been filled with apple and cinnamon.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51What I do now know about you as a cook is you understand

0:11:51 > 0:11:53how flavours marry together.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57The cheese and the chives with the smoked salmon is a wonderful thing.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Apple and cinnamon - marriage made in heaven.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04The way in which you merge flavours is brilliant.

0:12:04 > 0:12:05Thank you.

0:12:05 > 0:12:10Hannah, your savoury one is so rich from that lovely smoked salmon.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13You've got saltiness, you've got smokiness... Very, very tasty.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15- Well done.- Thank you.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19I know it's a competition, but they just feel like your friends.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22It's just really nice to be in the kitchen with them.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Josh, two of the prettiest,

0:12:26 > 0:12:29petit pancakes I have ever seen in my life.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Josh has topped his savoury pancake with tomatoes, courgettes,

0:12:33 > 0:12:35asparagus, and mushrooms.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40His sweet pancake has banana, chocolate, raspberries,

0:12:40 > 0:12:42blueberries, and cherries.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52I like that you've let the ingredients speak for themselves.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56The bananas and the chocolate and that maple syrup is lovely.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58On your savoury one, the fresh tomatoes

0:12:58 > 0:13:03and a little bit of courgette and asparagus is a lovely fresh thing.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05You've got that sweet one with the chocolate, the bananas, all

0:13:05 > 0:13:09those berries. These are the sort of ingredients I love on a pancake.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12The only thing I'd pick up on is maybe cooking all

0:13:12 > 0:13:13the ingredients for your savoury one.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16But altogether two really pretty pancakes. Well done.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18Thank you.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21I feel really happy about what I've done

0:13:21 > 0:13:23because it was my first pancake I've ever made.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33In this next round, you're going to have one hour to cook up two

0:13:33 > 0:13:36beautiful dishes of your own food.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Your two courses, ladies and gentlemen, let's cook!

0:13:42 > 0:13:46They now need to showcase their best dishes, because at the end,

0:13:46 > 0:13:49only one of them will go through to the semifinal.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Aykan, noticed you've got so much time that you're taking

0:13:56 > 0:13:58a little coffee break. What's the coffee all about?

0:13:58 > 0:14:01Well, the coffee's actually for the lady fingers in my tiramisu.

0:14:01 > 0:14:05Tiramisu is one of my favourite desserts of all time.

0:14:05 > 0:14:06What's for your main course, then?

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Sultan's Delight - it's a Turkish dish,

0:14:08 > 0:14:12and in the Ottoman Empire, one of the sultan's wife wanted something

0:14:12 > 0:14:16new to eat. And the cook gave her that, and she really liked it.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- I'm very, very intrigued.- Thanks.

0:14:22 > 0:14:23Aykan is giving us

0:14:23 > 0:14:26something called Sultan's Delight, which is a stew made from lamb

0:14:26 > 0:14:30and onions, and it's served with a creamy aubergine mixed with cheese.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33I hope I'll be delighted as the sultan was

0:14:33 > 0:14:35when he first got this served up to him.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40He's making for his dessert a big creamy tiramisu.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44I'm looking for wonderful, creamy mascarpone,

0:14:44 > 0:14:47nicely soaked biscuits...

0:14:47 > 0:14:50and that chocolate flavour to bring it altogether.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Hannah, what part of the world are you going to transport us

0:14:57 > 0:14:59to with your food today?

0:14:59 > 0:15:00- The sea.- The sea!

0:15:00 > 0:15:03Are these the sort of ingredients you like to cook with?

0:15:03 > 0:15:04Yeah, I like to cook with seafood.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Hannah, why is this semifinal place so important to you?

0:15:07 > 0:15:09I just want to cook,

0:15:09 > 0:15:12and cook to show you how I'm progressing in my cooking.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14- Good luck.- Thanks.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Hannah is seriously out to impress.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20That starter of scallops.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25We've got chorizo, we've got black pudding,

0:15:25 > 0:15:27and we've got a pea and mint puree.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31She is really, really showing skill here.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37For main course, we have got a piece of cod

0:15:37 > 0:15:41with a sundried tomato and black olive tapenade,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45and she's serving that with rosemary potatoes and sprouting broccoli.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49The one thing she has to really watch with that...

