0:00:27 > 0:00:28BARKING

0:00:28 > 0:00:32I tell you what, there's nothing better than a peaceful stroll

0:00:32 > 0:00:33on a cloudy day like this.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37There's not going to be nothing peaceful about this stroll

0:00:37 > 0:00:39because there's animals that need fixing.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Junior vets, where are you?

0:00:42 > 0:00:44- BOTH:- Junior vet standing by.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47When it comes to animal caring, I'm one of the best.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50I have a healthy amount of respect for animals...

0:00:50 > 0:00:54after I was bitten by quite an unusual one.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Hey. What's happening, boys? Yeah!

0:00:57 > 0:01:00How's it going? Abdullah, I heard you got bitten by an animal, man.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02- Yes, a koala.- A koala bear? I tell you what,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04it's always them cute animals you've got to watch out for, man.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Rahim, you confident about today?

0:01:06 > 0:01:09I'm fully confident and ready to tackle anything.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11See, that's the attitude I'm talking about.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Right, junior vets, let's get going. Come on, then!

0:01:16 > 0:01:17For a little village practice,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Windlesham Vets tackles big pet problems.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Sprout here belongs to bunny-rescuer Helen.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25She took him in after he was found on the roadside.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Junior vets, hop to it.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32- Hello, and how's your pet doing? - What seems to be the problem?

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Well, not terribly good. This little bunny came into my rescue as a stray

0:01:35 > 0:01:38and that was when I found that his teeth are really nasty.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39Someone's not been brushing their teeth.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42- That's not a problem.- So, shall we have a look?- BOTH:- Yes.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46We came here obviously to help him so, very happy.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47I mean, erm,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Sprout was in safe hands.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53'I'm loving the confidence. Take it away, vet Jill.'

0:01:53 > 0:01:55OK, so let's have a look at his teeth.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57All right, so, he's got really sharp incisors,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59his cutting teeth at the front of his mouth

0:01:59 > 0:02:02and I think they're the ones that are causing the problems.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04So, if the teeth keep growing they'll curl back into his mouth?

0:02:04 > 0:02:06They're just going to keep growing,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08he won't be able to pick food up properly

0:02:08 > 0:02:10and they could dig into his mouth.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12'Oh, that doesn't sound too good.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15'Sprout's going to need surgery to take these teeth out.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17'He'll have to be unconscious for the operation.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20'But is he healthy enough for the anaesthetic?'

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- He's got clean eyes.- Beautiful.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Yep, the ears are clean. He's a healthy little bunny.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28'Ah, Rahim knows his way around a bunny!'

0:02:28 > 0:02:30So, let's have a listen to his heart

0:02:30 > 0:02:33because that's going to be really important for his anaesthetic later.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35So, stethoscope.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Whoa, that's fast.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40That's partly because he's a bit scared.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Yes, we'll operate this little guy.

0:02:43 > 0:02:44Don't worry, he'll be fine.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47- HELEN:- I'm sure he'll be in good hands with you.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49All right, Sprout, see you later.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52'Nicely handled, Abdullah, but how are your bunny handling skills?'

0:02:58 > 0:03:00- JILL:- Perfect. - HELEN:- There we are.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02'Now you got him!'

0:03:02 > 0:03:05He was a bit jiggly but I got the hang of it.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Was you scared that it might bite?

0:03:07 > 0:03:09A bit, a bit.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11'Abdullah's conquered his fears now, though.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14'Brilliant start, junior vets.'

0:03:14 > 0:03:15BARKING

0:03:15 > 0:03:17OWL HOOTS

0:03:23 > 0:03:26I'm at this huge aquarium where I've heard there are some

0:03:26 > 0:03:29under-the-weather underwater creatures.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30I think I'm going to need some help.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33Junior vets, where are you?

0:03:33 > 0:03:35- BOTH:- Junior vets standing by.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38I'm top pet carer but I did care for a guinea pig a little too well.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42I'm the small pet specialist, I love cute little animals.

