0:00:03 > 0:00:07Pets, wildlife and all sorts of other creatures are in trouble.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12The nation's vets and animal carers need assistance.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14And now thanks to you lot...

0:00:14 > 0:00:15BOTH: They've got it.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20When we yelled "help," you didn't let us down.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24And we've got a network of volunteer junior vets.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28- On call and standing by. - Ready to jump in.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31And fix up ill and injured animals.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34- Whatever they are... - Wherever they are.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Today, a poorly pony.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56- A noisy pig.- And a bouncy dog.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Good girl!

0:01:00 > 0:01:02I'm ready for another day fixing

0:01:02 > 0:01:05animals at this vet in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08You know what? I don't even need the junior vets today.

0:01:08 > 0:01:09I got this covered.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15On second thoughts. I'm going to need them.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19BOTH: We are junior vets standing by.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21I'd like to work with animals when I'm older,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23but I also love baking too.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28I love all animals.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31But gory operations kind of freak me out.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33It's pretty busy in there today, junior vets.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36I'll tell you what. Hannah, are you any good at organising?

0:01:36 > 0:01:39- I'm super organised.- Yeah?- Yeah, colour code everything.- Oh, right.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43What about you, Abi? I hear you like baking and animals.

0:01:43 > 0:01:44Are you going to combine the two?

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Free-range produce. Maybe live on a farm.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49That sounds pretty good.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Right. Are you ready to help some animals, girls?

0:01:51 > 0:01:53- Mm-hm.- Yes.- All right, let's do this.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56Hold up. We're going the wrong way.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03The staff at Galedin Vets get their fair share of unusual cases

0:02:03 > 0:02:07to sort out. And what's this? An emergency already.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Roger the dog's in trouble.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Don't worry, vet David, me and junior vets are on it.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17This is Roger. He's a one-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22And at the weekend the owners saw him on the beach eat a tennis ball.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26He also ate an insole this morning.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29So it can't come out the front, it can't come out the back,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31so you've got to open him up?

0:02:31 > 0:02:34If we make him vomit there's a very significant risk he could choke,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37so we're going to have to remove it surgically.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38How you feeling, junior vets?

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Just feel sorry for him. He just wanted to eat a tennis ball.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Hey, Lesley, what's the score with naughty Roger?

0:02:46 > 0:02:49He likes tennis balls, any tennis ball.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53He'll find it in the undergrowth in the river.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56I don't know how he sniffs them out. He just manages it.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Don't worry, Lesley.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02My junior vets have their eye on the ball.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04No, I mean it, they really have.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06This is a side-on view of his abdomen.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09There's some food in the stomach, which is this morning's breakfast.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13And then this is the tennis ball here.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16I was quite impressed that he could eat a tennis ball, to be fair.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20- Yeah, but he'd done that so many times before, didn't he?- Yeah.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24Roger's making a habit of this, but this time it's serious.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26If you didn't get the tennis ball out, what would happen?

0:03:26 > 0:03:29As soon as that tennis ball tries to move into the small intestine,

0:03:29 > 0:03:33which is a much narrower tube here, it's going to block it.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38Don't worry, Roger. Let's get the ball rolling.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Vets are a clever bunch.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46They always have to expect the unexpected,

0:03:46 > 0:03:49from different breeds to different species.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50No two days are ever the same,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53so our junior vets will have to be ready for anything.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Well, are you?

0:03:56 > 0:03:58BOTH: Junior vets standing by.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00I have always loved animals.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02That's why I want to become a vet.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07My grandparent's cat Bing is my favourite animal in the whole world.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09So, junior vets, big day today.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12Dystance, why do you want to be a vet so much?

0:04:12 > 0:04:15I love animals. They're so cute and I love helping them.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18And, Isabelle, apparently you're really,

0:04:18 > 0:04:23- really spoiling your grandparent's cat. Is that right?- Yes, so I am.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27I make mazes for him and toys and he really enjoys them.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Spoiling your cat by putting him in a maze. Sounds really good.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34I think there should be animals here who will be in need of help.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36- Are we ready to help them out today? BOTH:- Yeah.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Excellent. Let's get to it.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Margaret Green Animal Rescue in Dorset.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44You lot look like you're having a lovely time.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47This is where unwanted and unwell animals come to get better

0:04:47 > 0:04:49and get new homes.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51Who's this, vet Andrew?

