0:03:37 > 0:03:41just because I want to help as many animals as I possibly can.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Morgan is also a massive animal fan,

0:03:45 > 0:03:47but can the West Yorkshire lad prove to Mum

0:03:47 > 0:03:50he's responsible enough to have a pet of his own?

0:03:50 > 0:03:51I'm not allowed a pet at home,

0:03:51 > 0:03:53but hopefully, this will change everything.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33..Sam and Saira,

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Will and Amblessed...

0:04:34 > 0:04:36..let's get down to business.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41My Junior Vets will be working in pairs to help pets,

0:04:41 > 0:04:46farm animals and all sorts of unusual and exotic creatures.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49It might be my new recruits' first day at Vet School,

0:04:49 > 0:04:51but all of them are facing tricky assignments

0:04:51 > 0:04:55and I'll be getting regular progress reports.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59Only the very best Junior Vets will win today's Vital Vet Work award,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02that will help me decide who will be named Head Vet.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Tower Farm Riding Stables is home to 65 horses and ponies

0:05:13 > 0:05:17who all work and live happily together.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20New recruit Brie has just arrived here,

0:05:20 > 0:05:23but at the moment, she's all on her own.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26Brie has been kept apart from the other ponies,

0:05:26 > 0:05:30in case she has a highly infectious disease called strangles.

0:05:32 > 0:05:33New Junior Vets Sam and Saira

0:05:33 > 0:05:36are teaming up with horse expert and equine vet Matt Hanks,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38to carry out Brie's test.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41First up, we get into protective clothing

0:05:41 > 0:05:44so we don't spread diseases around the riding school.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47I feel like a marshmallow,

0:05:47 > 0:05:49like a snowman, like an astronaut.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51When I found out my first animal was a pony,

0:05:51 > 0:05:56I was like, quite happy, but then I was a little bit wary as well,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58cos I was thinking, "Oh, gosh,

0:05:58 > 0:06:00"I wonder how this is going to turn out."

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Ponies are very sensitive animals.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04Brie keeps a close eye on all of us

0:06:04 > 0:06:08and a slightly nervous Saira keeps a close eye on Brie.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12This is Brie, OK? She's a little four year old Highland pony.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15No problems so far. Saira and Brie are getting on fine.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17The thing about horses, they're very big,

0:06:17 > 0:06:21so the places that you don't want to stand are right behind her

0:06:21 > 0:06:22and right in front of her,

0:06:22 > 0:06:24because they can strike out with their front feet.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28OK. I've not really, like, encountered horses before,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31so I was really, really excited.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Right, Junior Vets, big challenge that you've got,

0:06:34 > 0:06:37but I want you to do me proud, OK? See you later.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39- Bye, Paul.- Bye, Paul.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43The team need to take a test sample from deep inside Brie's head.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47What we're going to do is pass this camera up Brie's nose,

0:06:47 > 0:06:51we're going to put some fluid in and when we suck the fluid back,

0:06:51 > 0:06:53we must collect it and put it in these little containers.

0:06:53 > 0:06:54And is that, like, a sample?

0:06:54 > 0:06:58That's a sample. Now, who wants to put the camera in

0:06:58 > 0:07:00and who wants to take the samples?

0:07:00 > 0:07:02- I don't mind, do you want to do it? - Camera.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- Sam's got the camera. Saira, you've got the samples.- Yeah.- OK?

0:07:05 > 0:07:11And later, my Junior Vets must get that all important test sample.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14I think we're quite nervous at the moment,

0:07:14 > 0:07:16- but I hope it all works out for us.- Yeah.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19Saira, you've got a job to do here,

0:07:19 > 0:07:22come on, Junior Vet, you can do this.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28For their first vital vet work assignment,

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Will and Amblessed have been called to Five Sisters Zoo

0:07:31 > 0:07:33in West Lothian.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Don't look at me like that.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40And it's the resident racoons that need help today.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43This furry family has a number of feisty young males

0:07:43 > 0:07:46who are causing problems for the zoo staff.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49My Junior Vets have teamed up with exotic animal vet Kevin

0:07:49 > 0:07:51to sort them out.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54We've got some young males within the group, and as they get older

0:07:54 > 0:07:56the racoons might start fighting, or we might have breeding

0:07:56 > 0:08:00which we want to prevent, so the young boys have got to be neutered.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Neutering one of the males is a good way to keep the peace