0:03:42 > 0:03:43Oh, there you are.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47So, Jessica, how can you over care for your guinea pig?

0:03:47 > 0:03:50I overfed him a bit so he had to go on a diet.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52So it was GUINEA pigging out?

0:03:52 > 0:03:54BA-DUM-TISH!

0:03:54 > 0:03:57OK, let's get cracking and help some animals, shall we?

0:03:59 > 0:04:03The Blue Reef aquarium in Tyneside is home to loads of awesome

0:04:03 > 0:04:05sea creatures from around the world.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Tropical fish.

0:04:07 > 0:04:08Sea lions.

0:04:08 > 0:04:09Terrapins.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Monkeys.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13Hang on, monkeys?!

0:04:13 > 0:04:15We didn't expect to see monkeys, did we?

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Just a bit random. Monkeys and fish.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Maybe keeper Susie can explain?

0:04:21 > 0:04:24It's just part of our education programme to try and promote the

0:04:24 > 0:04:26conservation of the Amazon rainforest.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28And monkeys do play a really important role

0:04:28 > 0:04:30helping that ecosystem.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34Dropping fruit into the waterways helps the Amazon River

0:04:34 > 0:04:36and the species of fish that are found there.

0:04:36 > 0:04:37So, we're going to prep their food,

0:04:37 > 0:04:40make sure they're getting the right vitamins and calcium supplements

0:04:40 > 0:04:43- and things like that. - I actually thought the monkeys

0:04:43 > 0:04:45were going to put scuba gear on and start swimming around,

0:04:45 > 0:04:48- but that's going to happen. - No.- A little disappointed.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51'Well, this lot are really cute even without scuba gear.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54'Cotton-top tamarins are the punks of the monkey world

0:04:54 > 0:04:57'and in the wild they're critically endangered.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59'But some of these were kept as pets by owners

0:04:59 > 0:05:01'who couldn't look after them properly,

0:05:01 > 0:05:02'which is why they're here.'

0:05:02 > 0:05:06They're so cute, they're like little tiny fluff balls.

0:05:06 > 0:05:07They're just so cute.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11Yeah, but most of them in that sea life centre were rescues

0:05:11 > 0:05:14because people had had them as pets and were sick of them.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15That's not right.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18'These guys need vital nutrition but, Jessica,

0:05:18 > 0:05:22'remember your guinea pig. We don't want chunky monkeys.'

0:05:22 > 0:05:26This is like MasterChef for monkeys right now.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27Really impressive.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31'Today, Jessica is preparing a delicious dish

0:05:31 > 0:05:35'of banana and monkey pellet, cleverly disguising a blend of

0:05:35 > 0:05:38'vital calcium and vitamin supplements.'

0:05:38 > 0:05:42So, what do you think about when you're making these...

0:05:42 > 0:05:46monkey dishes that are so delicious, Jessica?

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Erm... The monkeys being happy.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52The monkeys being happy, and that's what monkey food should be about,

0:05:52 > 0:05:54monkeys being happy after all.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57We're really pleased that we're helping the monkeys.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59- It was fun, too.- Yeah.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01'Anna's got portion control sorted.'

0:06:01 > 0:06:0560g. Why's it got to be such a specific amount?

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Er... One, because you don't really want them to get obese,

0:06:08 > 0:06:13so you don't put too much in and you don't really want any wasted food.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15I think we make great monkey chefs.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17- We'll need a monkey chef's hat. - Yeah.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Right, these monkeys are in for a treat.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21That looks pretty tasty. I could eat it myself.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24'OK, who's hungry?'

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Oh, it stinks!

0:06:26 > 0:06:29'The junior vets aren't totally sure how their nutritious meal

0:06:29 > 0:06:32'will go down with the punky monkeys.'

0:06:32 > 0:06:34The vitamin powder smelt horrible.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36'But they seem to be yumming it up.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42'This little chap is called Felice.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44'He was rescued and brought to the aquarium

0:06:44 > 0:06:45'after being kept illegally.'

