0:00:02 > 0:00:06Pets, wildlife and farm animals across the UK are in trouble.

0:00:06 > 0:00:10But don't worry, because coming to the rescue are today's team of...

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Today, a big cat...

0:00:20 > 0:00:23Two VERY big cats...

0:00:23 > 0:00:28And... Hello, welcome to the animal gym, how can I help you?

0:00:28 > 0:00:30DOG BARKS

0:00:30 > 0:00:31Oh, I'm ready.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35This is going to be a day of heavy-duty keep fit vetting.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Oh, yeah, it's going to be a tough day!

0:00:37 > 0:00:38I'm going to need junior vets

0:00:38 > 0:00:40that are ready to push these pets to the peak

0:00:40 > 0:00:43of their physical condition.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Well, junior vets? Where are you?

0:00:46 > 0:00:48BOTH: Junior vet, standing by.

0:00:48 > 0:00:53If we meet any Gaelic-speaking animals, then I'll be really useful.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56I'm scared of... Aah!

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Now, Eilidh, what was that about? Explain.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00SHE SPEAKS GAELIC

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- You what?- I'm fluent in Scottish Gaelic.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Oh, right. I generally just eat it.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06Junior vets, let's go.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Well, this place is all about good eating and exercise.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14We're getting physical at the brand-new

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Inglis Healthy Pet Centre in Fife.

0:01:17 > 0:01:18Toby Wilson?

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Ah, here's the junior vets' first patient.

0:01:22 > 0:01:23Toby the tubby terrier.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27What can you notice about Toby straightaway?

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Does he look like how you'd expect a normal Westie to look like?

0:01:30 > 0:01:32- No.- No, he's a bit overweight.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36He was a very cute and funny little dog.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Well, big dog!

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Before Mrs Wilson spoilt him with a few too many treats,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46our Toby had a really horrible time with previous owners.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51He was kept in a cage for 4½ years, and wasn't let out at all,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53so he had no muscles.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57No sense of play.

0:01:57 > 0:01:58He was very depressed...

0:01:59 > 0:02:03And when he was rescued, he was in a very bad way.

0:02:03 > 0:02:08I felt really sorry for him when, like, the way that he was treated.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Yeah, why would somebody want to do that to a pet?

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Oh, no. It's the moment Toby must dread.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18It's not the walk of shame, Toby, it's not the walk of shame.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20The weigh-in.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22How heavy is Toby?

0:02:22 > 0:02:2413.80.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26When we weighed Toby, he was, like, really heavy.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29He was four kilos overweight.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Whoa, four kilos! Over!

0:02:31 > 0:02:35That's like a bag of dog biscuits.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Hey, don't mention dog biscuits.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Seriously, though, an overweight dog can develop life-threatening

0:02:40 > 0:02:42health problems. They can.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45I really wanted to help Toby - he needed to lose weight,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and if he's not going to lose weight,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49then he's going to get very ill,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52- so...- He probably needed less treats, more exercise.

0:02:54 > 0:02:59More exercise? Well, allow me to introduce the hydro tank.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01It's OK!

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Basically, it's a doggie running machine thing...

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Press the green button in the middle.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08..underwater! Ha, good luck, Toby!

0:03:14 > 0:03:16We ain't talking fluffy kittens here.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20Everything here has sharp teeth, pointy beaks and big claws!

0:03:20 > 0:03:22I'm going to need some junior vet help.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26BOTH: Junior vet, standing by.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29I love the outdoors and I don't mind getting my hands dirty.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33I can't have pets at home, but I really want some animal experiences.

0:03:33 > 0:03:34You guys better go first, anyway.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36I'll follow.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42If it's British and it's wild, you'll find it here.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Wild Wood in Kent is crammed full to the brim with species that live

0:03:45 > 0:03:47or once lived in the UK.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51So, what big beasts have keeper Vicky

0:03:51 > 0:03:53and vet Laura got for Kathleen and Alfie?