0:08:03 > 0:08:07and prevent unwanted babies crowding out the racoon pen.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10It's a simple enough operation, the hard bit

0:08:10 > 0:08:14will be getting their hands on one of the troublesome males

0:08:14 > 0:08:17and that job has been handed to our Junior Vets.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20Zoo keeper Lyn gives them a last-minute briefing.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23You know it's going to be really quick, it's going to be really fast.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26It could be quite dangerous as well and obviously the racoons are going

0:08:26 > 0:08:29to be scared, going to be stressed. So he is going to try and bite us.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33And a bite from those 40 razor sharp teeth could be very serious.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36If I say, you know, I need you to move over there,

0:08:36 > 0:08:38I need you to move over there, you've got to do it for me.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40You've got to get there as quick as you can.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Apart from that we should be fine, as I say, just listen

0:08:42 > 0:08:46to the instructions when you're in there and we should be good to go.

0:08:46 > 0:08:47I'll keep them down.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49The team get straight to work with nets and poles

0:08:49 > 0:08:53and begin edging the racoons towards a corner of the enclosure,

0:08:53 > 0:08:58making it easier to target one of the jumpy males.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00So maybe try and get this one up here.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04It was really cool to be with, like, an animal that's not, like,

0:09:04 > 0:09:06you don't usually see around England, because they come

0:09:06 > 0:09:10from America, don't they? And it was quite scary, but it was good.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Safely capturing animals

0:09:12 > 0:09:16is a vital skill for anyone who wants to work with wild creatures.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Right, guys, if you can put a net up that side

0:09:19 > 0:09:21and bring him back this way for me.

0:09:21 > 0:09:22Impressive work.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26Will and Amblessed have helped send one straight into Lyn's net.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Right, we've got a racoon, Kevin.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31But is it a male?

0:09:31 > 0:09:34So, how do you tell if it's a female or male?

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Excellent question, Amblessed, there's only one way to find out.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42RACOON SNARLS

0:09:43 > 0:09:47Checking this out is something the racoon is not too keen on!

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Racoons might look little and cute,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52but they're actually quite aggressive.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55HE SNARLS

0:09:55 > 0:09:59Result. The team have captured a young male, called Cyril.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02- Got your adrenalin pumping now. - Yeah!- Yeah!

0:10:02 > 0:10:07And later, they face up to their first ever surgery.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10So the plan is, you'll be monitoring his anaesthetic,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Will, you're going to be joining me

0:10:12 > 0:10:14and actually doing the surgery with me.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21Back at the Vet School's small animal hospital,

0:10:21 > 0:10:25Lauren and Morgan are about to meet their very first patient.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29This is Ronnie, an eight-year-old fox terrier.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Ronnie's usually a playful little chap,

0:10:31 > 0:10:33but owner Stuart has noticed his poor pet

0:10:33 > 0:10:36develop a painful looking limp recently.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39- Hi, my name's Morgan. - Hi, I'm Lauren.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43He's hoping the Junior Vets and surgeon Sam Woods

0:10:43 > 0:10:45can help work out what's wrong with Ronnie.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48So, how can we help you today?

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Ronnie's just had a sore foot for the last few weeks.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55The team's worried Ronnie might have more than just paw problems,

0:10:55 > 0:10:57so they must carry out a thorough examination.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Put them in your ears, OK?

0:10:59 > 0:11:02I want you to look at the clock.

0:11:02 > 0:11:0615 seconds, count how many beats.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08By monitoring Ronnie's heart rate,

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Morgan might be able to pick up on any serious illnesses.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Ronnie was really cool, because he was calm

0:11:13 > 0:11:16and he didn't really mind us testing on him.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20A very fast heart rate could be an indicator of stress

0:11:20 > 0:11:23or even a potentially fatal heart disease.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Well, there's two beats at a time, but I counted 15.

0:11:27 > 0:11:28OK, so you're absolutely right,

0:11:28 > 0:11:31so what you really hear is two beats so you hear bo-bum,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33and if there's 15 of them in 15 seconds,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36then there's 60 of them in a minute.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Great news, Ronnie's heart rate sounds healthy.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43Now, Lauren examines his gums. Pink gums are a sign of good health.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47- Yeah.- Lovely. All right.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50Finally, Morgan checks his ears for signs of infections.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52What am I looking for?