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Felice was actually someone's pet.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51If you look really closely, he hasn't actually got any teeth.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53They've all actually decayed away

0:06:53 > 0:06:57and that's because his diet was actually only marshmallows.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59'Trust me, I love a marshmallow

0:06:59 > 0:07:03'but I wouldn't want to get nothing else to eat.'

0:07:03 > 0:07:05They can't just eat marshmallows,

0:07:05 > 0:07:08they have to have like fruit and banana and pellets

0:07:08 > 0:07:10and all them sort of things.

0:07:10 > 0:07:11'And you know what?

0:07:11 > 0:07:15'Every endangered animal deserves a little treat for dessert.'

0:07:15 > 0:07:19Insects are a really important part of their diet, for the monkeys.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21It's also their favourite as well, locusts.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23So, I've got some locusts in here.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25So, one way you get them out is just literally open the tub up,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28you've given it a couple of knocks so they're not at the top

0:07:28 > 0:07:31and then you grab them by the two back legs and then they can't move

0:07:31 > 0:07:33and then the monkeys come along and take them out your hands

0:07:33 > 0:07:35and nibble off their heads first,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38which is pretty mean but they love them. They're a bit like a lollipop!

0:07:38 > 0:07:42- They were not like a lollipop like she described.- Yeah.- Urgh!

0:07:44 > 0:07:49'Whoa, look at that, though! Felice does love his locusts.'

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Especially when they were eating their heads first.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53'And I'll tell you what, junior vets,

0:07:53 > 0:07:55'today you've helped an endangered species.'

0:07:55 > 0:07:59Goals in life, you don't really think you're going to help a monkey.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02'Even if you've not helped those locusts.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04'Go on, mate. Leg it.'

0:08:04 > 0:08:05Definitely made the tamarins happier.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Yeah, and it was a really nice feeling.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11- Knowing that you succeeded at something.- Yeah.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15'That's a load of satisfied, nutrified monkeys.

0:08:15 > 0:08:16'Vetted.'

0:08:17 > 0:08:19BARKING

0:08:19 > 0:08:21ELEPHANT TRUMPETS, LION ROARS

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Back in Surrey, Rahim, Abdullah and vet Jill

0:08:23 > 0:08:26are preparing Sprout the bunny for the operation

0:08:26 > 0:08:28to take out his troublesome teeth.

0:08:28 > 0:08:33OK, great, so let's get him weighed so that we can work out his drugs.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35So, depending on his weight

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- is how much the dosage you're going to give him?- Yeah, exactly.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41What would happen if you give it too much drugs or too little?

0:08:41 > 0:08:43If you don't give him enough, he's not going to be asleep

0:08:43 > 0:08:46and he's going to feel it and that's not going to be very nice for him.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48If you give him too much, that could be really dangerous.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51We could make him go too deep under the anaesthetic

0:08:51 > 0:08:53and that's going to have an effect on his heart,

0:08:53 > 0:08:55- so we don't want to do that. - OK.- What does that say?

0:08:55 > 0:08:581.7kg. Look at that.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01Perfect.

0:09:01 > 0:09:02I liked the way you handled the rabbit

0:09:02 > 0:09:04- when you were about to weigh him. - Oh, thanks, man.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08Rahim, I thought you said you didn't have any rabbits, man?

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Never touched one, either.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11OK, just got that gentle touch?

0:09:11 > 0:09:16- Yeah.- Look at that.- A natural. - Watch out, he might have your job.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18'So, there's no need to worry, Sprout,

0:09:18 > 0:09:20'you're in safe hands today, fella.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Let's go.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27'Rabbits need to eat and poop a lot.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30'Rahim's medicine will help Sprout do both after the op

0:09:30 > 0:09:32'so he doesn't get sick.'

0:09:32 > 0:09:33He is a lively one.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35'Oh, he's lively, all right!