0:15:49 > 0:15:53You don't want to overpower that roast cod with too much salt.

0:15:53 > 0:15:54It should be nice and light.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Safiyyah, your bench is awash with spices.

0:16:02 > 0:16:03What are we going to get from you?

0:16:03 > 0:16:06For my main, I'm doing a lamb biryani.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08For dessert, a pistachio and cardamom cake

0:16:08 > 0:16:10served with vanilla Chantilly cream.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13How are you going to get a biryani done

0:16:13 > 0:16:15in the amount of time you've got?

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Oh, cos I'm using a pressure cooker. This was actually my mum's recipe.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Good thing if it doesn't go right, you just blame your mum.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27Safiyyah has got an Aladdin's cave of wonderful ingredients,

0:16:27 > 0:16:29I mean, really beautiful.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31She's promising us a lamb biryani.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34A biryani is meat cooked with rice.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Safiyyah is using a pressure cooker

0:16:37 > 0:16:40because she has to cook that meat very, very quickly.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42I just hope it's quick enough.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47For her dessert, she's got a pistachio and cardamom cake.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51It's going to be served up with some vanilla Chantilly cream.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53I cannot wait to try it.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Josh, what would a place in the semifinal

0:17:00 > 0:17:02of Junior MasterChef mean to you?

0:17:02 > 0:17:05It will show that I'm a better cook than my sister.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08- To beat your sister?- Yeah. - I like your style.

0:17:08 > 0:17:09What sort of food does your sister cook?

0:17:09 > 0:17:11She hasn't been really cooking much

0:17:11 > 0:17:14because I've been taking over the kitchen.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17She makes, basically, cakes, but they're not that good.

0:17:19 > 0:17:23Josh has promised us a tomato tarte tatin with puff pastry

0:17:23 > 0:17:25and tomatoes and balsamic vinegar.

0:17:25 > 0:17:29Could be a lovely thing, as long as that pastry is lovely and crispy.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34For a main course, we've got a rack of lamb.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37It's actually a really difficult thing to get right.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40So many times I've seen it undercooked.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43He's going to serve it up with a potato and beetroot mash.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45I've never seen those two combined.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49I wonder what sort of colour that goes.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56You have just seven minutes left!

0:17:58 > 0:18:02I think it's extraordinary, there's food from all around the world.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04We've got Italy, we've got India, we've got Turkey,

0:18:04 > 0:18:09we've got the Mediterranean, we've even got some English classics.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13This is a brilliant day. This is what Junior MasterChef is all about.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22That's it, time's up.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Aykan's main dish is Sultan's Delight,

0:18:30 > 0:18:34a lamb stew with onions, tomatoes, cheese and aubergine.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45I'm very pleased that the lamb is wonderful and soft

0:18:45 > 0:18:47in that mixture of onions and tomato.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51The cheese is almost taking over the dish completely,

0:18:51 > 0:18:53maybe a little bit overpowering. But the aubergine

0:18:53 > 0:18:58I will be trying myself, cos I think that's a really clever thing.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Aykan, this is a really interesting dish

0:19:00 > 0:19:02and one I haven't tasted before.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05The lamb is really, really sweet and is complimented by those aubergines.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08And if John's going to try it at home, I'm going to try it, too.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12For dessert, Aykan has made the classic Italian dessert,

0:19:12 > 0:19:17tiramisu, with coffee-infused biscuits and strawberries.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24I love that you've added the chocolate there,

0:19:24 > 0:19:26and my secret ingredient

0:19:26 > 0:19:29when I make a tiramisu is always some shavings of dark chocolate.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31So for me, this is a really good tiramisu.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32Well done.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34Thanks.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Really packs a punch, that tiramisu of yours.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40I can taste the coffee, which is very, very strong and quite bitter.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43For me, I like strawberries with chocolate.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46strawberries and coffee I find a little bit strange.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49However, well presented, well thought out

0:19:49 > 0:19:51and I like the fact that you're trying something different.

0:19:51 > 0:19:52I love your confidence.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Thanks.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56The judges liked my food.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58They said there were bad bits in it,

0:19:58 > 0:20:01but otherwise they said good things about it most of the time.