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Hiya, guys.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Hello. Junior vets, we have here a water vole.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01What? He's not that big.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04But these little water voles are also known as water rats,

0:04:04 > 0:04:05and I don't like rats.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07I had not really ever heard of a water vole,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10- or seen one.- No, I've seen pictures of them,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13but I've never really seen them up close, so it was really good.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16I mean, the fact it's got slightly different ears doesn't do it for me.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19It's still too similar to a rat.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20They look cuter than a rat, though.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24So why do Vicky and the team think these guys are so special?

0:04:26 > 0:04:30So, water voles have reduced in numbers by 90% in Britain.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34It means they're Britain's fastest declining mammal.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38And because of this, we now have to reintroduce them into local places.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Oh, so the problem is that loads of other animals

0:04:43 > 0:04:44like to eat water voles.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47The rotters! And without places like this,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49they might not be around much longer.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51OK, I feel sorry for them now.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Our aim is to release them back into the wild,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56so what we need to do is to make sure they have the biggest chance of

0:04:56 > 0:05:01surviving and thriving is make sure that they're all fit and healthy.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03So these water voles need junior vetting

0:05:03 > 0:05:05before they can go back to the wild.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09That stethoscope must look massive to a water vole.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11What will be junior vets be listening out for?

0:05:11 > 0:05:14So, we want it to be a nice stable rhythm.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16- How quick is it going?- Quite fast.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19I was quite surprised how fast the water vole's heartbeat was.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21Yeah. Especially how it was so small,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24you wouldn't have thought it would have gone that fast.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27It is going really quite fast, but we're all in a normal rhythm,

0:05:27 > 0:05:30aren't we? We haven't got any funny beats or anything like that,

0:05:30 > 0:05:32and the chest sounds nice and clear, doesn't it?

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Good start. And there's another water vole that needs vetting.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42But first, you've got to catch him using a very fancy piece

0:05:42 > 0:05:43of hi-tech kit.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44An old crisp tube.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46There he is.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Who's going to try and get Mr Vole into the tube?

0:05:49 > 0:05:50- OK.- Go for it.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57I think you was, like, really brave when you went straight into it.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00There we go, he's in.

0:06:01 > 0:06:07I think, like, it was more scared of me and the tube than I was of it.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09Oh, definitely, yeah.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Right, what's next, Lara?

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Have any of you seen anything like this before?

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Do you have pets at home?

0:06:15 > 0:06:16Yeah, I've got a cat, and it's...

0:06:16 > 0:06:20You put it on the back of their neck so it stops fleas.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Yeah, so we want to part the fur and then get it right on the skin,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27so that it can be absorbed into the body and around the bloodstream.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Just do it nice and quickly.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31And then we can pop him back.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33Good work, Alfie.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36There'll be no fleas on this fella - or any other nasty bugs.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40So this is fantastic, this does your fleas, most of your worms,

0:06:40 > 0:06:42and your mites. There we go, beautiful.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46What does he weigh, junior vets?

0:06:46 > 0:06:48230.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Which is a really good weight for the water vole,

0:06:51 > 0:06:54which means he's all fit and healthy for release.

0:06:54 > 0:06:55Well done.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58We were sort of getting it prepared to go back to the wild.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02- Yeah.- And so it was definitely making a big difference to its life.

0:07:02 > 0:07:03Definitely, yeah.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07One fit and healthy water vole, vetted.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17- Ready...- Go.- Steady, and go.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19In Fife, Eilidh and Emily are

0:07:19 > 0:07:23putting Toby the overweight Westie through his paces.

0:07:23 > 0:07:24This way, Toby.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Check out doggy hydrotherapy.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28This underwater treadmill is making

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Toby work twice as hard as he would do walking normally.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35Toby was really cute when he was in the tank,

0:07:35 > 0:07:37because he was just going like that.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43Toby's four kilos overweight.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Hydro nurse Kayleigh knows if that isn't sorted,

0:07:46 > 0:07:47he could run into serious trouble.