0:09:35 > 0:09:37'But this blanket will keep him calm for the injection

0:09:37 > 0:09:38'to make him unconscious.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40- Didn't even feel it.- Yeah. - He's brave.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43'And hey, check out this delicate work from Abdullah.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46'The drops will stop Sprout's eyes getting sore in surgery.'

0:09:46 > 0:09:48- That's it.- OK, let's get these teeth out.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51- All all right your end?- We're confident and we're calm.- Yeah.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53'Sprout's getting sleepy.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55'The sooner it's done, the safer he'll be.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57'No time to lose, junior vets.'

0:09:57 > 0:09:59BARKING

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Hey, you know what sprouts make you do, don't you?

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Oh, yeah, every Christmas! Phooft!

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Well, that reminds me of our latest animal truth seeker.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10Sian's got an absolute humdinger for us to try and get to the BOTTOM of.

0:10:10 > 0:10:15I was scrolling through the internet and I saw a really interesting fact.

0:10:15 > 0:10:16It's quite funny as well.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19Turtles can breathe through their bottoms.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Can you tell me if this is true?

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Oh, no way, surely it can't be true?

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Well, in fact, Sian, it IS true.

0:10:28 > 0:10:29- No?!- Yep, Inel.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32Some species like the Fitzroy River Turtle

0:10:32 > 0:10:34and the Australian white-throated snapping turtle

0:10:34 > 0:10:37can stay underwater for days by taking in oxygen

0:10:37 > 0:10:39through their bottoms!

0:10:40 > 0:10:42They're known as bum-breathing turtles.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Bum breathers? I dread to think what their breath smells like!

0:10:45 > 0:10:46Thanks for that one, Sian.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Oh, yeah, I learned something today

0:10:48 > 0:10:50and I'm going to tell everyone I know.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Now, how's our rabbit getting on?

0:10:52 > 0:10:56Well, Sprout's unconscious and ready for his tooth operation at the vets.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Rahim and Abdullah have been impressive so far

0:10:59 > 0:11:01and Jill has a really important job for Rahim.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03So, we need to keep an eye on him right the way through

0:11:03 > 0:11:06and make sure his heart's beating nice and strong.

0:11:06 > 0:11:07I can hear fast pounding,

0:11:07 > 0:11:09he's faster than ours but it's slow for a rabbit.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11That's something new I learned.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13It's like someone knocking on a door.

0:11:13 > 0:11:14I like the responsibility

0:11:14 > 0:11:17because somebody placed a big responsibility in my hands

0:11:17 > 0:11:20and I knew I had to do it and I couldn't let them down.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22It's actually quite exciting.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25It's good for the animals because you're helping them,

0:11:25 > 0:11:26doing a good deed.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Only one thing. Blood. I'm not very keen of it.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32'You might see a bit here, though, Abdullah.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35'Sprout's gnashers are massive and if they don't come out,

0:11:35 > 0:11:38'they'll stop him from munching his food proper.'

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Do you, like, risk anything during this?

0:11:41 > 0:11:43Well, the worst thing that can happen sometimes is that

0:11:43 > 0:11:47I don't get the whole tooth out. Sometimes it snaps.

0:11:47 > 0:11:48You've just got to be really patient.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50These teeth are actually pretty healthy,

0:11:50 > 0:11:53even though they're growing in the wrong direction.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Shall we get a swab so that you can keep it clean for me?

0:11:56 > 0:12:00'Anaesthetic can be dangerous for rabbits, so the team must work fast.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02'That's easier said than done.'

0:12:02 > 0:12:04These are really difficult ones.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10This is really awkward, though.

0:12:10 > 0:12:11'The clock's ticking.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15'Rahim, make sure you keep a close eye on Sprout's heart.'

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Yeah, he's OK. He's slower than before but he's good.

0:12:21 > 0:12:22'Get in!

0:12:22 > 0:12:25'Or actually, get out! That's the first tooth.'

0:12:25 > 0:12:27How's he looking, Rahim?