0:20:03 > 0:20:07Hannah has made a starter of seared scallops three ways.

0:20:07 > 0:20:11One with Spanish sausage chorizo, one with black pudding,

0:20:11 > 0:20:13and one with minted pea puree,

0:20:13 > 0:20:16all covered with a creamy mushroom sauce.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22Scallops are cooked really nicely,

0:20:22 > 0:20:25that butter across the top making them lovely and golden.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27Your sauce is made really well, creamy and rich

0:20:27 > 0:20:29and woody from the mushrooms.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32And I like the fact you're daring to play with lots of different things.

0:20:32 > 0:20:33Thanks.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36I love that pea and mint puree.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38You have got that to absolute perfection.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42Really smooth and really refreshing, and that's exactly what a pea

0:20:42 > 0:20:44and mint puree should be.

0:20:44 > 0:20:45- I really like this.- Thanks.

0:20:47 > 0:20:52For her main, Hannah is serving roasted cod wrapped in ham,

0:20:52 > 0:20:55topped with a sundried tomato and olive tapenade,

0:20:55 > 0:20:58accompanied by salted rosemary potatoes and broccoli.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06The fish itself has been well protected by that lovely ham

0:21:06 > 0:21:10round the outside of it, and it's cooked really, really well.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13And then we've got sundried tomatoes, salty olives, and capers.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16It's becoming a little bit over-seasoned.

0:21:16 > 0:21:17Take one thing back a little bit.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20The thing about this is, and I think John's right,

0:21:20 > 0:21:24you've got lots of salt in there, so you need to strip it back just

0:21:24 > 0:21:28that tiny bit, but you've cooked that piece of fish to perfection.

0:21:28 > 0:21:29Thank you.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35It's just amazing hearing that from two really well-known people.

0:21:38 > 0:21:43For his starter, Josh has made a roasted tomato tarte tatin.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53You've got really nice fluffy puff pastry sides

0:21:53 > 0:21:56and that really nice caramelised, sweet tomato.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Really love that.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Very, very clever, because only a couple of ingredients put

0:22:01 > 0:22:04together and you have wonderful, wonderful flavour.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07The pastry on the outside, I think, is a lovely thing.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09In the middle, a bit soggy.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11You need to cook it in the oven just a little bit longer.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16Josh's main is a roasted rack of lamb

0:22:16 > 0:22:19with a beetroot and potato mash.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Josh, I think you know

0:22:25 > 0:22:27that some of your lamb is probably not quite cooked enough.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30It's not a disaster by any stretch of the imagination,

0:22:30 > 0:22:32cos of all the hard work you've done.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34Beetroot and potato puree, a new one on me.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36It's a vibrant looking plate.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Cook the lamb a little bit longer

0:22:38 > 0:22:41and maybe just do a little bit more seasoning in your potato mixture.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43OK.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45I really like the mash. I think it needs a little bit of butter

0:22:45 > 0:22:47and it needs a bit of sea salt and black pepper,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50but really, more than anything, I think the colour is great.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54You've got wild colour on this dish and it looks really good.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56Thank you.

0:22:56 > 0:23:01I'm feeling quite proud, but still a bit annoyed with myself.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08Safiyyah has made lamb biryani served with a mint raita.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17Your lamb is as soft as you like.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20It's really well spiced, it's really well seasoned.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23Your rice is beautifully cooked and lovely and fluffy.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26I am mightily impressed. Good job.

0:23:27 > 0:23:32That lamb is so beautifully cooked! I cannot believe how tender it is.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36But not only that, you have these wonderful spices wafting through,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40and then you cool it all down with that fantastic herby raita.

0:23:40 > 0:23:41Well done.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46For dessert, Safiyyah has made a pistachio and cardamom cake

0:23:46 > 0:23:50served with crushed pistachios and vanilla Chantilly cream.

0:23:54 > 0:23:59Safiyyah, you have a cake which is perfumed with that cardamom

0:23:59 > 0:24:00running through it.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03You have a really sweetly spiced cream which is soft

0:24:03 > 0:24:05and voluptuous alongside it. I really like this.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10You've got the lovely flavour of those nuts, pistachio nuts,

0:24:10 > 0:24:13which are very, very rich with the cake itself, which I really like.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15I think it's a lovely, lovely texture.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17That is a dessert that I love to eat.