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Right, junior vets. This is Bess. This is your patient today.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57She's 15 years old.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00She's lovely. But what's up?

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- Oh, she's missing an eye. - Oh, yeah.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Poor Bess. And it looks like that ain't the old girl's only problem.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Bess used to be looked after by quite an elderly lady

0:05:09 > 0:05:11before she came here

0:05:11 > 0:05:15and this lady just wasn't able to look after her as well

0:05:15 > 0:05:18as she would have liked and she's been left with quite sore feet.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22She was still really pretty even though she had one eye.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Yeah, but she looked like she was in a lot of pain.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Horses' hooves are made of keratin,

0:05:27 > 0:05:31the same stuff as our fingernails and they grow all the time too.

0:05:31 > 0:05:36Bess's hooves have grown so long that even standing about is painful.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40She was on pain relief and we kept her in a box with a nice

0:05:40 > 0:05:43soft bed so that she wasn't putting weight on the hard ground.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46And she did seem to get better for a little,

0:05:46 > 0:05:49but she's quite sore on her feet again.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51She's not wanting to put the weight on them totally.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Because she looked like she was in a lot of pain,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57I really wanted to help her feel better.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Getting stuck in there. That's good, junior vets.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02There we go. That's it.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05That was real skill.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07- It was. - She did the click there as well.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Aw, that's great work. But we're all worried about her hooves.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17- It feels hard.- Yeah, really hard. - Yeah.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20And hard means painful.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Ouch.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24OK, Bess, let's see how bad this is.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Can we check out your walking, please?

0:06:26 > 0:06:29What we're looking out for is how well she's striding out.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Well, she's nodding her head.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34I think she puts one forward faster than the other.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Faster than the other one. So that tends to tell us that

0:06:37 > 0:06:41it might be the right foot that she's feeling the pain in more.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45You did really well spotting that. She had a bit of a limp.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48I don't think I would have spotted that.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51We know she's got some sort of pain going on in all of those feet.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55So the next step now that we know that is to take some X-rays.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57What's the worst case scenario?

0:06:57 > 0:07:00When we take the X-rays of her feet we find that there's signs

0:07:00 > 0:07:03that pain is getting worse again.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08Unfortunately we have to think about how good her quality of life is.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10So could go either way at this point.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14- We'll keep our fingers crossed for Bess.- Yeah.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18What are the chances of us answering

0:07:18 > 0:07:20all of your amazing animal questions?

0:07:20 > 0:07:24Hi, Inel. Very high. Sarah.

0:07:24 > 0:07:30Do animals find things funny or like...laugh?

0:07:30 > 0:07:36Cos I know a hyena laughs, but do other animals laugh

0:07:36 > 0:07:38or find anything funny?

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Ha-ha!

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Uh, what's up, Inel?

0:07:42 > 0:07:45I'm sorry. It's just what Sarah said. That was so funny.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Not funny, Inel.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50But stay tuned, we'll find out.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56OK, junior vets Hannah and Abi, this is an emergency.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Roger the dog needs you.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01He swallowed a tennis ball and it's stuck in his stomach.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03What's the plan, vet David?

0:08:03 > 0:08:06This is the anaesthetic I'm drawing up.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09He's only sedated at the moment, although he looks pretty much

0:08:09 > 0:08:13flat out, if we hurt him at all he's going to wake up immediately.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Every second counts now for Roger.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Concentration.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26Crack on, David. The junior vets are right behind you.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28I'm not too afraid of blood, to be fair.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30I'm not very good with operations.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32I suppose it makes you relax a bit

0:08:32 > 0:08:35when you thinking it's for the better.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37It's going to make the dog a lot better.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40But it's not something you see everyday.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44I was quite nervous going in because I don't like watching things

0:08:44 > 0:08:48like that on TV. I don't like things getting cut open.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52David's found the tennis ball. OK, junior vets, take your positions.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55This the remains of the tennis ball in here.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00What I've done is I've put some stay sutures in which will stop

0:09:00 > 0:09:04the stomach from recoiling back into the abdomen.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08If Roger's stomach leaks, it could cause a serious infection.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10The stomach was attached to a piece of string

0:09:10 > 0:09:13and the string was attached to some scissors

0:09:13 > 0:09:14and I had to hold the scissors.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16We weren't allowed to pull it