0:12:27 > 0:12:30- Yeah, he's breathing well. - Right, let's crack on.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Good. Oh, that one's long!

0:12:40 > 0:12:43'Phew! Top work, team. Sprout's long, funny-growing teeth

0:12:43 > 0:12:45'won't cause him any more problems.'

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Don't worry, Sprout, you'll be all right.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50It was very gruesome but it was a success.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52That was a job well done.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56'It's good news for Sprout's anxious owner, Helen.'

0:12:56 > 0:12:58He has been excellent.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02- Wonderful.- He has had his operation, he's just recovering.- OK.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05So he should eat and poop.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07- If not, bring him back.- OK.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10'But how's Sprout going to munch his carrots without his front teeth?'

0:13:10 > 0:13:14Another piece of advice would be chop his food up.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17'Aha, chopped food. Pellets, hay, Sprout's going to be sorted.'

0:13:17 > 0:13:20- Well, I'll let you know if I have any problems.- Sure.- Wonderful.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22- Thank you very much.- Thank you.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25We helped the life of an animal and it was...

0:13:25 > 0:13:27it made my day.

0:13:27 > 0:13:28'Nicely done, junior vets.

0:13:28 > 0:13:33'We've got one very satisfied owner and one less toothy happy bunny.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35'Ha-ha! Vetted!'

0:13:36 > 0:13:38BARKING

0:13:38 > 0:13:40COW MOOS, PIG OINKS

0:13:40 > 0:13:44'In Tyneside, Anna and Jessica are junior vetting at the aquarium.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47'Ah, just look at these two sea lions.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49'Lucy and Finn are a happy couple

0:13:49 > 0:13:52'but recently, Lucy's been puzzling the keepers.'

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- Hi, you OK, Lou?- Hi, thank you guys so much for coming.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58So, today, we're going to be doing just a basic health check,

0:13:58 > 0:14:00plus Lucy's been putting on a lot of weight.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03So do you guys think you can help us with that problem?

0:14:03 > 0:14:04- Yes.- Yeah.- Are you sure, Anna?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I mean, big animal, do you reckon you can handle it?

0:14:07 > 0:14:10- I think so! - Yeah, we'll give it a go.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13'I was definitely nervous when I saw the sea lions.

0:14:13 > 0:14:14I mean, the scale of them,

0:14:14 > 0:14:16I thought they were going to be a lot smaller!

0:14:16 > 0:14:18'Nice one, Anna.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20'She might be a bit wary of larger animals

0:14:20 > 0:14:22'but she's straight into the sea lions' home.'

0:14:22 > 0:14:25- You did well.- Ah, thank you!

0:14:25 > 0:14:28'Junior vets, meet your patient.'

0:14:31 > 0:14:33So, what I want you to do

0:14:33 > 0:14:35is take a good nice look inside her mouth, here.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Come on, really close to me.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Can you smell her breath from there, girls?

0:14:39 > 0:14:41Oh, nice!

0:14:41 > 0:14:43Her breath was a bit fishy.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46- Slightly off-putting. - Yeah, slightly.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49'Well, Finn doesn't mind her fishy breath.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51'Lucy clearly sets his heart racing.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54'But, you know, by dropping their heart rates to save oxygen,

0:14:54 > 0:14:59'these sea lions can stay under water for up to 20 minutes.'

0:15:00 > 0:15:03OK, so we're checking out her teeth right now.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07'Lucy's been trained to follow commands,

0:15:07 > 0:15:11'which means that keepers and vets can examine her if they're worried.'

0:15:11 > 0:15:14And, of course, everything we do here is voluntary

0:15:14 > 0:15:16so if Lucy doesn't want to, she doesn't have to. Is that right?

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Good girl! Can you come down?