0:07:47 > 0:07:52So when they're overweight, they can get a lot of problems,

0:07:52 > 0:07:54health problems, so it can affect their heart,

0:07:54 > 0:07:57it can affect their joints when they get older.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58Oh, we don't want that!

0:07:58 > 0:08:02The junior vets and nurse Louise need to make sure Toby's properly

0:08:02 > 0:08:03walking the walk.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05We don't want to see him doing short little steps.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08We want to see him stretching his legs right back,

0:08:08 > 0:08:10to make sure that he's walking nice and straight.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13He's doing good. His legs are moving right back,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16and he's putting them up and down right.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- He's placing them nicely, isn't he? - Yeah.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Toby's owner, Mrs Wilson, can relax.

0:08:20 > 0:08:21He's loving this now.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27When he first got in, he was all, like, tired and miserable.

0:08:27 > 0:08:33Mm-hm. And then when he got into the, like, the zone, he was, like,

0:08:33 > 0:08:35"Speed it up, somebody, I want to run!"

0:08:36 > 0:08:40Toby's workout is done, and the boss is back.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44Right, junior vets, how's Toby got on?

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Good.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50He was taking the right strides to make sure that he was actually

0:08:50 > 0:08:54losing the fat that he's put on, and he's done really well.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57OK. Right, Eilidh, you'd better open the gate

0:08:57 > 0:08:58so we can let him out, then.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- The water!- Oh, no, we have to let the water out first!

0:09:01 > 0:09:03That's right! Well reminded! Well done, junior vets!

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Nice one, Eilidh.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10Without our junior vets, everyone could have got very wet.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Strawberry lemonade.

0:09:12 > 0:09:13- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16And Toby is now a strawberry-lemonade-smelling...

0:09:16 > 0:09:18- Doing great.- ..blow-dried...

0:09:20 > 0:09:21..worked-out Westie.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23Ha! No pain, no gain, Toby.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26One cute dog...vetted.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Now, you lot love giving us a mental workout

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- with your animal truth-seeking. - Yep.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36And here's a King Kong-er of a question.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38Take it away, Naima.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40I would like to know if it's true

0:09:40 > 0:09:43that gorillas can catch a cold and other

0:09:43 > 0:09:44viruses from humans.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Get this, Naima. It's true!

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Gorillas and other primates, like monkeys and chimps,

0:09:50 > 0:09:55can catch human diseases, and we can catch stuff from them, too.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59But don't worry. Colds can't pass between people and regular pets -

0:09:59 > 0:10:02although you still shouldn't sneeze on your dog!

0:10:02 > 0:10:04- It's not nice.- Achoo!

0:10:04 > 0:10:06Or on your friends.

0:10:12 > 0:10:13At the wild animal Park in Kent,

0:10:13 > 0:10:18junior vets Kathleen and Alfie are about to meet a couple of cute cats.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19Doesn't sound too wild to me.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21GROWLING

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Whoa! Spoke too soon.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Sisters Cara and Shria are Eurasian lynx,

0:10:26 > 0:10:28the third largest predator in Europe.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30A little bit bigger than your cat, I imagine?

0:10:30 > 0:10:33Yeah. Quite a bit bigger.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37Lynx haven't been wild in this country for over 1,000 years,

0:10:37 > 0:10:41but Cara and Shria could become part of a breeding programme that might

0:10:41 > 0:10:43help see these big cats roaming our woodlands once more.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47Definitely our most stunning patient.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Definitely our most dangerous patient, as well.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Don't worry, junior vets, lynx can be trained,

0:10:53 > 0:10:55so it's easier for vets to treat them when they're sick.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57And you're going to be helping Lloyd

0:10:57 > 0:10:59with a new routine for Cara and Shria.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02This is what we use to bring the lynx to what we want them to do.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Once the lynx touch the target stick with their nose,

0:11:06 > 0:11:08we then click on the clicker here.