0:11:52 > 0:11:55OK, what you look for, you're looking for any redness

0:11:55 > 0:11:57or any wax that you can see in there, anything like that.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- No, all fine.- You can always have a bit of a smell,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- just check that they don't smell too nasty, no?- No.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Morgan's happy with his examination,

0:12:04 > 0:12:08but it hasn't given up any further clues to Ronnie's problem.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Lauren now focuses on his lower leg.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14Touch the base of his paw, just up onto this bit of his leg there,

0:12:14 > 0:12:19so I'll just help hold on to him. Keep going, that's it. Good boy.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Good boy.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Then the upper leg.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26And then finally, up to the shoulder

0:12:26 > 0:12:28cos that's at the top of the leg.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30DOG YELPS

0:12:30 > 0:12:32- OK.- 'That doesn't sound good.'

0:12:32 > 0:12:37Something is definitely wrong with Ronnie's left leg.

0:12:37 > 0:12:38HE YELPS

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- OK, good boy. - It's sore, isn't it, darling?

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Poor Ronnie is clearly in pain

0:12:43 > 0:12:47and Lauren is determined to work out how to help him.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50So, would you say that yelp was a symptom of something,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53or would you say he was just a bit annoyed with you touching him?

0:12:53 > 0:12:55He didn't like me extending his left,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58that makes me wonder, is there something going on in his shoulder

0:12:58 > 0:13:00that's causing him a bit of discomfort?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03We now have to rule out whether it's toes that are causing the problem,

0:13:03 > 0:13:07or whether there is something actually going on in his shoulder.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11To find out, the team need a closer look inside Ronnie's leg.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14And later, they uncover vital clues

0:13:14 > 0:13:17that might bring about a remedy for Ronnie.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21- Look at that.- Yeah. - That must be painful.

0:13:29 > 0:13:30Every one of my Junior Vets

0:13:30 > 0:13:32are working with animals that need their help,

0:13:32 > 0:13:35and I'm getting regular updates on their progress.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38I'll be awarding Vital Vet Work awards

0:13:38 > 0:13:41to star performers at the end of the day.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45These daily awards either go to Junior Vets working in pairs,

0:13:45 > 0:13:49but they can also go to stand-out individuals.

0:13:49 > 0:13:50And the more they get,

0:13:50 > 0:13:54the better the chance of winning my Head Vet title.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58You can see how you get on as a virtual vet

0:13:58 > 0:14:01in the Junior Vets game on the CBBC website.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03Don't forget to look for the special game code

0:14:03 > 0:14:06at the end of today's show.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16Will and Amblessed are at a zoo in West Lothian.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18They've captured a male racoon called Cyril,

0:14:18 > 0:14:20who needs an operation that will help calm him down

0:14:20 > 0:14:24and stop unwanted babies overcrowding the enclosure.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29Vet Kevin quickly sets the Junior Vets to work.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32Amblessed has to manage the anaesthetic,

0:14:32 > 0:14:36a drug that will keep Cyril safely unconscious during his op.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38120.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41I had to take his heartbeat, his respiration rate

0:14:41 > 0:14:44and his temperature occasionally, but it was harder

0:14:44 > 0:14:46because it was really warm in there.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49This is a big responsibility for my new Junior Vet.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52Any mistakes could result in her missing a sign

0:14:52 > 0:14:54that something is wrong.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57414.

0:14:57 > 0:15:02Will is assisting Kevin with the op, which means he must scrub in.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Now you can start scrubbing that.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08It's a critical job for every surgeon.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Even the smallest amount of dirt could cause an infection

0:15:11 > 0:15:12and endanger Cyril's life.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14I've never been in an operation before,

0:15:14 > 0:15:18so it sort of gave me the real life sense of being a vet.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24This is Will and Amblessed's first ever experience of surgery.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30It's a huge challenge, so I'm going to lend them a hand.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Are you happy with his condition under anaesthetic?

0:15:34 > 0:15:35Can you tell me what's going on?

0:15:35 > 0:15:39Yeah, he's doing quite well, so he has around 120 heartbeats a minute,

0:15:39 > 0:15:41which is good.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44What happens if his heart rate goes up?