0:15:21 > 0:15:24There we go. So, girls, we're going to look all over her body

0:15:24 > 0:15:26and make sure there's no cuts or scrapes or anything

0:15:26 > 0:15:28that we need to be concerned about.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30So go ahead and give her a nice rub on that belly.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33'It was really weird because I thought it was going to be slightly'

0:15:33 > 0:15:36crocodiley, like, snake-like, with scales.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38But it was kind of like stroking a big wet Labrador.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40Yeah, and she was really well behaved.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44Like, she was really patient. She was lying there for ages.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46So now we need to weigh her. Like I said earlier,

0:15:46 > 0:15:49she's put on quite a bit of weight so we really need to figure out

0:15:49 > 0:15:52what's causing this weight gain. So, how much does she weigh?

0:15:52 > 0:15:54- BOTH:- 112.2.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57'Whoa! Lucy's normal weight is around 80 kilos.'

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Quite a lot, isn't it?

0:15:59 > 0:16:02That is one heavy, heavy sea lion.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05I was very nervous because there might have been something wrong

0:16:05 > 0:16:08with her, like, organs. I wanted to find out that she was safe.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11I thought she was quite greedy or something,

0:16:11 > 0:16:14like she was a bit overweight.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15Too many fish!

0:16:15 > 0:16:16'Mmm.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20'There's definitely something fishy going on here, but what is it?'

0:16:22 > 0:16:24BARKING We'll be back with Lucy later.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27But now we're on dry land with our doggy mobile.

0:16:27 > 0:16:32He hates fish but loves his Barker bites of video deliciousness.

0:16:32 > 0:16:33Play that music!

0:16:35 > 0:16:37# Doggy, doggy, lift your tail up

0:16:37 > 0:16:40# Doggy, doggy, lift your tail up

0:16:40 > 0:16:43# Doggy, doggy, lift your tail up

0:16:43 > 0:16:48# Doggy, lift your tail up and show us what you've got. #

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Well, my lizard Sergio which is riding the dog...

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on, hold on, hold on.

0:16:55 > 0:16:59Did I just see a lizard hitching a ride on top of a dog?

0:16:59 > 0:17:01Wait, wait. Rewind it, rewind it.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10That is the most awesome thing I've ever seen.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Hang on, hang on, he's got a question as well.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16Well, my lizard Sergio, which is riding the dog,

0:17:16 > 0:17:21has an unusual habit of head bobbing all the time at things that he sees.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Oh, well, there's a reason for that.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26A lizard bobbing his head is a happy lizard,

0:17:26 > 0:17:29and usually means it's trying to attract a mate.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31Although if it's riding a dog at the time,

0:17:31 > 0:17:34it might be the lizard's way of saying,

0:17:34 > 0:17:36"Check me out, I'm riding a dog!"

0:17:38 > 0:17:39BARKING

0:17:39 > 0:17:41ELEPHANT TRUMPETS, LION ROARS

0:17:41 > 0:17:44'At the vets, Rahim and Abdullah are waiting for Jill

0:17:44 > 0:17:46'to bring in the next patient.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49'Ah, nice and quiet, junior vets.'

0:17:49 > 0:17:50He's a bit scared.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52This is our little stray cat. Oh, dear.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56He was cute but I, like, felt sad for him, like,

0:17:56 > 0:17:59he was a stray and no-one took, like, responsibility for him.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01'As if being homeless wasn't bad enough,

0:18:01 > 0:18:04'this fella came to the surgery after having a nasty accident.'

0:18:04 > 0:18:09He fell out of a tree on to a moving car and he bruised all his face.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12He's got a bit of a scab on his chin still,

0:18:12 > 0:18:14but that's healing quite nicely, actually.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16'Good job he's got nine lives, though.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18'But to help him get a new home,

0:18:18 > 0:18:21'he needs an operation to stop him making babies.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25'You know the drill now, junior vets. Is he OK for the op?'

0:18:25 > 0:18:27So, who's going to do the heart check?

0:18:27 > 0:18:30- Rahim, you can do it this time. - There you are.

0:18:30 > 0:18:35Oh, and, second surgery, I was, we were both very confident.