0:11:08 > 0:11:09- CLICK - Like that.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11If the lynx can follow these commands,

0:11:11 > 0:11:15it will mean the vets can examine them or give them medicine.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Once we click, we move the target stick away from the fence,

0:11:18 > 0:11:20and replace it with the treat.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24But I'm really not sure about bringing these hungry girls closer.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Now, I actually prefer my fingers on the end of my hands,

0:11:27 > 0:11:30rather than in there with the lynx.

0:11:30 > 0:11:31- Me too.- Yeah.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Our fingers look safe.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35Cara and Shria seemed to be full up!

0:11:35 > 0:11:37Which doesn't help the training.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Shria seems confident, I thought.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44The two of them weren't, like, interested in the meat or anything.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47But they're a wild animal so you don't really know

0:11:47 > 0:11:49what they're going to do, you can't control them.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Right. We need a change of strategy.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55If the lynx won't come to us, we're going to have to go to the lynx.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59And check out Kathleen boldly going into the big cat's den.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Yet again, you went straight in, didn't you?

0:12:03 > 0:12:07Once her nose touches the ball, you push your thumb down on the clicker.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09- Mm-hm.- And replace it with the meat.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11- CLICK - Like that.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15- You ready to give it a go?- Mm-hm.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17Now, the other hand.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19- Use the target.- Look at that!

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Kathleen didn't even flinch.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24It was just like treating a bigger version than my pet cat.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Bigger? You mean huge!

0:12:27 > 0:12:29- Now, click it. - CLICK

0:12:29 > 0:12:30And then replace it with the meat.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Expertly done, Kathleen, but this big kitty doesn't want to know.

0:12:36 > 0:12:37Alfie, you're up.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Bit nervous, but I'm going to be all right.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Don't think she seems to be bothered about it.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48I didn't really have any better luck, either.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51Well, for the record, mate, I still think you were very brave.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Well, unfortunately that didn't go as planned, with the training,

0:12:54 > 0:12:56but the key thing to remember is

0:12:56 > 0:12:58this is only their third attempt at the training.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02You need to keep saying over and over again that it's not always

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- going to work. - That's the spirit, junior vets!

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Just the way it goes sometimes, when you work on the wild side.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16OK. What have we got here?

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Looks like another portly patient heading to see Eilidh and Emily

0:13:19 > 0:13:20at Adam's pet gym.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Now, can you tell us a bit about Cassie?

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Cassie is a golden lab, she's a bit overweight.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30Oh, Cassie, that is one wobbly walk.

0:13:30 > 0:13:31No wonder owner Jan's a bit worried.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Can you see the way she's walking now?

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Do you think she's walking with that back leg -

0:13:35 > 0:13:38is she walking nice and straight or walking a bit...?

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- She was walking a bit...- Her back legs were a little bit, like...

0:13:41 > 0:13:43- Wonky.- ..bent. Well, they were bent...

0:13:43 > 0:13:44It was like this.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47BOTH: Doot, doot, doot, doot.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49THEY LAUGH

0:13:51 > 0:13:53That's it, that's it.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59So, Labradors are particularly prone to having hip problems, OK?

0:13:59 > 0:14:03So it's really important that we can get weight off her.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05Best way to find out what's happening with a pet, junior vets?

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Ask the right questions.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10What changes have you made from the diet?

0:14:10 > 0:14:15She doesn't get as much food in the morning and night-time any more,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18and treats are really cut right down.

0:14:18 > 0:14:19I would say, instead of treats,

0:14:19 > 0:14:23maybe pat her on the head and tell her how good she was and that.

0:14:23 > 0:14:27Instead of treats, just because that would take off some of the fat.

0:14:27 > 0:14:28Nice tip, Emily!

0:14:28 > 0:14:31She's keeping you clean, there, Eilidh, hey?

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Cassie was such a character.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36A new receptionist!

0:14:36 > 0:14:38LAUGHTER

0:14:38 > 0:14:41"What can I do for you today?!"

0:14:41 > 0:14:43- Whee!- Whee!

0:14:43 > 0:14:46"Hello, I'm here, I'm here, look at me, look at me,

0:14:46 > 0:14:48"I'm coming for my checkup!"