0:15:44 > 0:15:47That means he...he might be starting to wake up.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50Right, OK, that's important, isn't it?

0:15:50 > 0:15:53- You really don't want him to wake up during anaesthetic, do you?- No.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56And also, you don't want him to go too far into the anaesthetic either

0:15:56 > 0:15:59so, you're doing a really important job.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Amblessed has Cyril's vital signs under control...

0:16:02 > 0:16:04He's stable and doing well?

0:16:04 > 0:16:06Yeah.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09..and gives the go-ahead for Kevin and Will to start the neutering op.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12OK, then we're going to start.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16The team are removing Cyril's reproductive organs,

0:16:16 > 0:16:19so he can't have any more unwanted babies.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21We're going to put clamps on here and here

0:16:21 > 0:16:23and that's where you've got to concentrate...

0:16:23 > 0:16:27- To stop it from constantly bleeding. - Stop it from bleeding here out.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31It's a tense procedure. Amblessed needs to stay focussed

0:16:31 > 0:16:34on counting Cyril's heart and breathing rates.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37So we're going to place one clamp here.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40It's a bit gory, but Will needs to keep his focus.

0:16:41 > 0:16:42We need another clamp,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45same style clamp again or one of them, that'll be fine.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47It was the first time I'd actually

0:16:47 > 0:16:49been in an operating theatre and I wasn't sure

0:16:49 > 0:16:53that he was going to make it and what the outcome would be.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56So if we have one of the lengths of suture material...

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Cyril has been successfully neutered so Kevin stitches him up.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04We've finished surgery, guys.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06Amblessed has to do a few last checks

0:17:06 > 0:17:08on heart rate and temperature...

0:17:09 > 0:17:12- Can you read it?- 37.6.- That's it.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16..before Cyril is given an injection to wake him up.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20He should start recovering now within about ten minutes.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23That was a solid first time performance

0:17:23 > 0:17:25from both of my Junior Vets today.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27Didn't want to, like, get it wrong,

0:17:27 > 0:17:30so that the animal could be in danger of its life.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32You never know how someone who's never been exposed

0:17:32 > 0:17:34to that before is going to react.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36They coped with that situation very well indeed.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Monitoring the anaesthetic was really important,

0:17:38 > 0:17:41because numbers were rising or dropping,

0:17:41 > 0:17:42so I'm really proud of myself.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46And the great news, Cyril's made a full recovery

0:17:46 > 0:17:50and is enjoying life back in the racoon enclosure.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00Back at the small animal hospital,

0:18:00 > 0:18:03Lauren and Morgan are investigating Ronnie the fox terrier's

0:18:03 > 0:18:04painful looking limb.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06HE YELPS

0:18:06 > 0:18:08They're hoping a radiograph, or x-ray image,

0:18:08 > 0:18:10can shed a little more light on the problem.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Do you want to pop him up onto the table for me?

0:18:13 > 0:18:14This won't hurt Ronnie,

0:18:14 > 0:18:17but he'll need a mild sedative to settle him down

0:18:17 > 0:18:19and keep him nice and still.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Will he be fully unconscious?

0:18:21 > 0:18:24He won't, we're just giving a sedation,

0:18:24 > 0:18:27it's not a full anaesthetic, so he'll still be able to hear things,

0:18:27 > 0:18:30but he's going to be much more sedate than he would be.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33So his muscles will all go weak now.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Ronnie's clearly nervous,

0:18:35 > 0:18:39the Junior Vets do their best to calm him.

0:18:39 > 0:18:44It's all right, matey, it's all right, sweetie.

0:18:44 > 0:18:50Lauren helped Ronnie keep calm so when we was testing on him,

0:18:50 > 0:18:53and seeing what were wrong, that he wouldn't move or jump.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55That's perfect.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Ronnie is positioned for his x-ray.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00We want it absolutely side-on, so if you can have a look at that,

0:19:00 > 0:19:02- see if you think it's straight.- Yeah.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Exposure to x-ray radiation can be harmful,

0:19:05 > 0:19:09especially to young people, so our Junior Vets leave the room.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13- Do you think the dog's going to be OK?- Hopefully.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17Within seconds, there's an image ready to be examined

0:19:17 > 0:19:20that might help solve the mystery of Ronnie's painful leg.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25We'll pop across the corridor and develop it.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Lovely.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33Oh. That is so cool.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35But it's not wannabe vet Lauren

0:19:35 > 0:19:38who's the first to identify a possible problem.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41It's Morgan, who thinks he's spotted something wrong

0:19:41 > 0:19:42with Ronnie's left paw.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Morgan thought he saw something on the foot.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48- Look at that.- Yeah. - That must be painful.