0:09:16 > 0:09:19too hard as well cos then it was like putting strain on it.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Hold on tight, junior vets, Roger is counting on you.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25I was just scared that I'm going to do something wrong.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27I don't want to look, but I do at the same time.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Uh, I can't look either.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Something tells me this isn't going to be pretty.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39The tennis ball is covered in dog food Roger has noshed.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43- We've got it. - That's the tennis ball.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Let's get you stitched up, Roger.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48It was a minging smell.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52It was one of those moments where it just hits you suddenly.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54- Yeah. - You're like, "It smells OK,"

0:09:54 > 0:09:57and then it suddenly comes and you're like, "Oh, no, it doesn't."

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Smells a bit like a really bad fart.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Hm, sorry, Roger, but Abi has a point.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Let's hope we've got the stomach to finish this surgery.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19Junior vets Isabelle and Dystance are treating

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Bess the pony's overgrown hooves.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25If there is no chance they'll get better,

0:10:25 > 0:10:28it could be really bad news for the poor old girl.

0:10:30 > 0:10:31I was really worried for Bess.

0:10:33 > 0:10:38We need to take X-ray images so we can see inside Bess's hooves.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41This is our machine for taking the X-rays here.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Feel how heavy that is.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45- It doesn't look too heavy.- Have a go.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51Just leave it there.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Come on, Bess, be better.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00You just want it moved over a little bit to the right.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Now we're ready to take the X-ray. We've got everything lined up.

0:11:04 > 0:11:05So, junior vets,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08looking like it could be quite a bleak outcome for Bess.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10How you feeling about it?

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- It's really upsetting.- Yeah, of course. It's just really sad.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18So, Andrew, what do we need to look for in the X-rays?

0:11:20 > 0:11:24Looking at the front of the bone here, so this line down here.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26And then we're looking at the front of the hoof,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29so this is the outer aspect of the hoof here.

0:11:29 > 0:11:30- Yeah.- OK.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33And what we want them to be is quite parallel.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35We don't want them to be rotation of that bone.

0:11:37 > 0:11:42I see. So these two bits need to be at the same angle like this...

0:11:42 > 0:11:44What do you think, Dystance?

0:11:44 > 0:11:47The bone's gone back a bit.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50It has. The bone has rotated a little bit, hasn't it?

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Doesn't seem to be quite parallel, does it?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57It's actually running further away from it.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Exactly.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01I was hoping for a good result

0:12:01 > 0:12:05and just hoped that she was getting better.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09But if we then have a little look at what we took ten weeks ago...

0:12:09 > 0:12:12- to compare again.- Wow.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14There's a mark difference between the angle there.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16- It's got better, then?- Exactly.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18So I think we can be fairly positive

0:12:18 > 0:12:22and say that she is making good progress based on those results.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26- It's very good. - It's really uplifting.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30It had a weight on your shoulders before. Now it's lifted.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33Yes! That's great news, Bess.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36You've got a way to go yet, girl. But things are definitely looking up.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Nice one, junior vets.

0:12:38 > 0:12:39She looks happy now.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Good luck, Bess.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Earlier Sarah asked us this...

0:12:54 > 0:13:00Do animals find things funny or laugh?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Cos I know a hyena laughs,

0:13:03 > 0:13:08but do other animals laugh or find anything funny?

0:13:08 > 0:13:10Ha-ha!

0:13:10 > 0:13:12Eh, what you laughing at, Inel?

0:13:12 > 0:13:14Well, the funny thing about this is, yes,

0:13:14 > 0:13:17some animals do find things funny.

0:13:17 > 0:13:18I mean, look at this lot.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Monkeys can have a right old giggle if tickled.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23Watch this.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Well, I never! Where did you find that, Inel?

0:13:26 > 0:13:28Research, my man, research.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36How's Roger the dog getting on?

0:13:36 > 0:13:38That pesky tennis ball is out of his belly.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Hannah and Abi, we've still got plenty to do.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Let's get this fella stitched up.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48It's very important that we have a watertight seal with these sutures.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Just seeing it, it's phenomenal.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Urgh, this is not a pretty sight.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Hey, Hannah, are you all right?

0:13:56 > 0:13:59I've gone light-headed. Is it OK if I go out the room, please?