0:14:48 > 0:14:52- "And I want a treat!"- "Yeah, give me treats, give me treats!"

0:14:53 > 0:14:56No, Cassie, you can't work reception!

0:14:56 > 0:14:59You know where you're going, girl.

0:14:59 > 0:15:00Good girl. Sit. Sit.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04- Cassie.- Cassie.- You can't dodge those scales here at Furry Fit Club.

0:15:04 > 0:15:05- Cassie.- Cassie.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08- Sit.- And sit.- Sit.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11- Sit.- Sit.- Sit, girl.- Come on, Nurse Louise, let's have those numbers.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Well, the last time that Cassie came in, she was over 40kg.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19She should weigh around 30kg.

0:15:19 > 0:15:20Oooh. Not good.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22- So she is, like, ten off. That's...- Ten off.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25So we'll see today if she's actually been sticking to her diet.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Oh. 37.85.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31So, she's been sticking to it all right.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34But Cassie still has weight to lose, so wet suits on, junior vets.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37You're going in the hydro tank...

0:15:37 > 0:15:39..for the doggy paddle.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41You ready for some water?

0:15:41 > 0:15:42OK. Yep.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44It's really warm!

0:15:45 > 0:15:48We were having loads of fun, but at the same time

0:15:48 > 0:15:49helping Cassie lose weight.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51- So...- BOTH: Win-win!

0:15:53 > 0:15:56It's going to help her with her hips when she gets a bit older.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58It prevents... If she loses weight,

0:15:58 > 0:16:01it it'll help prevent any heart problems.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03And it can also help prevent diabetes.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07Cassie can even do proper swimming in this tank, and, junior vets,

0:16:07 > 0:16:09this is why you're in there with her.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13This is her floating.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15She needs a lot of encouragement.

0:16:15 > 0:16:16And we did the floating dog.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Yay!

0:16:19 > 0:16:21The last time she done this, when she was swimming,

0:16:21 > 0:16:23she went to sleep.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25She was just so, so relaxed.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27Can't have a snooze again, Cassie!

0:16:27 > 0:16:28Go on, Cassie!

0:16:28 > 0:16:29- This is the gym!- Good girl!

0:16:29 > 0:16:33- Go get them, Cassie. - That's more like it!

0:16:33 > 0:16:36We ended up getting her swimming instead of just doing the float.

0:16:36 > 0:16:40Good work, Cassie. Keep it up and those kilos will fall right off.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43Oh, no, I think I know what's coming.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48That's one healthier, drier Labrador.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Vetted.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53Barker needs his exercise, too.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57A quick spin, then he treats us to another one of your animal-y videos.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Ready? One, two, a-one, two, three, four!

0:17:04 > 0:17:06- # Doggy, lift your tail up! - Doggy, lift your tail up!

0:17:06 > 0:17:08# Doggie, Doggie, Doggie, Doggie Doggie, lift your tail up

0:17:08 > 0:17:10# Doggy, lift your tail up! Doggy, lift your tail up!

0:17:10 > 0:17:12# Doggy, lift your tail up and show us what you've got. #

0:17:14 > 0:17:16This is Simon.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19Simon has a beautiful spaniel called Millie.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Now, Millie really misses Mum when she's at work,

0:17:21 > 0:17:23and loves to say hello when she comes home.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28"Good day at work?"

0:17:28 > 0:17:30"Yes, thanks."

0:17:30 > 0:17:33- "You work too hard, you need to spend more time at home."- "Oh."

0:17:35 > 0:17:38"Hey, this is my time! Wait your turn."

0:17:39 > 0:17:41"I miss you, you know?"

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Joking aside, that is one affectionate dog

0:17:45 > 0:17:48- you've got there, Simon. - Yup, lovely.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55There are no animal cuddles for Kathleen and Alfie

0:17:55 > 0:17:57down in the Wildwood.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01They're about to help a creature so shy you hardly ever see them.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04Oh, there's one. And there's Lara, the vet, who's not shy.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07- Hi, Lara.- Hi, junior vets.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11What we have behind us today are pine martens.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15It was like another patient that I had never heard of or seen.