0:19:48 > 0:19:53It did look quite peculiar, it didn't look particularly normal.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55Morgan has got it spot-on.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57It seems Ronnie has suffered a suspected fracture

0:19:57 > 0:20:01to his sesamoid bone, a bone that's part of the paw.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05That's really the area where Ronnie had that swelling,

0:20:05 > 0:20:09that soft tissue swelling. It could be he's had that since birth.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12It could be that that's been a trauma.

0:20:12 > 0:20:13But it's looking like double trouble.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Sam suspects that Ronnie has developed arthritis in his shoulder.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23So, I'll book him back in for a CT scan at a later date.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27Today's hard work will mean Sam can fix a course of treatment

0:20:27 > 0:20:29that will help relieve Ronnie's pain.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35And before going home, Ronnie can enjoy a well-deserved rest.

0:20:37 > 0:20:38Good boy, Ronnie.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43Both my new Junior Vets impressed me on their first case.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46I really enjoyed it and doing this has made me really up my game

0:20:46 > 0:20:47cos I want this more than ever.

0:20:47 > 0:20:52Morgan, very keen on the digital imaging, and I think he'll do well.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55The experience today definitely makes me want to be a vet

0:20:55 > 0:20:57even more than it did, because it's exactly what I want to do

0:20:57 > 0:20:59throughout the rest of my life.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02Lauren, really keen to do everything, really impressed.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04And the latest news is,

0:21:04 > 0:21:09Ronnie is enjoying exercising again and is back to his old, happy self.

0:21:17 > 0:21:18Back at the Riding School,

0:21:18 > 0:21:20Sam and Saira need to test pony Brie

0:21:20 > 0:21:23for a serious disease called strangles.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26If the tests come back positive that she had it,

0:21:26 > 0:21:31then it's very serious. It can spread inside her body, it can get worse,

0:21:31 > 0:21:33it can make her feel ill, but, most importantly,

0:21:33 > 0:21:37it could spread to other horses and make them ill as well.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40They're using a special piece of kit called an endoscope.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42This is the camera that's going to go up her nose

0:21:42 > 0:21:45and I can make it move around any direction that I want.

0:21:45 > 0:21:50We're about to go in and test Brie to see if she's got any disease

0:21:50 > 0:21:54or infection in her body, and we'll end up getting a little test sample.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57- Good girl.- The endoscope is inserted up Brie's nostril.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00It might look uncomfortable, but ponies have big noses.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04There's not even a sniffle from brave Brie.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08- Sam, can you come here?- Yeah. - And you hold on to the skirt.

0:22:08 > 0:22:13This is Sam's big moment. It's a delicate, expensive piece of kit.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16He must stay in complete control at all times.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20Right, when I say go forward, you go forward, OK?

0:22:20 > 0:22:24Go in Sam, OK, stop, come back.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26They move the scope through Brie's nasal passage

0:22:26 > 0:22:28towards her middle ear. Once there,

0:22:28 > 0:22:30they need to look for signs of inflamed tissue

0:22:30 > 0:22:35or thick, liquidy pus. Both are signs of strangles.

0:22:35 > 0:22:39It was quite nervous when I was putting the endoscope up,

0:22:39 > 0:22:42because we were really near the brain.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44Right, can you come back a wee bit, Sam?

0:22:44 > 0:22:47Just really a slight little bit, OK.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49I was wondering whether she could feel it or not,

0:22:49 > 0:22:53whether she was a little bit scared and I was thinking like,

0:22:53 > 0:22:55"I wonder how she's feeling inside."

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Here we go, look at this, we are in the horse's middle ear.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01They're now in position for Saira to take the test sample.

0:23:01 > 0:23:05It's all down to you now, come on, Junior Vet, you can do this, OK?

0:23:05 > 0:23:09You force it in, fast as you can. Push it in.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Saira inserts a thin tube down inside the endoscope.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16- Stop. Can you see the tube appearing? There's your tube?- Yeah.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19That's your tube, now, I want you to squirt that liquid in.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21- Go for it, yeah.- All of it, yeah?