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Whoa. You better take a break, Hannah.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Abi, you good to take over?

0:14:09 > 0:14:11Yeah, I'm just worried about Hannah.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16I think it was the heat. I have a lot of hair to keep under the hat,

0:14:16 > 0:14:19so it was a very small hat to keep a lot of hair in.

0:14:19 > 0:14:20I just got too hot.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23You're not the first vet to feel faint, Hannah.

0:14:23 > 0:14:24And you won't be the last.

0:14:24 > 0:14:29It's quite common. It's not to do with the gore, it's standing still

0:14:29 > 0:14:32and the heat sometimes in the operating theatre can affect people.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35Stay focused, Abi.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37I think you did really well.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Considering you were in there on your own as well.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41That's it.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43At last we're done.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46You'll be feeling like a top dog in no time, Roger.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57Right, so Isabelle and Dystance are on a roll at the rescue centre.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59And their next patient is...

0:14:59 > 0:15:02It's Neville the pig.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06What's his story, vet Matt?

0:15:09 > 0:15:11There is a problem with buying pigs.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13People expect them to stay the size of a small piglet.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16But invariably they do grow a little bit bigger

0:15:16 > 0:15:20and this chap has outgrown a few homes and ultimately

0:15:20 > 0:15:25he fell out with their Chihuahua and that's why he's here today.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27So you lost out to a Chihuahua, eh, Nev?

0:15:29 > 0:15:33OK, junior vets, let's get the new guy checked over.

0:15:33 > 0:15:34Because he's lived with a Chihuahua

0:15:34 > 0:15:37he actually does think he's still a dog.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40And I've heard we can get him to sit like a dog with some nuts.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42And whilst he's sitting, Dystance,

0:15:42 > 0:15:44if you position the head of the stethoscope just behind

0:15:44 > 0:15:48his left armpit, you should be able to hear his heart, OK?

0:15:52 > 0:15:57I never thought I would ever be helping a pig sit.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59While feeding it nuts.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01Neville, sit.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Neville. Sit.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06Sit.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09You'll have this if you sit.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16- You might want to do it now.- Yeah. - Sit.

0:16:16 > 0:16:21It was really cool to actually watch a pig act like a dog.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28This isn't as bonkers as it sounds. Pigs are really intelligent animals.

0:16:29 > 0:16:33And some experts reckon that they are brighter than cats and dogs.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Oi! He liked to run away.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41- Turn him around.- OK.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43Like towards you.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Neville.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Neville.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52Neville. Neville!

0:16:52 > 0:16:55Are these one of the difficulties of being a farm vet?

0:16:55 > 0:16:57Yeah, trying to keep the animals still is hard.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Sometimes you do just have to hold them quite tight and they squeal

0:17:00 > 0:17:04and it sounds like you're doing something a lot worse than you are.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06OK, you have been warned.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08Let's do this health check.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13NEVILLE SQUEALS

0:17:13 > 0:17:16Neville's scream was unbelievably loud.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18It hurt my ears.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Yeah, it hurt mine as well.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25I couldn't even hear myself think.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29NEVILLE SQUEALS

0:17:29 > 0:17:32Eh, Isabelle, I can't hear you!

0:17:32 > 0:17:35It sounds like an alarm clock's going off. More like a fire alarm.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37Don't forget, this isn't actually hurting Neville,

0:17:37 > 0:17:40and this examination is for his own good.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43OK, guys. Do you want to have a close look at his eyes as well.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Make sure they're clear.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48- There's no injuries or clouding on them.- No.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51They do. He's in good health, isn't he?

0:17:51 > 0:17:55He seems pretty strong to me.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Chill out, Neville. You still need your worming medicine.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01You don't want to get any nasty parasites, do you?

0:18:01 > 0:18:05Would one of you like to offer him that and give him his medicine?

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Well, that was easy. Anything else, Matt?

0:18:08 > 0:18:10He must be marked with an ear tag.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Oh, no.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14I'm not sure Neville's going to come quietly.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16NEVILLE SQUEALS

0:18:16 > 0:18:19Better clean up Neville's ear sharpish, Dystance.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Be brave, Neville. It will be over in a second.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28NEVILLE SQUEALS

0:18:28 > 0:18:32Good lad. Tagged, wormed and ready for rehoming.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36What are the chances of him finding a new home?