0:18:15 > 0:18:20Yeah, and it was really good to work with an animal that's kind of rare.

0:18:20 > 0:18:21This is Whisper.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Today, her son needs to move to a home of his own.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26Now he's fully grown, if they stayed together,

0:18:26 > 0:18:28they might end up fighting,

0:18:28 > 0:18:32and keeping pine martens healthy and safe is really important.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36These pine martens are also in decline, so we're quite concerned,

0:18:36 > 0:18:39and that's why breeding is really important.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44Cute as they look, pine martens have razor-sharp teeth,

0:18:44 > 0:18:47and they're top hunters - they even eat squirrels.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Bit kind of scared at the moment, with the size of these gloves.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54I think they're going to be well vicious.

0:18:54 > 0:18:55I'm up for the challenge.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00Well, the first challenge is actually finding Whisper and Junior.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03- Can't see them anywhere. - I can't, either.

0:19:03 > 0:19:04Here, piney-piney!

0:19:06 > 0:19:07What about that box?

0:19:08 > 0:19:11I think you're right, that they might be in there.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16I think they're in the other box.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19I know for sure that pine martens are very good hiders.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21I wouldn't like to play hide-and-seek with them.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25Hide-and-seek?! I reckon that's the pine martens' favourite game.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27Down there, there's one of them down there.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29Well spotted, Alfie.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Looks like both mum and son are in there.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35Now all you have to do is make sure you re-home the right one.

0:19:35 > 0:19:39Kathleen, could you please hold down the net behind me?

0:19:39 > 0:19:40Close up, they were cute,

0:19:40 > 0:19:43but then they could be vicious when they wanted to.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45And that's why we had to use the gloves.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47See, now, the only thing with animals and that,

0:19:47 > 0:19:49they don't realise that you're trying to help them,

0:19:49 > 0:19:52so they try and get out of a position

0:19:52 > 0:19:54that you're trying to help them in.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57Wow, Alfie, that's proper vet speak, that is.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00Just time to inject Junior with a microchip containing his own special

0:20:00 > 0:20:03code so he can always be identified.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06So we've got the chip, it matches up with what we want -

0:20:06 > 0:20:07ending at 832.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10They can't mess about getting him into his new home.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13The stress could be dangerous for the little fella.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17I wouldn't have thought the net was going to hold, because if he, like,

0:20:17 > 0:20:19used his claws or his teeth, I thought it might have ripped!

0:20:19 > 0:20:20Ready for the big release?

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Whoa! How fast are pine martens?!

0:20:24 > 0:20:26Junior's off to explore.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28Happened pretty quickly.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31"See you later, Mum!

0:20:31 > 0:20:32"This place is great!"

0:20:32 > 0:20:34You guys did absolutely fantastically.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36"Yeah, thanks, guys."

0:20:36 > 0:20:40- Was that exciting?- My heart was pounding really fast.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44So that's one pine marten safe and sound in his new home.

0:20:44 > 0:20:45Vetted.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52Right, want to see a really big cat?

0:20:52 > 0:20:56Eilidh and Emily have one final appointment at the fitness centre.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59- Fudge!- Fudgey!- Fudge!

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Fudge!

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Girls, if he wants to chill with me, he wants to chill with me!

0:21:04 > 0:21:07Mm. Fudge isn't really one for timekeeping.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09- But we have to get him through!- Yeah!

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Hey, hey, you can't force him.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15- I mean, me and him chilled out... - Go through!- ..watching some fish.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17He looked so heavy.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Might be a two-junior-vet job.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21I don't know how they managed to lift him.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23No, I don't know.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27Fudge is a Maine Coon cat, and they're biggies anyway.

0:21:27 > 0:21:28Good, careful, that's it. OK.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31But they're not normally this big.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33Impressive powerlifting, girls.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36He's got lots of fat in that tummy.