0:18:35 > 0:18:41It's a very fast short, like, pulsing sound.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43OK, so we've checked he's all healthy, so let's give him

0:18:43 > 0:18:46his anaesthetic and then we can crack on with the operation.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48'The junior vets are on it.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50'They quickly scrub in while the medication takes effect.'

0:18:50 > 0:18:53We've been through a lot of blood with the rabbit,

0:18:53 > 0:18:55so now we know what to do with the cat.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58What could be more worse than blood?

0:18:58 > 0:18:59'Um, this job might be.

0:18:59 > 0:19:03'But the operation area needs to be germ-free, so it has to be done.'

0:19:03 > 0:19:06I tell you what, Rahim, you're a better man than I am!

0:19:06 > 0:19:10- Thank you.- Why is it so important that we're doing this?

0:19:10 > 0:19:14It's kind of important that we don't let him have lots of babies.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18There's a bit of a problem with stray cats in this country

0:19:18 > 0:19:22- and unfortunately, this is the best way.- Are you just going to cut it?

0:19:22 > 0:19:23- Yep!- Oh!

0:19:23 > 0:19:25- Rahim, you set?- Yeah.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30I was just glad that I wasn't on the working end.

0:19:30 > 0:19:31You're a lucky guy, dude.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32Oh, no.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34How many are there in total?

0:19:34 > 0:19:36- Two.- Two. Does it not grow back?

0:19:36 > 0:19:39No, this is it. They're gone for good.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42- So he's never going to be a dad? - Never.- Oh!

0:19:42 > 0:19:46'But, like Jill said, there are already too many unwanted cats

0:19:46 > 0:19:49'and the op will help this one find a loving new home.'

0:19:49 > 0:19:51He's done! That's it.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53- He'll be all right.- Good job.

0:19:53 > 0:19:54'Phew, I'm glad that's over!

0:19:54 > 0:19:57'Now, let's make sure this little man never gets lost again.'

0:19:57 > 0:19:59OK, we're going to put the microchip in.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03It's an identification thing so if he goes missing or gets injured,

0:20:03 > 0:20:04and he gets taken into the vet's,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07they'll be able to scan him and it will come up with his unique code.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09And they'll be able to find his owner.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12Basically just like when you're at the supermarket,

0:20:12 > 0:20:15- you just scan it.- It makes... Absolutely, yeah.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17Do you want to check it's working?

0:20:17 > 0:20:20- Perfect. - 'Job done.'

0:20:20 > 0:20:23I was really glad because we gave him a better chance of a life.

0:20:23 > 0:20:24- What about you?- I mean,

0:20:24 > 0:20:28we came in on a high note and we ended with a bang.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31All right, guys. You did a great job there.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33I think all that's left is to give him a name.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36- Tiger's a good one. - He's got stripes like a tiger.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Yeah, and I see a tiger right there.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40A small one, but a tiger.

0:20:42 > 0:20:43'All ready for a new home.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46'That's one little tiger vetted!'

0:20:47 > 0:20:49BARKING

0:20:49 > 0:20:51HORSE NEIGHS

0:20:51 > 0:20:54'There's a mystery going on down at the aquarium for Anna, Jessica,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56'and sea lion trainer Caitlin.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59'Why has Lucy been piling on all that weight?'

0:20:59 > 0:21:02So, what reason do you think it might be that Lucy's so heavy?

0:21:02 > 0:21:04She could be a mum soon?

0:21:04 > 0:21:07Actually, Anna, that's a really good idea.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09'Yeah, good thinking, Anna.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11'To find out if Lucy's having a baby,

0:21:11 > 0:21:13'we need vet Sophie with her fancy bit of kit.'

0:21:13 > 0:21:15This is an ultrasound scanner

0:21:15 > 0:21:18and that will give us a picture of what's going on inside the body.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21Normally when I scan cats and dogs they're sedated,

0:21:21 > 0:21:23so they lie down nice and quiet for me.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26With the sea lion, she's not sedated,

0:21:26 > 0:21:29and she gets a bit nervous when too many people are around,

0:21:29 > 0:21:31or if there's a lot of noise she might just run off

0:21:31 > 0:21:32and jump back in the water.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35So we'll need to be nice and quiet when we're doing the ultrasound,

0:21:35 > 0:21:37so not to give her a fright.