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Hopefully good. As you can see, he's a real sweetie.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41There's every chance that somebody will take him on.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43They'll just need some earplugs.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Barker, are you ready for some amazing animal talent?

0:18:56 > 0:18:58- Woof-woof!- Good boy.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06# Doggy, dog, lift your tail up

0:19:06 > 0:19:08# Doggy, dog, lift your tail up

0:19:08 > 0:19:10# Doggy lift your tail up

0:19:10 > 0:19:12# Doggy lift your tail up

0:19:12 > 0:19:13# Doggy lift your tail up

0:19:13 > 0:19:15# Show us what you've got. #

0:19:17 > 0:19:20First up, skills from Grace and Meg.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23I want to show off a special skill that me and Meg have together.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26Meggy, jump! Yay. Good girl!

0:19:26 > 0:19:28We do agility every Sunday.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Wow. Every Sunday.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Yeah, no wonder Meg is so good.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36Every Sunday. Seriously, I am really impressed.

0:19:36 > 0:19:37Nearly every Sunday.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39BOTH: Oh!

0:19:39 > 0:19:41Not even every Sunday.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43It's false advertising.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45Hm. Fibster.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47Jump. Come on.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Come on. Yay. Good girl.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Now that's impressive. That's impressive.

0:19:52 > 0:19:53On a trampoline.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55Well done, Meggy, and well done, Grace.

0:19:55 > 0:20:00I know. A trampolining dog! And they don't even practice every Sunday.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03- I know.- Jump.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06Next, Toby and Flame need help.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08This is Flame, he's my guinea pig.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11And now he's old he's getting a bit constipated.

0:20:11 > 0:20:15So we have to manually evacuate him where his poo is.

0:20:15 > 0:20:19And is there anyway of him not being constipated

0:20:19 > 0:20:21so we don't have to do this?

0:20:36 > 0:20:37Poo.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Poo, yes.

0:20:39 > 0:20:44But what he's doing for Flame, now that is a sign of true friendship.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47Would you do that for me, Inel?

0:20:47 > 0:20:49If I was, uh...constipated?

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Never.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53But I would advise you to eat more

0:20:53 > 0:20:55fresh fruit and veg and drink more water,

0:20:55 > 0:20:58and I'll probably help you clean out your cage as well.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00I don't live in a cage. Stop saying that.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02All right. Here, look.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05Eat this and drink some of this, hey?

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Inel, I'm not constipated!

0:21:08 > 0:21:11See. It's working already.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15Now remember, wash your hands after handling animal,

0:21:15 > 0:21:18and Toby's had his technique approved by a vet.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Who's the next patient for Isabelle and Dystance?

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Oh, it's Ivy the cat.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30Hello. Where you off to? Oh, she's on the run.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32I really like cats.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34I was really excited when I saw Ivy.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36Oh, nicely done, Isabelle.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Poor Ivy hasn't had a great start in life.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43What's her story, Matt?

0:21:43 > 0:21:46I've came to us about two and half months ago

0:21:46 > 0:21:49and she'd been living under a shed for several weeks

0:21:49 > 0:21:51and was not in a very good way.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53She only weighted 2.8kg,

0:21:53 > 0:21:57which for a cat of her frame is certainly on the thin side.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00So today what we want to do is give her a thorough health check.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03She shouldn't be treated like that - under a shed.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06Yeah, it was really upsetting.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09But she's lucky you're here to help, junior vets.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11The sooner Ivy gets the all-clear from you,

0:22:11 > 0:22:16- the sooner she can find a new home. Let's do this.- How does it sound?

0:22:16 > 0:22:19It sounds OK.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21SHE MIMICS HEARTBEAT

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Nice one.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Sounds like a good little beat to dance to.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Yeah.

0:22:27 > 0:22:28It's very steady as well.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Yeah, lovely. On the whole, that's a very good heart.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34Hang on, Isabelle. What have you found?

0:22:34 > 0:22:38I feel something... Kind of scabs.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40And what do you think might have caused those?

0:22:40 > 0:22:45- Fleas.- Very good. Yes. So they're very good at picking up fleas.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47Certainly with her wanting to go home today,

0:22:47 > 0:22:49that's something that we wouldn't want.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51I'm well impressed with that spot, Isabelle.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Just need to check that Ivy is now free from those unwanted pests.