0:21:36 > 0:21:37So we're all checking out his heart,

0:21:37 > 0:21:41which is more like a drum and bass track.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43And it's like... Tsk-tsk, tsk-tsk.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46Tsk-tsk, tsk-tsk.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50So his heart rate was well over 100, and you're right -

0:21:50 > 0:21:51it's really hard to count.

0:21:51 > 0:21:56And that's, like, a common thing for the big cat?

0:21:56 > 0:21:57Yes.

0:21:57 > 0:21:58Like overweight dogs,

0:21:58 > 0:22:01fat cats aren't likely to live as long as healthier ones.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05The junior vets need to find out all they can from owner Sharon.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07Whenever Fudge is outside,

0:22:07 > 0:22:09does he normally, like, run around or does he,

0:22:09 > 0:22:12like, just lie there in the sun?

0:22:13 > 0:22:16He likes to sunbathe, he likes to lie in the garden.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19We try and get him to run up and down the stairs quite a lot

0:22:19 > 0:22:22with a bit of string to try and get him to exercise more,

0:22:22 > 0:22:25but he's quite a lazy cat, he likes to just lie and lounge.

0:22:25 > 0:22:29So Emily and Eilidh are now facing the ultimate pet fit club challenge.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Fudge, up the stairs!

0:22:31 > 0:22:33- Get Fudge...- Who's this?

0:22:33 > 0:22:35..to go up the stairs.

0:22:35 > 0:22:39That was funny! We had, like, the little bird, and then, like,

0:22:39 > 0:22:41he wouldn't go up.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43Right, Fudge, come on!

0:22:43 > 0:22:45- Fudge!- You can't just lie here.

0:22:45 > 0:22:46- Yeah!- Go up the steps!

0:22:46 > 0:22:48But it didn't work.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51I think that we might have to carry him up,

0:22:51 > 0:22:53I doubt we're going to get him...

0:22:53 > 0:22:55I reckon that's cheating if you carry him up the stairs.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58So Fudge is not going to budge.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02What do we think, is the plan going forward?

0:23:02 > 0:23:06You should try and get him to do more exercise,

0:23:06 > 0:23:07and keep going with the diet.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11But we've seen how getting Fudge to exercise is pretty hard work,

0:23:11 > 0:23:13so have you got any suggestions on how she can...

0:23:13 > 0:23:15Got it, Adam! Personal trainer!

0:23:15 > 0:23:18Personal trainer! Are you offering?!

0:23:20 > 0:23:23Glad you think I'm fit enough to be able to do the job.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25You're afraid of cats.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29- Exactly.- That's... That's like a minor...inconvenience!

0:23:30 > 0:23:33Anyway, we think we've cracked the steps challenge.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35Finally! Put the basket at the top...

0:23:35 > 0:23:37- Yeah!- ..at the top of the steps.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39The wonderful basket!

0:23:39 > 0:23:41And he ran!

0:23:43 > 0:23:44Oh, he's not lazy at all!

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Yay!

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Ha! All Fudge needed was an escape route from pet gym.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52Bye, Fudge!

0:23:52 > 0:23:53One cuddly cat...

0:23:53 > 0:23:54vetted.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02Junior vets, you've all pulled your weight today,

0:24:02 > 0:24:03and done a brilliant job.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05- Quite fast.- Come on, Cassie!

0:24:05 > 0:24:07My heart was pounding!

0:24:09 > 0:24:13Oh, I tell you what, junior vets, I mean, if it worked for Toby,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15it's definitely going to work for us, isn't it?!

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Ha-ha-ha! Actually, how do we stop this thing?

0:24:19 > 0:24:21Where's the controls?

0:24:21 > 0:24:22Best of luck, Inel!

0:24:22 > 0:24:25This lot were certainly in luck today.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27Job done! All vetted!

0:24:29 > 0:24:30Fancy getting vetting yourself?

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Well, head to the CBBC website right now and start earning hearts

0:24:34 > 0:24:37and points by helping the animals that need you.