0:23:21 > 0:23:24The liquid will mix with any pus at the back of Brie's throat

0:23:24 > 0:23:26and make it easier to collect.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30- A little hard to push. - It's hard to push, yeah?

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Suddenly going from leading our normal lives

0:23:32 > 0:23:35to putting cameras up a horse's nose, I'm thinking

0:23:35 > 0:23:37it's a bit crazy, really.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43Saira must now use a plunger to suck back a sample of the liquid.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Pull the syringe back, pull this plunger back.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48- 'Carefully, Saira.' - Bring it all back.- Stop.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Got it.

0:23:50 > 0:23:55That's our sample. That's fantastic. Perfect.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58Job done, now the Junior Vets can comfort Brie

0:23:58 > 0:23:59and examine their handiwork.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03That's quite cool.

0:24:09 > 0:24:10That was real hands-on work

0:24:10 > 0:24:14for my new Junior Vets, Saira and Sam.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Sam handled that endoscope like a professional,

0:24:18 > 0:24:20and followed my instructions very carefully.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22I'm really impressed with Sam.

0:24:22 > 0:24:26It was a great fun experience, I had a really good time and hopefully

0:24:26 > 0:24:28when I'm older, I'll be doing it a lot more.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31Saira did really well, she put the fluid in quickly and efficiently

0:24:31 > 0:24:33which is important, we don't have much time.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36For someone of my age to be able to do that kind of a thing,

0:24:36 > 0:24:39this is absolutely amazing, and I think I'll probably remember this

0:24:39 > 0:24:41for the rest of my life.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57It's been a long, hard first day

0:24:57 > 0:25:00for every one of my new Junior Vets.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06But who will earn the first Vital Vet Work award?

0:25:06 > 0:25:09It's time for me to make my decision.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11I need to pick out today's top performers

0:25:11 > 0:25:14and it's not going to be easy.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19Will and Amblessed got stuck in with an unusual first vet job,

0:25:19 > 0:25:22dealing with Cyril, the feisty racoon.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24They didn't back out of the challenge

0:25:24 > 0:25:27and concentrated throughout their first ever surgery.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31Lauren and Morgan proved themselves as top vet detectives in the making,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34as they went searching for clues to help surgeon Sam

0:25:34 > 0:25:38mend Ronnie's mysterious leg injury.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40But Saira and Sam were outstanding.

0:25:40 > 0:25:44They kept their nerve and got that difficult test sample

0:25:44 > 0:25:46from Brie's nasal passage.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52It's been a very tough decision to make on day one of Vet School.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57It's the end of your first full working day at Vet School

0:25:57 > 0:26:01and what a tough day, but there was one team that stood out

0:26:01 > 0:26:04above the rest, and that team was...

0:26:14 > 0:26:16..Sam and Saira.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20You are today's top Junior Vets, so well done, guys.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23All my new Junior Vets have shown a real appetite for vet work

0:26:23 > 0:26:28and a determination to succeed, but it was Saira and Sam's focus,

0:26:28 > 0:26:32overall performance and team skills that won the day.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35They are the first ever Junior Vets

0:26:35 > 0:26:39to be awarded a Vital Vet Work badge and it's well deserved.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41- Amazing, it's fantastic.- Yeah.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43Cos obviously, that's the first time

0:26:43 > 0:26:46we've done anything like that, and then to know that we've done it

0:26:46 > 0:26:48really well and then we've won the challenge as well,

0:26:48 > 0:26:49that's a really good feeling.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52The reason why we've won is probably our team work

0:26:52 > 0:26:55and how we work together. Amazing. Yay!

0:26:55 > 0:26:58Think you can cut it as a top vet and make animals better?

0:26:58 > 0:27:03Head over to the CBBC website now and use today's game code...

0:27:05 > 0:27:06..to unlock a special case

0:27:06 > 0:27:08in your very own waiting room.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11Next time...

0:27:11 > 0:27:13there's no let-up for my Junior Vets

0:27:13 > 0:27:15as they race to help horses...

0:27:15 > 0:27:18learn to turn sheep...

0:27:20 > 0:27:23..and are confronted with major surgery.