0:21:37 > 0:21:38'This is exciting.

0:21:38 > 0:21:42'Jessica prepares the special probe...

0:21:42 > 0:21:44'and Lucy's ready for her big moment.'

0:21:44 > 0:21:45CAITLIN: Good girl.

0:21:45 > 0:21:50What we're going to ask her to do is lay down, roll over...

0:21:50 > 0:21:53and then we're going to go ahead and ultrasound her belly.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56She was really well trained, like, she was like a dog.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59- It shows how intelligent she is. - Yeah.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02'But she doesn't always do what she's told.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04'Where are you off to, Lucy?'

0:22:04 > 0:22:07It was quite funny, she just, like, got bored and gave up on us.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09Like, fed up, can't be bothered any more!

0:22:09 > 0:22:12You saw she wasn't holding very well for that ultrasound, which is OK.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15So we'll just give her a couple of breaks and then we'll go back in

0:22:15 > 0:22:19- and try her again.- What will Finn be like when they have the baby?

0:22:19 > 0:22:23Sea lions typically don't have that fatherly instinct,

0:22:23 > 0:22:25so he's not going to be the one that's paying attention to him.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Of course Lucy will be the mother which they nurse off of,

0:22:28 > 0:22:32and everything, so she'll be paying the most attention to that baby.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34'OK, Lucy, let's try this again.'

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Perfect, here you go, Sophie, thank you.

0:22:42 > 0:22:47'Bingo, Lucy's been scanned but what will it show?'

0:22:47 > 0:22:49It'd better be a baby, after this!

0:22:49 > 0:22:51'I really wanted Lucy to have a baby.'

0:22:51 > 0:22:55- I mean, they're just so cute.- Yeah.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59OK, so here we have the foetal structure here.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01And this is some fluid around the foetus.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04- That's a baby?- That's a baby. - That's so cool.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06So well done, Anna, you were right.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08I was very proud that I guessed right.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10But I'm glad someone was there to tell us

0:23:10 > 0:23:13- because that did not look like a baby!- Yeah!

0:23:13 > 0:23:16- It just looked like a grey blob. - It looked like a bean.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19'Aw, so Lucy's having a bean.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21'I mean, baby!

0:23:21 > 0:23:24'Did you hear that, Finn? You're going to be a dad!'

0:23:27 > 0:23:31It made standing in the cold and the rain all worthwhile.

0:23:31 > 0:23:36'That's one sea lion, actually, I suppose it's two sea lions, vetted.'

0:23:38 > 0:23:39BARKING

0:23:39 > 0:23:41COW MOOS, PIG OINKS

0:23:41 > 0:23:44The junior vets were all in the deep end today...

0:23:44 > 0:23:47But they've shown what top animal and owner care is all about.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Hello, and how's your pet doing?

0:23:50 > 0:23:51They can't just eat marshmallows!

0:23:51 > 0:23:54- So you're just going to cut it? - Yeah.- Oh.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56She could be a mum soon?

0:23:56 > 0:24:00- Oh, what a day, eh, boys?- Yeah. - Phew, I tell you what,

0:24:00 > 0:24:02I was a bit shaky back there but you guys,

0:24:02 > 0:24:05- you overcame some fears, didn't you? - Yes, my fear of blood.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Ooh. Yeah, well, you held it together well, man,

0:24:07 > 0:24:09I didn't even notice. What about you, Rahim?

0:24:09 > 0:24:12I'd never picked up a rabbit but I managed to pick it up

0:24:12 > 0:24:15- without it escaping!- Yeah. That bunny was calm in your arms.

0:24:15 > 0:24:16- Are you all right? - Let's have a drink.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18A nice cup of tea for me.