0:24:17 > 0:24:18Thank you.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22I just feel ecstatic. I'm really happy.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27The cooking is over and now the waiting begins.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32I think I cut my lamb a bit too big.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35Who will become the next semi-finalist

0:24:35 > 0:24:38for Junior MasterChef 2014?

0:24:38 > 0:24:41I over-seasoned, but you can't really over-season.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45I think a very, very interesting day indeed.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Our four cooks have excelled themselves.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51That last round, that has really upped the ante.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53Early this morning, their ultimate pancakes,

0:24:53 > 0:24:56all four of them did very well. No real mishaps.

0:24:56 > 0:25:00So really it comes down to their own two dishes.

0:25:00 > 0:25:04Josh, his lamb with the beetroot potato mash.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06The lamb could have been cooked a little bit more.

0:25:06 > 0:25:10But he brought it back with that lovely tomato tarte tatin -

0:25:10 > 0:25:11a really good effort.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14I really want to stay in this competition

0:25:14 > 0:25:17because it will mean so much to me.

0:25:17 > 0:25:18Hannah is a clever cook.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20She's a cook who thinks about her food.

0:25:20 > 0:25:24First up, we had those scallops, and not content with serving us up

0:25:24 > 0:25:26one scallop, she served us up three.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28And then we had a piece of cod wrapped in ham.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31It was beautifully cooked but maybe just a little bit

0:25:31 > 0:25:35overpowered by the salty olives and the salty sundried tomatoes.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38I would like to get through, but if someone else gets through,

0:25:38 > 0:25:41they were all really good, so I don't really mind.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44The two dishes Aykan cooked for us were really interesting.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47We had Turkish on one side and Italian on the other.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51The Turkish influence had roasted aubergines with cheese -

0:25:51 > 0:25:54a really strange combination which I haven't seen before.

0:25:54 > 0:25:58Tiramisu was great - chocolate, coffee, sweet, creamy,

0:25:58 > 0:26:01wonderful, but the strawberries didn't need to be there.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05I think I did really good and I'm really proud.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07If I get through, I'll just be really happy.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10Safiyyah blew me away with that lamb biryani.

0:26:10 > 0:26:14I wasn't expecting her to get that lamb shoulder cooked to perfection

0:26:14 > 0:26:17and nice and tender, but she totally delivered.

0:26:17 > 0:26:18The cake, I thought, was wonderful.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22With cardamom and pistachio nuts, soft and spongy, served with

0:26:22 > 0:26:25a cream which was so full of vanilla, it almost sank Madagascar.

0:26:25 > 0:26:29I want to stay in this competition a million out of, like, ten.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31That would just be absolutely amazing.

0:26:32 > 0:26:37So four good cooks, just one semifinal place. Who takes it?

0:26:37 > 0:26:39I've got one.

0:26:39 > 0:26:40I've got one, too.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53You guys should all be seriously proud of yourselves.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55The toughest decision for us

0:26:55 > 0:26:57is to only take one of you through to the semifinal.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Our semi-finalist...

0:27:05 > 0:27:06..is Safiyyah.

0:27:08 > 0:27:09Congratulations.

0:27:15 > 0:27:18Being on Junior MasterChef has really done good for me.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20I really know I can cook now.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25I've learnt - don't hold back on your flavours, just go for it.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31I'm really pleased to get onto Junior MasterChef.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34I wanted to see John Torode and Donal,

0:27:34 > 0:27:38and it's just been really exciting.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Junior MasterChef semi-finalist.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44It feels amazing!

0:27:44 > 0:27:45I'm actually a bit shocked.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49Just amazed, happy, thrilled, everything, really, in one go.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54Safiyyah will be back for the semifinals.

0:27:54 > 0:27:58Next, four more talented cooks begin their quest to become

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Junior MasterChef Champion 2014.

0:28:01 > 0:28:05There's meat in there, there's a lot of technique, and it's yummy.

0:28:05 > 0:28:06Can you spin a pizza?