0:23:01 > 0:23:05Just a few hours ago, Roger the dog was in a right old pickle.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Thanks to the junior vets, he is now minus one tennis ball.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Bet you can't wait to see your boy, Lesley.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14You get so close to your animals.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17They become... Well, they are part of the family.

0:23:17 > 0:23:23And it's like a child going into the hospital. It's just a big worry.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25"Are they going to be all right?"

0:23:27 > 0:23:32Nearly there, Lesley. The junior vets have one more important check.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36I'm about to put a thermometer up his bottom

0:23:36 > 0:23:39so that we can take his temperature.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43- It's a nice welcome back present. - I'm ecstatic.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48The bum temperature went back down to normal.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52- Hi.- Hello.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56The operation on Roger went really well.

0:23:56 > 0:24:00He's took really well to all the injections we've given him.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04He should be home tomorrow, but he's going to stay overnight tonight

0:24:04 > 0:24:07so they can check his stitches and make sure he's all OK.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10- But apart from that he's doing really well.- Thank you.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12He was on anaesthetic, so he didn't feel anything.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15But he has got a plaster over his stitches

0:24:15 > 0:24:16so it won't get caught or anything.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19- Have you got any questions to ask? - I haven't. I'd like to see him.

0:24:19 > 0:24:23- Yeah, we can take you through to see him now.- Thank you.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33You're loving all the attention.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38It showed that what you do does make a difference

0:24:38 > 0:24:41and does affect people in a positive way.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45It was really nice to see them back together.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47- Is he quite mischievous?- He is.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50Very mischievous, hence the operation.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53- No more tennis balls. - No more tennis balls.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57I think he's lovely.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59And he did really well.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02- Are you pleased to see him? - Oh, definitely.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06- My handsome boy. - We'll take him out for a walk later.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09OK.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11And we have his tennis ball.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13My goodness. Look at that.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16Whoa. No wonder you were feeling "ruff", Roger.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25At the rescue cattery, Ivy the cat is ready for a new home

0:25:25 > 0:25:29as long as she passes the junior vets' tests.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33Can you see anything crawling around?

0:25:33 > 0:25:35- No, I can't see anything. - I can't see anything.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38Another trick we have is if we get a bit of white paper

0:25:38 > 0:25:40and if we give her a brush...

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Nothing.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49All good so far.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51But Ivy arrived here really thin.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54The big thing that I really want to see today before we're happy

0:25:54 > 0:25:57to let Ivy go home is that perhaps she's gained even more weight

0:25:57 > 0:25:59or certainly not lost any.

0:25:59 > 0:26:00Fingers crossed.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02That new home's in sight now.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05Last time we were 3.4, so let's see what she is today.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09Oh, I can't look.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11She gained some weight, which was really good.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14- So it meant she could be rehomed. - Phew! What a relief.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18Yeah, that was really great news to hear.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20- Thank you. - You have a really beautiful cat.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22Thank you.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24Enjoy your new home, Ivy.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Brilliant junior vetting today from everyone.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34Dystance and Isabelle put in a big shift,

0:26:34 > 0:26:36helping three different patients.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40Isabelle, explain to me how you felt as you were being able to hand over

0:26:40 > 0:26:44Ivy to her new owners to enjoy her new life?

0:26:44 > 0:26:46It made me feel really happy because it reminded me

0:26:46 > 0:26:49of when my cat got given to my grandparents.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52And, Dystance, was there anything that you had to do that you

0:26:52 > 0:26:54were maybe not expecting to have to do?

0:26:54 > 0:26:56It's really hard to catch a pig.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58It is really hard to catch a pig,

0:26:58 > 0:27:00which is something you can certainly tell your friends.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02You've been pig catching.

0:27:04 > 0:27:08Hannah and Abi, thanks to you Roger will soon be back to his old self.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Let's hope he's learned his lesson.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12Well, its hard to believe it's six hours

0:27:12 > 0:27:15since we were looking at his insides, eh, junior vets?

0:27:15 > 0:27:17Yeah, he's looking much better.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19Yeah. You girls did a good job.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22- On the surgery there. - It weren't very pretty.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25Doctor's orders, mate, don't eat any more tennis balls.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29- Stick to dog food. - Yeah, stick to dog food.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32Thank you, junior vets, this lot are loving your work.
